Platinum Games, the wordsmiths behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-rising-revengeance"><em>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>, moved its offices down <em>one entire</em> floor in Japan's Umeda Sky Building, from the ninth to the eighth, and took the opportunity to remodel its layout. The new Platinum offices have color-coded conference rooms. Personally, we like the vibe in the Red Room, probably because we can picture ourselves sitting across from Don Draper, drinking scotch on the rocks while our children grow up without us.<br />
<br />
The move keeps Platinum's open-floor layout, a library with reference books on cats and a stunning view of downtown Osaka. We'll see how the new office works out for Platinum with the release of <em>Revengeance</em>, supposedly some time this year. Since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>'s late 2009/early 2010 debut, director Hideki Kamiya has gone relatively quiet. And while he remains that way for now, it seems we may see some movement from him this year, as he told <a href="http://www.4gamer.net/games/000/G000000/20111221108/">4Gamer</a> in its big "looking back on 2011" Japanese developer feature (via <a href="http://andriasang.com/comzk3/4gamer_megafeature/">Andriasang</a>) that he "would like to announce a new game and make a comeback on the game scene and be known as more than just some guy who posts on Twitter," as his hope for 2012. Bizarrely, he didn't name a single favorite game from the last year, choosing instead to say "nothing in particular" struck his fancy, while Nintendo's eShop "3D Classics" were his favorite entertainment content last year.<br />
<br />
The feature also features a cadre of Square Enix devs, who hilariously all named <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skryim</em></a> their favorite game of the year (with the exception of a single producer), while the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/sony-confirms-uedas-departure-the-last-guardian-to-be-complete/">no longer Sony-affiliated</a> <em>Last Guardian</em> creative lead Fumito Ueda put <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/portal-2"><em>Portal 2</em></a> at the top of his list. He was also quick to point out that "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-guardian"><em>The Last Guardian</em></a> is in development, with the staff hoping to meet expectations even though with each game they taste the difficulties of creation." Okay then!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/catherine"><em>Catherine</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dark-souls"><em>Dark Souls</em></a> also got nods from a variety of devs, as did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-3d-land"><em>Super Mario 3D Land</em></a>. And hey, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/joystiq-best-of-2011">you know where we stand</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/platinums-kamiya-hoping-to-announce-his-own-game-in-2012-fumit/">Platinum's Kamiya hoping to announce his own game in 2012, Fumito Ueda loves Portal 2, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 11:45:00 EST. Once planned for January 2012, Sega announced that the brawler Anarchy Reigns has been delayed until July 3 in North America, July 6 in Europe, and July 5 in Australia.<br />
<br />
Offering a cryptic explanation for the delay in the announcement, Sega West Senior Vice President of Marketing Gary Knight suggested significant new content: "I can't reveal much now," he said, "but it's something to do with scale. Let's just say traditional one on one or two versus two fighters will be a thing of the past ..."<br />
<br />
Our guess is that Platinum is having a hard time getting back to work on this when <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-rising-revengeance"><em>Metal Gear Rising</em></a> exists.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/anarchy-reigns-reined-in-until-july-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Reigns reined in until July 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/anarchy-reigns-reined-in-until-july-2012/">Anarchy Reigns reined in until July 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 11:30:00 EST. <em>Metal Gear Solid </em>creator Hideo Kojima and Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba took the stage at Konami's offices here in Los Angeles earlier this week for a <em>mea culpa</em> of sorts: Kojima now admits that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-rising"><em>Metal Gear Solid Rising</em></a>, though it may have looked nice in the trailer back at E3 2010, just wasn't working.<br />
<br />
"In the summer of 2010, the team made a presentation for me," he recounted through a translator, "and I realized the game design still wasn't there yet." The team's vision was split between stealth and action, the idea of "cut everything" worked technically but made for gameplay that was too open-ended, and the game just wasn't fun, says Kojima. "As the young staff said to me, they wanted a good game that just felt good moving around, and we would never get that, so I decided to cancel the project."<br />
<br />
"But still, we had a lot of things" that could still be used, says Kojima. "Motion capture, a lot of good story, the view of the world inside the game, and I wanted to use that somehow. I wanted <em>Rising</em> to be born again, so that's when I decided to contact Platinum Games."<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/">Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3/ Xbox 360)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/#4672184"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/ss01-1323583729_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/#4672185"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/ss02-1323583737_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/#4672186"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/ss03-1323583742_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/#4672187"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/ss04-1323583745_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-ps3-xbox-360/#4672188"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/ss05-1323583749_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/hideo-kojima-gets-his-revengeance-with-metal-gear-rising/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hideo Kojima gets his Revengeance with Metal Gear Rising</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/hideo-kojima-gets-his-revengeance-with-metal-gear-rising/">Hideo Kojima gets his Revengeance with Metal Gear Rising</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 20:31:00 EST. We hadn't heard any official news on <em>Metal Gear Solid: Rising</em> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/metal-gear-solid-rising-to-cut-through-the-third-dimension/">over a year</a>, and then it showed up with a new name, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/11/metal-gear-risings-story-revised-now-set-post-mgs4/">new storyline</a>, and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/just-like-we-said-metal-gear-rising-revengeance-developed-by-p/">new team</a> making it. You don't have to be part of a secret cabal of world-dominating AIs to realize that there was some ... trouble somewhere in the last year. And, in fact, <em>Rising</em> had been <em>canceled</em>.<br />
<br />
The staff at Kojima Productions had the "cut anything" concept realized, according to <a href="http://andriasang.com/comzba/mg_rising_details/">Andriasang's</a> report of the latest Hideraji podcast. They also had the motion capture done and a story written ... but the rest was in the air. Without a clearer direction, Kojima decided to end development.<br />
<br />
Platinum Games studio reps happened to visit, the story goes, and expressed their excitement for the project, leading to their assignment to complete the game. It was Platinum's idea to change the story, and they also offered the concept of "a game where it feels so good to chop things up that you would die," as Andriasang translates it. We think that's a more promising concept than a game where it feels good to chop things up, and then the <em>game</em> dies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/metal-gear-rising-was-secretly-canceled-before-platinum-took-it/">Metal Gear Rising was secretly canceled before Platinum took it on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 10:26:00 EST. The newly Platinum-plated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/just-like-we-said-metal-gear-rising-revengeance-developed-by-p/"><em>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance</em></a> features a story different from the one planned for the old <em>Metal Gear Solid: Rising</em>. While the game was originally intended to take place between <em>Metal Gear Solids 2</em> and <em>4</em>, the setting has now been transfarred to a time years after MGS4. This was done in order to let Platinum "show off what they can bring to the series." Without creating a time paradox and accidentally undoing the events of <em>MGS4</em>, we suppose.<br />
<br />
Raiden joins up with private military companies for various jobs including "VIP protection, military training and other duties" as an unspecified country rebuilds from a civil war. "Little does he know that the stage is set for a clash with an enigmatic force of countless cyborgs."<br />
<br />
This information comes via the <a href="http://www.konami.jp/mgr/en_us/index.html">official site</a>, which is also the source for the new screens in our gallery. The site provides a detailed listing of staff for the title, including Platinum's Atsushi Inaba (the guy on stage with Kojima) as producer alongside Konami's Yuji Korekado. It could stand to be more detailed, as there's no <em>game director</em> listed.<br />
<br />
Konami still has some revealing to do: the site claims that a video interview titled "The Truth Behind RISING" will explain the genesis of the Platinum/Kojipro collaboration, on December 13.<br />

Konami's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-rising"><em>Metal Gear Solid: Rising</em></a> is now Platinum Game's <em>Metal Gear Rising: Reveangeance</em>, just as we were lead to believe by the trailer that leaked <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/metal-gear-rising-developed-by-platinum-games/">earlier today</a>. Raiden, apparently channeling his unstoppable child soldier roots, has gone fully cyborg ninja in order to hack, slash and grotesquely dismember every single thing that exists.<br />
<br />
We're not going to lie, the idea of taking a RAY model Metal Gear head on with a robotic lightning sword makes us tingle in very specific, covert places.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/just-like-we-said-metal-gear-rising-revengeance-developed-by-p/">Just like we said, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance developed by Platinum Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Dec 2011 22:14:00 EST. The latest trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-rising"><em>Metal Gear Solid Rising</em></a> (now totally and completely <em>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance</em>) has leaked <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=455114">onto NeoGAF</a> ahead of tonight's anticipated Spike VGA reveal, and <em>boy</em> does it ever reveal stuff, primarily that the title is being developed by the over-the-top action aficionados responsible for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/platinum-games">Platinum Games</a>. The trailer also looks much more like an actual game than previous footage we've seen from Konami in the past. We're sure more will be revealed during tonight's VGAs.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: To clarify the blatant <em>lack</em> of a trailer above this post, here's the poop: This was a leak, meaning that no one was supposed to see the trailer or glean information from its sparkly vissage until later tonight, during its official reveal at the Spike TV VGAs. If the suspense is <em>literally killing you</em>, you might be able to find a copy of it on YouTube or other streaming sites, but know that uploads we've seen have disappeared as fast as we found them. We will, of course, be posting the trailer in the highest possible quality once it is "officially" released later tonight.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/metal-gear-rising-developed-by-platinum-games/">Metal Gear Solid Rising now Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, developed by Platinum Games [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Dec 2011 16:15:00 EST. For just $14 you can be running around in a fancy suit of robot armor, blasting away at soldiers and robots. Well, not <em>you</em> physically -- we're not sure we'd trust a $14 suit of robo-armor, ourselves -- but you, controlling Sam Gideon in the Xbox 360 version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/vanquish"><em>Vanquish</em></a>.<br />

In an effort to avoid being confused with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durga_the_Hutt#Durga_the_Hutt">Durga the Hutt</a>, or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durga">Durga, The Invincible One Who Can Redeem In Situations Of Utmost Distress</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/anarchy-reigns"><em>Anarchy Reigns</em></a>' latest character distinguishes himself through his stylish tiger-themed wardrobe, his platinum blonde kitty-cat haircut, and also by having a claw-footed revolver-cannon for a leg. Overall, the effect is subtle, and we think it compliments the title's understated visual style.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-durga/">Anarchy Reigns (Durga)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-durga/#4352747"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/anarchyreigns23624durga01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-durga/#4352748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/anarchyreigns23625durga02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-durga/#4352745"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/anarchyreigns6244durgaconceptart_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-durga/#4352746"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/anarchyreigns6246durga-render_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/meet-durga-anarchy-reigns-revolver-legged-tiger-man/">Meet Durga, Anarchy Reigns' revolver-legged tiger man</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 02:30:00 EST. The characters in Anarchy Reigns aren't just running around, punching each other willy-nilly. You guys, I <em>really</em> want to like Anarchy Reigns. It's a ridiculous, over-the-top brawler and I <em>really</em> liked <em>MadWorld</em> -- like, a lot. So imagine my disappointment when I realized the only thing holding back <em>Anarchy Reigns</em> from being a whole lot of fun is the camera.<br />

Fans of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/madworld"><em>MadWorld<em> </em></em></a>may have some questions about the inclusion of Leo in <em>Anarchy Reigns</em>, but Sega isn't talking. Initially thought to be dead, it seems Leo survived and was rebuilt as a cyborg, with some sweet, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bio_Booster_Armor_Guyver">Guyver-like arm-blades</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/anarchy-reigns-trailer-re-introduces-leo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Reigns trailer (re)introduces Leo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/anarchy-reigns-trailer-re-introduces-leo/">Anarchy Reigns trailer (re)introduces Leo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 May 2011 23:00:00 EST. Talk about a mean tease. First, we spend practically all of February watching introductory videos about every human that inhabits the world of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/anarchy-reigns">Anarchy Reigns</a> -- </em>including "Weird Paul," the guy who mops up after all the murdering. Now we learn we won't actually get to slaughter any of them until January of 2012, and not, as we'd been previously told, autumn of this year.<br />
<br />
Oh cruel, cruel fate! To be so close to these people, to know them so well, but to be <em>eight months</em> from being able to cut any of them in half with a chainsaw! It'd be romantic if it weren't so darn sad.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/anarchy-reigns-forecast-now-dropping-in-january-2012/">Anarchy Reigns forecast: now dropping in January 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 May 2011 10:55:00 EST. Look, you can interpret the "story" of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a> however you wish, but there's only one definitive authority on the game: director Hideki Kamiya. Because people were uploading so many commentary and walkthrough videos, Kamiya thought he'd offer his own.<br />
<br />
So over the course of the next <em>however long it takes</em>, Kamiya will be replaying the entire game, offering his own insights and anecdotes from the game's developments on <a href="http://platinumgames.com/2011/04/27/bayonetta-developer-commentary-part-2/">the Platinum Games blog</a>. Honestly, we can't wait to hear what he has to say about that whole "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/review-bayonetta/">masturbating angel</a>" scene.<br />
<br />
You'll find the first two videos just past the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/01/hideki-kamiya-offers-director-commentary-for-bayonetta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hideki Kamiya offers director commentary for Bayonetta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/01/hideki-kamiya-offers-director-commentary-for-bayonetta/">Hideki Kamiya offers director commentary for Bayonetta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 01 May 2011 16:30:00 EST. <p>
	Though today is usually a day for press releases of the foolin' variety, Platinum Games president and CEO Tatsuya Minami is<em> deadly serious</em>. (Or <em>really deadpan</em>.) In a post on the <a href="http://platinumgames.com/2011/04/01/announcing-%E2%80%9Cplatinum-next%E2%80%9D/">Platinum blog</a>, he has outlined "Platinum Next," the company's plan to become "The Japanese Standard Bearer in Global Competition."<br />
	<br />
	Five years ago, Minami says, Platinum Games was established with a credo to "deliver smiles and surprises around the world," a goal that has been accomplished through games like <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/vanquish"><em>Vanquish</em></a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/infinite-space"><em>Infinite Space</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/welcome-to-the-internet-graveyard/"><em>Piledriver Style</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>. (Surprise! Her clothes are made of her hair!)<br />
	<br />
	Now, with Japanese game companies having "lost their vigor," Minami wants Platinum to be the new face of a renewed business. "Series grow ever-longer; original titles are on the decline," he writes. "Games with new at their core are disappearing. Japanese games that garner worldwide acclaim are slipping away." And so now, Platinum wants to do nothing less than "ignite a Japanese games revival."<br />
	<br />
	So, uh, buy <em>Anarchy Reigns</em>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/01/platinum-games-president-releases-new-company-manifesto/">Platinum Games president releases new company manifesto</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 15:40:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a>'s salacious pimp, The Black Baron, is coming to Platinum Games and Sega's latest collaboration, <em>Anarchy Reigns</em>. Here he'll be known as Blacker Baron and fight with a pair of ostentatious gold gauntlets. You can take a pimp out of the game, but you can't take the game out of the pimp, it seems.<br />
<br />
We've got some screens in the gallery below and a brief trailer introducing the latest brawler past the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-baron-blacker/">Anarchy Reigns (Baron Blacker)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-baron-blacker/#3982802"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/5534960697787e17e0f4o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-baron-blacker/#3982803"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/55355397088d2d7199cbo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-baron-blacker/#3982804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/55355401867f0955492eb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-baron-blacker/#3982805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/5535540750736535f19ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/19/anarchy-reigns-adds-another-madworld-character-to-the-roster-bl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Reigns adds another MadWorld character to the roster: Blacker Baron</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/19/anarchy-reigns-adds-another-madworld-character-to-the-roster-bl/">Anarchy Reigns adds another MadWorld character to the roster: Blacker Baron</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Mar 2011 04:27:00 EST. We don't know if any video game has ever been quite so aptly titled as Platinum Games' upcoming beat-em-up, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/anarchy-reigns">Anarchy Reigns</a></em>. After watching this madcap trailer, we can think of no better name to sum up the game -- except maybe "Mega-Death," but we're pretty sure that one's taken.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/08/anarchy-reigns-gameplay-trailer-cuts-freezes-hammers-and-cuts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Reigns gameplay trailer cuts, freezes, hammers and cuts again</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/08/anarchy-reigns-gameplay-trailer-cuts-freezes-hammers-and-cuts/">Anarchy Reigns gameplay trailer cuts, freezes, hammers and cuts again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. Want a fantastic-looking Bayonetta figure but lack model-making skills? Kyoto's <a href="http://web.kyoto-inet.or.jp/people/nimbus/mr-big/">Mr. Big</a> is happy to sell you a completed resin "garage kit" of the Platinum Games heroine for &yen;180,000 ($2,186). Too rich for your blood? Good news: You can buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/build-a-bayonetta-model-is-for-filthy-rich-hobbyists-only/">the unfinished kit</a> by itself for only $558 in Japan.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/08/payonetta-two-grand-for-a-pre-assembled-bayonetta-model/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Payonetta: Two grand for a pre-assembled Bayonetta model</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/08/payonetta-two-grand-for-a-pre-assembled-bayonetta-model/">Payonetta: Two grand for a pre-assembled Bayonetta model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 06:00:00 EST. Big Bull is the latest character to join Sega's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/anarchy-reigns"><em>Anarchy Reigns</em></a> brawler. Yes, he is a mechanical bull (technically), but you can see him in the trailer doing more than just throwing drunk co-eds off his back. His "Jet Hammer," for example, is literally a jet wielded as a hammer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/02/big-bull-joins-anarchy-reigns-sees-red/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Bull joins Anarchy Reigns, sees red</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/02/big-bull-joins-anarchy-reigns-sees-red/">Big Bull joins Anarchy Reigns, sees red</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 22:00:00 EST. As ninjas go, <em>Anarchy Reigns</em><em>'</em> Zero isn't so much stealthy and discreet as he is "killing dudes in broad daylight with swords." Granted, it's not your typical ninja's modus operandi, but evidently it gets the job done. Besides, who needs discretion when you have magical katanas?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/02/meet-anarchy-reigns-ninja-dude-zero/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Meet Anarchy Reigns' ninja dude, Zero</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/02/meet-anarchy-reigns-ninja-dude-zero/">Meet Anarchy Reigns' ninja dude, Zero</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 15:50:00 EST. After the break, you'll meet "Sasha," one of the brawler's protagonists, who uses a weapon called "Snow Spikes" to create deadly chain whips, giant javelins, and other pointy implements out of ice crystals. <br />
<br />
Also, in true <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bayonetta">Platinum Games style</a>, she dresses in <em>super tight </em>clothing. We've never had ice powers before, so we don't know if that's a necessary component or if it's unrelated. Sega will reveal more characters over the next three days, so look forward to finding out about their abilities and/or clothes.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/first-anarchy-reigns-gameplay-footage-introduces-sasha/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Anarchy Reigns gameplay footage introduces 'Sasha'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/first-anarchy-reigns-gameplay-footage-introduces-sasha/">First Anarchy Reigns gameplay footage introduces 'Sasha'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 14:30:00 EST. And ... that's about it. But at least we can now confirm that this multiplayer beat-em-up has <em>animation</em>. That's progress!<br />
<br />
In a <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/europe/2011/01/28/anarchyteaser/">blog post</a>, Sega credited some of the <em>Anarchy </em>staff responsible for said progress. Platinum co-founder and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/madworld"><em>MadWorld</em></a> producer Atsushi Inaba is again filling a producer role, while Masaki Yamanaka, who did design work on <em>RE4, God Hand</em> and <em>MadWorld</em>, is settling into the director's chair for the first time -- which, for a game director, is probably just a comfortable office chair.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/anarchy-reigns-and-sega-teases/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Reigns, and Sega teases</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/anarchy-reigns-and-sega-teases/">Anarchy Reigns, and Sega teases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 12:10:00 EST. Today, Sega announced that the game is being released this fall as <em>Anarchy Reigns,</em> on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.<br />
<br />
Anarchy Reigns "challenges the boundaries of the conventional brawler genre" with its simultaneous online multiplayer, Sega says. The announcement reveals that several different multiplayer modes will be available, including tag team and "Battle Royal, where players can challenge others in a full-on fight for victory." So it's violence as sport? Sounds a lot like <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/madworld">MadWorld</a></em> -- whose main character, <em>coincidentally</em>, appears in this game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-ps3-xbox-360/">Anarchy Reigns (PS3/Xbox 360)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-ps3-xbox-360/#3824718"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/22326anarchy-reigns-announcement-screenshot-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-ps3-xbox-360/#3824719"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/22327anarchy-reigns-announcement-screenshot-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/anarchy-reigns-ps3-xbox-360/#3824720"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/22328anarchy-reigns-announcement-screenshot-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/platinums-max-anarchy-coming-to-the-west-as-anarchy-reigns/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Platinum's 'Max Anarchy' coming to the west as 'Anarchy Reigns' this fall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/platinums-max-anarchy-coming-to-the-west-as-anarchy-reigns/">Platinum's 'Max Anarchy' coming to the west as 'Anarchy Reigns' this fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 12:40:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/platinum-creating-a-fifth-game-for-sega/">knew it was coming</a> -- now we have a name and some initial details on the fifth collaboration between Platinum Games and Sega. <em>Max Anarchy</em> has been revealed in the latest issue of Japan's Famitsu magazine, with <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/26/platinum_max_anarchy/">Andriasang reporting</a> that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title from the creators of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/vanquish">Vanquish</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta">Bayonetta</a></em> will, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/platinum-games-working-on-multiplayer-game/">as expected</a>, be their first online combat game.<br />
<br />
Famitsu's article is said to feature screenshots from the game -- which is due this year in Japan -- showing characters fighting one another using chainsaws and torches. Interestingly, Jack, the lead character from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/madworld">MadWorld</a> </em>(shown) is playable, rendered in full color as opposed to the stark black and white visual style of the developer's Wii-only title. Famitsu is promising a full interview with producer Atsushi Inaba, in which we wouldn't be surprised to learn of more cameos by other Platinum Games characters.<br />

In two years, Platinum Games has fulfilled its end of the four-game deal it inked with Sega -- with the release of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/vanquish">Vanquish</a></em> this past October, the all-star development studio completed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/sega-announces-platinum-games-partnership-first-three-games/">its contractual run</a>. It appears that the publisher still values the relationship, as executive VP of sales and marketing for Sega, Alan Pritchard, told <em>Game Informer</em> in a recent interview that another title is in the works from Platinum Games, with Sega as publisher.<br />
<br />
"We have a further title to announce from Platinum Games as well," Pritchard teased, speaking to the publisher's upcoming lineup. Assuming that Platinum isn't working on another new IP or one of Sega's existing franchises, it's choices for a sequel may be limited. <br />
<br />
Given Pritchard's admission that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/madworld">MadWorld</a></em> was a financial miss for both parties, it's probably unrealistic to expect a follow-up to that one. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta">Bayonetta</a></em>, however, sold <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/mario-sonic-and-profits-in-segas-fiscal-2010/">over a million copies</a> and stands out as the only big success to come from Platinum's four-game run. Last we heard, Sega was "reasonably encouraged" by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/sega-reasonably-encouraged-by-day-one-vanquish-sales/">early sales</a> of <em>Vanquish</em>.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/platinum-creating-a-fifth-game-for-sega/">Platinum creating a fifth game for Sega</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 10:55:00 EST. Instead of cigar-chompin' soldier Sam Gideon inside the suit, the original concept had the suit as a robot, remotely controlled by three different pilots. This was even before the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/vanquish-almost-had-a-robotic-canine-companion/">robodog idea</a>.<br />
<br />
"The robot would change forms according to the pilot in charge," Mikami explained, "as each pilot had been specially trained in areas such as shooting, melee, or hover and snipe." The idea "died a quick death," but Mikami noted that he still likes it, and that ideas are "never out of bounds," sometimes appearing in sequels or other new game designs. "I don't know what I will be making next, but considering how fickle I am, it will probably end up being a game completely different from <em>Vanquish</em>." At the very least, he knows it'll be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/03/mikami-making-aaa-title-for-bethesda-will-be-his-last-as-direct/">triple-A game for THQ</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/vanquishs-original-concept-included-remote-pilots/">Vanquish's original concept included remote pilots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 19:00:00 EST. As ludicrous as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a> is, it was actually much tamer prior to launch. Platinum Games has released some pre-production B-roll, revealing the title's initial menus and gameplay -- specifically of note about the latter is how slow the game was and how much inappropriate slowdown it once employed.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/what-bayonetta-looked-like-before-it-was-finished/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What Bayonetta looked like before it was finished</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/what-bayonetta-looked-like-before-it-was-finished/">What Bayonetta looked like before it was finished</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 01:00:00 EST. "It's been in the marketplace for two days," Hayes said. "We've seen the day one numbers and we're reasonably encouraged, but I think we need to see the rest of week one and probably week two just to see how it's going to play out." He also noted that the new IP faces tough competition from established franchises (like <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>, which launched the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/18/now-playing-october-18-24-2010/">same day</a>).<br />
<br />
"Reasonably encouraged" from a game company executive is <em>reasonably</em> troubling for our estimation of <em>Vanquish</em>'s fortunes. We tend to expect publishers to <em>overhype</em> their games' success. If "reasonably encouraged" is Sega's spin, that's not great news for fans of Shinji Mikami's unique brand of smoking, shooting action. Though, of course, that's better than "disappointed," "humiliated," or "driven out of business."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/sega-reasonably-encouraged-by-day-one-vanquish-sales/">Sega 'reasonably encouraged' by day-one Vanquish sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. This week's launch of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/vanquish">Vanquish</a></em> not only portends the imminent demise of thousands of robots, but represents the final shot in Sega's four-game publishing deal with Platinum Games. Speaking to <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/features/1025/Interview-Atsushi-Inaba">Develop</a>, Platinum's executive director, Atsushi Inaba, reflected on the agreement -- encompassing <em>Bayonetta</em>, <em>Madworld</em>, <em>Infinite Space</em> and <em>Vanquish</em> -- and the incentives offered by Sega. <br />
<br />
"When we created Platinum Games, we of course talked to a lot of publishers, and Sega offered us the most freedom to develop games, he said. "I think the partnership has been great, and I'm really grateful for their support." Inaba considers the exchange, with ownership of four properties going towards creative freedom, a "fair deal." But what happens next? "For the future of our partnership, of course, it's not something that we alone can decide," Inaba said. "Sega has its stance, and we have ours, but if Sega asks us to make something we might take the offer."<br />
<br />
Although Platinum has nothing "against the idea of making sequels," Inaba added, the company's long-term goal is to create new IP and retain ownership of it. "So as a studio we would like to do both [new IP and sequels], but the whole point of Platinum Games is to create our own IP, that's what we do."<br />
<br />
With Platinum still growing and readjusting its relationship with Sega, the developer's critical acclaim will be compared to its uneven sales performance in any discussion. Selling over a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/mario-sonic-and-profits-in-segas-fiscal-2010/">million copies</a>, <em>Bayonetta</em> has undoubtedly been the studio's biggest success thus far. If Sega intends to ask for a sequel, it'll know witch.<br />

You know how we're always saying how great it would be if someone could just make a modern, polygonal version of one of our favorite 2D classics, yet they seldom, if ever, turn out good? Well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/vanquish"><em>Vanquish</em></a> isn't a rebirth of any existing action franchise, but it is what a younger me dreamed a game like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWMyoNhGHbk"><em>Contra</em></a> would be like ... <em>in the future</em>. The work of <em>Resident Evil </em>creator <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shinji-mikami">Shinji Mikami</a> and Platinum Games (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/review-bayonetta/"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>), it brings the classic, run-and-gun feel of games like Konami's classic into the HD era with a plot that doesn't really matter, characters who spout ridiculous one-liners and -- oh yeah -- action that will have you on the edge of your seat from explosive start to thunderous finish.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/">Vanquish</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/#2768673"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/vanquish001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/#2768674"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/vanquish002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/#2768675"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/vanquish003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/#2768676"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/vanquish004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vanquish-360-ps3/#2768677"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/vanquish005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/19/vanquish-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Vanquish review: Smokin'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/19/vanquish-review/">Vanquish review: Smokin'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 13:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Another <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/vanquish"><em>Vanquish</em></a> trailer has come rocket-sliding out of Platinum Games, this time focusing on the A.R.S. Man, remember that Kmart <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiiuajT3YLg&amp;NR=1">ad campaign</a> featuring Rosie O' Donnell and Penny Marshall?
