We haven't checked the category yet, but we're sure it's ... oh. It's the Golden Tomato for "Worst Reviewed Movie of the Year."

Disheartening? Sure. But keep in mind: Though it only netted four percent positive reviews, those two good ones came from the New York Times and Variety, so Street Fighter fans still sort of have reason to keep their Chuns up. Sort of.

Do not adjust your eyes, you are seeing multiple Chun-Lis. After transforming LA's Chinatown Mountain Bar into M. Bison's favorite watering hole, Mike Ross was awarded $2,000 for placing first in best-of-16 Street Fighter IV tournament. The one-night-only event was organized by Capcom and I Am 8-bit to "celebrate" the DVD and Blu-ray release of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. We think "celebrate" is the wrong word, but according to Capcom's Unity blog, that's what the party was organized for.

We send our congratulations to Mike for winning the tourney and send our condolences to Capcom for being forced to giveaway nearly all profit* they extracted from the travesty that was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

*For the record, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li made a few million bones, but it was one helluva train wreck.

Though you would think that the critical obliteration of a major motion picture based on a gaming franchise would cause concern for said franchise's progenitor, Capcom seems to be unaffected by the poor reception of the recently released film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. In response to the movie's harsh scrutiny, Capcom communications head Chris Kramer simply replied, "Critics were unkind to the first Street Fighter movie as well, but that film has been ridiculously profitable for Capcom over the last decade." Sadly, that success came at the cost of the life of our beloved Raúl Juliá. Was it worth it, Capcom?

Kramer explained that from this point on, Capcom will be adopting the cinematic strategies of Marvel Comics, whose heavily branded, co-produced films have helped revitalize sales of its ink-and-paper offerings. If the company is following Marvel's cinematic example, we sure hope Legend of Chun-Li is its rare, Elektra-esque misstep, and that future titles (Clock Tower and Lost Planet adaptations are currently in development) will be of a more favorable, Spider-Man 2-esque caliber.

We're trying to decide what's more embarrassing to Chun-Li. Is it that her movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li came in eighth place in the weekend box office chart with just $4.7 million? Or is it that she was beat by an animated character, tween sensations the Jonas Brothers, that abysmal mall cop movie and a guy pretending to be an old black woman?

It's a tough blow, but at least you know it's not the most humiliating celluloid-related debacle she's ever been through, as long as this NSFW gem is in her past.

If at first you don't succeed ... fail, fail again. That must have been the mantra during filming of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, staring Canadian sweetheart Kristin Kreuk. Can anyone even feign surprise that the latest Street Fighter flick is a train wreck? It isn't easy following up a classic, and by that we of course mean Street Fighter: The Movie, staring the Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yes, we said classic. It was one of the greatest unintentional comedies of our generation.
  • AMCtv.com: "I much prefer the flamboyant badness of the '94 flick to the attractive, even-keeled mediocrity of this one. Jean-Claude Van Damme's stock just rose considerably."
  • WJFK-FM (CBS Radio) (-5/5): "As a fan of the video game series, I can honestly say that this is hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen. Chris Klein is so bad that he made the movie a comedy."
  • IGN Movies (1.5/5): "It may not be as gaudy or goofy as its predecessor, but it's far more boring and banal. It's a videogame adaptation that loses sight of what made the game popular to begin with: it was fun."

Chris Klein: [This is where Chris should have said "What the f**k is a gamester?" but he didn't, so he lost his chance to be on Joystiq.]
Kristin Kreuk: I've never been a gamer but I've seen a lot of Street Fighter and it was really popular when I was in late elementary school into high school so I'm very familiar with it. I've seen a lot of people play it."

So, no worries, everyone. She's watched people play. Also, even better news: Producer Ashok Amritraj says he hopes the movie is the beginning of a franchise! You know, we were never too crazy about Wednesdays, but this one's turning out to be just peachy.

Just as Japanese players were warming up to Chun Li's massive paws in Street Fighter IV, Kristin Kreuk was fending off man hands herself during a Tokyo press event promoting the upcoming release of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

While smiling and nodding to onlooking cameras and attending press, the February 12 event saw the former Smallville actress face off against another Chun-Li impersonator, this time of the male variety, with ridiculous results. Bask in the absurdity at Game Watch, knowing full well this is better than anything we're going to see on the big screen.

Not since the great Christopher Lambert's powerful, moving portrayal of Raiden the thunder god in the film adaptation of Mortal Kombat have we been this excited for a new movie based on a fighting game. Having seen the latest trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, we think we can safely say that it will leave Mortal Kombat in the dust. It's really got everything, including characters that look absolutely nothing like their in-game counterparts, powerfully cheesy music, wildly exaggerated sound effects and spectacular explosions. And did you see the key chain advertised at the end for only ¥1,300? We are so getting one of those.

Patrick Aiello, the producer for the upcoming film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (starring Kristin "Lana Lang" Kreuk!), believes Street Fighter IV will launch alongside the film. Aiello tells GameDaily that the "film and game release dates will coincide." According to IMDB, the Street Fighter movie currently has a release date of February 27, 2009.

Although hardcore Street Fighter fans may be upset that the game isn't coming out at the end of this year as originally announced, there's always the option of playing it in arcades at diverse locations on this little planet.
