Konami's Silent Hill franchise has forgotten more about keeping us hiding beneath our covers than most games will ever know. Even EA's own Glen Schofield tips his hat to the series, telling us earlier this week that he considers the 1999 PlayStation original to be among his favorite survival horror games ever. But after nearly a decade of stumbling through the fog, it's easy to feel that the dilapidated burg of Silent Hill has gotten a bit too long in the tooth.

For the series' sixth installment, Konami has handed the blood-soaked baton over to external developer Double Helix Games, a recent mash-up of The Collective and Shiny Entertainment. The result is this fall's upcoming release, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and we recently puzzled our way out of mist long enough to ask the game's lead designer, Jason Allen, just why we should care about this latest return trip to Silent Hill.

Not that we're complaining, as if the characters in Konami's beloved horror series would collectively realize that abandoned, fog-filled towns are abandoned and fog-filled for a reason, they would probably stop going to them in search of deceased or missing wives/offspring/brothers -- and we wouldn't have these gorgeous screenshots from the upcoming Silent Hill: Homecoming to drool over.

So thanks, horror genre characters. Your obvious ineptitude for danger avoidance may deliver you into the jaws of certain doom, but it provides us with near-limitless entertainment -- and really, isn't that more important in the long run?
Though Konami's official announcement of a PlayStation 2 version of Silent Hill Origins is welcomed, it arrives about as unexpectedly as that surprise birthday party you planned for yourself once. That might have been more enjoyable if you had any friends, but then you're far too busy clobbering jittery, faceless nurses in your free time.

Incidentally, that's exactly what you do in this game. Casting some light on the spooky town's black history, Silent Hill Origins for PS2 aims to impart the "chilling, suspenseful and fear-filled experience that handheld gamers encountered" to those who prefer considerably larger screens. "This is their chance to learn more of the mystery and mythos surrounding Silent Hill that's been hinted at in earlier games and made the series such a success," said Anthony Crouts, VP of marketing and ineffective secret keeping at Konami Digital Entertainment.

We'll share further details as soon as they come shambling out of the foreboding mist.
Silent Hill Origins confirmed for PS2, world reels in shock originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. Though we still haven't gotten official word from Konami, the rumor has now been corroborated by a few retailers, making a port seem all the more likely.

GameFly and Amazon both have listings for the game, although they've currently got it set at opposite ends of March. Heck, the two sites even have box art (seen at right). Now, Konami, would you please just announce the thing so we can start stocking up on Depends? ... Wait. No. We mean Game Fuel. Yeah. Game Fuel. You know, so we can play all night because we're not scared at all. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Retailers listing Silent Hill Origins for PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 12:15:00 EST. So get this: Konami made a (by most accounts) pretty good game called Silent Hill Origins for the PSP, and according to a Kotaku tipster, the company will be moving the game to the PS2 in March 2008! Making a port of a decent game from a well-regarded franchise for a system with 120 million units sold worldwide, can you believe it? ... Yes, so can we.

As we said, this hasn't been confirmed by Konami, but it seems like one of two things would be happening right now. Either they are porting SHO to the PS2, or they've seen this story on the internet, fired the guy in charge of thinking of things like this and are in the preliminary stages of porting SHO to the PS2. Either way, we'd bet that you'll hear more about it soon.
Rumor: PSP Silent Hill being ported to PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 10:15:00 EST. It's been a while since Konami first announced Silent Hill V, and details revealed since have been few and far between. A new issue of Official Playstation Magazine, however, has revealed some new tidbits of information about the latest in the survival horror series.

The radio and the flashlight -- which were abandoned in the previous Silent Hill game -- return in the fifth console installment of the series. Unlike previous games, the camera will feature full 3D movement, and the article hints at some possible Sixaxis functionality in the PS3 version. The rest of the article features some new, "exclusive" images and character renderings, and recaps story and gameplay elements that were already known, but it could be a nice refresher for anyone who's forgotten exactly what to look forward to.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
New Silent Hill V details finally surface originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 08:00:00 EST. Not quite as terrifying as the titles he's been working on, Akira Yamaoka sat down with us during E For All to give us a teensy bit of information about the upcoming Silent Hill: Origins, and what it took to bring the game to the PlayStation Portable. While he didn't tell us the secret to being scary on a much smaller screen, we imagine it'll mean a lot of OMG IN YOUR FACE moments and spooky noises. Perhaps they'll even tell people this is a game better enjoyed with headphones.

Check out the brief interview after the break.

Gallery: E for All 2007

Continue reading Joystiq interview: Silent Hill: Origin's Akira Yamaoka

Joystiq interview: Silent Hill: Origin's Akira Yamaoka originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 21:31:00 EST. If more people were populating arcades, we'd probably get more games like Silent Hill: The Arcade, released in Japan last month. Of course, if our arcades included more games like Silent Hill and fewer sweaty meat sacks trying to lose that last 230 pounds on a DDR machine electronically beeping out a prayer for a quick death, we'd probably be more apt to go there.

Luckily for us, we have footage like the above clip. Just make your fingers into a gun shape and go to town. You don't have to pay any money and (best of all) you don't have to keep yourself from staring at Chunky Brewster performing his Slurpee rehydration.
Silent Hill: The Arcade makes us jealous originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Oct 2007 10:30:00 EST. We still can't believe Konami has been able to create such an amazing looking game on the PSP.

The video shows Travis driving his rig when he's attacked with some pretty disturbing mental images causing him nearly to careen off the road. We're not exactly sure why the rest of the video is shown playing on a PSP, which makes anyone with less than 20/20 vision struggle to see it. Perhaps Konami really wanted you to know this amazing game is running on the PSP?

Either way, Silent Hill: Origins is shaping up to be a no-brainer for any PSP owner, and the song was a great choice, too!

That being said: This new 1UP preview of Silent Hill V has us intrigued.

It's in the hands of an American team, and we're interested in the way they're going with it. We do wonder if it will be possible to still enjoy the real-time disintegration effects and more responsive combat if we watch the game through a slit between our index and middle finger with wads of cotton in our ears. Silent Hill V developer The Collective is borrowing a few Christopher Gans film devices for its upcoming game sequel, according to an article in the latest EGM. Inspired by the Silent Hill movie, SHV will feature real-time shifts between reality and the 'Otherworld,' forcing helpless players to suffer through the ghastly transformations of their immediate environments. Enhancing this horror, The Collective will use motion-capture techniques to model the game's monsters, just as the film crew did, creating vivid movement, like the sexually charged lure of the Siam, a perverse fusion of genders.
Continue reading Silent Hill V taking cues from Gan's movie

Silent Hill V taking cues from Gan's movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 17:26:00 EST. First and foremost, we know a little more about the game's story. The story centers around one Alex Shepard, a 22 year-old war vet. The game begins as Alex wakes up in a VA hospital where he was undergoing treatment for a near fatal wound (Jacob's Ladder, anyone?). In the hospital, Alex has a premonition that his younger brother is in danger. Like any good brother, Alex rushes home to Shepards Glen, only to find that his mother is catatonic, his father and brother are gone, and that the New England town is covered in fog. As Silent Hill fans could probably guess, things are about to get weird.
Continue reading Silent Hill V breaks down before your eyes

Silent Hill V breaks down before your eyes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 15:30:00 EST. If so, you may have noticed an inaccessible option labeled "Accolades" in one of the menus. Radio GTN believes this is actually the beginning of a PSP version of 360's "Achievements" system. It's obvious if you think about what an accolade is -- an award, basically.

However, the more likely scenario: Silent Hill: Origins will have special tasks to complete that give you these accolades, which would unlock in-game awards. (Maybe something as simple as wallpaper for your PSP?) However, imagine the possibilities of PSP/PS3 connectivity: perhaps an unlockable T-shirt for your Home avatar?

[via Digg]
Silent Hill: Origins features "Accolades" originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 11:00:00 EST. A few days ago, a Silent Hill demo was leaked onto the internet. This potentially damaging loss spread like wildfire, with sites generating upwards of 1200 downloads of the demo, which only operates on PSPs with unpatched, or unofficial firmware. Karl Jeffery, CEO and founder of developer Climax, told GamesIndustry.biz that the UK developer is not responsible for the leak. "All I can say is that code did not leak from Climax - 100 per cent guaranteed," said Jeffery. "The code that is out there is fingerprinted and was supplied solely to Konami for marketing purposes."

"At Climax we have strong and proven security procedures that protect all of our code, assets and builds," he added. "We have developed over 100 titles in 20 years in business and have never had a leak or theft from inside the company." In spite of this apparent security breach, it doesn't appear as though the release will be pushed back. Thank goodness -- could we really have waited even longer for Silent Hill Origins?
Climax denies responsibility for Silent Hill demo leak originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 21:00:00 EST.
The Games Convention in Leipzig is only a few days away, and it appears that Konami's upcoming Silent Hill UMD demo from the show somehow got leaked for public consumption. Unlike regular demos, this must be ripped into a disc image and run off of a homebrew-enabled PSP. We're not sure if Konami is too appreciative of having early code released to the public, and we're going to refrain from linking to places where it's available for download. However, video proof (seen above) shows that this is, in fact, real.

Konami puzzled us earlier today by sending out a cryptic poem hinting that a major unexpected announcement would be coming from its press conference. Knowing that Pac-Man CE had already been announced, we were perplexed as to what Konami's announcement could possibly be. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're sitting at said press conferencce right now, and the announcement is ... Silent Hill V (at least that's what we think it is). The game features a soldier home from a war who is searching for his missing son. As often seems to be the case, this missing person decides to the best place to run to is Silent Hill. Akira Yamaoka will return to provide a brand new mind-bending soundtrack. Konami promises more news to come.
Konami announces Silent Hill V for 360, PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 21:16:00 EST. Most prominent is that PaRappa the Rapper 3 is coming to PlayStation 3, and "none of the that ported PSP nonsense."

Another eye-catcher is that Silent Hill 5 is being developed "by a US team" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PSP Silent Hill Origins is currently in development by US-based Climax Group. The third teaser from 1UP is more of a no-brainer: "Electronic Arts isn't happy just controlling the NFL -- they want the MLB and NBA, too." We never really thought EA would stop until they had every sport from Football to Segway polo under their belt.

Joystiq's Kyle Orland calculated that Quartermann's rumors "are just as likely to be true as they are false," so flip a coin for Silent Hill 5 and PaRappa 3. Ya gotta believe!

Konami's upcoming Silent Hill Origins game is surrounded in mystery. Plagued with troubled development, the title has gone through a phoenix-like resurrection of sorts, quickly becoming one of the most anticipated titles on the platform yet again. A new interview with Kikizo doesn't reveal anything new, but it does reiterate the focus of the franchise. Oertel explains, "You're going to a town that has multiple shifts in reality with people that have their own kind of dementia. How do you put a realistic spin on that? By it's nature it needs to be somewhat vague." Supposedly, multiple endings will help create a sense of impenetrable mystery.

True to the franchise, Origins is all about atmosphere and tension. Although the development team is trying to explain even more of the lore, don't expect the answers to be clear: "We want to take advantage of that opportunity to explain some things - not everything."

While we love being teased, we can't wait to get some more information on Origins. Until then, don't forget to check out our updated gallery.

Keeping Silent Hill players in the dark originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 13:15:00 EST. Others, however, prefer the mind-rending psychological nightmare that is Silent Hill. A proper entry in the series hasn't been seen since 2004's Silent Hill 4: The Room, which departed heavily from the typical Silent Hill formula. Ever since, fans have been wondering about the inevitable new-gen sequel without much help from the series' publisher, Konami. In fact, Konami has yet to officially announce the existence of Silent Hill 5 at all. In a recent interview with Dengeki PlayStation (unearthed by SilentHill5.net) Silent Hill 5's chief designer, Masahashi Tsuboyama, is nearly as vague as the series itself. When asked about the platforms on which the game might appear, Tsuboyama states that a console has not been chosen. He also says that multi-platform status is not out of the question either. He further adds that the 360 is "definitely a candidate," he likes Blu-Ray, and he believes Silent Hill probably isn't a good fit for the Wii.

So, no definite confirmation then. Fear not Silent Hill aficionados, for there is a ray of hope. Konami's E3 press conference is slated for July 11th. Let's hope we get a real glimpse of Silent Hill 5 by then.
Konami still uncertain of Silent Hill 5 platform originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. With the rise of music download services, that situation has changed. First we had some Final Fantasy soundtracks on iTunes, then the Mother 3 OST, and now the best news of all: Konami has made a deal with Sony BMG to make their entire music catalog available on download services.

Naturally, we'll be loading up with Castlevania music, but Konami has a very large collection of notable game soundtracks that at least deserve a previewing: the Metal Gear Solid series, Contra, Goemon/Mystical Ninja, and Akira Yamaoka's brilliant Silent Hill work. We don't know when Konami will start releasing music on iTunes/Rhapsody/your favorite download service, and we don't know what the order of releases will be. One thing we can confirm: this is hot.

[Via Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound]
Konami makes iTunes useful originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 May 2007 15:00:00 EST. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Silent Hill: Origins producer William Oertel confirmed previous rumors that the game met serious problems during its production. The solution, it appears, was to switch development teams altogether. "Game development isn't an exact science, and sometimes you need to go back and adjust some things. In this case, it has been for the best. It was decided that moving development to Climax's Portsmouth office would be best for the game, and that introduced delays."

As evidenced by the most recent video footage, the game has certainly come a long way, and we're excited to find out more. It's clear that Origins is in good hands, with the producers understanding what makes a Silent Hill game so unique. "As I'm fond of saying, Silent Hill is an exercise in subtlety, and therefore the changes seen in this game, compared to previous games, reflect that."

[Via PSP GadgetZ]
Silent Hill interview confirms development troubles originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 12:00:00 EST. IGN spoke with the game's producer, William Oertel, who spoke a little bit about creating the title: "When first conceiving the idea of Silent Hill on the PSP, the recurrent thought was to do a remake of the original Silent Hill. While some fans would have loved to have seen this, we decided it was better to take the opportunity to build on the rich story encompassed by the series. Doing a prequel (of sorts) allowed us to also touch on some of the moments in the original Silent Hill and present them in a new and different way. The story behind the town is really a story of the characters we've seen in past games. So, the game reveals part of their history, such as Alessa, Dr. Kaufmann and Dahlia, as well as adding a new character, Travis."

It's great to see Konami offer yet another high profile, original game for the platform. Hope you didn't just eat lunch. Silent Hill: Origins is back, and it looks better than ever. Turn off the lights, get your security blanket, and snuggle up to these devilishly violent videos of the game in action. The game seems to have moved away from its Resident Evil 4 inspired camera, while gaining some context sensitive action buttons. Of course, none of this analysis will really matter as you watch this bone-chilling footage.

Remember, kids. You have to be 18 or older to see footage from this obviously M-rated game.
Continue reading Brutally violent Silent Hill gameplay vids

Brutally violent Silent Hill gameplay vids originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. Our first reaction is to be outraged. We love our system and we love Silent Hill and its atmospheric, psychological horror storytelling.

But would we actually love them together? The larger question here extends beyond the boundaries of one foggy town: is the DS an appropriate format for survival horror? We had one outing already in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, which a very trustworthy source tells us wasn't an entirely successful experiment.

Alternately, if the major discussion topic doesn't interest you, we can just talk about Silent Hill and how great it is.
DS Daily: Survival horror originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. Silent Hill: Origins had seemingly disappeared from the public eye, with many (including ourselves) fearing its cancellation. The game showed early promise, with impressive graphics and Resident Evil 4-style gameplay. However, it wasn't long until there were reports of troubled development: Climax, the game's developer, laid off numerous employees. Then, it was conspicuously absent from Konami's Gamers Day.

Well, looks our fears were unwarranted. Game Informer has a new exclusive preview up: "The kicker was that even though the game was on a much smaller screen, our hands sweated and heart pounded as if we were playing a full-on entry in the series. If you're sensitive to scary content you'll probably not be playing this with the lights out and headphones on like the game recommends. With that said, it looks like Climax is on the right track with Origins."

We're incredibly relieved that the game has taken a turn for the better. Akira Yamaoka recently sat down with the German side of GamePro and spilled the beans on some details of the title. Oddly, not much has changed from when we last talked about the game, but that's a good thing because the game seemed like it was on the right track. We'll summarize the interview.

The game, as previously told, will resemble the best Silent Hill game in terms of player direction and character behavior. The best is, easily, Silent Hill 2.

The game's platform is still up in the air. PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 are obvious choices, but Akira hints at what may be a timed exclusive by saying that "we have had a good past experience with Playstation [where the series was born] and we hope to continue that trend."

Akira will probably be lead sound guy again, which is great.

They're not going to adopt the system used in the PSP Silent Hill: Origins because Akira said it didn't show off enough of the environment and surroundings... and that's what makes the games so awesome.

Short interview, but it gives us a clear enough idea of what to expect. Still no scans floating around, although we're sure that'll change sooner or later. Come on, Konami, let's get this game rolling!
Silent Hill 5 may be a timed exclusive to PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 13:00:00 EST. There were also musical performances from Metal Gear Solid 3/Portable Ops soundtrack composer Norihiko Hibino and Silent Hill series producer and composer Akira Yamaoka.

As if the mere existence of this event (and our non-attendance at said event) weren't causing us physical pain, now we have unbearable anticipation buzzing around in our heads. During a Kojima/Mikami panel hosted by Suda, Mikami, a man of taste, mentioned that his favorite Kojima game was Snatcher, to which the other two responded "Ah yes, Snatcher," followed by "Oh, should we announce it here?"

To sum up, in italics, there is a possibility that Hideo Kojima and Suda 51 are collaborating on some kind of Snatcher game. We do not care if it is a sequel, a remake, a port, an action figure, or an official recipe for Neo Kobe Pizza. One of our readers, Luigi Hann, produced this killer-toy hybrid, dubbed Mr. Pyramid Head. Scroll about one-third of the way down and you'll see what we're talking about. What you're looking at is, undoubtedly, a Silent Hill arcade shooting title. While the translation is about as babble-free as that lovely brook outside of your uncle's country cabin (meaning it is full of it), we've gleaned a couple of things from this.

Two players! ...Of course.

Unlike most arcade shooters, you have 100 health (a la Wolfenstein, etc) to begin with instead of the two or three allowed hits.

Multiple endings and branching paths like House of the Dead titles.

Fight such familiar entities as freaky nurses, puppets, zombies (?), and Pyramid Head.

Will we see this thing stateside? Chances are low, but stranger things have happened. Does it go against the whole meaning behind Silent Hill, moving from psychological horror and into frantic shooting action? Probably. Still, it's worth noting just because we love Silent Hill so very much.
Silent Hill hits... the arcade circuit? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Feb 2007 16:30:00 EST. Well, Konami doesn't care: pay your money, take your choice. Silent Hill: The Arcade, unveiled today at AOU 2007, replicates the chilling atmosphere of your darkened living room with... a little black curtain. Sneak between the drapes and you'll find what Famitsu is calling a "gun action shooting game." While PSP gamers are certainly happy by the surprise announcement of an exclusive Castlevania, there is one game that was suspiciously missing: Silent Hill: Origins. The game had a very impressive debut, but ever since rumors of troubled development came about, the game has mysteriously disappeared from public eye.

Hotly anticipated games like Metal Gear Solid 4 were also absent from the show. Is Silent Hill: Origins canceled? Has the release slipped out of this year? There are tons of unanswered questions right now. Konami's website notes that "major announcements" are coming tomorrow.
Sony requires any game ported to the PSP to have extra content not found in other versions of that same title, but that's not what this post is about. A strange thing has happened to game franchises on the PSP, sometimes their best showing is on the portable. Can a franchise that you loathe be loved on the PSP? Well it has happened to me ...twice already.

Syphon Filter is a gaming series that I just couldn't stand on the Playstation or Playstation 2. I disliked the graphics, animation and gameplay of every version I tried. Even fams of Syphon Filter seemed to hate the last one that came out on PS2. So when a Syphon Filter game was announced on PSP, I was as interested in it as I was about castration. When reviews started to pour out that stating the game was incredible I lost respect for every reviewer that enjoyed it. Then one day while adding games to my Gamefly Q I decided to put Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror on the list. I didn't do it because I expected to enjoy the game, but rather so I could validate my hatred for the franchise.

In an interview with French-language site DVDrama, Gans hopes that the Roger Avery-penned sequel will retain the visual aesthetic of the first film should he be too busy adapting an Onimusha film to take the director's chair. In his hypotehtical absence, Gans would like a European director to take his stead so as to avoid making the film "too Hollywood" (loose translation).

Of course, some continuity issues run amok if the films follow the same timeline as the games, most notably the inclusion of Pyramid Head; we'll spare you the spoilers and let you read the film's Wiki page if you are curious. The original Silent Hill film, after initial dismay, eventually grew on me as a mediocre horror flick that proved itself better than a multitude of other game adaptations. Gans hopes that sequel will correct the mistakes of the first movie; let's hope it does so we can finally have a decent game-film to hold up as a pillar by which to compare the rest.

[Via Digital Battle]
Another Silent Hill film in the cards originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Dec 2006 14:25:00 EST.
