Silent Hill 5 was just announced at Konami's E3 press conference. A mysterious poem drove the fan community to rampant speculation, wondering what the Konamegaton would be. Silent Hill 5 will appear on both PS3 and Xbox 360. Expect more details in the future.

Silent Hill V confirmed for PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 22:00:00 EST. Most prominent is that PaRappa the Rapper 3 is coming to PlayStation 3, and "none of the that ported PSP nonsense."

Another eye-catcher is that Silent Hill 5 is being developed "by a US team" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PSP Silent Hill Origins is currently in development by US-based Climax Group. The third teaser from 1UP is more of a no-brainer: "Electronic Arts isn't happy just controlling the NFL -- they want the MLB and NBA, too." We never really thought EA would stop until they had every sport from Football to Segway polo under their belt.

Joystiq's Kyle Orland calculated that Quartermann's rumors "are just as likely to be true as they are false," so flip a coin for Silent Hill 5 and PaRappa 3. Ya gotta believe!

Konami's upcoming Silent Hill Origins game is surrounded in mystery. Plagued with troubled development, the title has gone through a phoenix-like resurrection of sorts, quickly becoming one of the most anticipated titles on the platform yet again. A new interview with Kikizo doesn't reveal anything new, but it does reiterate the focus of the franchise. Oertel explains, "You're going to a town that has multiple shifts in reality with people that have their own kind of dementia. How do you put a realistic spin on that? By it's nature it needs to be somewhat vague." Supposedly, multiple endings will help create a sense of impenetrable mystery.

True to the franchise, Origins is all about atmosphere and tension. Although the development team is trying to explain even more of the lore, don't expect the answers to be clear: "We want to take advantage of that opportunity to explain some things - not everything."

While we love being teased, we can't wait to get some more information on Origins. Until then, don't forget to check out our updated gallery.

Keeping Silent Hill players in the dark originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 13:15:00 EST. Others, however, prefer the mind-rending psychological nightmare that is Silent Hill. A proper entry in the series hasn't been seen since 2004's Silent Hill 4: The Room, which departed heavily from the typical Silent Hill formula. Ever since, fans have been wondering about the inevitable new-gen sequel without much help from the series' publisher, Konami. In fact, Konami has yet to officially announce the existence of Silent Hill 5 at all. In a recent interview with Dengeki PlayStation (unearthed by SilentHill5.net) Silent Hill 5's chief designer, Masahashi Tsuboyama, is nearly as vague as the series itself. When asked about the platforms on which the game might appear, Tsuboyama states that a console has not been chosen. He also says that multi-platform status is not out of the question either. He further adds that the 360 is "definitely a candidate," he likes Blu-Ray, and he believes Silent Hill probably isn't a good fit for the Wii.

So, no definite confirmation then. Fear not Silent Hill aficionados, for there is a ray of hope. Konami's E3 press conference is slated for July 11th. Let's hope we get a real glimpse of Silent Hill 5 by then.
Konami still uncertain of Silent Hill 5 platform originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. With the rise of music download services, that situation has changed. First we had some Final Fantasy soundtracks on iTunes, then the Mother 3 OST, and now the best news of all: Konami has made a deal with Sony BMG to make their entire music catalog available on download services.

Naturally, we'll be loading up with Castlevania music, but Konami has a very large collection of notable game soundtracks that at least deserve a previewing: the Metal Gear Solid series, Contra, Goemon/Mystical Ninja, and Akira Yamaoka's brilliant Silent Hill work. We don't know when Konami will start releasing music on iTunes/Rhapsody/your favorite download service, and we don't know what the order of releases will be. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Silent Hill: Origins producer William Oertel confirmed previous rumors that the game met serious problems during its production. The solution, it appears, was to switch development teams altogether. "Game development isn't an exact science, and sometimes you need to go back and adjust some things. In this case, it has been for the best. It was decided that moving development to Climax's Portsmouth office would be best for the game, and that introduced delays."

As evidenced by the most recent video footage, the game has certainly come a long way, and we're excited to find out more. It's clear that Origins is in good hands, with the producers understanding what makes a Silent Hill game so unique. "As I'm fond of saying, Silent Hill is an exercise in subtlety, and therefore the changes seen in this game, compared to previous games, reflect that."

[Via PSP GadgetZ]
Silent Hill interview confirms development troubles originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 12:00:00 EST. IGN spoke with the game's producer, William Oertel, who spoke a little bit about creating the title: "When first conceiving the idea of Silent Hill on the PSP, the recurrent thought was to do a remake of the original Silent Hill. While some fans would have loved to have seen this, we decided it was better to take the opportunity to build on the rich story encompassed by the series. Doing a prequel (of sorts) allowed us to also touch on some of the moments in the original Silent Hill and present them in a new and different way. The story behind the town is really a story of the characters we've seen in past games. So, the game reveals part of their history, such as Alessa, Dr. Kaufmann and Dahlia, as well as adding a new character, Travis."

It's great to see Konami offer yet another high profile, original game for the platform. Hope you didn't just eat lunch. Silent Hill: Origins is back, and it looks better than ever. Turn off the lights, get your security blanket, and snuggle up to these devilishly violent videos of the game in action. The game seems to have moved away from its Resident Evil 4 inspired camera, while gaining some context sensitive action buttons. Of course, none of this analysis will really matter as you watch this bone-chilling footage.

Remember, kids. You have to be 18 or older to see footage from this obviously M-rated game.
Continue reading Brutally violent Silent Hill gameplay vids

Brutally violent Silent Hill gameplay vids originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. Our first reaction is to be outraged. We love our system and we love Silent Hill and its atmospheric, psychological horror storytelling.

But would we actually love them together? The larger question here extends beyond the boundaries of one foggy town: is the DS an appropriate format for survival horror? We had one outing already in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, which a very trustworthy source tells us wasn't an entirely successful experiment.

Alternately, if the major discussion topic doesn't interest you, we can just talk about Silent Hill and how great it is.
DS Daily: Survival horror originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. Silent Hill: Origins had seemingly disappeared from the public eye, with many (including ourselves) fearing its cancellation. The game showed early promise, with impressive graphics and Resident Evil 4-style gameplay. However, it wasn't long until there were reports of troubled development: Climax, the game's developer, laid off numerous employees. Then, it was conspicuously absent from Konami's Gamers Day.

Well, looks our fears were unwarranted. Game Informer has a new exclusive preview up: "The kicker was that even though the game was on a much smaller screen, our hands sweated and heart pounded as if we were playing a full-on entry in the series. If you're sensitive to scary content you'll probably not be playing this with the lights out and headphones on like the game recommends. With that said, it looks like Climax is on the right track with Origins."

We're incredibly relieved that the game has taken a turn for the better. Akira Yamaoka recently sat down with the German side of GamePro and spilled the beans on some details of the title. Oddly, not much has changed from when we last talked about the game, but that's a good thing because the game seemed like it was on the right track. We'll summarize the interview.

The game, as previously told, will resemble the best Silent Hill game in terms of player direction and character behavior. The best is, easily, Silent Hill 2.

The game's platform is still up in the air. PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 are obvious choices, but Akira hints at what may be a timed exclusive by saying that "we have had a good past experience with Playstation [where the series was born] and we hope to continue that trend."

Akira will probably be lead sound guy again, which is great.

They're not going to adopt the system used in the PSP Silent Hill: Origins because Akira said it didn't show off enough of the environment and surroundings... and that's what makes the games so awesome.

Short interview, but it gives us a clear enough idea of what to expect. Still no scans floating around, although we're sure that'll change sooner or later. Come on, Konami, let's get this game rolling!
Silent Hill 5 may be a timed exclusive to PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 13:00:00 EST. Scroll about one-third of the way down and you'll see what we're talking about. What you're looking at is, undoubtedly, a Silent Hill arcade shooting title. While the translation is about as babble-free as that lovely brook outside of your uncle's country cabin (meaning it is full of it), we've gleaned a couple of things from this.

Two players! ...Of course.

Unlike most arcade shooters, you have 100 health (a la Wolfenstein, etc) to begin with instead of the two or three allowed hits.

Multiple endings and branching paths like House of the Dead titles.

Fight such familiar entities as freaky nurses, puppets, zombies (?), and Pyramid Head.

Will we see this thing stateside? Chances are low, but stranger things have happened. Does it go against the whole meaning behind Silent Hill, moving from psychological horror and into frantic shooting action? Probably. Still, it's worth noting just because we love Silent Hill so very much.
Silent Hill hits... the arcade circuit? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Feb 2007 16:30:00 EST. Well, Konami doesn't care: pay your money, take your choice. Silent Hill: The Arcade, unveiled today at AOU 2007, replicates the chilling atmosphere of your darkened living room with... a little black curtain. While PSP gamers are certainly happy by the surprise announcement of an exclusive Castlevania, there is one game that was suspiciously missing: Silent Hill: Origins. The game had a very impressive debut, but ever since rumors of troubled development came about, the game has mysteriously disappeared from public eye.

Hotly anticipated games like Metal Gear Solid 4 were also absent from the show.
Sony requires any game ported to the PSP to have extra content not found in other versions of that same title, but that's not what this post is about. A strange thing has happened to game franchises on the PSP, sometimes their best showing is on the portable. Can a franchise that you loathe be loved on the PSP? Well it has happened to me ...twice already.

Syphon Filter is a gaming series that I just couldn't stand on the Playstation or Playstation 2. I disliked the graphics, animation and gameplay of every version I tried. Even fams of Syphon Filter seemed to hate the last one that came out on PS2. So when a Syphon Filter game was announced on PSP, I was as interested in it as I was about castration. When reviews started to pour out that stating the game was incredible I lost respect for every reviewer that enjoyed it. Then one day while adding games to my Gamefly Q I decided to put Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror on the list. I didn't do it because I expected to enjoy the game, but rather so I could validate my hatred for the franchise.

Continued after the jump...

Better on PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 07:53:00 EST. In an interview with French-language site DVDrama, Gans hopes that the Roger Avery-penned sequel will retain the visual aesthetic of the first film should he be too busy adapting an Onimusha film to take the director's chair. In his hypotehtical absence, Gans would like a European director to take his stead so as to avoid making the film "too Hollywood" (loose translation).

Of course, some continuity issues run amok if the films follow the same timeline as the games, most notably the inclusion of Pyramid Head; we'll spare you the spoilers and let you read the film's Wiki page if you are curious. The original Silent Hill film, after initial dismay, eventually grew on me as a mediocre horror flick that proved itself better than a multitude of other game adaptations. Gans hopes that sequel will correct the mistakes of the first movie; let's hope it does so we can finally have a decent game-film to hold up as a pillar by which to compare the rest.

[Via Digital Battle]
Another Silent Hill film in the cards originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Dec 2006 14:25:00 EST. For the PS3? Would that even be a surprise? As a matter of fact, it wouldn't be very far off to assume it'll also come to the 360 -- all but the original went multi-platform. Which is a shame... the first one really is my favorite, even though the graphics have hindered the spook factor for me anymore (therefore, Silent Hill 2 is currently the reigning champion of creepy). Anyway, if you check out the English translation for the JeuxFrance article, you can get a feel for what the rumor is and what the game will play like.

"CPM the U.K." has the scoop, apparently, telling us matter-of-factly that SH5 is in development. So, what will the game play like? Get ready, because if this is true, I'm stoked. Earlier rumors indicated that the fifth title would resemble the fourth in many ways (even though Silent Hill 4: The Room wasn't even initially part of the Silent Hill universe -- Konami changed that to boost recognition and sales... and it turned out all right. You learn a bit about the crazy people from Silent Hill without actually having to visit it. Which is awesome -- I love intertwining but seemingly unrelated stories) but this is not so anymore. Recent rumors say that the fifth installment would more closely resemble the atmosphere and mood of Silent Hill 2 -- if you watch X-Play and saw their top 10 scariest games of all time episode, you know that this game was number 1. Anyway, sorry to fly off the handle so many times -- this is another of my favorite franchises. Interesting how, while I love RPG's, most of my "all time favorites" aren't such games. Hmm. Take this rumor with a pinch of salt!
Silent Hill 5 for the PS3 -- oh yeah, it's on originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 13:30:00 EST. His latest project is a DS adaptation of Soichiro Ishihara's Otonaryoku. Translated as "Adult Power," Otonaryoku is a self-help guide to improving relationships through the mastery of rules and manners.

It's unclear how the themes from Otonaryoku will be used in conjunction with Yamaoka's game. We fear it'll be another drab software trainer, undoubtedly a hit in Japan's quirk-obsessed market, but too obscure to reach beyond. But who knows, maybe Yamaoka's creepy imagination will be permitted to bend the rules.
From Silent Hill to rules and manners originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Nov 2006 18:45:00 EST. The game's developer, Climax, recently laid off 14 of its workers in order to "integrate into a single management structure." (Source: Gamespot) According to Kotaku (you should already put on your "doubt" visors), the main reasoning behind the lay-offs was to "salvage the disastrous development of Silent Hill Origins for the PSP." The article continues to state that "the game had been cut extensively... shriveled down to a handful of much smaller levels and three to four hours of gameplay... Konami was understandably disappointed... and employees were told there were "no assurances" that the Origins project would continue."

While it would be disastrous if this rumor were true, I'm going to take a leap of faith and say it's untrue. The Kotaku report states that a working engine wasn't made available until June, which sounds false considering the game's incredible graphics engine (which was playable). Secondly, I highly doubt the folks at Konami would allow for a high-caliber project like this to fall apart, especially with their other high-profile PSP titles coming down the pipeline. Lastly, a developer in supposedly as much trouble as Climax wouldn't also be working on another high-profile game: Oblivion for the PSP. Climax is a relatively prolific developer: a few layoffs most likely won't affect the future of any of the games in development.

[Via PSP-Vault]
Rumor: Silent Hill Origins in trouble? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 20:45:00 EST. It's pretty safe to say that the Nintendo Wii "won" the last E3, proving that waving around our hands can be fun. Not only did the Wii prove that the control scheme works, there was an amazing list of exclusives, from Nintendo's own Mario to third party efforts, like Red Steel. Nintendo wowed the crowd at E3 because of the amazing quality and potential of the games for its system.

Did Nintendo pull the big win at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany this year? No. Did Microsoft? No. Sony took the win for this year's show, but not because of a great showing of PlayStation 3 goods (there were none at the show), but because of Konami's absolutely excellent lineup of upcoming PSP games. Yes, you heard me right: PSP "won" Leipzig.
Continue reading The winner of Leipzig? A few hours ago, we revealed the very first footage of the game in motion. Now, Konami has revealed an official trailer from <strike>the Games Convention in Germany</strike> Konami's Gamer Day, and it is absolutely mind-blowingly beautiful. Comparing the game to Resident Evil 4 seems apt, not only because of the gameplay, but because of the insane quality of the graphics. Watch and be amazed.

[Update 1: Footage actually from Konami's Gamer Day, not Games Convention. Also, Gamespot has added two excellent gameplay videos to their site. They seem to feature some awkward hit detection and camera, but hopefully that'll be worked out soon. Check out video 1 here and video 2 here.]

[Update 2: A video interview with the producer reveals that the playable build is very early, with most everything being placeholders. So, yes... the graphics and the animations are going to be much better. Players of the original Silent Hill be able to experience how the town became the way it did, but the main character of the game is not responsible for it. The town will be a mix of old and new, with two thirds of it being new. The game will be large: "a good size PSP game." PSP Fanboy once wrote: "So how about a port of Resident Evil 4? The new over-the-shoulder camera style would be perfect for the handheld!"

Well, we might not have Resident Evil yet, but it looks like Silent Hill Origins will fit the bill just nicely. This first gameplay video (delivered by Playstation Portable.de) leaked from the floors of the Games Convention in Germany doesn't show off any enemies, but it shows some particularly nice graphics (the fog looks great), atmosphere and familiar controls. Hopefully we'll discover more nuggets of gameplay over the course of the convention, so keep it locked in to the Fanboy.

[Update 1: According to PSP World, the game will offer "a cinematic experience comparable to the previous games, but framed within interactive moments." The exclusives keep on hitting the PSP. Konami showcased Silent Hill Origins for the PSP and GTtv caught up with Producer William Oertel to find out more about the game. You can just watch the video embedded above, but here are some of the more interesting details he points out:

It's a prequel to the original Silent Hill, not a remake.

"[The main character] is an interesting character... he's a little bit more physical... he's not too emo."

"It's going to be a much more personal experience than playing on the console."

The barricade system modifies controls so that it changes constantly, making it much more interesting and dynamic.

"It's a huge game."

It seems like Konami's placing a lot of effort into their PSP efforts, and they have to be commended for that. This game, along with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, show that the company knows what it's doing.
Silent Hill Origins - Comic-Con interview originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Jul 2006 22:10:00 EST. These five AAA titles should be available when the emulation service launches:
Common sense dictates that this is simply an alternate title for the forthcoming PSP remake of the original game, titled Silent Hill: Original Sin. Rampant desire and unlikely to be fulfilled dreams, however, suggest that it's the name of the gloriously rendered PS3 version of Harry's twisted quest to find "a little girl with black hair" and his occasional run-ins with deranged cultists, meat monsters (with sewing machines for hands) and deserted wheelchairs. I can hope, right?

It's great that the original game in an excellent series is being revisited, but I'm dubious of how well a portable platform will be able to reproduce the qualities of Silent Hill. Immersion may be difficult to pull off successfully in a handheld device, but given its video and audio capabilities, the PSP is likely to be the best choice for a survival horror title.
Silent Hill: Origins poster at E3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 07 May 2006 22:00:00 EST. This nerdy: "I collect and restorevintage Atari XY monitor games like Lunar Lander and Battlezone -- only vector, only Atari."

He talks about the collaboration with Gans, his respect for the source material, his similarities with Uwe Boll(they both like hookers and blow!), and his future gaming/movie plans. "I'm currently adapting a game into ascript for myself to direct. I'm not talking about it yet, but it's for Atari -- so you can imagine that it's like adream for me." What a nerd!

Sounds like Sony got themselves a perfect team. What's more, he loved the game enough to strike a deal with a friend to film Gans pitching his ideas aboutthe movie and later, insert Japanese subtitles. Gans then had the 37-minute tape shipped to Konami headquarters inJapan. Konami ended up screening the tape for the entire staff.

Luckily, Brotherhood of the Wolf(Gans' previous film) was just making the rounds in Japan at the time, and Silent Hill's creator, AkiraYamaoka, realized that Gans would be capable of handling the game's movie adaptation (i.e. he wasn't just a deliriousfanboy). Needless to say, Gans got the job. "If tomorrow I wanted something else, I would do exactly the samething," says Gans.
Silent Hill director is a gamer, fo' real originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Apr 2006 16:25:00 EST. The trailer for the UMD is pretty compelling: the animation looks amazing, and the stories they depict appear extremely engaging. Interviews with the animation director and the music composer for Silent Hill are also included on the UMD, as are content from all of the games in the series and a bit from the as yet to be released film.

The Silent Hill Experience will creep into stores this Spring. Plan to buy some new underpants before then.
Silent Hill: Experience this! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jan 2006 07:00:00 EST. The poster is also new Ithink... perhaps a winner in the poster designing contest?

Fans of the gameknow how creepy it is -- especially if played at night, alone -- and so there are some high hopes resting on the movieto really deliver in the pants-soiling category.
