The Warriors, Rockstar's 2005 game based on the 1979 cult movie, is coming to PSN next week. As per typical PS Store updates, it arrives in North America on May 28 for $9.99, and then in Europe the day after for £7.99/€9.99.

Rockstar Toronto reportedly worked on a spiritual successor to The Warriors, an Xbox 360 game called We Are The Mods. According to CVG, it was similar in style to The Warriors' urban brawling, but set in mid-1960s England, during the Mods and Rockers era.

Since that never came to fruition, the closest you're going to get to a current-gen Warriors game, outside of CTXM's The Warriors: Street Brawl, is next week's re-release. Like all PS2 Classics on PSN, it's only playable on PS3.
The Warriors rages onto PSN next week as PS2 Classic originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 May 2013 16:30:00 EST.
It's quite the week for content on Sony platforms, with several major releases making their debut on the PlayStation Network today. Metro: Last Light, the 4A Games' sequel salvaged by Deep Silver, launches today. If you haven't had a chance to read our review yet, be sure to give that a gander.

It's joined by CCP's EVE Online offshoot (get it?) Dust 514, available free to all PSN users. Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery eases its way onto PS Vita today as a $3 download, while Rockstar makes good on its promised Manhunt for $10.

PlayStation Plus subscribers' freebie this week is Knytt Underground, which is flanked by discounts on both Metro: Last Light and a special pre-order price on Grid 2. Rockstar North's stealth slash slaughter game, Manhunt, launches on PSN next week on May 14, available in the PS2 Classics section for $10. European PSN users will have to wait until Wednesday, when their store is updated.

In the announcement post, Rockstar also says the next game up for re-release is The Warriors. Manhunt joins Bully, Midnight Club 3, Red Dead Revolver and various Grand Theft Auto games, all available on PSN now.

The PS2 Classic generated much controversy when it launched in 2003 for its gruesome murder scenarios and animations - a few examples include suffocating enemies with plastic bags, strangling them with wire and eviscerating others with table saws. In 2007, Rockstar produced a sequel in Manhunt 2, which was banned in the UK for almost six months before it was cleared for launch.
Manhunt goes to PS2 Classics on May 14 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. Los Santos, a sub-urbane simulacrum of the auto-dependent Los Angeles, is the foundation for Rockstar North's next big heist, Grand Theft Auto 5. The studio's job is to create, not acquire: build the biggest playground yet, and fill it with more, more, more things to do.

The first thing we do is jump out of a helicopter. The mountains and snaking rivers below almost obscure the fact that there's a city just around the corner. Serenity is a rare quality in Grand Theft Auto, though I know the parachute is precursor to an inevitable descent into mayhem.

Later, protagonists Trevor, Michael and Franklin clear out an armored van in the dead of night, having blocked its route with a stolen truck. The police start arriving en masse, in waves, and Rockstar shows me the ease at which you can switch between your criminals. While Michael and wheelman Franklin are pinned down behind cover, you can leap into a manic Trevor and snipe from a distant tower.

The elaborate shootout demonstrates refinements in motion, combat and cover, Rockstar says. The driving is supposed to feel better too - another sign of the expected trajectory of improvement of the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar North aims to improve its monster of a game at every known level, from motion-captured walking animations and gunplay, ambiance, writing, and story-driven activities outside of the main plot. I haven't seen enough (or played any) to say how it all fits together, but there are three alterations that could put Grand Theft Auto 5 on your radar, even if, like many of Rockstar's subjects, you've been trying to elude a dour life.
Continue reading Three points of view on Grand Theft Auto 5

Three points of view on Grand Theft Auto 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 May 2013 15:15:00 EST. We've posted a new set of Grand Theft Auto 5 screenshots as prelude to some preview coverage later today. This batch shows off the trio of protagonists in the midst of a heist, as well as some underwater, likely more legal R&R.
The Complete Edition, stock game and DLC bundle - which includes a couple extra outfits and cases - have all been discounted by 75%, down to $7.50, $5 and $2.99, respectively.

The Rockstar Hits Collection is also on sale for $29.99. It's a Steam bundle that includes GTA IV and its Episodes from Liberty City expansion, Max Payne 3, and LA Noire. Pretty much every other Rockstar game on Steam right now is also on sale to varying degrees.

Recent PC arrival Brutal Legend joins the salesapalooza by slashing its price in half, down to $10 for the weekend starting now; if you want to pick up the soundtrack with the game, that'll be $12.49. Creator Tim Schafer of Double Fine Productions has stated he would "love" to revisit the game and add more stuff if the PC version does well.
Rockstar daily deals, cheap Brutal Legend highlight Steam weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. Sadly, just the tunes from Grand Theft Auto 3 and every entry since are here - none of Rockstar's zany commercials or satirical talk radio stations.

The only place to get the full soundtracks still is through Rockstar's box set releases; however, if you want to just listen to the ads, you can point your browser to The Advertising Council.

Rockstar recently revealed the box art for Grand Theft Auto 5, due on September 17 for Xbox 360 and PS3. As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days.

The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, in the hands of the woman on the left we can see a rather familiar-looking device...

Grand Theft Auto 5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.
Continue reading Grand Theft Auto 5 sticks with tried-and-true box art

Grand Theft Auto 5 sticks with tried-and-true box art originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 09:30:00 EST. At least that's what Rockstar is telling its fans:

"To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they're all nonsense - literally the only reason we've delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be," Rockstar writes in the comments of its launch date announcement.

When Rockstar first posted the September release date, it said, "We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time." While we study the weaknesses of your puny human race, we assume is how that originally ended.
Rockstar: Grand Theft Auto 5 delay for quality purposes only originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 20:00:00 EST. Run and Stun features one player as Saci, Captain Baseball Bat Boy's nemesis, whose goal is to kill each player in the map and turn them to his side. Marked Man makes Vendetta victories five times as lucrative as normal kills in Deathmatch mode; five points for completing a Vendetta and five points for walking away from a Vendetta match with your life. Time Attack applies to Deathmatch, too, adding a countdown clock after each kill: The faster you kill another enemy and string together streaks, the more points you get.

Deathmatch Made in Heaven and its fearsome foursome of multiplayer modes drops tomorrow for $10 or 800 MS Points, or free for those with a Rockstar Pass.
Max Payne 3 'Deathmatch Made in Heaven' adds 4 multiplayer modes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 03:30:00 EST. This morning the developer posted several screenshots on the company's site for Grand Theft Auto 5 to elicit speculation.

There's a swimming with sharks shot, along with a dog in the passenger seat of a car. Drive-by pooches confirmed?! There's also a mini submarine picture, as well as a shot featuring a commercial jet, a fighter jet and a blimp. No word yet if these are actual player-controlled vehicles for use in the game, but feel free to dream about that tonight, along with sugar plums dancing.
Grand Theft Auto 5 sharks, subs and pups be rollin' screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST. Rockstar is trying to make a case for downloading by discounting four of its top games through Xbox Live's Games on Demand service.

For today only, you can download LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and Midnight Club: LA for 33% off each - that comes out to $20 for LA Noire and Red Dead Redemption, $40 for Max Payne 3 and $10 for Midnight Club: LA. All of the games save for Max Payne 3 are going for more than their Games on Demand sale price on Amazon right now.

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention three of these games are included in Rockstar Games Collection 1. When this game was new ten years ago, it took an entire game console to get to play it, and now your damn telephone just happens to be powerful enough to also run this game as a bonus.

The $4.99 Universal App has been updated from the PS2 original and now features Retina-optimized HD graphics and the ability to listen to the music in your iTunes library as a radio station, which is actually pretty sweet. Just two days ago the petition had 41,000 signatures and today has exceeded 100,000. The new goal is to get 150,000 people on board.

Rockstar has yet to comment on the petition and has only confirmed GTA 5 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 so far. Count us among those wishing for a PC port, because GTA IV had some of the most inventive mods around.
Over 100,000 petition for PC port of Grand Theft Auto 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 14:45:00 EST. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick announced the franchise's new milestone at this year's Credit Suisse Technology Conference. GameSpot later confirmed it with a Take Two representative, who also disclosed the figure for GTA 4.

That means Take Two shipped 3 million copies of GTA 4 in the last 14 months, and 11 million franchise units. According to Zelnick, it's the irregular scheduling that maintains the series' popularity. Zelnick cited his understanding that Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is performing poorer commercially than Modern Warfare 3.

"That's never been the case with one of ours," said Zelnick. "Ours do better each time. Our view is it's hard to make permanent intellectual properties if you annualize it, with the exception of sports titles. So far that's proven to be the case. IP that is annualized eventually seems to hit the wall and we don't want our IP to hit the wall."

For the record, Activision recently announced Black Ops 2 made $500 million on its first day at retail, up from the $400 million for Modern Warfare 3.
Grand Theft Auto franchise up to 125 million shipped, GTA 4 at 25m originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 09:30:00 EST. We'll make it available again as soon as possible," a statement to Game Informer reads. Rockstar hasn't specifically called out which song(s) are at the heart of this dispute, but tells Game Informer this current licensing issue won't affect the upcoming mobile port.

Cinema Blend suggests it's Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something" that's the problem, which Sony Music Entertainment owns. If you've already purchased Vice City through Steam or your other favorite digital distributor, you should run into no problems installing and playing the game - unless you do, in which case you'll want to call your cousin Carl. He's real good with them computers.
GTA Vice City PC 'temporarily' pulled from digital distributors over music licensing issue originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 23:59:00 EST. Besides, Rockstar isn't about to let any console tell it how to live its life.

"Rockstar is a content company, not a hardware company," Houser says. "We use the technology we have to create content, and we try not to let ourselves get beholden to the hardware. The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level. GTA 4 was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult. Now we know what the hardware's capable of, so it's become a lot easier to move things along and a lot more fun, too."

Rockstar isn't only familiar with development for the current generation, but the consoles themselves are at their peak performance, Houser says:

"GTA: San Andreas came out at the peak of the PlayStation 2's cycle, and we put out a really good game thanks to that. All the best games for a console come out at the end of the life cycle, right? So now's the best timing of all."

The second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5 dropped today, starring the three main protagonists and a dog.
Why Grand Theft Auto 5 is sticking to current-gen systems originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 17:00:00 EST. The move, which popped up on radar this past weekend, is made possible by a partnership between the publisher and the state of Nevada, along with the city of Las Vegas.

"This move will allow 2K to operate a significantly larger and more effective QA facility as we continue to grow our business across all divisions," said 2K COO David Ismailer.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman noted, "We have a skilled and talented workforce in Las Vegas that is ideal for companies like Take-Two. I am so thrilled that they will be a part of the downtown community, and I know that their presence will attract other high-tech firms to Las Vegas."

Obviously, Take-Two made the move for some tax breaks. The publisher is also applying for "Catalyst Funds" from the state. The $10 million Catalyst Fund was created in 2011 and is designed to incentivize "the expansion or relocation of businesses that will quickly result in the creation of high-quality, primary jobs in Nevada."

Now, before you bring up that other government-financed debacle, let's be clear that there's a huge difference between $10 million and $75 million. Also, it doesn't appear Take-Two is seeking the whole enchilada.

Take-Two moving 2K QA to downtown Las Vegas originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 15:30:00 EST. Washington claimed he met with the game's developers in 2003 to discuss his troubled youth and "street life." He first learned of his resemblance to the game's "CJ" character six years later, leading to the $250 million lawsuit.

The California appeals court upheld the ruling in favor of Take-Two, in which the judge said the "plaintiff is relying entirely on CJ's physical appearance in the game, but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males." The lack of evidence in whether Take-Two actually used Washington's likeness, in addition to a failed test for insufficiently transformative use, led to Washington losing the case.
Backup singer loses lawsuit against Take-Two over GTA: San Andreas originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 12:00:00 EST. Pictures of what appears to be a little keychain image viewer have leaked, both revealing that as a pre-order bonus for the game and showing off some locations to be included in Rockstar's latest paean to the West Coast.

Looking through the viewfinder on the tiny accessory shows off not only the Zancudo River, but also the Vinewood Hills (a play on Hollywood), the Del Perro Pier (likely Santa Monica's landmark playground), the Vespucci Canals (with a view of downtown), and Grapeseed (a winery area that's likely a tip to California's Napa Valley).

Fans have also spotted a poster promoting the game (which you can see after the break below) featuring a woman wearing a Love Fist t-shirt, and a few of the keychain viewers reference an air travel company called "FlyUS", so it appears that GTA's usual parodic shenanigans are in order. We'll likely hear even more about this one in the next month or so, as Rockstar's promotional machine for the game finally starts kicking into gear.
Continue reading Grand Theft Auto 5 promotional materials, in-game locations leak out

Grand Theft Auto 5 promotional materials, in-game locations leak out originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 18:30:00 EST. At the end of the day, however, the company did have a net loss of $12.5 million, which is still significantly better than the $123.3 loss from the same period last year.

The big gun during the quarter was Borderlands 2, which shipped over 5 million units, along with catalog sales of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption. Revenue from digital distribution was up 108 percent year-over-year, with "strong digital sales" (i.e. non-retail) mentioned for new releases Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

With Grand Theft Auto 5 officially given a spring 2013 release window, it should be noted that Take-Two reduced its "financial outlook" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, removing $600 million in forecasted sales. That extra $600 million raised our eyebrows when it appeared in the company's projections at the beginning of the fiscal year, as the math would only really work out if Take-Two was planning GTA 5 before April 1, 2013. That is, obviously, no longer the case and the company has reduced its outlook to "reflect its revised assumed release schedule."
Take-Two revenue up 155% during Q2, outlook removes $600 million following GTA 5 delay originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 10:00:00 EST. Rockstar also announced that, to celebrate the 2002 game's landmark, the new versions will include unseen assets and artwork. Rockstar didn't reveal a price or release date, but for reference GTA 3 went on sale at $4.99 on both platforms.

Vice City hitting iOS and Android may well mark the coming of the final entry in GTA's PlayStation 2 triad. Not only is it logical, but around this time last year Rockstar said upcoming iOS ports of both Vice City and San Andreas were "very possible." The first has come to pass, so don't be surprised if you're visiting Los Santos on your iPad in a year's time.

Update: As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, GTA 3 is now on sale on iOS and Android, and Chinatown Wars on iOS. Each version's going for 99 cents for a limited time.

Continue reading Grand Theft Auto: Vice City cruising onto iOS, Android this fall [update: GTA sales]

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City cruising onto iOS, Android this fall [update: GTA sales] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 08:30:00 EST. Today Rockstar dated the pack for October 30 on all platforms.

Hostage Negotiation adds four new multiplayer maps - Club Moderno and Estádio Do Galatians, and the favelas of O Palácio Strip Club and Favela Heights - to Max Payne 3, plus two new rifles, a new Explosive Burst booby trap and additional cosmetic options, and a new avatar faction.
