The Rock Band website has received a rather massive overhaul. Navigation has been streamlined, a catalog of every RB song has been added (each with a written description) and the long-awaited Merch Booth section has opened up, allowing you to take pictures of virtual band and purchase merchandise -- buttons, stickers, posters and shirts.

Perhaps the coolest addition is the ability to order 6" figures of your Rock Band 2 characters. As of this writing, the servers are being hammered, so we've unfortunately been unable to even preview what The Blueberry Muffintops look like in miniature, plastic form. Let us know if you've had any luck and, please, feel free to show off your band photos in the comments below.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band Weekly: The Offspring, six other bands

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

The tidal wave of Rock Band DLC doesn't stop as Harmonix tries to hit the 500 tracks available mark (RB, RB2, DLC) by year's end. According to a post on Imeem.com, Mötley Crüe's 1989 album Dr. Feelgood will be available as Rock Band DLC starting Oct. 14. We've contacted Harmonix to confirm the information. There is currently no price for the album listed and we really don't have a baseline for album cost to speculate, but standard pricing has been $2 for individual tracks.

Even if Mötley Crüe is the source of the information, that doesn't necessarily mean that date will come to pass. We'll update as soon as we get more details.

[Thanks mdouet]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band AC/DC tracks can only be transfered once per disc

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

After yesterday's announcement of the AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack, featuring all the tracks from the Live at the Donington album, Variety got a few more details from MTV's Paul DeGooyer. Most importantly, DeGooyer said the transfer can only be done once per disc, confirming initial indication of a download code printed on the game manual and expectedly void after use. Hear that gurgle? That's the collective sound of all those Blockbuster patrons' sinking hearts.

The Track Pack disc also lacks a character creator and has no online play, although you can use the AC/DC tracks online with RB1 and RB2. Unlike Guitar Hero Aerosmith, you will not be playing as the band. The good news is that all songs will be available immediately -- no need to wade through "Whole Lotta Rosie" to play "Heatseeker."

And if you're wondering whether or not "Thunderstruck" will be making a cameo on Guitar Hero: World Tour, DeGooyer said that AC/DC are exclusive to Rock Band "for a term" but provided no information on whether or not there will be future DLC from the band. The AC/DC Track Pack will be rocking and saluting in early November.

[Via X3F]

<a href=http:// http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/09/acdc-now-exclus.html>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band 2 bonus registration open, tracks 'in a few weeks'

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360

Harmonix is now accepting redemption codes for the twenty <strike>bonus</strike> FREE! downloadable tracks that come with the purchase of Rock Band 2. You'll have to give up (or make up?) some somewhat personal information and opt out of marketing spam, but after it's all submitted you should receive a speedy confirmation email locking you into your prize. And then, Harmonix says:

"Sit tight. The Bonus Tracks will be available in a few weeks -- we'll send you an email with a download code and redemption instructions as soon as they're ready." And by the way, we still have no idea what's in this mystery track pack. Original: The New York Times is reporting that MTV has signed a deal with AC/DC to add an expansion pack with 18 of the band's songs exclusively to Wal-Mart stores in support of the group's new album "Black Ice." The disc, officially titled AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack, will be released for all the consoles and will retail for, according to the Wal-Mart site, "from $29.88." The songs are taken from the DVD "AC/DC Live at Donnington," you can find a track list after the jump.

... So, at what point during all the Rock Band fans freaking out about being able to import songs into Rock Band 2 was this confusing? No one wants a bunch of Rock Band discs lying around their house! We really thought this was an area where EA "got it" and Activision had lost the plot, but it seems we were wrong.

For now, the only ones that will be affected are AC/DC fans, and they were probably too busy rushing out to get their schoolboy outfit dry cleaned to read the second graph. But we really, really hope this isn't the start of a trend.

Update: A couple of our commenters have spotted this in the fine print: "Go Beyond the Disc! - The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions ship with a code on the back of the game manual that lets you import all of the songs into the Rock Band or Rock Band 2 game environment (Internet connection required)." Sounds great! But the 360 is listed for $39.88. Isn't that still way pricey?

[Thanks, Daniel]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

USA Today: Wii's Rock Band 2 to feature DLC, online play

If you just got on the music game bus with Rock Band 2 but have found it difficult to follow the plot lines, we regret to inform you that you won't be able to simply download the songs you missed from Rock Band 1. Variety says the plan is to keep Rock Band on sale for the foreseeable future, so you'll have to buy the physical disc if you want to "Sabotage" "The Hand that Feeds" or "Learn to Fly" "Next to You."

Disappointed you can't just pay $5 to import the tunes like all your Rock Band 1 owning friends? We would kindly direct you to your local Blockbuster. The Red Hot Chili Pepper's acclaimed Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, featuring at least one thinly veiled junkie ballad you memorized during adolescence, will arrive in the Rock Band Store next week. Let's hope it shows a bit more professionalism than the last full album to crash the living room stage!

Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1600 / $20)* or by individual track (160 / $2):
Hey ladies! Be honest, if there's one problem with today's Rock Band and Guitar Hero plastic guitar offerings, it's this: they're not pink and/or heart-shaped enough, right? Here to right this egregious wrong are pop starlets Aly & AJ, both of whom have lent their considerable skills (being women?) to the design of the above two "fun and feminine" plastic guitars.

Of course, since these guitars are built exclusively for the ladies, you'll find they're only compatible with the Wii and PS2 since ... uh, we're really not sure why that is. Regardless, if that works for you, and you've got $69.99 to burn ('spensive!), hit up your local retailer in mid-October. Check out another pic of the guitars - and a video of the teenagers pitching the gear on E! - after the break.

[Via VideoGamesBlogger]

While it looks like one helluva Wiimote attachment, this gangly peripheral is actually a portable Rock Band (or more appropriately, Rock Band 2) drum kit made by Mad Catz for Xbox 360. So no, we won't be flailing the loose ends about as we race our karts through Moo Moo Meadows. We're told the pads must be laid flat, like on a sturdy coffee table (best not glass) -- or in our case: the unpaid intern's back, or better, draped over his neck like some gaudy Jesus piece -- and repeatedly smashed to the beat of the on-screen cues. We're currently testing the "designed to withstand over 1 million strikes" certification, though the same intern has begun to complain that his wrist hurts. To which we reply: "Dude, stop hitting yourself." (Yeah, we're evil like that.)

The "Official Rock Band Portable Drum Kit for Xbox 360" is currently in limbo on GameShark for $59.99 (and Buy.com for $10 less).

[Via Engadget]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band 1 finally coming to Australia Nov. 7

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

Let's just say that Rock Band was on its walkabout and that's why it will finally arrive in Australian stores on November 7. Gamespot reports the game will be sold the same way as the European version, with instruments and software offered separately. The good news is that the instruments plus software will only cost $250 AUD ($208), instead of the $300-something the Europeans had to shell out.

What about Rock Band 2? Oh, let's just not talk about that. The Europeans need to get their fix before EA can worry about the land down under, right?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band Weekly: Rush's Moving Pictures, individual tracks

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Online, Rhythm

We knew a dollar wasn't worth much in Europe these days -- but damn! $366 for a United Kingdom bandana? Harmonix is showing a sense of humor over the European pricing of Rock Band (the first one), which sparked a "flamefest" earlier this year when the total retail price was set at €240 (or, what was roughly $366) -- the price has since fallen to €210 for the Xbox 360 version.

The "UK Bandana" is being sold (using the game's virtual currency) in the Rock Band 2 shop as an accessory for players' in-game avatars, complete with this disclaimer: "Though this price may seem unfairly high, you need to figure in VAT tax, Suggested Retail Price, shipping costs ... you're not being gouged." Frightening American economic happenings aside, we're certainly enjoying a chuckle. How about you, Europe?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nega-review: Rock Band 2

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

"At its worst, Rock Band 2 feels like a massive expansion pack." (3) "If your initial exposure to [Rock Band 2] was to walk into the room when your friends were already playing it, you'd probably think there was nothing different from the first Rock Band." (9) "If you're playing one of the songs from the original game, you could forget you're playing Rock Band 2." (7)

"Most folks... may be a bit disappointed to find World Tour largely unchanged." (4) Yes, "the World Tour mode itself is basically unchanged." (8) "The progression ... is almost completely identical to last year's, ... the world map uses the same art and the challenges are set up the same way as in the original." (4) "The World Tour hasn't changed too much." (1) "It's essentially the same show." (3) and "it's hard to notice the newness when there's a big chunk of game that is just the same as it ever was." (4)

"Even the graphics are mostly identical." (7) "All the core elements look virtually unchanged." (3) and "the old [venues] look pretty much the same as before - no new decor?" (3) "Also a let-down is the character creator. A few new faces, a new clothing store and some new tattoos do little to improve upon what was offered last year." (4) "While other games are going for the sliders that enable the player to create an in-game replica, ... RB2 seems to be sticking with a few cartoony looks to choose from and having the clothing make the man (or woman) instead." (9) "The new thrift shop doesn't offer as many new outfits as we'd expected, and characters show the same four animation-set 'attitudes.'" (3) "Since you can't do anything with money you earn in-game other than spend it at the Rock Shop, not offering better expanded support for this feature seems a little disappointing." (8) "We were hoping for a little more visual variety." (3)

As far as song selection, "we still need more songs that girls like to sing, and the game's music selection is approaching a nearly unbearable level of suburban whiteness." (6) "There are going to be a few tracks each person will not care for." (4) and "no matter what your preferences are, you'll likely end up despising 10 or 15 songs." (6) "Paramore is, you know, awful." (1) and "if one more person comes to my apartment and demands to sing 'Say It Ain't So,' I'm going break the disc in half." (6) As for Guns N' Roses big new song, Shackler's Revenge, it's "kind of bad" (1) and "unfortunately boring." (7)

"The [new guitar] sees mostly cosmetic fixes, adding no significant new functionality for guitarists." (7) Overall, it's "still inferior to previous Guitar Hero offerings." (4) As for the new drums, the velocity sensitivity "doesn't really have any impact on the gameplay. " (1) But the vocal gameplay is the worst. "A basic problem of the vocal technology that Harmonix uses is that it lets you pass songs without actually singing the on-screen lyrics; your voice just has to be on pitch. ... There are plenty of supposedly difficult vocals you can pass easily by just singing random consonants or repeating a particular word." (8) "It's stunningly easy to earn 100% on expert vocals in 'Give It Away' and 'Testify.'" (4) Also, "I'm still pretty disappointed by the pitch recognition in the singing section." (9)

A "closely derivative encore," (3) Rock Band 2 is "a collection of interface tweaks and non-earth-shattering new features." (6) "It doesn't reinvent the wheel," (5) it "isn't a vast overhaul of the Rock Band formula." (1) and it "still has its share of frustrating foibles and glitches." (9) In fact, it "doesn't do much to change the formula" (7) at all. In the end, Rock Band 2 is guilty of "often forgoing a great game experience in favor of a great music experience." (6) "Think of this as Rock Band 1.5 - or maybe a little less." (3)

And it came to pass/that the Rock Band 2 Nega-review was born!" As usual, this Nega-review takes the middling negatives from a bunch of overwhelmingly positive reviews and puts them together in a blistering package. The purpose isn't to denigrate a game that's obviously great, but simply to point out the small but valid flaws that sometimes get lost in the tsunami of positive coverage.

Interestingly, the main negative leveled in most of these reviews -- that the new game was too similar to the original Rock Band -- was not seen as a huge negative to most reviewers. Why not? Because the original Rock Band was awesome, they all seem to agree. Reviewers might not be so forgiving if the experience remains largely unchanged the next time around, though...

Sources
[1] Giant Bomb
[2] Gamer 2.0
[3] OXM
[4] IGN
[5] GamePro
[6] 1UP
[7] Yahoo!
[8] WorthPlaying
[9] TeamXbox

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Harmonix: 'No immediate plans' to put Jukebox Mode back into Rock Band 2

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

We were admittedly pretty bummed when our copy of Rock Band 2 was lacking a Jukebox mode, which would let our game go on autopilot while our virtual avatars rock out and we have some jamming party tunes and some fun visuals. The official word from Harmonix via a forum post is that the mode "was removed ... in the final stages of development. We have no immediate plans to bring this feature back to the platform in the future." The posting also reaffirmed that the 20 free DLC songs are still coming later this fall.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq sticks-on: Final thoughts on the ION Drum Rocker

Filed under: Features, Reviews, Microsoft Xbox 360, Peripherals, Rhythm

Since our initial impressions, we've had a few weeks to get used to the ION Drum Rocker set (a variant of the Alesis DM5 Pro set -- pedal, cymbals, pads/hardware). More importantly, we've had a few days to play on it with Rock Band 2. Is it worth the $300 cost of entry? Read on for our final thoughts.

Gallery: ION Drum Rocker: Unboxing, Set Up and Impressions

The ability to adjust your hardware is a double-edged sword. Having the freedom to do so is nice, but you'll spend a lot of time readjusting everything to fit your needs, not to mention if something isn't screwed in tight enough, your whole set might fall apart during a Pixies' song, as ours did. Particularly, the main screw used to keep the cymbals on the hardware needs to be at least another 1-2 mm longer, as it screws in only slightly to the other side and can easily pop out, causing the whole cymbal to slide out.

It probably goes without saying, but the Drum Rocker will take up a lot more room than your Rock Band set.

As an addendum to our previous post where we complained about the cymbals, ION sent us a new drum brain and that seemed to fix the problem. After some work, we were finally able to incorporate their use into our playing. It took a lot of extra effort, however, and it certainly didn't help our scoring at all. They do work well and are as responsive as the pads. We can't shake the mindset that the cymbals are anything more than a (quite expensive) novelty. The four pads are still there and they still work great.

Although we are being much less scientific here than with Kyle's experiment, with plastic-tip drum sticks the ION pads are indeed quieter than the Rock Band 1 set. It's worth noting that after about 10 songs with each play sessions, our wrists would start hurting, something that in the last year never happened with the RB1 set. The pads aren't as bouncy as the standard set but are much sturdier.

The pedal is still far superior to the standard set. You can also buy it separately for $50 and get a 1/4"-to-1/8" converter to use it with the standard set. It is a bit noisier than the RB pedal.

As a cheap electronic drum set, let's say this: Someone will find a way to make this work by plugging directly into a computer. Then again, that program will also likely work with the standard RB2 drum set ($90), which also has three cymbal ports and a second pedal port (something the ION set doesn't have without paying $40 for an expansion pedal). Although the cost of accessories are currently unknown, we're wagering the total would be much less than the $300 ION price tag. Alesis offers a drum module you can use for $360, but you'll also have to buy a second pedal for the hi-hat, rendering the total cost around $710.

We largely stand by our initial impressions. By merit of Rock Band's design, there's a limit to how authentic of a drum experience you will get with any peripheral (for fun, let's call it the "uncanny valley" of plastic peripherals). If you're looking to set up a pseudo-permanent "stage" for Rock Band parties, you might get a kick out of the ION Drum Rocker. However, if you're light on expendable cash and space in your room is a concern, this is not for you. The ION Drum Rocker is now shipping for Xbox 360, with PlayStation and Wii versions coming "later this year."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Are the Rock Band 2 instruments really quieter?
Drums
Each drum set tested will be placed on the floor at a set distance from a microphone hooked up to a laptop. The experimenter will record the sound of the drum pad strikes at three different intensity levels:

Light: Gravity pulls the drum stick down to the pad from a set height, with little to no additional force input from the experimenter.

Medium: The experimenter hits the pad with average force, as he/she would if playing the game.

Hard: The experimenter hits the pad as hard as possible.

For each intensity level, the experimenter will hit each pad three times. The microphone recording will be analyzed for the decibel rise of each strike above the baseline background noise. The results for each drum set and intensity level will be averaged and compared.

Guitars
Each guitar will be placed on a level surface, with the frets set next to a microphone hooked up to a laptop at a standard distance. The experimenter will hold down the guitar to prevent any undue vibrations, then press each fret in sequence at three different intensity levels.

Light: Each fret is pressed as gently as possible and depressed slowly to control the spring back.

Medium: Each fret is pressed sharply and allowed to spring back freely.

Hard: Each fret is pressed quickly and distinctly, as during an intense hammer-on section.

The microphone recording will be analyzed for the decibel rise of each strike above the baseline background noise. The results for each guitar and intensity level will be averaged and compared.

Results and Analysis

Drums

The difference in loudness at the light intensity, where the drum stick was simply allowed to fall onto the pad, was minimal. Both sets of drums were relatively quiet at this level, though the Rock Band 2 drums saw much more "bounce back" when the stick was allowed to drop.

The largest difference between the two drums was observed at the medium drum strike intensity, which was designed to emulate normal play conditions. While the difference in loudness is definitely noticeable, the Rock Band 2 drums did still have a noticeable "thwacking" sound at this level.

Surprisingly, the Rock Band 2 drums were actually overall a little louder when struck as hard as possible in our tests. Interestingly, the yellow and blue "inner" pads were louder on the Rock Band 2 set, while the red and green "outer" pads were louder on the original Rock Band set (see appendix below). For all practical purposes, these differences were negligible -- both drum sets are, unsurprisingly, incredibly loud when struck incredibly hard.

It should be noted that the natural springiness of the Rock Band 2 drums makes them much easier to play functionally at a lower intensity level. This means that the actual functional loudness of the drums during actual play may be significantly different than what is shown in these tests.

Guitar

At all intensity levels tested, the Rock Band 2 guitar frets were noticeably quieter than the original Rock Band guitar. The original guitar frets had a distinct "springy" sound when popping back up, a sound that was almost entirely absent in the Rock Band 2 guitar. It should also be noted that the spring for the strummer seems significantly quieter on the Rock Band 2 guitar, though the extent of the difference was not tested.

Conclusion
Rock Band 2 instruments are indeed quieter than their Rock Band counterparts under normal play conditions.
