After being taken offline last July, the PlayStation Store will finally reopen for business on South Korean PlayStation 3 units on Thursday, May 16. The service was originally removed to comply with new South Korean legislation that made it illegal for persons under the age of 18 to verify online accounts with their real name or age.

As a result, use of the PlayStation Store is now restricted to users 18 and older, regardless of whether the service is actually being used to buy something. As an apology to all users affected by the months-long outage, Sony Computer Entertainment Korea is gifting all eligible users one free month of PlayStation Plus.
PSA: PlayStation Store returns to South Korean PS3s May 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 04 May 2013 10:30:00 EST. That was later patched to work on Vita and PSP, but only when transferred from PS3. Now, it is finally being added to the store on those platforms.

PSOne Classics on Vita can be kind of complicated.
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment downloadable on Vita and PSP March 12 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 19:15:00 EST. According to CNET, who spoke to Sony Network Entertainment chief operating officer Shawn Layden, the SEN store will ultimately let users buy content there and then set it to be automatically downloaded to their PS3s.

The SEN store, which allows users to buy PS3 and Vita content via a browser, launched very quietly last month in Europe, with Sony eventually saying the store is being tested there. As it currently stands, content bought via the SEN store appears on Vita and PS3 download lists, but cannot be automatically downloaded to those devices via the web-based store.
Sony aims for US web PS Store launch this month, automatic downloads in the works originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jan 2013 11:30:00 EST. We've confirmed the store is accessible in certain European regions, including the UK, but it's not available in the United States or Canada as yet. Approached for comment, a Sony Computer Entertainment UK rep told us, "We are testing a new web store, which we look forward to announcing and launching to the PlayStation/Sony community shortly."

The SEN store offers a slick black look in line with the redesigned PS Store. Content can be filtered by platforms, genre, type (games, add-ons, demos etc.) and release date, and then further filtered by things like price range and required accessories. Much like the Xbox Live Marketplace via Xbox.com, purchases made via the web store then appear on download lists of compatible Sony devices, a process we verified on both PS3 and Vita. However, unlike with Xbox.com, purchases cannot be set to automatically download.

Sony converted PSN accounts into SEN ones earlier this year, a move clearly intended to give its online content a more universal umbrella. That changeover surely reached its logical conclusion this morning, one will that evermore save us from finding out about a cracking PSN deal and then being forced to boot up and navigate our PS3s and Vitas to actually purchase it.

[Thanks, Simon!]
Sony launches web store for PSN content, only in Europe for now originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 09:00:00 EST. Slightly dearer are Resistance: Burning Skies, Smart As, and Unit 13, all coming in at $26.99. Finally, as of next week Uncharted: Golden Abyss sets you back $35.99. Speaking to GamesIndustry International, a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson said, "Our last quarter was the biggest in terms of transactional sales in PSN's six-year history." Speaking to Joystiq, a SCEA spokeperson expanded upon that statement:

"Transactional sales refer to PlayStation Store sales through the PSN/SEN Wallet. Our last quarter (July - September 2012) was our 'biggest' on a global basis with regard to revenue."

So, PSN is apparently on the up, with Sony claiming 97 percent customer satisfaction for the service along with 93 percent renewal intent. The company says the success of PlayStation Plus is driving PSN sales.

Having been around for over two years, PlayStation Plus membership sales almost doubled this summer following the announcement of the Instant Game Collection. Sony is still keeping quiet about specific subscriber numbers, but it sounds like PS Plus is proving to be a significant addition to the PlayStation arsenal.
PSN posts best ever revenue for second quarter in a row originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 21:00:00 EST. Sony hopes to resume PSN service sometime this year. The available Vita games mirror those already available in meatspace from GameStop and online via PS3 (Hot Shots Golf, ModNation Racers, Super Stardust, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048), while the PSP games and video content mirror the other PS Store content.

We also managed to get an online game going with Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, so it looks like at least some of the online infrastructure is now live (the game was directly between two Vitas over the internet, but we had issues searching for public lobbies). If you're one of the lucky few within the US who already has a Vita, now would be a good time to claim an extremely limited opportunity at topping the leaderboards, not to mention beating us handily at UMvC3.

[Image above features Japanese PS Vita Store]
US PlayStation Vita now able to access PlayStation Store (if you have one) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST. The selection of early, hidden releases includes Uncharted: Golden Abyss (which is not discounted at all at $49.99), Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational for $35.99, Wipeout 2048 for $35.99, ModNation Racers Road Trip for $26.99, and the PSN-only Super Stardust Delta for $9.99.

Sure, you probably don't have a Vita yet, but don't let that stop you from building up a library.
The PlayStation Vita's interface shows a strong iPhone influence, from its touch-only navigation to its stylized unlock screen. In the above video, I provide a quick overview of the UI and touch interface the new handheld system uses, including its multitasking capabilities and "LiveArea" loading screens.

I also lie, a bit -- after recording the video, I discovered the obvious fact that you can rearrange your icons, simply by holding a finger on the screen for a few seconds. Just slightly longer than I did in the video. Again, just like an iPhone. From there, you can move or delete items, or change the color of the background. Apologies for the error in the video.

After the break, in another video, I use a quick jaunt to the PlayStation Store to demonstrate the background downloading features. I didn't go too in-depth into the PS Store because it's basically lists of Japanese text at this point.

Finally, you can see the unskippable introductory video that greets every new Vita user upon starting up the system for the first time.
Continue reading PS Vita's interface, background downloading, and Getting Started video

PS Vita's interface, background downloading, and Getting Started video originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 18:30:00 EST. The PlayStation Blog has posted PSN's top-selling indie games of 2011, with Limbo and PixelJunk Shooter 2 topping the third-party self-published and Sony-published lists, respectively. Big Sandwich Games' Hoard flies above the list of indies sponsored by Sony's Pub Fund.

Asked if the lists are skewed by free PlayStation Plus or "Welcome Back" content, a Sony representative told Joystiq, "The list includes all paid downloads, including Plus, but excludes free Plus content."
Couldn't bother to shell out $14.99 for WayForward's delightful, 2D action-platformer Bloodrayne: Betrayal? What if we knocked three bucks clean off that price? Well, not us, so much as Sony, who is doing just that for one week on the PlayStation Store.
Continue reading Bloodrayne: Betrayal gets a temporary price cut on PSN

Bloodrayne: Betrayal gets a temporary price cut on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 16:43:00 EST. Sony's PlayStation Suite cross-platform initiative continues its gradual, piecemeal rollout, with the arrival of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation Certified devices -- a category that, as of this moment, includes the Sony Tablet S and nothing else. Eventually, it'll include the Sony Tablet P, other Android devices, and the PlayStation Vita (which will, of course, have access to the normal PlayStation Store as well).

And before you get your hopes up about seeing what kind of new cross-platform experiences PlayStation Suite can provide, it's just PSOne Classics right now. Tablet S owners have a selection of ten PSOne games, for $5.99 each, including Cool Boarders, Hot Shots Golf 2, and, oh hey, Jumping Flash!
Continue reading PlayStation Store available for the one PlayStation Certified tablet

PlayStation Store available for the one PlayStation Certified tablet originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 13:15:00 EST. When it comes to release dates pertaining to the Gran Turismo series, fans know better than to expect developer Polyphony Digital to actually meet those deadlines. It should come as no surprise, then, that Gran Turismo 5's first big DLC release, originally intended to launch on October 18, will now be drifting to October 25 in North America.

As previously explained, the DLC can either be purchased in one big $11.99 bundle, or piecemeal as tracks, cars, racing gear, and paint jobs. Sony apologized for the delay but didn't provide a reason for it. Instead, the company will include a "special bonus" with the DLC on October 25, so you've got that going for you.
Gran Turismo 5 DLC delayed to October 25 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 12:20:00 EST. ASCII magazine spoke to an unnamed Sony Computer Entertainment representative about some concerns about the PlayStation Vita. One of those concerns involved downloads over the Vita's optional 3G connection. The good news: you can still download things from the PlayStation Store when using the 3G connection in Vitas that support it.

The bad news is that, at launch at least, 3G file downloading is limited to 20MB or under. You'll therefore be downloading Minis or (real talk) system updates, but not full retail games while you're away from wi-fi. The representative specified that this was the case at launch, and the limits could change in the future.

The rep also addressed the odd proprietary memory card. As of now, there are currently no plans to use the format in any other devices. It sounds like Sony's not trying to push a new media format like it did the Blu-Ray -- this is really about making you buy one more memory card.
Vita downloads limited to 20MB over 3G at launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 12:04:00 EST.
An extremely specialized app is available on PS3 today, only to PlayStation Plus users. "Video Unlimited - Preview" is a new interface for browsing the video content available on the PlayStation Store.

You can now browse through genres or various other groupings -- some shown in the video include lists of movies by actor, studio, series, and even setting. The new app also allows searching of these various categories.

It certainly looks much easier than browsing the PS Store for movies. We don't have long to wonder why Sony would restrict use of an app that makes it easier for people to buy things to Plus members, as it'll be open to all on October 11.
PS3's 'Video Unlimited Preview' app streamlines movie browsing originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 10:45:00 EST. There's a number of high-profile releases in today's PS3 European content update, including Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online and a demo for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. Sadly, the PSP has almost nothing new this week -- an issue Sony hopes to correct by drowning us all in dozens of discounts on PSP downloadables.
The latest PSN update is a few hours tardy, but it's not completely without its charms. Fans of old, old games can grab Medal of Honor Frontline for $15, and Breath of Fire IV from the PSOne Classics storefront for $6. If you prefer something a tad less ancient, there's also a multiplayer demo for Driver: San Francisco in the mix.
The European PlayStation Blog reports that the region's PSN will be down this Thursday, August 11, for maintenance. The service is slated to be down from 4:05pm through 2:00am BST Friday morning. PSN account management and registration will be offline during the maintenance, as will the PlayStation Store. The blog advises those who wish to play online to sign into PSN before the maintenance begins.

We suggest you use the downtime to reflect upon firmware 3.7.
Euro PSN down for maintenance tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. An upcoming PS3 firmware update will enable automatic syncing of Trophies to a player's online profile. Before everyone gets too excited, know that the feature is reserved exclusively to PlayStation Plus members. Another PlayStation Plus bonus: automatic online game saves will now be enabled. Upon first playing a game, players will be asked whether or not to enable automatic online saves for that specific title (otherwise, they can enable it from the XMB later).

In the category of "everyone else," the update will add a new recommendation feature that will allow users to recommend specific PlayStation Store content to friends. A new "TV/Video Services" section will also be added to the XMB. The new category will house online video services like Hulu and Netflix. Videos purchased from the PlayStation Store, however, will still be found in the same "Video" section of the XMB.

A handful of updates are also being added to allow for expanded capabilities when watching 3D Blu-ray movies as well.

Firmware 3.7 is scheduled to launch "soon," so stay tuned.
PS3 firmware 3.7 brings auto cloud saves and Trophy sync (for PS Plus members) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 21:15:00 EST. The next set of bonuses coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers should tickle fans of old-school beat-em'-ups, as well as fans of egregious misspellings. The latest Sega title to serve as an incentive for the premium program is Comix Zone, the 1995 Genesis brawler that was notable for its clever comic-panel backdrop, as well as its inclusion of "Sketch Turner," the worst-named character in the history of written language.

The game will be free for Plus members (and only Plus members) starting August 9, alongside a free DLC pack for Crash Commando and a trial for Far Cry 2. Based on the timing of the past Sega PSN releases, we'd wager Comix Zone will be available for the hoi polloi about one month later.
Comix Zone coming early and free to PlayStation Plussers next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 22:45:00 EST. You may be enjoying WWE All-Stars, but your copy of the game doesn't have all the stars. This week, you can address that shortfall by downloading the new DLC, "Southern Charisma Pack."

For 240 Microsoft Points or $2.99 on PSN, you can add Big Boss Man, Michael "PS" Hayes, and "World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry to the game, all complete with the game's outsized style. That's ... more stars, even if it doesn't quite hit the goal of "all." Maybe we're being too strict about this.
Continue reading WWE All-Stars DLC adds some 'Southern Charisma'

WWE All-Stars DLC adds some 'Southern Charisma' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 12:30:00 EST. The North American PSN features a PSOne Imports store, to sell previously Japan-exclusive games digitally. SCEE is expanding the idea for the European PS Store, announcing an initiative to publish US and Japanese games in that region. No titles have been announced yet.

Publishers of US/Japanese games can now apply to release their PSOne games on the European store, in an "as is" format -- meaning no additional localization. "This also means that if a PAL version of a title has been unable to pass QA in SCEE, but the NTSC version is already available on the PlayStation Store in SCEA or SCEJ," said SCEE PS Store rep Rich McGrath, "we can look at publishing that version instead." As long as it gets through the ratings boards, that is.
Japanese, American import PSOne games coming to Euro PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. Sony has launched its second digital PlayStation Store in Latin America, in beautiful Brazil. Following Mexico, Brazil now has access to 200 items of first- and third-party digital content, including Assassin's Creed II and the demo for LittleBigPlanet2. Sony is also extending the Welcome Back program to Brazil, offering two PS3 and two PSP titles to everyone affected by the hacking blackout, through August 21. Sony also established a PlayStation Blog and PlayStation Website for its users in Brazil.
PlayStation launches digital store in Brazil originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 19:30:00 EST. We know our first instinct upon finding the PlayStation Store down would be to freak out and shred our credit cards. That's why it's important that you know this ahead of time -- the Store will be down today from 9AM-11AM PST (12PM-2PM EST). It's Sony's own doing, not the work of any lulz-motivated cabal. Sony says that other PSN functions won't be affected by the Store outage.

Timegate's undeniably beefy multiplayer-centric shooter, Section 8: Prejudice, has been racking up kills on Xbox Live Arcade since late April. In a little under two weeks, PS3 owners will get to see what all the fuss is about (hint: skydiving), as PlayStation Blog just announced the downloadable, $15 title will touch down on PSN July 26 in North America, and July 27 in Europe.

To help jump-start the community's growth on the new platform, Timegate is handing out the Blitz Armor Pack and Overdrive Map Pack to anyone who grabs the game during its first week on PSN. What's more, the first 1,000 PlayStation Plus users to download the title will receive in-game Hunter Armor, as well as a free download of the original Section 8. You're essentially doubling your bang for your buck, and by "bang," we mean "whoosh," because that's the sound you make when you're skydiving.
Section 8: Prejudice diving into PlayStation Store July 26 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST. Deadliest Warrior: Legends may be old (spiked) hat for Xbox 360 owners, but for those of us with access only to a PS3, the game has yet to arrive. That's all about to change, as 345 Games tells Joystiq that its latest release will head to the PlayStation Network Store on July 26, pointy blade-equipped staff and all.

Like its XBLA launch, Deadliest Warrior: Legends will run you $10 when it arrives in the coming weeks. No explanation was offered for the disparity in launch between 360 and PS3, but we're told Sun Tzu sends his sincerest apologies.
Deadliest Warrior: Legends to pulverize PSN on July 26 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:40:00 EST. Good news for those of us waiting to log into our Japanese PSN accounts and pick up more freebies! Oh, and also for people who actually live in Japan. Sony has finally straightened out all the issues holding back the relaunch of the PlayStation Store there, and will fully reactivate the store, Qriocity, and all other inactive services on July 6.

Japan is the last region to be reactivated, according to Sony; thus, with the renewal of all of the PSN services, Sony can now claim that the PSN is back. And we can soon claim our copy of Echochrome.
PlayStation Store returns to Japan July 6 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jul 2011 12:45:00 EST. Today's PSN update marks the beginning of the PlayStation Plus-exclusive Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta. However, PlayStation Plus membership was offered as part of the "Welcome Back" package, meaning the "exclusive" beta is not so exclusive. In fact, it's essentially open to everyone using the PS Store (if they've activated those free memberships -- you only have until July 3 to do so), so there will be a lot of people rushing to download the beta.

Basically, what we're saying is that something given away after a PSN outage is about to knock the PSN out again, jeopardizing your ability to get Beyond Good and Evil HD. Check out all the DLC for this week after the break.

This week's European PSN update was something of a light week for new releases -- fortunately, Sony has come through with a mid-week update which exclusively features discounts on downloadable content from a few major publishers. Afte arriving exclusively on the Xbox 360 back in May (per previous agreements) and on PC yesterday, Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC "Escalation" is now getting the PS3 treatment on June 10. Beyond the four regular mutliplayer maps it adds, the much loved "Call of the Dead" level -- starring a quartet of movie stars -- is also included.

Like the PC launch before it, when the DLC arrives on PlayStation 3 next week, it'll spark a double XP outbreak all weekend on PlayStation Network. No official pricing was given in the release date announcement, but we don't imagine it'll be magically less expensive than the $15 asking price on Xbox 360 and Steam.
Update: An Activision rep confirmed to us that the PS3 release will be "consistent with previous Escalation pack pricing."
Continue reading COD: Black Ops 'Escalation' DLC bringing Hollywood's zombies to PS3 on June 10

COD: Black Ops 'Escalation' DLC bringing Hollywood's zombies to PS3 on June 10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 14:30:00 EST. Sony is currently rolling out the content previously detailed in its "Welcome Back" package in North America. A post on the US PlayStation Blog details as much, and dishes out a lengthy FAQ on the offerings. First and foremost, if you weren't a PlayStation Network user before April 20, 2011, you're out of luck.

For the rest of us, PS3 owners can choose two free games from a list of five, while PSP owners can choose two free games from a list of four. To do so, head to the PlayStation Store and then to the "Welcome Back" area where you'll see the selection of titles (seen above).

There's also a new free version of PlayStation Plus, which is the one free month everyone gets as part of the "Welcome Back" program.

And finally, the promised free "On Us" films are also currently being offered, and will remain so throughout the coming weekend. You'll have one month to grab your free games and other content, as the Welcome Back tab will disappear after July 3, 2011.

PlayStation Plus users will automatically have 60 extra days added to their subscriptions, Sony says. And though no details have yet been provided, "posts over the coming days" will apparently explain how the past month of missing content will be added to PSN.

Update: The European "Welcome Back" content is now also rolling out, according to the EU PlayStation Blog.

Update 2: As you might expect, things are a tad bumpy (especially on the PSP side of things, which isn't even showing a "Welcome Back" option for us), so maybe waiting an hour or two would be a good idea.

Update 3: If you can't get your free games even though you used to be able to see them, we've got the fix from the EU PS Blog after the break!
Continue reading PlayStation Network's 'Welcome Back' content now available

PlayStation Network's 'Welcome Back' content now available originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 12:55:00 EST.
