We certainly didn't expect Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords to be released on DS this week, mostly because it was released on DS in 2007. But new publisher 1st Playable Productions has surprised us all with a DSiWare version. If you missed out on it then, you can get it now without undertaking a heroic journey to the store.

In addition to subverting our expectations with a "new" game from four years ago, DSiWare also hosts a shmup about conserving ammo.

Meanwhile, WiiWare features a game about ... pouring liquids. But, like, with puzzles and stuff.

Firemint acquires Puzzle Quest dev Infinite Interactive

You'd think after selling a billion iPhone games, the Firemint crew, makers of those Flight Control and Real Racing games on your phone, would go buy a boat or something. But, oh no, they had to be "smart" with their money, acquiring Puzzle Quest developer Infinite Interactive to form an even stronger, more independent operation, which "works exclusively on self-published original games." Who do these guys think they are ... PopCap?

It would seem that Firemint starter Rob Murray and Infinite Interactive founder Steve Fawkner, both Aussies, have been casually strategizing for years now. "Steve and I have been talking about working together for a long time, and I remember him showing me an early version of Puzzle Quest," Murray recalled. "This inspired me to make a game during my own holidays two years later, which was Flight Control -- and now, another two years later, we've finally found a way to work together!" (The financial terms of the deal haven't been disclosed.)

Infinite Interactive will merge into Firemint's "recently expanded" (how convenient!) offices in Melbourne and continue work on some kind of infectious game that could endanger world health at a bargain price. And then, they'll all probably buy a fleet of boats and retire into Port Phillip Bay.

Puzzle Quest 2 drops on XBLA June 30

Clear your schedule, Xbox 360 owners: you're going to have an ongoing appointment with some gems in the next couple of weeks. D3 Publisher has announced a June 30 release date for the XBLA version of Puzzle Quest 2, at a price of 1200 Microsoft Points. If you're wondering how you'll possibly survive the agonizing nine-day wait, may we suggest the DS version of the same game? It's out ... tomorrow.

Puzzle Quest Chapters 1 and 2 free on iPhone this weekend

Whether you're bored, cheap or in desperate need of a new on-the-go gaming addiction (perhaps for that long flight out to the west coast for a major electronic entertainment convention?), you'll want to hop on the App Store with all available haste to take advantage of a pretty wicked offer. For this weekend only, the first two installments in the pseudo-episodic iPhone version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords have been rolled into one totally free package.

The third (and final) chapter of the game is still selling at its usual retail price of $1.99, but we wouldn't worry too much about that. It's not like you'll be compelled to get that far in the game because it's super, super addictive or anything.

Hands-on: Puzzle Quest 2

"So would you call this a return to form?" I asked Infinite Interactive's Steve Fawkner right before I picked up the controller to play Puzzle Quest 2. "Yes, very much so," he replied. Fawkner isn't shy about admitting that Puzzle Quest Galactrix deserved a few of the lumps it got from fans ("They didn't like it when minigames blocked progress on the main game"), and so when his team set out to create a full-fledged sequel to the gem-matching, role-playing hit, they wanted a good mix of updated gameplay that didn't stray too far from what made the first title so good.

And from my short play session, it seems that's exactly what they got. A lot has changed from the first Puzzle Quest, and while fans will miss a few things (my beloved Druid class is gone!), most of the changes are in service to, and succeed at, making the game more fun.

Puzzle Quest 2 footage gets you from point A to point B

Yes, we know you're upset that Puzzle Quest 2's completely addictive gem-swapping sessions will be interrupted by primitive world traversal -- why can't we just bounce from fight to fight on an overworld map like civilized humans? Try not to get your knickers in a twist; based on the trailer above, it doesn't look like traveling between levels will be too taxing of an ordeal. Especially if you just teleport to where you're headed, which may actually reduce the amount of downtime between brawls. Now that's more like it.

Puzzle Quest 2 coming to DS June 22

We know there have been plenty of pretenders to the Puzzle Quest throne, many developed/perpetrated by developer Infinite Interactive itself. But do you still remember? Is there a place in your memory for those seemingly countless hours you spent peering into your DS, hoping to line up enough red gems to get off that last fire spell before you were overwhelmed by a giant spider? Do you remember? More importantly: Have the countless clones and wannabes completely dulled your desire for a return to the world of puzzle quest?

You'll have on opportunity to answer that question for yourself as publisher D3 has just announced that the follow-up, Puzzle Quest 2, will arrive in North American shops on June 22 according to Shacknews. Can't wait a month? OK, fine, here. Just don't spoil your dinner.

Puzzle Quest 2 'Mage Trainer' demo cast onto Facebook

If you've played the impossibly addictive gem-swapping RPG known as Puzzle Quest, you probably won't find yourself in uncharted waters when you check out the game's upcoming sequel, due out this June. Still, if you need a refresher course, or if you're an untainted newbie, you should check out the Puzzle Quest 2 Mage Trainer game on Facebook.

It serves as a surprisingly comprehensive demonstration of what the series' combat feels like, though it lacks some of Puzzle Quest's RPG trappings. Mercifully enough, it also lacks Puzzle Quest's hyper-repetitive music.

Infinite Interactive and D3 Publisher would like to remind you that they have claimed your free time this spring. Puzzle Quest 2 is on the way, bringing back the diabolical alchemy of match-three puzzles and fantasy role-playing that turned us all into gem-hoarding monsters the first time.

As the trailer above shows, Puzzle Quest 2 features an entirely new storyline, so we'll get to meet new characters just as memorable as whoever it was we were playing as between rounds of the puzzle game last time.

It's a holiday miracle! Though there are a few intriguing items in this week's PSN update (such as the long overdue release of Braid, a demo for Army of Two: The 40th Day and Beatles: Rock Band's "Rubber Soul" DLC), the highlight of this latest update is the delectable set of discounts. Some games have had their prices temporarily reduced, such as Battlefield 1943 and Burnout Paradise. Others, such as Puzzle Quest and The Cube, have been permanently encheapened. Worms 2, Galactrix half-off at Amazon [update]

Update: As some commenters have pointed out, it looks like the deals are no longer available. We hope you managed to snag one.

We bet you were really hoping to not spend an extra five dollars today. We're sure you thought to yourself that you've got plenty of games to play and, honestly, what could you buy with five bucks anyway? The answer: Worms 2: Armageddon on Xbox Live Arcade. The good people at CheapCollegeGamers have uncovered a pair of great deals on Amazon. First and foremost, Worms 2 is available for a paltry $5, fifty percent off the usual $10 price tag. If you don't have it already, it would be crazy not to buy it at that price.

Amazon is also offering Puzzle Quest: Galactrix at a discounted price of $10, half of the normal $20 cost. Granted, it's not quite as easy to recommend Galactrix as Worms 2, but $10 is a much more palatable price. Now go buy Worms 2.

D3 Publisher: Puzzle Quest 2 won't have Galactrix's load time issues

As exciting as the prospect of Puzzle Quest in Space might have been, the excitement offered by Galactrix was completely derailed by the game's outrageously lengthy load times. However, in a recent interview with Kotaku, D3 Publisher's Michael Cerven claimed that the recently announced Puzzle Quest 2 won't be plagued by the frequent intermissions, as developer Infinite Interactive "rebuilt the DS engine from the ground up to be fast and perform smoothly with very quick load times as opposed to retrofitting the lead SKU code for the DS."

If Cerven's claims are true, we suppose this is good news for the impatient puzzle-solvers out there. However, we got so much stuff done during Galactrix's near-constant loading screens. We even learned to speak Esperanto! Ĉi tiu estas rakonto pri videoludoj!

Puzzle Quest 2 coming to DS, XBLA in Spring 2010

Though we're confident Infinite Interactive's Puzzle Quest 2 will eventually be a mega-multiplatform release like its predecessor, D3Publisher announced that the game's roll-out will start on DS and Xbox Live Arcade. It'll be out in spring 2010, along with every other game you've ever heard of, which means that you'll now have the choice to play all those games or Puzzle Quest. They'll occupy about the same amount of time.

Puzzle Quest 2 will let players match gems as one of four new character classes: War Mage, Inquisitor, Barbarian, or Assassin, using "all-new weapons, spells, and shields." Sorry if you just got over a Puzzle Quest addiction.

Puzzle Quest sequel revealed

It appears that GamePro will reveal the first details of Puzzle Quest 2 in its next issue. Beyond a single image, the mag doesn't drop any details on its website. After Infinite Interactive went a tad off course with Galactrix -- meanwhile, developing Puzzle Kingdoms, Puzzle Chronicles and Neopets Puzzle Adventure -- it's good to see the team going back to its roots.

From the image, it seems that Puzzle Quest 2 is being developed for Xbox 360, but if it's anything like its predecessor, the game will eventually release on every console, handheld and electronic device known to man. One can also deduce that purple is now a rune for spells instead of XP. But what purpose do the gloves serve? We're sure to learn more very soon.

The excellent and addictive Puzzle Quest gets half off this week for Xbox Live Gold Members. Major Nelson sends word by necromantic carrier pigeon that the jewel-dropping epic will cost a mere 400 ($5).

Even if you aren't interested in the game at the moment, may we suggest picking it up as a "boredom insurance policy?" Seriously, the first time you get bored, just boot up Puzzle Quest and you'll come out of the trance sometime the following week. Hey, listen ... we said it was an insurance policy against boredom -- nothing about you being able to keep your job, spouse or grades after starting.

Puzzle Quest: Galactrix jumps onto PSN this week

The PlayStation Blog has sent a sub-space transmission that Puzzle Quest: Galactrix will materialize on the service this Thursday, May 7, for $20. The Puzzle Quest sequel arrived earlier this year on other platforms to mixed reviews -- with the DS version having its own special loading issues.

So, take a spin around the galaxy this Thursday, and hopefully the jumpgate hacking missions won't make you experience Galactrix's patented brand of frustration.

Tonight: Play Galactrix with the developers

For those of you out there that decided to pick up Puzzle Quest: Galactrix this week, you might be interested to know that you can square off with the developers tonight on Xbox Live. For your chance to play, simply send a friend request to one or all of the gamertags below. The developers will be on Xbox Live starting at 8:00pm Eastern Time and will be playing until 10:00pm. According to the event details on the 360 dashboard, you should be ready to play within half an hour of the event. All that's left is to hope you get an invite from one of the developers.

If you do get to play with a developer, do us a favor and ask what's up with the load times on the DS version.

Puzzle Quest: Galactrix beams down to XBLA on April 8 [update]

We take no pleasure in admitting that Puzzle Quest: Galactrix on the DS was a poorly designed, loading-time-riddled heart breaker. So, it's with no small amount of trepidation and a modicum of hope that we report the XBLA version of the game will arrive on April 8 for ~~an undisclosed price~~. [Update: Just heard back from D3. Galactrix will run you 1600 points, or $20.]

Though its DS counterpart hurt us and hurt us badly, we're hoping that the XBLA version fares much, much better. We're not sure all the problems can be fixed by porting the game to a different box, but we'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

Galactrix coming to PC on Feb. 24, XBLA date unconfirmed

The stars are pointing to an almost simultaneous release of Puzzle Quest Galactrix on DS, PC and XBLA; currently, the Xbox 360 version is the only one not "officially" confirmed. GamerBytes noticed earlier today that Xbox.com listed a February 24 release date for the RPG puzzle title. The page is, as of this writing, still live with the date. Of course, a problem with that release date is that it marks a Tuesday ... which doesn't really fit in with that whole Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday thing. Oh yeah, also, it says "2/24/2008," which would be last year.

Publisher Aspyr has confirmed the Feb. 24 PC release date, which follows the confirmation of the DS date a couple of weeks ago. By Grabthar's hammer, we hope Galactrix hits that Wednesday. We'd rather avoid another six-month wait like we endured with the original Puzzle Quest.

Puzzle Quest: Galactrix warps onto DS Feb. 24

D3Publisher announced today that Puzzle Quest: Galactrix will jump into retail on stardate 62402.24 (February 24, 2009). Demos are currently playable on PC in both Flash-based and downloadable form. Versions for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC are planned for "early 2009."

We've sent Bothans to gather more intel on a specific release date for our home systems, because like our obsession with The Real Housewives of Orange County, we prefer to keep our gem-shifting vice behind-closed-doors.

Puzzle Quest Galactrix boldly going to PSN

As hinted by the official Puzzle Quest Galactrix flash demo, the game has been confirmed by D3Publisher (via Eurogamer) to have a planned release on the PSN. Galactrix will be similar to the original Challenge Of The Warlords in terms of gameplay, but will feature a science fiction setting, rather than a fantasy one. If you haven't played Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords yet, be sure to give it a go. You've no excuse really, it's on practically every system available.

Currently price and release date info is a mystery, but Galactrix is supposed to release around March.

Resistance is futile: Puzzle Quest Galactrix launches Flash demo

A Flash demo is available now for those looking to try Puzzle Quest's sci-fi follow-up, Galactrix. The rules may be slightly different (the no extra turn for 4-of-a-kind is a doozy), but be warned, star gazing gem shifters: the refined spice which made the fantasy realm of Puzzle Quest so addictive is still quite potent in this new form.

Galactrix is expected to arrive the relatively near future for Nintendo DS, PC, XBLA and PSN. The demo doesn't seem to take prisoners, so hit the enemy with lasers and use shields when opportunity allows.

Neopets Puzzle Adventure gets October release window

When we raved about the Othello-based, Neopets Puzzle Adventure, we couldn't scrub away the sadness of endorsing something built on a Tomagotchi-knock-off. We name-dropped how it's being developed by Infinite Interactive, creators of Puzzle Quest, but that wasn't enough. We shivered for weeks.

Capcom let us know that the PC and DS versions are due by the end of October, while a Wii edition is coming later. So you'll soon be able to share our love of the puzzler (and self-loathing). Check out our original impressions again for the full details.

Puzzle Quest and expansion puzzling PSN this winter

For PS3 owners somehow unacquainted with Puzzle Quest, we suggest stocking up on antibiotics and extra time. D3Publisher has revealed plans to bring not only the original Puzzle Quest but also its recent fan-named expansion, Revenge of the Plague Lord, to the PlayStation Store this winter, a move that according to our calculations will make it scientifically impossible not to have lost sleep playing the puzzle-RPG hybrid.

Both titles will be released as a single purchase and download, though the publisher has not announced how much the time sink combo will cost. We're currently waiting to hear back from our man on the street, who's diligently checking the alleys to see how much a twofer of digital crack goes for these days, anyway.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords to be bundled with expansion

The game that's already on literally every other system is finally headed for the PSN. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords will be bundled with the Revenge of the Plague Lord expansion pack when it is becomes available for download for the PS Store later this winter, D3 Publisher announced.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Puzzle Quest is a role-playing game that uses puzzles in place of tradtional RPG battles. The expansion will include new professions, new spells and new areas to explore. No exact pricing or release date have been announced, but considering how long PS3 owners had to wait for this game, a comparatively lower price point might make this title a bit more enticing.

Puzzle Quest spreads to iPhone App Store 'this fall'

Intent on making Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords impossible to avoid regardless of your platform preferences (seriously: DS, PSP, Xbox Live Arcade, Windows, Mac OS X, Wii, PlayStation 2, mobile phones), D3Publisher has announced the puzzle phenomenon will be its very first foray into the wide, wide world of iPhone apps.

Having proven their chops getting things to run on Apple platforms with Cider, the alchemists at TransGaming will be responsible for the iPhone port, bringing all the match-three slash RPG gameplay you know and love to the App Store "this fall."

D3 officially brings Puzzle Quest to PS3 and TGS

Last we heard about a Puzzle Quest game coming over to the PS3, it was a slight nod found tucked away under a pile of PEGI-rated titles. This time around it's yet again another shy mention, but one that comes straight from publishers D3 themselves.

Listed under the company's TGS 2008 lineup, Puzzle Quest is mentioned as a downloadable PS3 title. This one is probably one and the same as the title that was discovered under PEGI previously. Not much else was revealed; the game doesn't even have a logo like the other titles on the list. We guess we'll see the game at the show. It looks like it'll be going to Europe and Japan, we'll just have to find out if North America will get some puzzle questing done too.

American PC Store releases for September 25th

We recommend getting your paws on Puzzle Quest, as it's a great game to have on your memory stick "just in case," without taking up your UMD drive. Here's the full release list:

D3 Publisher reveals European PSP download lineup

D3 Publisher will be extending its range of newly announced PSP downloadable titles to Europe. While there is no pricing info nor release date, the company has listed which games it will be making available for download in Europe in Q4 2008. These are Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, Cube, Practical IQ, Dead Head Fred, Beta Bloc and Super Pocket Tennis.

So, for the most part these releases are the same as D3 Publisher's upcoming US downloadable releases, with the exception of Beta Bloc and Super Pocket Tennis. We'll update you with a release schedule and pricing as soon as we find out. If the price is right, a number of these games would make a perfect impulse buy.

'Classic' PSP games coming to PlayStation Store

While it doesn't quite fulfill our wish list of PSP games we'd most want to purchase by download and run from a single Memory Stick, D3 Publisher's "classic" catalog is coming to PlayStation Store (the PC one) this September. Props for being ahead of the curve. Up for digital delivery will be:

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords ($14.99)

PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient ($9.99)

American McGee's Grimm continues on GameTap this week with The Girl Without Hands -- yup, it's getting darker. Same as every week, the episode is free to non-subscribers for the first 24 hours after release. The service also gets into the drug trade by adding the addictive Puzzle Quest.

Puzzle Quest discovered on PEGI website

The keen eyes at Siliconera have done it yet again! They've spotted Puzzle Quest for the PSN. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords - Revenge of the Plague Lord is a downloadable PSN game with online play, according to the ratings service. Considering Puzzle Quest successfully launched on pretty every console imaginable, we don't doubt that D3 is looking to expand their fanbase and sell more copies of their addictive puzzle-RPG hybrid.

THQ games joining GameTap this summer

Gaming buffet GameTap just announced that THQ- and ValuSoft-published titles will begin finding their way onto the service starting this summer. Notable titles include:

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and expansions
Company of Heroes
Red Faction
Supreme Commander
Saints Row 2
Puzzle Quest
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

It's nice to see relatively new titles like Supreme Commander make the list. We're also curious to find out if Saints Row 2 releases on the service the same day as retail, similar to GameTap's deal with Codemasters. The THQ agreement is apparently a "long-term partnership" and some titles will also be made available on GameTap's free ad-supported service. This THQ announcement comes only a few months after Interplay returned and Take-Two committed to the service.

XBLA DLC this Wednesday: N+ and Puzzle Quest

They've both been quite some time in coming, and this Wednesday will see the release of new downloadable content for games that are themselves downloadable. N+ will be getting a new level pack which contains 150 single player levels, and 50 co-op levels, all for 200pts (which, as the devs point out, equates to a point per level). As for Puzzle Quest, its player named DLC, Revenge of the Plague Lord, will contain 4 new classes, a new map area, 25 new quests, 40 more items and a raise of the level cap. The Puzzle Quest expansion will be priced at 700pts.

Puzzle Quest update to infect XBLA this Wednesday

Those jewels you've been collecting are about to get a whole lot more infectious, as D3Publisher announced that its player-christened Puzzle Quest expansion, Revenge of the Plague Lord, will infest Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, July 23.

Develped by Puzzle Quest devs, Infinite Interactive, the 700 Microsoft Point update will offer a virulent mass of new content, including 25 new quests, 50 new spells, 40 new items, and four new heroes, as well as the ability to build up characters to level 60. In addition, Revenge of the Plague Lord will also add three new Achievements to the popular puzzler, giving us plenty to feed our fever until we look to the skies next year.
