For instance, did you guys know that the 1972 PC game Hunt the Wumpus is one of the best video games ever made? Right up there with Shadow of the Colossus and Chrono Trigger, it turns out.

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards? Yup, just as important as Metroid and Prince of Persia. We're not saying the list is wrong, per se, we just maybe wouldn't have put Solitaire on the same level as Myst. If anything, check out the full list here as a helpful shopping guide for the retro gamer on your holiday gift-giving list.
Time lists its 100 best video games by decade originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 02:00:00 EST. Some of you are young gentlemen, right? Of course you are. And like any young gentleman, you're a savvy newsreader, so you likely turn to Newsweek or The Nation for political analysis. We understand, Time Magazine just isn't for you since it started catering to older readers -- that's fair. But Time wants to win you over, and it's hoping that its promo tie-in with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will help in that battle.

"This is where the boys are," Time publisher Kim Kelleher told the New York Times, adding, "This is a great way to connect with millions of people we might not have otherwise connected with." According to the piece, both Time's editors and executives agreed to allow the use of the magazine's iconic cover wrapper after realizing that the pre-order bonus would be seen by many millions of Time's most elusive demographic -- young American males.

If that justification weren't enough for your journalistic sensibilities, managing editor Richard Stengel adds that the faux use of the cover for this promotion was "a similar idea in a different medium," comparing it to the various "Person of the Year" covers for fictional characters or concepts. He also points out that the medium involved in this case -- video games -- is part of "one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time." Now that was a necessary detail, Mr. Stengel!
Time Magazine defends Modern Warfare 3's faux cover originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Jun 2011 16:00:00 EST. In collating the top ten of everything in 2010 (excluding the top ten recursive jokes about top ten lists), Time has picked some of its favorite video games from the last twelve months. Among the top ten are science fiction stalwarts Halo: Reach and Mass Effect 2, the elegant and creepy Limbo, and iPhone finch fling-em-up, Angry Birds (which just makes it in, having launched at the very end of 2009).

Time's top choice is Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake, which is praised by writer Evan Narcisse for its mature craft and metaphoric gameplay. "Its mix of meta-awareness and Hitchcockian suspense make Alan Wake a unique and fun experiment and one of the best games of the year."

Alan Wake's devoted fans are likely to agree: Time couldn't have picked a better game, and the game couldn't have picked a worse time.
Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2 and Limbo among Time's best games of 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 21:00:00 EST. We rarely, if ever, write rebuttals to stories posted on the esteemed, list-friendly publication known as Time, but we've got more than a few bones to pick with its recently posted "50 Worst Inventions" list. Around every turn, the list seems to get it wrong. For instance: FarmVille? There are 70 million people who'd disagree with that one. And Virtual Boy? The world's first fully-3D game console/amateur LASIK surgery machine? That's about as progressive and brilliant as inventions get.

Check out the full list of so-called failed products on Time's site, and see if you share our feelings. Like, auto-tuning, guys? Really? One of the worst inventions ever? And Olestra? The ultimate nutritional cooking supplement? Did they read this list before they published it?
The upcoming Singularity from Raven Software is supposed to give you the power to age objects just by gesturing at them, and it appears that ability is being tested on the game itself: Its release date has been slowly edging into the future, from early 2010 up into March and then on to June. But it seems like the timeshifting has finally come to an end, as both Amazon and Gamefly have listed the game as releasing on June 29th of this year.

Activision originally cited the delay as an attempt to keep the game away from a crowded slate of "competitive titles," so perhaps the game will do better kicking off the dog days of summer. If Raven's time-bending twist on the FPS captures your interest, it'll be one more good reason to stay out of that hot, hot summer sun.
Remember Super Ramen Bros., the iPhone App that a team of developers crafted in just 24 hours? Have you ever wondered what that game might look like with an additional 48 hours of polish? The folks over at casual developer Dogtown Studios recently provided sustenance for your curiosity by challenging themselves to create an iPhone title in just three days. The result was Project 72, a simple, arcadey space flight game which, according to iPhone news site AppAdvice.com, is actually pretty good. You can check out some off-screen footage of the game after the jump.

The game, which is currently available on the App Store for $.99, was designed, developed and submitted between the hours of 8 p.m. on January 5 and 8 p.m. on January 8. We're pretty sure we spent that time poopsocking our way through the entire series of Lost on Netflix Instant Queue. In the very same official Q&A where it finally responded to the complaints of the Rockstar Spouses, Rockstar brings up an old friend we haven't heard from in a while: L.A. Noire, the "innovative," possibly console-based, "Ellroy-esque" game that's been in development almost since its noir inspired Los Angeles setting was current. It says that we'll finally get a good look at the game and why it's supposed to be so great as soon as "next month" courtesy of "a big cover story." What magazine? That's still a hush hush, on-the-QT and off the record secret.

But said cover story (Time? Popular Science? Dog Fancy?) will reportedly contain information about why both the look and "the amazing new technology" of the game are worth the wait. We would say not to hold your breath, but everyone still holding their breath for LA Noire turned blue and passed out about a year ago. Still, we're interested, so we'll keep eyes peeled on the magazine stands next month.
It's something that every meme learns sooner or later: The internet has a short memory. Just a year after it voted him the most influential person in Time's annual poll, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has been downgraded to 42nd place. You can now find him snuggled between Miley Cyrus and author Tucker Max.

Lest you doubt the validity of the list, it's topped by 4chan founder "moot," so, yeah. This is serious business. Oh well, at least Shiggy still beat the Pope on this completely useful list.

[Via GI.biz]
Shigeru Miyamoto slips down Time's most influential poll originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 11:15:00 EST. Anticipation is building for the upcoming director's cut of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which is set to drain Japanese wallets of MP next month, as well as give eager gamers their first hands-on taste of Final Fantasy XIII. The demo, which comes bundled with the Blu-ray exclusive movie, also promises to give players an early look at how the anticipated sequel handles combat, which judging by a recent 1UP article looks to sample both Final Fantasy XII and Squaresoft fan favorite, Xenogears.

Much like the "Active Time Battle" system seen elsewhere in the series, XIII's gauge-heavy combat will likely tread familiar territory for series vets. Here different actions -- such as casting a spell or smacking an imp upside the head with a giant sword -- each siphon off a different amount of "time" from a meter, with more powerful attacks demanding a greater sacrifice of patience. This all sounds interesting, though like mom and apple pie, Final Fantasy and combat just go together. And while the series' battles may lack a flaky crust, their mix of spiky hair and androgyny can be just as filling. Well, maybe not as much as mother's rhubarb pie -- that stuff's to die for.
Final Fantasy XIII's battle system explained originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 11:30:00 EST. While gamers probably won't be flocking to Time for its list of the top 10 games of 2008, there's little doubt that the list will wind up under the scrutiny of plenty of non-gamers. The list is part of the "Top 10 of Everything of 2008' feature, which includes lots of top 10s, including things like the top 10 scientific discoveries (LHC FTW!). So what made the number one spot on Time's list? None other than Grand Theft Auto IV. Taking the second spot is the excellent XBLA platformer Braid, followed by Little Big Planet at number three. Heavy hitters like Gears of War 2, Spore and Dead Space also make the list. Alongside them are some stranger picks including a Flash game, an iPhone game and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Check out the list for yourself and give us your feedback on the list. We're just guessing, but we're betting there are some games in your top ten that aren't on the list.
GTAIV, Braid top Time's best games of 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 13:15:00 EST.
Oh yes, the original Xbox in all its VCR-looking glory.
Love it or hate it, the original Xbox was a necessary step for us to have our pride and joy, the Xbox 360. So, let's take this Time sponsored opportunity to reminisce about the "glory" days. The original Xbox was no toy. It weighed more than your kid. The controller brought new meaning to "man hands" -- the darn thing was known as the "Duke," after all. In short, this was a man's console. And what could be manlier than a "mankind-vs-aliens space opera," its featured launch title?

Time has honored the big rig as one of its "Top 10 Microsoft Moments," barely nudging out the disastrous Vista launch for the #8 spot (er, chronologically, at least). To make this moment more meta, let's all share our top Xbox moments in the comments below. Despite receiving a few complaints from critics concerning gameplay shortcomings, Will Wright's latest brain child, Spore, was recently chosen as one of Time Magazine's 50 Best Inventions of 2008. Finishing in 20th place, and credited as "The Everything Game", Time remarked on the ambitious nature of the title, labeling it as "blasphemy, brilliance or both."

Other "inventions" listed include "The Direct-to-Web Supervillain Musical", Hulu.com, and 23andMe's home DNA test, which garnered top honors. The Large Hadron Collider, the "world's most expensive science experiment", made an unremarkable 5th place finish -- Time cited the machine's failure to follow through on its promise to destroy humanity as the reason for its disappointing placement on the list.

[Via Big Download]
Spore honored in Time's 50 Best Inventions of 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 17:30:00 EST. Buffeted by presidents, presidential hopefuls, titans of industry, and the occasional blogger on this year's Time 100 - a list of, well, those sorts of people - are Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy, better known to you all as "those Harmonix guys." While Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto came out tops on the user-voted list (ie: the popularity contest), Rigopulos and Egozy were cherry picked and their writeup comes to us courtesy of one Mr. Steven Van Zandt, guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band (yeah, the Boss also made the Time 100) and chair of the Rock Band music advisory board.

At the root of their new celebrity is Rock Band, of course, which Van Zandt says "is one of the ways kids will find music in the future" and "may just turn out to be up there with the rise of FM radio, CDs or MTV." While we're not quite ready to sign that declaration, we're thrilled that Rock Band is being put on Time's cultural pedestal and happy to have Little Steven as an impassioned (if somewhat partisan) proponent of the medium. Now what's a blog gotta do to get some Springsteen in the Rock Band Store?
Rock Band creators make the 2008 Time 100 list originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 May 2008 17:29:00 EST. The man, the myth, the legend himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, has crushed the competition on the voting block and secured his rightful place at the top of the list for Time Person of the Year. Of course, this doesn't actually mean he's going to be on the cover of Time magazine, but it's good to know he's at the top of the list. If anything, this will mean that Stephen Colbert will make fun of him on his show (check past the break).

Good job, everyone. You've done your duty, soldier, now enjoy some much-needed R & R.
Continue reading Miyamoto is your Time Person of the Year

Miyamoto is your Time Person of the Year originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. You did it! You helped beat out politicians, celebs, scientists, babes, a funny man, and even a weather-oriented Korean pop star. You've nominated fitness guru Shigeru Miyamoto as Time's (not officially Time's) most influential person of the year. Unfortunately for the banjo-plucking game designer, that was the case in last year's Time 100 list, when Shiggy, sandwiched between the world's fifth richest man and the author of "The Secret", nearly didn't make the cut. Though his pride was surely bruised, Miyamoto wasn't discouraged by the low ranking -- he merely stepped up his game, providing oversight for some of last year's best-selling Wii titles.

Perhaps that's why he's been nominated for the 2008 Time 100 list, where dedicated Nintendo fanboys have pushed the eccentric designer to number 27 -- somewhere between Michael Cera and Oprah. As upset as we were by Time's flubbing of us this year - a blogger can get used to seeing a horribly disfigured reflection of his own face in the cover of one of the nation's most prestigous newsweeklies y'know - the selection of Russian president Vladimir Putin as the magazine's Person of the Year (POTY) left us a little underwhelmed.

Lucky for us, the folks at Something Awful remedied our apathy with a tall serving of Photoshop phakery, planting all sorts of video game icons on the magazine's cover. Mario and Master Chief are great and all, but our favorite is BioShock's Andrew Ryan. It was not impossible to choose a video game character as Time's Person of the Year ... it was impossible to choose anyone else.
Forget Putin: Gaming icons Photoshopped as Persons of the Year originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 18:58:00 EST. Frankly, we're shocked. Number 7 is a very respectable spot for any game, considering we're talking about the 10 best games of the year, but come on. This is The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass we're talking about here, folks. It's an amazing title and arguable the best in what has been an amazing year full of quality titles on the DS. Heck, this time of year, we can't think of a better gift than a Phantom Hourglass bundle.

Besides Phantom Hourglass, what would you consider to be the best of the best on the DS this year?
Phantom Hourglass ranks at 7 on Time's top 10 games of 2007 list originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 17:00:00 EST. Good choice. TIME says that Halo 3 is their game of the year because "every level is perfectly paced and balanced and graced with soaring architectural compositions" and that "it's graphically gorgeous". Well said. Other top ten finishers include The Orange Box at #2, Rock Band at #3, BioShock at #5, CoD4 at #6, Mass Effect at #8 and Ace Combat 6 lands in at #9. It's time for Time magazine and every other publication to start dropping their "top whatever" lists of the year. Taking the high honor this year from Time in video games for being "a pebble that has been rounded over the centuries by the gentle splashing of the ocean waves" is Halo 3. The magazine notes that Bungie has refined the series to the point of "pure, unadulterated gaming bliss," though we're a little lost when it calls Halo "graphically gorgeous." Still, it's Time -- we're not expecting too much accuracy from the mainstream press when it comes to video games lately.

The next two spots on the Time list are held by The Orange Box and Rock Band, with both games getting their spots for presenting a bunch of things in one package. Rounding out the top five are Super Mario Galaxy and BioShock. With any luck, BioShock won't be missing from many mainstream lists just because it came out more than a month ago. Heck, we're hoping it doesn't get forgotten on a lot of industry lists.
Time magazine names Halo 3 game of the year originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 12:15:00 EST. Pick a typical week for this question, when there isn't anything super special that's come out. Do you try to play a little every day, or are there only certain days?

Of course, for many of us, the entire equation changes when something truly awesome comes out. Then, we find ourselves hurrying through other responsibilities so we can get a little extra gaming time in. Look back at some of your favorite releases from the past year -- how much did you play then?
DS Daily: On average originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. In the latest issue of Time, you can spot the Master Chief right on the cover. Well, actually it's a multiplayer Spartan model and you'll find him (or her) in a small box in the upper-right corner. Still, it's Halo on the cover of Time and that has to count for something. Naturally, the magazine contains an article describing what makes Halo 3 tick. Don't go looking for the detailed analysis provided by the recent Halo 3 cover story in Wired, as Time's "The Man in the Mask" is written from an outsider's perspective. Written to appeal to the non-gaming set -- though the author is in fact an avid gamer -- the article attempts to explain the Halo phenomenon to "normal" people. Our favorite section in the article describes the level of detail lavished on the game. Specifically, the section refers to the shells that are ejected from fired weapons. According to an unnamed Bungie audio engineer, "We actually are insane ... because we track the impact of each shell casing on each surface. Literally. We ought to be locked up." Even though the article is focused through the lens of an older generation, Time seems impressed with Halo 3, even daring to give it the lofty label of "art." Who knows, if Bungie keeps up this pace, maybe the Chief will land on the cover proper.
While sifting through the latest issue of Time magazine, we stumbled upon a ten question mini-interview with actor Ben Kingsley. One reader-submitted question, from Shane O'Sullivan of Auckland, New Zealand (thanks, Shane!) asked what we've all wanted to know. We've reprinted it here, because there's no way to say it better:

What were you thinking when you accepted a role in Bloodrayne? It's so hard to imagine someone so gifted not realizing what a terrible film that would be!

"I don't know whether to be upset or flattered by that question," read his response. "To be honest, I have always wanted to play a vampire, with the teeth and the long black cape. Let's say that my motives were somewhat immature for doing it."
Ben Kingsley explains why he did Bloodrayne originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 23:11:00 EST. Virtually Overlooked has taken over Wii Fanboy! All this week, members of the staff will be outlining their personal picks for future Virtual Console releases.

Growing up with gaming is an interesting thing these days. Many of you are part of the first generation that was quite literally born into a household with a gaming console, as I was. In my experience, if you start off in life gaming hard, you don't stop. Therefore, in the very near future, I will able to ask a random middle-aged man if he wants to go play Guitar Hero 4, and it won't be totally weird.

Who am I kidding? This isn't Japan, and that guy will probably think I am, in fact, totally weird. But man, screw those non-gamers. The hardcore, like you and I, have tons of gaming memories, and thus we frequently long for the games of yore to be released on the Virtual Console. But they have not yet appeased my feral hunger, and thus do I lay these games out in a commanding fashion for Nintendo's minions to take note.

You, of course, may gaze as well.

No, we're not talking about literacy or obesity or anything so unimportant. We're talking about video games. Get your priorities straight, people!

According to a shocking report in the Dayton Daily News, the graduating class of 2007 is being distracted from important game-playing time by attention-stealing activities like "homework, jobs and extracurricular activities." That's right ... the promise of our future would rather do their homework than put in the important gaming time that will help them grow into mature and active adult gamers.

What's worse, some of today's graduating seniors have a hard time envisioning a future that included normative social gaming. "If some guy was like 'You want to go on a date? We could play Guitar Hero,' and I'm 30, I'd be, like, 'No!,' " said one such lost youth. It's enough to make you long for the good old days when students knew how important a Pac-Man high score was to their future.

[Via Gaming Today]
Are today's students getting enough gaming time? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 19:00:00 EST. The method used to accomplish this goal? Flying around in airplanes and shooting everything, obviously. Something doesn't seem right about going into the past and shooting up the landscape to prevent the changing of world events, but what do we know? We aren't time travologists.

There are 19 levels of time-travely, rail-shooty action, and a bunch of different planes from past, present and future. And speaking of flight in the past, this game doesn't use the touch screen for flight controls. Lots of you felt the need to lambast some of our favorite titles in yesterday's DS Daily, but hey, we're nice people. We'll let it slide.

So, we've heard which games you would bring down from their pedestals of glory ... which would you raise? Which games don't get the attention they deserve, despite wonderful game mechanics or plot? We'd like to nominate Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, a title which slipped under the radars of Paper Mario fans nationwide. This one isn't ranked hierarchically; the fact that Miyamoto is #92 out of 100 is only because he's categorized in the last section, "Builders and Titans." Put down your torches.

Strangely, the piece about Miyamoto is written by Johnathan "Fata1ty" Wendel, who, as a competitive PC gamer, seems pretty far removed from the fun-for-all Wii phenomenon. He's also possibly the first Time writer with a part-1337 name.
Miyamoto makes the print version of Time 100 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 10:35:00 EST. It seems you're not just Time Magazine's overall person of the year, you're also the most influential. At least when it comes to influencing a poll on the 100 most influential people of the year. After being nominated for Time's own top 100, it comes as little surprise to see Nintendo's legendary designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, place highly in the list constructed by internet users. With an average rating of 75 (out of 100) and 129,573 votes, the Mario maestro places 9th and effortlessly defeats the likes of Oprah Winfrey (43rd), George W. Bush (97th), George Clooney (26th) and Nelson Mandela (24th). Sure, the anti-apartheid, pro-democracy Nobel Peace prize winner wasn't involved in the creation of a new video game system this year, but we'd be remiss not to point out the amusing and somewhat bizarre priorities of voters.

And what of the list above Miyamoto? There you'll find Kiefer Sutherland (8th), J.K. Rowling (6th), Dane Cook and, nestled snugly in first position, Rain (who?). Time Magazine's own list wisely does away with rankings and lumps the designer on page 92, but not before suffering a critical lapse in sanity and asking Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel to extend his fingers beyond the WASD keys. Noting that Miyamoto "opened the world" to a host of "people who never even wanted to visit it before" is about all Wendel's article can manage before losing the plot and discussing his 12 championship wins, ultra-performance PCs and how he'll spend the rest of his life "championing video gaming as an equal to pro football or basketball."

Good thing he didn't write the Mandela bit, then.
Miyamoto more influential than Nelson Mandela: Confirmed originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 May 2007 22:34:00 EST. And this year, our opinions will help shape Time's. And that's why we say Shigeru Miyamoto hasn't taken over the list yet. If there's anything gamers are good at, it's being vocal on the Internet.

He's currently sitting at number 3 on the list with an average rating of 92, but we're sure that our collective clicking-on-things power will drive him to the top of the list. Sure, that's above every world leader and every scientist, but if they wanted carefully-researched decisions about relative world influence, they shouldn't have asked the Internet. They're lucky that we're even voting for real people.
Miyamoto hasn't quite taken over this Time Magazine list originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 18:15:00 EST. In 2006 it was ... no one.

Yes, Time's last list of the 100 most influential people in the world broke from tradition and didn't feel the need to include anyone from the game industry. While nobodies like Nicolas Ghesquiere and Rain got coveted spots on the list, the leaders of a $12.5 billion industry got bupkis.

Luckily, you can help rectify this situation. What is the Time 100? Well, it's a who's-who list of influential and powerful people, a list that certainly demands to have one of, if not the most, influential game designers in the industry, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Lucky for him, you can have a say in who makes the list. All you have to do is follow the read link and give Mr. Miyamoto a rating. As of right now, he's got an average rating of 79, but we're sure that will come up. So, head on over and let your voice be heard.
Help Miyamoto get a nod from Time Magazine originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 13:25:00 EST. Each day, a different member of the staff will present their personal top five DS games along with a snapshot of their gaming paraphernalia and habits, in an effort to provide our readers with a little more information on the tastes and personalities of our writers.

It's odd; in the past two years, I've played my DS more than any other system, console or otherwise. However, I very rarely play outside of the comfort of my own room. Sure, I have the ten minute bus ride to campus everyday, and an hour break between classes, but the bus ride is relaxing and the hour I spend on campus, playing chess with some friends. It's really a testament to the quality of the library on the DS, that it would stand against the heavy-hitting consoles without the added advantage of portability.

I'm a bit of a Renaissance gamer, playing titles far and wide. Sure, I've grown tired of the World War II shooters, but if a game is innovative and/or well-crafted, I'll give it a shot. I also like bunnies and salsa dancing and figure skating; I'm so macho.
Continue reading DS Fanboy Favorites: Jason's top five

DS Fanboy Favorites: Jason's top five originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. Two suggestions: (1) be sure to attend conventions and network with publishers, show off your work and (2) make sure your work doesn't suck.

The other piece comes from Time magazine that discusses the proliferation of webcomics. It even includes complimentary blurbs about Penny Arcade and PvP Online, credited with being one of the first webcomics. Congratulations guys!

Now here are some of our picks for the week's best game-related webcomics, be sure to vote for your favorite!*
