PlayStation Plus deals: Dungeon Defenders, Sonic 1 and 2 for free, Sega discounts

This week may play host to the big debut of PlayStation Plus on Vita, but a smattering of other deals also await subscribers. The free game this week is Dungeon Defenders, the tower-defense online co-op RPG hybrid from Trendy Entertainment. The Classic Sonic bundle, which pairs Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is also gratis to all PS Plus members this week.

Deals come from Sega's staple of games too, the PlayStation Blog reports, with discounts on Nights Into Dreams HD, Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and even a bundle on Hell Yeah and two supplementary DLC packs on the docket. And if you got into the PS Plus membership for the non-gaming stuff (sure, we totally get it) then an 80% discount on one year of Music Unlimited Premium may entice your earbuds.

PSA: Sony's Music Unlimited service now on Vita

Sony's subscription music streaming service, Music Unlimited, is now available on the Vita. The app touts a touch-navigated menu system and the ability to listen to music offline, which is a first for the service, but is otherwise unchanged from its various other iterations across Sony devices. There's still two levels of service at $3.99 and $9.99 monthly, with cross-platform "Music Sync" technology that keeps your various Sony devices pumpin' the same jams.

We'd love to have been a fly on the wall during the Music Unlimited naming meeting at Sony HQ: "We need a name that communicates the fact that our service provides people with music. But, like, a lot of music. There's so much music in our service, you guys."

"What about The Infinite Blackness of the Void of Horrible Space, With Music[TM]?"

"Johnson, you're fired. Turn in your unlimited coffee voucher on your way -- Johnson you're a genius."

Music Unlimited available day one on PlayStation Vita, PlayMemories Studio confirmed

Sony's cloud-based music service, the aptly titled Music Unlimited, has been destined for the PlayStation Vita since before it was called a PlayStation Vita. Today, Kaz Hirai revealed during Sony's annual CES keynote that the service would be available on day one for PlayStation Vita users.

Also of significance to the Sony product owners of the US is the confirmation of PlayMemories Studio, the leaked editing application first seen this past weekend. It will allow users to manipulate photos and videos directly through the PS3.

Sony offering six months of Qriocity to PS3 owners

Were you perplexed by the odd, seemingly misspelled word that kept periodically popping up during Sony's updates about the PSN outage? You know, Qriocity? It seems Sony is attempting to take advantage of your piqued attention, as PlayStation Blog has announced that all PS3 owners ages 18 and up are eligible to receive a free 180-day membership to the streaming music service.

To access the offer, PS3 owners simply need to select the "Music Unlimited" option under the Music pane of the XMB. After that, it's just a matter of figuring out which of the seven million tracks therein you want to listen to first. No, seriously, it's an important decision. If you kick off your Qriocity career with Hoobastank, we're going to be very disappointed in you.

Qriocity music streaming app on PSP today

It's now possible to access Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity anywhere you can get a Wi-Fi signal. The PSP can now use the streaming music service, which offers "more than seven million songs" to paying users, with two tiers of playlist customization.

Sony announced this morning that the PSP app is now available in "UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia and New Zealand." Today is also the planned release date for the US. If you'd like to try Qriocity, Sony is offering 30-day trials to PSN members here.

Music Unlimited platform coming to PSP, NGP and Xperia Play

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, COO of Sony Network Entertainment Shawn Layden confirmed that the company's Music Unlimited platform would soon make its way to PSP owners living in the UK in "a matter of weeks," and would appear on the NGP and Xperia Play later this year. The cloud-based music streaming service (which kicked off in the U.S. this year as part of the PS3's Qriocity application) will let listeners access their music and genre channels set up on a PC or PS3 on-the-go -- for a monthly fee, of course. We've contacted Sony to see if this info applies to the States as well.

Layden explained the inspiration came from the PSP and PS3's ability to share games between one another, adding that Sony hopes to, "bring all those different content domains into a more comprehensive space for the user." Hey, we're all about synergy, here. We just hope Sony finds a way to add Qriocity support to our most anticipated NGP launch title, Now That's How I Touch Music: Vol. 6.

PS3 'Qriocity' music service available in US today

If you're, um, qrious about what it would be like to stream music through your PS3, you're in ~~luq~~ luck. Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity, the cloud-based music service released in parts of Europe late last year, is available in the US today. Music Unlimited allows you to stream "more than six million music tracks from major recording labels, leading independent labels and major publishers around the world."

There are two options: a "Basic" service and a "Premium" service. Both offer commercial-free music and multiple genre-based channels, but "Premium" offers more channels and the ability to listen to specific songs on demand.

The service will be available for PS3, Bravia TVs, Blu-Ray players, and VAIO PCs "later this afternoon," with versions for other devices including PSP coming soon. If you somehow don't have enough ways to listen to streaming music, or aren't satisfied with the short name of your existing service, check out the preview video after the break and see if Qriosity is for you.

PS3, PSP get Music Unlimited service in UK, Ireland

Sony's cloud-based, digital music service, "Music Unlimited" ("powered by Qriocity"), is now available in the UK and Ireland. Similar to Microsoft's Zune Pass, the service is also coming to the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand at some point in 2011. Two available plans are charged monthly, with the "Basic" service being £3.99 in the UK and €3.99 in Ireland; and the "Premium" service £9.99 and €9.99, respectively. The basic service is like radio, with preset playlists, but users can skip songs at will, while the premium option offers customizable lists and "premium Top 100 channels which are regularly updated with the latest hits."

Music Unlimited's current catalog is approximately 6 million songs deep, with tracks from leading indie labels, as well as corporate behemoths like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music. The service will be available on a wide range of Sony devices, including PS3, PSP and "Android-based mobile devices."

PSP firmware update 6.35 prepares America for Qriocity, adds x-Radar to XMB in Japan

Back in September, Sony revealed plans for a music service called "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity." Today, the company has announced details for upcoming firmware update 6.35, which prepares the PSP for the music streaming service by adding an icon under the Music section of the XMB. So don't get all freaked out when you see it and think it's been stealth-launched or anything. On the PlayStation blog, Sony VP Eric Lempel says the new firmware is "coming soon."

In Japan, PSP users can now take advantage of some built-in mapping software without having to go through the PlayStation Store and download the app x-Radar. As part of firmware 6.35 released overseas today, Andriasang says the app's now moved to the XMB, utilizing maps and guides purchased through the PlayStation Store to provide users with different types of data. Music Unlimited coming to PS3 and PSP by year's end

Looks like rumors do come true -- some sooner than others. Sony has announced a new program for a variety of its devices, including PS3 and PSP, called "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity." According to the announcement, it is a new "cloud-based digital music service" to be available by year's end -- well, at least for Europe (where the announcement took place). With Music Unlimited, subscribers will be able to access "millions of songs." Further details will be announced in the future, but right now, Sony's service sounds strikingly similar to Microsoft's own Zune Pass.

In addition to PlayStation products, the service will be compatible with Bravia TVs, Blu-ray disc players, home theater systems, and VAIO computers "with one single account and without the need to manage digital files." Looks like Sony's come a long way from the ATRAC days!
