Remember when that little game nobody paid any attention to called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Smash-Bros-Brawl/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> came out ... it was last month, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/09/joystiq-live-ish-at-the-u-of-illinois-ssbb-midnight-launch/">remember</a>? Well, GameStop helped promote the indie title by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/gamestops-smash-bros-brawl-tournament-and-midnight-launch-even/">holding a tournament</a> to support the game's fanbase and raise awareness. According to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamestop">GameStop</a>, the tournament had over 75,000 players and, following a couple semi-final rounds across the country, culminated last weekend in San Jose with Lee Martin of Houma, Lousiana, emerging victorious.<br /><br />Martin (pictured above, he's the skinny one) walked away with a 37" LCD-TV, the entire Nintendo Wii software library, a Wii console, selected accessories and $5,000 in cash. Martin brawled against 60 other opponents at the store, district and regional levels on his way to winning the championship. No word yet which fat man pictured Martin got to take home as a trophy for winning.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamestop-smash-bros-brawl-tournament/">GameStop Smash Bros. <p><em>Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em><br /></p>
<p>Custom level creation in console games has come a long way. It used to be, if you wanted to share a track that you built in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ExciteBike">Excitebike</a></em>, you had to invite friends over to play your creation on your cartridge, until you powered off your NES and the track was lost forever. Nowadays our levels can be saved to internal storage, and shared by removable media, or across the internet to survive for posterity.<br /></p>
<p>It's a feature that's fully supported by all consoles this generation, and big games are highlighting it amongst their bullet points. System sellers like <em><a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/video-halo-3-forge-demonstration/" target="_blank">Halo 3</a></em>, <em><a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/09/24/littlebigplanet-analyzed-as-system-mover-weak-vs-fire/" target="_blank">LittleBigPlanet</a></em>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> are trojan-horsing the concept of custom level creation into the consciousness of the console-consuming collective. Former Sony exec <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/philharrison" target="_blank">Phil Harrison</a> popularized the term "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/07/joystiq-and-engadget-live-at-sonys-2007-gdc-keynote/" target="_blank">Game 3.0</a>," but we'll be taking a look at how it is playing out on Nintendo's platform.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/revolutionary-playing-creating-sharing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: Playing. Stop walking the streets and asking total strangers if they want to trade <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Smash-Bros-Brawl/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> friend codes. Come inside, pull up a chair, and let us serve you with fresh, safe (and hopefully clean) codes all in one spot. Please consider this the place for the Joystiq community to drop their <em>Brawl</em> digits. A couple quick ground rules:<br />
<ul>
    <li>All that's required is the <em>Brawl</em> code and not your Wii digits. Please don't post your Wii code.<br /></li>
    <li>This post is only for <em>Brawl</em> codes.</li>
    <li><em>This post is only for Brawl codes, seriously!</em></li>
</ul>

GameStop announced today that it will hold <span style="font-style: italic;">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</span> <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ssbb/tournament/default.asp">tournaments and midnight launches</a> this Saturday at 2,500 of its stores. The single-elimination tournaments will begin at 10PM (local time), but contestants are asked to check with their store for exact time and must be there 30 minutes before the event.<br /><br />Winners of the local <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamestop">GameStop</a> store <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Smash-Bros-Brawl/"><span style="font-style: italic;">SSBB</span></a> tournaments will continue up a chain, with a few more qualifying rounds, leading to the finals on April 12 in San Jose, CA. The last brawler standing will receive an LCD-TV (that's what the release says, but the flyer after the break says plasma), a Wii console plus accessories, "an entire Nintendo Wii Software Library" and $5,000 in cash. The second and third place finishers will receive a gift card, and will likely be asked if they'd like to pre-order any games.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/gamestops-smash-bros-brawl-tournament-and-midnight-launch-even/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GameStop holding Smash Bros. Nintendo of America's official <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> Tournament finals occur this Saturday in New York City after qualifying events last month in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. This past Saturday an official qualifying event was held in the city of Worcester, Massachusetts, a well-sized burg about an hour outside of Boston. And although Worcester does have its own distinct identity, don't tell that to the emcee of the Nintendo <em>Brawl</em> event who kept telling "Boston" to "make some noise." For those who need further explanation, that would be like attending an event in Newark, New Jersey and having someone awkwardly scream, "Manhattan, make some noise!"<br /><br />So, how did such a must-attend event for gamers to get their hands on <em>Brawl</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-us-until-march-9/">a week before launch</a> end up being hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute? Turns out, it's a classic tale of who you know. Jaime Barriga, a senior at WPI who heads the Game Development Club, won a photo contest Nintendo held last year. Since that time he stayed in contact with the Nintendo PR team and kept trying to get some kind of event hosted at the school. And so the total number of Japanese people that we <em>utterly despise</em> rises to 1 million. Actually, it's 1.08 million, which is the number of <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> discs that have been sold since the game's launch on January 31st. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUST27165520080212?rpc=401">Reuters</a> reminds us that it took <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/WiiFit/">Wii Fit</a></em> seven weeks to accomplish a similar <strike>feet</strike> feat, with even <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/WiiSports/">Wii Sports</a></em> (sold separately in Japan) dallying for 11 weeks before crossing the 1 million mark. <br /><br />There aren't many weeks left between us and the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-us-until-march-9/">American debut</a>, but by then it'll be our turn to become targets for an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/nintendo-teases-pal-regions-with-brawl-release-date/">entire continent's hatred and jealousy</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/smash-bros-brawl-sales-exceed-1-million-in-japan/">Smash Bros. Japan is poised to suffer significant <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-smash-bros-brawl/" target="_blank"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> shortages when the game is officially released on Thursday, reports <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/01/nintendo-drasti.html" target="_blank">Game|Life</a>. Nintendo has failed to supply as much as 75% of pre-order units to retailers; likely due to production delays and oversights. Though the shortage would seem to pale in comparison to Wii hardware scarcity, a meager <em>Brawl </em>launch would underscore Nintendo's continued struggle to operate a functional supply chain.<br /><br />Game|Life theorizes that Japan's expected shortages explain <em>Brawl's</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-us-until-march-9/" target="_blank">delay</a> in North America, as it will take until March for Nintendo to manufacture an ample shipment of units for the territory - not to mention, fulfill the rest of Japan's demand. Others speculate that Nintendo is intentionally withholding supply to give its WiFi Connection service a chance to adapt to the inescapable surge of online <em>Brawl</em> players. This isn't the first time Nintendo has been <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/27/wii-shortage-is-intentional-according-to-gamestop/">accused</a> of such tactics, and - <em>if someone don't fix that damn supply chain</em> - it won't be the last.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/smash-bros-brawl-shortages-imminent/">Smash Bros. Wal-Mart wants to apologize with a $10 electronic gift card to those who acted on the long-shot dream of purchasing <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/wal-mart-offers-20-smash-bros-brawl-pre-orders/">$19.82 last week due to an error last week</a>. Wal-Mart shoppers who had their orders canceled by the corporate overlords have now made $10 out of deal, which can be put toward purchasing <em>Brawl</em> for $39.82 from Walmart.com. <em>Brawl</em> buyers who jumped at the error deal, keep an eye on your email, Uncle Wally's sending you a $10 gift card soon.<br /><br />[Thanks to all who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/wal-mart-gives-10-gift-card-to-victims-opportunists-of-brawl/">Wal-Mart gives $10 gift card to victims (opportunists) of Brawl price error</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jan 2008 23:40:00 EST. Brawl</em>,</a> we fear that the effect may have been something akin to Chinese water torture for the staff. A few of us (who shall remain unnamed) have taken to cosplaying different characters from the game, either by wearing elaborate character costumes, or, in some of the more desperate cases, just shouting their names repeatedly.<br /><br />The worst part is that some of our now mentally unstable staff can't even remember what fighters are in the game anymore. We're sure that we've seen a Wu-Tang Clan costume or two, and at least one of our staff has taken to dressing as Chun Li. Thankfully, GameTrailers has put together this video profiling some of the new fighters from the game to help us keep them straight. It pulled us back from the edge, we hope it does the same for you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/video-introduces-the-new-smash-bros-brawl-fighters/">Video introduces the new Smash Bros. [Original headline: "Wal-Mart offers $20 Smash Bros. Brawl pre-orders"]<br /><br />We know, we know. <a href="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6527131">This</a> Wal-Mart listing for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Super%20Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em> pre-orders at the bargain price of $19.82 is almost certainly a technical error. But, if you're going to buy the game anyway, we figure there can't be any harm in putting your name and two sawbucks down. Worse case scenario, your order gets canceled. Best case: You save $30.<br /><br />That said, there is yet a third possibility that's downright <em>mind-blowing.</em> What if this is the actual price? Can you imagine how that would (continue) to move systems? Can you imagine what a sales juggernaut that would be? Sure, the Wii may not need the extra help, but come on, let us have our fantasy until reality brings it crashing down around us, OK?<br /><br />Update 1: <a target="_blank" href="http://slickdeals.net/?permadeal=11334#direct_deal_11334">Looks like</a> Wal-Mart is running a major pre-order sale, which also includes reduced prices for upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 titles.<br /><br />Update 2: <em>Super Smash Bros.</em> pre-order price has been changed to $49.82.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.maklink.com/">Dalibor</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/wal-mart-offers-20-smash-bros-brawl-pre-orders/">Wal-Mart 'ends' $20 Smash Bros. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Smash%20Bros.%20Melee">Smash Bros. Melee</a></em>'s Multi-Man mode, which pitted you against tons of wire frame models was a great way to take out your aggressions, especially if a wire frame model had just beaten you out for the big promotion or the WF Gang was picking on you in school. <em></em><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl">Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em>'s take on the lengthy battle mode looks to be even more satisfying though, with wire frames replaced by the the much more substantial-sounding Fighting Alloy Team.<br /><br />More exciting is the revelation that a buddy will be able to join you in your campaign against the colorful robots from all the way across the country with online co-op. There's also just regular old two-player, for all the <em>Smash Bros. </em>fanatics' real life friends ... Hey, if you don't use a mode long enough, do you think it will actually get dusty?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/smash-bros-brawls-multi-man-gets-online-co-op/">Smash Bros. Since 'June 2008 or beyond' didn't exactly resonate with European Wii owners, Nintendo has quickly, albeit indirectly revised its update on the European release of <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em>. In a statement responding to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/06/smash-bros-brawl-not-expected-in-europe-until-q3-08/" target="_blank">yesterday's concerns</a> about <em>Brawl</em> missing from a tentative Q1/Q2 release list, Nintendo has said: "All Nintendo software titles launching in Q2 2008 have not been finalized or confirmed to date. Nintendo will communicate on all software titles launching in Q2 2008 for Wii and Nintendo DS at a later date" -- oh, except for <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>, that one's definitely coming Q2.<br /><br />Nintendo can dangle <em>Mario Kart</em> in our faces all its wants, but that won't change the fact that its stance on <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SuperSmashBrosBrawl/"><em>Brawl</em></a> in Europe remains as vague as ever. Europe's used to waiting, so c'mon Nintendo, either end it with a swift kick to the dome or just lay the bad news on us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/smash-bros-brawl-dated-for-europe-at-a-later-date/">Smash Bros. Nintendo hates Europe: <em>Confirmed</em>? It's not the steadfast and ever-lingering sort of hate, but rather that insidious aura which prompts someone to suffocate you with a pillow as soon as you're comfortable enough to share a bed with them. After all, our gaming pals in Europe didn't have to endure <em>entirely</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/06/elite-beat-agents-rocks-up-in-europe-july-13th/">ridiculous</a> waits for <em>Metroid Prime 3</em> or <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>, and managed to enjoy both excellent titles while they were still fresh in the memories of those on more privileged continents. Even next year's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MarioKartWii/">Mario Kart Wii</a></em> got a spot on Nintendo's latest second quarter release list.<br /><br />Cross-over cartoon violence spectacular, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Super%20Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em>, was sadly omitted from said list, prompting <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/06-12-2007-7051.html">Videogamer.com</a> to politely ask Nintendo when Europe could expect its arrival. "If the game is not listed on the schedule up until the end of Q2 it is currently not due out until after that time," came the bloodcurdling answer. That places <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> in June at earliest, roughly four months after the game's American release in February. We hope this is nothing more than a precaution (would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/nintendos-perrin-kaplan-talks-smash-bros-brawl-delay/">another delay</a> surprise anybody?), as we simply cannot comprehend this level of cruelty being inflicted upon Europe intentionally -- and we watch the Royal Variety Performance <em>every year</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/06/smash-bros-brawl-not-expected-in-europe-until-q3-08/">Smash Bros. <br />We've known about <em>Brawl</em>'s online mode for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/dojo-update-super-smash-bros-brawl-online-multiplayer-confirme/">a while</a> now, but today's dojo update takes a closer look at the nuts and bolts of how it all works when playing with friends (you may recall that you can play with non-friends, but their name won't be visible). And boy, does it look <em>simple</em>.<br /><br />The first thing you'll need to do, as you'd expect, is swap Friend Codes. Yes, they're a royal pain in everybody's backside, but let's face facts: due to Nintendo's "safety first" approach, they're here to stay. Once Friend Codes have been entered into your Wii, they stay there forever, allowing you to view the status of your <em>Brawl</em> buddies. From there, if you fancy some fisticuffs, it's simply a matter of somebody hosting the game, and the rest of your pals piling in. Piece of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cake/">cake</a>, eh?<br /><br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/03/dojo-update-friends-list/">Dojo update: Friends List</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 14:15:00 EST. <br />No doubt about it: the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/dojo-update-assist-trophies/">Assist Trophies</a> announced thus far for <em>Brawl </em>have pretty much rocked. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/dojo-update-andross-and-special-moves-breakdown/">Andross</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/dojo-update-little-mac/">Little Mac</a>, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/assist01_070702e.jpg">Nintendog</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/dojo-update-gray-fox-enters-the-fray/">Gray Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/dojo-update-get-excited-for-excitebike/">Excitebikers</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/assist02_070702b-l.jpg">Samurai Goroh</a>, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/assist01_070702d.jpg">Hammer Brother</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/dojo-update-dont-turn-the-game-off-without-saving/">Mr. Resetti</a>; the sheer <span style="font-style: italic;">randomness </span>of this list delights us, and when it comes to unleashing some Assist Trophy hurt on our opponents, we probably won't know where to start.<br /><br />Today's dojo update has only exacerbated our dilemma. See, it's not so much that we <em>really like</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/treasure/">Treasure</a>'s <em>exquisite </em>N64 game <em>Sin and Punishment</em> (available on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/vc-monday-madness-lost-levels-and-sin-and-punishment/">Virtual Console</a> now, as if we needed to remind you). It's more that we unconditionally <em>love </em>it, want to marry it, have its children, and settle down in the 'burbs with it for a life of rosy contentment.<br /><br />Hence, the news that the star of that game, Saki Amamiya, will be an Assist Trophy in <span style="font-style: italic;">Brawl </span>has put us in a right old tizzy. He sounds pretty useful, as well, with his Cannon Sword doubling up as both a sword and a gun, allowing him to slice and shoot his way through whoever's silly enough to get in his way.<br /><br />
<br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/dojo-update-saki-amamiya-to-dole-out-punishment-for-your-sins/">Dojo update: Saki Amamiya to dole out punishment for your sins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 16:30:00 EST. <br />Being able to switch the color of your fighter is pretty much a given in any <em>Smash Bros.</em> game, and <em>Brawl </em>uses this feature to give us the likes of Fire Mario, Mario as Wario, an albino <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/dojo-update-donkey-kong-and-a-trailer/">Donkey Kong</a>, Dark Link, Fusion Suit <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samus">Samus</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/21/dojo-update-snaaaaaaaaaaaaaake/">Snake</a> in a variety of fetching camouflage designs. <br /><br />Each character comes with six different variations, which can be toggled on the character select screen. Today's dojo update is a "2-for-1" deal, giving us insight into a new game mode and in-game item. First, the new game mode allows players to set up scenarios for training purposes. As you can see above, you control everything right down to the flow of time, allowing you to perfect your craft before stepping into the field of combat with actual opponents. Considering how long it's been since we've played a <em>Smash Bros. </em>game, we're probably going to need this.<br /><br />The new in-game item is the Smart Bomb, which can be used to destroy <em>everyone</em>. Upon launching the item at your opponent, it will detonate and the explosion will steadily grow. As it expands, it traps other combatants into it. But, you have to watch out, because it can also trap you in.<br /><br />
<br /><br /><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/various13.html">Read</a> - Training Mode<br /><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/items/item12.html">Read</a> - Smart Bomb<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/dojo-update-smart-bomb-and-training-mode/">Dojo update: Smart Bomb and Training Mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. When Solid Snake brings his gravelly verbosity to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Super%20Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em>, it seems he won't be the only <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> character doing battle with Mario and Sonic. The game's official blog <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/items/assist/assist11.html">revealed today</a> that the OCN (Original Cyborg Ninja) "Gray Fox" will be appearing in the game as an assist trophy.<br /><br />While we're disappointed he's not playable, we love the way his contribution is described on the blog, which could go down in history as the most straight-forward ninja explanation ever: "He approaches stealthily with lithe jumps, coming right in then slicing repeatedly." ... Yep, that sounds about right.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/gray-fox-ninjas-his-way-into-super-smash-bros-brawl/">Gray Fox ninjas his way into Super Smash Bros. <div align="left">Did you hear that sound? If we're not mistaken (and we only occasionally are), that was the sound of millions of fanboy heads exploding as they learned that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Super%20Smash%20Bros.%20Brawl">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em> includes a level editor. It looks fairly flexible too, allowing you to place objects and choose their size, look, etc. You can even select your own music.<br /><br />One-upping itself once again, <em>SSBB</em> is going to let you share those custom maps, and your friends won't be the only ones seeing your work (though that is an option). You can also send your maps to Nintendo, who will then select one map <em>daily</em> to send out to all players. That's right: You'll not only have a chance at map stardom, you'll be receiving a daily infusion of new content.<br /><br />Be honest with us: Would a valentine to Nintendo be too creepy?<br /><br />[Thanks everyone who sent this in.]</div>

Signs point to "not very likely." Judging by some of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/emptyslots.jpg">empty rows of gaming stations</a> we saw, and the fact that it doesn't fill the South Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center, it's hard to imagine this show being a giant success.<br /><br />In fact, since it's held in the exact same place that E3 used to be, it's impossible not to compare it to the other shows. In fact it sort of feels like E3 reborn, except that they forgot to send out invites and let people know about it. There were a few busy areas, like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/konami.jpg">Konami booth</a> which had a line of people all day long waiting to play the <em>MGS4</em> demo (which was sweet, more on that later), and the Nintendo booth had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/bleachers.jpg">bleachers</a> set up where people patiently waited to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446784/">get their hand on Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a>, which was also sweet. If by sweet you mean button-mashy, which we do.<br /><br />Also popular was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/crossbow.jpg"><em>Link's Crossbow Training</em></a>, which we'll be playing tomorrow, and of course, <em>Guitar Hero 3</em>. We also witnessed several people <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/overheard-e3-you-pulled-a-peter-moore/">pulling Peter Moore's</a> at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446786/">Rock Band trailer</a>, which was an extremely cool setup ... but sort of sparsely attended. Probably due to the fact that no one really wants to hear perfect strangers butchering The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go."<br /><br />While there's not a ton of material out there that hasn't already hit the shelves, we did have fun playing around at the EA booth (we still love you, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/445856/">The Orange Box</a>), and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446275/">Civiization: Revolution</a> is a lot of fun, which we'll be telling you more about soon. For now, the obligatory <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446564/">Guitar Hero III stations</a>, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446786/">elaborate Rock Band stages</a>, the ubiquitous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/446856/">cosplay</a> shots and an overdose of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/445853/">Fatal1ty</a> await you in the gallery.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/">E for All 2007</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/#451129"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dsc_0108_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/#451125"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dsc_0112_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/#451124"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dsc_0015_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/#451121"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dsc_0017_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e-for-all-2007/#451120"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/dsc_0171_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/joystiq-at-e-for-all-2007/">Joystiq at E For All 2007</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 09:30:00 EST. <div align="left">The green gloves, the at-the-ready stance, that uppercut ... it can't be! It is! It's Little Mac, the boxer that (ocassionaly) beat Mike Tyson in <em>Punch-Out</em>, set to appear in <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em>! The only way we could be more excited is if he was a playable character. Yeah, you read that right. Apparently, much like Rocky Balboa, the past-his-prime sweet scientist can only handle brief bouts before risking his health.<br /><br />OK, so maybe he's only going to be an Assist Trophy more than an actual fighter, but it's hard for us to not get a little excited (read: teary-eyed and nostalgic) about seeing Little Mac digitized for a new generation to enjoy. As it says on the official Smash Bros. blog: "Resurrecting this legend for the current generation is something we can all enjoy just a bit." We couldn't agree more.<br /></div>

The good news about <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em>: pretty much <em>everything</em>. The bad news? Looks like the title is being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/the-smash-bros-megaton-that-is-a-surprise-to-nobody-sonic-conf/">delayed in Japan</a> until the end of January. So here's our question: will that delay be spread across the globe, or will it be unique to Japan? We hope it won't be delayed, of course ... unless there are things what need fixing, and then we're 100% in favor of a delay. Please, give us the best game ever. We'll wait. We'll even pretend to be patient.<br /><strong><br />Update: </strong>The delay has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/confirmed-smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-u-s/">confirmed</a>. Get your weep on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/wii-warm-up-will-non-japanese-gamers-see-a-ssbb-delay/">Wii Warm Up: Will non-Japanese gamers see a SSBB delay? Word just hit today, however, that playable versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/dojo-update-tourney-game-mode-revealed/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/04/super-menu-galaxy/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> will be on-hand for those in attendance. Nintendo, who wasn't showing their face at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tgs07">TGS07</a>, didn't even have a playable build of <em>Brawl</em> on the show floor at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e307">E307</a>. Even with the game only a few months away, it'd be nice to get a taste of the action. Perhaps even get to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/21/dojo-update-snaaaaaaaaaaaaaake/">play as one</a> of the new characters. Not only that, but Nintendo will host daily tournaments, hooking each day's winner up with an exclusive Wii T-shirt.<br /><br />Head past the break for all of the Wii games on-hand at the show.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/brawl-and-galaxy-at-nintendos-e-for-all-booth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Brawl and Galaxy at Nintendo's E For All booth</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/brawl-and-galaxy-at-nintendos-e-for-all-booth/">Brawl and Galaxy at Nintendo's E For All booth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 23:08:00 EST. Now, it seems that subspace is not quite as lonely as we thought, as the game's official blog has revealed that The Subspace Emissary will feature co-op play.<br /><br />It's structured for one player to be lead and for another to be his wingman, his Goose, if you will. The Don Quixote of the duo will lead the movement, and Sancho Panza will have to stay in the boss' screen. There are a few other details about TSE there too, so if you're interested, it's well worth a read.<br /><br />[Thanks, Ryan]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/super-smas-bros-brawl-features-co-op/">Super Smash Bros. Wouldn't you have loved to have been there on <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> audition day?<br /><br />"Hi, my name is Lucas, but you may know me from <em>Mother 3</em>."<br />"So, no one in America has any clue who you are, right?"<br />"Umm, yes. That is technically correct. Yeah."<br />"Do you have any special powers?"<br />"Well, I look kind of like Dennis the Menace."<br />"You're hired!"<br /><br />For our part, we're forever going to pretend that newly announced brawler Lucas from <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl </em>is actually Power Glove and radical haircut sporter, Lucas Barton from <em>The Wizard.</em> In the biz, that's known as an <em>upgrade.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/smash-bros-brawl-adds-mother-3s-lucas/">Smash Bros. Otherwise, you'll do a lot worse than shoot your eye out. Lesson: slow and steady wins the shooting race.<br /><br />In case you hadn't guessed, it's Diddy Kong all the way today, and the Dojo has offered up a look at his special moves, which include eating the occasional peanut from his gun. Hey, peanuts are nutritious <em>and</em> delicious! Also, they restore a little health, which is generally a good thing when getting your smash on. <br /><br />If peanut guns aren't your style, not to fret ... there's also a rocket jet pack attachment.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/04/dojo-update-diddys-got-a-gun/">Dojo update: Diddy's got a gun</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 15:00:00 EST. Time to stop watching and join the fight, Pit!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/dojo-update-the-story-of-pit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dojo update: The story of Pit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/dojo-update-the-story-of-pit/">Dojo update: The story of Pit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Sep 2007 12:45:00 EST. While the main arena of the new <em>WarioWare</em> stage may look like the standard floating-platforms-over-a-flat-space template found in pretty much <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage06.html">every</a> <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage04.html">new</a> <em><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage08.html">Brawl</a> </em><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage01.html">stage</a>, it has its own special quirks. The <em>whole stage</em> transforms into <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/WarioWare/">WarioWare</a></em> microgames during play!<br /><br />In his post about the new stage, Masahiro Sakurai promises "rewards" for those who successfully complete the objective of each microgame. In the context of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dojo">Smash Bros</a>.</em>, we imagine that either to be a free item or damage for your opponents. <br /><br />The people who turn items off are going to <em>hate</em> this stage.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/dojo-update-warioware-brings-its-trademark-randomness-to-brawl/">Dojo update: WarioWare brings its trademark randomness to Brawl</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 15:40:00 EST. Brawl</em></a> as we are suggested this excellent question to get the day started: if you could see anyone in the game, any <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/07/smash-bros-brawl-whos-in-whos-out/">character</a> at all, who would you want? Today's <em>Smash Bros.</em> Dojo update is of special interest to nerds! Even more than usual, that is. The latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/dojo-update-assist-trophies/">assist trophy</a> has been revealed as Devil from the NES game <em>Devil World. </em><br /><br /><em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_World">Devil World</a> </em>is most significant for being a Shigeru Miyamoto game that has never been released in the US. The only such game, according to Wikipedia. In the <em>Pac-Man-</em>style game, Devil points in the direction in which the maze is about to scroll. And that's exactly what he does in <em>Smash Bros.</em>-- he points, and the screen scrolls. Since falling off of the screen is such an important component of <em>Smash Bros.</em>, Devil seems like quite a powerful assist!<br /><br />As much as we love the <em>actual gameplay </em>of <em>Smash Bros.</em>, it's stuff like Devil here that keeps bringing us back. <em>Super Smash Bros.</em> is like a living museum of Nintendo history!<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/dojo-update-hope-you-guessed-his-name/">Dojo Update: Hope you guessed his name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 13:30:00 EST. Do you <em>love</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/24/dojo-update-yoshi/">Yoshi</a>? Do all your friends know you as "The Yoshinator" because you're always talking about how awesome Yoshi is? Is your Yoshi vs. Robocop fanfic well-regarded? Have you somehow managed not to pick up a Wii yet, even though it's the future home of the Yoshi-fied <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dojo"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a>?<br /><br />If so, you're probably already cracking open your Emergency Yoshi Gear Fund to bid on this custom-painted Wii. The only thing that would make this better would be the release of <a href="http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/odd/pirate/kartfighter.html"><em>Kart Fighter</em></a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a>. An unofficial mod <em>demands</em> an unofficial game!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/gaming/bid-away/custom-yoshi-wii-for-sale-286906.php">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/the-best-yoshi-emblazoned-wii-weve-seen-today/">The best Yoshi-emblazoned Wii we've seen today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 18:10:00 EST. Joystiq reader n_revolution9 linked us to this picture from <a href="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/54208142/">CytosisX's</a> DeviantArt page in yesterday's recap. There may be a lot of wishful thinking in the <em>Smash Bros. </em>lineup (is that Bald Bull from <em>Super Punch-Out!!?</em>), but at 2876x1024 pixels, it's certainly a gorgeous mural for those with a multi-screen monitor setup. Check out the highlights for today:<br /><br /><strong>BlizzCon</strong><strong><br /> </strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/blizzcon-2007-world-of-warcraft-info-dump/" title="View Today's Dojo update reveals a new Pokemon in Deoxys. Not a <em>new Pokemon</em>, but rather a new Pokemon to <em>Smash Bros Brawl</em>. And, judging by the new screens in our gallery below, this Pokemon came to lay the smack down on some brawlers, as its Hyper Beam attack looks deadly. We can't wait to give our enemies a taste come <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/super-smash-bros-brawl-gets-release-date/">December 3rd</a>, that's for sure.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/dojo-update-deoxys-revealed/">Dojo update: Deoxys revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 13:00:00 EST. Today's Dojo update only brings us news of a new stage. Oh, but how <em>awesome</em> that stage looks, as Smashville makes its debut in the <em>Super Smash Bros. </em>franchise. With an <em>Animal Crossing</em> feel, the stage will seem familiar to all who've spent many an hour fishing in streams, digging for fossils and attending live performances of one K. K. Slider. Well, now you can catch him performing live in <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> on Saturday nights, as well!<br /><br />Check out some images of the new stage in our gallery below.<br /><br />
<br />[Thanks to everyone that sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/dojo-update-smashville-stage/">Dojo update: Smashville stage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 14:00:00 EST. It's been a couple of days since we checked in with the Dojo and boy are we mad at ourselves. Not only did we miss the unveiling of a new stage in the Bridge of Eldin from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=twilight+princess"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em></a>, but also a new Assist Trophy in the eccentric mayor of <em>SimCity</em>. That's right, none other than Dr. Wright has made his way into the game and, as one might expect, his penchant for helping build incredible cities has made its way in with him.<br /><br />Check out the gallery below to see what we mean.<br /><br />
<br /><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage05.html">Read</a> - Bridge of Eldin<br /><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/howto/technique/technique02.html">Read</a> - Standard combo breakdown<br /><a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/items/assist/assist03.html">Read</a> - Dr. Wright<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/dojo-update-stages-attacks-and-dr-wright-oh-my/">Dojo update: Stages, attacks and Dr. Wright oh my</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 12:00:00 EST. Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, <em>everything will be totally made-up and unfounded.</em> Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true.<br /><br /><strong>Rumor:</strong> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/new-e3-to-not-have-playable-smash-bros-on-display/"><em>Super Smash Bros. It's an online store in which you can purchase different-colored ties for Donkey Kong.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/conjecture-countdown-5-days-to-go/">Conjecture Countdown: 5 days to go</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST.
