Hoping to somehow diminish our aversion to the sight of Miis playing musical instruments, Vicarious Visions is working the user-created, er ... "avatars" into the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour in a so-called unique way. In an interview with IGN, the developer explained how the recently revealed Mii mode, known as "Mii Freestyle," will work.

Using the guitar or drumkit peripherals (or, if you're <strike>crazy</strike> so inclined, the Wiimote and Nunchuck for "air drumming") the mode lets you and a friend jam in a variety of music genres, laying down single notes, chords, and beats as you wish. According to Vicarious Visions, it'll all sound good because, well, it's programmed to clean up what you do. Take that, years of practice!

What is new, however, is using the holy caricature in an advertisement for Easter services.

In a (successful [and adorable]) attempt to capitalize on the continued popularity of the Nintendo Wii, the Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco has adorned their ads for holy week with the pint-sized Jesus Mii.

Christened with the tagline "Come and Follow Mii," and including a very confused bunny, the ad is surprisingly well put-together, and definitely gives the impression that the church knows their audience. Kudos to them for the slick design.

[Via Eurogamer]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mario Kart Wii snakes into stores April 27

Nintendo has announced that its frantic shell-flinging racer, Mario Kart Wii, will see its long-awaited US release on April 27th. The game will include the "intuitive" Wii Wheel, otherwise described as a large hunk of plastic capable of housing your Wii remote. We envision it being less useful for the actual game and better suited to the imaginary car we'll be driving everywhere, complete with lip-powered puttering and unexpected honking to annoy the coworkers at the office.

Once you stick Mario Kart Wii into your console, you'll be able to compete with up to 11 other drivers online across 32 courses (half of them recycled from previous games). You can also expect to encounter Mii integration, 10 battle arenas, alternate controller support and a festering hatred for blue shells.

We checked out the rumors back in March and checked out the official announcement back at E3, but tonight we finally get a chance to check out the Check Mii Out channel for ourselves.

Upon the first load, the channel asks you to pick a Mii to serve as your "artisan," as sort of signature for any Miis you might choose to share. After that you can choose between two main sections. In the Posting Plaza, you can check out a random assortment of Miis from your region or around the world, and also the most popular Miis as picked by other users. Any Mii you like can be given the "I like it" seal of approval, or be copied and imported directly to your Mii channel. You can also post your created Miis in this section for evaluation.

In the Contests area, you can upload Miis based on certain assigned themes -- the first contest asks for your best "Mario without his cap." Once the contest is done in six days, you'll be able to pick out your favorite entries and view the results.

It's easier to understand if you see it rather than just reading about it, so check out a quick video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

A new Wii channel called the Check Mii Out Channel launches Nov. 11, allowing Wii owners a venue to show off their Mii creations and vote on others. Users download the program for free from the Wii Shop. The channel will have a "Posting Plaza" where users can "submit, exchange or just browse." They''ll be able to look at a random selection of 1,000 Miis or see community favorites, there will also be the ability to tag favorites and import them onto their Wii.

There is also a contest section on the Check Mii Out Channel allowing users to submit their own creation based on a theme like a fictional or historical figure. There's no explanation of what these people win ... bragging rights? We'd be more excited about this if the Miis actually did something in the last year -- although that seems to be changing. Oh well, at least there's Mario Galaxy next week.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pit your Mii against Mario & Sonic at the Olympics

Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Sports, Competitive Gaming
While Miis continue to be the face of Nintendo's push into the uncharted blue ocean of social gaming, the bobble headed avatars have remained criminally underutilized by the bulk of the console's software library. Apparently Sega agrees, as the company confirmed that the little guys and gals (and ninjas, and sith lords...) will be playable as characters in the upcoming Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games.

In addition, Sega has also announced four new over the top 'Dream Events,' making the previously announced normal events seem positively humdrum by comparison. These new events, which will be available as both single and multiplayer matches, look to take a more playful approach to this fan service, offering power ups and character-specific special moves in challenges such as racing, fencing, table tennis, and diving. Given the inclusion of Miis, it will be interesting to see if they are also given abilities of their own, or are left at a disadvantage when matched against these super powered mascots.

Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games just went gold, and is expected to hurdle onto retail shelves for the Wii on November 6.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii Japan getting DS downloads, contest channels

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Online
Come this November, Wii owners in Japan won't have to venture into the wilds of the internet for information on upcoming games or go down to the local retail chain to try out the latest DS titles, as Nintendo has announced plans to launch the Minna no Nintendo Channel (Everybody's Nintendo Channel), promising to turn the Wii into a Nintendo DS Station retail kiosk for the living room.

According to IGN, this latest channel in the Wii's arsenal, which was announced during Nintendo's 2007 Fall press conference in Japan, will offer promo videos for upcoming games, as well as allow players to download playable demos, though the report only mentions DS demos at this time, solidifying the linkage between both the Wii and Nintendo's touchable handheld.

Just the same, we remain thrilled to see Nintendo warming up to the idea of demos, and are hopeful that this could open the door for a similar treatment for Wii games, though sooner rather than later would be nice. In addition, the channel will also include a bit of social networking, allowing players to search for information on games based on data provided by other Wii users.

While less exciting, the Minna no Nintendo Channel will also be joined by the Mii Contest Channel this November in Japan as well, offering a place where players can show off their Mii creations, as well as vote on and even take home other people's Miis. While no release date for either channel has been announced for the U.S. or Europe, we've informed Dr. Zoidberg and he's already packed his bags.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Miyamoto hints at new Nintendo franchise in 2008

Filed under: Culture, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii

In an interview with Dean Takahashi, Shigeru Miyamoto said that Nintendo may introduce some new characters next year "in the same way [Nintendo] came up with Pikmin when [they] introduced the GameCube." While that's all well and good for getting us pumped for The Next Big Thing, we're more interested in Miyamoto's explanation of why it's taking so long.

"I guess I don't necessarily see my job as creating new characters as it is creating new experiences," he said, later adding, "For characters, we came up with the concept of the Miis and that allows people to come up with their own characters." So don't forget you read it here first, the next big Nintendo characters are Chuck Norris, Kenny, Dr. Zoidberg and, of course, indie rockers Wilco. Wow ... the next Smash Bros. is going to be awesome.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mii Popularity Channel announced for North America: Check Mii Out

First mentioned by Takeshi Shimada back in March, Nintendo today announced the Mii Popularity Channel will be making its way to North America sometime soon. Dubbed "Check Mii Out", gamers can submit Miis to be voted on and engage in contests and promotions. Kind of like Hot or Not, but, you know, with cartoon characters. Polish up your Mii likenesses of Stalin and Buddha, it's time for them to take a walk down the runway.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Today in Joystiq: June 21, 2007

In an interview with Gamers.fr, Mario Strikers Charged producer Justin Dowdeswell of Next Level Games said that the friend codes used for online games are tied to your Mii character and does not change between games.

"Each Mii created generates a Mii code that never changes. This code will thus be used for all other online games in the future," said Dowsedell (according to a translation done by Joystiq).

Each Wii console can hold 100 Mii characters. There are one trillion possible 12-digit friend codes; some quick number-crunching reveals that Nintendo can only build ten billion Wii consoles in its lifetime. Only ten billion? Way to limit your sales, Ninty. (We're going to spell this one out: that's sarcasm.)

Update: Falafelkid at Wii: Definitive speculation contacted Dowdeswell via phone, who said that "he never intended to comment on any other titles, nor would he know about how they implemented online features."

Dowsedell comments as they appear above were a translation of his original words done by this writer, which we should have made more clear. However, we feel our translation was accurate to the best of our knowledge. As it was written in the interview: Chaque Mii créé génère un code Mii qui reste invariable par la suite. Ce code servira donc pour tous les autres jeux jouables en ligne dans le futur.

We have contacted Dowsedell ourselves to learn that, indeed, he is not sure and was not speaking for how online will be handled with other games. "We're just aware of how we're handling Strikers stuff ... That's not to say it won't happen, but I'm not aware of that," he said to Joystiq via phone.

We apologize for any misunderstanding of Dowdeswell's words specifically stemming from the phrase "all other online games in the future" (intended to mean Strikers Charged matches and not other Wii games).

[Via The Platformers]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo Media Summit: Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree hands-on (Wii)

Filed under: Features, Nintendo Wii, Puzzle, Casual
The sequel to the DS hit, Big Brain Academy, was shown this week at the Nintendo Media Summit. Dubbed Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree, this version offers tons of new mini-games to test your senses and give your brain a workout. It supports three multiplayer modes for up to 8 players, and 15 new challenges for single-player mode. It also allows you to trade your student data over WiiConnect24 with other players, allowing you to challenge others and compare results. In a nice touch, the game also imports all your friend's codes automatically.

The gameplay is focused on fast-paced small minigames that are meant to help you increase your mental capacities in one of five areas: Identify, Memorize, Analyze, Computer and Visualize. The game tracks your progress and gives you a diagram showing your strengths and weakness in the different categories. To improve a poor stat, you need to play games specific to that category. For example, if your Identify skill is low, you could play "Fast Focus," in which you see a distorted image slowly revealed. The point of the game is to correctly guess the subject of the picture as quickly as you can, using the Wiimote to select the answer from a provided list. "Fast Focus" was probably my favorite of the minigames, but unfortunately I saw quite a few images repeat after only playing it for a short time. Kind of a bad sign for the longevity of that particular minigame, but may have just been a fluke.

Gallery: Big Brain Academy (Wii)

The graphics are clean and fairly minimalistic -- using Miis for characters and being set in a featureless school added to the simple look. The professor character reminds me of a schmoo though, which gave me a constant and unsettling urge to eat him. Other than the slightly cannibalistic tendencies that the game awakens in me, it seems like a solid addition to the Big Brain Academy series. The online features are nice, the graphics are unoffensive, and the gameplay seems solid. It would have been nice to have more challenges, but this should be a solid pickup come June 11th for Wii owners looking to exercise their brains a bit.

New from the evocatively named Nerdy Shirts folks comes this "Mii love you long time" t-shirt. We've decided to catalog several of the more notable ways this shirt qualifies as "nerdy" :

The line is sampled from Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (nerds love Kubrick)

Dropping 2 Live Crew lines -- especially from "Me So Horny" -- is very nerdy

The controversy surrounding "Me So Horny" put attorney-at-lawl Jack Thompson on the map (knowing that is nerdy)

It's teal

Update 4/25 10:50am: Despite appearing on GamesPress this morning (now conveniently missing) and still being mirrored publicly at GamesIndustry.biz, it looks like this strange, terse announcement (and it's accompanying screenshots) for Excite Truck 2 is ... a fake. We've asked Nintendo for a comment on the "announcement." The original post is saved after the break. 11:25am: CVG says, "Nintendo has confirmed [the announcement] to be fake."

After Excite Truck's disappointing lack of online multiplayer (not to mention four-person local multiplayer!), we're heartened to read this terse press release from Nintendo of Canada heralding the sequel's online multiplayer mode. The deets: up to 6 players with accompanying Mii display (see pic) and the beloved Nintendo friend code system (yay!). As if that wasn't already enough information, Nintendo really got particular promising "a lot of options," "a bunch of new tracks," and "better visual effects and shadows!" We tease, of course. We're really excited to see Nintendo implementing multiplayer on the Wii (friend codes be damned!) and the Mii display is a nice touch. Oh, and one of those "new tracks" is the Moon. With low gravity.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Today's Chuckiest video: make your own Chuck Norris Mii

Filed under: Culture, Nintendo Wii, Adventure, Video, Fashion, Casual

Somewhere in the outer limits of the universe, wedged uncomfortably between a zone of unceasing twilight and a dimension where normal things don't happen very often, lies the Mii-rror Universe. It is a peaceful place, populated by eerily silent cartoon doppelgängers, their mannerisms as polite as their heads are bulbous. For each entity in our world -- real or imagined -- there exists a Mii, happily wandering about, napping on its feet and enjoying the company of others.

We've been given glimpses of this Mii-rror Universe before, but none have been as clear as this one. Mii Plaza user, Atkafighter, provides an unobstructed view of the realm and of our own deranged, pop culture universe. Take a good look. One never knows when an omniscient glove might descend upon this fragile world, drag an inhabitant away by its hair and then stick the poor thing in an envelope marked for a destination unknown.

[Via Wii Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
