<div><em>Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition</em> takes control of the PC and Mac realms on June 18 via <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/231740/">Steam</a>. Huzzah! It comes in a standard version for $10 or the Digital Deluxe Edition for $15. Standard pre-orders include 800 pieces of in-game gold and the original soundtrack, and the deluxe edition gets a special character, a farm location, a sci-fi bedroom pack and 800 gold pieces.<br />
<br />
From Behold Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, <em>Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition</em> is an RPG about playing an RPG, classic-style on a tabletop, with dice and surrounded by friends. It is, of course, actually on a screen, and you'll probably play by yourself, with a mouse and keyboard. At least you'll still have a tabletop.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/09/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition-rolls-out-for-pc-mac-on-jun/">Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition rolls out for PC, Mac on June 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Jun 2013 21:00:00 EST. <br />
Owners of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good,_the_Bad_and_the_Ugly"><em>The Showdown Effect</em></a> can download some free DLC, adding a pair of new maps and playable heroes to Arrowhead Game Studios' latest. South Eastwood is an old west town, while Fort Fiesta follows a Mexican fort motif - both maps were heavily inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, Italian-produced films for Hollywood such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good,_the_Bad_and_the_Ugly"><em>The Good, the Bad and the Ugly</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The first new hero to fight her way onto <em>The Showdown Effect</em>'s roster is Thelma Vaine, a pink-haired British spy armed with a cloaking device. The other new combatant is Dr. Johnny Bionic, whose robotic drill-saw-arm is plagued with a murderous lust. Sounds like that'd be a benefit, given the situation.<br />
<br />
Finally, this free update is rounded out by a "series of Reddit costume pieces." These can be purchased through the in-game store using unlocked currency.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/08/the-showdown-effect-adds-pair-of-new-maps-heroes-in-free-update/">The Showdown Effect adds pair of new maps, heroes in free update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 May 2013 21:30:00 EST. "There's something in the works - I can't say yet, but we are looking into it."<br /><br />Van Dyke pointed to a recent addition in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/war-of-the-roses"><em>War of the Roses</em></a>, an online medieval battle game that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/05/war-of-the-roses-publisher-announces-permanent-franchise-team/">he oversees</a>. "Obviously we've added controller support [to <em>War of the Roses</em>], there's a proof-of-concept that definitely works." Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean <em>War of the Roses</em> is coming to PS4 - in fact, Van Dyke said Paradox still isn't sure what exactly it wants to do on PS4 yet.<br /><br /><span>"We first need to make sure we can get the game running on the hardware, but the hardware is much more easier to work with than it was previously when I was at DICE on </span><em>Battlefield,</em><span> where there were struggles with Sony's hardware - especially the way they allocated memory. They've eliminated a lot of these hurdles [on PS4] and x86 makes it much more plausible that we can do it."</span><br /><br />For now, "it's definitely a realistic possibility and something we'd like to happen, but we're not entirely sure we can deliver on that." He said it's a bit of an inverse scenario for Paradox, where the developer wants to ensure its PS4 game isn't interpreted as "a cheap PC port on console."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/ps4-project-from-paradox-wont-attempt-cheap-pc-port/">PS4 project from Paradox won't attempt 'cheap PC port'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 20:30:00 EST. It features themes seen in the genre, but for Hargelid the differentiator is the simple gameplay that provides a vehicle for high-level tactics.<br /><br />"This is why we think we're not a MOBA," Hargelid said. "<em>Magicka: Wizard Wars</em> is much more skill-based, much more hardcore to be honest. At the same time, anyone who hasn't played this type of game before can simply be satisfied by gameplay. It's quite simple to get into it and it's not this 40-minute game mode you have to learn what the progression looks like and halfway through, you'll know if you lost or won."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/magicka-wizard-wars-not-a-moba-revenue-model-still-up-in-the/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Magicka: Wizard Wars 'not a MOBA,' revenue model still up in the air</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/magicka-wizard-wars-not-a-moba-revenue-model-still-up-in-the/">Magicka: Wizard Wars 'not a MOBA,' revenue model still up in the air</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 20:00:00 EST. Behold Studios has also added a tavern to switch out characters, so players no longer need to start a new game when they unlock a new character type, an issue in the current version of the mobile game. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/">Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/#5763511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/screen-shot-2013-03-12-at-1.11.02-am_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/#5763512"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/screen-shot-2013-03-12-at-1.11.26-am_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/#5763513"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/screen-shot-2013-03-12-at-1.12.50-am_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/#5763514"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/screen-shot-2013-03-12-at-1.13.04-am_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition/#5763515"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/screen-shot-2013-03-12-at-1.13.20-am_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/knights-of-pen-and-paper-1-edition-coming-to-steam/">Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition coming to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. The studio opened in February and will be headed up by executive vice president John Hargelid, who's had stints at DICE working on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-bad-company-2"><em>Battlefield: Bad Company 2</em></a> as a producer and EA's business side before making his way over to Paradox.<br /><br />Paradox North lead designer David Nisshager also spent time at DICE, while lead artist Staffan Norling and senior animator Patrick Kling both worked on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/just-cause"><em>Just Cause</em></a> for Avalanche Studios. Right now Paradox North is about ten deep, with a mixture of new talent and old veterans, but a Paradox Interactive representative tells us plans to expand the team are in place.<br /><br /><em>Magicka: Wizard Wars</em> will be Paradox North's first game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/paradox-north-is-a-new-stockholm-studio-of-former-dice-and-avala/">Paradox North is a new Stockholm studio of former DICE and Avalanche vets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 11:10:00 EST. Paradox's announcement doesn't mention the genre explicitly, but the new game sounds like it falls under Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA).<br /><br />In <em>Magicka: Wizard Wars</em>, two teams of four wizards duel to the death using <em>Magicka</em>'s established spell-crafting system as the foundation for combat. The game is differentiated by "short battles, persistent character progression, and plenty of laughter."<br /><br /><em>Magicka: Wizard Wars</em> is in development at Paradox North, a new studio in Stockholm under the banner of Paradox Interactive. The studio is composed of former DICE and Avalanche Studios talent, and led by executive vice president John Hargelid.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/magicka-gets-a-touch-of-moba-in-wizard-wars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Magicka gets a touch of MOBA in 'Wizard Wars'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/magicka-gets-a-touch-of-moba-in-wizard-wars/">Magicka gets a touch of MOBA in 'Wizard Wars'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. And starting tomorrow, Paradox will hold <a href="http://beta.theshowdowneffect.com/">signups for an open beta</a> for all interested parties.<br /><br />Jorjani sums up <em>The Showdown Effect</em> as "<em>Worms</em> in real-time" with a decidedly '80s and '90s action movie and television influence. "We've turned that into a 2.5D action online brawler - the closest game to date might maybe be <em>Smash Bros.</em> or <em>PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale</em>." He also likened <em>The Showdown Effect</em> to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUzPB4iahB4"><em>Soldat</em></a>, a PC multiplayer side-scrolling shooter from back in 2002.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/">The Showdown Effect (12/17/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/#5505354"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/dutchmcclone_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/#5505355"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/haileyskye_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/#5505356"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/lancekoboldski_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/#5505358"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/random_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-12-17-2012/#5505359"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/shurfoo_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/17/the-showdown-effect-targets-march-launch-10-price-tag-beta-si/">The Showdown Effect targets March launch, $10 price tag; beta signups tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 22:00:00 EST. After all, that is generally what happens after it's been established that "Winter is coming."<br /><br />Winter Has Arrived brings two new snowy maps based on the battles of Wakefield and Towton, new armor and new weapons. Two additional, new weapons will come at a price on Decemeber 21, based on medieval depictions of the Virgin Mary - the Dagger and Sword of Mary for Christ's Mass. They will be sold at a discount through December 26, when they will transform to full price.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/17/war-of-the-roses-free-content-update-does-battle-on-december-19/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>War of the Roses free content update does battle on December 19</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/17/war-of-the-roses-free-content-update-does-battle-on-december-19/">War of the Roses free content update does battle on December 19</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 16:30:00 EST. Next month, <em>War of the Roses</em> will get its first content update, adding new weapons, armor and color customization options to the multiplayer-based title.<br /><br />At some point this "winter," Paradox plans on injecting two new game modes across a pair of new snow-covered locales. The first new mode is called 'Pitched Battle' and will go into beta "soon," though Paradox hasn't revealed any exact details on the mode.<br /><br />The two new <em>War of the Roses</em> maps will be modeled after the historic winter battles at Wakefield and Towton. The November update is the first of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/15/war-of-the-roses-post-launch-plan-monthly-content-updates/">monthly content releases</a> Paradox has promised for <em>War of the Roses</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/war-of-the-roses-first-content-update-rides-for-november-adds/">War of the Roses' first content update rides for November, adds new weapons and armor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 04:00:00 EST. "We'll continue to improve the game and add substantial content for all players."<br /><br />We reached out to Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester and asked why he has such faith in this series less than a week after launch. The executive told us, "It's based on the fan feedback and the sales numbers so far. Our goal is to continue improving the game together with the fans."<br /><br /><em>War of the Roses</em>, which launched at a value price of $30, is expected to have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/15/war-of-the-roses-post-launch-plan-monthly-content-updates/">monthly content updates</a>. Bjal-Abaddon can "evolve into a powerful dungeon lord" while you customize his weapons and armor, build a dungeon and kill crusading heroes attempting to take down your army of darkness. Not all of it takes place underground, however, as <em>Impire </em>also lets you send raiding parties to the surface for loot.<br /><br />The campaign is playable both in single-player and co-op, and <em>Impire </em>will also have some multiplayer modes for up to four people (Paradox will share more on those later). <em>Impire </em>is slated to launch on the PC during the first quarter of 2013.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/">Impire</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/#5176351"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/impire-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/#5176352"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/impire-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/#5176353"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/impire-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/#5176354"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/impire-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/impire/#5176355"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/impire-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/26/impire-a-new-pc-strategy-game-from-cyanide-studios-coming-q1-2/">Impire, a new PC strategy game from Cyanide Studios, coming Q1 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jul 2012 18:00:00 EST. They weren't indie darlings or supported by the donations of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter">Kickstarter</a> enthusiasts. And they weren't first-person shooters, nor character action games set against historic backdrops. Both games - Fatshark's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/war-of-the-roses"><em>War of the Roses</em></a> and Torn Banner's <em>Chivalry: Medieval Warfare</em> - are about as far from my usual radar as games go. That was until I played them, of course.<br /><br />Both <em>Chivalry</em> and <em>WotR</em> are set in (you guessed it) medieval times, though neither employs its setting much beyond a backdrop. The games are multiplayer-focused affairs; neither has any sort of single-player campaign. Given the backdrop, you might assume multiplayer to be of the <em>Mount &amp; Blade</em> variety. You'd be wrong.<br /><br />Both games are vicious, fast, and, most importantly, <em>accessible</em>. These are not the sim medieval combat affairs of many Paradox Interactive-published games. These are arcade-style medieval combat games, presented in first- and third-person perspectives, and they're like nothing else I've played in the past few years.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/war-of-the-roses-and-chivalry-wage-war-without-all-the-nonse/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'War of the Roses' and 'Chivalry' wage war without all the nonsense</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/war-of-the-roses-and-chivalry-wage-war-without-all-the-nonse/">'War of the Roses' and 'Chivalry' wage war without all the nonsense</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 06:00:00 EST. But before I could place my fingers over the WASD keys and start shooting everything in sight, I had to ask one question: Will there be a beta?<br /><br />"Beta in the summer," Englund quickly responded. As for how the beta will work and who will get in, Englund says "that's still being decided" by publisher Paradox Interactive, and that more would be revealed later.<br /><br />Another question I had was in regards to controller support -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/magicka"><em>Magicka</em></a> on the PC is compatible with Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller, and when asked if <em>The Showdown Effect</em> would support it too, Englund told me that the earliest testing on <em>The Showdown Effect</em> was done with controllers. "The first months of development we actually only used game pads so, yeah, it should be in there," he told me.<br /><br /><em>The Showdown Effect</em> is currently slated to launch "<a href="http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?592836-The-Showdown-Effect-FAQ">when it's done -- in 2012</a>."<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/">The Showdown Effect (GDC 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869322"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869323"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869324"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869325"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869326"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/face-off-against-the-showdown-effect-beta-this-summer/">Face off against The Showdown Effect beta this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST. Each is set to launch on the PC and Mac sometime this year.<br /><br />The first game is <em>The Showdown Effect</em>, from Pixeldiet Entertainment and Arrowhead Game Studios -- you may recall the latter outfit's previous effort, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/magicka">Magicka</a>. </em>Paradox describes the game as "a 2.5D multiplayer action game in which players will be participating in death-matches to gain glory and fame." It's set in Neo Tokyo in the year 2027, and focuses on a cop destined to meet his ... destiny.<br /><br />The second on the list is <em>Dungeonland</em>, from Brazil-based newcomer Critical Studio. Up to three players assault <em>Dungeonland</em>, a theme park where adventurers can go to hack and slash stuff together, while the fourth player takes on the role of Game Master, devising traps and overall trying to kill their friends -- sounds like the perfect role for that one passive-aggressive friend of yours.<br /><br />Finally, <em>Red Frontier</em> is a competitive RTS that tasks players with mining resource deposits in space. Sharing is caring, guys -- even in the future we can't get along? It seems so.<br /><br />Hit the jump to check out the rest of the announcement trailers and some screens, hot off the wherever screenshots come from.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/">The Showdown Effect (GDC 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869322"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869323"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869324"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869325"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-showdown-effect-gdc-2012/#4869326"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/theshowdowneffectscreenshots-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/paradox-the-showdown-effect-dungeonland-red-frontier/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Paradox reveals 3 new games: The Showdown Effect, Dungeonland and Red Frontier</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/paradox-the-showdown-effect-dungeonland-red-frontier/">Paradox reveals 3 new games: The Showdown Effect, Dungeonland and Red Frontier</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 04:00:00 EST. The publisher, which has the peculiar habit of using <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/paradox-ceo-outs-fatsharks-next-project-codenamed-project-pos/">Kevin Costner films as codenames</a>, has three new games based on brand new intellectual properties to reveal.<br /><br />Project "JFK" comes from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/magicka">Magicka</a></em> studio Arrowhead Game Studios and is described as a multiplayer combat game with "a focus on killing your friends and looking cool doing it." Project "Revenge!" is by Critical Studio out of Brazil and is an "action packed action game in a world that can be described as death trap for heroes and children." As you can see from the trailer above, the <em>Game</em> has sort of a casual <em>Dwarf Fortress</em> feel, allowing you to build, upgrade, and improve a dwarven clan's headquarters, while also looting and battling whatever mysterious foes happen to be living beneath it.<br /><br />We hope that trailer announcer gets over that sore throat he seems to have, though; that's one heck of a frog. <em>A Game of Dwarves</em> is due out later this year on PC and PSN -- you can see some screenshots, along with some brand new concept art from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/magicka-summons-1-3-million-in-sales-new-expansion-in-the-works/">the also-announced <em>Magicka</em> expansion</a>, in the galleries below.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/">A Game of Dwarves (1/24/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/#4772992"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/agameofdwarfesdefaultwin32dev--11-16-51-42_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/#4772993"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/agameofdwarfesdefaultwin32dev--11-18-25-00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/#4772994"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/agameofdwarfesdefaultwin32dev--11-18-59-32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/#4772995"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/agameofdwarfesdefaultwin32dev--11-37-08-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-game-of-dwarves-1-24-12/#4772996"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/agameofdwarfesdefaultwin32dev--11-37-15-99_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/magicka-the-other-side-of-the-coin-concept-art/">Magicka: The Other Side of the Coin (Concept Art)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/magicka-the-other-side-of-the-coin-concept-art/#4773117"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/magickatheothersideofthecoindwarves_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/magicka-the-other-side-of-the-coin-concept-art/#4773118"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/magickatheothersideofthecoinelves_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/magicka-the-other-side-of-the-coin-concept-art/#4773119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/magickatheothersideofthecoinhumans_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/magicka-the-other-side-of-the-coin-concept-art/#4773116"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/magickatheothersideofthecoincoverart_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/paradox-interactive-announces-a-game-of-dwarves-reveals-new-mag/">Paradox Interactive announces A Game of Dwarves, reveals new Magicka concepts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 23:59:00 EST. You're a die hard PC Battlefield player, and simply won't play it anywhere else. You refuse to use standalone clients for launching your favorite PC games. Do these things describe you? Then you're probably a big fan of EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/origin">Origin</a> game service, which will be getting content from 11 publishers "in the coming months," according to a press release issued by EA this morning.<br /><br />The first game to be added is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/rift-available-on-eas-origin-today/">the aforementioned</a> <em>Rift</em> from Trion Worlds, with games from Robot Entertainment, CD Projekt RED, Freebird Games, Recoil Games, Autumn Games, 1C Company, Inxile Entertainment, Paradox Interactive, Core Learning, and N3V Games joining <em>Rift</em>'s ranks soon. EA says that more specific information on pricing and release dates will be offered in the near future via Origin, so keep an eye out while you're remaining steadfast in your stance against that <em>other</em> major digital retailer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/ea-adds-cd-projekt-red-paradox-and-nine-other-publishers-to-or/">EA adds CD Projekt RED, Paradox, and nine other publishers to Origin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 21:00:00 EST. Another tidbit from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/magicka-summons-1-3-million-in-sales-new-expansion-in-the-works/">Paradox's convention</a> in Sweden now: the company has revealed <em>A Game of Dwarves</em>. Developed by Zeal Game Studio, which has had some <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/35480/">experience with dwarves</a> -- and <a href="http://www.zealgamestudio.com/games.html">pirate ... griddles</a> -- <em>A Game of Dwarves</em> is a strategy title that has players in control of a dwarf settlement, in which you must "manage your crew of dwarves to dig, build and defend themselves," reports <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/19/paradox-announces-a-game-of-dwarves/">Rock, Paper, Shotgun</a>.<br />

<em>A Game of Dwarves</em> is slated for release this year, though other details remain under wraps for the moment. Cheeky co-op action title <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/magicka"><em>Magicka</em></a> has hit another sales milestone, passing 1.3 million in sales, according to <a href="http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/16200/magicka-sells-13-million-copies-since-launch-new-expansion-revealed">StrategyInformer</a>. Paradox Interactive revealed the news during its recent convention in Sweden. Paradox is also planning a new expansion for the game entitled "The Other Side of the Coin," which sees players taking on the roles of <em>Magicka</em>'s enemies. If the world's in danger from a creeping, Cthulhu-inspired nightmare, who you gonna call? Umm, perhaps not the four wildly powerful wizards ... imbued with a clumsy tendency to immolate one another.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/16/magicka-the-stars-are-left-trailer-crafted-with-love/">Magicka: The Stars are Left trailer crafted with love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 20:00:00 EST. Have you and your three wizardly cohorts blown up everything in the universe using your crossbred incantations? No, friend, you haven't. Just ask the subtitle of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/magicka"><em>Magicka</em>'s</a> recently announced expansion: <em>The Stars are Left</em>. The add-on isn't just a commentary on your failure to destroy heavenly bodies; it will add a whole new campaign to the title featuring a "horror-mystery inspired by the popular Cthulhu Mythos." Cthul-who? (We kid.)<br />
<br />
The campaign, which is set to launch this Winter, will feature new enemies and (assumedly tentacle-faced) bosses, items and, according to a fact sheet sent to us by Paradox Interactive, "we make fun of <em>Minecraft</em> this time." Man, it's about time someone took that game down a peg.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/magicka-takes-on-cthulhu-and-minecraft-in-the-stars-are-left-exp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Magicka takes on Cthulhu and Minecraft in The Stars are Left expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/magicka-takes-on-cthulhu-and-minecraft-in-the-stars-are-left-exp/">Magicka takes on Cthulhu and Minecraft in The Stars are Left expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST.
