Harnessing the power of Nintendo franchises for charity, the folks at TripleSpeedRunners will be spending 48 hours this weekend speed-running through games from the Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Kirby series. Live streaming of the event will be handled on the crew's website, with live commentary and chat available to cheer the players -- or jeer 'em if you're a player hater.

All proceeds from donations during the event will go to DC Outreach, an organization that provides worldwide support to families affected by Dyskeratosis Congenita. Last time TSR got together, it raised $1,140 for the DC charity, but we know with the full support of the Joystiq BioMass behind them we can help them double that. Right, folks?

The speed-runs kick off this Friday at 7PM ET sharp.
TripleSpeedRunners take on Nintendo trio for charity originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 02:00:00 EST. Cuthbert lead development of the original SNES game as its unreleased sequel, and his company created StarFox Command for DS. It won't likely be involved in any eventual Wii installment in the franchise.

Cuthbert says he might be up for another StarFox "maybe in another 10 years," saying that a Wii version would "be a big project, like 100 people on the staff. It's just not something we really want to do. I'm sure someone will make it. Maybe [Nintendo] will go back to Namco." Remember StarFox: Assault? We try not to.

In a slight jab at Shigeru Miyamoto, Cuthbert told G4 that the legendary designer probably won't listen to "core" gamers' wants for a new StarFox, saying, "Miyamoto doesn't really care about that. He wants to make what he wants to make, so he just goes ahead and gets it done." Was that a snap we just heard?
Q Games: No interest in more StarFox, Miyamoto doesn't listen to the 'core' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 04 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST.
Kids, don't forget to set your alarms for Nintendo's E3 press conference in the morning -- 9:00 AM PDT! Though the Star Fox hero will likely miss the event, there is sure to be at least one or two Nintendo DS minitons, if not megatons.

Of course, we'll cover the conference and let you know if Nintendo announces a hardware upgrade, Metroid Dread, or any other rumored items that have made the rounds! And if the conference turns out to be a bust, at least we have this cute photo of a sleeping Fox McCloud.
Fox McCloud: 'Wake me up for Nintendo's conference' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 01:30:00 EST. Actually, you know what? This might beat both of them! Well, maybe not Wolf Link. That thing is nice.

The piece of papercraft was modeled after the Falco model used in Smash Bros. Brawl. Whether you're a Smash or Star Fox fan, you've got to appreciate how good this thing looks.

We can hardly believe it's made of paper! If you've been waiting almost two years for a deal on Star Fox Command, today's your lucky day. While $30 might have seemed too expensive for a game that only got decent reviews, $20 probably sounds a lot more enticing. Since this is an Amazon "Deal of the Day," though, you only have until 3am EST to decide whether or not to surrender your wallet to your impulses.

This blogger never got around to playing Star Fox Command, but do any of you readers have opinions on the game that you'd like to share with potential buyers?
Star Fox commands a cheaper price originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Apr 2008 14:00:00 EST.
Typical -- you finally get your hands on a (sort of) portable SNES, only for someone else to bring out a slimmer, more svelte model three and a half months down the line. Bah. Anyway, this latest handheld Super Nintendo mod is the mightily impressive work of a Ben Heck forum user (whose name we can't locate, due to the forums being down; leave a comment for credit and cookies!), who not only shows off his new baby by playing Star Fox (much like the creator of the last portable SNES -- is Star Fox some kind of modding community in-joke?), but also spends some time listing everything he's squeezed in there.

As it happens, this includes a 5-inch Zenith LCD, a headphone socket, and ports for A/V out and a second controller. Kudos to you, sir, but we think we marginally prefer the retro look of the older, wooden version, even if it is heftier.

[Via Engadget]
Latest portable SNES mod is actually portable originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. So the DS has been on the receiving end of some great games from Nintendo's most popular franchises. We had the excellent Phantom Hourglass, the million-billion-selling New Super Mario Bros. and some solid installments in the Animal Crossing and StarFox franchises. But what's next?

Which one of Nintendo's franchises do you want to see hit the DS next? A new Punch-Out!!! game? Or what about the next installment in the Pikmin franchise? The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handhelds and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

While few would describe Will Laren's art as pleasing to the eye, his style -- ungraceful strokes, watercolors, and hand-written monologues providing the piece's humorous context -- certainly grows on you. His characters rarely fit common standards of beauty, either, often depicted with unattractive expressions, their hair a messy nest of lines, their mouths contorted, lips snarling. Still, there's something that draws us to their eccentric caricatures, vulgar patter, and rap culture allusions; we can't get enough of his work.

Very few of Laren's pieces have anything to do with video games, and none of them reference handheld gaming at all, but his canvases, ring-bound notepads and moleskine notebooks, sort of qualify as "portables," so that's our justification for featuring his art this week. Plus, the comics can be pretty hilarious. Flip past the break for a look.
Continue reading The DS Life: The artwork of Will Laren

The DS Life: The artwork of Will Laren originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST. And we thought you'd might like to see it too. TechEBlog has featured one of the strangest things to come out of the woodwork in a while -- one SNES squeezed into a somewhat portable wooden case and outfitted with speakers, a PSOne screen and a headphone jack. Based on the video above, it looks like Fox crashes his Arwing and finds Diddy in trouble with some long, snake-like creature. Brawl. Glidewell lists among her credentials for video game voice over and motion capture three characters from the upcoming game: Krystal, Knuckle Joe, and Zero Suit Samus.

We don't know how Krystal will be incorporated into Brawl, if at all; she could be an assist trophy, a stage-centric distraction, a cameo in the single player storyline, or even a fully-fledged playable character. Then again, Krystal might've been cut entirely, or the resume is simply mistaken.

If it was up to us, we'd prefer the disc space be used to include a Pikmin wearing a Virtual Boy (thanks for the mental image, Justin), but we don't get a say in the matter. Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Though we featured a number of Zelda commercials earlier this week, like Vanessa Williams, we've saved the best for last. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, arguably the finest handheld game ever released, had its share of unusual ads, relying on corny rappers and wacky puppetry to sell the ARPG in the US and Japan. In the UK, however, gamers were treated to the slapstick humor of one of Britain's most distinguished comedians.
Continue reading Promotional Consideration: Drop Dead Zelda

Promotional Consideration: Drop Dead Zelda originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 07 Oct 2007 12:00:00 EST. As if we didn't hate Fox in Smash Bros. enough, we now learn the guy's Final Smash has him piloting a huge tank. You should be familiar with the tank's arsenal of maneuvers, including hovering, doing barrel rolls and firing large bursts from its cannon. Seriously, it looks like too good of a Final Smash. Fox gets that much cheaper, we suppose.

The other half of the update deals with shielding and dodging. Dodging will allow you to perform backflips and sidesteps, even rolling to your opponent's back, to get your character out of danger and find your opponent surprised and vulnerable.

Read - Shielding and Dodging
Read - Fox Final Smash
Dojo update: Fox Final Smash and some hot dodging action originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 17:08:00 EST.
Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

Traditionally, consoles have had to carry over hardware from previous generations in order to offer backward compatibility. This can be thought of as a burden, as the costs of including that hardware might be better used increasing the specs and features of the system for the benefit of new games.

This generation marks a change in the method of operations in providing backward compatibility. The Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (in select models and territories), and Wii use a process known as software emulation to provide backward compatibility with their predecessors, so that they don't have to include that old hardware. What emulation does is allow one set of hardware to mimic the functions of another set of hardware. Emulation isn't a new technique, and it isn't exclusive to consoles. In fact, many people have been using it for years to play games on hardware other than for which it was developed.

Revolutionary: Emulation-ary originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Sep 2007 13:30:00 EST. Today is a double update over at the dojo, revealing the assist trophy of Andross (the boss from StarFox) and Meta Knight's special moves. Andross' inclusion in the game (which is quite awesome, we might add) has him taking up the role of assist trophy, as once he is summoned, he quickly retreats to the background and gets ready to spit out a stream of ploygons set to damage your opponents.

Read - Andross assist trophy
Read - special moves breakdown
Dojo update: Andross and special moves breakdown originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 10:30:00 EST. Not only does it allow us to play games that never get released in the US, but it also gives us freedom to choose the cheapest version of worldwide-release games. Renchi.com has marked down a load of DS games, and there's plenty of stuff for US gamers to enjoy.

First, the Japanese versions of US games. You can get Yoshi Touch & Go (Catch! Touch! Yoshi!), Mega Man ZX (Rockman ZX), Star Fox Command, the just-released Honeycomb Beat, and a few others for $10. If you want a uniquely Japanese experience, there's a bunch of stuff including Mawasunda!!, a lot of miscellaneous non-games and puzzle games (including an amusing-looking coloring game), and a nice selection of D3's Simple Series stuff. Stock is rapidly diminishing, so go browse right now.

[Thanks, joe!]
Decent sale on imports at Renchi originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 13:00:00 EST. We see two possibilities regarding this list of Wii games that "will be coming out" according to WiiYou.com. First: they scooped the entire world and got an exclusive look at a list of unannounced Wii games that nobody has heard anything at all about. Second, they didn't.

We're looking at the list, and it seems to be about half educated guessing and half dreaming. Call us cynics, but we're going to wait for verification before we go put our money down on F-Zero or Metroid Xterme.

Of course Sega Nerds latched on to the listing for Shadow the Hedgehog 2, but, in our minds, that's not the biggest news item on the list. We'd be more interested in hearing about the two Zelda games. Check after the post break for the full list.
Continue reading Rumor alert: Pretty much everything you could think of

Rumor alert: Pretty much everything you could think of originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 May 2007 10:55:00 EST. What is known is that Nintendo has issued an updated version of StarFox 64. What isn't known is what it does.

NeoGAFfer Nuclear Muffin (judging by the name, a level-headed character) reported that after downloading the update this morning, he found the game slowing down in the same way the original Nintendo 64 version. Again, no idea if this is true, or if it's a delusion created by someone trying to find an effect of this update, but it's terrifying if true.

Normally, we're all about accurate presentation of emulated games, but we have no problem with Nintendo fixing the resolution and speed of N64 games, because they totally need it. We really hope they haven't decided to unfix it.
Rumor: Starfox 64 update restores historically accurate slowdown? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:00:00 EST. No, no, thanks to silly trademarks, it's Lylat Wars. Whatever name you use, it's still one of the greats among shooters on Nintendo systems, and it's a nice cap to all the other shooters they've released. It's no surprise they're only releasing one other title alongside this one. What is that game? Well, long before Brain Age, we had Donkey Kong Jr. Math to make math fun, and now you can have it on your Wii. Math and <strike>monkeys</strike> apes -- can there be anything better?

After last week's serious focus on kingdoms waging war, it comes as a relief to see Nintendo's Virtual Console service returning to its former status, namely that of an anarchic menagerie of anthropomorphic troublemakers. This week, we have foxes recklessly piloting spaceships, dragon's uttering foul words and mutated turtles kicking people in the face. Just who's in charge here?

As you might have surmised (admittedly, the headline is a big help), Star Fox 64 (N64) tops the list of retro goodies arriving on the Wii today:

Star Fox 64 - N64 - 1,000 points ($10)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - NES - 600 points ($6)

Dragon's Curse - TurboGrafx 16 - 600 points ($6)

All three titles are available for download now. What isn't available for download at this time, however, is an explanation as to why we're expected to shell out 100 points ($1) above the NES norm for Konami's turtle brawler. Perhaps we're being fined for that terrible pun in the last sentence.
Star Fox 64 arrives, Virtual Console does barrel roll originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 12:31:00 EST. The wait seemed well worth it, as the famed Nintendo composer's first public appearance in the United States drew a standing ovation from the hundreds-strong assembled crowd today.

Kondo, who has worked on the music for the Mario, Zelda and Star Fox series, among others, stressed three main points in making good game audio:

Rhythm in game audio is not just having a catchy beat, but matching your beat to the animation and button presses in the game. "If the music doesn't reflect the rhythm of the game, it might as well be piped in from a source outside the room," Kondo said through a translator.

Balance in game audio means not just balancing things like sound effect and music volume, but also bringing individual audio pieces in a game together as a single composition, with a defined introduction, bridge and ending. This is why Kondo always submits pieces to his director four or five at a time, so they won't be given equal weight but instead be balanced in the correct way.

Interactivity in game music can be as overt as a faster tempo when time is running out in Super Mario Bros. or as subtle as slight phrasing changes in each trip through the overworld in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Kondo stressed that "this ability of the video game medium, which is not possible with CDs, movies etc., is a very interesting and unique feature."

Attendees of this year's Video Games Live concert will be pleased to learn that the man himself will be making an appearance and performing "one of his favorite melodies" on stage. Can't say we've heard that one -- could someone hum a few bars?

The event, which brings GDC to a symphonic end, is being held at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium, San Francisco on March 9 at 8PM. We'll let the list do the talking for us:

NES:

Excitebike

Ice Climber

Dr. Mario

Ice Hockey

Soccer

Super Nintendo:

Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Kirby's Super Star

Super Metroid

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Nintendo 64:

Mario Kart 64

Starfox 64

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

"Mario Brothers", which is technically the name of the arcade title already coming to the VC at launch, is presumably the actual Super Mario Bros., which failed to make it across the Pacific in time for November 19th. The biggest name on this list is certainly Mario RPG, a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Squaresoft USA (now known as Square-Enix). Besides being an absolutely excellent game, it shows that Square-Enix is committed to bringing some of the very best of its SNES golden-era RPGs to the Virtual Console. We don't want to say it, we shouldn't, really ... but dammit, we need to ... Chrono Trigger?

[Thanks, Cian C.!]

[Update 1: Dammit, we can't count.]
The awesome just keeps on coming: more Virtual Console games [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Nov 2006 21:44:00 EST. Play-Nintendo has a "reliable list" (yeah, we know how those are) of games that are rumored to be on the Virtual Console. But it looks reasonable, and in fact, some of the titles are already confirmed by various sources. Their list is packed with classic titles, and some of them (oh, Castlevania, how we love you) are expected but still exciting, and others many of us still play on lazy Sunday afternoons (Ocarina of Time, anyone?) If this list turns out to be the real deal, we may have to take some extended breaks from our actual Wii games. A fanboy's life is full of difficult choices.

Play-Nintendo also reports that their "source" confirmed five brand new games for the Virtual Console, but they couldn't reveal the details. We'll see.

What are you dying to see? Frankly, we think Super Mario Bros. 3 is a necessity, if only because we know there'd be videos everywhere of fanboys reenacting scenes from The Wizard.

If you could add any three games to this list, what would you choose?

Full list after the jump.
Continue reading Speculating on the Virtual Console [Update 1]

Speculating on the Virtual Console [Update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 07:01:00 EST. Issued in 2001, the 23,000+ word document details important game features such as "a score-giving condition is detected according to a relation of the player object to another object." (read: shoot stuff for points) and "... a plurality of different courses through which a player can successively advance by successfully completing a current one of said plurality of courses" (read: a level select screen)

The patent seems to focus a lot of energy on unoriginal, pedestrian features such as location-specific hit-detection and allowing players to replay a level for a higher score. Are they really trying to claim ownership of such basic video gaming ideas, or is this legalese just boilerplate that gets filed as a matter of course? Either way, if Nintendo ever files a patent-infringement lawsuit against some game that "makes it possible to... advance to a same course (i.e. replay) even after clearing a course or scene difficult to manipulate," we'll be sure to cover it here.

[Via GameSetWatch]

Read -- Patent Arcade summary
Read -- Full patent at the USPTO
Nintendo patents high scores, wet water originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Sep 2006 14:25:00 EST.
Mad video review master 'JoshuaZimmerman' brings us this lengthy look at Starfox Command, but we get the distinct feeling he may not really care. He spends most of the nine minutes going over gameplay and options in mission and wi-fi modes, blah blah blah, lets us know how he feels about the sound and the dialogue, blah blah blah, and overall, offers positive impressions of the game. We think, at least. While their two biggest gripes about the game are the amount of time it takes to complete the single-player campaign (if you do not take the alternate routes) and overall ease of succeeding in combat, including boss fights, aren't these basically what the only problems people had with the stellar N64 game were?

Composing the longer list of things the guys over at Gamebrink enjoyed about the title, the fast-paced, tense gameplay and non-linear progression take the top positions. Also, they state that the stylus-exclusive control of the title really works well and is implemented excellently into the game's overall formula of Arwing-based combat.
Starfox Command reviewed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Aug 2006 11:30:00 EST. While you would think they'd be on-hand with the Wii, attempting to get it as much exposure as possible before its launch later on this year, instead the company is looking to strengthen its already huge grip on gaming with the DS.

That's right, no Wii and nothing but DS will be available to cosplaying comic fans in the southern California area during the ultimate show for comics. Those cosplaying as Nintendo characters will also get a chance to win prizes such as DS Lites, software, and other junk.

Some of the titles available at Nintendo's booth are Mario Hoops: 3 on 3, Elite Beat Agents, Starfox Command, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. If you're a DS Fanboy reader attending the show and would like to send us some pictures, we guarantee you'll be *handsomely rewarded.

*We're good at making people disappear.
Nintendo and DS in full force at Comic-Con originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Jul 2006 11:00:00 EST. According to the latest Japanese mag Famitsu, players can now enjoy that same shaky feeling they had in Metroid Pinball or Warioware Twisted on 30 different stages in Star Fox.

Something else to look forward to is the game's multiplayer aspects. Star Fox will take full use of Nintendo's super sweet Wi-Fi connection and give wannabe pilots the ability to battle each other four at a time -- ad hoc players can take on as many as 8 at a time.

This game can't come fast enough. It's getting a little tiring just beating little noobs on Tetris every night.
Star Fox DS details surface originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Jul 2006 11:55:00 EST. This most likely implies a return to the multi-path stage advancement from the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64, which is good news for long-time Fox fans. Also listed are the capabilities for both online play and eight-person local wireless competition. If Nintendo can manage to make the stylus control scheme intuitive and natural, we could have yet another killer-app on our hands.

As wonderful as Google's translation abilities are (Strategic map 3D shooting of the new feeling which is due to touch operation), any bilingual readers out there care to give us a slightly less mangled version of the information?

[Thanks Redfield!]
A return to series roots for Star Fox: Command? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Jun 2006 11:02:00 EST. Turns out Fox is all alone now, with his comrades having gone on to greener pastures. With Falco off exploring the vast regions of space, Peppy taking up the role of a general, and Slippy having found the toad of his dreams, Fox continues to fight the good fight alone. This game also marks the return of Star Wolf.

Gameplay will be handled via two distinctly different modes. In the map mode, you're charged with using the stylus to trace out a route to your designation, encountering enemies along the way, which then takes you into the adventure mode where you can fly your plane and take out said enemies.
Starfox Command screens and info originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Jun 2006 10:26:00 EST. The video, which is a bit on the short side and fails to provide any kind of long-term satisfaction, shows Fox flying about one of the game's areas, dodging Tesla-like towers that fire red pulsing beams.

[Note: Clicking on the graphic to the right or the Read link at the bottom of the post will take you directly to the .mov file for the clip, which will require Quicktime to play.]

[Thanks Mikami!]
Starfox Command video originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 08:30:00 EST.
