Metro: Last Light features a fixed field of view, and while we didn't have a problem with that, other players have. Developer 4A Games heard the feedback and has a fix in the next title update coming to Steam - but it comes with a warning. Changing the field of view could trigger a range of bugs, including breaking cut scene animations and decreasing game performance in general.

"We had considered offering three FOV pre-sets, but this would still require significant work to re-do every animation, adjust the HUD and UI and other seemingly small but incredibly time consuming tasks," 4A writes on the game's Steam discussion board. "Even with a wider but still fixed field of view, Artyom's hands would look too far away. We know - we tried."

4A is looking at other possible solutions, but for now the next title update's fix will have to do.

"This may well trigger a number of issues listed above - you have been warned!" 4A says.
Metro: Last Light dev warns against changing FOV with coming patch originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 May 2013 20:45:00 EST. Lab Zero Games released a PlayStation Network-exclusive batch of new DLC for its 2D fighter Skullgirls, giving the game's cast a wider variety of colorful wardrobe options.

Skullgirls' eight color packs grant access to five additional color schemes per character, and are priced at $0.99 each. Players can also grab all 40 alternate outfits by purchasing a $5 bundle.

Owners of the Xbox Live Arcade edition will have to wait until a later date to explore this new world of color coordination. Starting today, however, XBLA players now have access to a long-delayed balance patch. The newly released "required compatibility update," which is available as a hefty 273 MB download, fixes regional online play and improves GGPO performance, among many other character-specific tweaks. A full list of changes is here.

Gallery: Skullgirls (New Characters and Color Packs)

Skullgirls character color packs hit PSN, balance patch out on XBLA originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 May 2013 22:15:00 EST. The new mode, Arms Race Team Deathmatch, gives players 150 score per kill, leading to quick Scorestreaks. It's available for a "limited time."

The multiplayer tweaks are mostly bug fix type changes - "Fixed an issue reported by the community where players could get infinite ammo for the Death Machine and War Machine" and the like. You can find a full list of tweaks on both PS3 and Xbox after the break.
Continue reading Black Ops 2 updated with Arms Race Team Deathmatch and multiplayer fixes

Black Ops 2 updated with Arms Race Team Deathmatch and multiplayer fixes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Apr 2013 13:30:00 EST. While Two Tribes feels it provided enough of a helping hand the first time round, the developer says it "noticed a number of people completely missed those hints and got stuck."

The patch, which is surfacing within two weeks' time by Two Tribes' watch, also introduces a new secret area, as well as a number of fixes and tweaks. Two Tribes also has a second, "more involving" patch in the works, but that'll take a while longer to leave the nest.
Toki Tori 2 patch in submission, introduces more hints originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 14:45:00 EST. EA Maxis says players should expect server outages "for a few hours" while the update rolls out.

Some of the issues surrounding city processing will be resolved, as will problems with spontaneous fluctuations of tourists, school buses getting stuck, sudden air pollution creeping in, and more. The full list of changes is published on the EA Maxis forums.

Meanwhile, SimCity for Mac is still set to arrive in June.
SimCity 2.0 update on April 22, mayors getting mansions originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 02:45:00 EST. The firmware update adds several quality of life improvements to the system, including improved load times when changing between software, or returning to the main Wii U menu. Also included is the Wii U Virtual Console.

Additionally, users will now be able to transfer data between USB drives and install background-downloaded software while playing other games. Installed software also has the ability to automatically download and install updates, without requiring the user to run the software first. Furthermore, the Wii U will now continue to download and install software while the system is powered down. You'll also be able to hold "B" at start-up to boot directly into Wii mode, if you're into that sort of thing.
Wii U Spring System Update coming next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST. The update for the Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, enabling off-screen play and cross-region multiplayer, went live last night, Capcom reports.

Now you can play all you want without the people you live with noticing how bad you are at, say, trapping live monsters, as you fail that tutorial mission repeatedly. Fight Requests, also found in Super Street Fighter 4 (among other games) allow players to queue up for online matches while practicing in offline modes, such as Arcade and Training.

The update also fixes various online matchmaking bugs, voice chat errors and in-game glitches, the full list of which can be found here, if you're into that sort of thing. Starting with about 250,000 registered players, the game has since grown up to around 2 million, with the devs fixing bugs and providing weekly patches since then.

The weekly patches, which have been adding new skills and items to the game, will continue to roll out. But version 1.0 is going to be the game's full release, when the "open beta" tag comes off, and the game "will be reviewable," according to Wilson. The update will add a full story to the game's Act 3, including lots of new monsters and items, and "do the stuff we had to cut corners on" throughout the game's development, Wilson said.

After that, "we intend to do expansions over the next five to ten years," Wilson told us. The team has no set plans for releases, and if they can put a major feature together in less time, then Wilson says they'll do it. The game already had a lot of success with "races," which are special events that challenge players to speedrun the game under special conditions. But in general, he said, given the current player base, "adding a new act to the game is probably a once a year thing."
Path of Exile version 1.0 is six months away, one expansion per year after originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST. Santa Monica Studio Community Strategist Aaron Kaufman posted on the PlayStation Blog to explained the changes introduced by the game's patch.

Found in Chapter 28 of the game's single-player campaign, the 'Trial of Archimedes' pits Kratos against waves of enemies as he ascends a tower toward Ascension's final chapter. The tweak will now provide players across all difficulties with a slew of "green health orbs and a nominal amount of blue magic orbs" after each successive wave, of which there are three.

"In every God of War game, establishing a well-paced difficulty ramp towards the end of the game is paramount to us. Based on player response, the degree of challenge offered here was short of our goal of being perfectly balanced," Kaufman wrote.

The 1.03 patch also adds new, visual multiplayer customization options called "Marks" that players can obtain based on a number of criteria, including selected allegiance. The update should automatically install on Steam, so unfortunately there's no way to keep that particular glitch (feature?) in your game.

When Colonial Marines launched in February, we found it to be a broken, unfinished mess, and most others agreed. Since it hit stores, developers Gearbox, TimeGate and publisher Sega have yet to agree where the blame lies. The patch notes mention corrections for "some stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and Nvidia graphics hardware" and "some small improvements to TressFX hair rendering." These chief issues led to Nvidia apologizing for the game's unstable performance at maximum settings on its GeForce cards.

Going by the Steam and Eidos forums, the patch does provide significant improvement for some of the stability issues, although by the sounds of it TressFX is still somewhat flaky.
Tomb Raider PC patch addresses hairy Nvidia issues originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 09:30:00 EST. "We had never experienced this issue on our devkits, during development, so it seems that this is an issue that only occurs on retail Wii Us," notes Gaijin co-founder Alex Neuse. "This makes it super gnarly to debug. It might not even be our bug. But we have tried to fix it."

Aside from making it stop doing that awful thing, the upcoming patch will make a few other tweaks, like saving your highest score on the leaderboard instead of your most recent, and putting some feedback in the mysteriously long-lasting login screen.

Despite this problem, we recommend playing Runner2.
Gaijin Games working on Runner 2 Wii U patch originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST. The introduction of cross-region play, which allows North American and European players to monster-hunt together in battles for up to four players, represents Capcom backtracking on its decision to region-lock the game, and the company says the update is a "response to community feedback."

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate comes to North America in three weeks time on March 19, so it won't have cross-region or off-TV functionality at launch. The game is also set to receive free additional quests on both 3DS and Wii U, with the first of these available at launch.
Continue reading Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to get cross-region, off-TV play in April

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to get cross-region, off-TV play in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 11:30:00 EST. In addition to the new map, the update also includes five new versions of a mech called the Trebuchet, which specializes in long range combat and carries medium weight.

Finally, the newest update also adds in what Pirahna Games is calling "Phase 3" of the matchmaking system, which will allow players of the same skill to find and compete against each other in a balanced way, despite what mech they're driving. The new system also allows for cosmetic holograms in the cockpit, so you can now show off any House Faction loyalties you happen to have. Us, we're partial to Winterfell, but -- oh wait, wrong setting. At any rate, the update is now live on the servers, so go get that Mech a Warrior-in'!
MechWarrior Online gets biggest map ever, new matchmaking system in latest update originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Feb 2013 13:00:00 EST. The most notable changes involve the ability to reset all outposts - allowing you to assault and capture each one again -and a new higher difficulty mode called Master.

On the multiplayer side, the additions focus on user-generated maps. Ubisoft promises a "more intuitive feedback interface" with the ability to add "feedback tags" to better parse custom maps. There will also be beta map testing available to editors, so they no longer need to create a map and simply publish it. Others who wish to help during beta testing of these maps can hop into a special playlist and test it out, and authors can go into a spectator mode to watch those playing.

Ubisoft promises a series of patches to add all of this stuff to Far Cry 3, so don't expect it all at once. The full list of changes is available through the source link below.

[Thanks, Thomas.]

Gallery: Far Cry 3 (Update)

Far Cry 3 getting Outpost reset option, new 'Master' difficulty originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 20:45:00 EST. After the patch is issued, Stranger's Wrath HD will include an option to disable the PS Vita's rear touch-pad controls. When asked for comment, the rear touch-pad on our PS Vita replied, "Awwww man, really?"
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD getting leaderboards, tweaked controls on PS Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 03:30:00 EST. Patch 0.10.0 hit yesterday, at the same time as the Triton avatar pack, which boasts naval-themed avatars.

The new mode, Holdout, sees teams race to a single capture point and attempt to defend it until the end of the match. Balaklava Sub-Pen, the update's new map, was designed specifically for Holdout rounds. It's a symmetrical, compact area inspired by a secret underground submarine facility in Ukraine that was operational until 1933. Clan Matches build upon the implementation of October's Clan feature, allowing players to set up matches against other clans.

The Triton pack offers new helmets and armor vests, upgraded weapons and seaborne avatars. The Triton pack will be available for a limited time, during January only. In December Blizzard said it would work on a dueling system, though there was no word on how it would work. Today's preview solves some of that mystery: Dueling will be a safe environment for players to kick the crud out of each other, devoid of "the potential for griefing as it existed in Diablo 2," Blizzard writes.

Players who wish to duel must speak with Nek the Brawler at the inn in New Tristram, who will transport the party to the Scorched Chapel, a new area designed specifically for dueling. Scorched Chapel has four areas, the church, graveyard, river and lake, and supports up to four players in free-for-all battles. Dueling doesn't offer any rewards aside from bragging rights, and death in the dueling area isn't permanent, even for Hardcore players.

Other updates in patch 1.0.7 include class updates, crafting additions, monster power and affix changes, and quality of life improvements. Check out the entire preview list here.
Latest Diablo 3 patch offers dueling without all the pain originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jan 2013 19:30:00 EST. The post notes acquiring an internal hard drive resolves the issues, but goes on to say Telltale is giving XBLM codes to those who cannot acquire a hard drive, as long as they supply proof of purchase.

The other major issue which cropped up last month saw some players unable to start episodes after the first one; upon trying to load Episode 2, for example, they'd find themselves restarting Episode 1. In another forum post, Telltale says it's submitted a remedying patch to Microsoft which, once approved, is being made available as a title update. The post doesn't note when the update is expected to be available. In the meantime, Telltale suggests how players can confront two different variations of the issue.

For those who have online-enabled Xbox Live accounts and are playing the retail version, Telltale says playing the game while connected to Live should remedy the problem. While Telltale doesn't have a guaranteed workaround for the "rare" variation in which save data can be overwritten, the developer notes some users had success with recovering affected save files by copying them across from Slot 1 to Slot 3. This apparently leaves you at the start of the episode you were last playing, but with all previous choices still saved.

[Thanks, Johnny]
Walking Dead XBLM codes being given to players with disc version issues originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jan 2013 11:00:00 EST. The delay is due to the file size of the update itself, according to XBLA Fan's translation of a tweet from the official Japanese Skullgirls account.

While Microsoft limits XBLA updates to just four megs, the fighter's Slightly Different Edition patch weighs in at 590 megabytes. Being granted an exception to the rule is apparently possible, though subsequently time consuming. No announcements have been made regarding an expected completion date for the whole deal.

Though dubbed Slightly Different, the patch changes an impressive number of details for each character in Skullgirls, in addition to adding further modes and UI improvements. It's also supposed to decrease load times, though the patch itself seems to be suffering from quite a long one.

Update: We were contacted by Lab Zero Games' Peter Bartholow, who clarified the situation a bit further. "We've been working with MS developer support and have managed to reduce the size of the update significantly," Bartholow said. He went on to inform us that the size of the update itself is "still in flux," but that Lab Zero is "hopeful that the size reduction will help speed up the submission process."
Skullgirls XBLA patch in limbo due to file size originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 23:59:00 EST. This would include us, we assume, especially since we found Pid to be "one of the most annoying games" of the year, with manic, frustrating difficulty spikes.

"In Pid's Easy Mode we have redesigned nearly all levels and maybe most importantly made all the boss fights shorter and more simple," Might & Delight writes on the Steam announcement. "We have studied the reviews and playthroughs on YouTube thoroughly to determine how we can create a version of the game that can be enjoyed by everyone. We have also reworked small parts of Normal Mode and the difficulty spikes that people encountered!"

The patch also allows players to change difficulty mid-game, without having to restart. Pid on, people.
Pid's 'Easy Mode' brings balance, universal enjoyment to Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 23 Dec 2012 22:30:00 EST. This brings the brutal cave exploration game more in line with designer Derek Yu's vision, which is basically a die-o-rama of ignominious, agonizing fates caused by deliberate game design.

Spelunky should be more stable once the update is applied and cease its crashing ways when you exit a level with a too-high timer, or when you get crushed during the tutorial. It's also been granted the iron constitution to properly handle the sight of you being "eaten by a worm and killed by a ghost at the same time."

You'll also be delighted to hear that choosing "Ending Adventure" in the middle of an exit will no longer cause bags to pour out of you, it says here.
Chunky Spelunky update eliminates unintended ordeals originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Dec 2012 19:00:00 EST. Various bug fixes are also bundled with the patch, tough the Snapshot version of 1.4.6 is not itself guaranteed to be bug free.

The most important part of all of this, however, is that skulls can be added to the firework formula in order to make them look like Creepers when they explode, which is ironic and wonderful, as seen above.
Minecraft 1.4.6 to add fireworks and enchanted tomes before Christmas originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 08 Dec 2012 12:00:00 EST. Xbox Support said the team would investigate the issue and release a fix soon. It appears that issue has been remedied.

The Xbox Live Status page has been updated, removing a mention of the issue and Microsoft has told Joystiq that, while there was a little issue, it has now been completely fixed. The ability to set multiple lineups for your MUT squad highlights the list of changes. Players will now be able to save up to five different lineups.

Another change coming in this week's title update is described as "more nuanced roster management," and is also geared towards Ultimate Team. Instead of breaking down roster management by offense, defense and special teams in MUT, the update sorts teams by more specific positions, such as offensive line and defensive secondary. Each roster segment will show your team's starters as well as eligible players on your bench. The Madden team is also adding a boosts screen in this update, which will display every ratings boost equipped to your team.

Among the other features being added to MUT are quick collections and the ability to play two minute quarters in the mode. Quick collections reward players that are among the first to finish a card collection in Madden Ultimate Team with special bonuses.

"What we're really striving for is aiming these title updates not just at bug fixes, but adding brand-new content so people feel like they're constantly getting a new game experience," an EA rep told Joystiq. Past title updates added server-side fantasy drafts and player editing in career mode. We've also been told that another announcement is due later this week. The bouncing care package glitch, which supposedly causes care packages to bounce wildly away from their drop location, is still being investigated and will not be corrected with this patch.
Black Ops 2 patched on 360, glitches get stitches originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Nov 2012 15:45:00 EST. Dubbed "Skullgirls: Slightly Different Edition," the patch makes a multitude of balance and gameplay changes to all characters, in addition to correcting bugs and adding new features/modes.

Amongst those new features are the addition of in-game move lists for each character, a new Tournament Mode that streamlines the user interface and menu hierarchy for tournament settings, cross-compatibility between North American and European/Australian matchmaking regions in online play, individual character tutorials and a lot more.

No date has been given for when the patch will be applied to the XBLA version of the game, though the patch notes do promise to greatly improve load times whenever that happens. We hope you marked your calendar in pencil because producer Tomoaki Ayano says the patch has been pushed back to January 29, 2013.

Word comes from the development blog, where Ayano addresses tweaks are coming to the throw system, gray-area life recovery speed and how quick combos work. Ayano doesn't go into specific details on how these systems will change, but he does say he'd like throws to be faster and may change how the life gauges shake when taking damage. Completely redefines the game!
Street Fighter X Tekken tags in big balance update Jan. 29 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 23:00:00 EST. A planned Xbox 360 and PS3 patch rivaling the game's hefty day-one patch will address both multiplayer and single-player issues - that includes a problem on the Fort Wolcott map where players would become stuck in the warm-up screen. Targeting a player with throwing knives will prevent them from contesting kills, which should cut down on cheap escapes.

On the single-player side, just about every campaign mission will see an update. Missing NPCs, objects and audio will be returned, and several mission-breaking bugs will be squashed, including a few that would get you stuck in an infinite loop of respawn and death.

The descriptions on many of these fixes stray into spoiler territory, so read up on the full list past the break below at your own risk.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed 3 patch cuts down game-breaking bugs next week

Assassin's Creed 3 patch cuts down game-breaking bugs next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 14:45:00 EST. The update should fix a number of issues, notably "abductor roof visibility problems," one of the game's more annoying headaches. Inaccessible SHIVs should also be addressed. A number of other fixes will be made as well, including better multiplayer connectivity and solutions for certain states that would make the game hang.

And some good news for XCOM beginners: Easy difficulty will be made easier. Also of note, the patch will not address an issue where players who beat the game are greeted by a defeat screen. Firaxis is aware of the issue and looking into it.

The patch is slated for all platforms "soon."
XCOM patch to solve roof visibility issues, make easy mode easier originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2012 12:00:00 EST. Take, for example, the Assassin's Creed 3 update that will be waiting for players today.

While pre-patch Desmond may have remembered being stuck at the bottom of a waterfall after jumping, a quick kick to the Animus system rectifies that memory simulation. And Connor was not nearly as loud when stealth-killing guards from behind as the still experimental Animus technology would have.

Find the full patch notes after the break; we'll warn you that some of the fixes might constitute spoilers, as they name specific missions and mention activities within them.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed 3 day-one patch clears up the past

Assassin's Creed 3 day-one patch clears up the past originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 12:30:00 EST.
