The STRaND 2 satellites will be the smallest yet to link up in orbit.

We think this raises the Gaming vs. Miscellaneous Uses For Kinect tally to 36-5,690, or something in that area. Space points count as triple, because seriously, that's awesome.
First Kinect in space is like the first dog in space but it has more use originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 May 2012 18:30:00 EST. GeoEye's $100 million dollar commercial-use satellite imagery system will serve as the backdrop for Ubisoft's upcoming air-combat title, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. The Washington D.C.-based company -- that supplies data for Google Earth, among others -- allowed Ubisoft access to satellites 423 miles high to photograph real-world locations for the game's multiple missions. How powerful can a 423 mile high satellite be? The GeoEye-1 satellite that launched in September has the capacity to see objects on the ground that are just 16 inches long.

VP of communications at GeoEye, Mark Brender, told Venture Beat that using such a sophisticated technology to map H.A.W.X. will help in "immersing the player in the experience" rather than using "cartoon maps." So, a South Park, Colorado, mission cannot be confirmed at this time.
$100 million GeoEye satellite used to map Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 22:20:00 EST. Ever want the whole world in your hands? YouTube user zachetus has turned his PSP into a remote control for the NASA World Wind program. This will become really helpful when satellite data gets strong enough so we can peek into showers. Yes, "helpful" is the word I'd use in a scenario like that...

Speaking of creepy, YouTube user EnKeRaDc has a torrid love affair with his PSP. He makes a very disturbing tribute video to his somehow broken handheld. I like my PSP, but this guy took being a fanboy to a whole new, scary, level.

Now what? You get MapThis! from Deniska. The program uses Google Maps, so it should work all around the world. The maps are customizable, and can even show satellite and hybrid maps. Interestingly, the program works on every version of PSP (albeit a bit differently), so those with firmware 1.0 or 2.7 can enjoy Deniska's ambitious project.

You can see a video after the cut.
