For those yet to run an anticipatory pointer over that quivering play button, the trailer heralds the return of the third-person view present in the franchise's last installment, features familiar parasites who recently and irrevocably wrecked the shop of a small European village, and introduces the game's obligatory female accomplice -- though the new femme fatale appears to be able to hold her own a bit better than the president's daughter. Controversial imagery or no, our excitement for Capcom's newest head-buster is thick enough to drizzle over pancakes, and as infectious as that rascally T-Virus.
Resident Evil 5 trailer whets our appetite for 'zombie' destruction originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 31 May 2008 10:30:00 EST. It's nothing to get too excited about honestly. First of all, the entire video is in Japanese, which makes sense considering it was taken from a Capcom 25th anniversary DVD found in the latest Famitsu. That said, we do get to take a look at Chris Redfield taking out the latest batch of not-zombies in Resident Evil 5. Honestly, it's probably a good thing that most of the footage was taken off-screen, as the sheer size of Chris Redfield's muscles might be overpowering in high definition. Seriously, it looks like he's smuggling T-bones in the back of his shirt (thick T-bones). Check out the new footage after the break.
Continue reading New (off-screen) Resident Evil 5 footage

New (off-screen) Resident Evil 5 footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. An author on left-leaning AlterNet.org not only jumps on the controversy of Resident Evil 5's alleged racism, but calls it a "racist video game series." The article is such a mess that you really have to enjoy it for its absurdity. The piece starts by saying those who go to see the "blockbuster Resident Evil: Extinction" in the theaters may want to play the game, but those who do "will likely enter a world little-known beyond the expensive and expansive universe of gaming, a world increasingly populated with very dangerous depictions of nonwhites."

The author only covers RE4 and RE5 in declaring the series racist. For RE4 he says its Spaniards have "stereotypical Mexican accents" and that RE5 "could be a training video for a white supremacist race war or another U.S. military adventure in one of the increasing numbers of deserts on the planet." Beyond the Resident Evil series there is a rehash of the Haitian controversy from GTA: Vice City -- although the author is way off in his timeline calling GTA: VC "this year's most popular video game."

There's a lot more "racist" issues brought up, but the article really stands as great piece to highlight how even when you introduce diversity to gaming, it's not just the extreme exclusionists who get upset and don't understand why there are women, gays, non-whites in games, but the extreme inclusionists too. Although in the inclusionist's case they want a rosy picture painted of the non-majority group; however, that's boring for narrative, unrealistic and in the end racism really depends on context. There are more moderate views on race issues in video games and that really shouldn't be forgotten. The AlterNet article is just so weird in its "one step forward, two steps back" presentation, we can't help but share.

[Via GamePolitics]
Resident Evil called 'racist video game series' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Sep 2007 11:10:00 EST. An African women's blog has taken offense to the new Resident Evil 5 trailer depicting a "white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people." The blog post goes on to say that the black people "are supposed to be zombies" and that it's "the white man's job" to destroy them and save humanity. There are some other issues the writer has, but she ties it all up by saying "this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young ... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."

OK, where to begin? As for the "marketed to children" thing, it's going to be an M rated game, kids shouldn't be playing it. It is rather interesting to note that more than a few people, including The Village Voice, have noticed the setting of the new RE5 and found it a little jarring. Although that could simply be because the average video game may only have one random black character (typically a hero or anti-hero), so more than two on the screen at any one time is revolutionary. The African issue aside, the Japanese developed Resident Evil series has been killing white people for its entire run so far -- how did white people not catch on to this and get upset? Because it's not white killing, it's zombie killing. You're killing them because they want to eat or infect you, not because of their skin color. But now we have black zombie-like people getting killed in RE5 and gay aliens in Halo 3 ... what is this industry coming to? The sins of diversity.
African women's blog upset over Resident Evil 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Aug 2007 13:23:00 EST. Not only did he create MegaMan, but he's mulling over the possibility of making a next-gen Onimusha title, reviving the amazing MegaMan Legends franchise, and goes on to talk a bit about the changes made in Resident Evil 5. While every single one of those games deserves their own time in the sun, we're going to squash them together in bullet list form and let you decide who to dote over.

Inafune wants to make MegaMan Legends 3 awfully bad -- moreso than Onimusha and perhaps RE5, but since management won't give him funding, he has to wait until he climbs the ladder a little more.

If an Onimusha sequel is created, Inafune wants to go back to actor-based characters instead of the fictional characters from Dawn of Dreams.

In the same vein, Inafune wants to make an Onimusha with a female lead character, but he's told it would not sell, so it has been denied him these many years! We are sad at hearing this.

As for Resident Evil 5, light is the new source of fear instead of dark. Inafune and gang (including a good number of people from the defunct Clover studios) want to find ways to utilize light to scare people. How realistically it can be used, etc. It seems like it could work. It's hard to see in a house if you've been out in the blazing desert sun for a few hours. Who knows what lurks within!

We hope Inafune gets more sway in Capcom's happenings, because we want to see some amazing games that we know developers are willing to work on. The above three are probably the ones we're looking forward to the most from Capcom, partially because we don't fully believe they'll be happening anytime soon. It's sad, but true. Which of these three would you love to have fall into your hands tomorrow morning?
Next-gen Onimusha, MegaMan Legends, and RE5 discussed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. It makes that old trailer look positively grody by comparison. What's so great about the new trailer? How about Chris Redfield talking? How about some actual gameplay footage? How about 27% more eye bleeding? Yeah, we thought that would get you going.

If you want to experience the horror in your own living room, the extended video is available on Xbox Live Marketplace and on PSN.

Gallery: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 trailer gets extended originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 14:20:00 EST. The trailer is an extended version of the one Microsoft showed at E3. In the new trailer, Chris Redfield, longtime veteran of the RE series, tells of his struggles policing what appears to be an African village. More importantly, we finally get a glimpse at Resident Evil 5's gameplay. Fans of RE4 can relax, because the series is definitely maintaining the 3rd person, over-the-shoulder perspective. What has changed, though, is the sheer number of enemies that are standing on the business end of Redfield's gun. At points in the trailer, there appear to be literally dozens of enemies. What's more, they appear to be very quick, even more so than the Ganados of RE4. Finally, the trailer closes with a glimpse of a female character, suspended in a liquid filled tank of some sort. Who she is is anyone's guess (Jill Valentine? A grown up Ashley Graham?) -- our Resident Evil lore is a little rusty. Graphically, the game looks amazing, especially the facial models. But enough talk! Watch it already.
First Resident Evil 5 gameplay trailer on XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 10:30:00 EST. The main focuses of the interview are Microsoft's 2008 lineup, the 360's performance in Japan, and the Games for Windows brand. Of particular interest is the discussion on games likely to be released in 2008. Microsoft's E3 keynote focused only on 2007. Addressing the question of 2008 and games like Alan Wake, Too Human, and Fable 2, Kim notes that these titles are not "way out in the future" and that Microsoft would not be talking about them if they were. Kim also tantalizingly applied this reasoning to Peter Jackson's Halo project.

Another of the more bizarre moments of the interview occurred during the discussion on Microsoft's performance in Japan. According to Kim, Resident Evil 5 for the Xbox 360 was supposed to be "the big announcement." We're a little puzzled by this -- as was Game Informer -- considering the game was announced for PS3 and 360 just over two years ago. Anyone even remotely familiar with the Resident Evil franchise could have picked Chris Redfield's dashing looks from afar, but it's still nice to get confirmation from Jun Takeuchi, the game's producer. But Chris isn't working for the Special Tactics And Rescue Squad this time. He's working for BSAA -- we can't even think of a good phrase to match that one. We can't blame him, he's been out of work for 10 years, apparently. Ever since the end of the Mansion Incident.

Jun tempts us with questions, asking us what happened to Chris over the last ten years, if he's fighting for good or evil, what kind of creatures is he up against? We don't know, Jun! We honestly don't know! He was sparse in mentioning game details, but he assures us there are some gameplay mechanics in the works he can't talk about yet. Light and darkness will play a major role -- if you enter a dark room from outside, it'll take a little while to adjust and vice-versa. C'mon, Chris, wear an eyepatch. That's what they're for, after all.
It's official: Chris Redfield locked, loaded for Resident Evil 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 21:00:00 EST. You may have noticed that the non-zombie gentleman in that hot, hot Resident Evil 5 trailer bore a striking resemblance to Chris Redfield, star of Resident Evil and Code Veronica. That's easily explained by the fact that it totally is Chris Redfield. Famitsu got the scoop from producer Jun Takeuchi, who said that RE 5 will take place 10 years after the first in the series, and will follow Chris as he investigates a situation for a group called BSAA.

Chris will face off against some non-zombies in action that Takeuchi said was similar to RE 4 with some new features, including forcing players to allow their eyes to adjust to different light levels when they enter and leave buildings. As demonstrated in the picture above, squinting is the new waggle.
Resident Evil 5 does, in fact, feature Chris Redfield originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 15:27:00 EST. They are taking their sweet time (and probably relying on the attractive Devil May Cry 4 to boost sales a bit) to make sure we're getting the best product starring Chris Redfield we can get. In fact, Capcom must really love that poster boy -- he's been in the most games. The original (which we'll count as the fantastic GameCube remake), Code: Veronica and now this. However, poster boy #2, Leon Kennedy, stars in the best games of the series -- the second and fourth. Debate all you like.

Capcom released some financial reports and guess what game isn't listed on this fiscal calendar's release schedule? Yep, Resident Evil 5. This means we can expect to do the business with the zombies and whatnot around April of next year. At the earliest. Every single game just seems to get farther and farther from release! Eventually, developers might just shrug their shoulders and say "well, we just don't want to release games anymore." We kid, of course, but the waiting game is so boring.
Resident Evil 5 before April 2008 seems very unlikely originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. Even Sega got their fix on the Saturn and the Dreamcast. PC? You bet. Handhelds, movies, you name it -- Resident Evil has touched it. Except for a Microsoft system, oddly enough. Perhaps that hesitation is what spawned the latest rumor: Resident Evil 5 is inching toward PS3 exclusivity. With Sega out of the race and Nintendo opting not to use graphics as a selling point, RE5 looks towards the PS3 just like Silent Hill 5 is -- should sales improve, exclusivity may result.

A variety of Japanese media outlets have come out to confirm that the initially planned 360 version of the game has been dropped by Capcom. No evidence, no quotes, just heresay from magazines and denials by Capcom. Thus the rumor. On the flipside, Capcom and Microsoft have enjoyed monumental success with Dead Rising and Lost Planet. The multiplatform announcement for Devil May Cry 4, followed by the announcement all Capcom games from then on would be multiplatform, lay credence to debunking this rumor. We have no idea. We won't hold our breath, but if the rumor is true, it would be the biggest surprise of the year.
Rumor: Resident Evil 5 becoming a PS3 exclusive? Nothing about the game, really, but they did offer up a list of ten things they'd like to see. We haven't done a list in forever, so we've got to go with it. This is what they want:

True Next-Gen Gameplay -- the best way to summarize what they mean is the quest for better AI, more physics-based puzzles, and visuals to serve up the best mood for the game.

Online Play -- not like Outbreak. The end.

Co-op Throughout Campaign -- calling it a "campaign" makes it sound like any other shooter, IGN. But having a partner rip through the zombie ranks would be neat. Just so he or she isn't a complete idiot. AI is important here too, if you don't have a buddy to take up a second controller.

Revamped Controls -- RE4 did well, but moving whilst shooting (perhaps roll-dodges or something) would be nice, along with quick weapon swaps and proper melee moves.

Tight Script and Voice Acting -- whatever. No game has really sold me on voice acting except the Metal Gear games. It's like the script writers sit down, pen something with their foot, slap a title on it and call it dialogue. It's not dialogue -- it's a footnote. Bwa ha ha ha! Get it? Damn, that was amazing.

Gameplay Mix -- make things a little less linear, really.

Incredible Boss Battles and a Solid Ending -- 'nuff said.

Give Us A Chainsaw -- uh, all right.

No More Typewriters -- what? While we're at it, why not take out spiky hair from JRPG's? Or guns out of FPS titles? Terrible suggestion. Typewriters are awesome.

Cake and Eat It, Too -- see the impact of weapons... more than just a popping head.

Well, they've covered a lot of suggestions. Do you have any to add? We'd like a better range of weaponry -- definitely more melee weapons. How great would it be to slice through zombies with a katana/single-sided axe combo? We'd need a pretty cool move set, though...
RE5 wishlist, add your own wishes! originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 12:00:00 EST. We'll most likely hear plenty of news concerning the recently announced 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, but we may be in store for some Resident Evil news as well. A concerned poster by the name of Drdark on the Capcom message boards made known his desire to see some news about the upcoming PS3 and 360 Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for Wii. Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson responded to Drdark saying, "You may be slightly pleased and slightly disappointed then."

While the fanboys inside beg us to shout out that Resident Evil 5 news is on the way, we have to agree with 1UP that Svensson is probably referring to Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii (especially considering RE5 could easily be a 2008 title). For now though, it can't hurt to dream.

[Via 1UP]
Resident Evil 5 news next month? So says Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, posting on the official Capcom forums in the midst of a Devil May Cry outcry. When asked by fans whether the company's new mulitplatform strategy would extend to their pair of successful Xbox 360 titles, Svensson explains that "Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3," noting that the reasons for the continued exclusivity "are quite convoluted" and are bound by a slew of suspicious non-disclosure agreements.

He goes on to say that Capcom's current approach -- which sees Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 coming to both PS3 and Xbox 360 -- is for future titles and isn't meant to be applied in a "retroactive" manner. Of course, this comes just days after Svensson used the forum to respond to sulking petitioners and their disdain for Devil May Cry gracing multiple platforms.

"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes," he said in a seperate thread. "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."

Apparently, Dead Rising and Lost Planet simply missed the multiplatform boat.
The experience yielded an interesting interview on Gamasutra, one that touches on the fate of Clover Studios and the not-so-elusive Ace Attorney 3.

On the topic of Clover Studios and its untimely liquidation, Bellfield asserts that several members of the team have simply been integrated into other Capcom groups. "So, for example, some of the team that worked on Clover titles are now helping Takeuchi-san on Resident Evil 5, helping Inafune-san on a new title for the Wii, so I think it's very much the skill set still stays in the company when those individuals stay and, unfortunately, three individuals chose to leave." The three referenced individuals, namely Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya, have since formed their own studio, Seeds.

Later in the interview, Bellfield expresses some surprise as to the success Phoenix Wright has found in America, with the original title now having shipped over 100,000 copies since its introduction. "It's shipped steadily for the last year, and we've just shipped Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All and we have more coming up, so I think again it's like a good book, it's that word of mouth that gets people out there to learn more about the game." With that, Bellfield likely confirms what we've suspected since Capcom launched it's Ace Attorney 3 contest last week -- the third Phoenix Wright adventure is likely being localized as we speak. English, that is.
Former Clover members now working on Resident Evil 5, new Wii game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 10:53:00 EST. Anyone? Oh well, high-fives all around! There has been little to no news circulating about this game, so we're proud to be among the few to deliver it. Resident Evil 5 isn't to be expected until 2008, so we know there's a lot going on with this game. It'll be huge and it'll be multi-platform, not to mention totally awesome. Jun Takeuchi, also known for his work on Lost Planet (among other titles), spoke a bit about the title earlier this week.

The game is taking so long partially because the picture rate is slated to run at a smooth 60fps. They're also utilizing an engine to create realistic facial expressions and animations. There will be good and bad hair days for characters, since each strand is individually coded from root to tip. There will be a great number of interactive environments, taking into account things like hot or cold temperatures to change your character's stability as well as solving certain puzzles (we assume... recall the hot and cold cardkey puzzle from the original Metal Gear Solid). Basically, this game will be worth the wait. Will they use the SIXAXIS? Who knows. But even without that function, there seems to be a solid game a-cooking.
Itchy. According to Famitsu Xbox, via GameFront, passed along by GamersReports, Capcom won't release the next Resident Evil until 2008, stalled in part by an effort to get the game running at 60 fps.

While the game will attempt greater environmental interactivity, more interestingly, Resident Evil 5 will allegedly feature hot and cold weather changes, affecting certain (unspecified) gameplay mechanics (possibly dehydration, frostbite, etc.). Developers are also focusing on enhancing character models, including facial muscles capable of a full range of expression, and realistic hair and skin rendering.
Resident Evil 5 plays hot & cold originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Dec 2006 00:25:00 EST. Perhaps you noticed that there was absolutely no Resident Evil 5 information revealed at TGS -- not even a peep. This has led some to speculate that somebody -- Microsoft -- has secured the exclusive rights to the game. What's more, the head honcho of 360 Japan, Takashi Sensui, gave a tantalizing reply when questioned directly about the issue:

"All I can say is we are very good friends with Mr. Inafune."

As any good Fanboy already knows, Mr. (Keiji) Inafune is the producer behind Resident Evil 5 as well as the runaway smash hit, Dead Rising. Wait a minute, Scooby. Didn't we run a story last month about Capcom ending PS3 exclusives as a result of Dead Rising's high sales numbers? And Lost Planet looks like it could be pretty big, too. Hmmm, this RE5 exclusivity business just might have some legs after all. If only there were some huge convention where Capcom and Microsoft could reveal such a bombshell, somewhere in Europe. Spain perhaps.

[Thanks, The1]

Update: It looks like Capcom has officially shot this rumor down. Speaking with CVG, a spokesperson said, "Resident Evil 5 will release on PS3 and Xbox 360 as announced. There a no plans for an exclusive with the game." Oh, well. At least we know it won't be exclusive for that other console either. Thanks to Abraham for the tip.
Rumor: RE5 to reside solely on 360 [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Sep 2006 15:30:00 EST. The camera from the fourth installment will remain more or less the same, but he promised there would be a surprising amount of new features added as well. For those wondering, no, there probably won't be a Resident Evil Wii. You can hope, though.

Now, about the new effects... what could have changed? Prepare yourselves for the ultimate hypothesis. If anything changed, it would probably be the mode entered after you get your weapy at the ready. You know the laser sight on the guns from RE4? Now that should be controlled by the motion-sensor in the PS3's controller. If it doesn't move the actual aim of the gun, maybe it moves the camera in a more basic way. If you've got any other ideas what would be switched up for this iteration of the series, let us know!
Resident Evil 5: camera shifting? Look at the top five. Aside from the #1 spot, Sony dominates. 9 Nintendo titles, 11 Sony titles and 1 Microsoft title. What's an XBox, Japanese gamers wonder. An interesting aside is that many of the Sony games are in fact for the PS2 and still generate as much if not more desire than the next-gen Wii and 360. Combined.

So what, you ask? So that. It's just a list of what's anticipated in Japan. Take it for what it's worth, but the fact of the matter is, in Japan at least, Sony is still jumping out of everyone's mouth. Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Dawn of Mana, Final Fantasy XIII Versus... sure, sequels, but anticipated ones. If they weren't desired, sequels wouldn't necessarily be made. Basically, hooray Sony! At least there are some hot PS2 titles on the way, along with the buzzworthy PS3 titles.
Famitsu's most wanted and most ignored originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Aug 2006 13:00:00 EST. Since most of us can't read kanji very well, IGN did the honors of translating the stats and they are summarized below:

Price:

90.29% -- think it's too pricey

9.71% -- think it's juuuuuuust right

This may seem dismal news to the PS3 fan, but remember -- there's still the Tokyo Game Show in September. Hopefully PS3 can pull out a few surprises like Devil May Cry 4 or Resident Evil 5. Those would help on its launch, but in Japan at least, Sony's main competition will be the Wii.
Japanese mag surveys development community on PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jun 2006 13:30:00 EST.
