Tuesday 7 May

? ? ? lbs. I never weigh myself on a day of celebration.

Food consumed today: King Crab Legs in a bucket, like a boss!

Late afternoon. New York. Manhattan. Red Lobster in Times Square.

Dearest Diary,

It's been ever so long, but I must put emotion to paper. I'm writing this from a men's room stall at Red Lobster because I couldn't hold it in any longer. Don't be vulgar, Di! I mean my emotion! The 8-K filing went public today, and it says Karl Slatoff is now president at Take-Two and I just had to tell you.

Karl's been my chief operating officer since 2010 (when I became CE-O-O-Oh yeah!) and it was about time for him to take on another "newly created role" like last time. And since Karl is a kingly name, and heavy is my head that wears the crown, I figured we should go for king crab at Red Lobster.

"But they don't serve king crab at Red Lobster, only snow crab," you say. True, but Karl and I - to honor the heritage of our first names - dressed up as Bavarian tourists in full lederhosen and we had a bucket of king crab legs served that I had flown in from Alaska this morning. The cook was quite amenable to the idea after I gave him an early copy of Grand Theft Auto 5.

Anyway, next week we announce Take-Two's full-year financial results and between Borderlands 2, XCOM, our sports games and GTA at the end of this year, I'm thinking Karl and I can play German tourist more often.

Promise to write to you more,
Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 have been rated for PlayStation devices by the ESRB, implying that the two classic crime games are on the way to the PlayStation Network. Yup, if you're as surprised as we are this hadn't happened already, join us in the boat.

Curiously, rumors of GTA and GTA 2 coming to PSN go all the way back to February 2008, when Official PlayStation Magazine first heard whispers. The other rumored game from that same article, Street Fighter Alpha, arrived in August 2008. GTA certainly took its time.
Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 rated for PlayStation platforms originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 May 2013 09:20:00 EST. Take-Two plans to have meeting rooms at the show, but 2K's presence isn't planned. 2K Games announced earlier this week that it would not have a booth on the show floor at E3. That didn't necessarily mean the company wouldn't participate at all, since we've seen publishers in the past not have a booth, but hold meetings in the upstairs concourse.

A representative for the Entertainment Software Association, which organizes the annual conference, tells us, "We can confirm that Take-Two Interactive Software is participating in E3 2013."

"We are going to have a meeting room in the upper concourse level and we'll be doing some business meetings as we usually do," a Take-Two spokesperson tells Joystiq. "2K is not participating."

As for Rockstar, the rebellious child of Take-Two, we're still waiting to hear official word if they plan to participate. Rockstar does not typically attend E3 and hasn't made any announcements.

2K's scheduled projects for this year include The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Civilization V: Brave New World, XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iOS, more Borderlands 2 content, WWE 2K14 and NBA 2K14.
2K Games won't attend E3, Take-Two to have meeting rooms originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. The company raked in net revenue (read: gross income) of $415.7 million during that period; a 75.9 percent increase over the $236.3 million it earned in Q3 of fiscal 2012.

Net income (read: profit) was also up year-over-year, $71.3 million during Q3 2013 versus $14.1 million in 2012, which is an astonishing 405.9 percent increase. Meanwhile, Take-Two's nine month year-to-date figures are reporting a loss of $51.9 million, down from the $41.9 million loss reported at this same time in fiscal 2012.

Revenues accrued from digital sales were up 244 percent year-over-year, an increase that Take-Two attributes to Borderlands, Borderlands 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, NBA 2k13, the Grand Theft Auto series and all of those games' respective DLC.
Take-Two Interactive bags 405% year-over-year profit increase during Q3 2013 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 16:55:00 EST. The franchise has now shipped over 15 million units since NBA 2K11.

Part of the series' success has been the lack of competition from Electronic Arts. Last year's NBA Live 13 was canceled, after already being downgraded to a digitally distributed product. An IGN source suggests Take-Two will take over the WWE line of games.

The negotiations for the WWE license apparently took place outside of the formal THQ auction, IGN notes. This morning the developer posted several screenshots on the company's site for Grand Theft Auto 5 to elicit speculation.

There's a swimming with sharks shot, along with a dog in the passenger seat of a car. Drive-by pooches confirmed?! There's also a mini submarine picture, as well as a shot featuring a commercial jet, a fighter jet and a blimp. No word yet if these are actual player-controlled vehicles for use in the game, but feel free to dream about that tonight, along with sugar plums dancing.
Grand Theft Auto 5 sharks, subs and pups be rollin' screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST. The move, which popped up on radar this past weekend, is made possible by a partnership between the publisher and the state of Nevada, along with the city of Las Vegas.

"This move will allow 2K to operate a significantly larger and more effective QA facility as we continue to grow our business across all divisions," said 2K COO David Ismailer.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman noted, "We have a skilled and talented workforce in Las Vegas that is ideal for companies like Take-Two. I am so thrilled that they will be a part of the downtown community, and I know that their presence will attract other high-tech firms to Las Vegas."

Obviously, Take-Two made the move for some tax breaks. The publisher is also applying for "Catalyst Funds" from the state. The $10 million Catalyst Fund was created in 2011 and is designed to incentivize "the expansion or relocation of businesses that will quickly result in the creation of high-quality, primary jobs in Nevada."

Now, before you bring up that other government-financed debacle, let's be clear that there's a huge difference between $10 million and $75 million. Also, it doesn't appear Take-Two is seeking the whole enchilada.

Take-Two moving 2K QA to downtown Las Vegas originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 15:30:00 EST. If opened, the new facility would employ a minimum of 150 persons full-time, all of whom would earn a "gross average hourly wage, including overtime, of at least $18 per hour."

The agreement also stipulates that, in order for Take-Two to be eligible for the (up to) $600,000 in incentives, 15 percent of all full-time employees must be "full time residents within the Agency's redevelopment area" as well as "members of racial minorities, women, disabled or veterans."

The purpose of the facility is still uncertain; whether this could be a new studio or a satellite testing office is unknown. It's worth noting, however, that while $18 an hour sounds like QA/testing wages, that's the minimum amount required by the agreement and may not accurately reflect what the real average ends up being.
Take-Two potentially opening new offices in Las Vegas originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 21:00:00 EST. Washington claimed he met with the game's developers in 2003 to discuss his troubled youth and "street life." He first learned of his resemblance to the game's "CJ" character six years later, leading to the $250 million lawsuit.

The California appeals court upheld the ruling in favor of Take-Two, in which the judge said the "plaintiff is relying entirely on CJ's physical appearance in the game, but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males." The lack of evidence in whether Take-Two actually used Washington's likeness, in addition to a failed test for insufficiently transformative use, led to Washington losing the case.
Backup singer loses lawsuit against Take-Two over GTA: San Andreas originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 12:00:00 EST. At the end of the day, however, the company did have a net loss of $12.5 million, which is still significantly better than the $123.3 loss from the same period last year.

The big gun during the quarter was Borderlands 2, which shipped over 5 million units, along with catalog sales of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption. Revenue from digital distribution was up 108 percent year-over-year, with "strong digital sales" (i.e. non-retail) mentioned for new releases Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

With Grand Theft Auto 5 officially given a spring 2013 release window, it should be noted that Take-Two reduced its "financial outlook" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, removing $600 million in forecasted sales. That extra $600 million raised our eyebrows when it appeared in the company's projections at the beginning of the fiscal year, as the math would only really work out if Take-Two was planning GTA 5 before April 1, 2013. That is, obviously, no longer the case and the company has reduced its outlook to "reflect its revised assumed release schedule."
Take-Two revenue up 155% during Q2, outlook removes $600 million following GTA 5 delay originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 10:00:00 EST. In partnership with Korean-based studio XLGAMES, the game is being built "from the ground up" as an online-only experiences for the Asian market.

Civilization studio Firaxis is mentioned as lending its expertise and vision, but the game is being created "under the leadership of " XLGAMES CEO and MMOG designer Jake Song, who helped create Lineage. A team of "more than 100" are working on the project in Seoul.

"Over the last four years, we have been focused on creating an ambitious portfolio of online and social games with some of the most revered companies in Asia such as Tencent in China, Nexon Korea Corporation and XLGAMES in Korea, GREE and CyberAgent in Japan," said Take-Two Asia president Hubert Larenaudie.

Take-Two notes that response in the region to NBA 2K Online, which launched yesterday after months of beta testing, has been very encouraging. Although no specific figures were provided, NBA 2K13 reportedly sold 49 percent more worldwide during its first-week sales than previous record holder NBA 2K11.

"Our early sales figures are a validation of our ongoing efforts to push this franchise to new heights," said 2K Sports VP of marketing Jason Argent. We'll let that "turn-based strategy" bit sink in before we continue.... Okay, so, it is a strategy game from Firaxis, the studio behind the accessible Civilization series, which we said in our review "deftly blended management, tactics and the sort of gut-level, throaty encounters usually reserved for fast-paced action games."

Edge (90/100): "Charting a course through Earth's imminent destruction is as unashamedly difficult as it was in 1994's X-COM. It's possible, through bad planning and bad management, to doom the planet early on, making the game feel unfair. Get it right, however - survive the stresses of management, and the strains of aliens - and you'll feel like world's greatest hero."

Eurogamer (90/100): "So much craft has gone into its atmosphere, into innumerable small details that together add enormous depth and flavour to the world: the occasional conversations overheard while fiddling around in the base; the mission loading screen, which gives you a view of the troops inside the carrier, fidgeting and tapping their feet in transit; the ridiculously cute touch of soldiers acquiring nicknames like 'Longshot' or 'Odin' after a few missions; the memorial room for fallen warriors, with a cork board of photos on the wall, which records their names - and the fact that visiting it triggers, after a few seconds, the sound of a bagpipe march. "

Destructoid (90/100): "I was disappointed EU didn't have a great story, at first. But, somewhere along the way, my own story played out through the game's intense missions and grueling decision making back at the base. My story is about an unlikely group of space heroes. After months of waging a seemingly impossible war, my elite squad of XCOM soldiers died."

Polygon (85/100): "While tactical, squad-based combat has never felt so effortless and rewarding, the strategy component takes just enough away to make the game as a whole feel like two slightly disjointed halves. "Although our commitment to quality may occasionally affect near-term results, we believe it's the right approach for maximizing revenue and profits over the long-term."

Zelnick later mentioned BioShock Infinite, which was delayed to February 26, and Grand Theft Auto 5, which never had an official release date but was widely expected to launch some time in 2012. Beyond the core game for consoles and PC, there will be an NBA 2K13 companion app for a whole mess of mobile devices, a social game on Facebook, a regular mobile version of the game for iOS and Android and ... that may be it?

The MyNBA2K app, available in October for iOS, Android and Kindle, will be a collection of minigames, and will also connect to the main game's MyCAREER and MyTEAM features. The Facebook game, NBA 2K: MyLIFE, will allow players to import their MyCAREER avatar from the main game to compete for endorsement deals, which will unlock rewards in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the main game. Finally, there's an NBA 2K13 game for iOS and Android - again, available in October.

NBA 2K13 will be available in, you guessed it, October. EA's unusually quiet NBA Live 13 should be available around the same time, following a multi-year hiatus.

Gallery: NBA 2K13 (Cover Players)

NBA 2K Everywhere puts NBA 2K13 on everything originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 10:00:00 EST. Both of us played single-player before, so we had some idea of what we were getting into - but multiplayer is an entirely different beast. Using a pool of points, players "purchase" the units that will comprise their team: XCOM soldiers, aliens, or a mix of both. The standard match has a pool of 10,000 points and a turn time of 90 seconds. For this press demo, we had a whopping 20,000 points and 120 seconds. It sounds like a lot of time, but it wasn't - more on that in a bit.

What units did you pick? (Keep in mind, folks, I had no idea what I was going to face on the field, and neither did Alexander.)

Alexander Sliwinski: I believe in the power of humanity! Actually, no, it's mostly that I'd never played an XCOM game prior to the E3 demo, and I had no idea about each race's powers. So, I went with three human soldiers, two Thin Men and then spent a massive 7,300 points on an assault gunner with an alloy cannon. Whether directly or indirectly, three questions in a row tried to eke out any details about the game, which appears to be part of the publisher's high revenue projections but still has an official "TBA" release date.

"Strauss, we've heard nothing, next to nothing, on GTA 5 development over the last couple months," said Mike Hickey of National Alliance Securities. "We've seen a couple screenshots. The game is believed by the street to be implied by your guidance for this fiscal year, but what believability do we have that this game is actually going to come out this year?"

CEO Strauss Zelnick responded, "We haven't talked about a release date. So obviously we can't talk about the credibility of a release date that we haven't announced."

Pushed further on whether the publisher is receiving consistent updates, the CEO deflected.

"We wouldn't talk publicly about the way we communicate with our teams internally," replied Zelnick. "We are blessed to be in business with the Rockstar folks and everyone knows that I feel that way. We have the best creative teams in the business across our company."

Though the company did announce today that "consumer anticipation is phenomenal" for Borderlands 2, it would still need to hit home runs with NBA 2K13, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and BioShock: Infinite to hit its forecast.
Take-Two investor call theme: Where's Grand Theft Auto 5? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 19:18:00 EST.
