<em>Mortal Kombat</em> creator (kreator?) Ed Boon has come forward, labeling <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/midway-cuts-chicago-staff/">recent reports</a> of Midway's Chicago branch handing out pink slips to many of the individuals who worked on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC</em></a> as "completely false." Last week, numerous outlets reported that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/midway-report-76m-in-losses-for-q308-pins-q4-hope-on-mk-vs-dc/">troubled publisher and developer</a> let go of around 20 to 30 employees following the completion of both the recent cross-universe brawler and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Blitz-The-League-II/"><em>Blitz: The League II</em></a>.<br /><br />However, speaking in <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/features/interview-ed-boon-on-the-ups-and-downs-of-the-mortal-kombat-franchise/?biz=1&amp;page=1">an interview</a> with GameDaily, Boon asserts that the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> team specifically is still together, and is already brainstorming on what to work on next. He adds that the crew is sizing up <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC</em>'s performance, as "it will have a good amount to do with what features we put in the next game." Of course, this says nothing of those in The Windy City who worked specifically on Midway's sequel to <em>Blitz</em>, or if the company decided to have them <em>go long</em> all the way to the unemployment line.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/boon-talks-midway-layoffs-next-mortal-kombat/">Boon talks Midway layoffs, next Mortal Kombat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 14:15:00 EST. Midway plans to eviscerate PlayStation 2 owners this September, bundling together the previous three <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> titles as a single $30 box set. The compilation, dubbed the <em>Mortal Kombat: Kollection</em>, will include 3D fighters <em>Mortal Kombat: Deception</em> and <em>Mortal Kombat: Armageddon</em>, as well as the under appreciated action game, <em>Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks</em>. <br /><br />According to Midway, the set is designed to let players "refine their skills" prior to getting to clobber the Man of Steel this holiday. However, considering that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a> plays more like <em>Mortal Kombat 3</em> than any of the more recent 3D fighters, we're not exactly sure how many of those skills will actually make the transfer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/27/toasty-midway-announces-mortal-kombat-kollection-for-ps2/">Toasty! Yes, if there were anyone we could trust to revitalize this already sterling series of movies, a man with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mink">a penchant for weasels</a> and poor capitalization skills would be first on our list.<br /><br />mink mentioned that the film (which is still in pre-production) will not actually be a sequel, but instead, a "<span class="bodytextarial">re-envisioning of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom." He also promises that the film will be an "A plus plus" title to try and "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_(film)">capture the magic of the first film</a>." We're not convinced -- between Christopher Lambert's oddly effeminate portrayal of Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's frequent, impassioned delivery of "YOUR SOUL ... IS MINE," we don't think that kind of lightning is capable of striking twice.</span><a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0846480/"><br /></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/director-of-next-mortal-kombat-movie-talks-re-envisioning/">Director of next Mortal Kombat movie talks 're-envisioning'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 12:35:00 EST. During 2007, lots of companies realized that the Wii was doing good. Perhaps, too good. So, they scrambled to make games that they could port or "enhance" for the Wii, or other games that were made to take advantage of <strike>the console's </strike><span style="text-decoration: line-through;">adopters who were new to gaming and thus susceptible to spending money on crap games</span> the unique capabilities of the Wii's controls scheme, causing a slew of cash-ins on the console that didn't necessarily bring anything new to the Wii other than another game sitting on the shelf. So, let's look at those games and you tell us what the most shameless and useless game of the lot is.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/best-of-2007-worst-attempt-at-a-cash-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of 2007: Worst attempt at a cash-in</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/best-of-2007-worst-attempt-at-a-cash-in/">Best of 2007: Worst attempt at a cash-in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 18:00:00 EST. If you've ever hung out with us at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/game-night/">Game Night</a>, you probably know that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/mario-kart-ds-1/">Mario Kart DS</a> </em>is a popular choice among our readers. While we love a round of <em>Mario Kart</em> here and there, we'd probably love it even more if we were able to play it with guitars. And no, we're not talking about <em>Guitar Hero</em> controllers, but <em>real</em> guitars, as seen in the video above. Somehow, <a href="http://www.modalkombat.com/about.html">these guys</a> have created a mod that let's them control video games (in this case, the original <em>Mario Kart</em> for SNES) by the pitch of their musical instrument. Aside from the fact that the video turns really trippy halfway through with no explanation, it's a pretty cool thing to watch.<br /><br />Check after the break to see the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortalkombat/">Mortal Kombat</a> guitar battle, which is slightly more entertaining even if it doesn't involve any fatalities.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/03/guitariokart-shows-us-what-real-guitar-heroes-are-made-of/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GuitarioKart shows us what real guitar heroes are made of</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/03/guitariokart-shows-us-what-real-guitar-heroes-are-made-of/">GuitarioKart shows us what real guitar heroes are made of</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 16:40:00 EST. Facing off against Washington State, the University of California, Berkeley's Golden Bears needed to show their might, their strength, and their willingness to perform a fatality if given a chance. During their half-time show, Cal's marching band <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QNI3W8UB-s">performed a medley of video game songs</a>, complete with gaming-themed drills (i.e. the band forms a giant Triforce and Master Sword while playing music <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>). <br /> <br /> Keep an ear out for <em>Zelda, Mortal Kombat, </em>and various <em>Mario </em>tunes, among others. The Golden Bears went on to defeat Washington State 20-17, thus ending their <a href="http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=273070025&amp;confId=80">three-game losing streak</a>. As firefighters battle to control ongoing wildfires in Southern California, almost 1 million people have been forced from their homes in what <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aufnKvlM.Et8&amp;refer=home">Bloomberg</a> deems the largest evacuation in California's history. The blazes have also affected businesses, with <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=17896">GameDaily BIZ</a> reporting that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Midway/">Midway</a> employees have been asked to leave the publisher's San Diego offices (one of many spread across the world). <br /><br />In response to less sensitive gamers asking, "But what about mah gamez?!" Midway has provided assurances that its development schedules remain unaffected and that the company's <em>Mortal Kombat</em>, <em>Strangleholds and so forth </em>remain in the hands of employees dutifully tinkering at home.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/wildfires-prompt-midway-to-evacuate-san-diego-office/">Wildfires prompt Midway to evacuate San Diego office</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 22:12:00 EST. Though much of last night's hubbub was about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/midway-expects-unreal-tournament-3-to-slip-into-08/">will they/won't they delay</a> of <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em>, Midway also let a few other game releases slip in their financial report. One was an upcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MortalKombat/">Mortal Kombat</a></em>, which we already heard about, but Midway also confirmed that they were working on a new entry in the X-TrEmE football series, <em>Blitz.</em> You no doubt remember <em>Blitz </em>for its steroid juicing and the ability to send hookers to the opposing team more than for, say, the football part.<br /><br />Though we're happy for any series that helps make EA want to put an effort into <em>Madden</em>, we can't help but be bothered by something. In a world where Chad Johnson celebrates touchdowns by finding Jimmy Hoffa and shooting fireworks from his fingertips, O.J. Simpson is on a nationwide crime spree and Michael Vick <em>eats dogs whole</em>, how much more extreme does football need to be?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/midway-also-confirms-a-new-blitz-game/">Midway also confirms a new Blitz game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 10:00:00 EST. First seen in an early <em>Insecticide </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/e307-ds-insecticide-trailer-dances-before-our-eyes/">ad</a>, the technique places all game footage either on a DS screen or in a little window that is rapidly rotating and flying across the screen. For something designed to <em>show you a game,</em> they accomplish the exact opposite. In our eyes, such trailers convey a lack of confidence in the product.<br /><br />We're only running this trailer, which is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/ultimate-mortal-kombat-trailer-rips-our-heart-out-lovingly-caresses-it/"><em>second</em></a> <em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat </em>trailer in this format, because, from what we can tell, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/test-your-might-online-this-november/"><em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat</em></a> looks like a pretty faithful translation of <em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3</em>, and we are happy any time a reasonable version of a fighting game is done on a handheld. Of course, we're also pleased about the added Puzzle Kombat.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/10/ultimate-mortal.html">Game|Life</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/dont-look-directly-at-ultimate-mortal-kombat/">Don't look directly at Ultimate Mortal Kombat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 09:50:00 EST. We don't know how much stock you should put in this one, but it is <em>a lot</em> of fun to think about. TRMK.org is <a href="http://www.trmk.org/news/11082/rumor_mill_next_mortal_kombat_to_be_a_versus_title.html">reporting a rumor</a> they're working to confirm that the next <em>Mortal Kombat</em> game will include characters from the DC Universe. TRMK says that they've confirmed the VS. angle with their sources, but haven't been able to nail down the DC angle. What do we think? Well, how kind of you to ask.<br /><br />Pretty much the only info we have to go on about the next <em>MK</em> comes from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/20/boon-next-mortal-kombat-game-to-be-serious/">this interview</a> with series chief Ed Boon. He has gone on record as saying the next in the series would be more "serious", which wouldn't seem to fit the men-in-tights vibe. But he's also said that will be a very different sort of <em>MK.</em> So we guess that makes it a wash on the probability scale. For our part, we can't stop wondering if we'll finally get to see Noob Saibot fighting Mister Mxyzptlk in the reverse linguistics battle of the century. ... There are probably quite a few things that <em>can</em> prepare you for this. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Midway/">Midway</a> has announced a pint-sized punch-a-thon in <em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat</em>, slated to hit, kick and likely do something completely uncalled for to the Nintendo DS in November. The game will offer the traditional fighting and fatalities of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortalkombat"><em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3</em></a> (currently available on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a>) along with the block-dropping <em>Puzzle Kombat</em> mode, as seen in <em>Mortal Kombat: Deception</em>.<br /><br />Nintendo Wi-Fi multiplayer is also supported by the title -- just remember to exchange friend codes before exchanging blows.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ultimate-mortal-kombat-ds/">Ultimate Mortal Kombat (DS)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ultimate-mortal-kombat-ds/#291510"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/mkds_gmply_fatality_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ultimate-mortal-kombat-ds/#291509"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/mkds_gmply_pk2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ultimate-mortal-kombat-ds/#291508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/mkds_gmply_umk_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ultimate-mortal-kombat-ds/#291507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/mkds_psel_umk2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/ultimate-mortal-kombat-bloodies-up-nintendo-ds-this-november/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat bloodies up Nintendo DS this November</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/ultimate-mortal-kombat-bloodies-up-nintendo-ds-this-november/">Ultimate Mortal Kombat bloodies up Nintendo DS this November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 11:13:00 EST. We haven't been this excited about <em>Mortal Kombat </em>since the first time <em>Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3</em> came out, and we've never had any reason to be excited about a portable <em>Kombat.</em> But this is just too cool. <em>Mortal Kombat</em> co-creator Ed Boon told IGN that a version of the classic fighting game will be coming to the DS-- with <em>online play.</em> Attention, developers: this is how you do a port on the DS.<br /><br />It'll also include <a href="http://deception.davesmk.com/puzzle/"><em>Puzzle Kombat</em></a>, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Puzzle_Fighter_II_Turbo"><em>Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo</em></a> clone found in <a href="http://www.mkdeception.com/"><em>Mortal Kombat Deception</em></a>, which will also be playable online. The game will be out in November, and we look forward to eviscerating all of you at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/game-night">Game Night</a>.<br /><br />In the game, we mean. We aren't planning to come to your houses and eviscerate any of you. We wouldn't even know how.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/test-your-might-online-this-november/">Test your might online this November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 09:50:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com//tag/achievements101">X3F Achievements 101</a> is back, and on its regularly scheduled time slot of Sundays. Initial response to our first edition was rather positive, so we're glad you like the concept and hope you enjoy reading, and even participating in the column. Emails with Achievement tips also came in at a good pace, and I look forward to playing and trading with you. One particular email stood out, which came from Casey over at <a href="http://www.brains-n-brawn.com/">brains-N-brawn.com</a>, and the steps he took to get Achievements in one of the most time consuming Arcade games, <em>Bejeweled 2</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/x3f-achievements-101-bots-bosses-and-babalities/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/x3f-achievements-101-bots-bosses-and-babalities/">X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 01:30:00 EST. As well as a couple of trailers for upcoming PS3 games, Sony gave us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortalkombat"><em>Mortal Kombat 2</em></a>. The full release list is as follows.<br />

Isn't it is nice to finally get some playable content with a name that doesn't start with "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/european-psn-releases-for-june-1st/">Go!</a>"? <em>MK2</em> is a worthwhile purchase, especially considering the low price. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/metareview-our-take-mortal-kombat-ii/">reviewed it</a> in May (back when the Americans got it), giving it a score of nothing-to-write-home-about out of ten. Things can only get better for the PSN though, with upcoming releases of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callingallcars"><em>Calling All Cars</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/superstardusthd">Super Stardust HD</a>. </em>Will removing the spines of our friends over the internet keep us occupied until then? We hope so.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/09/european-psn-releases-for-june-8th/">European PSN releases for June 8th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Jun 2007 20:30:00 EST. <div align="left">What's more <em><a href="http://www.adultswim.com/shows/metal/">brutal</a> </em>than seeing gruesome fatalities performed before your eyes, while blood and bone spill all around and the hopeless fake cries of voice actors echo in your head? <em>A list of moves in the PDF format.</em> Those with weak stomachs should look away from the <em>rawness.</em><br /></div>

<br />While this isn't as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ipbdxiJU2k"><em>MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAT</em></a> as, say, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/new-mortal-kombat-armageddon-screens/">screenshots</a> or video would be, we admit that we were pretty curious about how the moves in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortalkombat"><em>Mortal Kombat Armageddon</em></a> were going to be pulled off (not curious enough to <em>buy it, </em>but certainly curious enough to read a thing on the Internet.) We knew waggling would be involved, but it's cool to learn what the specific waggles will be.<br /><br />This totally reminds us of downloading <em>Mortal Kombat</em> FAQs from Compuserve and leaving them to print from our dot-matrix printer overnight. Sometimes we'd wake up in the morning only to find that our pet dinosaur had shredded all the pages, forcing us to start over.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/totally-visceral-presentation-of-mortal-kombat-fatalities/">Totally visceral presentation of Mortal Kombat fatalities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 17:30:00 EST. While we're not sold on using the Wiimote for traditional fighting games -- and neither is Midway, you can play the newly released <em>Mortal Kombat: Armageddon</em> with the classic controller or GameCube controller -- the mere thought of Wiimote-enabled fatalities has us all <strike>bloodthirsty</strike> giddy with curiosity. This week, we have a <em>list</em> of Wii releases -- an actual <em>list</em>, which means <em>more than one title</em>. Brilliant! At least, it seems that way until we head out to the shops and peer into our wallets, which immediately shrivel in the face of the<em> epic</em> list of games we want to buy. But we're greedy like that. <br /><br />So what's it for you this week? Will you bear the brunt of multiple game purchases? Are you going to wait awhile before making any decisions?<br />

Sony has announced that tonight they are releasing the SOE remake of the arcade classic, <em>Rampage World Tour</em>, through the North American PLAYSTATION Store. Priced at the standard rate of a mere $4.99, the downloadable title allows you to play as any of the three classic <em>Rampage </em>characters as you tear down skyscapers and generally terrorize the city. The game also offers multiplayer action for up to three people, online or local - no word on if it supports voice chat though.<br /><br />I'm pretty stoked about this title myself. I liked <em>Mortal Kombat II</em> a lot, but <em>Gauntlet II </em>was kind of lacking in the fun department. <em>Rampage </em>looks solid though, graphics held up surprisingly well and something about the simple, destructive nature of the gameplay of the original always entertained me.<br /><br />[Via Press Release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/rampage-world-tour-tears-up-the-ps3-tonight/">Rampage World Tour tears up the PS3 tonight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 May 2007 15:30:00 EST. We're following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kombat"><em>Mortal Kombat Armageddon</em></a> with interest, just because of the waggle. We are <em>very</em> curious about trying a waggle-fortified fighting game.<br /><br />One thing is certain from these screens: Nintendo is <em>definitely</em> not insisting on replacing the blood in this game with viscous grey sweat. Unless they're saying that in the Outworld, people sweat red-- by the gallon, out of gaping neck wounds. We've posted a gallery containing new screens-- FINISH THEM! This is despite previous versions of the game having online play (on PlayStation 2 and Xbox One) and despite the <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/03/21/mortal-kombat-gets-previewed-offers-video-as-well/">developer's wishes</a> to include online play.<br /><br />The reason, as Himmerick explains in an interview with Advanced Media Network, was not a technology issue but that "Nintendo didn't have their online system ready for us when we would have needed to implement it," he said. Himmerick said they instead focused on improving the single player aspect: creating an Endurance mode, including a new character and fine tuning the Wii remote controls.<br /><br />The news comes as further anecdotal evidence that Nintendo is not letting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/25/no-online-support-for-3rd-party-wii-devs-until-2007/">third-party</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/05/no-online-capabilities-for-3rd-party-wii-games-in-2007-says-s/">developers</a> put online in their gameplay. <em>Mortal Kombat: Armageddon</em>, takes out its aggression on the Wii on May 29.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/05/09/mortal-kombat-performs-fatality-on-wi-fi-functionality/">Nintendo Wii Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/mortal-kombat-for-wii-has-no-online-gameplay/">Mortal Kombat Wii lacks online mode, developer blames Nintendo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 May 2007 19:25:00 EST. And toss it in a trunk, lock it shut with chains and padlocks, finally tossing it into the Atlantic ocean. It just <a href="http://wii.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=9696">isn't</a> happening, as the game's producer Shaun Himmerick revealed to AMN in a quick Q &amp; A session. This, of course, is quite sad, considering that some folks working on the game actually <em>wanted</em> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/21/mortal-kombat-gets-previewed-offers-video-as-well/">include</a> online functionality.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/09/mortal-kombat-performs-fatality-on-wi-fi-functionality/">Mortal Kombat performs fatality on Wi-Fi functionality</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2007 14:15:00 EST. Before we get into our impressions, we'll do as we always do and cite the big-name review sites. Their scores for this game were surprising. There aren't too many reviews on the game, though. Without further ado, here are some of the scores given to <em>MKII</em>. <br /><br />
<ul>
    <li>IGN: 7.3 / 10</li>
    <li>GameSpot: 7.9 / 10</li>
</ul>
<br />What we noticed in these reviews is that the reviewers didn't actually review the title as what it is, rather, as what it was. "Oh, this game was great in 1993!" were slapped over both reviews, listing what the game offered <em>back then</em> and how it still does all those things. What our impressions were entailed how that doesn't matter two kicks of the donkey -- the game as it is now really sucks. Read on to listen to our reasoning, or just flame away for no reason now.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/metareview-our-take-mortal-kombat-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metareview + Our Take: Mortal Kombat II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/metareview-our-take-mortal-kombat-ii/">Metareview + Our Take: Mortal Kombat II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. We'll be reviewing that title this weekend and here's a teaser -- we aren't pleased. Sales for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Midway/">Midway</a> this first quarter were a reported $11.1 million, down from the previous quarter's $15.4 million. Their net loss is teetering on $19.8 million, which is better than last year and better than anticipated. Most of Midway's killer titles are due out later this year.<br /><br />CEO David Zucker was pleased, saying the company's performance "exceeded our expectations during the first quarter primarily due to the continuing sales of our holiday 2006 releases and other catalog titles." Heck, those random-number-generating analysts snidely remarked that Midway would only see $8 million in sales by the end of the first quarter.<br /><br />Still, Midway isn't making that many games -- they're creating a few new titles on the PSP and DS, but the Wii will be getting a remake of <em>MK: Armageddon</em>, the 360 will snag <em>Hour of Victory</em>, and continued sales of <em>Lord of the Rings Online</em> will probably bear the brunt of sales for the rest of the year. We'd like to see more from these guys on the PS3 -- maybe a new IP. We'll keep you posted if anyone gets talked up, but for now, we'll just continue to shrug at these numbers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/midway-reports-11-million-sales-19-million-loss/">Midway reports $11 million sales, $19 million loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 May 2007 23:30:00 EST. A couple of years ago, a group of students released a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cv/tags/fighting/">set of images</a> depicting a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/25/street-fighter-ii-on-xbla-dated-for-july-30/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Street Fighter</span></a>/<span style="font-style: italic;">Mortal Kombat</span>-esque fight sequence in front of a chalkboard. Now the team has released a stop-motion video utilizing over 3,000 photos and several hours of post-production effects. No chalk this time around, but the video game-meets-<span style="font-style: italic;">Dragonball Z</span>-meets-real life theme is all there. Check out the video after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.insertcredit.com/">Insert Credit</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/chalkboard-fighters-return-with-stop-motion-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chalkboard fighters return with stop-motion video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/chalkboard-fighters-return-with-stop-motion-video/">Chalkboard fighters return with stop-motion video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 10:03:00 EST. A terrible Real World special. That's what. After <em>Armageddon</em>, <em>MK</em> creator <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=162372">Ed Boon said the next title in the franchise will be more realistic-looking</a> and "<span class="text_article_body">not going to be like jokes." Indeed. It'll be an edgier move, grittier, dirtier. Darker? Whatever they plan, they're planning from scratch. Other than the idea of it being a fighting game, anything after that is open for consideration. No kart-racing, please.<br /><br />Boon added this about the upcoming (read: end of 2008) game: "</span><span class="text_article_body">We're not putting any restrictions like we HAVE to keep weapons or we HAVE to keep fighting styles and stuff like that... we're going to... try to introduce as many new characters as possible, new features, new stuff like that and take advantage of the amazing presentation, graphics that all of a sudden you can do, things that are a lot more real." New characters are always welcome, really. As far as features go, Boon and his Boonies (teehee, it's like Goonies) will try to incorporate the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SIXAXIS">SIXAXIS</a> controls in there and use the next-gen consoles as fully as possible. We look forward to seeing what gets revealed... next year.<br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/mortal-kombat-wants-to-get-real-serious/">Mortal Kombat wants to get "real serious"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 18:15:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=ed+boon">Ed Boon</a> is done joking around with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortalkombat"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a>. We don't know what that means, but he seems so serious about it, we can't help but be a little intimidated. He put on his business face in an <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=162372">interview with CVG</a> about the next game in the series, saying "<span class="text_article_body">we're not going to joke around in this one, it's not going to be like jokes." Does this mean we can't expect <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babalities">Babalities</a>? No more <a href="http://jaredr.vox.com/library/post/johnny-cage-is-my-co-pilot.html">Johnny Cage crotch shots</a>?<br /><br />Boon goes on to expand on his vision for the new, more mature <em>MK</em>, (or will it be <em>MC?)</em> calling it more realistic and grittier, with the designers feeling no obligation to bring back favorite fighting styles or weapons. He stops short of saying he'll bench favorite characters, presumably to stem the tide of "If joo dont bring bak ScOrPiOn ILL cut your brak lines" emails that are probably just making love to "GrEEdo didnt shoote 1st dumba$$" emails somewhere just waiting for their moment to strike. Boon said the title probably won't be available until the end of 2008, and we're (pun incoming!) <em>seriously</em> excited to see this brave new world of spine removal. </span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/20/boon-next-mortal-kombat-game-to-be-serious/">Boon: Next Mortal Kombat game to be "serious"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 14:56:00 EST. To make up for it, here is a fabulous joke that is guaranteed to mortify your opponents online.<br /><em><br />What is Liu Kang's favorite drink?<br /><br />...<br /><br />WATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!</em><br /><br />Hilarious. Regardless, the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> series could stand a serious reboot. Especially after the previous game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/13/mortal-kombat-armageddon-to-feature-every-kombatant-ever/"><em>Armageddon</em></a>, featured a dead Johnny Cage split-punching every known kombatant ever in the crotch.<br /><br />Should the <a href="http://www.moviehole.net/news/20070328_mortal_kombat_movie_series_reb.html">new film</a> ever make it to theaters, director Christopher Mink says it will be a retelling of the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> universe, a la <em>Batman Begins</em>. This would also fall in line with <em>MK</em> co-creator Ed Boon's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/05/mortal-kombat-8-inspired-by-gears-of-war-using-unreal-engine-3/">vision</a> of a completely redone fighting game for the eighth sequel in the series. With scripts being thrown in and out of Threshold, Midway and another, unknown studio, progress is still being made albeit slowly.<br /><br />In other Oscar worthy news, Mink told IMDB readers that he has met with former <em>Mortal Kombat </em>stars Robin Shou and Christopher Lambert. It was better than good, it was <em>fun</em>. And what exactly makes this game so fun? Well, we're glad to report it's the controls. <br /><br />What's odd about this piece, however, is the report that the folks developing this MK title wanted to include online functionality. What's even more odd though is that the reason given for not including the functionality is Nintendo hasn't given them any online-capable <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/devkit">dev kits</a> yet. This goes against the reports of third-party devs <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/12/it-begins-developers-starting-to-get-online-dev-kits/">already receiving</a> these.<br /><br />This doesn't make much sense to us, to tell the truth, even if Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon"><em>Pokemon Battle Revolution</em></a> is to kick off the Wi-Fi gameplay on the console. That doesn't mean the developers can't implement the code and just force those who have purchased the game to wait until <em>after Pokemon</em> before turning the Wi-Fi on, right?<br /><br /><font color="red">Update:</font> Whoops, we got our dates mixed up. <em>MK</em> releases <em>before Pokemon Battle Revolution</em>, explaining why they can't implement online play. We know the series isn't <em>that old, </em>and, in fact, still exists. But, for example, we can't help but reference the old "PREPARE YOURSELF" slogan from the <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/column_game_ads_agogo/">1993 print ads</a> when we're talking about any <em>MK </em>game. We miss the old games, and it took the new one to put us in that state.<br /><br />Looking at the big, empty environments of the new Wii version of <em>Mortal Kombat Armageddon</em> makes us long for the detail-filled stages of the old games, and the sort-of-plain character models remind us of how amusingly hokey the digitized sprites used to be. Those were the days, when we didn't need <em>fancy polygons</em> to enjoy virtually ripping some dude's spine out. We had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Goro_Mortal_Kombat.PNG">Claymation bosses</a> and we liked it. It was a simpler time-- a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Forden">TOASTY!!</a> time.<br /><br />Screens, with obligatory Wii-gesture diagrams, after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/18/prepare-yourself-for-new-mortal-kombat-armageddon-screens/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PREPARE YOURSELF for new Mortal Kombat Armageddon screens</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/18/prepare-yourself-for-new-mortal-kombat-armageddon-screens/">PREPARE YOURSELF for new Mortal Kombat Armageddon screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Feb 2007 21:31:00 EST. Boon realized that UE3 would be perfect for the next <em>Mortal Kombat</em> after playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gow"><em>Gears of War</em></a>. "To me, when I saw <em>Gears of War</em>, I was like, 'Holy shit! That's the look that we've been talking about" (last we checked, the look you were talking about was people leaving behind 8 rib cages and 12 femurs when they explode). Beyond visual aesthetics, Boon states that his team will be throwing out all the recent iterations of <em>MK</em> and starting again from the ground up. Boon promises a new control scheme and play style. The changeable fighting stances, for instance, will not be returning.<br /><br />We're excited by the prospects of new <em>Mortal Kombat</em>. The last time Boon and company rebuilt <em>Mortal Kombat</em>, the series received a much needed kick in the pants. Here's hoping the newly redesigned version will become a similarly fresh experience. Don't get too excited though, the game isn't expected to ship until 2008.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/05/mortal-kombat-8-inspired-by-gears-of-war-using-unreal-engine-3/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/06/mk8-gets-new-spine-unreal-engine-3/">MK8 gets new spine: Unreal Engine 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 10:30:00 EST. Visually, that's what we want to do," explained Boon.<em> Visually</em>.<br /><em><br />MK8</em> is still a fighter at heart, and Boon and the team hope that by starting from scratch, <em>Mortal Kombat</em> can inspire the genre as it did more than a decade ago. "We're not going to have three fighting styles, we're not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme. Everything is getting trashed. We're reinventing everything from the ground up," promised Boon. Don't expect any solid details for some time; Boon admitted that <em>MK8</em> is currently not in a playable state, supposing that its release won't come until the end of 2008.<br /><br />While Boon hinted at the possibility of <em>MK8</em> on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, it should be noted that Epic's Mark Rein recently told <a href="http://www.wired.com/news/culture/games/0,72616-0.html?tw=rss.index" target="_blank">Wired</a> that "it's not in [Epic's] plans to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. It's really designed for next-gen, high-definition." <em>Oh snap!</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/05/mortal-kombat-8-inspired-by-gears-of-war-using-unreal-engine-3/">Mortal Kombat 8 inspired by Gears of War, using Unreal Engine 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Feb 2007 23:25:00 EST. Square Enix is bringing their big franchises to the handheld. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/31/mortal-kombat-coming-to-the-ds/"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> will be making an appearance. <em>Katamari Damacy</em>, however, rolled on by. Boon discusses just when development on the Wii installment in the franchise began, as well as some of the tweaks the game was subjected to in transitioning over to Nintendo's motion-sensitive system. <br /><br />Ed goes on to discuss specifics in the motion-sensitive system, saying he "felt there would be no point in doing this game for the Wii if we did not support the Wii-mote for all modes and features. We didn't want to just support it, though--we wanted to utilize it and customize the gameplay experience. When you play it, you will notice that every single super move in the game is controlled by a Wii gesture system; also, the fatality systems will use the gesture system. For example, to do a move like throw Scorpion's spear, you will swing the Wii-mote away from your enemy and then bring it back toward your enemy, as if you are throwing the spear yourself toward the enemy, in an "away-toward" motion." Sounds good to us, bring on the <em>Kombat</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/23/ed-boon-no-online-gameplay/">Ed Boon: no online gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Jan 2007 15:30:00 EST. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, <span style="font-style: italic;">Donkey Kong</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Zelda</span>. So what's Nintendo's secret?<br /><br />Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/nintendo-holds-key-to-franchise-longevity-profitability/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/10/nintendo-holds-key-to-franchise-longevity-profitability/">Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 18:23:00 EST.
