After the first episode's focus on the primitive origins of the franchise, it's nice to see some games that we've actually played -- including JVC's punishing SNES adaptations of the original trilogy, a LEGO title, and the legendary Star Wars Trilogy Arcade from Sega. It's also nice to see a little more Lando -- considering the next episode's progression to the games based on the newer films, it'll probably be the last we see of him for a while.
The Star Wars Retrospective: Episode II originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 30 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. Ever since the Wii came out, people have been wondering when there would be a Star Wars game for the system that lets you wield your Wii-mote like a lightsaber. Well, the wait is nearly over you malevolent gamers. LucasArts announced recently that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will bring the dichotomy of lightsaber-wielding, arm-lopping, head-chopping violence to the cuddly and playful Wii.

It's not known yet how the Wii-mote will integrate into the game, which takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, but let's hope it's some actual gameplay and not a "shake your lightsaber up and down really fast!" minigame that's been tacked on. Apparently you'll be able to go head-to-head on the Wii, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be with lightsabers. Although if it does ... whoa mama. Let the flailing being.
Finally, the Star Wars lightsaber game for the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Sep 2007 15:28:00 EST. [Update: added the video trailer]

Ever want to be Darth Vader's secret apprentice and learn the intricacies of the Dark Side of the Force? If you can wait until an undetermined date sometime in 2008, then you'll get your wish. Lucasarts gave us a sneak peek at what this will be like in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

The story is set in between Episodes III (Revenge of the Sith) and IV (A New Hope), and your character is tasked with the dirty job of mopping up all of the remaining Jedi around the universe. Nothing rubs out those dirty Jedi stains like the Dark Side, now available in a convenient gel form.

Gallery: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Continue reading Joystiq impressions: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Joystiq impressions: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 15:28:00 EST.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, (or, last week in the Mii Spotlight) some pretenders rolled in here and tried to get everyone psyched about Star Trek. Please. We know what's better. We know that Star Wars is really where it's at -- especially when it comes to Miis. Does everyone have Spock on their Wii, ready to get his tennis on? We think not ... but there sure do seem to be a lot of Admiral Ackbars out there, ready to warn us of impending traps.
Continue reading Mii Spotlight: The Force edition

Mii Spotlight: The Force edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 18:30:00 EST. Even though the game is not expected to launch until fall of 2008, Lego says that gamers will be able to play as either Batman or Robin roaming the streets of Gotham City. Players will also take control of villains and have co-op modes. The game will also feature "all the characters" from the Lego Batman set.

We hope the game has the same charm which made the Lego Star Wars series a sleeper hit. For all we know, TT games may very well announce some more entries into the Lego brand video game series.
When the cow's giving good milk, you gotta milk it.
Lego reveals more Batman info originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 15:57:00 EST. Unfortunately, there's no quote to back up the assertion, so we remain partially skeptical, but it's one of those things that we just know is going to happen, whether we want it or not.

Anyone else just as interested, if not more so, in using the Wiimote and nunchuk for Force abilities in a Star Wars game? Still, the humor in this series is worth a second look -- at least in cost-free trailer form -- and this ad for the game reminds us why we enjoy this unlikely franchise at all.

In time for the 30th anniversary, see epic Star Wars events reenacted with Legos after the break.
Continue reading Today's most re-sellable video: Lego Star Wars trailer

Today's most re-sellable video: Lego Star Wars trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 May 2007 00:05:00 EST.
Is a game too ambitious for its own good? Maybe. The new Star Wars Battlefront title brings brand-new massively multiplayer battles ... exclusively for PSP. We're not complaining, however. The new trailer from LucasArts shows there's much to celebrate in this jam-packed UMD. The game promises so much that if Rebellion is able to deliver, our console brethren will have a lot to be jealous of.

Celebrate the new Star Wars Battlefront trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 May 2007 16:00:00 EST. Nothing beats the satisfaction that arises from successfully assembling a Lego masterpiece out of a handful of meaningless blocks. LucasArts must be glowing with delight then, since they've just managed to construct a fully functional ATM by just clipping two of their pieces together. On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, LucasArts has officially announced Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and DS.

The game will be a combination of Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and last year's Lego Star Wars: The <strike>Good</strike> Original Trilogy, with additional characters, enhanced levels and features tossed in by developer TT Games. The group promises to take "full advantage of the unique capabilities of all three next-generation consoles" (three?) and notes that the DS version is unique in being constructed from "the ground up." Brick your favorite console when Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga arrives this Fall.
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga to brick 360, PS3, Wii, DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 May 2007 15:44:00 EST. At least he does according to the above screenshot, which depicts the dirty-handed scoundrel's unbearably intense encounter and point blank face-off with feared bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Hoth.

Aside from new vehicles and improved space combat, LucasArts promises a customization system that allows for "millions of possible unique combatants," with various weapons, equipment and abilities ensuring that "no two allies will likely ever look or perform exactly the same." There's a Star Wars Battlefront game coming out, and it's exclusive for PSP. Titled Renegade Squadron, this new action game will feature an a "never before told" story that takes players through new missions and new battles that spans the classic trilogy (Episodes IV to VI). Han Solo has been recruiting "battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels" to fight the tired-and-true evil Empire. This ragtag team will travel throughout the Star Wars universe. Some of the levels include: Ord Mantell, Boz Pity, Korriban, Sullust and Saleucami. There will also be new space battles at Kessel, Hoth, Bespin, and the remnants of Alderaan. Star Wars mainstays, like Endor and Hoth, will also be returning.

Renegade Squadron promises to provide a greater customizable experience than its predecessors. Players will be able to choose their own weapons, equipments and abilities. A variety of vehicles will be available, including the Millennium Falcon, Darth Vader's TIE Advanced, Slave I, and the Jedi Starfighter. Capitol ships can be controlled as well.

To top it all off, Renegade Squadron will also feature 16 player Infrastructure multiplayer, with leaderboards, stats tracking, and profile pages. With such robust online features, Renegade Squadron looks to easily outdo the PSP version of Battlefront II. The game is planned to release this fall. If you've been eking out a virtual existence in Star Wars Galaxies, the 2003 Sony MMORPG which thrives just as much on self-destruction as it does on landspeeders and lightsabers, you may wish to check in on your neglected home away from home. If your account is found to have been inactive from 17 April 2006, any of the houses, factories, player associations or harvesters to your name will be scheduled for digital demolition. If you built it, they will come on June 5th to wreck it.

Unfortunately, the Empire is not interested in doubling their efforts to wipe out the last remaining signs of civilization (read: active players). Instead, they'll split the work with you and dole out points, badges and all manner of in-game items in return. Once the vacant buildings have been reduced to nothing, Sony Online Entertainment will have successfully transformed the world into a barren wasteland with the aid of their own subscribers. Some believe that's what they've been doing since the game launched.

[Via Opposable Thumbs]
Star Wars Galaxies: vacant houses to be crushed by empire originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 21:59:00 EST. Edge has an interview up with Free Radical co-founder Karl Hilton (no relation, we hope) where he discusses enemy AI, game design, and what it's like developing games in the marketplace right now. Particularly eye-opening is the fact that when they developed GoldenEye, their team was about as dozen people. These days, they consist of about 100 people, which is quite a step up in manpower.

The most interesting quote comes when he's asked about the full time scriptwriter they have working there. Hilton says, "The success of the Wii has showed how unimportant writing is to a huge chunk of the games market - and that market sector is growing." We'd have to disagree with that. Sure, you don't need a huge screenplay to make Wario Ware: Smooth Moves fun ... but those explanation screens that show you how to do each new move with the controller are extremely well written and funny. Now, if they could just hire Tom Stoppard to rewrite Cooking Mama.

They don't drop any new info about Star Wars Battlefront III, but he does talk about HAZE a bit, and it's worth checking out. They also just celebrated their 8th birthday on Friday, which practically makes them wise adults in the game development world.
Free Radical interview is both free and radical originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 14:28:00 EST. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will do the publishing rights this time and LEGO Batman is set to come out sometime 2008.

I'm personally more excited about this LEGO title than Star Wars simply because I'm a bigger fan of Batman. If you could have any property turned into a LEGO game, which would you choose?

Their source is PlayStation World magazine, which makes the info a bit harder to swallow.

According to the article, LucasArts is moving the sequel from developer Pandemic to Free Radical, where it'll be made as a 360-only title, although it's unclear why. Maybe Pandemic crossed George Lucas, and once you cross him ... you never come back. Especially with that Jabba the Hutt-like neck of his. Now, if this post had vanished right after that was typed, that would be some comedy.

Given the extreme success of the Lego Star Wars games, it seems highly unlikely that they'll confine Star Wars Battlefront III to just one console, especially given the fact that it's a sequel to a game that has appeared on just about every platform except your watch. More on this as it develops, unless Lucas squashes us.

[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]
Rumor: Star Wars Battlefront III only on the Xbox 360? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 21:13:00 EST. On page 65, they state that LucasArts is moving the series from Pandemic, who developed the first two in the series, to Free Radical, of TimeSplitters and GoldenEye fame. They go on to say that SWBIII is listed as an Xbox 360 exclusive, but don't think it will stick. Still, Free Radical has a history of making some badass multiplayer games, and hopefully it will translate well in Star Wars: Battlefront III's online skirmishes.
The Death Star wasn't build in a day and apparently Star Wars: The Force Unleashed won't be either. The game did have an official release date of November 2007, but now its release date has switched to "TBD" and the rumor is that it won't be out until sometime in 2008. Much like the Star Wars universe, game delays are both good and bad because while the extra time usually helps make the game better, it tortures fans awaiting that particular title. Let's hope that like cookies in the oven, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is worth the wait. Mmmmm cookies.

That's where the newest game enters based on that galaxy: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed takes place after Episode III, involving Darth Vader nominating you as his apprentice. Since this is supposed to be the "next big thing" in the Star Wars story, George Lucas himself is getting his grubby paws into the game as much as possible.

Anyway, the game is shaping up to be pretty brilliant. Fantastic lighting (and lightning) effects, incredibly emotional characters (above and beyond anything achieved in the latest three movies!), gorgeous worlds... this game is looking damn good. Hopefully the story will hold up, too. We're not going to go into what IGN covers in their preview -- it's simply too long and everything too important to summarize, but if you take the time to read it, you'll get pumped too. Might be the first Star Wars game I'll actually purchase since the N64 Shadows of the Empire. That game was awesome.
Star Wars: Force Unleashed shows some emotion originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 15:15:00 EST. It will be written by Sean Williams, who is a New York Times bestseller and has published eighteen novels, including the Force Heretic series, and co-writing The New Jedi Order series. This will give readers additional insight into the storyline taking place between Episodes III and IV than that found in the game. Also, due to the multiple endings possible in Force Unleashed, the novel will be shedding light on the true canonical ending. So, after playing through the game, are you going to hit your local library to read the book?

[Via QJ.net]
Force Unleashed to get novel and comic series originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 15:30:00 EST. LucasArts must have lots of confidence in the property because their making a game based on it and Clone Wars will be their first internally developed handheld title. LucasArts Shanghai is doing the honers and has Feargus Carroll as the project lead. He previously worked on such popular games as Freedom Fighters, Black & White 2 and Battlefield: Modern Combat.

If both the game and and the new TV show are as good as the previous Cartoon Network Clone Wars than I'll be a huge fan of both.

That would seriously be extreme fun. Burnout is just the tip of the iceberg in setting up a series of accidents.

Of everything on the list, the one that has the best chance of coming true is World of Starcraft. Isn't it about time Blizzard just went ahead and told us that they're gonna make this for the crying masses? Maybe they'll wait until WoW subscriber numbers start dropping off, which doesn't seem like it'll be anytime soon ... looks like 2010 isn't a bad guess.
Peek into the future: the best games of 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Feb 2007 14:55:00 EST. Since the subtitle "The Force Unleashed", your destructive character will have at least these four powers at his disposal: Force Lightning, Grip, Repulse and Push. The decisions made throughout the game will have an impact on the ending, which takes a few pages out of KOTOR's book, but that's a good thing. Enviroments will vary from Raxus Prime to a TIE-Fighter construction site, and even Chewbacca's neck of the woods, Kashyyyk. As for the game's engines, we've got some videos for you to have a look at after the break.
Continue reading Star Wars: The Force Unleashed art and videos

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed art and videos originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 17:00:00 EST.
LucasArts has finally officially announced their next Star Wars game. It will be called Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It's coming out to nearly every system around and luckily that means our PSP will be able to unzip ... errr unleash the force. While the last Star Wars PSP game was the gaming equivalent of a car accident, hopes are still high for this newest Star Wars outing. The game's storyline is being overseen by George Lucas himself and will take place between the events of the new and old trilogy. Interestingly you'll assume the role of Darth Vader's apprentice, who's goal is to hunt down the remaining Jedi Knights.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed hunts down PSP Jedi this fall.

Titled Star Wars: Force Unleashed, it is set to help bridge the 19 year gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. You get to play as Darth Vader's apprentice, as he wants to overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy with you at his side. At the same time, there is a galaxy wide hunt to exterminate the remaining Jedi from existence. Force Unleashed also boasts LucasArts' Eurphoria engine, capable of real-time environmental damage. For instance, when using Force powers on steel, it will dent appropriately. Another example includes a tree either splintering or breaking in two, dependent on the type of impact.

You may be concerned that given the title is taking place between the two trilogies that your actions aren't going to have a huge impact, as the events are set in stone. That's not the case, as LucasArts is saying that there will be multiple endings that can really shake up the Star Wars Universe. At least you have a shot of taking down Palpatine before the first Death Star is fully operational. Does this pique your interest, or does any (finished) Star Wars game without the word "Knights" and "Republic" in the title get ignored?

[Via QJ.net]
Next Star Wars game details Unleashed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 12:30:00 EST. What Gamespot did learn was something far more precious: How to ultimately design and test games.

One of the more interesting things Smith talks about is that game developers should create games and test them on 8-year-old-boys. Smith says, "They like moving forward in a game. They like funny things happening in a game when they press buttons. They love, more than you can possibly believe, cheats. ... They dislike waiting for anything, and the universal phrase is that if something is too difficult, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's too challenging, it means that they don't understand what they're being asked to do ... the game designer is asking something from them, but they're not asking the kids clearly enough and not giving appropriate feedback to their attempts to overcome the challenge. It's rarely a skill difficulty."

We tip our hat to Mr. Smith. He's absolutely right. The clarity and genius of that statement is incredible. Do the sales of Lego Star Wars prove Smith knows thirty-something-year-old video game players are the same as 8-year-olds? The only real difference being puberty, a driver's license, bank account and the ability not to ask mom if they can get an M rated title -- well, most of them anyway.
Lego Star Wars producer unlocks secret of gaming success originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Feb 2007 21:30:00 EST. Oh, the fun that could be had with your Wiimote lightsaber, swinging back and forth, stabbing and thrusting, and the beautiful sounds emanating from the controller. Maybe you don't spend Saturday afternoons that way, but one Go Nintendo reader did, and he decided to make his vision a reality ... or at least, a reality on YouTube. Unfortunately, we're without a Star Wars game at this time. Cue the frothing fanboys! But this latest list of the top ten worst DS games, as decided by the folks at Pocket Gamer, is definitely filled with some of the poorest examples of DS gaming. We're not sure if they're really the ten worst ever, though. Let's call them the "Ten Worst Titles Masquerading as Games You Might Almost Want to Play." Well, except for Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. We actually did want to play that, but y'know, we need it to function.

Check out the full list after the jump.
Continue reading The bottom of the barrel

The bottom of the barrel originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Jan 2007 16:45:00 EST. By following these easy steps you'll be able to play as jolly St. Nick in LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy.

Step 1: At the Mos Eisley Cantina, enter the following two codes: CL4U5H (for Santa hat and red clothes) and TYH319 (for white beard Extra)

Step 2: Go to the Character Customizer and create the proper costume. Use a human head, the appropriate red clothing ... and don't forget the red cap! Santa can wield the weapon of your choice -- we recommend the green or red lightsaber to seasonally complement his shiny red duds. (Remember, the color of his lightsaber decides whether his Force powers are naughty or nice.)

Step 3: In the Extras menu, activate Disguise 3.

Step 4: Enter the character-based level of your choice in Free Play.

A cute little thing for the holiday season. Now it's time for Santa Miis, Santa Sims and whatever else you creative people out there can come up with. The program's creator took his existing app that uses the MacBook's built-in tilt sensor to transform your computer into a lightsaber, and took it one step further. Coupling that functionality with the data retrieved by the recently released DarwiinRemote, WiiSaber was born. Pair your Wii-mote with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac and swing it around to make authentic lightsaber sounds so you can finally live out your <strike>Star Wars kid</strike> Stephen Colbert fantasies.

ps- Yeah, we tried it. It works great ... just be sure you're alone.

[Via plasticbag.org]
A Wii, a Mac, and a lightsaber walk into a bar originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Dec 2006 17:25:00 EST. We hope so, because there's not much this week to tempt you away from last week's winners. Only a bare few new releases are set to brighten up shelves this week, and franchise licenses abound.

DS:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy

Lionel Trains: On Track

Star Wars: Lethal Alliance
