You'll be able to add a touch more conventional warfare to Dead Rising 2 today with the "Soldier of Fortune" DLC. This $2 add-on includes military clothing and gives Chuck's guns increased power, accuracy and ammunition. Shooting zombies? With guns? Sounds pretty unorthodox, but it might work.

After nearly a month long hiatus, Fanswag Weekly is back and ready for some payback ... Soldier of Fortune: Payback. This week we're giving away a new and freshly shrink wrapped copy of Soldier of Fortune: Payback to one lucky fanboy who can handle all its extremeness. This game is so extreme that Activision included its own anti-dismemberment "low-violence option". Now that friends, is extreme. To win a copy, simply follow the directions outlined below.

Since we're dealing with Soldier of Fortune: Payback, we want to know what the best way to get revenge or payback on someone is. Tell us your best payback strategy by commenting on this post, one comment per calendar day (eastern).
Multiple comments per day by the same user will be disqualified. We'll accept entries until Friday, January 25th at 12:00PM (noon) eastern. You must be at least 18 years old to enter. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only.
On Friday, we'll randomly choose one winner.

PS3 Fanboy review: Soldier of Fortune Payback

The Soldier of Fortune series of games has long been a guilty little pleasure for many gamers. Developed by Raven Software (the guys making a little title called Quake 4), the first game starred a real-life mercenary named John Mullins and was made popular due to its unusual (for the time) real-world topical settings and violent, visceral combat. A sequel was made two years later in 2002, also starring John Mullins, titled Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix and upped the ante considerably in terms of gore and violence due to their much publicized GHOUL 2.0 dismemberment system.

Though neither game was ever considered a top-tier quality title, both Soldier of Fortune games have managed to attract and keep a solid cult following with many gamers (including myself) playing one or both of the games even to this day. So when Activision suddenly announced earlier this year that they were bringing the violent series back, many people were quite excited -- if a little confused by the news that Raven Software was no longer the development company. Things didn't get much better when it was found out that a small company named Cauldron out of the Slovak Republic would be handling the development, but still people held out hope. I mean how can they mess up with such solid groundwork already laid in place by the previous games?

Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for cracks to start showing in Soldier of Fortune Payback's facade. Right off the bat, you find out that they've ditched the series protagonist John Mullin in favor for a generic faceless mercenary who sounds like he's trying to pass an unusually large kidney stone every time he opens his chew-filled mouth. The rest of the voice acting in the game varies from much worse to slightly better and completely fails at drawing you into the characters or the story itself.

Why does Falcon Northwest CEO, Kelt Reeves, think the EVGA nVidia nForce 680I - SLI makes for a good motherboard in a gaming system? "Mainly because it has a lot of letters, some of which are even capitalized. I've found that the more capital letters a part has, usually the better it is for gaming. It could also be the dual graphics card capability, quad-core CPU support, and great overclocking capability. But it's most likely the letters."

But these new-fangled video games require electricity. And if you want this new type of moving picture show ('talkie', to the layperson) to move like greased lighting, it takes a lot of parts ('doo-dads', to the layperson). And them there parts all use the electricity. The power supply ("magic box", to the layperson) gives them doo-dads the vim and vigor they need to make a good picture show ... does anyone else have a headache?"

Soldier of Fortune: Payback will tear you apart

Activision just announced another installment into the Soldier of Fortune franchise and if the in-game footage above is any inclination to what the game has to offer, then we're in for a bloody good time.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback is set to release this November and will feature thirty plus weapons, a plentiful array of weapons and the typical mercenaries gameplay Soldier of Fortune games offer up. But let's get back to the in-game footage as seen in the video embedded above. Do you see the amount of blood that comes out of those guys, how their legs, arms, and heads pop off and how they crawl in agony on the ground legless, grasping for help? That's butter! And even though we aren't sure how good the game will end up being as a whole, we can definitely say that we enjoy the bloody dismemberment effects. Next-gen dismemberment FTW!

Soldier of Fortune: Payback thinks it's okay to play with dolls

Ragdolls, that is. Brought to you by the creepy kids who tore the arms off their action figures, Soldier of Fortune: Payback declares war on subtlety, good taste and the important bits that keep your limbs connected to the rest of your body. The brief video above is demonstration enough of the game's absurd level of violence, don't you think? Its composition of gory decomposition should give the ESRB a grand old time and players a hearty chuckle -- proof that over-the-top, Verhoeven-esque violence is still funny... or that years of desensitization have turned us into heartless murder machines. We just don't know, Jack.

What we do know is that if Soldier of Fortune: Payback is anything like its predecessors, utterly generic gameplay won't stop it from surfing a bloody torso all the way into the spotlight. (Like it just did when we posted this video!)
