On top of the Day 1 Digital promotion, PSN users can pre-order Assassin's Creed 3 and snag a pair of Sega PSN games today: Sonic Adventure 2 and NiGHTS into DREAMS. More PSOne Classics are available on PS Vita today, including several Square Enix and Capcom games like Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil 2 and many more. Finally, a Silent Hill: Book of Memories demo is available for PS Vita owners.

During a "Summer of Sonic" event over the weekend, Sega showed footage of NiGHTS and Reala (as vehicles) in the upcoming racer.

The dreamy flight game will also be represented in track form, with Spring Valley shown as a prototype, and another track based on Nightmare is in progress at developer Sumo Digital. It's nice to see NiGHTS come back into prominence, even if he has somehow transformed into a car along the way.

Everyone's favorite surreal flying game for Sega Saturn, "NiGHTS into dreams...." is getting an HD rebirth "this fall" from Sega. Planned for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC, NiGHTS is an HD update of the original Sega Saturn release from 1996. Not that you weren't expecting one, of course.

Beyond the beautified graphics, Sega's adding a 16:9 aspect ratio, leaderboards, Achievements/Trophies, and "an optional Saturn Mode" (which reverts the game back to 1996 graphics). No release date is given just yet beyond the amorphous "fall," but there is the snazzy new trailer above. And these screens below. And hey, if you can't wait, you could always go play the game right now on your Saturn.

Update: We asked Sega whether the Christmas NiGHTS content would be part of the HD re-release, and were told, "Can't confirm anything about that yet." We have to keep an eye out in "the coming weeks," as Sega has "a lot of stuff in the air right now for this year."

The publisher announced two more playable characters today (well, four, actually, in pairs): Virtua Fighter's Akira and Jacky, and Bonanza Bros.' Mobo and Robo. The Virtua guys appear to be riding in a red Ferrari, which would add the OutRun franchise to the list as well. All these reveals are in line with the character portraits found hidden on the website.

NiGHTS will appear in the game as well, though not in a capacity that will cause superfans "DiGi" and "Trippy" to lose their bets and burn their NiGHTS memorabilia collections. The androgynous dream-monster will appear as the flagman in the racing game.

Okay, this is all pretty tenuous, but super interesting: apparently, a Sega of Europe employee kept a blog last year in which he revealed some stuff about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams that he shouldn't have, well before the game's release. The posts have since been removed, but the Wayback Machine allows us to have a look back!

According to the blog post, Journey of Dreams was originally developed as an Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 title, and was hastily shunted to the Wii when the platform's success became obvious -- despite protests from director Takashi Iizuka. The 360 version was at least far enough along to be playable! The quick change in plans meant that NiGHTS' development time was effectively shortened. If you didn't like the game, you have something on which to blame the problems!

Also interesting, if this blog post is really as vintage as it looks (we don't discount some kind of Internet trickery): the blogger dropped a pretty big hint about a future Sega game, saying that Sonic Team should be freed from Sonic games, "... before they release another Sonic game with a transforming Evil 'Night' Sonic who looks like a werewolf and can stretch his arms out Dhalsim-style. It will happen, mark my words."

Ahh, Christmastime. Every year, we look forward to cherished traditions such as fighting traffic, stressing out over finding gifts, and even the occasional Black Friday trampling. Yet one would be surprised to learn that December 25th has a history which shares very little with frivolous lawsuits and Bill O'Reilly frothing at the mouth.

Indeed, aside from its litigatious and hostile depiction on the news, Christmas is largely an excuse to shower our loved ones with food, presents, and joy. It's also an easy inspiration for a stressed columnist trying to finish his Christmas shopping to create a Top 5 list. As such examples of religious-based holidays are rare in gaming, this list will not be Nintendo-specific. For those who celebrate the date, I wish you a Merry Christmas. For those who don't, I wish you well just the same.

Amazon has dropped the price of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams even further, from a tempting $20.99 to a tantalizing $16.88. At that price, it's almost irresistible! We know this because we are currently almost failing to resist it. Amazon's price for new copies has finally dipped down just below Gamefly's price for used copies, and, as with Gamefly, free shipping is available.

The rapidly-falling price for what was supposed to be the triumphant return of a beloved franchise doesn't really bode well for the future. We shouldn't look forward to a localized version of the PS2 NiGHTS into Dreams remake, for one thing. Or anything that doesn't star Sonic and about a billion other anthropomorphic jerks.

Amazon is now offering Super Smash Bros. Brawl at a reduced price of $40. We doubt this markdown is permanent (since demand is still awesomely high) but we don't know how long the new sale price will last.

Brawl for $40 may indeed be awesome, but it gets better! The $10 gift card offer we mentioned last week is still in effect, bringing the price down to (basically) $30. That's as cheap as you're likely to see it -- until the next unexpected markdown, which will probably be next week (judging from recent history). Oh, and while you're shopping at Amazon, why not throw a $20 copy of NiGHTS in?

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is now marked down to $20.09 at the online retailer, which is a hard-to-resist price for an unused copy of Sega's game. Although it didn't get the best reviews, twenty dollars isn't a lot to ask when it comes to reliving a beloved franchise.

NiGHTS Community, a site for obsessive NiGHTS fans, came into possession of some rare Journey of Dreams memorabilia earlier this year when Sega gave the administrator a private demo of the game (!) Instead of hoarding it forever or selling it on eBay, the site has decided to give it away in a contest. And the prizes are all being given away individually instead of as a giant pile, so you have half a chance.

You could win a PAL copy of NiGHTS or much more interesting (but less playable) stuff, such as a glow-in-the-dark sticker sheet, a Japanese promotional poster, or a two-track soundtrack sampler which apparently was never made available outside of Sega of Europe! For an indeterminate period, Gamefly has marked the price of used copies of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams down to $22.99. If you were ever curious about trying out Sega's flying adventure, now seems like as good a time as any!

Unlike the sticker-marred, printed-instructions-bundled nightmare of buying rentals from Blockbuster or a local video store (as someone who spent hours at a previous job cleaning rental sticker residue off of NES cartridges: thanks, local video stores) buying from Gamefly is surprisingly okay. You get the original case and instructions in perfect condition, since Gamefly files them away immediately upon receiving their copies, and the discs are guaranteed.

According to Wiiz, Sega has officially dropped the European MSRP of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams to €30. We haven't found the statement from Sega, but Amazon.fr reflects this price. The UK price has also fallen to around £30, but, of course, while these amounts look the same, they represent different costs. To put it bluntly, the price is still way out of hand for the UK. A Freeloader and an American copy of NiGHTS would come out to the same price, plus you'd have a Freeloader.

This follows a similar price drop last week in the U.S. So even though the prices are still different across regions, they're all lower within those regions than they were before.

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams was one of the most important Wii games of 2007 -- for Sega nerds. For most gamers, it was "that game about the jester thing or whatever, right? I think I saw it on the shelf when I went to buy Super Mario Galaxy." Even with the prestige that comes with being the continuation of a beloved classic, many Wii platform-game fans were spending their money elsewhere last holiday season, and may have missed out on NiGHTS. Now might be the time to pick it up!

Gamestop has just lightened the game's price by $20, putting it at a very reasonable $29.99. You can buy the game and start saving up for some NiGHTS stuff!

Play-Asia has just started their "Easter Egg" sale, which is actually a sale on video games (though Play-Asia may sell you an egg if you ask). Most of the things they sell (released more than 30 days ago) are 20% off. The Freeloader isn't included, but lots of import games to play using the Freeloader are. While there's (currently) no Christmas-related expansion like there was on the Saturn, Sonic Team still managed to sneak some seasonal content into NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. No doubt some of you have figured this out already, as holidays have happened since the game's release. But new NiGHTS players or those who don't mess around in the "My Dream" mode won't have seen any of it yet!

There's a special celebration of some kind in My Dream every single month. The Nightopians shoot fireworks all day on New Year's Day. In July, they don bullfighting gear for the Running of the Bulls. You can access this content in the manner of a cheating jerk by disconnecting from the Internet and changing the system's date, or you can wait like a decent human being.

People seem to be pretty divided so far on NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The critics tended to score it in the safe seventies, while some of our own commenters had similarly mixed feelings about the title. One thing looks pretty certain, however: if Journey of Dreams director Takashi Iizuka has his way, any future follow-ups to the follow-up will be soaring gracefully to the Wii.

Speaking to German site G-Wie-Gorilla, Iizuka described the console as "a good choice" for the game, before promising that future games in the series would appear on Nintendo's platform. Naturally, that still doesn't quash our supreme disappointment over the PlayStation 2 getting the original NiGHTS into Dreams, but we could certainly cope with a sequel to Journey of Dreams that resolves some of the niggles.

Fed up with his poor performance in NiGHTS, NeoGAFfer MobiusPigeon set out to remove the octagonal gate from his Nunchuk, allowing him full, unencumbered 360-degree rotation. Using a cone-shaped grinding stone on a drill, he bored out the joystick hole until it was circular. He reported an improvement in personal NiGHTS performance "from Ds and Es to (A's)" immediately after implementing this mod.

It came up in the thread that, while you've got the Nunchuk open, you could actually swap out the Nunchuk's joystick with a larger GameCube stick, for an even more comfortable experience. Also, all of these mods would work with a Classic Controller, as well.

We know where we'll be after Christmas this year: hitting up used game shops looking for spare parts. We're hoping to find some pre-thrown-away defective Cube controllers from which to mine joysticks.

The release of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams this week is something we, as well as most of you, have been waiting on for awhile now. It's finally hit shelves and the reviewers have found the game has potential, but isn't as groundbreaking as the title that spawned it. Some of you have picked it up and found it to be good, though. Remember how everyone was excited about the idea of a new NiGHTS game just a half year ago? Well, let's go back to that happy place for one second before reality crashes down around us. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams ended up as we feared following our hands-on at Tokyo Games Show. From reading various reviews there's a lot of pity inflation in the scores stemming from reviewer's happy childhood memories. The great return of a beloved franchise NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is not, but maybe another sequel will get it right -- you know, if people actually buy this third-party Wii title.
  • Games Radar (80/100): "NiGHTS really soars when it's in the air, maintaining the essence of the original game. Some of the crappier additions send it into a bit of a nose dive, but overall the game rights itself with its bold originality and a unique charm that's unlike anything else out there."
  • 1UP (70/100): "For serious NiGHTS fans, Journey offers a bittersweet reunion that reminds us of what was so singularly special about Sega's airborne dreamweaver. Unfortunately, attempting to evolve the formula creates a host of new problems and issues that ultimately diminish the game's overall appeal. That said, this still represents one of the finest original third-party games available for Wii, and younger players will find a lot to love in this gameplay-rich adventure."
  • IGN (65/100): "So after waiting over a decade for a new NiGHTS experience, what's the final verdict? Personally, we'd rather have seen this one stay a nostalgic piece of gaming history, as Journey of Dreams isn't exactly the spectacular homecoming we were hoping for as huge fans of the original Saturn classic. The control is too stiff, odd design choices will have players repeating full levels rather than incorporating a simple checkpoint system which would have saved both progress and sanity alike, and there's a huge amount of emphasis put on non-NiGHTS gameplay, having players control the human children in very unrewarding sections, and incorporating sloppy alternate gameplay rather than just focusing on what made the original so captivating in the first place."

We were quite surprised when a tipster sent us a link to Sega's NiGHTS website which stated the original NiGHTS into Dreams is available to play on GameTap -- because it's not. Turns out Sega jumped the gun just a bit in announcing that NiGHTS into Dreams is coming to GameTap's gaming smorgasbord, possibly by half a year. We spoke with GameTap and the best the company could do was confirm the game would be available "in the first half of 2008," but that more details would "hopefully" be available in January.

In the meantime, feel free to watch GameTap's behind the scenes look at the making of the sequel NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams on the Sega site. To find the video click on "story" and then "behind the story" (sorry, no direct link available). If the whole video gets pulled because of the pre-announcement "oops," consider this whole post a dream until sometime next year.

It's time for a collective "Uh-oh!" We've been hoping against hope that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams would be the game to bring Sega back from their current ruinous state to, well, where they were 11 years ago when the first NiGHTS came out. Back then they were a perfect counterpart to Nintendo, with NiGHTS exploring the move to 3D in a completely different way from Nintendo's Mario 64. It was fresh, exciting, and infinitely replayable.

So when Sega revealed the new NiGHTS on the Wii, we thought the timing was right for a brilliant return to form from Sonic Team, complete with another exciting new controller with which to tool around some ring-filled fantasy lands. Did it turn out like we dreamed? It appears not. At best, it looks like "a pretty good game" -- not quite the Sega renaissance we'd hoped. At least it's not Sonic the Hedgehog bad.

Nintendo Power -- 90%: Nintendo Power shows a secret love for classic Sega -- who knew? "Like the first game, Journey of Dreams does have its share of flaws -- some of the voice acting is questioniable, the on-foot levels are a bit dull, and the motion controls disappoint (steering NiGHTS with the analog stick works much better) -- but the whole is somehow greater than the sum of its parts. This was obviously a labor of love for the development team--something that goes beyond the nuts and bolts of typical game design."

GameSpot -- 75%: GameSpot's Kevin VanOrd makes the game sound fairly cozy for old NiGHTS players and gorgeously dreamlike for new ones: "Once you get settled in with your preferred controls, you'll find Journey of Dreams is an often joyous experience. You'll soar through some lush, colorful dream worlds, from a fragile land of glass to a Broadway-inspired neon utopia. You will often interact with elements of these worlds in clever ways, such as bumping into huge floating billiard balls or having to watch your reflection in the mirror to collect blue chips and fly through rings."

1UP -- 70%: Shane Bettenhausen found that the game's often-slavish devotion to 1996-era design ideals may have kept the game faithful, but it also brought along some unwelcome decisions: "Likewise, poor design choices and a ticking clock conspire to create some of the most confusing boss encounters in recent memory. After blazing through three flight stages you're given only one shot at felling a massive opponent -- if you don't clue into how to damage its tricky weak spot within the strict time limit, look forward to doing it all over again."

We tend to find our personal all-time classics in the mid-70s "good" territory, plus we're blindly devoted to the ideal of a real Sega, so we're just going to wait and see for our own playthrough. It's clear that NiGHTS isn't the smash hit we hoped for, though.

It's that time of the week again when we find out how the Wii and its games sold in Japan. While we really have no need to be worried about the hardware, certain unconfirmed numbers earlier this week did raise concerns about third-party software sales.

So, how did the fair Wii fare in the land of the rising sun this week? Regarding hardware sales, the Wii just barely eked out in front of the PSP to take second place with 168,000 units sold, jumping up over 50,000 units from last week. It's more likely than you think. Look at Sega, spending money to promote their game! They really seem to be targeting more than just the insane NiGHTS fan demographic with their marketing for NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. One YouTuber caught a commercial for the game during Courage the Cowardly Dog. It's very strange to see something like NiGHTS, which seems like the exclusive domain of brutally devoted Sega fans, being advertised on mainstream television. Is it just us, or does the narrator make you think of those Claymation(esque) Puffs commercials? Maybe that's just the default "fairy tale" voice for commercial narration.

Speaking of advertising and Courage, Cartoon Network should really let people know that Courage is still on. We had no idea.

Well now, the sequel to the Saturn game many of us remember (and love) hits retail shelves this week, as we're all finally able to snatch up NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. We've been waiting patiently for the title and are now ready to get our fly on. We can only imagine how anxious you are to get your hands on the game. NiGHTS isn't alone, however, as it's joined by another highly-desired title: Rig Racer 2.

This seems to be becoming a trend, but the handful of Wii games that were released this week in Japan are reported to have had poor first day sales. They were all third-party titles, which is also somewhat worrisome. Here's a look at the numbers:
  • Chocobo's Dungeon (Square Enix) - 30,000 (30% sell through of initial amount shipped)
  • NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Sega) - 7,000 (10% sell through)
  • Soul Calibur Legends (Bandai Namco) - 5,000 (10% sell through)
  • We Love Golf (Capcom) - 4,000 (10% sell through)
  • Shikigami no Shiro III (Arc System Works) - 500
Granted, these are only rumored first day sales, and we'll have to wait until later in the week to get a better grip on the situation, but as of now it doesn't look good.

So, what do we make of these numbers? If they're correct, is it bad news for the Wii and third-party developers, or just more evidence that Japan is shying away from console gaming? While the latter is certainly a factor, third parties certainly can't be happy to see low numbers. However, it's way too early to ring a death knell for any of these games, even if these numbers are correct. We'll just have to wait and see how these games perform in the next few weeks.

If NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams turns out to be awful, we'll feel a little stupid for hyping it so much (though we always temper our enthusiasm with skepticism, because ... Sega). But even if the game ends up not being perfect, the music is pretty much a known quantity. If you like sappy, uplifing orchestral pop, then you'll probably enjoy the NiGHTS soundtrack. But would you enjoy it three discs' worth?

The NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams Official Soundtrack will be released in Japan on January 16th for 3,800 yen ($34) and will include 76 tracks, including nine versions of "Dreams Dreams." Some are instrumental -- perfect for karaoke!

This look into the making of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams comes courtesy of GameTap and was ripped from a DVD at GameStop (we're not sure if you can pick one up or if it's on those in-store video loops, but we're betting on the latter). It shows some of the backstory on the original Saturn game, as well as why Wii was the perfect fit for the new game. Not only that, but it discusses some of the improvements Sega hopes to make with the new game. It's an overall interesting video, so be sure to check it out.

Well then, unless you are a fan of games from Destineer, it looks like there isn't much up for offer this week. Sure, some of you had your interests piqued when you saw your first chunk of gameplay in action. But, was it enough for you to want to pick it up?
