Midway announced today that <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em> has shipped "approximately" 1.8 million units for Xbox 360 and PS3. Unlike <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/eidos-looking-to-reinvent-croft-again/">another publisher</a>, Midway is taking the shipped figure as a positive sign for the franchise. Ed Boon, creative director for <em>Mortal Kombat</em>, stated the group is already working on the "next version of <em>Mortal Kombat</em>," with details forthcoming.<br /><br />As much as this is positive news for the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/midway-stalls-for-more-time-still-scrounging-up-cash/">Death is still knocking on Midway's door</a>. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/midway">Midway</a>'s holiday hopes (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/midway-report-76m-in-losses-for-q308-pins-q4-hope-on-mk-vs-dc/">financial future</a>) pinned on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a></em>, it appears the <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sb=0&amp;tfs=all&amp;ts=mortal+kombat+vs.+dc&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">reviewers</a> aren't going to help the company out. Barring major outlier <a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/61-20449/reviews/">Giant Bomb</a> and its 5/5, most outlets appear to be sticking around 80 and below. If it does well at retail, <em>MK vs. DC</em> may help prevent the publisher from hearing an ominous voice-over: "Finish him!"<br />

    <li><a href="http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/207930/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-ps3/">GamePro</a> <strong>(80/100)</strong>: "Though far from a technical fighting game, <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em> exceeds expectations by delivering a solidly enjoyable casual fighter. The Mature-rated gore is missed, but the core combat here feels more confident and energetic than it has in years."</li>
    <li><a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/929/929012p1.html">IGN</a> <strong>(75/100)</strong>: "<em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em> is fun and a solid entry into the franchise, but I doubt many folks will find it entertaining past a rental. Casual players will punch through the storyline before burning out after getting stumped by one or two Kombo Challenges, while Mortal Kombat fans will have trouble accepting the toned down Fatalities and somewhat slower gameplay."<span class="text_article_body"></span></li>
    <li><span class="text_article_body"><a href="http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/mortal-kombat-next-gen/931343p1.html">GameSpy</a> (<strong>70/100)</strong>: "</span>Though <em>MK vs. DC</em> purports to shake up the franchise, the reality is that among the many new touches that the game adds it still lacks the depth of other fighters available today. Again, it doesn't feel dramatically different from its predecessors, save for new mini-game modes and a big facelift. The movesets are rather generic (most are a variation of "down, forward, button") and feel a tad antiquated. Its big hook (the crossover license) can't justify the relatively shallow fighting on hand." </li>
    <li><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3171368&amp;p=37">1UP</a> <strong>(B-)</strong>: (Calculated as 67 on Metacritic) "<em>MK vs. DCU</em> is an oddly enjoyable distraction from "real" fighters. Its masher-friendly controls appeal to me in a casual-gamer way, and the midmatch minigames (damage-percentage tugs-of-war, airborne ass-kickings with the defender mirroring the aggressor's button-presses in a bid for dominance) give the fights a sort of party-game vibe."</li>

<em>Mortal Kombat</em> creator (kreator?) Ed Boon has come forward, labeling <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/midway-cuts-chicago-staff/">recent reports</a> of Midway's Chicago branch handing out pink slips to many of the individuals who worked on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC</em></a> as "completely false." Last week, numerous outlets reported that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/midway-report-76m-in-losses-for-q308-pins-q4-hope-on-mk-vs-dc/">troubled publisher and developer</a> let go of around 20 to 30 employees following the completion of both the recent cross-universe brawler and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Blitz-The-League-II/"><em>Blitz: The League II</em></a>.<br /><br />However, speaking in <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/features/interview-ed-boon-on-the-ups-and-downs-of-the-mortal-kombat-franchise/?biz=1&amp;page=1">an interview</a> with GameDaily, Boon asserts that the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> team specifically is still together, and is already brainstorming on what to work on next. He adds that the crew is sizing up <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC</em>'s performance, as "it will have a good amount to do with what features we put in the next game." Of course, this says nothing of those in The Windy City who worked specifically on Midway's sequel to <em>Blitz</em>, or if the company decided to have them <em>go long</em> all the way to the unemployment line.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/boon-talks-midway-layoffs-next-mortal-kombat/">Boon talks Midway layoffs, next Mortal Kombat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 14:15:00 EST. You've read the headline and you're probably thinking, "Oh, great. Just what we need. <em>Another</em> article effusing praise for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead"><em>Left 4 Dead</em></a>. Thanks. Thank you so much." In truth, yes, we're excited that <em>Left 4 Dead</em> is coming out this week, but the reality of the headline is best understood by glancing at the list below. There are twelve, <em>twelve</em> new games being released this week. If that's not enough to metamorphose every respectable gamer into a gibbering, cash-starved zombie, we're not sure what is. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have suddenly developed an irresistible craving for <strike>braaains</strike> gaaames.<br /><br />

We were ready to lambast the cheesiness of it. And yet, strangely, we find ourselves <em>reveling </em>in it. The idea that the universes of <em>Mortal Kombat</em> and DC are merging together seems appropriate enough, especially given the comic book context. The explanation that Superman can be hurt by magic and, thus, Scorpion, seems plausible enough. In fact, forget the cheese, forget the cliches, the shear amount of fanboy minutia being flung about is all that really matters. Sad news DC and <em>Mortal Kombat</em> fans, Midway's quest for a Teen ESRB rating has taken its first victims. Some of the content in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe</span></a>, you see, has been scaled back in order to keep the dreaded 'M' rating off of the box. According to <a href="http://kotaku.com/5068657/mk-vs-dc-the-jokers-fatality-gets-t+rated">Kotaku</a>, who spoke with Midway's Ed Boon, <em>Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe</em> has been submitted to the ESRB three times, making minor changes each time in order to move the game from a Mature rating to Teen. The most painful fatality in this process (pun intented), is that the Joker's awesome, <em>awesome</em> "bang" fatality (see it after the break) has been changed, as the final headshot is now performed offscreen.<br /><br />So, in a nutshell, the series that <em>spawned</em> the ESRB is now bound to it. Midway needs its money though, and a T rating will sell more copies, which explains why the company is <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQHfoz9Be7U"><em>so serious</em></a> about it.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-toned-down-to-keep-t-rating/">Joystiq</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/mk-vs-dc-universe-softened-for-teen-rating/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MK vs DC Universe softened for Teen rating</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/mk-vs-dc-universe-softened-for-teen-rating/">MK vs DC Universe softened for Teen rating</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. Midway is in desperate need of a best-selling blockbuster, as any industry analyst will tell you that the 50-year-old company is circling the drain. While Midway is likely banking on the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Mortal%20Kombat%20vs.%20DC%20Universe">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a> </em>to fill that role, an increasing amount of violence within the title has apparently pushed the game to M-rated territory -- which typically doesn't help sales during the holiday season. Therefore, we can't say we're surprised at Midway's decision to tone down the "toasty" brawler in order to keep the T-rating <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ed-boon-clarifies-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-fatalities/">they've been shooting for</a>.<br /><br />In a recent <a href="http://kotaku.com/5068657/mk-vs-dc-the-jokers-fatality-gets-t+rated">interview with Kotaku</a>, Ed Boon explained that the developer had been working with the ESRB to squeeze as much brutality into the game while still remaining teen-friendly. However, one known casualty of some recent content cutbacks is the Joker's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/watch-the-jokers-mk-vs-dc-fatality/">wicked "prank gun" fatality</a> (posted after the break), the <em>fatal</em> part of which will now take place off-screen. It's unclear what else has been changed to appease the ESRB, though it's safe to assume that the final product won't contain any unceremoniously removed spinal cords, or, lamentably, disappearing pencils.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-toned-down-to-keep-t-rating/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe toned down to keep T-rating</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-toned-down-to-keep-t-rating/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe toned down to keep T-rating</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST. Midway has <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20081014006648&amp;newsLang=en">announced</a> that its crossover brawler <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe"><em>Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe</em></a> will hit stores in November 16 in the US and on November 21 in Europe. In just one month, you'll be able to pit the likes of Wonder Woman and Sonya Blade in a battle to the death. Well, the near death if you happen to be playing as a hero. Who will you choose? Who will come out on top? DC? Mortal Kombatants? The answer is neither. When you pit these two forces together, the one who wins is simple: Midway.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/mk-vs-dc-universe-decapitates-retail-november-16/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/mk-vs-dc-universe-brutalizes-stores-november-16/">MK vs DC Universe brutalizes stores November 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 15:15:00 EST. I confess. I haven't touched the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> series since <em>Trilogy</em> on N64, and even then my interest had waned. The peak came in 1993 or thereabouts with <em>MKII</em>, so you can imagine the eyebrow raise when associate producer Hector Sanchez told me <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc" linkindex="110" set="yes"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a> was taking it back to that iconic memory. Stopping short of digitized sprites and random outbursts of weirdness, <em>MK vs. DC</em> does succeed as an accessible fighter that's mostly contained on a two-dimensional plane. Call it "casual" -- Midway does.<br /><br />Game development has become ridonkulously expensive, and if you're creating a project within a niche genre, like a fighting game, you'd best sell out if you want to be around long enough to make another game. That's a harsh way to qualify what's happening all around the industry -- and let's be clear: <em>MK vs. DC</em> in no way stoops to the level of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/castlevania-judgment-its-like-soulcalibur-legends-but-better/"><em>Castlevania Judgment</em></a> -- but somehow "casual" has become careless, as if developers are afraid <em>ordinary</em> consumers won't appreciate good art. A certain amount of color, call it the "Noob Saibot" effect, seems wiped from the <span style="font-style: italic;">MK</span> canvas. Gone is that unsophisticated humor that was always charming, if not entirely professional. (Where's that "Toasty" guy? What ever happened to reverting opponents to diapered infants?) With this in mind, and DC legal breathing down Midway's neck (we wouldn't want Supe's golden-boy reputation tarnished, not with a movie reboot possible, would we?), the team is tiptoeing to a final release.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/doh-pad-a-visit-with-mk-vs-dc-on-xbox-360/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DOH-pad: A visit with MK vs. DC on Xbox 360</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/doh-pad-a-visit-with-mk-vs-dc-on-xbox-360/">DOH-pad: A visit with MK vs. DC on Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 11:25:00 EST. The queue of people looking to take advantage of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a>'s plot devices and punch Superman to death continues to grow, with a <strike>unconfirmed</strike> list of <a href="http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/mortal-kombat-vs-DC-universe/achievements/">Xbox 360 Achievements</a> revealing several previously unannounced characters. The relatively straightforward challenges task players with performing the "expert combos" for several kombatants, both known -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/joker-green-lantern-duke-it-out-in-new-mk-vs-dc-screens/">Batman, The Joker, Scorpion etc.</a> -- and until now, unknown.<br /><br />The latter category features intergalactic menace Darkseid, sinister slap-head Lex Luthor and Outworld favorite Baraka, who probably wasn't hugged much as a child. Peer past the break for the complete list of known characters while we poke Midway for confirmation.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> One curt comment: "Midway has not officially released the Xbox 360 achievements for MK vs. DCU."<br /><strong>Update 2: </strong>Midway has just confirmed the full lineup of characters. You'll find 'em all after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rumor-mk-vs-dc-achievements-reveal-lex-luthor-darkseid-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MK vs. DC Achievements reveal Lex Luthor, Darkseid, more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rumor-mk-vs-dc-achievements-reveal-lex-luthor-darkseid-more/">MK vs. DC Achievements reveal Lex Luthor, Darkseid, more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. So what's the problem with the Joker's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Mortal%20Kombat%20vs.%20DC%20Universe">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a> </em>fatality (seen at about 3:40 into the video after the break)? Well, nothing per se, it's a perfectly silly, violent way for the criminal mastermind to finish off his foes, and is actually surprisingly brutal for the game's Teen rating.<br /><br />No, the only real problem is what the attack <em>isn't</em>. As fans of <em>The Dark Knight</em> know, the Joker's real fatality is <em>blindingly</em> obvious. Because, honestly, who doesn't love a good magic trick?<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/watch-the-jokers-mk-vs-dc-fatality/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch the Joker's MK vs. DC fatality</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/watch-the-jokers-mk-vs-dc-fatality/">Watch the Joker's MK vs. DC fatality</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:30:00 EST. Let's put a smile on that face by checking out Midway's latest batch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a> screenshots, rife with cross-dimensional brawling and enough continuity issues to drive fanboys round the bend. While you enjoy the sight of The Joker blasting Scorpion right out of the Batcave or the Green Lantern putting the squeeze on Shang Tsung, we'll frantically attempt to figure out how Ed Boon managed to steal all our closeted fan fictions. <br /><br />If these guys don't pummel your fancy, Midway has also informed us that series stalwarts Raiden and Kano will join the game's kombatants, along with the DC universe's Wonder Woman and Deathstoke.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (08/20/2008)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/#988862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/wonderwoman_render_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/#988861"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/greenlantern_render_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/#987777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/mk-vs-dc-leipzig08-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/#987776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/mk-vs-dc-leipzig08-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-08-20-2008/#987775"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/mk-vs-dc-leipzig08-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/joker-green-lantern-duke-it-out-in-new-mk-vs-dc-screens/">GC 2008: Joker, Green Lantern duke it out in new MK vs. DC screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 15:00:00 EST. Siliconera <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/07/25/the-joker-enters-mortal-kombat/">brings word</a> from San Diego Comic-Con that more karacters have been added to the roster of Midway's crossover fighter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a>. Specifically, the site confirms Jax and Kitana from the <em>MK</em> games are set to appear, along with DC Comics characters Green Lantern and the clown prince of crime himself, Joker. The site speculates that, since villains in <em>MK vs. DC</em> will be able to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ed-boon-clarifies-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-fatalities/">perform fatalities</a>, Joker could conceivably kill Superman. We're not sure how happy DC would be about that, so don't get <em>too</em> excited.<br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/07/25/the-joker-enters-mortal-kombat/"></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/25/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-adds-a-killing-joker/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe adds a killing Joker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. Even cynics like us have to admit at least a passing curiosity with the nerd orgasm that is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a> and its cross-universe roster. Earlier today we approached the game's production coordinator, Hector Sanchez, and while he would not let us in on the game's complete lineup, he admitted that the team is looking to feature between 20 to 25 characters, "split up evenly half and half, and then split up again between heroes and villains."<br /><br />Additionally, while talking about possible alternate costumes or other unlockables, Sanchez told us that the team is "planning to support downloadable content," before stopping short and saying he "was going to say something" but couldn't. Downloadable characters seems the obvious source of his pursed lips, making us continue wondering what comic book icons will be further ground beneath the heel of Midway's floundering franchise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/mk-vs-dc-to-have-20-characters-download-support/">MK vs. DC to have 20+ characters, download support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 22:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Scorpion vs. Batman. Catwoman vs. Subzero. Here at E3, Joystiq got to sit down with Brian Lebaron, senior designer for the game, and we talked about why it's OK to set the Flash on fire, why Bizarro probably won't be in the game, and what Midway is doing to Toasty uppercut the fighting genre.<br /> <br /> After the break, find our hands on with the game, as well as details from our chat with Lebaron. When <em>MK vs. DC</em> comes out, you'll finally be able to find out whether Liu Kang's kicks can catch the Flash in the jaw.<br /> </div>

Well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/first-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-gameplay-trailer-is-toasty/">the gameplay is here</a> and it doesn't do the job we were quite hoping for. When Ed Boon explained that the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Mortal%20Kombat%20vs.%20DC%20Universe">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a></em> would explore <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ed-boon-clarifies-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-fatalities/">the <em>softer side</em> of the series</a> with Teen-rated acts of pugilistic carnage, many fans were upset, as it seemed their thirst for evisceration would go unslaked. <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/07/05/mk-vs-dc-new-screens-plus-brutalities/">The latest salvo of screenshots for the brawler from Midway</a> might confirm or ease your fears of a censored <em>MK</em> title -- no, there's no evidence of any <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-HzJjfH50w">impromptu spine-removal procedures</a>, but there's pummeling and arm-breaking aplenty. Does the latest entry in the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTyIKnRQdx0&amp;NR=1"><em>toasty</em></a> franchise look gruesome enough for your sinister bloodlust?<br />

While the main of that question is still up in the air, one small part of it has <a href="http://www.worldscollide.com/">now been answered</a> (for those few who really care). See, the very first episode of the MKast went up recently and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/mk-vs-dc-includes-modified-fatalities/">promised again</a> to its followers that the game would in fact feature the series' signature Fatalities. <br /><br />Bu- bu- bu- but Batman doesn't kill! Indeed. To rectify this, the DC characters will have what are known as Brutalities instead. Just like a Fatality, except, y'know, not fatal. In a brief interview with <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/mortalkombat/news.html?sid=6192868">Gamespot</a>, Midway's Ed Boon has (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/midway-modifying-fatalities-for-mk-vs-dc/">once again</a>) discussed the return of fatalities in upcoming cross-brand brawler, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mk-vs-dc"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a>. The infamous finishing moves will be performed by all Mortal Kombatants and DC Comics villains, but not by any of DC's untarnished heroes. You know, the ones "who don't kill that often." Instead, nicer folks like The Flash will have "brutalities," moves which inflict pain upon the recipients without totally murdering them.<br /><br />Of course, don't expect the levels of violence and depravity to be quite up there (down there?) with previous <em>Mortal Kombat</em> games, as Ed Boon mentions that this Unreal-powered showdown is still pushing a slightly Tamer boundary. "Certain animations, blood effects, and sound effects that we have in the game are really pushing the T-rating envelope," he said. We're sure gore hounds will find this worthy of debate, but we're more concerned about everything that happens <em>before</em> the fatality. <br /><br />Let's hope E3 grants us the opportunity to beat the snot out of that smug Superman.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1075734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/mkvsdc.ps3box_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1075729"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/mkvsdc.360box_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056839"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056838"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056837"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ed-boon-clarifies-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-fatalities/">Ed Boon clarifies Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe fatalities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST. Hot off the heels of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-podcast/">announcing a new podcast</a> related to the development of the upcoming fighter, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a></em>, a potential list of special edition extras was teased today. Gamers on Midway's mailing list for more info on <em>MK vs. DC</em> were treated with a survey earlier today that asked which extra they would be interested in if a "Kollector's Edition" was made available.<br /><br />Possible extras include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Comic Book</li>
    <li>Art Book</li>
    <li>Soundtrack</li>
    <li>T-shirt</li>
    <li>Animation Cell</li>
    <li>Exclusive DC video</li>
    <li>Making of MK vs DC video </li>
</ul>
To be honest we'd like something a bit cooler that deserves the extra few dollars. Not that an art book isn't nice, but how about a statue of Batman punching the lights out of Sub-Zero? Or you know, Kryptonite. In case Superman loses it and someone needs to take him out. Well, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat/"><em>Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe</em></a> project (and indeed the series as a whole) has had a distinct tongue-in-cheek cheek feeling to it the entire time. And now, the developers appear to be embracing that mystique by starting up a podcast focused on the game. Scheduled to hit the tubes in a few weeks, the first episode is going to <a href="http://forums.midway.com/mortal_kombat_vs_dc_universe/b10806/28535288/p1/">feature questions</a> from message board posters, and we think we're going to give it a listen just for pure irony's sake. <br /><br />We don't at all intend to insult the game or the developers, it's just that ... unless the show isn't very regular, we can't imagine that there's going to be a whole lot to discuss, it's a fighting game. The story isn't very deep, the character selection is supposed to be a bit of a secret, and the mechanics can't be too complicated so as to appeal to a wide audience. Basically, we hope it can pleasantly surprise us by actually being great.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-podcast/">Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe ... The <a href="http://www.worldscollide.com/">official website</a> for Midway's Unreal-powered, cross-dimensional brawler, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-crossing-over-in-fall-08/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a>, has posted the first shot of what appears to be Superman's 3D model. As you can see, the developers have managed to capture the Kryptonian's chiseled features, indestructible physique and patriotic pose quite well. So well, in fact, that we're left feeling a little sorry for the mere mortal kombatants.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1075734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/mkvsdc.ps3box_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1075729"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/mkvsdc.360box_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056839"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056838"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/#1056837"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/09/mk-vs-dc21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/midway-shows-off-superman-in-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/">Midway shows off Superman in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 11:29:00 EST. When Midway announced that DC characters were splicing worlds with <em>Mortal Kombat </em>for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-crossing-over-in-fall-08/">a T-rated fighting game</a>, we prepared our eulogy for the fatality, a staple of the <em>MK </em>universe that seemed to run against the <a href="http://www.comixtreme.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-23394.html">DC philosophy</a>. Not so fast, says <em>MK</em> series creator Ed Boon, who hints that the violent sendoffs will still be there, albeit in a tamer fashion.<br /><br />In an interview with <a href="http://www.gametap.com/articles/gamefeatures/mortal_kombats_creator_talks-05072008">GameTap</a>, Boon notes that the developer never <em>explicitly</em> stated fatalities were going away. "We did acknowledge that we won't be able to do the same kinds of outrageous moves, like tearing someone's head off and the spine being attached to it," he says, adding, "My response is that, no, we're modifying fatalities. But I have every intention to keep finishers."<br /><br />What's left is to define, then, the nature of the fatality. Are they inherently ultra-violent? So far that answer's been yes, with the extreme alternatives being Friendships and Babalities. For now, we'll just have to wait for the screenshots to show us some kind of finisher that satiates our blood-thirsty desires. <br /><br />After the break, a collection of fatalities from the series.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/midway-modifying-fatalities-for-mk-vs-dc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Midway 'modifying fatalities' for MK vs. DC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/midway-modifying-fatalities-for-mk-vs-dc/">Midway 'modifying fatalities' for MK vs. DC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 15:28:00 EST. When we heard about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-crossing-over-in-fall-08/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a>, the first thing we asked ourselves was, "Why?" The second thing we asked ourselves was, "No really, <em>why</em>?" Then we started to wonder, though, why this game wasn't heading to the Wii. It's not that we're going to miss it (although we're sure some of you might, and that's completely fine). It's just that the decision to snub the Wii doesn't seem to make any business sense. The Wii does have a <em>pretty large</em> userbase, after all, and according to the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> series' co-creator and executive producer, Ed Boon, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/totally-visceral-presentation-of-mortal-kombat-fatalities/"><em>Armageddon</em></a> did well on the Wii. In <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em>, were graphics really going to be <em>that</em> much of an issue?<br /><br />As it turns out, the issue is the Unreal Engine. Since the newest version of the engine <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/unreal-engine-3-being-adapted-for-wii/">doesn't <em>officially</em> exist</a> for the Wii, the developers thought it would be too challenging to bring the game to Nintendo's console. Yet, according to Boone, they're not against the idea. If they're waiting for Epic to support the Unreal Engine on the Wii, though, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/an-epic-diss/">they better not hold their breath</a>. Whether or not Midway will one day use the unofficial engine and port the game to the Wii remains to be seen.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=40721">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/no-wii-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-due-to-unreal-engine/">No Wii Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe due to Unreal Engine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:15:00 EST. <div align="left">Midway has announced the latest in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Mortal Kombat</span> series. <span style="font-style: italic;">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</span> sees your favourite<span style="font-style: italic;"> MK<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span></span>characters fight against selected DC Comics mainstays such as Superman or Batman. With a storyline written by "the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> creative team and top comic scribes Jimmy Palmiotti (<em>Painkiller Jane, Marvel Nights, Jonah Hex, 21 Down</em>) and Justin Gray (<em>Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, JLA Classified, Punisher Red X-Mas, The Resistance</em>)" we can expect to see the game hit shelves this Autumn.<br /><br />There's not much more information about the title, but there <span style="font-style: italic;">is</span> a video, which we've placed after the break. It's worth a look, for sure. Even if <span style="font-style: italic;">MKvDCU</span> isn't an M-rated game. Does that make the game a little less interesting? We expect for hardcore <span style="font-style: italic;">Mortal Kombat</span> fans, that might be the case.<br /></div>

Despite the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-gets-confirmation-trailer/">trailer koming out earlier today</a>, here's the "official" announcement of <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em>. The storyline for the game will be written by the "<em>Mortal Kombat </em>creative team," with comic writers Jimmy Palmiotti (<em>Painkiller Jane, Marvel Nights, Jonah Hex, 21 Down</em>) and Justin Gray (<em>Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, JLA Classified, Punisher Red X-Mas, The Resistance</em>), and will weave the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> and DC Universe's together into a cohesive narrative -- at least, that's the plan.<br /><br />Ed Boon, executive producer for <em>Mortal Kombat</em>, says, "Players will now be able to answer the question: what would happen if Batman fought Sub Zero?" It's an interesting question to think about now, but we're pretty confident that up until 24 hours ago -- when news of this game <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/04/17/rumor-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-comics/">first started leaking out</a> -- that pairing never came up in a "Picard vs. Kirk" style geek-off. We're sure to learn a lot more about this non M-rated version of <em>Mortal Kombat</em> at E3. For now, philosophically speaking, if a <em>Mortal Kombat </em>game doesn't have fatalities, is it still <em>Mortal Kombat</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-crossing-over-in-fall-08/">Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossing over in Fall '08</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 19:00:00 EST. The forty-seven second trailer shows more than expected, including a few gameplay snippets with Batman and Sub-Zero, as well as some of the possible environmental interactions (breaking through walls). From what is seen though, it looks very much like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat:_Deadly_Alliance"><em>Deadly Alliance</em></a> and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat:_Deception">Deception</a>,</em> only there isn't any of the trademark blood or gore that was rumored to be absent. While this whole thing may be a ridiculous idea, does it really matter if the gameplay can be pulled off in a fun way? Regardless, we'll likely learn more at the end of the day when the embargo finally ends.<br /><br />[Update: Added <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/video/943567/6189499/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-video-interview-1">Gamespot's</a> interview video after the break]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Videos [Update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-trailer/">Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Videos [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 14:30:00 EST. Officially titled <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em> the game <a href="http://mortalkombatonline.com/">was confirmed</a> at Midway's Las Vegas event, and included a single piece of <a href="http://i30.tinypic.com/16j3rme.jpg">teaser art</a> featuring a certain dark winter's knight and a more traditional <em>MK</em> frozen fighter. Not much is known at this time, but now that it's officially official, let the nerdy character speculation begin!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/guess-what-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-is-what/">Guess what?
