GOG has added 10 more jams to its ever-growing list of OSX-compatible games, almost all of which have never been available on an Apple platform previously.

Mac folk running OSX 10.6.8 or newer can now partake in Syndicate Wars, Rise of the Triad: Dark War, Blade Stone: Planet Strike, Strike Commander, Slipstream 5000, Darklands and Litil Divil. Anyone with OSX 10.7 or newer can also pick up Evil Genius, the phenomenal Guilty Gear X2 #Reload and the experimental (for better or worse) Guilty Gear Isuka. As is typically the case at GOG, most of these games also include bonus goodies, ranging from digital manuals, to wallpapers and complete soundtracks.
GOG adds 10 games for OSX: Guilty Gear, Rise of the Triad and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 May 2013 19:30:00 EST. Indeed Half-Life has been ported to both OS X and Linux today.

We tried it on OS X and it totally worked, though we've yet to try it on Linux. Odds are if you have a Steam account, you probably already own Half-Life - but if for some reason you need to purchase this iconic shooter, it'll set you back $9.99 on Steam right now.
Half-Life now runs on Mac OS X and Linux, we assure you originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Jan 2013 02:30:00 EST. Right now GOG has 50 games available for Mac, 28 of which are only on GOG. Games include: Syndicate, the Ultima and Wing Commander franchises, The Witcher 2 (all out for the first time on Mac today), Machinarium, FTL, Syndicate, Sim City 2000, Dungeon Keeper, Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers and Crusader: No Remorse. Find the complete list of Mac games on GOG here.

GOG is hosting a Mac sale today, which includes The Witcher Enhanced Edition, Crusader: No Remorse, Theme Hospital, Little Big Adventure, Postal Classic and Uncut, and Simcity 2000 for half off.

All GOG games are hybrid, meaning both Mac and PC versions come for one price: Buy it for PC, own it for Mac and vice versa. GOG hosts a native OS X downloader app as well. There are eight free games available for Mac users to test out the system, including Beneath a Steel Sky, Tyrian 2000, Ultima 4 and Warsaw.

Thanks for not making liars out of us, GOG.
Continue reading GOG launches Mac support, 50 games available now

GOG launches Mac support, 50 games available now originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:35:00 EST. It is due in no small part to the aid of EA, the publisher of the original Wasteland.

InXile's Brian Fargo says including the classic PC game was the biggest request during Wasteland 2's Kickstarter campaign. "Fortunately EA has continued to support us on this project and has granted us the ability to bring the original to the players," Fargo said. "It is great to be able to make Wasteland available for those feeling nostalgic or who want to experience it for the first time. It certainly will not be a pre-requisite to understand Wasteland 2, but it adds some extra flavor if you did play the prequel."

Wasteland 2 is currently on track to launch sometime next year.
Continue reading Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland

Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 22:30:00 EST. Thankfully for us, modern technology lets us revisit older works via new platforms. The 7th Guest, for instance, has been available for quite some time on iOS and OS X.

But hey, maybe you - like us - have yet to purchase Trilobyte's seminal work? The game will be natively OSX compatible, according to Beamdog creative director Trent Oster.

All three ports will reportedly "play similar," despite the fact that the iPad version uses a touch interface. Oster also announced cross-platform multiplayer for the title, which does exactly what it sounds like by allowing PC, OSX and iPad users to all Baldur around together in the same games. Joystiq apologizes for the error.]

Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, which just started its "Developer Preview" period and will be released to the populous sometime this year, features a security protocol called Gatekeeper, which prevents unsigned applications from running, depending on user preferences. Gamasutra reports Gatekeeper is set to only allow applications from the Mac App Store and from developer who've registered with Apple.

This means that, for any games and apps made by designers who have not registered with Apple, you will have to adjust Gatekeeper's initial restrictions.

Since you can allow content from unidentified/non-App Store sources, it doesn't seem like the system itself is inherently malicious or anti-gaming. It is, however, prohibitive, and may affect off-store apps downloaded by users unfamiliar with Gatekeeper.
Next OS X update blocks unsigned apps by default, unless security adjusted [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST. Some Ubisoft games won't be playable at all, but that list is rather short and will only affect Mac and PC gamers.

Ubisoft's most recent triple-A titles will thankfully be unaffected: Anno 2070, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Driver: San Francisco, and Just Dance 3 will all remain playable (both online and offline) during the transition. The OSX version of the original Assassin's Creed, however, will be completely unplayable, as will the OSX version of Splinter Cell: Conviction and the PC versions of Might and Magic: Heroes VI and Tom Clancy's HAWX 2.

The online portions of all other Ubisoft games will be disabled during the transition, although offline modes should still function normally. If your allegiance to the Mac platform was the only thing holding you back from playing Psychonauts, then today is your day: Double Fine has announced the game is available for Mac OSX. The Mac port is currently available on the Mac App store and Steam, along with other digital distribution channels. Accompanying it is a free iOS app that allows you to view all of the game's Memory Vaults right on your iDevice, along with new commentary from Tim Schafer and Scott Campbell.

The PC version of the game has also been updated to allow for achievements and cloud saves on Steam, plus it scales down the difficulty of the Meat Circus. Additionally, we'd like you to do a us a favor and not google "meat circus."
The Mac App Store, the OS X software distribution platform which was announced during Apple's late October press conference, has been stocking up on app submissions for over a month -- today, the company announced these apps will be available for Mac owners' perusal on January 6, 2011. We still have plenty of time to digest this news, because 2011 is still ... let's see ... three weeks away? Jeez. That's another year of our lives, siphoned away, like so many grains through the hourglass' unforgivingly wide channel.

There's no telling how strong of a contender the new storefront will be in the gaming space -- especially now that Steam is catering to Mac users. However, considering developers still be making that mad money on the iOS App Store, the new platform should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Mac App Store opens its doors on January 6 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 19:30:00 EST. During Apple's "Back to the Mac" press event (happening now!), Steve Jobs introduced the Mac App Store, a Mac OS X variant of the hugely successful iOS App Store seen on its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad products. Like the portable counterpart, the Mac App Store offers an app clearinghouse ("the best place to discover apps," in Apple's words), one-click downloads, both free and paid apps (which will share the same 70/30 revenue split between developers and Apple as the iOS App Store), and automatic installation and app updates. Apps you purchase from the Mac App Store will be licensed for use on all your personal Macs - we imagine you'll be required to authenticate with your Apple ID on each system.

While the Mac App Store will be arriving with copies of OS X 10.7, dubbed "Lion," this summer, Jobs revealed that Apple would be releasing this feature early. "We don't want to wait for Lion," Jobs said. "We're going to put it out on Snow Leopard, and will open within 90 days."

For any game developers who want to get in on the desktop-oriented gold rush, Apple is accepting app submissions beginning in November. At least for now, there doesn't appear to be any reason to worry about the relatively "open" confines of Mac OS becoming any more iPad-like ... Let's at least wait and see how this Mac App Store does first.
Mac App Store coming to OS X 10.6 and 10.7 'within 90 days' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 14:34:00 EST. Since Steam launched for Mac earlier this month, those of us enjoying the service have been seeking the answer to one crucial question: Will we ever be able to shoot Nazi dinosaurs like everyone else? It appears our answer is "yes, eventually," as one Valve employee took to the publisher's forums to respond to fans questions about whether Source mods would be available on Mac, saying, "We are working on a code update so you can compile your mods for OS X."

The employee doesn't go into specifics, but MacStories guesses we could see the update as soon as WWDC. Frankly, it's possible that the update will arrive around then, but we'll probably be so ensconced in news about the new iPhone that Nazi dinosaurs will be far from the top of our priority list. Oh, who're we kidding? Killing Nazi dinosaurs is always near the top of the priority list.
In this video, the Wiimote is doing double-duty as a mouse here in World of Warcraft on Mac OSX. So far that means we have replacement mouse, game controller, TV smasher, web browser, whiteboard, weather forecaster and doorstop. What other uses will people unlock in the coming months? No one can say.

For now, sit back and enjoy the Wiimote in Warcraft, for once on a Mac before a PC. In fact, you can go buy a Wiimote on its own, no Wii required, and WoW it up in style. For Windows users, this process is simple; it's just a matter of "bridging" your computer's wifi connection to your PC's ethernet port which is plugged into your Xbox. For Mac users, the process ain't so easy. What follows is a guide for getting your Xbox 360 to accept Mac OS X's internet sharing option.
Continue reading How to share your Mac's internet connection with your Xbox

How to share your Mac's internet connection with your Xbox originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Jul 2006 10:00:00 EST. The full tech specs -- which are over at Apple's site -- mention that the MacBook features an Intel GMA950: in other words, an integrated graphics chip identical to the Mac mini. Previously we've summarized the disadvantages of integrated graphics and we've moaned about the poor graphics performance of Apple's line-up in an attempt to force someone at Apple to listen, but it was all in vain.

Apple's supposed "gaming solution" (Windows) is hardly a solution now that Apple's consumer line-up (MacBook, Mac mini) doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, the prosumer line-up (MacBook Pro, iMac) features a low- to mid-range mobile chip and the remaining top-of-the-range machine (PowerMac) is stuck with PowerPC processors, crappy default GPUs (GeForce 6600s, yuck!) and a largely unobtainable price.

If Apple one days wakes up and realizes that there are a load of potential gaming switchers sitting on the fence it would either: tell, no, force Intel to make some integrated chips that aren't "virtually unplayable for anybody that cares about gaming" or provide the option of dedicated graphics cards for gamers, even if it costs us more.
More integrated graphics from Apple originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 May 2006 12:00:00 EST. The legion of Windows users havewaited long enough; Levi Wolfe has done the grunt work and ported the handy* little app over to theWindows platform for the rest of the computer-using world to enjoy.

*By "handy" we of course mean"of no discernible value."
