The PlayStation Move-powered "In Motion" expansion for Portal 2 received a free batch of DLC today on the PlayStation 3, developer Sixense Studios announced. In Motion owners can immediately access the new content by installing a patch released today on the PlayStation Network.

Sixense's "Non-Emotional Manipulation" DLC adds a co-op campaign to In Motion, allowing two players (using two PlayStation Move controllers) to team up in split-screen or online cooperative modes. Cross-play with PC players via the Portal 2 MotionPack is also supported. A patch released last year added PlayStation Move support to Portal 2's core campaign and co-op levels, though Move-specific gameplay mechanics such as Portal Surfing and Scaling are exclusive to Sixense's expansion.

Both Portal 2 and the In Motion expansion are currently on sale for 20 percent off in the PlayStation Store. PlayStation Plus members get an additional 40 percent discount off the sale price.
Free Portal 2 In Motion co-op DLC out today on PlayStation 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Jun 2013 16:15:00 EST. ThreeA revealed the prototypes for Atlus and P-Body last year, as smooth, gray statuettes. Now, the figures have a dinged-up coat of paint and classy lens details, along with a pair of Portal guns, and they're looking fly.

ThreeA showed off the new prototypes during an event in Taiwan, as spotted and photographed by Tomopop. It's still unclear if Atlas and P-Body will include any LEDs or flashier add-ons, or when they'll be available for collectible consumption.

In other video game toy news, ThreeA announced a partnership with Capcom to make mecha figures straight out of Lost Planet. Furthermore, we wondered how Valve would feel about such flagrant counterfeiting; we know it doesn't own Ellen McLain's voice or anything, but come on.

None of that is actually an issue, as it turns out, since del Toro actually obtained permission from Valve to use GlaDOS' voice in the film, according to the Toronto Sun. "I wanted very much to have her, because I'm a big Portal fan," del Toro said. "But just as a wink. She's not cake-obsessed."

McLain's vocal work in the actual film will be run through fewer GlaDOS-inducing voice filters in the final film, del Toro says, but he wanted her voice to be completely recognizable in the trailer. It's also worth noting that there's no actual crossover between Valve's Portal/Half Life universe and Pacific Rim's, even though Pacific Rim is a movie about universes crossing over.
Del Toro got Valve's permission to use GlaDOS' voice in Pacific Rim originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 Jan 2013 12:30:00 EST. Valve's patch notes say split-screen co-op is accessed by pressing X on the second controller in the first co-op menu.

The patch also fixed a couple of minor errors, including not being able to exit the Robot Enrichment or Create Test Chambers menus with the controller. We at the Joystiq Enrichment Center would like to remind you that any inability to exit Joystiq is perfectly regular, and your enforced presence on our website is most appreciated.
Portal 2 gets split-screen and Big Picture support on Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Nov 2012 10:15:00 EST. The floating Companion Cube effect was accomplished by ripping out the magnets in a floating globe, and the cube itself was created to proper size and weight specifications.

The gun itself is not custom, however - it's store bought. The process of creating the Companion Cube and applying the magnetic housing to the Portal gun itself is pretty interesting, all of which you can check out in the video above and through the source link below.
Hackaday's custom Portal gun levitates a Companion Cube originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. Well, it could have gotten stranger - even stranger than Cave Johnson trapped in a computer - as Valve writer Eric Wolpaw revealed during a PAX panel. Wolpaw told the audience that, originally, Chell was going to marry a turret during Portal 2.

Chell was supposed to discover a lost tribe of turrets, help them out and eventually be married to one by the Animal King turret. After this, the turret would follow Chell, according to Game Informer, "in a similar fashion to Watson in Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis."

And that brings us to the sole reason for writing this post: An opportunity to post the Creepy Watson video after the break. For added fun, imagine that Watson is a turret.
Continue reading Chell nearly married a turret in Portal 2

Chell nearly married a turret in Portal 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 01:30:00 EST. Look down." Cave's personality was trapped in a computer and he begged to be unplugged, while players found use in his hardware and had to push him against a wall to jump on a ledge.

In the end, the gameplay didn't fly and the scene - and story arc featuring Cave in a computer - was removed entirely. We like to think that means Cave got his wish, and he's not still trapped inside a box, screaming about lemons and plugs.
How Cave Johnson's talking head got cut from Portal 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. Valve has added co-op to the Perpetual Testing Initiative - the company's fancy name for the hit game's level creator. Meaning, armchair designers can now publish co-op maps for users to consume.

Valve has also added a "Quick Play" feature that creates a "never-ending, auto-generated" playlist of the highest rated user-developed maps. "It has literally never been easier to figuratively jump in and literally play some Portal," the wordsmiths at Valve claim.

As an added treat, Valve is offering current owners of Portal 2 a 75% off coupon for a second copy of the game. Just the thing you'll need to get a friend in on the action. Who are we giving out copy to? American astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson, of course! He knows a thing or two about intricate bodies of work. Kind of.

An anonymous tech at NASA got away with laser-engraving the above image of Wheatley with the quote "In spaaaaaaace!" on the Japanese HTV-3 resupply craft to the ISS. Wheatley and the craft are set to launch on Friday, July 27, at 10:06 EST. You can watch the launch beginning at 9:15 EST on Friday at the NASA TV website.

"NASA in no way officially endorses secretly laser-engraving characters from Portal onto their spacecraft," the Portal 2 blog writes. "Believe it or not, they don't even officially endorse Portal 2, despite the fact that it's a really excellent game." But someone (or some robot) at NASA obviously respects quality entertainment.

Update: As many readers have pointed out, the image is likely not referring to Wheatley as the official Portal 2 blog states, but probably referring to Portal 2's "space core" instead. Go get yourself an ice cream sundae, champ. You deserve it.

The Portal-themed Lego set has received 10,000 votes of support on Lego's crowd-sourced idea incubator, Cuusoo, and is now off to be examined by the proper authorities. A "Lego jury" will review the idea, building concept models and testing them for playability, safety and fit with the Lego brand. Lego's Cuusoo quarterly review begins in September and will include the Portal set and any others that reach 10,000 votes. Reviews can, we should warn you, take several months.
Portal 2 Lego set reaches support goal, is off to review by 'Lego jury' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 19:00:00 EST. The company's hypothesis is that it will, and we tend to agree.

In order to get one of NECA's official Portal 2 Chell Jumpsuits (in women's and men's sizes) from ThinkGeek, you need to get on a mailing list. ThinkGeek will alert its "Test Subjects" about the product's availability when it arrives in October. This is the only way the retailer plans to sell these, so if you want that testy look go sign up now.

Pre-orders are available from a variety of other retailers, some of which have their own restrictions - like only offering reservations during the weekend of Comic-Con (i.e. now). Xbox Live has the answer, as Portal 2 is now available on Games on Demand, according to Major Nelson.

Apart from GLaDOS and Wheatley's intrusion of Xbox Live, there are some pretty substantial sales going on. This week, a load of Bethesda DLC is 50 percent off, including the "Shivering Isles" and "Knights of the Nine" expansions for Oblivion and every piece of Fallout 3 DLC. Several Xbox Live Arcade games are 50 percent off as well this week, including Section 8: Prejudice, The Splatters, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, Hydrophobia and the excellent Toy Soldiers: Cold War.
Portal 2 goes Games on Demand, 50% off sales abound on Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 11:50:00 EST. That may sound like the obvious and desired result, but what if you, in your capacity as a malevolent and cunning artificial intelligence, want to keep a single test subject alive while the rest asphyxiate horribly?

Costume artist Two Horns United may have found a solution to this classic scientific dilemma with his custom built Aperture Science Portal Gun Gas Mask. While the inner workings of the mask's machinations are not fully explained, we assume it uses portal technology to funnel clean, breathable air into your squishy human test subject's dreadfully inefficient lungs. Since the DLC's release on May 8, the company reports that over 35,000 user-created maps have been uploaded, which have been downloaded over 1.3 million times.

To celebrate this successful experiment, Valve has discounted several items on Steam, including, of course, Portal 2, which costs just $6.79 right now! Fellow Steam Workshop title Skyrim is on sale for $40.19, and several Workshop items within Team Fortress 2 can be found for 50 percent off.
Continue reading Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative success leads to Workshop sale

Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative success leads to Workshop sale originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. The turret tracks the position of a specific pink shirt and asks innocently after potential victims if it goes without stimulation for too long, eventually locking on and shooting foam darts at the rosy intruder.

We say it's pretty impressive in the sense that we want a dozen and we're astounded at the level of detail and care put into such a project, but at first we read the title too quickly and thought this guy had created working portals, which would be way cooler. The lesson here: However awesome your final university project may be, the things we make up in our heads will forever be more awesome. Sorry, dude.

We'll still take 12 of those turrets. The Perpetual Testing Initiative offers players a map-editing tool, which looks a lot like this, so fans can make testing chambers to rival GLaDOS'. And make maps shaped like penises, probably.

The map editor in today's DLC is accessible for new players, yet robust enough to satisfy hardcore ones, Valve tells NeoGamr. Valve's first attempt at fan-made maps, the Hammer editor, is tech-heavy and complicated for most people to get a hang of, most likely because it's Valve's in-house map creation tool - still, players have created more than 400 maps with Hammer. However, without a standardized way to share the maps, most of these have gone unnoticed by the larger community.

The Perpetual Testing Initiative's puzzle maker allows users to export their creations in Hammer's native format and continue building with the more powerful tools, if they so choose. The simple map editor is "incredibly powerful for all of its simplicity and can easily reproduce pretty much every puzzle from Portal 2," Valve said.
This is not a test: Portal 2 sales top 4 million, map editor DLC out today originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. It appears prolific level creator TopHATTwaffle originally uploaded the video but took it down at Valve's request, and it has since been uploaded by another, less remorseful Internet denizen.

The walkthrough shows a blank map as it switches between edit and playthrough modes, and the ease of creating unique, new Portal 2 levels. The only thing we think it's missing is the vocal stylings of J.K. Simmons, but we'll just content ourselves with drinking whisky and yelling at the screen every now and then.
This is how you'll edit Portal 2 levels originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2012 16:45:00 EST. It's also difficult to tell whether this RAY model is the manned version created by the Marines, or the unmanned mass-produced model designed by the Patriots. Either way, we desperately want these things adorning our various fireplace mantels as soon as humanly possible. Check out high-resolution shots of all three statues in the gallery below.

Gallery: ReVenture Statue Prototypes

ThreeA Toys unveils prototype Portal 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 statuettes originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Apr 2012 22:00:00 EST. It lights up in both orange and blue, and makes appropriate Portal-y sounds! In short, the toy does everything you'd want a Portal gun to do ... except for the one thing you'd want an actual Portal gun to do.

NECA notes on its Twitter page that pre-orders in the US are currently sold out, but "other opportunities" are coming. In fact, we doubt any decorating show currently broadcast today would recommend these new life-sized inflatable Portal turrets from Think Geek, even though they're clearly the coolest.

At $24.99 a pop, these 40-inch replicas can add a touch of sophistication to literally any room in your house, provided said room isn't located in the vacuum of space -- these are inflatable, after all. Best of all, these helpful sentries aren't produced in limited quantities like some other Portal merchandise we've seen lately, which means your only decorating limitation is the depth of your wallet. Remember, nothing says class like the incredibly specific smell of inflatable plastic toys.
Life-size inflatable Portal turrets: the secret to a sophisticated home originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 16:15:00 EST. NECA has only manufactured 5,000 of the $140 replicas, and considering that Portal 2 sold three million copies in its first two months on the market, we expect demand to be fairly high. Remember when you learned about sharing in kindergarden? This is why.
Portal Gun arrives at Think Geek, goes on sale mid May originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. Also in contention for that prize were Batman: Arkham City, which ended up winning the BAFTA for Action, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which didn't win anything.

Battlefield 3 took home top honors in Audio Achievement, Online Multiplayer, and the publicly voted-upon GAME Award of 2011, edging out its bitter rival Modern Warfare 3 in all three categories. After slamming on the brakes with certain retailers, the association aims to deliver the replica between May and June in an "organized and fair manner."

Original story:

NECA -- National Entertainment Collectibles Association -- was set to create a line of replica portal guns for public purchase in May or June this year, but it has stopped production on the piece, citing "issues" and "no longer planning on making it for the foreseeable future," according to information shared via email by distributor Entertainment Earth. "The item was never produced, and to the best of our knowledge will not be delivered to any retailer at this time."

Entertainment Earth has logged a protest with NECA, but for now it seems we'll all be $130 richer and a million-fold more heartbroken.

[Thanks, Matthew.]
Replica portal gun orders canceled by some retailers [update: still coming, says NECA] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 17:30:00 EST.
