Yes, if there were anyone we could trust to revitalize this already sterling series of movies, a man with a penchant for weasels and poor capitalization skills would be first on our list.

mink mentioned that the film (which is still in pre-production) will not actually be a sequel, but instead, a "re-envisioning of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom." He also promises that the film will be an "A plus plus" title to try and "capture the magic of the first film." We're not convinced -- between Christopher Lambert's oddly effeminate portrayal of Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's frequent, impassioned delivery of "YOUR SOUL ... IS MINE," we don't think that kind of lightning is capable of striking twice.

Director of next Mortal Kombat movie talks 're-envisioning' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 12:35:00 EST. We haven't been this excited about Mortal Kombat since the first time Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 came out, and we've never had any reason to be excited about a portable Kombat. But this is just too cool. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon told IGN that a version of the classic fighting game will be coming to the DS-- with online play. Attention, developers: this is how you do a port on the DS.

It'll also include Puzzle Kombat, the Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo clone found in Mortal Kombat Deception, which will also be playable online. The game will be out in November, and we look forward to eviscerating all of you at Game Night.

In the game, we mean. We aren't planning to come to your houses and eviscerate any of you. We wouldn't even know how.
Test your might online this November originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 09:50:00 EST. X3F Achievements 101 is back, and on its regularly scheduled time slot of Sundays. Initial response to our first edition was rather positive, so we're glad you like the concept and hope you enjoy reading, and even participating in the column. Emails with Achievement tips also came in at a good pace, and I look forward to playing and trading with you. One particular email stood out, which came from Casey over at brains-N-brawn.com, and the steps he took to get Achievements in one of the most time consuming Arcade games, Bejeweled 2.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities

X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 01:30:00 EST. As well as a couple of trailers for upcoming PS3 games, Sony gave us Mortal Kombat 2. The full release list is as follows.

Mortal Kombat 2 (£1.99)

Colin McRae: DiRT trailer (free)

Isn't it is nice to finally get some playable content with a name that doesn't start with "Go!"? MK2 is a worthwhile purchase, especially considering the low price. We reviewed it in May (back when the Americans got it), giving it a score of nothing-to-write-home-about out of ten. Things can only get better for the PSN though, with upcoming releases of Calling All Cars and Super Stardust HD. Will removing the spines of our friends over the internet keep us occupied until then? We hope so.
European PSN releases for June 8th originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Jun 2007 20:30:00 EST.
What's more brutal than seeing gruesome fatalities performed before your eyes, while blood and bone spill all around and the hopeless fake cries of voice actors echo in your head? A list of moves in the PDF format. Those with weak stomachs should look away from the rawness.

While this isn't as MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAT as, say, screenshots or video would be, we admit that we were pretty curious about how the moves in Mortal Kombat Armageddon were going to be pulled off (not curious enough to buy it, but certainly curious enough to read a thing on the Internet.) We knew waggling would be involved, but it's cool to learn what the specific waggles will be.

This totally reminds us of downloading Mortal Kombat FAQs from Compuserve and leaving them to print from our dot-matrix printer overnight. Sometimes we'd wake up in the morning only to find that our pet dinosaur had shredded all the pages, forcing us to start over.

[Via Joystiq]
Totally visceral presentation of Mortal Kombat fatalities originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 17:30:00 EST. This week, we have a list of Wii releases -- an actual list, which means more than one title. Brilliant! At least, it seems that way until we head out to the shops and peer into our wallets, which immediately shrivel in the face of the epic list of games we want to buy. But we're greedy like that.

So what's it for you this week? Will you bear the brunt of multiple game purchases? Are you going to wait awhile before making any decisions?
Sony has announced that tonight they are releasing the SOE remake of the arcade classic, Rampage World Tour, through the North American PLAYSTATION Store. Priced at the standard rate of a mere $4.99, the downloadable title allows you to play as any of the three classic Rampage characters as you tear down skyscapers and generally terrorize the city. The game also offers multiplayer action for up to three people, online or local - no word on if it supports voice chat though.

I'm pretty stoked about this title myself. I liked Mortal Kombat II a lot, but Gauntlet II was kind of lacking in the fun department. Rampage looks solid though, graphics held up surprisingly well and something about the simple, destructive nature of the gameplay of the original always entertained me.

[Via Press Release]
Rampage World Tour tears up the PS3 tonight originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 May 2007 15:30:00 EST. We're following Mortal Kombat Armageddon with interest, just because of the waggle. We are very curious about trying a waggle-fortified fighting game.

One thing is certain from these screens: Nintendo is definitely not insisting on replacing the blood in this game with viscous grey sweat. Unless they're saying that in the Outworld, people sweat red-- by the gallon, out of gaping neck wounds. We've posted a gallery containing new screens-- FINISH THEM! This is despite previous versions of the game having online play (on PlayStation 2 and Xbox One) and despite the developer's wishes to include online play.

The reason, as Himmerick explains in an interview with Advanced Media Network, was not a technology issue but that "Nintendo didn't have their online system ready for us when we would have needed to implement it," he said. Himmerick said they instead focused on improving the single player aspect: creating an Endurance mode, including a new character and fine tuning the Wii remote controls.

The news comes as further anecdotal evidence that Nintendo is not letting third-party developers put online in their gameplay. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, takes out its aggression on the Wii on May 29.

[Via Nintendo Wii Fanboy]
Mortal Kombat Wii lacks online mode, developer blames Nintendo originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2007 19:25:00 EST. Before we get into our impressions, we'll do as we always do and cite the big-name review sites. Their scores for this game were surprising. There aren't too many reviews on the game, though. Without further ado, here are some of the scores given to MKII.

IGN: 7.3 / 10

GameSpot: 7.9 / 10

What we noticed in these reviews is that the reviewers didn't actually review the title as what it is, rather, as what it was. "Oh, this game was great in 1993!" were slapped over both reviews, listing what the game offered back then and how it still does all those things. What our impressions were entailed how that doesn't matter two kicks of the donkey -- the game as it is now really sucks. Read on to listen to our reasoning, or just flame away for no reason now.
Continue reading Metareview + Our Take: Mortal Kombat II

Metareview + Our Take: Mortal Kombat II originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. We'll be reviewing that title this weekend and here's a teaser -- we aren't pleased. Sales for Midway this first quarter were a reported $11.1 million, down from the previous quarter's $15.4 million. Their net loss is teetering on $19.8 million, which is better than last year and better than anticipated. Most of Midway's killer titles are due out later this year.

CEO David Zucker was pleased, saying the company's performance "exceeded our expectations during the first quarter primarily due to the continuing sales of our holiday 2006 releases and other catalog titles." Heck, those random-number-generating analysts snidely remarked that Midway would only see $8 million in sales by the end of the first quarter.

Still, Midway isn't making that many games -- they're creating a few new titles on the PSP and DS, but the Wii will be getting a remake of MK: Armageddon, the 360 will snag Hour of Victory, and continued sales of Lord of the Rings Online will probably bear the brunt of sales for the rest of the year. We'd like to see more from these guys on the PS3 -- maybe a new IP. We'll keep you posted if anyone gets talked up, but for now, we'll just continue to shrug at these numbers.
Midway reports $11 million sales, $19 million loss originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 23:30:00 EST. A terrible Real World special. That's what. After Armageddon, MK creator Ed Boon said the next title in the franchise will be more realistic-looking and "not going to be like jokes." Indeed. It'll be an edgier move, grittier, dirtier. Darker? Whatever they plan, they're planning from scratch. Other than the idea of it being a fighting game, anything after that is open for consideration. No kart-racing, please.

Boon added this about the upcoming (read: end of 2008) game: "We're not putting any restrictions like we HAVE to keep weapons or we HAVE to keep fighting styles and stuff like that... we're going to... try to introduce as many new characters as possible, new features, new stuff like that and take advantage of the amazing presentation, graphics that all of a sudden you can do, things that are a lot more real." New characters are always welcome, really. As far as features go, Boon and his Boonies (teehee, it's like Goonies) will try to incorporate the SIXAXIS controls in there and use the next-gen consoles as fully as possible. We look forward to seeing what gets revealed... next year.

Mortal Kombat wants to get "real serious" originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 18:15:00 EST. We know the series isn't that old, and, in fact, still exists. But, for example, we can't help but reference the old "PREPARE YOURSELF" slogan from the 1993 print ads when we're talking about any MK game. We miss the old games, and it took the new one to put us in that state.

Looking at the big, empty environments of the new Wii version of Mortal Kombat Armageddon makes us long for the detail-filled stages of the old games, and the sort-of-plain character models remind us of how amusingly hokey the digitized sprites used to be. Those were the days, when we didn't need fancy polygons to enjoy virtually ripping some dude's spine out. We had Claymation bosses and we liked it. It was a simpler time-- a TOASTY!! time.

Screens, with obligatory Wii-gesture diagrams, after the break.
Continue reading PREPARE YOURSELF for new Mortal Kombat Armageddon screens

PREPARE YOURSELF for new Mortal Kombat Armageddon screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Feb 2007 21:31:00 EST. Boon realized that UE3 would be perfect for the next Mortal Kombat after playing Gears of War. "To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy shit! That's the look that we've been talking about" (last we checked, the look you were talking about was people leaving behind 8 rib cages and 12 femurs when they explode). Beyond visual aesthetics, Boon states that his team will be throwing out all the recent iterations of MK and starting again from the ground up. Boon promises a new control scheme and play style. The changeable fighting stances, for instance, will not be returning.

We're excited by the prospects of new Mortal Kombat. The last time Boon and company rebuilt Mortal Kombat, the series received a much needed kick in the pants. Here's hoping the newly redesigned version will become a similarly fresh experience. Don't get too excited though, the game isn't expected to ship until 2008.

[Via Joystiq]
MK8 gets new spine: Unreal Engine 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 10:30:00 EST. Boon revealed that MK8 will be built using Unreal Engine 3, inspired by Epic's recent engine showcase Gears of War. "To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy shit! That's the look that we've been talking about.' Visually, that's what we want to do," explained Boon. Visually.

MK8 is still a fighter at heart, and Boon and the team hope that by starting from scratch, Mortal Kombat can inspire the genre as it did more than a decade ago. "We're not going to have three fighting styles, we're not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We're reinventing everything from the ground up," promised Boon. Don't expect any solid details for some time; Boon admitted that MK8 is currently not in a playable state, supposing that its release won't come until the end of 2008.

While Boon hinted at the possibility of MK8 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, it should be noted that Epic's Mark Rein recently told Wired that "it's not in [Epic's] plans to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. It's really designed for next-gen, high-definition." Oh snap!
Mortal Kombat 8 inspired by Gears of War, using Unreal Engine 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Feb 2007 23:25:00 EST. What we want to know is -- which franchises do you really want to see on the DS, and which ones do you hope stay far, far away?
DS Daily: On franchises originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 10:00:00 EST. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise Pokémon (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, Donkey Kong and Zelda. So what's Nintendo's secret?

Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.
Continue reading Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability

Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 18:23:00 EST. Though it was yanked in a matter of minutes, one new entry stood out like an atomic mushroom cloud in a serene, children's playground. Not to imply that Psychonauts is capable of melting children or flooding large masses of land with deadly radiation, but its presence was rather devastating to the psyche.

In case you weren't aware (and clearly you aren't much of the time), Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine did extraordinary things with Psychonauts, managing to take the seemingly incompatible platformer and adventure genres and mash them together like two pieces of clay. That's before they twisted the whole mess into a variety of amusing shapes.

Oh, there's a whole bunch of other new games too. However, when asked about the exact release date of this December update, Microsoft warned us that the list is not final. All of the titles feature "M" ratings, but meh... parents are too busy to actually look at ratings! Here are the games to avoid, with PSP titles bolded:

Gangs of London *
The Sopranos
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories *
Reservoir Dogs
Mortal Kombat: Unchained *
Scarface: The World is Yours
The Godfather: Mob Wars *
Saints Row
Dead Rising
Just Cause

This list tells me one thing: the PSP really is for the mature crowd. Four of those titles are either exclusive, or enhanced on the PSP, making this system easily much more evil than the childish DS counterpart. At least the Institute recommends Loco Roco for the holidays, which should distract the kids from downloading porn onto their systems.

[Via Joystiq]
PSP dominates on list of games for parents to avoid originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 13:45:00 EST. So when we caught wind of a Jack Thompson sighting in Armageddon we figured Midway was at it again. Alas, it was too good to be true, and the Thompson appearance was simply the result of some clever work in Armageddon's Kreate-A-Fighter mode.

The good news is that you can easily recreate the Thompson clone with Gaming Target's detailed guide. But the fun doesn't stop there, there's instructions for molding an eclectic band of misfits that includes Evil Dead's Ash, Friday the 13th's Jason, Hulk Hogan, and Silent Bob. That squad's a good foundation for a solid fighter in and of itself. Toasty!
Jack Thompson in new Mortal Kombat originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:00:00 EST. The gore-fest made a brief appearance last night and promptly vanished with a puff of smoke, only to reappear sometime after midnight. We suspect the decision was made following its accidental release last night, though those among us with tinfoil hats purport that Microsoft is orchestrating the entire mishap to keep our minds off of more luminary XBLA headlines.

Costing 800 MS points, UMK3 is sporting current-week and all-time leaderboards, online two-on-two multiplayer, and four player "winner-stays-on" online tournaments. According to Major Nelson, many people are not seeing the game show up, to which he assures us that he is "escalating." Which likely means that he is telling his superiors, and not riding escalators up and down over and over again to his little heart's content.

[Thanks to every one who sent this in.]
Mortal Kombat spears Xbox Live in the chest originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Oct 2006 12:37:00 EST. Since XBLA games are historically released on Wednesdays, we're betting an (now possibly unemployed) Xbox Live employee hit the wrong key.

We now know that UMK3 will be 43.62 MB in size, cost 800 MS points, and feature 2-4 player multiplayer. A few lucky gamers (not us) managed to purchase and download the full game, and show off their gamertags as proof. Something tells us, regardless of earlier plans, that next Wednesday will be rather fatalistic. It's the final battle between good and evil! That's the end of it, right? No more krazy kombat? Nah. It's just the end of this console generation and in the minds of the MK team, the end of the fighting mechanics we're used to.

On the next game, we've been told to expect "a bunch of brand new characters, a whole new fighting system, a new presentation with the new graphics for the new consoles, as well as a new control scheme to take advantage of some of the new technology available." This is coming from Ed Boon, creative director of the MK team. So it's all going to be new! Well, a few of the old character may stick around, but even so, this is great news! This intrepid blogger always enjoys new installments of a series where the slate is wiped clean, so to speak.
Next-Gen Mortal Kombat opens a whole new chapter originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Sep 2006 10:30:00 EST. This makes us smile since he had made comments before that the Wii isn't a great place for fighting games. He has taken those hurtful comments back stating that it will be a good challenge to fit the game for the system.

Mortal Kombat happens to be one of our favorite fighting games (entering the blood code while our parents weren't watching gave us quite the adrenaline rush) and we are thrilled to hear that the king of fighting gore is appearing on the Wii, especially when it brings every single MK character with it in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Anyway, MK god Ed Boon had a lot of nice things to say about the Wii including pearls like:

"I hope the Wii is going to carve out its own market and will be very successful. As budgets for game development keeps going up and the prices for each system does the same, the Wii will become a more and more attractive option for both gamers as well as developers."

When it came to talking about Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, he let us know that they are currently trying to find a way to fully utilize the Wiimote in this rather sticky transition. After all, we doubt you will find solace from fatalities with the usual combo breaker.

Boon also stated that he would love to see classic Mortal Kombat games be a part of the Virtual Console. Again, we can't help but smile and twist our fingers in anticipation for Armageddon to reach our bloodthirsty fingers.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon interview originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Sep 2006 19:00:00 EST. Play-Nintendo has a "reliable list" (yeah, we know how those are) of games that are rumored to be on the Virtual Console. But it looks reasonable, and in fact, some of the titles are already confirmed by various sources. Their list is packed with classic titles, and some of them (oh, Castlevania, how we love you) are expected but still exciting, and others many of us still play on lazy Sunday afternoons (Ocarina of Time, anyone?) If this list turns out to be the real deal, we may have to take some extended breaks from our actual Wii games. A fanboy's life is full of difficult choices.

Play-Nintendo also reports that their "source" confirmed five brand new games for the Virtual Console, but they couldn't reveal the details. We'll see.

What are you dying to see? Frankly, we think Super Mario Bros. 3 is a necessity, if only because we know there'd be videos everywhere of fanboys reenacting scenes from The Wizard.

If you could add any three games to this list, what would you choose?

Full list after the jump.
Continue reading Speculating on the Virtual Console [Update 1]

Speculating on the Virtual Console [Update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 07:01:00 EST. The adapter allows players to use a Sega Saturn control on the 360. Considered by many to have the best d-pad and button layout ever, the Saturn controller is perfect for Street Fighter II or the upcoming Mortal Kombat. The adapter is still a prototype -- and ugly as sin -- but the functionality is promising. The unit is (technically) wireless, though I'd pay for the same thing with a USB adapter.

If you'd like to learn more about it -- or make one yourself -- check out the forums at Xbox-Scene. Zucker stood behind Sony's ever popular pricing decision with many points given similar to the breakdown of a bargain posted the other day. He mentioned the very inclusion of a Blu-Ray player and all features that come with that makes it worth the price. If the market for Blu-Ray takes off and it becomes the norm, it helps not only the PS3 all the more, but the Blu-Ray world as well.

While PS3 does gather a lot of bad press, this is yet another very large, recognizable company name that does indeed lend support to Sony. Just a basic checklist of companies (well, person/persons in a company, but for generalization) that support Sony so far include, but aren't limited to: Square-Enix, Konami, EA, Midway and Activision. It may not seem like much, but it's better than being surrounded by flame.

[Update: Fixed a typo.]
Midway goes all the way to lend a shoulder to Sony [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Jul 2006 23:45:00 EST. I can't believe there's morethan one of these!

Nevertheless, this one has a video game twist. Instead of singing some random song, they're singing along to the unmistakable beats of Mortal Kombat. While wecan't begrudge their enthusiasm, we want to remind any potential webcam superstars that the Internet will be around for a long time. Search capabilities will only improve.

If you want your fellow Marines, during the bloody spacewars of 2037battling the Zebesian Space Pirates, to do a quick Google[TM] search during a late night game of cards and come upwith a video of their sergeant dancing around, wrestling, mouthing the lyrics to Mortal Kombat during a stirring performance -- complete with costume changes -- of Le Kombat Mortal, then be my guest. I encourage everyone else to exercisediscretion. In the meantime: "Fight!"

This has been a Joystiq public service announcement.

(Note: For the curious: the guy in the background of the picture, with his shorts down, appears to beurinating into his closet, while the guy in the foreground is doing his best Sonya. And he's blind. We've written about the 18-year old gamer and his peculiar talentbefore and now it looks like hisfame is spreading around the globe. By using sound to gauge his performance in the game, Brice has been able to defeathis challengers, as he did on Sunday in a best out of three competition. He has been invited to travel to Japan laterthis month to compete with some of Japan's best Mortal Kombat players for aspecial on Nippon TV.

There has to be some kind of psych-out factor at play too. A viral advert for Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks hasbeen banned by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority after the watchdog found it "irresponsible" since it"caused serious distress". The ad appeared on two websites, and despite the owners having no complaints, theywere made to pull the ad.

The "shocking" content of the advert involved a fight at aboard meeting, with one man having his heart ripped out and another being decapitated--both sights that modern gamersare increasingly familiar with, and unlikely to findparticularly offensive. With this advertisement being pulled, will the ASA start monitoring other Flash creations onthe web? It would keep them very busy if they did, as there are far more shocking animations out there.

Mortal Kombat ad deemed irresponsible in the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Dec 2005 15:30:00 EST.
