Citing "sources familiar with the system," Polygon reports that the Xbox One will not require a fee to play used games. Instead, the console will perform regular online checks to verify disc authenticity and ownership.

Polygon's sources note that used game sales will continue, as Xbox One game ownership is determined by an on-disc encryption code. Once a game has been sold, traded, or otherwise activated by another console, access to the previous owner's installed content is revoked and transferred to its new owner.

Microsoft's Major Nelson addressed recent speculation regarding the upcoming console's ability to play used games in a statement released earlier today. "Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games," Major Nelson said. "Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future."

Polygon additionally reports that Xbox One voice chat and party chat will be powered by Skype, according to an unnamed Microsoft representative. Recent rumors suggest that Skype will also enable remote play sessions.

"Skype technologies are used in Xbox One which improves voice quality during multiplayer game sessions," Microsoft's representative wrote in a statement to Polygon. "Skype can also be used to call any of your Skype contacts for voice or video chat exclusively or while playing a game. Additionally, we have improved the Kinect hardware, from microphone configuration to dedicated audio processing, which contributes to providing a high-quality voice experience whether you are chatting in a game or through Skype."
Report: No fee to play used Xbox One games, Skype powers voice chat originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 May 2013 20:10:00 EST. Rumor has it that Microsoft's Xbox One console will feature remote play through Skype, allowing someone to remotely take over gameplay on the local console directly from a Skype call. Either player may break the remote play session at any time.

Supposedly the feature is in testing phase right now, though Polygon's source notes that certain details are still up in the air - like how long that individual can remotely play or whether they need to own the same game or not. During the Xbox reveal event, Microsoft unveiled group Skype calls using the Xbox One's improved Kinect sensor.
Rumor: Xbox One to feature Skype remote play originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 May 2013 13:45:00 EST.
Microsoft's next-gen console, the Xbox One, will offer Skype in widescreen HD and will allow group video calls, Yusuf Mehdi said during the next-gen Xbox reveal event today.
Skype on Xbox One will run with the Snap feature, which allows multiple apps to run simultaneously, as demonstrated by David Jurenka and his beautifully groomed living room, shown alongside a movie.

Xbox One allows group Skype video calls originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 May 2013 13:19:00 EST. Skype video calling will be enabled on the device for both the WiFi and 3G models as soon as the PlayStation Store updates, sometime during the sun's descent toward the horizon.

Skype will run in "background mode" on the Vita, allowing users to pause a game, answer a call and then go back to touching Little Deviants once the call is over. Skype on Vita also supports both the front and rear camera on the device, with the ability to switch back and forth during a call. Let your imagination roam as to the possibilities.

Now we will menacingly stare at our microwave and interrogate it on why it seems be one of the few useful devices left without Skype support.

Update: Clarified that Skype and a game can't be active at the same time. The company is currently seeking a software development engineer focused on Skype for the Xbox, as spotted by GI.biz. During its GamesCom press conference, Sony revealed a suite of social media stuff that will be downloadable for the PlayStation Vita, joining the Vita-exclusive apps like Near and Party. If you want to let people know what's going on in your life (like, say, "I just played a Vita game" or "I'm about to play a Vita game") you'll be able to do so in Foursquare, Skype, Twitter, or Facebook. Skype was previously hinted at in a Brazilian Sony presentation.

All four apps will be available for free download from the PlayStation Store. The announcement didn't make it clear as to whether any of them would be available at launch, but we're guessing no -- if the apps were ready at launch, they'd probably be pre-loaded on the device.
Continue reading PlayStation Vita gets social with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and Foursquare apps

PlayStation Vita gets social with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and Foursquare apps originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 16:50:00 EST. The Brazilian site GameGeneration noticed a familiar logo on stage during a PlayStation Vita presentation at a Sony "Key Account Meeting" in São Paulo. Along with PSN, Wi-Fi, and DLNA, the Skype logo sits unassumingly to the side of the PlayStation Vita, suggesting that Skype will be available on the Vita as it was on the PSP.

Why would there be any doubt that a PSP feature would carry forward? Well, for one thing, between the PSP version and now, Skype was purchased by Sony's competitor Microsoft; for another, the PSP Go proved that we can't expect any feature to carry forward from one Sony handheld to another, not even playing PSP games.

When it acquired Skype, Microsoft said it planned to continue supporting versions on non-Microsoft platforms, so it's not impossible that it would continue supporting Sony handhelds. Right now, this is unconfirmed, as neither Microsoft or Sony offered comment when queried by Joystiq.
Report: Skype logo on slide in Brazilian PlayStation Vita presentation originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 18:25:00 EST. Next time Microsoft purchases a company, we know how it'll contact its new acquisition to begin negotiations. Microsoft just entered into an agreement to purchase Skype for "$8.5 billion in cash." There's good news involved, even if you're not a Skype investor: "Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices," Microsoft announced, "and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities."

You won't be stuck exclusively using Skype with Kinect, either, as the company plans to continue supporting Skype clients on platforms other than its own (which means Microsoft is now in control of a PSP app). Microsoft did not provide a timeframe for the debut of these Xbox and Windows Phone services, but we'd be very surprised if there weren't a staged Skype call during Microsoft's E3 presentation next month.
Continue reading Microsoft buys Skype, plans to add support to Kinect and Xbox Live

Microsoft buys Skype, plans to add support to Kinect and Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 May 2011 10:19:00 EST. You know communication is of paramount importance while playing Portal 2's co-op mode and, to ameliorate that experience, Valve has upgraded the quality of Steam's voice technology. In place of that busted old junk is the SILK audio codec, the same one developed by (and used in) Skype -- those cats should know a little something about internet-based voice tech. While the older Steam Voice required a steady 15 kbps of bandwidth, SILK dynamically adjusts its bandwidth demands, from 8 to 30 kbps.

During a brief test, we found the audio quality to be a notable improvement from the likes of Xbox Live, PSN, and even Steam Voice, but not quite "Skype-quality." Today's Steam client update brings the new codec, along with some other improvements, exactly one month before Portal 2 will require you to use it. We're hoping Steam users test it out before then, so Valve can iron out any pulls in its SILK stockings before Portal 2 day.
Steam Voice chat upgraded with Skype's SILK codec, just in time for Portal 2 co-op originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 19:00:00 EST. We found out earlier this week that Skype is "technically possible" on the Nintendo DSi, but the question remained: Will Nintendo adopt the VoIP service for its fancy new handheld? CVG put that very question to Nintendo of Europe and, more or less, got a resounding, "No."

"We have no plans to release a Skype application for Nintendo DS or DSi," the company told them. While we'd love to tell you that the Skype rep responded with a concrete "yes," we can at least say that the representative didn't totally shut TechRadar down. In fact, the wording of the boilerplate response suggested that there's no reason the service wouldn't spread to the DS platform.

According to the representative, Skype's growth strategy "includes extending the Skype infrastructure and platform to bring Skype functionality wherever, whenever, and on whatever device or site people choose to use it." Currently, that includes computers, some smartphones, and, of course, the PSP. As for the DSi, "Whilst we can't comment on any future plans to bring Skype to Nintendo's DSi, it would technically be possible."

Of course, DS homebrew enthusiasts have known for a couple of years that it's possible. But the DSi Shop makes it seem more likely to happen in an official capacity.
Skype 'technically possible' on DSi originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 09:35:00 EST. Sony has announced the release -- finally! -- of the PSP headset with remote control, ideal for your handheld Skype yammering. The headset is currently available at Amazon and GameStop for the MSRP of $30 and buy.com for $20. The headset was originally due out last month for $20; it launched in Japan mid-March.

For help on how to get the headset working with your PSP-2000 (sorry, early adopters, it doesn't work with older models), check out PSP Fanboy's official guide.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Sony launches PSP headset with remote for Skype originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 May 2008 15:55:00 EST. We're glad that SCEA finally confirmed the availability of Skype-compatible PSP headsets at retailers today. When we first discovered the peripheral, it was supposed to release last month for $20. Well, looks like things have changed. The peripheral is now available at a MSRP of $30 at your favorite retailer. We checked amazon.com, buy.com, and GameStop -- and it appears that buy.com is still your best bet.

The new headset offers stereo sound, an adjustable microphone, and a lightweight design with soft ear cushions. It's the easiest way to get Skype working on your PSP. We thought it'd be best to reprint our advice from the Super Smash Bros. Brawl release: if you want to chat up your friends while doing laps in Mario Kart Wii, here are five options we found -- harnessing the power of other consoles or a com-pu-ter -- for chatting up your friends. (Looking for a place to share your Kart friend codes? <strike>We'll set up a über-list post closer to tonight's US release.</strike> Here's a link to the über-list.)

Xbox Live: Or as we've come to know it -- Kart LIVE(R). Just set up private chat and off you go. Got more than one friend? Go into a Halo 3 lobby (you do have Halo 3, right?).

PSN: Start up a new chat under the "friends" section of the XMB. Invite all the friends you want and wait for them to join. Works and sounds exceptional! USB and Bluetooth compatible.

Skype: Set up a conference call.

TeamSpeak or Ventrilo: Guilds, clans and other computer types know these services. Perfect for guildies racing together.

Nintendo DS: Use Metroid Prime Hunters or Pokémon Diamond or Pearl. Warning: More inane codes required to pull this option off. There are also homebrew options.

Of course, if none of these options are viable, might we suggest using a classic: The phone.
Why is this taking so long? Many have inquired about the PSP Skype headset, which was originally listed as an April release for $20. Now, amazon.com is showing a May 7th release and a price of $30.

We love using Skype on our PSP -- it's a nifty free feature that we'd like to see become ubiquitous in the community. However, without this official headset, we don't think too many people are going to jump on the Skype bandwagon. C'mon, Sony! Let's get this headset out there!

Update: Reader Rick Adams pointed out an excellent deal: buy.com has the headset available for $16 + $6 shipping. They have the product listed for release on April 25th.

[Thanks, Bryan!]
Wherefore art thou, Skype headset? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Apr 2008 22:45:00 EST. Looks like that rumor was right ...

The PSP Headset Kit for Skype is coming in April for a very affordable price of $20. This kit makes much more sense than the current solution, which requires users to get two separate accessories. Hopefully, this release will not only encourage more PSP users to try Skype, but to try voice communication in their online-enabled games.
Skype headset for PSP coming April, for $20 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 17:30:00 EST. A supposedly leaked PowerPoint presentation revealed some potentially new accessories from Sony. If this information turns out to be true, PSP owners can anticipate a new traveler case and Media Manager software this coming April/May. Both will retail for $20. More exciting, however, is the potential for a Skype Headset Kit. Currently, PSP owners must purchase two separate accessories in order for Skype to work. Providing one easy to purchase solution is far more ideal.

The same PowerPoint presentation also mentions that SCEA is planning to release the GPS peripheral in America for under $150. Unfortunately, when asked for comment, a SCEA rep informed us that "any information is speculation and rumor."
Rumor: New accessories coming in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 10:05:00 EST. After being passed over due to failed certification tests, Skype on PSP will finally land in the hands of Japanese gamers on March 18, PSP Fanboy reports. The Japanese version of the Slim-PSP-only service launches a month later than the North American version, defying our normal expectations of how these things go.

The day after the firmware launch, a new Skype-optimized USB microphone atttachment for the PSP will be released for 2,500 yen (or two for 4,000). Expect a sudden surge in Japanese gamers yelling at their PSPs shortly thereafter.
Skype finally comes to Japanese PSPs this month originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 18:55:00 EST. Poor Japanese PSP owners. They've been so used to being ahead of the technology curve for so long now, but when Skype was so suddenly delayed for the region they sadly had no choice but to wait. It seems that the headset related problems have no been solved, however, as Japan finally gets to sink its teeth into the VOIP service this month. A new firmware update will arrive on the 18th of March and will enable the service on Japanese machines - handy for those of us with Japanese import consoles.

The news of Skype's imminent arrival comes alongside an announcement of the new PSP microphone attachment. This will be released on the 19th at a price of 2,500 yen each (or 4,000 yen for two) and will plug into the USB socket on the top of your PSP, allowing you to chat with your other Skype wielding friends from all over the world. The press release states that the microphone is identical to the one that came with Talkman so we're curious to find out what the reason for delaying Skype rollout was. Still, it's all done and dusted now and we can look forward to chatting with our Japanese PSP owning friends in two weeks time.
Japanese PSP owners finally get Skype + mic this month originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 06:00:00 EST. It didn't take too long for the talented M33 team to release a custom version of Sony's latest Skype-enabled firmware. With the new Network Update feature of these custom releases, homebrew users can simply update directly from their systems. However, those that aren't fortunate enough to be near a wi-fi point can simply download the necessary files here. (But, considering Skype is the main benefit of 3.90, we think only those with reliable access to wireless internet will really download this update.)
M33 custom firmware catches up to latest 3.90 release originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 22:25:00 EST.
If Skype's a good enough program for us to use to lovingly craft the auditory (and often olfactory) experience that is the Joystiq Podcast, it should be good enough for you to use for any communication purpose. But we understand that some of you may need a primer with how to get the thing running on your PSP and we've got SCEA marketing dude John Koller leaping to your aid.

After watching the video and seeing Kolller with the full set-up, there's one question we still can't answer: We're down with Skype calling, but is there a way we can avoid looking like complete tools in the process?

It may not herald the arrival of the mythical PlayStation Phone just yet, but the latest PSP firmware update brings the next best thing. On the eve of its January 24 debut in Japan, Sony's PSP Skype service and microphones have been delayed. According to the press release, "it was found that the microphone did not meet the Skype specifications in part to obtain certification." Doesn't that seem like a problem that should have been dealt with before launch week, possibly before a release date was even announced?

No new date has been given for either the microphone or Skype service. Our sister site Engadget had a chance to check out the new service earlier this month at CES 2008.

[Via Engadget]
Sony delays Skype, microphones for PSP in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 10:45:00 EST. After making a big deal of this new feature at CES, SCEI has announced that they are delaying the introduction of Skype to the PSP. Originally planned for release tomorrow, the feature has been delayed ... in Japan, at the very least. The two Skype headsets being manufactured for release in Japan "did not meet the Skype specifications" and therefore, cannot be released.

With a delay in Japan, one can assume that the new firmware update will be delayed worldwide. Those anticipating free PSP-to-PSP calls will have to wait just a little longer, it seems. However, maybe we'll be surprised by a firmware release that comes out in the rest of the world. Considering that has never happened, we won't hold our breath.

[Update via Kotaku: This announcement "will make no difference to the European and USA launch, which will coincide with the end of January firmware upgrade."
Skype is a pretty important service for us here at Joystiq HQ. Not only does it allow us to record the Joystiq Podcast (when we can't all make it to the mysterious oil tanker somewhere in the mid-Atlantic) but it also allows us to prank call nerds. So we're thrilled to hear that, according to Engadget, the PSP version of the service seems to be coming along pretty well.

Though a reported slight delay in calls is kind of a bummer, we're hopeful that some of the kinks can be worked out before the service is officially released. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to go ask Cristian Cardona if his refrigerator is running.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, our friends at Engadget were able to go ears-on with the upcoming Skype feature for PSP. The UI and sound quality were commended -- "pretty decent" according to the team.

Unfortunately, there is one major flaw holding the feature back. "The only caveat is a bit of lag time in the audio transmission, less than a second but enough to be noticeable." A second of lag isn't too bad, especially for a free feature. However, those that wanted to use SkypeOut to make calls to traditional phone lines may find this unacceptable. We're going to have to find out for ourselves when the firmware update goes live at the end of the month.

[Thanks, Gregger!]
Engadget ears-on says Skype has lag originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 12:30:00 EST. Following the news of impending Skype support on Slim PSPs, some were left wondering why the plumper PlayStation Portable failed to answer the voice over IP call. Speaking to SCEE's director of corporate communications Nick Sharples, Pocket Gamer has ascertained the simple answer. It has nothing to do with looks, and everything to do with the older PSP's waning memory and inability to remember long strings of numbers (just like grandpa).

"We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series," said Sharples. If you recall, the PSP-2000 benefits from 64MB of internal memory (as opposed to 32MB in the older model) which is used for UMD caching and the reduction of game loading times. The same enhancement also enables Skype to run and thus excludes the original PSP from online chatting. We certainly hope early adopters don't get too hung up on the disappointment [Goodbye! - Ed].

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Skype skipping original PSP due to memory limitations originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 20:00:00 EST. As reported earlier, Skype will be available exclusively on PSP-2000 systems only. The revised handheld features additional RAM, previously used for UMD caching. According to Nick Sharples from SCEE, the additional memory onboard the new PSP is crucial for running the VoIP application. He told Pocket Gamer: "We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series."

Skype is coming before month's end. With a late January software patch to the new PSP Slim, the Skype service will be accessible through the handheld. The press release we received from Sony didn't specify exactly why PSPhat isn't compatible with the service -- probably because it would try to eat any microphone attachment that tried to plug into it. Fatty.

For those not in the know, Skype is a voice chat program with nearly 250 million registered users worldwide. Sony has now officially announced what we all knew was coming - Skype is coming to the PSP Slim. From what we can tell from the feature list on the press release, this is no "Skype Lite". All of Skype's PC/Mac features will soon be available for the PSP Slim. The service allows for free calls to PCs and other PSPs running skype but will also feature full support for SkypeIn and SkypeOut, essentially turning your PSP into a (rather bulky) cellphone - as long as you have Wifi access.

Skype for the PSP will be enabled via a firmware update at the end of the month, when a Skype icon will suddenly appear on your XMB. Don't have a Skype account? No worries, you can set one up straight from your PSP. Check out the full features, after the break.
Continue reading Sony officially announces Skype support for end of January

Sony officially announces Skype support for end of January originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 Jan 2008 17:40:00 EST. The rumors of Skype support coming to the PSP have now been confirmed by Japan's Nikkei Net news organization. Unfortunately for most PSP users, however, the news service stated that Skype support will be limited to the PSP-2000, but that it may come as soon as this month.

Skype service will be free for PSP-to-PSP and PSP-to-PC calls and vice versa. Additionally, users can register for a dedicated number for around $20 every three months for what should provide support for landline and cellphone calls. The software will more than likely be part of a future firmware update, and users will use an external microphone for communication.

At this point, we're not entirely sure why service is limited to the PSP-2000. Could there be some other hardware addition to the updated handheld that we didn't previously know about, or could this be a diabolical scheme to get us to upgrade our PSPs? Whatever the case may be, we know we certainly want to use this new technology that more or less answers the question whether Sony is interested in a PSPhone.

[Via Gamespot, Thanks for the tip, Jay!]
Skype support will be limited to PSP-2000 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 19:15:00 EST. Rumors, in the form of a decrypted firmware, cropped up last February regarding Skype on the PSP. In August, at the Leipzig Games Conference, Sony officially unveiled Go! Messenger - the newly branded suite of VoIP tools by British telecommunications giant, BT - which is due this month. On Sony's event page for CES 2008, the massive consumer electronics expo kicking off in Las Vegas this weekend, they list a curious feature for their handheld: "Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system." (Click on the controller and then on the PSP to bring up a list of the features, as seen above).

Could Sony finally show off the long-anticipated VoIP platform? And why isn't it using the Go! Messenger branding? And why are we asking so many questions? We can't be sure, but we've asked Sony to comment on their webpage.

[Thanks, Jorge]
Rumor: Sony talking Skype for PSP at CES next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 10:26:00 EST. Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

I'd like to apologize for not running this feature last week. I could not complete it due to an illness.

Q: Is Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis coming out to PSP?
A: No. We find it suspicious that of all the media organizations at the event, only Next-Gen would report on something so significant. While other PSP sites simply reported this as truth, we haven't seen any indication that the game is coming out on PSP. There's no mention of it on any of Square Enix's press materials, and Next-Gen refused to return our e-mails on the subject. While we'd love to see it ported, chances are slim.

For PSP? We wish ... but for now, it's not true.

Q: Are there any VOIP-type homebrew applications for the Sony PSP, like something along the lines of Skype?
A: You would think, considering PSP's ability to do VoIP easily in headset-enabled games. However, we can't seem to find any homebrew methods of VoIP. For those lucky enough to be in the UK, a new official service will be coming out soon. As reported earlier, hints of a Skype program were found deep in the official firmware. We're pretty sure SCEA is going to get their act together and offer a similar service in the future.
Continue reading Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 20

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 20 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 May 2007 17:30:00 EST. While the functionality is clearly not present in the current revision of PSP's firmware, it appears that Sony's working on something for a future upgrade. Historically, it appears that hints to future functionality is hidden away in the code: references to the PSP camera and GPS were found in earlier decrypted firmware, long before they were officially released.

A similar Sony product, the Mylo, has implemented Skype functionality in the past. Certainly, being able to have some kind of VoIP service (free, or not) would increase the value of Sony's portable even more. Will you celebrate if Sony releases this in a future firmware revision?

[Via digg]
[Update 1: Updated image due to QJ's request.]

See also:
Sony spills it; PSP to get camera, GPS, VoIP
How the PSP can overcome the PSP-inspired Mylo

Is Skype coming to the PSP? Sony's attempting to market the device at a whopping $350, which is ridiculous when many, if not all of its features can be implemented in the PSP, or a PSP redesign. With the right accessories and firmware upgrades, the PSP can do every thing the mylo can... plus it can play games. And at $199, it would be a bargain for the consumer. Here's a list of what Carony believes will make the PSP better:

Skype support to make Internet (VoIP) calls (using the SOCOM headset).

Support for Slingbox (a competitor of Location-Free TV). Sony could make some bling by not selling hardware, but selling a Slingbox application.

Built-in IM applications, similar to mylo's support for Yahoo! and Google.

Better e-mail integration.

Keyboard accessory.

Video output for TV.

Stop making Connect so crappy. Where's the revamp?

These are all great, plausible and reasonable upgrades that Sony can provide. If Sony actually took these suggestions to heart, I know a ton more college students and business people would pick up a PSP. Let's hope Sony has the brains to follow through on some of this.

[Via PSP World]
How the PSP can overcome the PSP-inspired mylo originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 16:00:00 EST.
