Update: And it's over. And there was a lo-ho-ot of news. If you missed the live version, you can check out a replay of the North American Direct above.

After a wee flurry of Nintendo Direct broadcasts at the top of the year, it's been kind of a while since we last saw Satoru Iwata do that weird hands thing, or make Reggie Fils-Aime's grasp of other languages look terrible. So that's why we're eager and keen about this morning's batch of Nintendo Direct. Oh, and all the news and announcements and stuff.

North America and Europe's Directs are 3DS-focused, while Japan's is based around 'The Year of Luigi.' Japan's Direct should also provide some details on April's Wii U system update, which is expected next week.

As ever, we've got the North American stream up high for you to watch here on Joystiq, while Europe and Japan are below the equator - wait no, that's geography (and not good geography). They're below the break. Each stream is scheduled to begin at 10AM ET (7AM PT, 3PM UK), and we'll have all the news on the site as it happens.

Watch Japan's Wii U Nintendo Direct live right here [update: it's over!]

Nintendo has a Direct broadcast bright and early this morning, presenting 35 minutes' worth of stream-age on Wii U system features. While we're not expecting new info on any games, there may be more details on how stuff like Miiverse, for example, actually works.

So rub the sleepy out of your eyes, maybe grab some toast, and plonk yourself somewhere comfy to watch the stream here on Joystiq. It starts at 6AM ET (3AM Pacific, 11AM British).

Update: The broadcast is now over. As expected, it focused heavily on Miiverse, with demos of how its social networking-style wall integrates with games like New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land. We also saw a demo of the system's video chat feature (imaginatively titled Wii U Chat), which included on-screen scribbling. As you can see below the break, the segment featured a cameo from none other than Reggie Fils-Aime. The Nintendo of America chief's attempt at Japanese was noble, but it seemed a bit lame when followed by the excellent English of Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata.

Watch a live stream of Capcom playing Darkstalkers Resurrection right here [update: it's over!]

Following its reveal yesterday, Capcom is hosting a live gameplay session of Darkstalkers Resurrection from the New York Comic Con, and you can watch it right here. Resurrection is a double-pack of Darkstalkers' Revenge and Darkstalkers 3 in one single downloadable game, and is coming to XBLA and PSN early next year for 1200 MSP/$14.99 respectively. The stream is set to kick off at 10AM ET/7AM PT.

Update: Capcom's live gameplay session is over. On a side note, the developers talked plenty about the potential for a future brand new Darkstalkers game, with comparisons to how Marvel vs. Capcom 2 came to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network before MvC 3 came out. If Darkstalkers Resurrection is anything resembling a hit, chances are 'Darkstalkers 4' is on.

PSA: League of Legends playoffs continue today

The second season of the League of Legends world championships is happening right now, with quarterfinal and semifinals matches scheduled for today. The world championship match is set for Saturday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. PST. The winning team will take home half of the $2 million prize pool given out to contestants.

Here's the schedule for today's events, viewable on Twitch.tv and the Riot Games site:

12:00 p.m PST - Quarterfinals: WE vs CLG.EU
2:00 p.m. PST - Semifinals: M5 vs TPA
4:00 p.m. PST - Semifinals: Azubu vs TBD

Watch the 3DS Nintendo Direct for Europe live right here [update: it's over!]

Nintendo of Europe has a Nintendo Direct starting at 7PM British Time (2PM ET), and you can watch the live stream right here on Joystiq - right above where these words are, in fact. NoE President Satoru Shibata is set to take us through some 3DS games coming to the continent, and we're ready to report on all the goings on.

Update: It's all over, albeit with a little bit of streaming trouble on Nintendo's side. Nonetheless, there's plenty of news to devour. That includes a bunch of 3DS games now available via the European eShop, and a December 7 release date for Paper Mario: Sticker Star. You can follow all the reveals via our always handy 3DS tag.

Watch American and European Wii U streams live [update: it's over!]

With the Japanese prelude come and gone, Nintendo are set to announce the price and release date for Wii U in North America and Europe. Nintendo of America is hosting a Wii U event in New York, while Nintendo of Europe has a Wii U Nintendo Direct broadcast.

Before it all kicks off, we already have a confirmation from our man in NYC of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for Wii U. So expect to see that game feature in both the presentations.

We've got both streams for you right here, with the Nintendo of America one up above and the European one after the jump just below (just like in georgaphy.) Both streams start at 10am ET (3pm UK time, 7am Pacific), and we'll have all the info for you here on Joystiq as it comes in.

Play PC games on your PS3 with StreamMyGame

We're not just ragging on the PS3 when we say this -- we're all admittedly going through a bit of a video game drought. Perhaps there's a few PC games from last year's surplus that you'd like to play, but you've recently developed serious allergies to computer monitors ... and you lack the appropriate cables to hook your PC up to your television. Okay, the requirements for the StreamMyGame service to be useful are somewhat outlandish, but at least you have the option now, right?

The service lets you stream games running on your Windows or Linux PC onto your Linux-enabled PS3 via a LAN. It's not as complicated as it sounds, and is completely free of charge -- plus, imagine how freaked out your friends will be when they walk in the room and see you running Halo 2 off your PS3. Tell them it's the new PS360, and cackle maniacally as they run to Best Buy to get their own.

Forget the field, watch the soccer match on your PSP

Back in my day, everyone brought their fancy new transistor radios to the ball game to listen to the play-by-play. And the players people didn't wear their ball caps backwards, like you young'ns today! And Cracker Jack cost only a nickel! And certain folk weren't allowed on the field, dagnabbit!

Well, the times are a-changin', because soon people attending London Arsenal soccer matches will be able to get streaming stats and replays on their PSPs via a program called S.PORT (Back in my day, dots went at the end of sentences, consarnit). The program even allows live streaming of the game, for when you have to go to use the facilities (Back in my day, they weren't called the "facilities." It was called an outhouse, and it smelled awful. But did we complain? Noooooo.)

At this rate, soon you won't even have to go to your local sports stadium to see the game. With all the technology and such these days, I bet someone'll come up with a way to beam images of the game directly into your home, so you can watch from the comfort of your couch. Boy, won't that be something.

Big Brother taps PSP, in UK

UK PSP owners may be surprised to find their handhelds' web browsers being automatically directed to Channel 4's 4Radio website when launching from one of The Cloud's 7,500 public wi-fi hotspots. Don't worry, it's all part of the plan.

According to Channel 4 Radio director Nathalie Schwarz, the deal with wi-fi provider The Cloud is part of an effort to "connect with a young, mobile audience," the lot who's hungry for "bold and mischievous radio programming," but doesn't want to turn on the radio. If you find Celebrity Big Brother podcasts being aggressively pushed onto your PSP completely invasive, you're not alone. This is one PSP novelty we hope is never adopted again.

Channel 4 streams content to UK PSP owners

British commuters are getting access to a very cool new feature ... provided that they have PSPs. Channel 4, the edgiest television station in the UK, will offer streaming programming for PSP owners at one of 7,500 wi-fi locations owned by Cloud. Nathalie Schwarz, director of Channel 4 Radio, said: "Becoming the first broadcaster to make radio content available wirelessly on PSPs will help 4Radio connect with a young, mobile audience, making our programming easily available whenever and wherever they want."

It's expected that this service will expand to offer full television shows, such as the new Celebrity Big Brother (pictured above).

Connect360 adds video streaming support for Macs

Nullriver quietly snuck WMV streaming support into its Mac-compatible Connect360 software a few weeks back. Until this recent development, Mac users had been locked out of the streaming party, which has been raging on PCs since Xbox 360's Fall Dashboard Update (just last week, on-the-fly transcoding was made possible).

While Connect360 may lack on-the-fly transcoding, streaming support restores some of the balance lost between PC and Mac users after the initial release of the Fall Update. And we like balance.

On-the-fly video transcoding for Xbox 360

TVersity has released a patch enabling on-the-fly WMV transcoding for efficient-minded users seeking to stream video content from their PCs to Xbox 360. While incomplete, the patch previews the sort of functionality the final version will offer, including the ability to upscale videos to higher resolutions.

Our recent how-to guide highlighted the tediousness of the current transcoding method. We look to TVersity to render this old process obsolete. Try it out (extract to TVersity's Media Server folder) and lend your feedback.

Without further ado, I present the inner workings of my iron-clad genius:

well yet another week of hardware sales, I wonder if my post will beat ludwig's, I dunno, we were talking about it earlier and his idea was good as hell, but of course i'd never admit it, damn south africans. when do they even get the wii? i guess probably not for awhile, sucks to be him, but he DID order phoenix wright 2, i wonder if he got it yet, i wanna wait for the american version because of all the typos in the game, why do those bother me so much, oh well, ive plenty of play, guitar hero 2 hasn't even left my tv screen in like days, my roommates are out there right now playing tonight i'm gonna rock you tonight, i really like that song, but man freebird is just too cool, i need to practice it...oh, and not to mention final fantasy 12, or okami which i still havent beaten, or tales of the abyss which I havent even OPENED, or final fantasy V advance, and FFIII in a few days, and yoshi's island 2 and oh yeah those four more games i'm picking up for the wii (twilight princess is 70+ hours?) DAMN YOU VIDEO GAMES my grades are spiraling out of control...well, not really, i got a 97 on my digital design test, take THAT schwartz, wait no one wants to hear about my academic life, well whatever. hell YES battlestar tonight, though i have to set the torrent for it since i'm going to an mc chris concert, which means i better finish this damn post and get on with it. peace out.

How-To: Transcode & stream videos on Xbox 360

Last week's Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard update added support for the Windows Media Video (WMV) video codec. The feature was a welcomed gain for non-Media Center users who have been limited to photo and music sharing between their Windows PCs and Xbox 360s -- and to anyone who's longed to watch video files on 360 via a thumb drive or CD/DVD.

Unfortunately, licensing fees and digital rights concerns have limited the patch to WMV-support only. Being Microsoft's proprietary format, WMV is neither popular or oft-used, taking a backseat to preferred codecs like DivX and XviD. And so, we're still left scrambling for a solution to getting our video content onto Xbox 360.

PiMPstreamer homebrew streams video

One of things I wanted in the next official firmware upgrade was the ability to stream video. A reader by the name of Joel stated that "the PSP doesn't have a Core 2 Duo, it has 237 Megahertz. Live streaming video needs mmuch more."

Well, looks like homebrew has proven you wrong. Very wrong. A homebrew application called PiMPstreamer has just been updated, and the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. The program lets you stream movies and music from your PC to your PSP. Movies can include traditional MPEG, AVI and even WMV files. It's only been tested on 1.5 firmware, so those of you that homebrew-compatible PSPs might want to check it out. For the rest of us, I think it's a clear indicator that the PSP is very capable of a video streaming function, and we should demand Sony implement it in the next firmware.

Stream music from your PC to your PSP

Want to listen to your iTunes music from anywhere in your home? The iTunesRSSServer allows you to use your PSP's RSS functionality to stream your iTunes library. Sure there are alternatives, but none are as easy or as free. Obviously, purchased music and videos won't work on the PSP, but the program is smart enough to not display those files. There are a few glitches I discovered in my test: it appears that downloading music files corrupts them (especially AAC files).
