Judging from these new screenshots below, "traditional" seems like a very apt description - granted, we're intrigued by what appears to be the return of Raccoon Mario, the <em>original</em> flying power up.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/new-super-mario-bros-2-announcement/">New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Announcement)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/new-super-mario-bros-2-announcement/#4977930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/34-2goldenemies_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/new-super-mario-bros-2-announcement/#4977931"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/4.2-1goldmario_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/new-super-mario-bros-2-announcement/#4977932"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/11-1tailmario_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/new-super-mario-bros-2-announcement/#4977933"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/23-3spiderweb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/21/new-super-mario-bros-2-also-hits-north-america-this-august/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Super Mario Bros. 2 also hits North America this August</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/21/new-super-mario-bros-2-also-hits-north-america-this-august/">New Super Mario Bros. 2 also hits North America this August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. However, without a direct quote, it seemed likely that he had been talking about the Wii U and the (confirmed) 3DS Super Mario game, and the two had become conflated. The other, less likely option, is that Miyamoto had let slip the existence of an unannounced game, which is out of character for anyone at Nintendo.<br /><br />However, that's exactly what happened. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-04-16-confirmed-nintendo-will-announce-a-new-super-mario-bros-game-for-the-wii-u-at-e3">Eurogamer</a> received confirmation from Nintendo. "In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," the Nintendo representative told the site. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."<br /><br />During the last E3, Nintendo showed a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/we-played-wii-u-plays-tech-demos/">Wii U game</a> (above) based on <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> <em>Wii.</em> It's possible that demo may have evolved into this new game, or it could be something totally different. All we know at this point is that it's a "Super Mario Bros. game."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/nintendo-showing-wii-u-mario-game-at-e3/">Nintendo showing Wii U Mario game at E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. Gaming culture certainly produces its fair share of posters and wall decals, granted, but what if you're looking for something a little more elegant? What if you want your house guests to think "young professional," rather than "college bachelor?" For you, there is the Super Mario Coin Block Lamp from 8BitLit.<br /><br />Available for $74.99 at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/90066890/interactive-super-mario-coin-block">the company's Etsy shop</a>, the lamp is made from laser-cut plexiglass and is illuminated by six LEDs. Switching the lamp on and off works exactly how you'd think, with each punch to the block's underside accompanied by an appropriate sound effect. Combine this thing with The Clapper and your apartment will be <em>so smooth</em> your guests will need guardrails.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/25/touch-sensitive-mario-coin-block-lamp-lights-up-our-hearts/">Touch-sensitive Mario coin block lamp lights up our hearts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 25 Feb 2012 13:30:00 EST. We're all hopeless romantics, but you don't need to be as in love with being in love as we are to recognize how precious, touching and clever these gaming themed Valentine's Day card templates are.<br /><br />Made by Etsy user PaperRockScisorz and available at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/PaperRockScisorz">her shop</a>, these print-your-own card templates feature Pokemon, Dr. Mario, Sonic, Zelda and Portal motifs with cutesy sayings and pixel hearts at $2.75 a pop. It's an easy and inexpensive way to show your significant other that you care, assuming you're lucky enough to share your life with a person that loves games as much as you do. If you're <em>not</em> that lucky, well, maybe get them a gift card or something. Single people are advised to dress up like a member of their preferred gender and have a romantic candle-lit dinner with themselves in a mirror. One of the major hurdles facing musical gamers (or <em>gamicians</em>, if you will) is the difficulty inherent in finding official sheet music or tabulature for video-game soundtracks. Songbooks are often expensive and in Japanese -- if they even exist in the first place. Now though, the hunt for gaming sheet music has just gotten a little easier.<br /><br />Four officially licensed Nintendo-oriented songbooks are now available in The Queen's English from <a href="http://www.alfred.com/Search/SearchResults.aspx?q=nintendo&amp;type=All">Alfred Music Publishing</a>. The books, <em>Super Mario for Guitar</em>, <em>Super Mario for Piano</em>, <em>Super Mario for Easy Piano</em> and <em>The Legend of Zelda for Piano</em> each contain more than 30 songs from various games in their respective series. What's more, <em>Super Mario for Piano</em> and <em>The Legend of Zelda for Piano</em> are also available in ebook format on Apple's iBookstore.<br /><br />Each book retails for between $16.99 and $19.99, and while Mario and Zelda aren't exactly <em>obscure</em>, there's something to be said for learning the classics. Let's hope this is the beginning of a new trend in localizing gaming sheet music; we'd give up an arm for a <em>Mega Man 3</em> songbook. No, wait, we'd give up a <em>leg</em>. We need that arm to play music.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/22/official-mario-and-zelda-songbooks-now-available-in-english/">Official Mario and Zelda songbooks now available in English</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST. As if the saga of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/peter-molydeux/">Fake Peter Molyneux</a> weren't an exciting enough Twitter story, today we were introduced to Faux Shigeru Miyamoto, who creates amazing Flash games using classic Nintendo characters. Both Mario and Kirby are lampooned in Flash on the impersonator's Tumblr site, as well as the legendary creator himself of course. Presumably the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/08/nintendo-officially-denies-miyamotos-plan-to-step-down-within-n/">totally-not-retiring</a> <em>slash</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/07/report-shigeru-miyamoto-retiring-from-current-position-at-nin/">potentially retiring developer</a> isn't just pulling a fast one on us all, and we very much doubt these are prototypes for that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/miyamoto-working-on-an-unannounced-original-game/">original game he's making</a>.<br />
<br />
Regardless, we suggest one thing before heading into any of the games on said site: turn your volume way, way down. All things considered, 2011 was a pretty solid year for the 3DS. Despite an incredibly slow adoption rate at launch and the resultant corporate turmoil, buyers on the fence were eventually persuaded by a massive price drop and 3D remakes of yesteryear's classics. By the end of 2011, Nintendo had sold "more than 4 million" of its stereoscopic wunderkind to US consumers, as well as 1 million units each of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-3d-land"><em>Super Mario 3D Land</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mario-kart-7"><em>Mario Kart 7</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Nintendo had only sold 830,000-ish 3DS units as of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/current-3ds-owners-eligible-for-free-games/">last July</a>, a full 4 months into the life of the product. By the end of October, however, that number had inflated to around <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/october-npd-3ds-rising-a-good-month-for-games-with-bat-in-th/">1.08 million units</a> thanks to August's price drop, with November pushing another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/november-npd-a-new-record-with-xbox-360-joined-by-mw3-and-skyr/">795,000 units</a> into American pockets. For this to add up, the holiday shopping season would have needed to move at least 2.1 million more 3DSes, which doesn't seem like that much of a stretch considering the abundance of bundles at retailers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/3ds-past-4-million-in-us-mario-sells-another-2-million/">3DS past 4 million in US, Mario sells another 2 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 16:30:00 EST. The Japanese version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/just-dance-3"><em>Just Dance 3</em></a> shipped with the above track featuring Nintendo's mascot and now it's coming to the UK as DLC. Players will be able to download the track for 250 Wii Points tomorrow through the in-game store.<br />
<br />
There's currently no word on when the track will be available in the US version of <em>Just Dance 3</em>, but Ubisoft has at least confirmed to Joystiq that it's coming.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/mario-busts-a-move-in-just-dance-3-in-the-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario busts a move in Just Dance 3 in the UK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/mario-busts-a-move-in-just-dance-3-in-the-uk/">Mario busts a move in Just Dance 3 in the UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 17:30:00 EST. Look, we like seeing an organization desperately flailing in an ill-fated attempt at relevance as much as the next site, but this time PETA has gone too far. The organization has created <em>Mario Kills Tanooki</em>, a 2D platformer that has a skinned tanuki (or raccoon dog, if you prefer) trying to retrieve its outer layer from a flying, blood-spattered Mario.<br />
<br />
Taking a swipe at the world's favorite plumber is pretty low, but it's worse in this case because PETA is <em>blatantly lying</em>. As <em>everyone</em> knows from reading the Nintendo Comics System (specifically the "Tanooki Suits Me" story from the <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. line) the Tanooki suit was hand-crafted by a tailor <em>named</em> Tanooki rather than any animal the material was lifted from.<br />
<br />
Mario's not an animal abuser, PETA. He's a furry. And for the record, when you manage to make even <a href="http://www.nma.tv/super-mario-peta-group-targets-video-game/">NMA look sane</a>, you know something's wrong.<br />
<br />
For the record, yes, this is a grab for attention and we're making it rain eyeballs. But this is Mario we're talking about. We'd hope that when <em>we're </em>inevitably targeted by a crazy group, you'd leap to our defense too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/16/peta-targets-mario-we-challenge-the-facts/">PETA targets Mario, we challenge the facts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 11:45:00 EST. When it comes to Mario Kart, you can always count on two things. The first: an overabundance of "Nintendo Fairness," wherein race-leaders endure firestorms of powerful item attacks, while lagging competitors are showered with said items -- and brandish them with reckless abandon. This inexorably results in an embattled first-place spot, and guarantees even the least-competent players a decent shot at claiming a last-second lead.<br />
<br />
The 3D-powered Mario Kart 7 thankfully dials this down a bit from the artificial-fairness excess last seen in Mario Kart Wii, but damn, is it ever annoying. I've learned to live with this, though.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/">Mario Kart 7 (10/6/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/#4507130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/i31108_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/#4507137"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/i31109_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/#4507142"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/i31110_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/#4507147"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/i31111_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-kart-7-10-6-11/#4507152"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/i31112_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/mario-kart-7s-impressive-commitment-to-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario Kart 7's impressive commitment to community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/mario-kart-7s-impressive-commitment-to-community/">Mario Kart 7's impressive commitment to community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST. Americans love Mario and friends as much as anyone else, but it really says something about Japan's devotion to their Italian mascot when his new 3DS game manages to outsell both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-3-drakes-deception"><em>Uncharted 3</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3"><em>Battlefield 3</em></a> by a fairly massive gap.<br />
<br />
For the week ending November 6, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Super-Mario-3D-Land"><em>Super Mario 3D Land</em></a> sold 343,492 units in Japan, outselling its closest competition by over 200,000 units, earning the No. 1 slot on <a href="http://www.m-create.com/ranking/">Media Create's sales charts</a>. <em>Uncharted 3</em> came in second with 124,989 units sold, and <em>Battlefield 3</em> slotted in right beneath it at 123,379, scientifically proving that the Tanooki Suit is a powerful psychoactive monetary aphrodisiac.<br />

We get it. Everybody deserves to come home from a long day at the office and embrace a loved one, whether it be an actual human being, a pet or just a really awesome pillow. In this case, it's all pillow. Get it? <em>Get it?!</em><br />
<br />
Ahem, sorry -- Nintendo's latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/club-nintendo">Club Nintendo</a> Platinum goodie for Japan (yeah, we're upset, too) has us all aflutter with excitement. It's the very awesome <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario">Mario</a> pillow you see above, available as one of three different freebies for Platinum members. The other two freebies up for grabs are two table calendars or two different soundtracks, from a total of five, though we know eligible members would never go against the pillow. An intrinsic, universal facet of human nature is that we as people consistently want what we can't have. It's deeply rooted in our species' collective subconscious, silently driving our passions for incredible, unobtainable <em>stuff</em>. The Japanese Club Nintendo has a healthy track record for producing some of the most amazingly unavailable swag in our industry's long, storied history of unavailable swag, but we think these new limited edition 3DSes rank in at number one on our "Most Impossible Dreams" list.<br />
<br />
The 3DSes, named "Peach," "Mario" and "Super Kinoko," natch, are being produced in limited numbers (1,000 each) for Nintendo's "A Little Mario-like 3DS" campaign. Japanese Club Nintendo members who register two games between now and January 15 will be automatically entered to win one of these adorable little 3DSes. Club members will also receive a free copy of the 3D Classics port of <em>Kid Icarus</em> upon entering. So! If you're a Japanese Club Nintendo member, we hope you can feel our burning envy through your monitor.<br />
<br />
Unless you win one, in which case we'd love to have you over for <strike>poison</strike> tea some time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/22/ultra-limited-edition-3dses-are-adorable-no-you-cant-have-one/">Ultra-limited edition 3DSes are adorable, no you can't have one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Oct 2011 21:30:00 EST. <br />
At Joystiq, we're firm believers in the idea that every human being has an instrument to which they are naturally attuned, for self expression and emotional release. In most cases, a person's instrument is a literal instrument; <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw74sDWPH7U&amp;feature=player_detailpage#t=120s">Steve Vai</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FReGLY2lLuY">Regina Carter</a> come to mind as ready examples. Sometimes, however, a person's instrument can be a little more <em>abstract</em>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/Shuey187">Shuey187</a>, for instance, is a Tetris virtuoso. As a follow-up to the 90 minute magnum opus in which he <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/building-mario-in-tetris-is-tougher-than-you-may-think/">used Tetris to create a Mario sprite</a>, Shuey187 has utilized his unique gift for geometrically aligning blocks in order to craft Mario's brother and confidant. It's a truly amazing thing to watch, especially when you consider the fact that he used nothing more than a sprite pattern and raw talent to get the job done. Seeing as the video has no soundtrack, we suggest opening a second window and listening to one of the other two phenomena we mentioned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/man-uses-tetris-to-create-luigi-awe/">Man uses Tetris to create Luigi, awe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 18:30:00 EST. You know, when you stop and think about it, Mario has had a pretty hard life. He's single-handedly saved pretty much everything that can possibly be saved, from princesses to <em>whole entire galaxies</em>, but it's still never enough. There's always one more mountain for Mario to climb, one more castle in need of conquering, one more koopa to coop up.<br />
<br />
Now, in what may be his most sadistic and tragically doomed challenge to date, Mario has been tasked to climb a tower that is destined to fall, in the form of <em>Super Mario Balance Block</em>, a table-top Jenga derivative due out in Japan this November. Not to be confused with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/off-the-grid-joyswag-donkey-kong-jenga/">that other Mario-infused Jenga derivative</a>, <em>Balance Block</em> somehow augments traditional Jenga gameplay with Super Mushrooms, although we doubt Mario will be able to complete his impossible task, even with their help.<br />
<br />
Currently, it doesn't look like <em>Super Mario Balance Block</em> will be officially released stateside, however there are a few different import options in the source link, if that's your thing. You monster.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/super-mario-balance-block-is-jenga-for-goombas/">Super Mario Balance Block is Jenga for goombas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. Yoshiaki Koizumi, producer of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-bros/"><em>Super Mario</em></a> series, has his team working on a new <em>Mario </em>game for the Wii U, even though he didn't know what Nintendo's new console would even look like prior to its unveiling at E3. In an interview with <a href="http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/07/wii-u-mario-zelda/all/1">Wired</a>, Koizumi said now that he knows what the Wii U can do, he wants to "create a console game where two people are playing at the same time but can't see each others' screens." You know, much like how the internet operates, but without all those messy tubes.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Skyward-Sword/"><em>Legend of Zelda</em></a> producer Eiji Aonuma also spilled some secrets about the HD demo Nintendo used to show off its new graphics -- mainly, don't believe everything you see. "You probably remember that when we introduced the GameCube, we showed a somewhat realistic <cite style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Zelda</cite> demo," Aonuma said. "And what we actually created was the cel-shaded <cite style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Wind Waker</cite>. So when we show a graphic demo, people think, 'Oh, this is what the next <cite style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Zelda</cite> will look like,' but that's not necessarily the case." Secrets and lies, Nintendo. <em>Secrets and lies</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/with-wii-u-mario-will-use-two-screens-and-zelda-wont-look-like/">With Wii U, Mario will use two screens and Zelda won't look like this</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 14:30:00 EST. Yesterday marked the end of the "year," as far as North America's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/club-nintendo">Club Nintendo</a> Elite Status goes. Did you earn 600 "Coins" by registering first-party Wii, DS, and 3DS games and taking surveys between the end of June last year and yesterday? If so, you're entitled to this year's gift for Platinum status holders, a set of commemorative pins.<br />
<br />
The 25 <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> sprite pins come in six boxes that can be arranged to form a picture of Mario, a mushroom, or a Goomba.<br />
<br />
If you hit the 300-Coin mark in that period, you're entitled to the "Gold" gift, which, as always, is a desk calendar with a different Nintendo game theme for each month. We just switched over to the <em>Nintendogs + Cats</em> page in our 2011 calendar this morning!<em> Awwww</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/club-nintendo-platinum-members-to-receive-commemorative-pin-se/">Club Nintendo 'Platinum' members to receive commemorative pin set</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. For the fourth year in a row, a group of <em>insane people</em> will board themselves up in a small, Mushroom Kingdom-decorated room to beat every level, collect every star and stomp every Goomba the Super Mario franchise has ever produced. Why would someone purposefully, harmfully oversaturate themselves with such a wonderful, timeless franchise? Because <a href="http://www.mariomarathon.com/">they're the Mario Marathon</a>. <em>It's in their blood</em>.<br />
<br />
The crew is kicking off this suicide mission today at 11 a.m. ET, starting with a playthrough of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-galaxy-2">Super Mario Galaxy 2</a>. </em>Even though it hasn't started yet, the event has already raised $13,000 for Child's Play. We encourage you to go watch these poor souls hurt themselves with Mario, and then, if you feel so inclined, reward their efforts with a donation to a good cause.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/4th-annual-mario-marathon-triple-jumps-into-action-today/">4th Annual Mario Marathon triple-jumps into action today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 10:00:00 EST. They said you were a joke. They said you'd never be a somebody. They said your love of latex and highly volatile, unstable objects would be your downfall. Yeah, well who's laughing now? You've just made a life-size balloon sculpture of Master Chief and now he's <em>your best friend ever</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/its-a-giant-master-chief-and-mario-made-out-of-balloons/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>It's a giant Master Chief and Mario made out of ... balloons</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/its-a-giant-master-chief-and-mario-made-out-of-balloons/">It's a giant Master Chief and Mario made out of ... balloons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 02:00:00 EST. As if there weren't enough <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recurring_enemies_in_the_Mario_series#Shy_Guy">Shy Guy permutations</a> in various Mario games haunting your dreams as it is, custom action figure crafter <a href="http://www.jinsaotomesdangeroustoys.com/">Jin Saotome</a> has gone and created an even more terrifying one than normal. As seen above and more thoroughly on <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/JinsDangerousToys/ShyGuy.html">his personal site</a>, Saotome's interpretation of Shy Guy is just a tad darker than Nintendo's version.<br />
<br />
Naotome's site details the figure's composition, a careful combination of a PVC Shy Guy character mask, the body of DC Comics' Desaad and the hands of The Spirit, and a gatling gun composed of an Iron Man weapon and a Spawn weapon. The piece is currently up on <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-SHY-GUY-Marvel-Legends-DC-Universe-Super-Mario-/330559816185?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&amp;hash=item4cf6e681f9#ht_5547wt_1002">eBay</a>, fetching around $60 as of midday Friday EST, but it's also <em>really sweet</em> and one-of-a-kind, so you may wanna jump on that soon if Dark Shy Guy is for you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/youll-be-way-into-this-custom-shy-guy-figure/">You'll be way into this custom Shy Guy figure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 19:00:00 EST. In honor of the 25th anniversary of <em>Super Mario Bros.,</em> Nintendo released a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-collection-special-pack">retread</a> of <em>Super Mario All-Stars</em>. Now, working with Nintendo, Converse is releasing some Mario-themed goods to aid in <em>your</em> treading.<br />
<br />
This July, Converse will offer special edition Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes in two styles, with tiled Mario sprites against either a white or black <em>canvas</em>. Even the star on the All-Star logo gets a Mario makeover. Unfortunately, these kicks have only been announced for Japan, so it may be difficult for you to look <em>this</em> cool.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/super-mario-converse-all-stars-coming-to-japan/">Super Mario (Converse) All-Stars coming to Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 19:16:00 EST. The recently opened Tempest Freerunning Academy in Los Angeles has put together a promotional video of its gym that hits several notes obligating us to write about it. The fantastic feats of athleticism in the clip begin with various free runners flipping, climbing and jumping across a set inspired by the 8-bit world of <em>Super Mario Bros</em>.<br />
<br />
The rest of the video just fills us with jealous awe, considering the closest we'll probably ever get to pulling off some of the featured stunts is when we play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mirrors-edge">Mirror's Edge</a></em> or the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/01/brink-preview/"><em>Brink</em></a>. <em>Actually</em>, we take that back. We <em>could</em> totally do the stunts, but we'd have to call ahead to the hospital and pre-order a room first.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/tempest-freerunning-academy-features-mario-tribute/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tempest Freerunning Academy features Mario tribute</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/tempest-freerunning-academy-features-mario-tribute/">Tempest Freerunning Academy features Mario tribute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 14:30:00 EST. Attendees of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sxsw-2011/">SXSW</a> were privy to a trailer promising a more dramatic version of the tale of the brothers Mario. Now said trailer is online for all to see and we'd be remiss not to bring it to your attention. Joe Nicolosi's take on the Mushroom Kingdom is not only irresistible, it's pretty hilarious -- oh, and <strong>NSFW</strong>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/the-super-mario-bros-movie-that-should-have-been/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Super Mario Bros. movie that should have been</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/the-super-mario-bros-movie-that-should-have-been/">The Super Mario Bros. movie that should have been</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 00:10:00 EST. It took YouTube user Shuey187 <em>over 90 minutes</em> -- and, sadly, he never finished the hat.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/building-mario-in-tetris-is-tougher-than-you-may-think/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Building Mario in Tetris is tougher than you may think</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/building-mario-in-tetris-is-tougher-than-you-may-think/">Building Mario in Tetris is tougher than you may think</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 02:00:00 EST. Nintendo has apparently concluded its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/07/nintendo-exploring-option-of-reprinting-super-mario-all-stars/">exploration of the option</a> to reprint <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-collection-special-pack">Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition</a></em>, deciding that a "final shipment" (i.e., a reprint) of the anniversary collection is in order. It's unknown just how many copies will be repinted, but the Big N says that you'll be able to begin the scramble to get your own on March 13 for the original $30 price.<br />
<br />
Of course, you could simply "Buy It Now" <a href="http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p5197.m570.l1311&amp;_nkw=super+mario+all-stars:+limited+edition&amp;_sacat=See-All-Categories">on eBay</a> for 70 big ones or so, but then where's the thrill of the hunt? Soon the game shall be afoot!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/nintendo-confirms-final-shipment-of-super-mario-all-stars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo confirms 'final shipment' of Super Mario All-Stars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/nintendo-confirms-final-shipment-of-super-mario-all-stars/">Nintendo confirms 'final shipment' of Super Mario All-Stars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 17:20:00 EST. French prankster <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9mi_Gaillard">R&eacute;mi Gaillard</a> is back to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/man-plays-mario-kart-with-real-motorists-in-france/">some more real-life <em>Mario Kart</em></a>, and he's just as fearless as ever, throwing bananas and turtle shells at cars while zipping around dressed up like the world's favorite plumber. The sound effects really sell this one -- next time you get pulled over by a cop, try Mario's "wooahhohhohhoohhh" on for size. It fits perfectly. After all, as the quote at the end of the video says, "by doing anything, you can become anybody." Why not Mario?<br />
<br />
Plus, you get to see why Mario gets those bananas from crates as he goes by, and not straight from the grocery store. Check the whole video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/12/real-life-mario-kart-prankster-returns-to-the-track/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Real-life Mario Kart prankster returns to the track</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/12/real-life-mario-kart-prankster-returns-to-the-track/">Real-life Mario Kart prankster returns to the track</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 05:00:00 EST. Mario can be quite the stoic character. So, this 10 minute interview with the Italian plumber to promote <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mario-sports-mix"><em>Mario Sports Mix</em></a> is a bit ... jarring. In fact, the iconic Nintendo mascot sometimes comes across <em>as a jerk</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/mario-sports-mix-press-conference-reveals-marios-dreams-and-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario Sports Mix 'press conference' reveals Mario's dreams and aspirations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/mario-sports-mix-press-conference-reveals-marios-dreams-and-a/">Mario Sports Mix 'press conference' reveals Mario's dreams and aspirations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 23:30:00 EST. Just in case the very existence of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> wasn't enough to convince you that there would eventually be a traditional <em>Super Mario</em> game for it, Nintendo has made it official. In the company's latest <a href="http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/mario25th/vol5_page7.jsp">Iwata Asks</a> feature, <em>Mario</em> maestro Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that a new <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> game is indeed underway for 3DS -- that's in addition to the upcoming iterations of <em>Mario Kart</em> and <em>Paper Mario</em> for the new handhled. "In the interests of adopting new technology for the <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> tradition, I am now making a new <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. game for the Nintendo 3DS system," Miyamoto revealed.<br />
<br />
"I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS," he added. We're going to go out on a limb and guess the new game will involve Mario and a daring royal rescue.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/3ds-super-mario-bros-confirmed-by-miyamoto/">3DS Super Mario Bros. confirmed by Miyamoto</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 18:35:00 EST. While we find the promiscuous portrayal of Princess Peach and Zelda in this music video for "8-bit Ho" unfaithful to the <em>real-life </em>heroines, we're still compelled to give props: Patrick Donahue's rap is a catchy reflection on having your Heart Container broken.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/zelda-and-peach-are-a-bit-more-outgoing-in-this-new-music-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Zelda and Peach are a bit more outgoing in this new music video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/zelda-and-peach-are-a-bit-more-outgoing-in-this-new-music-video/">Zelda and Peach are a bit more outgoing in this new music video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Dec 2010 23:00:00 EST. The developers probed include Katsuya Eguchi, who joined the team in 1986, and <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> director Yoshiaki Koizumi, who didn't join until 1991.<br />
<br />
As always, Iwata proves an expert interrogator, drawing neat information out of his employees. For example, <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> on DS was originally conceived as a fifth game in the GBA's <em>Super Mario Advance</em> series. "After we released <em>Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3</em>," says Hiroyuki Kimura, "people were asking if a '5' in the series would be released. That's right when the Nintendo DS system came out, which was perfect timing, so I thought if we're gonna make it, it should be a new title."<br />
<br />
Additionally, Koizumi describes the experience of working with Miyamoto on <em>Super Mario 64</em>, which Miyamoto directed himself. While Koizumi expected written instructions, instead he got, well ... "it was just Miyamoto-san and me in the office, and he starts showing me how Mario is supposed to swim while saying, 'It's not really a breast stroke, and not a crawl, but something like this maybe...?' You don't know <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/encajaencamon/page3/">flickr user Encaja en Camon</a>, but rest assured that the account in question has some pretty awesome and simple LEGO adaptations of famous games and their characters. Another 10-Coin <a href="https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/18002.do">screensaver</a> is available, this time featuring<em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dragon-quest-ix">Dragon Quest IX</a></em> artwork against a backdrop of the world map. If you're less prone to screen burn-in and more prone to spill your drink, you may be more interested in the other new item: the set of <a href="https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-category-details/a/17501.do">three Mario towels</a> originally released in Japan last July.<br />
<br />
Of course, given that each towel goes for 350 Coins, you'd probably be better off reaching for the paper towels, instead of ordering one of these and then waiting several weeks for it to arrive. We don't want to imagine the horror of actually cleaning with one of these. They're too ... collectible!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/club-nintendo-offers-dragon-quest-ix-screensaver-mario-towels/">Club Nintendo offers Dragon Quest IX screensaver, Mario towels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 00:00:00 EST. <p style="" class="MsoNormal">By now, you'd think Super Mario would know better. Like Captain Kirk and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Buchannon">Mitch Buchanan</a> before him, any woman he romances is destined for danger. A kinder man would quit the dating scene altogether, maybe take up a hobby, and take comfort in knowing that he has spared some beautiful stranger the peril of knowing him. Not this guy. It's like he's got a hero complex or something.</p>
<p style="" class="MsoNormal">And so, in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mario-vs-donkey-kong-mini-land-mayhem"><em>Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!</em></a>, there's Mario taking Pauline out of hiding for a romantic day at the Mini-Land amusement park, and there's Donkey Kong, right on schedule, snatching her away. Even though "mayhem" is not exactly the right word for the low-key puzzle game that ensues (and the exclamation point is just gratuitous), Mario's latest handheld adventure is nevertheless an appealing, though minor, entry in his canon.<br />

Last October, when the wounds of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wii-music"><em>Wii Music</em>'s</a> critical and commercial failure were still relatively fresh, Shigeru Miyamoto <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/15/miyamoto-there-may-still-be-some-possibility-for-wii-music-fr/">mentioned</a> that "there may still be some possibility" of continuing the franchise. In a recent interview with <a href="http://techland.com/2010/11/08/shigeru-miyamoto-legendary-nintendo-designer-speaks-on-the-mythology-of-mario/4/">Techland</a>, Miyamoto went a bit further, explaining, "There's a lot of potential still in <em>Wii Music</em>, I think. Because we're going to change it up, a new interface is coming, and all of that." Them's <em>sequeling</em> words, partner.<br />
<br />
Miyamoto also addressed the possibility of Mario making an appearance in a <em>Wii Music</em> follow-up, stating "If we get more people to understand what's going on in the game concept, then he might appear in the game. I don't know." He added that a Mario cameo is somewhat unlikely, as "he can't play guitar" or saxophone using his stubby, gloved fingers. That's a good point, Mr. Miyamoto -- we guess he can't play too many instruments. But he can<em> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA26YVH_dWY">rap</a></em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA26YVH_dWY"><em> with the best of them</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/11/miyamoto-talks-about-wii-musics-future-hints-at-sequel/">Miyamoto talks about Wii Music's future, hints at sequel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 23:02:00 EST. If you happened to be visiting the new neighborhood of Arcosur, located in Zaragoza, Spain, this past weekend, you would have played witness to a truly ... unique sight. This past Saturday, one of the first streets in the still-under-construction suburb received a moniker: <a href="http://www.viciojuegos.com/noticia/Asistimos-a-la-inauguracion-de-la-estatua-de-Mario-en-Zaragoza/25273">Avenida de Super Mario Bros.</a>, which, as the Spanish-speakers and context clue-users among you probably figured out, translates to Super Mario Bros. Avenue.<br />
<br />
Present at the unveiling was the titular plumber himself, as well as the neighborhood's new residents, who sported fake black mustaches in solidarity. The name was chosen by said residents in an online poll -- and it isn't the only gaming-themed name which won out. Future boulevards in the community will be named after <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, <em>Space Invaders</em> and <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>. This is all very cool -- but we're still holding out hope for an <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleyway">Alleyway</a></em> Alleyway. Is it too late for a write-in ballot?<br />

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of <em>Super Mario Bros.</em>, Nintendo invited fans to celebrate with an incredible cake, adorned with recreations of levels from the game. Not only did Mario show up, but so did his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, and NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/07/happy-birthday-mario-we-share-cake-with-mario-and-miyamoto-at/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Happy birthday, Mario!
