Not only are you confined to listening to the wonderful music from the Ace Attorney line through your iTunes or by actually playing the games, you can enjoy a live performance of tracks from the series of games. Chalk this up as another reason why we wish we lived in Japan.

We do have time to move over there before this goes down. The event takes place on April 20th at the Shinjuku Culture Center, where the Tokyo Philharmonic will be behind select musical tracks from the games. Hey, if there's going to be any reason why we move there, it'd be this.

See also: 2008's Biggest Blips - Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

[Via Go Nintendo]
HOLD IT! If you've been hesitant to ease yourself into this pun-infested round of laughable legalese, you'll be pleased to find a playable trial version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney embedded after the break (you'll find the code at the official site).

Once you've gotten acquainted with the new cast in this first installment built specifically for the DS, you can look forward to bailing the game out of stores on February 19th.
Continue reading Meet Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney right here, right now

Meet Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney right here, right now originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 09:30:00 EST. If you are missing out on a DS game or GBA game and don't feel like paying retail, know that Circuit City is having a huge sale right now. The problem so far has been that an entire list of the games on sale had not been available anywhere online. That is, until now.

Selling select games such as Final Fantasy IV Advance and Mario Tennis: Power Tour on the GBA, along with DS titles such as Elite Beat Agents and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (get a loved one involved) for $8.96 a piece, we're wondering if this is perhaps the biggest sale we've seen yet. So, get down to your local Circuit City and get to the stock while it still lasts.
For how much we talk about Phoenix Wright and the Ace Attorney lineup of games here at DS Fanboy, you should already know this next tidbit of info involving upcoming game Apollo Justice. In case you don't, however, then here's your warning: spoiler alert!

In the newest game, Phoenix has given up on life and resorted to being a hobo. His cap, which is pictured above, is available as a pre-order bonus for those in Japan. Definitely beats that crummy Phoenix plush we got for pre-ordering Trials and Trbulations here. Hopefully, Capcom will treat Japanese gamers a bit better than they treated us.

[Thanks, MaHe!]
Be the belle of the hobo ball with this stylish cap originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Wii)

Though its puzzles may occasionally infuriate, the real source of frustration regarding Zack & Wiki stems from the fact that nobody bought it. Every year has its share of titles that deserve an audience yet never find one, and in this regard, Zack & Wiki is easily one of the most tragic games to put an uncontrollable smile on your face. Relentlessly charming and beautifully presented, the debut of Capcom's choc-chomping pirate and his simian sidekick challenges the mind and warms that cynical, meh-spouting lump in your chest. How refreshing it was to overcome obstacles and bosses by choosing the power of the mind over an impossibly large bazooka.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Ludwig's picks of 2007

Best of the Rest: Ludwig's picks of 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 06:30:00 EST. While playing Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations, we came across this hilarious scene in which the game pokes fun at the "frothing female masses" devoted to Miles Edgeworth (which, sadly, includes this blogger). We know that they're embarrassing to admit to, since -- as you well know -- video game characters aren't real people. Yet, many of us must concede to having a video game crush at some point in our lives, and it's time to 'fess up and come clean. So, what video game characters have you had (or do you have) a crush on?
DS Daily: Video game crushes originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 09:00:00 EST. That was a pretty great deal for the Ace Attorney sequel, but recent developments in DNA testing and modern technology advancements have made it possible for the online shop to further increase its discount; Justice for All is now available for $13.99! Being one of the folks to receive their copy of Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations directly from Capcom, this blogger found himself receiving the game a month late and without the plush figure bonus that had been promised (in retrospect, however, that probably is a good thing). And, what has Capcom done to correct this? They've issued out an apology.

Other than the usual "we're sorry" stuff, Capcom has offered to ship out the plush separately to those who've pre-ordered the game before 10/29. Also, they're providing a coupon good for 10% off (code: PWthanksyou) at their online store. If you want to read the full apology, head past the break.
Great! Then spare a thought for the poor saps who preordered the title online through Capcom, and who are still waiting on their copies, despite the game being released over a month ago.

Infendo reader Andrew flagged up the problem yesterday, and it appears he's only one of many on Capcom's official message board who have been prevented from getting their law on. In fact, we can totally understand the grumpiness in this thread, especially as it took a whole month of customers ranting just to get a faintly apologetic response from a Capcom representative. Now, Capcom has chosen to appease the baying mob with -- can you guess? -- yes! A 10% off coupon for its online store! You just couldn't write it any better.

Capcom has since told Andrew his game has shipped, though there's still no word on the awesome Phoenix Wright plush that was being dangled in front of those who preordered the game. Objection indeed, Capcom.
Preordering through Capcom a Tribulation in itself originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 19:40:00 EST. We openly admit that naming your child Apollo Justice borders on cruelty and severely limits his choice of career path to either a lawyer or a cast member on a remake of American Gladiators. Thankfully, however, Capcom has subscribed to the former, with the appropriately named upstart attorney Justice taking center stage in what the math eggheads upstairs tell us is the fourth game in the Ace Attorney franchise, which will make its way to North America sometime in "early 2008" according to Capcom.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney marks a departure from previous games by abandoning Phoenix Wright, the ace attorney we have grown to know and love. Additionally, Capcom notes that the game, which has apparently been selling like hotcakes in Japan, is the first to be designed specifically for the Nintendo DS, the previous three titles originally having been released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan before getting their touchable courtroom makeovers. The game will come with a host of new characters and cases, and despite missing Phoenix (as the main character, anyway), we know we'll be yelling "Objection!" and "Hold it!" the whole time, usually to the ire of those sitting next to us on the bus.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney gets 'early 2008' release originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Nov 2007 17:25:00 EST. With it being the biggest release of the year on the DS (well .. maybe it isn't the biggest release, but it's still pretty big), we're surprised more outlets haven't tossed their pair of pennies into the ring regarding the last Ace Attorney title starring Phoenix. Seriously, where are all of the reviews? It can't still be under embargo, as it ships to retail today.

Oh well, let's all go over who has said what they thought about the game:

ZTGameDomain (85/100) likes the old friend: "Yes, it's the same, however it's not the type of same that says "Crap, I've played this damned game before"..it is more akin to a cozy familiarity."

Game Informer (83/100) says: "Knowing that the next game in this series will star a new up-and-coming defense attorney, Trials & Tribulations is a fun and fitting farewell to Phoenix and company." [Nov 2007, p.162]

Eurogamer (80/100) thinks you should play it: "It's agony not to just enthusiastically tell you about the scenarios, the cases themselves, but I hate reviewers that get to experience something completely freshly for themselves, and then rob that opportunity from all who read the review. So believe me, if I told you you'd want to play, and then be cross I told you. So just skip to the wanting to play."

Gamestyle (80/100) finds that if it isn't broke, you shouldn't fix it: "A classic case of it "if it isn't broke, don't fix it", Trials and Tribulations carries on the series' high quality and is a fitting end to the trilogy, but it won't convert anyone waiting for the series to break out of its somewhat rigid menu-driven process of elimination. That said, Gamestyle loved it and any fans of the previous games will love it too."

Well, it seems both EA and Capcom have gotten this crazy idea that people still purchase games once the holiday season is over. Joining Army of Two in the November bail-out is catastrophic courtroom comedy, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. Posting on Capcom's community forums, senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, validated his professional title with the following (under)statement: "The game is and has been finished, submitted and approved, however we felt releasing the game on the same day 112 other SKUs released was not ideal for its chances. Retail buyers agreed."

Based on the television show of the same name, Harvey Birdman follows the eponymous attorney at lawl as he bungles his way through unusual cases and awkward silences. If you're thinking gameplay amounts to Phoenix Wright with an extra dose of non sequitur oddity, you're not too far from the truth. Luckily, you have this week's superb Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations to keep you occupied until the Birdman gets on your case. Retailers currently say they'll get the thing Capcom sent them in January.

[Via Wii Fanboy]
Capcom does smart thing, delays Harvey Birdman game originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 22:00:00 EST. That's the question we're forced to ponder by a new trailer for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney from Tokyo Game Show. Here you've got this young upstart kid -- with a hairdo so terrible that Cloud Strife snickers behind his back -- claiming to be the new ace attorney ("double A" on the streets), but there's no mention of Phoenix Wright, the ace attorney we all know and love!

Maybe double As are actually like Highlanders, and the whole game will be about Phoenix and Apollo trying to track each other down and cut the other one's head off. We'd definitely play that. ... Oh, who are we kidding? We're going to be playing it anyway. Curse our love of justice!

(P.S. Capcom is bringing Harvey Birdman's courtroom fumbling to the Wii this November alongside previously announced PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable versions. Based on the Adult Swim television show of the same name, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law has players donning the law suit of the eponymous and spectacularly unskilled attorney in five "uproarious" cases. Screenshots and gameplay footage indicate a striking similarity to Capcom's other (ace) attorney at law, Phoenix Wright. That's most certainly a good thing, and since we spotted Street Fighter's Guile in the proceedings, there's always the possibility of a crazy cameo.

One thing Wii owners (or Attorn-wiis, if you can still stomach Wii puns) may object to is the $10 price difference between versions. Whereas the PS2 and PSP games are both priced at $29.99, the Wii version asks $39.99, presumably for the ability to point at menu options as opposed to scrolling through them with a directional pad. If you'd rather not pay waggle tax, the PSP and PS2 variants arrive alongside the Wii version on November 13th.

Update: Capcom says it currently costs more to publish on the Wii than it does on the other systems, hence the higher price. Waggle tax indeed.

[Via press release]
Harvey Birdman gets on Wii's case Nov. 13 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 15:40:00 EST. Looks like we've only got two this week, fan folks -- including one that was delayed from last week. Slim pickings for a short week (for those of us in the U.S., at least), but hey ... something is usually better than nothing.
PAX 07 has already shown to be a place where the costumes come out in full force, but few have been as awesome as this fellow's Phoenix Wright cosplay. Not only do you get an almost pixel perfect blue suit, you get the stylized slicked back hair and even a word balloon-on-a-stick with Wright's famous catchphrase. If they ever turn the DS game into a movie, they desperately need to hire this guy to play the titular lawyer. Objection -- over-ruled.
PAX 07: Objection!! When reader Aaron wrote in to inform us that his local Toys R Us store had volumes upon volumes of DS games, drastically reduced in price, we thought nothing more than "Oh, awesome, cheap games." This was quickly shifted toward feelings of absolute disgust, as we saw the store had way too many copies of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney on their hands.

Anyway, if you have some spare time today, you might want to hit up the bargain bin at your local Toys R Us.
Cheap games at Toys R Us originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:28:00 EST. First, our love for the ace attorney is vast and unending ... but second, and perhaps even more importantly in this instance, the "Boot to the Head" sketch by Canadian troupe The Frantics holds a special place in our childhood memories. So a mixture of the two? Pure comedic heaven.
Why? Well, the game's producer Minae Matsukawa, will be on-hand to sign autographs. If you're as obsessed with the lawyer-em-up titles as we are, then such a prospect is reason enough to attend.

Outside of that, Capcom will be bringing lots of their products to the show, apparently. Game stations with DS titles Mega Man Star Force, Mega Man ZX Advent, and Ace Attorney will also be on-hand to enjoy. And, you can even have your photo taken with Mega Man and Harvey Birdman!

While we'd like to attend, unfortunately the airlines won't let us fly with our shackles on (driving is an option, but iron shackles really kill our gas mileage). And, while we'd like to take them off, our Joystiq overlords would never allow it, for we would be free to run away as fast as we can.
Go to Comic-Con, get your Ace Attorney signed, play some games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 16:40:00 EST. Only a few scant months stand between us and the release of the next Ace Attorney game in its localized form, and believe us when we we say we are ready. It's hard to decide if the new screens (some of which are merely English versions of other screens) make the waiting better or worse, but we couldn't withhold them. That would just be mean. So make us feel good about sharing, and check out the updated gallery below.

If you missed the newer trailer a few weeks back, check it out, too. Or watch it again -- we did!
If you must dress up in costumes imitating those of video game characters, we would recommend mimicking a Phoenix Wright character. It is, of course, the natural progression from wearing a Phoenix Wright t-shirt. And if you're going to dress up in such a costume, why not do it for the benefit of the games' producer, Minae Matsukawa? Oh, right, because that would be really embarrassing.

But that's us. Maybe you're bolder and more assertive than we are-- in fact, it's basically a given that you are. Since we're too meek to do it, you should go to the San Diego Comic-Con and compete in Capcom's official Ace Attorney Cosplay Contest, judged by Matsukawa. You should also-- and this is the most important part-- take lots of pictures for us.
Turnabout Cosplay at Comic-Con originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. The point is, our beloved Phoenix Wright is out as the star, and the new kid, Apollo Justice is in. It's not the first time this has happened in a franchise, either. We're not just talking about spin-offs, like Tingle's Rosy Yet Crazy Land of Rupee Insanity, but an honest-to-goodness changing of the guard. Sometimes it doesn't last, as in Metal Gear Solid 2, and sometimes, the change is hardly noticeable, as with the parade of green-clad heroes who are forever saving princesses in the land of Hyrule. But with the Ace Attorney series and other instances, what do you think about it? Does it bother you to lose a cherished hero in favor of some johnny-come-lately?

DS Daily: Changing of the guard originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. We're slowly gathering entries for our yet-to-be-announced Phoenix Wright Shirt Makers' Club. These elite crafters have decided to express their fandom for Capcom's graphic adventure series and its characters in the most reverent way they know: by giving Phoenix Wright a place of honor on the front of a t-shirt.

The latest, from reader Maxy, goes beyond the limitations of home crafting. Maxy's sister has access to professional apparel-printing machinery at a uniform company, and transferred this iconic image of Phoenix on what looks like a 3/4 sleeve baseball shirt. Maya Fey, as pictured on the Gyakuten Saiban boxart, appears on the back. It's kind of unfair that we can't follow Maxy's example and make one of these! It may be unfair enough to warrant an OBJECTION!

No, it's just kind of unfair.
More fan-created Phoenix Wright: Ace Apparel originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 11:50:00 EST. We don't expect this deal to last for long, so race your shopping cart to the checkout lane as fast as your feet will allow.

If for some reason, God forbid, you haven't played Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney yet and are hesitant to start the series midway through, don't forget that you can also pick up a used copy at GameStop or EB Games for as low as $21.99! We admit, that's still pretty expensive for a game as old as this one, but it's better than paying full price. All you'll need to take advantage of this sorta-bargain is the coupon we posted earlier this morning.
Phoenix Wright: Sales for All originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 14:50:00 EST. We were just coming down from our adrenaline-fueled reverie over Contra 4 when this came along and OBJECTED its way into our lives. TAKE THAT!, normal heart rate! It's a trailer for Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations!

What's more, Capcom USA bloggers promise frequent updates on the official blog and in the forums! It's so nice when a company thinks about all of us non-E3-goers who just want to see some cartoon arguing.

It seems like everyone loves to make Mii versions of their favorite characters, whether they're from films, games, or television shows, and who can blame them? It's very satisfying to finish a Mii that turns out well and show it off, just to see if it's immediately recognizable. Considering that, it's no surprise that people send us lots of random characters, and often, they're Miis of characters that are just so brilliant, or from things that we love, and we can't resist them.

We dedicate this week's Mii spotlight to all the great character Miis we haven't seen yet ... and we wait with bated breath to see what else you guys can come up with after seeing this week's submissions.

We hinted in the Phoenix Wright covers post that we're completely in the thrall of the preorder bonus. Sometimes, a free thing that we don't really want will help tip the scales in favor of buying a game. We were totally going to get Gyakuten Saiban 3 anyway, but now we're feeling more pressure to get our preorder in expediently.

Have you felt this way? Are you drawn to free stuff that isn't really that great, because it's free, and because it's got pictures of characters from games you like? Does it influence your decision to purchase the game? Really cool stuff we understand, but we're talking about a 'meh' bonus that drives you to change your purchasing habits. We'll put it another way: Who's got the Pokemon stylus holder?
DS Daily: Bonus GET originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST. If you buy the Japanese Best Price release of Gyakuten Saiban 3-- cue the chorus of "don't buy it or Capcom won't localize the next one"-- you may be entitled to a set of reversible box covers for the whole series of DS releases. It looks like they're designed so you can store 2 games to a case.

However, the Gyakuten Saiban series already uses a consistent boxart design in Japan, meaning that all four of the DS games already match. And on top of that, the design for these bonuses is significantly less interesting than the original boxart. Of course, we're still getting this thing.

We wish it was nicer-looking, but it's lovely of Capcom to hand out bonus stuff in general. We hope these get included with import orders (that's right, we're ordering the import!)
Japanese Phoenix Wright 3 gets boring bonus originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 13:00:00 EST.
Anyone care to join us in a mournful, dejected "OBJECTION!"? We don't necessarily object to the release of a soundtrack CD for Gyakuten Saiban 4-- quite the opposite! We object to the Japan-only status of the release, and the similar lack of availability of its counterpart game. We haven't even heard the music from the game to know if it's worth buying, but the two US-released games have had great music. We just ... need more stuff with cartoon lawyers on it, because we love the cartoon lawyer games so much!

While we're throwing useless objections out, we'd like to register our disgust with the prices of Japanese CD's. 3150 yen ($26) is actually on the low end of CD prices.

We don't even know if that's the name yet, but it didn't stop anyone from reacting to it.

We want to see you do better. Here are the rules: the first name should be a mythological character (and not necessarily a Greek or Roman one, Anansi fans) and the last name should be a surname that has a relatively common homophone (like "Wright"/"Right"). With Trials and Tribulations headed our way soon (or the Japanese DS release of Gyakuten Saiban 3 even sooner), we're focused heavily on the next installment in the series, Gyakuten Saiban 4 -- the one without the man himself, Phoenix Wright, taking the lead as the title lawyer.

A lot of longtime fans are a little concerned about the tone of the series with this switch, but the folks at Jeux France assure us that while we may be faced with a new character (with brand new abilities!), the game is business as usual. In fact, it may even be better than usual; the preview intimates that the cases are more interesting and sport even better production than those in the earlier games, and we can't object to that.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 gets the French preview treatment originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 17:00:00 EST. We still get occasional comments from confused readers who can't decipher which Gyakuten Saiban games correlate to which Ace Attorney games. This has been especially confusing recently, as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations (based on Gyakuten Saiban 3) was announced for the US at the same time as Gyakuten Saiban 4 was being released in Japan.

4cr must have gotten similar confused comments, but, unlike us, they decided to do something about it. Well, we're doing something about it now, but it's just linking their article, which is much easier. They've written a history of the series, detailing exactly which games were ported from the GBA, and the US and Japanese titles of each game. If this is too academic, you can always buy every lawyery-looking game you see, and figure it out when you get home.
Gyakuten Saiban timeline originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. If we follow the strands of speculation like so many dots, the trail leads to Phoenix Wright and the western name for Housuke Odoroki, the new hero of Ace Attorney 4. It fits the lawyerly theme of the series, and Housuke is written with the kanji character for "law", so unless Capcom is planning a new IP (or a gigantic moon-mounted laser), it looks like we have a winner.
Objection! Don't object to our speculation, but Capcom has registered a trademark that sounds like it may have relevance in our daily lives. "Apollo Justice" ... hmm. The first name is taken from a mythological figure, one associated with law and truth, and the last name is also legal-themed. Oh, we got it-- this is the name of the next Resident Evil game.

Oh, or Ace Attorney. "Apollo Justice" would be a pretty good name for Odoroki Housuke, the protagonist of Gyakuten Saiban 4. And if that's what the trademark is for, then it's a good sign for those of us hoping for a localized version.

[Via NeoGAF]
Capcom registers "Apollo Justice" trademark originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 May 2007 14:00:00 EST.
