To celebrate a massive 300 billion coins collected in <em>NSMB2</em> worldwide, Nintendo released the free-for-now Gold Classics Pack based on iconic levels from <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> and <em>Super Mario Bros. 3.</em><br /><br />The first of the pack's three courses looks to be based on 1-1 and 1-2 from the first <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> As for the second course, that looks like a mixture of offerings from <i>SMB3</i>, including the always-vicious arcade minigame. Finally, the third course invites players back to Bowser's castle, as per <em>SMB1</em>. As shown by the above Nintendo Direct, the pack offers <em>NSMB2</em>-themed twists on the two NES classics, including multiple routes.<br /><br />The nostalgia-stuffed DLC is free until January 31, 2013, after which it costs $2.50<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/27/new-super-mario-bros-2-gets-free-smb-and-smb3-levels-available/">New Super Mario Bros. 2 gets free SMB and SMB3 levels, available now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 10:00:00 EST. The "Month of Mario," as Nintendo calls it, puts one 3DS Virtual Console game on sale a week, from this Thursday through the August 19 launch of <em>NSMB2</em>.<br /><br />You'll be able to get <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> (NES) for $4 from July 26 to August 1. Starting August 2, <em>Super Mario Land</em> (Game Boy) will be $3. <em>Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins</em> (Game Boy) will be on sale for $3 on August 9.<em> Mario's Picross</em> (Game Boy as well) will be $3 the next week, starting August 16. That's a dollar off the normal price of each.<br /><br />That's also a lot of Mario games to play before ... another Mario game!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/24/downloadable-mario-3ds-games-go-on-sale-leading-up-to-new-super/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Downloadable Mario 3DS games go on sale leading up to New Super Mario Bros. 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/24/downloadable-mario-3ds-games-go-on-sale-leading-up-to-new-super/">Downloadable Mario 3DS games go on sale leading up to New Super Mario Bros. 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 10:00:00 EST. It is an especially cool and extravagant model, however. Pollock plans to build the entirety of <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> world 1-1, a project that requires an estimated 780,000 1x1 bricks.<br /><br />In addition to creating a showpiece for Lego conventions, Comic-Con, and PAX, Pollock has lofty goals for the project. It will "test the waters for a foundation I would like to start that will work with children doing healing art projects using Lego bricks." Should the "epic Mario" sculpture be successfully Kickstarted, construction will take place in "building parties" in Portland, and will result in a totally huge, amazing thing. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/kickstarter-seeks-funds-for-many-lego-bricks-to-make-super-mario/">Kickstarter seeks funds for many Lego bricks to make Super Mario Bros. world 1-1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 17:30:00 EST. However, without a direct quote, it seemed likely that he had been talking about the Wii U and the (confirmed) 3DS Super Mario game, and the two had become conflated. The other, less likely option, is that Miyamoto had let slip the existence of an unannounced game, which is out of character for anyone at Nintendo.<br /><br />However, that's exactly what happened. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-04-16-confirmed-nintendo-will-announce-a-new-super-mario-bros-game-for-the-wii-u-at-e3">Eurogamer</a> received confirmation from Nintendo. "In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," the Nintendo representative told the site. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."<br /><br />During the last E3, Nintendo showed a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/we-played-wii-u-plays-tech-demos/">Wii U game</a> (above) based on <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> <em>Wii.</em> It's possible that demo may have evolved into this new game, or it could be something totally different. All we know at this point is that it's a "Super Mario Bros. game."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/nintendo-showing-wii-u-mario-game-at-e3/">Nintendo showing Wii U Mario game at E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. Gaming culture certainly produces its fair share of posters and wall decals, granted, but what if you're looking for something a little more elegant? What if you want your house guests to think "young professional," rather than "college bachelor?" For you, there is the Super Mario Coin Block Lamp from 8BitLit.<br /><br />Available for $74.99 at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/90066890/interactive-super-mario-coin-block">the company's Etsy shop</a>, the lamp is made from laser-cut plexiglass and is illuminated by six LEDs. Switching the lamp on and off works exactly how you'd think, with each punch to the block's underside accompanied by an appropriate sound effect. Combine this thing with The Clapper and your apartment will be <em>so smooth</em> your guests will need guardrails.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/25/touch-sensitive-mario-coin-block-lamp-lights-up-our-hearts/">Touch-sensitive Mario coin block lamp lights up our hearts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 25 Feb 2012 13:30:00 EST. The first NES Ambassador game for 3DS is now available for purchase by non-Ambassadors! <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> is on the eShop now for five bucks. And if you already have it through the Ambassador Program, you can get a free update to add multiplayer and save states!<br /><br />There's also news for the Wii's Virtual Console: the Genesis version of Strider can be purchased today. We hadn't heard about a Genesis VC game in a while, so we looked into it. As far as we can tell, this is the first Genesis game on Wii in North America since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/vc-in-brief-sonic-and-knuckles-sega-genesis/"><em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em></a>, on February 15, 2010. It's been two years and a day since the last Genesis VC release.<br /><br />In fact, this appears to be the first Wii Virtual Console release of <em>any</em> kind since <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/25/nintendoware-weekly-gargoyles-quest-the-ignition-factor/">The Ignition Factor</a> </em>six months ago. Enjoy it! This doesn't happen very often.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/nintendoware-weekly-metal-gear-solid-3d-demo-strider/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Metal Gear Solid 3D demo, Strider</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/nintendoware-weekly-metal-gear-solid-3d-demo-strider/">NintendoWare Weekly: Metal Gear Solid 3D demo, Strider</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata assured investors today that a new 2D Super Mario game is in the works for 3DS, this one distinguished by its "side-scrolling action."<br /><br />Iwata offered no further information about the game in his presentation, but expects it to launch sometime within Nintendo's next fiscal year. That places the new Mario's debut sometime after March 2012 -- just far enough to complete <em>Super Mario 3D Land</em> and yearn for the days when things were nice and flat.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/26/new-side-scrolling-super-mario-headed-to-3ds/">New side-scrolling Super Mario headed to 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 22:48:00 EST. Following last week's release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/22/legend-of-zelda-is-japans-first-nes-release-for-3ds-virtual-con/"><em>The Legend of Zelda</em></a>, Super Mario Bros. will be available on January 5. Those without 3DS diplomatic immunity will have to pay &yen;500 ($6.44).<br />
<br />
The updated eShop versions of the Ambassador games add multiplayer, save state and sleep mode support and instruction manuals. So far, no NES games have been released on the eShop outside of Japan.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/28/super-mario-bros-updated-for-3ds-eshop-release-in-japan/">Super Mario Bros. updated for 3DS eShop release in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 09:35:00 EST. We realize nobody likes a Monday, but we've got something to help this one start off just a little cooler for you. From the floor of videogame-centric group art exhibition SUPER iam8bit, here's video of custom Koopa shell and Goomba Roomba covers that skittered across the show floor gobbling up everyone's Cheetoh crumbs. The custom mods are the handiwork of iRobot and fabricator Kelice Penney.<br />
<br />
Want to really chase away the Monday blues? Try saying "Goomba Roomba" out loud. Go on. We won't listen.<br />
<br />
... There, isn't that better?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/goomba-roombas-from-super-iam8bit-suck-away-the-monday-blues/">Goomba Roombas from SUPER iam8bit suck away the Monday blues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST. You guys are still doing speed-runs? Psh, speed-runs are<em> so</em> <em>2005</em>. These days, it's all about <em>low-score runs;</em> baffling attempts at calculated badness, wherein highly-skilled gamers do everything they can to do as little as possible.<br />
<br />
No one does better at doing poorly than YouTube power-gamer <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/NotEntirelySure">NotEntirelySure</a>, who recently completed the lowest-scoring no-death game of Super Mario Bros. ever, finishing the entire game with a trifling <em>600 points</em>. As a spectator sport, we think the low-score run has potential, although we're still not sure why our "average-score" runs never took off with the precision gaming community.<br />

Announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/game-music-superstars-contribute-new-music-to-play-for-japan-a/">last May</a> and originally slated for a June release, <em>Play For Japan: The Album</em> is finally available for your listening pleasure. The album features original tracks by 18 of gaming history's greatest composers, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill"><em>Silent Hill</em>'s</a> Akira Yamaoka, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a>'s Nobuko Toda, and if you buy the album from iTunes, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-bros"><em>Super Mario Bros.</em></a>'s Koji Kondo.<br />
<br />
The album is already available via iTunes in the US, Canada, and UK, and will be available everywhere else (from iTunes <em>and</em> Amazon) starting July 15. It costs $9.99 USD, one hundred percent of which benefits the Japanese Red Cross' efforts in rebuilding Japan's infrastructure. It also benefits your eardrums. The full track listing is after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/09/play-for-japan-the-album-helps-rebuild-japan-available-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Play For Japan: The Album helps rebuild Japan, available now</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/09/play-for-japan-the-album-helps-rebuild-japan-available-now/">Play For Japan: The Album helps rebuild Japan, available now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 19:00:00 EST. In a recent interview with <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/jun/18/bob-hoskins-interview-neverland">Guardian</a>, legendary actor Bob Hoskins went on record about the highlights of his prestigious cinematic career. In one section of the quickfire Q&amp;A, Hoskins talked about one of his greatest film achievements to date:<br />
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	<strong>"What is the worst job you've done?</strong><br />
	Super Mario Brothers.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>What has been your biggest disappointment?</strong><br />
	Super Mario Brothers.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>If you could edit your past, what would you change?</strong><br />
	I wouldn't do Super Mario Brothers."</blockquote>
We're having trouble comprehending why Hoskins is so hostile towards Cinergi Pictures' 1993 blockbuster -- we think it set the bar for video game-to-movie adaptations. It just set that bar very, very low. Like, low enough for <em>Street Fighter</em> to hurdle over with grace and ease, which is saying something.<br />

The recently opened Tempest Freerunning Academy in Los Angeles has put together a promotional video of its gym that hits several notes obligating us to write about it. The fantastic feats of athleticism in the clip begin with various free runners flipping, climbing and jumping across a set inspired by the 8-bit world of <em>Super Mario Bros</em>.<br />
<br />
The rest of the video just fills us with jealous awe, considering the closest we'll probably ever get to pulling off some of the featured stunts is when we play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mirrors-edge">Mirror's Edge</a></em> or the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/01/brink-preview/"><em>Brink</em></a>. <em>Actually</em>, we take that back. We <em>could</em> totally do the stunts, but we'd have to call ahead to the hospital and pre-order a room first.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/tempest-freerunning-academy-features-mario-tribute/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tempest Freerunning Academy features Mario tribute</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/tempest-freerunning-academy-features-mario-tribute/">Tempest Freerunning Academy features Mario tribute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 14:30:00 EST. Attendees of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sxsw-2011/">SXSW</a> were privy to a trailer promising a more dramatic version of the tale of the brothers Mario. Now said trailer is online for all to see and we'd be remiss not to bring it to your attention. Joe Nicolosi's take on the Mushroom Kingdom is not only irresistible, it's pretty hilarious -- oh, and <strong>NSFW</strong>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/the-super-mario-bros-movie-that-should-have-been/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Super Mario Bros. movie that should have been</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/the-super-mario-bros-movie-that-should-have-been/">The Super Mario Bros. movie that should have been</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 00:10:00 EST. No, seriously, watch the video past the break and you'll agree with us. It took YouTube user Shuey187 <em>over 90 minutes</em> -- and, sadly, he never finished the hat.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/building-mario-in-tetris-is-tougher-than-you-may-think/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Building Mario in Tetris is tougher than you may think</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/building-mario-in-tetris-is-tougher-than-you-may-think/">Building Mario in Tetris is tougher than you may think</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 02:00:00 EST. Just in case the very existence of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> wasn't enough to convince you that there would eventually be a traditional <em>Super Mario</em> game for it, Nintendo has made it official. In the company's latest <a href="http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/mario25th/vol5_page7.jsp">Iwata Asks</a> feature, <em>Mario</em> maestro Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that a new <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> game is indeed underway for 3DS -- that's in addition to the upcoming iterations of <em>Mario Kart</em> and <em>Paper Mario</em> for the new handhled. "In the interests of adopting new technology for the <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> tradition, I am now making a new <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. game for the Nintendo 3DS system," Miyamoto revealed.<br />
<br />
"I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS," he added. We're going to go out on a limb and guess the new game will involve Mario and a daring royal rescue.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/3ds-super-mario-bros-confirmed-by-miyamoto/">3DS Super Mario Bros. confirmed by Miyamoto</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 18:35:00 EST. According to a <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/jonmchu/status/26408114655858688">tweet from director John Chu</a>, Nintendo prohibited a 15-second clip of the <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> theme song from being used in an upcoming film adaptation of pop prince Justin Bieber's life, <strike><em>Crank 3</em></strike> <em>Never Say Never</em>. Chu seemed frustrated, but we understand why a company like Nintendo has to be so careful about how its flagship property is used. Also, our condolences to Justin Bieber, whom Nintendo apparently ranks just slightly below <a href="http://www.videogamemm.com/thehorde/main.php?g2_itemId=10569">shampoo</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6jMwrXm3lo">cereal</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XXXZYW?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=streitseemlikeag&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000XXXZYW">slippers</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Super-Mario-Pull-String-Pinata-Supplies/dp/B001TD3Q3U/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1295630819&amp;sr=1-6">pi&ntilde;atas</a>, and, of course, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtMZKYnLg5c"><em>this</em></a>. Sleep well, buddy.<br />
<br />
Hey, maybe Chu should have just used it without asking. ... <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NsiouaBhBk">What's that, Captain Lou?</a> ... Usually, we balk at fan-made creations that take innocent, classic game characters and put them in <em>mature</em> scenarios. That's not the case with this <em>GTA IV</em> machinima, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk9oa_PiXAk"><em>The Brothers Mario</em></a> -- not because it's especially hilarious, mind you, but because it's actually, <em>unbelievably</em> <em>badass</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/the-brothers-mario-machinima-brings-the-mushroom-kingdom-to-li/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'The Brothers Mario' machinima brings the Mushroom Kingdom to Liberty City</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/the-brothers-mario-machinima-brings-the-mushroom-kingdom-to-li/">'The Brothers Mario' machinima brings the Mushroom Kingdom to Liberty City</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 12:40:00 EST. With the launch of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-collection-special-pack">25th Anniversary edition</a> of <em>Super Mario All-Stars </em>for Wii drawing near (this Sunday!), you may be seriously tempted to buy all those classic <em>Mario</em> games again for, like -- what? The fourth time? Think again! Not only is the "Limited Edition" Wii game a veritable <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQteZTifV5Y">ROM dump</a> of the SNES <em>All-Stars</em> (which features graphically and musically enhanced versions of the NES games, by 16-bit standards), it's also missing a lot of the <em>great</em> "glitches" from the original games.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/SuperMarioBros.html">TASVideos</a> has assembled a comprehensive guide to the elite tricks and tactics from the original <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> games -- with pictures! <em>Animated pictures</em>. It serves as a stark reminder to us purists why there's really no substitute for the originals, even when said substitute comes in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/06/super-mario-all-stars-u-s-box-art-revealed-iwata-asks-talks-mu/">nifty box</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/super-mario-bros-tricks-explained-with-animated-gifs/">Super Mario Bros. tricks explained with animated GIFs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 04:00:00 EST. <br />
The 144-page <em>page-turner</em> includes a retrospective interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, a collection of Mario manga, stickers and a poster, and a CD of orchestrated Mario music from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Start_-Symphony_of_Games-">Press Start Symphony of Games</a> concert series. YouTube user Yankeyan recently <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CTJL5lUjHg">showed off</a> one of the cleverest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect-hacks">Kinect hacks</a> we've seen to date: He's managed to use the motion-sensing gadget to control <em>Super Mario Bros.</em><em> 1 - 3</em> on an NES emulator. Well, he <em>kind</em> of controls it. We've never seen anyone work so hard to grab that first mushroom before.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/28/kinect-hacked-into-super-mario-bros-emulator-controller/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kinect hacked into Super Mario Bros. emulator controller</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/28/kinect-hacked-into-super-mario-bros-emulator-controller/">Kinect hacked into Super Mario Bros. emulator controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 19:30:00 EST. If you happened to be visiting the new neighborhood of Arcosur, located in Zaragoza, Spain, this past weekend, you would have played witness to a truly ... unique sight. This past Saturday, one of the first streets in the still-under-construction suburb received a moniker: <a href="http://www.viciojuegos.com/noticia/Asistimos-a-la-inauguracion-de-la-estatua-de-Mario-en-Zaragoza/25273">Avenida de Super Mario Bros.</a>, which, as the Spanish-speakers and context clue-users among you probably figured out, translates to Super Mario Bros. Avenue.<br />
<br />
Present at the unveiling was the titular plumber himself, as well as the neighborhood's new residents, who sported fake black mustaches in solidarity. The name was chosen by said residents in an online poll -- and it isn't the only gaming-themed name which won out. Future boulevards in the community will be named after <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, <em>Space Invaders</em> and <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>. This is all very cool -- but we're still holding out hope for an <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleyway">Alleyway</a></em> Alleyway. Is it too late for a write-in ballot?<br />

Listen, if you're a dyed-in-the-wool Wii owner who hasn't already purchased the entire <em>Super Mario</em> catalog on Virtual Console, you're probably going to pick up the 25th Anniversary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-collection-special-pack"><em>Super Mario All-Stars </em>Limited Edition</a> package. Nintendo recently revealed exactly what the game you'll be hunting for is going to look like, posting the game's <a href="http://twitpic.com/33v2va">official U.S. box art</a> on the company's Twitter feed.<br />
<br />
Also, the latest installment in the <a href="http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/super-mario-all-stars/vol1_page1.jsp">Iwata Asks</a> saga sees the president pressing a few Nintendo EAD composers about the music which will come in the bundle's soundtrack CD. Give it a read, if you're interested in the history of the franchise's timeless accompaniment -- just don't get surly with us if you get "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXKS7_vLUGg">Slider</a>" stuck in your head for like, a month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/06/super-mario-all-stars-u-s-box-art-revealed-iwata-asks-talks-mu/">Super Mario All-Stars U.S. box art revealed, Iwata Asks talks music</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 06 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. On December 12, the <em>Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition</em> will be released in North America, with the same contents as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/super-mario-all-stars-25th-anniversary-hits-europe-on-dec-3/">European</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/super-mario-collection-announced-for-wii-in-japan/">Japanese</a> releases: the game on a Wii disc, a Super Mario History CD with tracks from classic and modern Marios, and a 32-page <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/25/super-mario-used-to-pack-a-beam-gun/">Super Mario History booklet</a>.<br />
<br />
Nintendo says that sales will continue "while supplies last," which makes it sound like there will be only one run of the <em>All-Stars</em> collection. Considering the bonuses, that $30 price actually compares pretty favorably to buying <em>All-Stars</em> on <a href="http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&amp;_nkw=super+mario+all-stars&amp;_sacat=See-All-Categories">eBay</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/super-mario-all-stars-limited-edition-hits-north-america-on-dec/">Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition hits North America on Dec. 12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 09:32:00 EST. OK, so our jealousy of Japan and Europe and their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/super-mario-all-stars-25th-anniversary-hits-europe-on-dec-3/"><em>Super Mario Bros.</em> collectors editions</a> has become utterly crushing. <a href="http://n-styles.com/main/archives/2010/10/22-184555.php">N-Styles </a>provides the proverbial camel-back-breaking straw with some original design docs included in the package's history book.<br />
<br />
Not only are they so totally gorgeous that we want to lay them out on a bed and go full <em>Indecent Proposal</em>, but <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/10/25/mario_original_control_scheme/">Andriasang</a>'s translation shows they're full of interesting tidbits like the fact that Mario was <em>originally supposed to have a beam gun</em>. <br />
<br />
Boy, fireballs seem pretty tame now that we know how close we got to ... Mario Chief? Master Plumber? ... Sorry, give us a second, we'll come up with something.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/25/super-mario-used-to-pack-a-beam-gun/">Super Mario used to pack a beam gun</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 16:30:00 EST. To commemorate the occasion, Famitsu spoke to a group of prominent developers about the impact Shigeru Miyamoto's masterpiece had on them and the industry.<br />
<br />
"The reason I entered the industry," Capcom's Keiji Inafune said, "was because I encountered Mario and learned how interesting games can be. Thank you, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto." <em>Super Monkey Ball</em> and <em>Yakuza</em> creator Toshihiro Nagoshi expressed a similar sentiment, saying "It's the game that made me enter the game industry." Bethesda's Todd Howard said that <em>Super Mario Bros</em>. was the beginning of "the genre where the hero always follows the correct path." <br />
<br />
Our favorite quote is from <em>Dragon Quest</em> creator Yuji Horii. "Also, I can't say much," he said, "but there was also 'Kintamario.'" <br />
The newest items in the Club Nintendo shop are these four commemorative Mario pins, each shipping in early November for a steep 450 Coins -- which means you can go ahead and forget about collecting them all. On the other end of the price scale is a new Mario screensaver, featuring footage from games throughout the series, which you can download for 10 Coins. Compared to the pins, it's a bargain! But it's also a screensaver.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/20/club-nintendo-celebrates-super-mario-bros-25th-anniversary/">Club Nintendo celebrates Super Mario Bros.' 25th anniversary -- with pins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 16:40:00 EST. Today, the special edition <em>Super Mario Bros. </em>25th Anniversary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/mario-dsi-xl-and-dsi-temporarily-make-us-forget-the-3ds/">DSi XL</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/red-wii-with-special-super-mario-bros-coming-to-japan/">Wii</a> systems have been announced for the region as well, with each red system bundled with a <em>Mario</em> game.<br />
<br />
The red Wii set, in stores October 29, includes <em>Wii Sports</em> and <em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em>. However, instead of the special version of <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> packed with the Japanese system, the European version includes the "original" <em>Donkey Kong</em>. This is probably just the NES game on Virtual Console, but the "original" terminology suggests it <em>could</em> be the arcade game. The red DSi XL bundle includes a copy of <em>New Super Mario Bros</em>. and will be out October 22.<br />
<br />
<em>None</em> of this has been announced in North America. Happy birthday, Mario!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/super-mario-wii-and-dsi-xl-systems-coming-to-europe/">Super Mario Wii and DSi XL systems coming to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 14:45:00 EST. Nintendo of Europe announced plans today to release <em>Super Mario All-Stars: 25th Anniversary</em> in the region, in a deluxe package similar to the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/super-mario-collection-announced-for-wii-in-japan/">Super Mario Collection</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/super-mario-collection-announced-for-wii-in-japan/"> Special Pack</a> coming out in Japan this month.<br />
<br />
The new Wii package includes <em>Super Mario All-Stars</em> (SNES versions of <em>Super Mario Bros. 1-3</em> and <em>The Lost Levels</em>), a history booklet, and a CD with selections from throughout the series, through <em>Super Mario Galaxy 2</em>.<br />
<br />
With all the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/mario-dsi-xl-and-dsi-temporarily-make-us-forget-the-3ds/">special edition</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/red-wii-with-special-super-mario-bros-coming-to-japan/">items</a> in Japan and this in Europe, we in North America feel left out of the festivities. We're checking with Nintendo of America about potential release plans for the collection here.<br />

Nintendo has revealed an image of the system (above), along with a surprise: a <a href="http://www.7netshopping.jp/all/static/mario25.html">25th Anniversary DSi</a>, also in red, and also with Mario graphics. That's going to make choosing<em> even more difficult</em>.<br />
<br />
The DSi LL will be available in Japan on October 28 for 18,000 yen ($215). The DSi, featuring an adorable little Mario jumping over the camera, will be available the same day for 14,800 yen ($177) -- but only from 7-Eleven and its online shop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/mario-dsi-xl-and-dsi-temporarily-make-us-forget-the-3ds/">Mario DSi XL and DSi temporarily make us forget the 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 14:40:00 EST. As part of Nintendo's ongoing celebration of <em>Mario's</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/08/nintendo-trademarks-super-mario-anniversary-logo/">25th anniversary</a>, the latest edition of <a href="http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/mario25th/vol1_page1.jsp">Iwata Asks</a> is a lengthy conversation between Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and guest host Shigesato Itoi, creator of <em>Earthbound</em>. In the interview, Miyamoto suggested that making <em>Mario</em> games has been "easy," thanks to ever-evolving technology.<br />
<br />
"What's been easy about making the <em>Mario</em> games is that they could naturally change along with the progress of technology," Miyamoto observed. "For example, when you make live action SFX movies and as special effects technology advances, then you have new methods at your disposal."<br />
<br />
Adapting to new technologies has been key to <em>Mario's</em> longevity, Miyamoto explained. "In the same way, as technology advances, the <em>Mario</em> games change, too [...] And as technology changes, so does what you want to do. If it weren't for that, I don't think I could have stuck with it this far." Because the <em>Mario</em> franchise is meant to change with technology, there hasn't ever been a "roadmap" for the series. Instead, the impromptu schedule of <em>Mario</em> games has fueled its creative stamina. "The games turn out more fun that way than if you planned everything out on paper," Miyamoto added.<br />
<br />
Although Miyamoto has been working with Nintendo and the <em>Mario</em> series for the past 25 years, it seems the famed designer isn't ready to quit any time soon. When quizzed about his position 25 years from now (when he's 85!), Miyamoto admitted that "I'll probably be working on something." Of course, there's a caveat: "If I'm still alive then."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/24/miyamoto-explains-why-its-easy-to-make-a-mario-game/">Miyamoto explains why it's 'easy' to make a Mario game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 18:20:00 EST. The 25th anniversary of <em>Super Mario Bros</em>' NES debut is only <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros">a week away</a>. To celebrate, Nintendo of Japan has trademarked a new ... logo. <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2010/09/06/nintendo-gives-mario-a-special-logo-for-his-25th-anniversary/">Siliconera</a> speculates that the logo will be appended to the upcoming Japanese re-release of <em>Mario All-Stars</em> (known as <em>Super Mario Collection</em>). But, why go through the effort of trademarking a logo for a single product? Presumably, the company will want to use this logo on all <em>Mario</em> games in the coming year.<br />
<br />
While Mario's 25th anniversary should warrant a far more festive attitude from Nintendo, it doesn't seem like Mario actually needs the added attention. Unlike most other gaming mascots, Mario's popularity hasn't waned in the 25 years since the NES game -- a testament to how beloved an icon he truly is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/08/nintendo-trademarks-super-mario-anniversary-logo/">Nintendo trademarks Super Mario anniversary logo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 22:00:00 EST.
