Nihilistic Software's Resistance spin-off, Resistance: Burning Skies, is gearing up for an early summer launch on PlayStation Vita. May 29 marks the fifth coming of the Chimera in New York City.

Resistance: Burning Skies takes place during the fictional Chimera invasion of the American eastern seaboard back in 1951. Players assume the role of Tom Riley, an everyday firefighter from New Jersey. We got to check out the game back at E3 -- check out our preview for more.
Resistance: Burning Skies on PS Vita May 29 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 21:45:00 EST. We were as surprised as anyone to learn that Resistance 3's single-player campaign is compelling and well done, and that its multiplayer is engaging and fairly enjoyable as well, but so far that certainly seems to be the case. No one will know for sure until the xenophobic shooter's September 6 release, of course, but for now we'd go so far as to say that we're actually excited for the release of a Resistance game.

Targeting the completionist lobe of our perfectionism cortex, Insomniac has released the title's official trophy list, concealed after the break. It gives some spoilerific hints as to which bugs we'll be killing and where, so those of you looking to start the game with a mind as pure as the driven snow should take heed.
Continue reading Spoiler zone: The complete Resistance 3 trophy list

Spoiler zone: The complete Resistance 3 trophy list originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 20 Aug 2011 14:30:00 EST. Sony has announced at its Gamescom 2011 press conference details about Nihilistic's Resistance entry on the PlayStation Vita. Subtitled Burning Skies, the title (which serves as an immediate prequel to Resistance 2) casts you in the role of Tom Riley, a fireman who watches the destruction of the United States from ground zero. That task is made a lot more palatable thanks to Riley's proclivity for toting a wieldable fire axe at all times. We guess it's fortunate he decided to take his work home with him!

A brief demo showed off familiar Resistance action, with a few neat uses of the Vita's touchscreen -- for instance, some weapons' alternate fire modes are controlled with a single touch. That sounds like the kind of power we can get drunk off of.
Resistance: Burning Skies set to engulf PlayStation Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 13:45:00 EST. Sony's looking to prime potential Resistance 3 purchasers with a Greatest Hits bundle of the first two titles: Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. An insert included in the Battle: Los Angeles Blu-ray (which includes a Resistance 3 demo) spilled the beans, offering a Summer 2011 launch window for the re-issue, which will retail for $39.99.

The Greatest Hits bundle also includes an exclusive Resistance 3 skin and "$10 worth of bonus content." Insomniac Games, creator of the alternate-history FPS Resistance for PS3, tweeted its congratulations to Nihilistic Software, the apparent developer of the series' NGP incarnation (which was revealed in a promo reel of in-development games for the handheld during PlayStation Meeting 2011). Insomniac confirmed in a followup tweet that the title would be a "brand new Resistance game. Not a port."

While Insomniac has handled all of the Resistance console iterations, including this September's Resistance 3, the well-recieved 2009 PSP spinoff, Resistance: Retribution, was developed by Sony Bend. With Bend currently linked to the Uncharted NGP game, however, it seems Nihilistic got the call to carry on the Resistance for the PSP successor.

Little else is known about the title, aside from what can be inferred from the brief clip (pictured) in the promo reel -- which does seem to indicate that, unlike Retribution (a third-person shooter), Resistance NGP will be a first-person shooter. Nihilistic is perhaps most (infamously) known for being the original developer of the failed StarCraft: Ghost project, before going on to complete Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (EA), Conan (THQ) and the downloadable Zombie Apocalypse (Konami). The studio is currently finishing up PlayStation Move Heroes, published by Sony.

Let's face it -- cases from the PS3 Greatest Hits collection just look great on a shelf. That tiny, elegant package. That deep, crimson hue. Today, Amazon's offering a pretty efficient way to spruce up your library: Purchase any three Greatest Hits titles, and you only have to pay for two of them.
Continue reading Amazon selling three PS3 Greatest Hits for the price of two

Amazon selling three PS3 Greatest Hits for the price of two originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST. "Do you think that there is a future version of Resistance, Resistance 3, being developed?" Without a doubt, this is one of the strangest questions in a recent survey sent by PlayStation to its fans. Since the appearance of a mysterious billboard advertising a sequel to Insomniac Games' FPS franchise in October, fans have questioned not if -- but when -- Resistance 3 would be officially announced.

The follow-up question is meant to gauge interest in a possible third game (also mentioned in an artist resume), a puzzling proposition considering a sequel seems guaranteed. Insomniac's track record with holiday releases on PS3 has been nearly impeccable -- alternating between Resistance and Ratchet and Clank games like clockwork. Should Resistance 3 continue this pattern, we wouldn't be surprised if the game were announced some time soon, to launch on PS3 by the holiday. Unfortunately, this survey offers no conclusive evidence of whether or not that will be true.

Six-inch tall news now, as DC Comics has released a line of figures based on Insomniac properties Ratchet and Clank and Resistance. As you can see above, the gang's pretty much all here -- the titular duo of Ratchet and Clank, along with Dr. Nefarious and Captain Qwark. Oh, then there's the Resistance guys, like hero Nathan Hale and Chimera A and Chimera B and (our personal favorite) Chimera C!

We kid, but if you're interested in plunking down some green on these bath-time buddies (where do you play with your action figures?), you can find them at most retailers.
If you're impressed by the works of artist Ben Mauro -- featured on his blog, "Perpetual Motion" -- you may soon be seeing more of it in the next game from Resistance developer Insomniac Games. According to Mauro's LinkedIn profile, he spent three sleepless months from March until May 2009 crafting content for several projects, including "RCF2" (presumably Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time), "R3" and some unannounced items. [Note: Mentions of "R3" and "unannounced projects" have mysteriously vanished since we contacted the parties concerned.]

Though Insomniac's PlayStation 3 release pattern -- oh, and a massive billboard -- would seem to unfurl "R3" as Resistance 3, a third outing for Chimera crusher Nathan Hale has not been officially announced. A bigger, better sequel would undoubtedly provide a good opportunity to counter the negative feedback that the previous game incurred in hardcore fans.
A keen-eyed NeoGAF user by the name of goldsoundz noticed a startling billboard in his home town of Shreveport, Louisiana -- splayed out on the massive overhead placard is the logo for the heretofore unannounced next installment in Insomniac Games' PS3 shooter franchise, Resistance 3. Goldsoundz explained that Shreveport is a popular spot for film shoots, and that the ad was to be incorporated in a film titled Battle: Los Angeles, which is due out in early 2011.

By that timeline, it makes sense that Insomniac could slap another game together by the film's theatrical debut -- still, seeing gargantuan promotions for a game that hasn't been formally announced (or discussed) is a bit surprising. Certainly more surprising than a potential announcement for Resistance 3, because, come on, of course there's gonna be a Resistance 3.
It's pretty difficult to get banned from the PlayStation Network. You have to be a total jerk-face to get booted off PS3's online community. However, that's what Erik Estavallo managed to do whilst playing Resistance. With access to the game cut off, Estavallo decided to take part in the most appropriate action possible: a lawsuit.

Estavallo argues that a ban from the PlayStation Network goes against his First Amendment rights. "The plaintiff was exercising his First Amendment Rights to Freedom of Speech in the game's public forum when he was banned from, not only [Resistance], but also banned from playing all other games online via the PlayStation Network," a court document retrieved by GamePolitics reveals. This, in turn, has caused "pain and suffering" because the PS3 is "the only way the plaintiff can truly socialize since he also suffers from Agoraphobia."

Estavallo is asking for $55,000 in punitive damages and demands Sony no longer implement bans of any sort. He alleges that "PlayStation 3 is the only system that incorporates this type of wide-ranged ban. As where Nintendo does not ban customers at all. And Microsoft Xbox rarely bans."
Player sues Sony after being banned from PlayStation Network originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. Update: Looks like we may be wrong about this one as James Stevenson appeared on the PlayStation.Blog saying multiple PSN log-ins are included in the current firmware. Looks like we may have misinterpreted his comment on our site. Our original post remains below.

Looks like a PS3 firmware update may be happening today or tomorrow, folks. We reported details on the upcoming Resistance 2 patch which includes a number of features, one being multiple PSN log-ins. Many of our readers chimed in, saying this is a feature not possible with the current PS3 firmware.

We got potential confirmation of a pending PS3 firmware update through our comments section. Insomniac Games' James Stevenson responded to our post clarifying the situation. "Resistance 2 is the first game to fully log-in two PSN accounts. LBP only logs you in locally, and does not register both accounts as online through PSN. This is a big difference, and what is required for split-screen online co-op with other folks."

Here's the smoking gun: "And it was dependent on a Sony update, hence why it wasn't in when the game shipped." If the R2 patch is available on March 26th, then a new PS3 firmware update may be necessary today or tomorrow. It will have to allow for multiple PSN sign-ins, but will it feature any other improvements? Stay tuned.
PS3 firmware update may coincide with Resistance 2 patch [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Mar 2009 01:50:00 EST.
Resistance 2's first batch of DLC is coming soon, with details already spilling out of GDC. Insomniac has revealed the lineup in a video with Gamespot, which you can see after the break. The new content is split into two pieces: a patch (v1.50); and paid content from the PSN Store. Both will arrive on Thursday, March 26.

The patch will add a new multiplayer mode -- Meltdown -- as well as a new difficulty setting for co-op play. This will give higher EXP rewards, but will be much more challenging. Finally, the patch will also allow a local co-op player to sign in with his PSN profile, saving his accumulated scores.

As for the paid content, there are a number of maps being released which have been designed to allow more intimate, small scale battles. The Aftermath map pack will cost you $5.99. There are also a number of skins which will be purchasable for $0.99 each. For more details and footage of the maps, check the video after the break.

Resistance: Retribution is about to hit store shelves, and the masterful team behind it is Sony Bend. The team has earned critical acclaim for the impressive tech they've managed to squeeze into the Syphon Filter games on PSP. Those that want to find out more about the game and chat with the developers will get a chance tomorrow.
If only Resistance: Retribution hadn't been on the Playstation Portable. A game with such high production values that's a direct iteration of one of the PS3's flagship franchises could have been a downloadable episode for Resistance 2 -- and about five hours shorter. That's not even getting into the pacing issues, which are exacerbated by a number of dramatic difficulty spikes throughout.
Resistance Retribution connects the PSP and PS3 systems in a brand new way. See what new content you unlock in the game's "Infected" mode, available for those that own both the upcoming Resistance Retribution and PS3's Resistance 2. Fans of the franchise will earn a brand new mode of playing, access new areas and weapons and get some new story bits as well.

Another new feature is the ability to play the game with two analog sticks ... via DualShock 3 controls on the PS3. If you're unfamiliar with how this connectivity works, take a look at the video after the break to see how you'll be able to connect these two games.
Continue reading See how Resistance Retribution connects to the PS3

See how Resistance Retribution connects to the PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 17:45:00 EST. Motion capture is the kind of tech reserved for big-budget PS3 games. Resistance Retribution doesn't care that it's coming to PSP -- it's a big-budget game and proud of it.

IGN continues its week-long look at the upcoming PSP-exclusive, and the latest video reveals the motion capture technology that powers the animation in Bend's latest shooter. We're sure you know how this stuff works: guys wear tight black suits covered in white balls that get tracked by a computer. It's oh-so-familiar, but we're thrilled to see it used in a PSP game.
Continue reading Resistance Retribution uses mo-cap technology

Resistance Retribution uses mo-cap technology originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. If you own a PSP, chances are you're excited about Resistance Retribution. But what if you've never played one of Insomniac's PS3 games? Will you be in the dark?

Most likely not. The story of the Resistance games are pretty easy to follow: evil alien things attack earth, you fight back. A new series of videos on IGN will chronicle some of the behind-the-scenes elements of the game. Today's video, which you can check out after the break, details the franchise's story and how it ties into the upcoming Retribution.

(Also, does anyone else notice the "Rise of the Chimera" title that's in the background? Most likely it's an early name for Retribution, but it would be hilarious if we accidentally discovered a new Resistance game.)
Continue reading Resistance Retribution video chronicles franchise story

Resistance Retribution video chronicles franchise story originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 15:00:00 EST. Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet), Insomniac Games (Resistance series), Tigon Studios (anything that has Vin Diesel in it) and consultancy agency Englobe have all signed up to hold sessions at the conference in Malmö, Sweden on May 19 and 20.

Insomniac community manager Ryan Schneider will be there along with Tigon's head of game production Ian Stevens, Englobe founder Tom Edwards and some unnamed reps from Media Molecule. Media Molecule are probably still drawing straws at the moment as they're busy flying off to attend this week's D.I.C.E. Bend's upcoming prequel to Resistance 2 will be one of the best looking games on PSP when it releases next month. You should be familiar with our glowing praise of the game's standard third-person combat. The team has really nailed PSP controls perfectly. However, at Comic Con, we were able to try another section of the game. Here, players will get a chance to ride a giant mech. It's a fairly straightforward segment which gives players access to a chaingun and giant explosive missiles. The destructive power on display is rather impressive, but there are some tactics to consider.

You can't spam your weapons. Players will want to keep a close eye on the bottom right side of the screen to see when their missiles are ready. When there are flying enemies, for example, it's best to aim at the floor below and let the splash damage take out a large handful of enemies. Even with regenerating armor it's pretty rough.

Check out screens of this new mode in our gallery:

NYCC 09: Riding a mech in Resistance Retribution originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Feb 2009 13:45:00 EST. Have you been noticeably irked by some of Resistance 2's precious little "features" (i.e. bugs)? Fear not, true believer, patch 1.40 is on its way and coming Monday, January 26. If you've noticed your multiplayer level inexplicably reset to one, you'll now get it back to the proper level, plus whatever experience you earned post-reset.

The update will also correct Trophy errors, such as the one requiring 10,000 kills -- if you've done the deed but not gotten the reward, this patch will retroactively apply it. Full patch details after the break.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Continue reading Resistance 2 patch 1.40 coming Monday, un-resets your experience

Resistance 2 patch 1.40 coming Monday, un-resets your experience originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 22:56:00 EST. Many of the bugs related to saving, progression and Trophy accumulation will be fixed in a 1.40 patch available to all Resistance 2 players this Monday (1/26). For example, some players may have had their character data mysteriously reset. Those players can take comfort in knowing that all their lost progress will be restored -- and that any additional XP earned since will still count. Those that acquired the 10,000 kills necessary for the Killing Machine Trophy will automatically unlock it once the 1.40 patch is applied.

Here are the patch notes:

Trophy/Medal/Ribbons

"Salute Me" trophy is not awarded until player reaches level 31 (Lieutenant)

"Berserker" trophy can be collected during non-ranked games

"Survivor" medal can be collected in cooperative games

"Sure Shot" ribbon is awarded if player has accuracy of exactly 50%

Clans

Added clan support for viewing members, sending invites, and setting up clan tags

Default clan region is now USA

Want to know what Resistance Retribution looks like when you infect it with Resistance 2? GameTrailers has posted an interesting comparison video, showing the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences that occur when you play with an infected copy. When your game is infected, you'll have access to a new health system (regeneration), and gain access to areas that won't be available to regular players. Watch the video, after the cut.
Continue reading Resistance Retribution: to infect, or not to infect?

Resistance Retribution: to infect, or not to infect? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 14:10:00 EST. Previously, we've reported that those who pre-order Resistance Retribution from Amazon would be getting an early access demo ahead of the game's scheduled March 17 release. However, now we've come to learn that other retailers like Game Crazy, Best Buy and GameStop will also be receiving the goods.

PS.Blog notes that GameStop patrons can pre-order via the online store, same with Best Buy (when their pre-order page goes up), but sadly Game Crazy is in-store only. For now, have a gander at that slick box art and make a decision -- pre-order and get demo? Or, uh, not.
Resistance Ret. pre-order demo also at GameStop, BB originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 14:15:00 EST. This Friday Resistance 2 fans will have the opportunity to play the game against members of Insomniac. The event will take place between 7pm and 8pm GMT (that's 2pm and 3pm EST). Details on which room this will take place in will be revealed at 7pm GMT on Friday in the announcement thread on the European PS3 forums. So if you've always wanted to show the guys who made Resistance 2 just how much better than them you are at their game, this might be your chance.

[Thanks Poggins]
Play Resistance 2 with Insomniac this Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 17:15:00 EST.
It feels like it's been a long time coming. Resistance Retribution has a release date at last: March 17th. Other PSP releases in March include Hammerin' Hero, MLB 09 The Show, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce and Phantasy Star Portable. Resistance may be the best of an already-amazing lineup for March.

See this PlayStation.blog video to find out more about the game. It details things we already revealed at TGS: connectivity with Resistance 2 and the ability to play with DualShock 3. A direct-feed version of the story trailer is also included in this video.

Shocker, right? They're busy putting out things like new digital cameras, wafer-thin displays, televisions that show realistic 3D images, and some new piece of tech that replaces your brain with a network of recycled Memory Sticks. Amazing.

Still, with all that going on they do still manage to churn out games. Only a tiny part of their booth at CES was dedicated to gaming, but they managed to fit in Patapon 2, Killzone 2, Resistance: Retribution, Flower and an in-progress EyeToy game. SCEA had Resistance Retribution on display at this year's CES. Bend Studios has managed to tap into the PSP in a way never seen before. Of course, graphics are one thing -- the story of Retribution looks to be quite satisfying, especially for Resistance fans. Bridging the gap between the first and second games on PS3, the story looks nothing short of epic. You'll have to check it out, after the break.

Continue reading Resistance Retribution continues to astound

Resistance Retribution continues to astound originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 22:23:00 EST. Well, now's the time to prove your worth. Major League gaming and PlayStation have teamed up to present a $50,000 R2 Ladder. Some of the best players from all over the country will face off online, and the top 64 teams (256 players total) will win cash and prizes. The first place team will win $9,000 -- not a bad chunk of change for playing a video game, right?

Registration opens next week, on December 22nd. The competition is only open to US residents 17 years of age or older. In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac community director, Brian Intihar, drops some Resistance-related info - and the prices on map packs for the original Resistance: Fall of Man.

Previously $7.99, the full collection of four maps will set you back zero dollars beginning tomorrow, December 11. (The original two-map pack debuted in June of last year at $7.99, and was followed by two more maps in November '07 for $4.99.) There are still people playing the original game - now a PS3 Greatest Hit - but most have moved on to the sequel, a likely reason for the price <strike>reduction</strike> elimination.

Insomniac will further add to the PS Store's delivery of free stuff tomorrow with three new, no-cost Resistance 2 themes for your XMB.
Map packs for original Resistance free starting Dec. 11 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 22:00:00 EST. It seems everyone's getting into the Christmas spirit today. First free Santa costumes and now we find out that Insomniac are releasing some Resistance related gifts onto the PSN Store during tomorrow's update. These gifts take the form of Resistance 2 XMB themes and a new trailer for the game. Not only that but the map packs for Resistance: Fall of Man will be made available to download for free, in case you're feeling retro this Christmas.

Bryan Intihar also states that more Resistance 2 patches are on the way and that "some really cool" new features are coming to MyResistance.net. The PlayStation Blog will have more news on both of these in the near future. In the meantime, be sure to grab all these free goodies when they arrive tomorrow and check out G4's X-Play this Friday at 8pm to see Ted Price talk about his favorite games.
Free Resistance stuff on the PSN Store tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 19:45:00 EST.
This week on the Japanese weekly sales charts, two PS3 games make a commendable debut. <strike>Yakuza 3</strike> Way of the Samurai 3 (thanks, Fiddlesworth!) was sucked in and spat out by the top dog Kirby Super Star Ultra, but it still managed to land in second place, selling 81,047 copies. And who said Japanese gamers don't enjoy first-person shooters? Resistance 2 makes it into the top 5 by the skin of its teeth, selling 33,584 copies. While Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3 is still selling relatively strong, taking eleventh place, LittleBigPlanet isn't doing quite as well -- Media Molecule's title in currently in twenty second place.

Were you able to go to Insomniac's Community Day? Don't worry -- neither were we (California's far away!). For those that weren't able to make it, the PlayStation.blog has a new video highlighting events from the day's activities. Obviously, a lot of Resistance-themed talks were at hand, as various members of the Insomniac Games team shared their studio to their loyal fans. This outreach shows why Insomniac Games is such an incredible studio.

Video: Insomniac's Community Day originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 19:55:00 EST.
