Readers currently residing in the United Kingdom -- your wait is over. At long last, you'll be able to experience one of 2007's best selling, most critically acclaimed titles -- Rockstar's controversial thriller, Manhunt 2. After being turned down by the British Board of Film Classification for its "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone," a reworked, SFEurope version of the game will be launched in the UK for the Wii, PS2 and PSP on October 31. We know, we can barely contain our excitement either.

Sure, it may lack a few of the more grisly elements included in the inappropriate North American version, but if your hands are shaking with anticipation as you read this report -- as we're sure they are -- we imagine you'll be able to overlook a few omitted acts of power drill-related violence.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumorang: Max Payne 3 won't stay dead

According to CVG, Xbox World 360 magazine (also owned by Future Publishing) claims that Max Payne 3 is being produced internally at Rockstar Toronto, the team behind The Warriors. This follows rumors by EGM that the game is currently in development.

Original Max Payne developer, Remedy, is currently <strike>picking its nose</strike> hard at work on Alan Wake. There's currently no timetable for when (or if) Max Payne 3 will become official. We've contacted the folks at Take-Two in the hopes that they'll shed some light on the issue.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GTA Chinatown Wars drug-dealing minigame elicits 'fury' from UK drug support group

Well, that certainly didn't take long. Along with Wednesday's revelation that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars would include a drug-dealing minigame came a potent tingling of our "controversy-sense" -- said tingle was justified Thursday by an article in the British tabloid The Sun, titled Fury Over Drug Deal Vid Game. In the article, Darren Gold, speaking on behalf of UK support group Drugsline, called out the title for its "glamorization" of drug-dealing and "substance misuse".

In related, breaking news, Rockstar may thoroughly enjoy the game-selling hype that arises from this kind of controversy. More at eleven!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GTA Chinatown Wars maintains gritty, urban edge with drug-dealing minigame

Coke, heroin, weed, acid and the blue pill confirmed. There was a time when a sensational cocktail like this would have raised red flags at media headquarters everywhere, but this is Grand Theft Auto, like, "Grand Theft Auto 8!" We've been down this road before and we know where it leads ... to a penthouse, deep pockets, and a dried up sandbox. So what if it's on DS? Chinatown Wars isn't a kid's game, but like all GTAs, it's the game kids want to play. And if they do get their hands on it, they'll be -- surprise! -- forced to deal drugs. "It works well with what GTA is, with driving around the map, and it gives you another thing to think about -- another layer or piece of the puzzle to keep you motivated," Rockstar boss Dan Houser explained to Edge. Motivational tool, eh? Good one.

[Update: Added image, direct from the folks at T3 magazine.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rockstar: GTA for Wii 'didn't feel natural'

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Action

The long-in-development L.A. Noire, a collaboration between Rockstar and ex-Getaway alumni at Australia's Team Bondi, may no longer be exclusive to PlayStation 3. The title - which has been shrouded in mystery befitting of its film noire trappings - was originally rumored to be bankrolled by Sony itself for release solely on its platform.

Speaking at GC Asia '08, Game Developers' Association of Australia president Tom Crago said that, from what he surmises, development on the game has "another year or so to go." He also revealed that it "could be the biggest budget video game in development anywhere in the world," calling it a "massive, massive project." Crago also indicated that the game is in development for both PS3 and 360, which, if true, would rule it out as the PS3-exclusive Rockstar project Sony has been touting once and for all.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

... With "tasteful" minigames. Indeed, Nintendo Power has published the first comprehensive preview of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, according to details provided by NeoGAF poster botticus. The relayed information (in handy bullet-point format), describes Chinatown Wars as a "true GTA game," which is to say, a Mature-themed sandbox game concerned with all things criminal (just like the survey said). The DS technology limits gameplay to an isometric camera angle with cel-shaded visuals, though the load times, draw distance and frame rate are reportedly sound; and weather effects, along with a day and night cycle are in tact. The preview claims there are plenty of on-screen pedestrians and cars -- speaking of: there are multiple radio stations, mostly juiced with instrumental tunes. All in all, "800,000 lines of hand-optimized source code" are packed into the tiny cart.

What else? Chinatown Wars is said to return players to a sizeable portion of Liberty City (wild guess: Chinatown?), though the map has been altered from the console version. Missions will also be shortened and can be easily restarted upon failure. The D-pad is used for aiming, while the R-button activates auto-targeting; and there's "subtle" auto-steering built into the driving controls. The touch pad will be used for the aforementioned minigames, in addition to navigating the PDA-like UI, which includes email, contacts, the map, a music player, GPS, and stat-tracking (stats can be Wi-Fied to the Social Club). Now, how about some, uh ... scans? (Or better: screens! C'mon Rockstar, with this game scheduled to release in mere months, throw us a friggin' bone or two!)

Update: Gamekyo's got some scans right here. At last, confirmation that doesn't come from a nebulous internet entity or a gravelly voiced figure in a trench coat. Not that we have anything against those two fine and often charismatic sources of information, but we're just a teensy bit more confident in Microsoft's confirmation (and corroboration) to us that "exclusive episodes for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' will be available on Xbox 360 starting fall 2008." That's quite a bit better than the rumored January, we think.

Details regarding the crime caper's new episodes are still officially non-existent, but nebulous internet entities and gravelly voiced figures in trench coats all agree: it'll likely involve car theft and other illegal shenanigans.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Midnight Club: Los Angeles pushed back to Oct. 21

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Driving

It wasn't all good news in Take-Two's stellar third-quarter earnings report and conference call today, as the company announced that the release date for Midnight Club: Los Angeles has been pushed back to Oct. 21 in North America and Oct. 24 in Europe. The new date follows previously announced North American dates of Oct. 7 and Sept. 9 for the game's release. Take-Two said the extra time is being used to help polish up the game and to make sure its release doesn't get lost amidst a competitive holiday schedule. Here's hoping this one finally sticks.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars hits DS this winter

<strike></strike>

During its end-of-quarter financial phone call today, Take-Two confirmed that GTA: Chinatown Wars will be released on Nintendo DS this winter, which, according to its fiscal year, would mean no sooner than November and no later than January 31, 2009. This is the first official word on a release window for the game, which was unveiled at this year's E3.

No further details were provided - one member of the press asked if the game was still due before Christmas, to which Take-Two brass responded, "We didn't say that. We're not confirming that." - so for now we just have hints at Wi-Fi play and some juicy potential gameplay details from a leaked consumer survey to go on.

Take-Two Interactive's third-quarter fiscal results have proven that crime really does pay, with law-breaking blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV leading sales, alongside Top Spin 3 and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. The three-month financial period, ended July 31, 2008, saw the publisher rake in net revenues of $433.8 million, nearly double the $206.4 million it earned during the same, GTA-less quarter of 2007.

If you're reading this paragraph, we can only assume that you're keen on seeing even more numbers. Like $51.8 million, Take-Two's net income for the quarter and a considerable improvement on last year's net loss of $58.5 million. In terms of notable expenses, Take-Two burned through $12.6 million in "stock-based compensation," $1.8 million for "business reorganization" and $5.4 million for "professional fees and legal expenses," primarily aimed at warding off the advances of EA. Finally, net revenues for Take-Two's first three quarters in total were just over $1.2 billion, versus $689.2 million for the same period a year ago.

In summary: Grand Theft Auto IV = money.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: GTA IV DLC actually, really coming this November

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

(Puzzlingly, each insisted that the other had just bought a pony and ice cream farm, which doesn't even make sense.) Why are we choosing this Thursday morning to flashback to that awkward moment? Once again, we don't know who to believe.

Last month, VG247 had a super secret Rockstar source telling them that the Grand Theft Auto IV DLC wouldn't be available until January. Now, Eurogamer has a different super secret source saying that things are still on track for a November release. We don't know which one is telling the truth, and we don't care ... we just want one of them to love us.

Although Microsoft has hinted at an autumn arrival for the 360's long-awaited, exclusive GTA IV downloadable content, a "source close to Rockstar" has told VG247 "nuh-uh." Of all of the people who make crap up on the internet, the enigmatic EGM rumormonger Quartermann seems to be the most accurate. This could be because Quartermann is just an amalgamation of different EGM editors and they hear some fairly juicy stuff in their day-to-day, like (for example) the rumor that the same Rockstar team that made The Warriors is busy toiling on Max Payne 3, presumably to cash in on the upcoming movie.

With original devs Remedy hard at work on Alan Wake and Rockstar Toronto not working on anything that we know of, it would seem to add up. In a more nebulous vein, Quartermann also says that Rockstar North, the team behind GTA IV, is hard at work on a PS3 exclusive. You'll know if this rumor is ever confirmed, however, when you see PS3 fanboys with an otherworldly glow and floating a few inches off the ground as a choir of angels sings in the background. Mad World, with its inky wellspring of monochrome gore, will likely give those opposed to virtual violence another round of ammunition, replacing Manhunt 2 as the industry whipping boy of choice. An unfair comparison, at least according to seasoned game journo Beth Dillon, who cites the controversy magnet's realistic take on violence as much more disturbing than Mad World's "contrasting and beautiful" approach.

There's no question that Mad World will stand out like a bludgeoned thumb among the Wii's more family-friendly library, but Dillon writes that where Platinum Games' upcoming action opus separates itself from Manhunt 2 is in its sense of style. The bigger issue, as she she sees it, is the effect motion-sensitive controls have on players playing violent games -- regardless if they're realistic or more over-the-top -- something we fully expect to have society's ills pinned on the game industry's already swollen posterior for years to come.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GC 2008: GTA IV adds replay editor, polish on PC

Rockstar has laid out details on some of the additions and improvements in store for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV. Eurogamer reports that the version it was shown at Leipzig featured more realistic lighting, animation, and "a much higher level of detail on both characters and environments."

More intriguing is a replay editor. According to Rockstar, the PC version of GTA IV is always recording the previous 30 seconds worth of gameplay, so you can pause at any time and really soak up the calamity that's just transpired. It will also be possible to tweak the footage by means of filters, cuts, and repositioning of the camera. The completed clip can be combined with other 30 second snippets into one long, personal crime epic to share with friends via the Rockstar Social Club website.

The PC version will also expand on the consoles' 16-player online component, although the extent of what's planned is largely unknown beyond there being more filters for finding specific match types.

Looks like the kids of Bullworth Academy are ready to practice their delinquency on PC. Eurogamer notes that a poster in the Leipzig Games Convention has the Bully logo with the words: "Demnachst fur PC."

We're positive some umlauts belong in there, but the basic message is that Bully is coming to PC "soon." Rockstar will probably make an official announcement sometime during the convention.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Take Two promotes former Rockstar vet to COO

Right about now Take-Two exec Gary Dale is likely placing an order to change the plaque on his office door. The publisher sent word this afternoon that the executive VP has been promoted to the position of chief operating officer, a role with which he should be intimately familiar, having previously served as Rockstar's COO during 2007.

Currently the scope of Dale's new responsibilities remain vague, Take-Two noting only that he will continue to oversee the company's sales, international footprint, and business development, while keeping a watchful eye on the firm's various publishing labels. Take-Two CEO Ben Feder also emphasized Dale's role in the publisher's continuing growth, something we imagine will put the exec on the front lines, defending Take-Two from EA's insatiable hunger.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Study: Parents corrupting unsullied children with killer game

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360

A recent study conducted by Nielsen Games has uncovered an unsavory and alarming new link in the video game industry's ever-tightening chain around our nation's youth. It was found that 17% of respondents in the survey who had purchased a copy of the popular role-model pummeling game, "Grand Theft Auto IV," were between the ages of seven and sixteen. The crime glorification simulation, which imparts "gamer points" for beating innocent police officers to death with decapitated prostitute bodies, was rated "M" for "Mature."

The most distressing news lies not in the fact that 61% of impressionable youths had been tricked into purchasing the games themselves by slick marketing and peer pressure, but the shocking revelation that 39% had been aided by someone else -- in 80% of these cases, parents themselves had thrust their child's ripe brain beneath the industry's oppressive mallet.

Speaking exclusively to Joystiq, renowned child psychologist Dr. Alphred Larmist described this turn of events as "the ultimate betrayal." According to him, parents could be the most dangerous conduit of pixelated poison. "Parents getting involved is the last thing we need," Larmist said. "If they take an active role in what entertainment their children partake in, this is the sort of disaster that could happen. Next thing you know, they're determining what's appropriate for the kids and going out and buying Grand Theft Auto. They're supposed to be on our side."

Dr. Larmist vowed he would take up the campaign to keep parents and their influence away from children. "If nothing is done, these video gamers will reduce our society to naught but chainsaws having bloody sex with each other."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Grand Theft Auto IV hitting PC on Nov. 18
