Developer Team 17 revealed the news on the EU PlayStation Blog, noting that Worms Revolution will launch on October 10 for £9.99/€12.99. For those who haven't been following the game, Worms Revolution is built with a brand new engine and adds dynamic water and different worm classes to the traditional Worms formula.

Unsurprisingly, the post doesn't mention the release date for the PC or Xbox Live Arcade version - or the North American PSN release date, for that matter - though they will presumably arrive on or near the same date. We've reached out to Team 17 to see if we can suss out release dates on all platforms.
Worms Revolution gets classy this October originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 12:30:00 EST. News from the Steam Community tells us that Worms Reloaded, that new "extended" version of the old game in which sentient invertebrates do battle with rockets and/or sheep, is moving up to a worldwide beta. Previously, the game was only available for testing in Europe, but it's opening it up globally on Monday, so children of all nations will be able to throw airstrikes and ninja ropes at each other then.

The only catch? You need a key, and they've only got a few. So you'll just have to hope you come up when they spin the random numbers around. We do know that you have to be a member of the official group, so sign in over there right now ... and then begins the waiting game.
Remember that "new" edition of Worms that Team 17 announced for Steam? It turns out that it may not be that "new" after all, which isn't a bad thing. Big Download did a little sleuthing and discovered that the game is actually based on the recent versions that have appeared on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Specifically, Team 17's Facebook page notes that Worms Reloaded will be "an extended edition of the console versions of late." Again, however, the studio leaves any other details to your expansive imagination.

In other words, it's time to start arguing about why it's absolutely essential that Reloaded includes your favorite weapon. Not your stupid best friend's favorite weapon though. That thing totally ruins the game, Stephen!
Worms Reloaded is 'an extended edition' of XBLA, PSN versions originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 23:29:00 EST. A recent tweet from Team 17's Martyn Brown has revealed that everyone's favorite combative invertebrates will soon star in a new 2D outing on Steam, titled Worms Reloaded. That's literally all we know about the game at the moment, though Brown's tweet promises more details soon. Until then, we're left to worry that it's going to be an all-annelid remake of The Matrix: Reloaded, which would be totally awesome, until, of course, the big rave/orgy scene.
New 2D Worms game squirming its way to Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. There isn't a whole lot to say about my six or so hours spent with Worms, and as such, this won't be one of the longer iPhone game reviews you read anytime soon. In fact, if you've played past Worms games, then you're going to find some pretty glaring issues to complain about here and not much of anything new.

The game looks great, has tons of content (near equivalent to the recent XBLA release, Worms 2: Armageddon), and doesn't cost a whole lot of money ($5). There are, however, a handful of niggling complaints that could be made about the lack of precision control necessary for a time-based game, as well as long load times strewn throughout the game's menus. Unfortunately, these little issues add up to a much bigger one -- they make me not want to play the game.
Team 17's Martyn Brown believes the barriers to self-publishing on Xbox Live Arcade are becoming more difficult to break through. The studio director tells GI.biz that it's "massively" harder to get games on XBLA now, saying that there just aren't "many gaps in the portfolio" and the top sellers are mostly established IPs -- like his company's Worms games.

Brown believes that new developers without established connections need to make titles that cater to the platforms. He expresses that Sony "tends to like the new stuff" that isn't necessarily mass market, while with Microsoft "you're really going for the commercial mass market audience." The takeaway from this is that as digital distribution goes from being the new frontier to becoming the norm, it's going to have similar issues as current brick-and-mortar retailers.
Team17: XBLA publishing is much harder now originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 19:00:00 EST. Developer Team17 loves its Facebook page. This morning the company announced a "retro modern remake" of Alien Breed, one of its games from way back in 1991. Alien Breed Evolution is an Unreal Engine 3-powered shooter, which can be played solo or co-op later this year. A representative for Team 17 tells us that a video of the game should be released in two to three weeks.

Team17 also teased that iPhone Worms "looms... not long now." There is currently a tentative date, but the developer is awaiting the go from Apple. Like a good Worm, though, Team 17 has everything locked, loaded and ready to fire when ready.
Team17 announces Alien Breed Evolution, teases imminent iPhone Worms originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 11:10:00 EST. A video posted over at Pocket Gamer seems to show off a very early build of Worms for the iPhone. The video is pretty brief, though it still manages to impress us through some slick visuals and competent controls. Whether or not this is real, know that we want it to be real.

We've put in word to both Team17 and EA's mobile division (which was rumored to have acquired the license). EA got back to us to say that the company "does not comment on rumor and speculation." While we wait on Team17, you can head past the break and watch poor Harlequin catch a rocket to the face.

Update: We've spoken with a source at Team17 that has confirmed the video past the break is authentic and something the team produced in-house, choosing to sneakily unload it onto the 'nets, rather than send Joystiq a press release. Our contact said that Team17 has actually moved to self-publish games in the digital distribution space, so it no longer needs to rely on partners get its products out there. So, in short: Worms on the iPhone is real, Team17 is doing everything, and there isn't any planned release date as of right now.
Continue reading Team17 working on Worms for iPhone [Update]

Team17 working on Worms for iPhone [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST. One might usually think of bunnies or egg hunts when it comes to Easter; however, this year you'll be thinking of Worms. We're talking about the turn-based combat title from Team17 Software. Worms will be heading over to European PSN stores on Easter Sunday (April 12).

The game is already out in the US and can be bought for $12.99. The European version will be similarly priced at £7.99/€9.99.
Worms wriggles onto Euro PSN on Easter originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST. Mobile Entertainment reports it has documentation that "suggests" EA will become the exclusive global distributor of Worms on mobile platforms starting June 1. THQ Wireless currently holds the license, but given the publisher's shakeup in its mobile division earlier this year, this license transfer revelation sounds probable.

EA knows what it's doing in the mobile space, and given its affection for the iPhone, we have some high hopes and expectations if the mega-publisher does indeed take over the license.
Team 17 has revealed on its Facebook page some images and details about its double-barrel offering of Worms on PSN and XBLA. With the OFLC outing both games last week, the studio didn't see the harm in showing off avatar support and vertical levels for the XBLA version, which is now apparently being called Worms 2: Armageddon.

The PSN edition of Worms -- which is an "expanded" port of the original XBLA game -- features "vastly" improved physics and displays in 1080p. We should have hands-on time with both titles at GDC and hopefully get a release window by then.

The Armageddon Decade rating appears to have been applied for by Microsoft, which probably means this Worms edition will be an exclusive XBLA release and is a different project than the PSN's upcoming Worms. If the awesomeness that is Worms Armageddon is anything to go by, the XBLA's special Decades edition should be one of the most enjoyable Worms titles to date. That is, if Team 17 doesn't skimp on the weapon selection.

Update: Team 17 just informed us about the differences between the upcoming Worms games. The PSN edition will be an enhanced version of the XBLA release, including more weapons, additional levels, new audio and 1080p support.

The XBLA release of Worms Armageddon Decade (which we're told is subject to a name change) will be a "vastly expanded edition" of the original XBLA Worms, that will include weapons and features from Worms Armageddon as well as other brand new content. More details to come.
The Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (or USK, for those who are terrified of lengthy, foreign words), Germany's game rating organization, isn't traditionally known for bringing us the hottest scoops. However, a recent listing on their site perked up our ever-attentive ears -- they recently stamped a Freigegeben ab 6 Jahren gemäß § 14 JuSchG (restricted for those below the age of six) rating to a PS3 version of Worms. Given that the genre of said listing is "Arcade", we think it's safe to assume that they're referring to a PSN port of the XBLA title.

This isn't a particularly surprising turn of events -- Worms has sold over half a million on the XBLA, and its done so over the course of about two years. However, Team 17, the game's developer, hasn't formally announced the PSNified title. Assuming the USK hasn't got its wires crossed, we should be hearing more about the port fairly soon.
USK diagnoses PS3 with a severe case of Worms originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 10:15:00 EST. As expected, a trio of <strike>new</strike>, er, old games has joined the Arcade Hits lineup as part of this week's Xbox Live Arcade update: Worms (something burrowed), Feeding Frenzy (something blue) and Ultimate MK3 (something, well, old). Each game has been discounted to 400 ($5).

And, as you may have gathered from the headline (if you made it to the end), there are no new releases on XBLA this week, ending a 26-week release streak that began on May 7th (according to our stat boy's research*). Perhaps the hiatus is intended to build anticipation for ... something big?

(Our best guess: We're in store for "something giant," as in the Giant Avatar game, A Kingdom for Keflings -- NXE is just one week away!)

*If we got that wrong, blame the intern!

Update: CarpeD1em500 brings up a good point. If you pre-ordered Nuts & Bolts you may have received a download code for Banjo-Kazooie on XBLA, which is available to you now. The game should be released to the public on or around November 26th. And, oh! We almost forgot: The Street Fighter "table" is also available for Pinball FX today!
This Wednesday: Something burrowed, something blue, something old, nothing new on XBLA originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 13:15:00 EST. However, the particular titles that Nintendo has chosen to advertise may not be of interest to you, with one possible exception. Without a doubt, the highlight of this week's offerings (online until June 8) is a Worms: Open Warfare 2 demo. Try it out right now, and if you like it, you can pick it up for $10 at Gamestop!

We're personally interested in the Cake Mania 2 demo, but other than that, it's Disney's show. If this were TV and you were 12, that would be great, but in terms of DS game content? Not so awesome. Hit the break for the full, fully underwhelming list.
Continue reading New demos on Nintendo Channel: Timely Worms demo and others

New demos on Nintendo Channel: Timely Worms demo and others originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 15:00:00 EST. The majority of coverage for Worms: A Space Oddity has focused on the lack of online play (including the title and first sentence of this post). However, lots of Worms games have been offline-only (if only because so many of them predate online capabilities in game consoles), and fixating on that disappointment draws attention away from the other aspects of the game, which include: the whole game.

Four new trailers for the game focus on the game's new or updated weapons, like the Robo-Sheep seen here. The Robo-Sheep is like a regular sheep, but robotic, because it's more sci-fi that way. Also you can move the Wiimote up to make it jump before exploding.
Continue reading There's more to Worms than not being online

There's more to Worms than not being online originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. No online? No sale.

IGN Australia confirmed in a recent preview that developer Team 17 has left out the online multiplayer and WiiConnect24 downloadable content features we were looking forward to. The hands-on impressions also has details on the level editor and new weapons, but those points seem overshadowed by the missing online support.

Why wasn't this a high priority item on Team 17's docket? And what reason would any level-headed gamer have to purchase A Space Oddity over the online-enabled, $20-dollars-cheaper Worms: Open Warfare 2 on the DS?
Worms: A Space Oddity for Wii will not include online multiplayer like developer Team17 had previously announced. ShackNews confirmed the info with THQ and the publisher put some great spin on the situation saying, "Worms: A Space Oddity is a social gaming experience that is best enjoyed locally, in a party-game atmosphere with other players."

We love us some Worms, particularly those of the superior 2D variety, so news that the Wii would be getting its very own title dedicated to the soft-bodied invertebrates raised spirits somewhat in the NWF dungeons.

These new shots of Worms: A Space Oddity follow up from October's lone trailer (which you can view after the post break), and certainly live up to the "Space " bit in the title; those green worms look reassuringly Martian. All being well, the antagonistic annelids should be touching down on Earth around next March, though considering its cheapness on PC and Xbox Live Arcade, anyone else think a budget price might be in order here?
Those with the PSP version of Worms: Open Warfare 2 will want to boot up the UMD and head into Infrastructure mode. The critter-filled action game has new downloadable content, and will continue to get new expansions, every other Friday into November. Each update will feature one additional map and landscape each. However, the first update included six flags (Yin Yan, Shotgun, Victory, UFO, Pointing and Peace) and four landscapes (Winter, Tugboat, Robot and Race). It's a nice, free way of extending the life of your game.
Worms downloadable content arrives every other Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 21:45:00 EST. The recent Worms: Open Warfare 2 only has a few major reviews under its metaphorical belt thus far, but if the current scoring trend continues, the title will take its place among some of the most beloved titles on the system. The latest Worms installment has racked up some high praise and has already snagged the 20th slot on Metacritic's list of the highest-ranked DS games.

Of course, as more reviews roll in, all of that could change -- but for now, things are looking good for the wiggly warriors.

IGN -- 87%: "Worms: Open Warfare 2 is a massive upgrade to the original game, so much so that it really should have been its own brand instead of "Number Two" of the 2005 release. Awesome single player campaigns, fantastic multiplayer support, and some unexpected treats specific to the unique features of the handheld. It absolutely trounces the first game in every category and finally gives the Nintendo DS the true Worms experience."

1UP -- 90%: "The first Open Warfare squashed the prolific series' typically sharp and colorful visuals into a fuzzy mess, and offered essentially one mode (skirmish). Open Warfare 2 simply blows it away with the first truly engaging Worms single-player campaign, an absolute bounty of customization options, the deep multiplayer we've come to expect from the series (with Wi-Fi this time), and even some entertaining DS-specific minigames. This is truly a Worms to be excited about, with portability that plays to the strengths of the series."
Metareview: Worms: Open Warfare 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 14:00:00 EST. No, we're more curious about how, exactly, one goes about making Worms into a console game again after its release in its $10 downloadable Xbox Live Arcade form.

Wii will have four-player online play, but XBLA already has that. There's also apparently a "fresh visual style," you'll have to ask Worms 3D how that worked out. Don't get us wrong, we love Worms, we're just curious how they'll make it seem like a full-priced game again. If they pull it off, we'll be the first in line.
Worms going to space on Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 16:13:00 EST. A bunch of new Worms content hit Marketplace today. First off, outside of the game, there are a themes and gamer pictures for 150 and 100 MS Points, respectively. Inside the game, there is a Music Pack, which is free to download. On the pay side of things, for 150 MS Points a piece, Desert and Manhattan are available for the invertebrate internecion between you and your friends. That all being said, we got one report from X3F reader Tucker that the update broke his game, though no other such scenarios have come in, so be careful out there, San Diego.
Worms Music and Terrains crawl on Marketplace originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. They say good things come to those who wait, and that may be more true for Worms fans than most. It took a long time and a massive heap of internet rage before Worms finally made it onto Xbox Live Arcade, but it was worth the wait for purists. Said purists may now rejoice a second time, as the new downloadable content (DLC to the kids) will be available tomorrow on Xbox Live. There will be 3 new landscapes available. The Space Landscape (pictured above) is free, while the Hell and Jungle Landscapes will set you back 150 points each. Perhaps the most exciting news, 22 new voice banks will be available for free. Finally, our Angry Scottish, Redneck (presents!), and Irish worms can rise again.

Expect the new content to hit the ground <strike>running</strike> wriggling tomorrow.
New Worms content wriggles out tomorrow originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 May 2007 17:05:00 EST. Don't feel bad, it happens to everyone. You're blowing up annelids with a stick of dynamite or remote-controlled sheep, and you suddenly realize that you're just going through the motions. The visceral thrill is gone, it's just the same old ninja ropes attaching to the same old snow banks. Fear not, wormy warrior, a cure for your deja vu is coming tomorrow with three new landscapes for Worms on Xbox Live.

The first, the "Space" landscape seen above, is a freebie, but you'll have to drop 150 points ($1.87) for each of the other two: "Hell" and "Jungle." If you need to recover from all the spending of points, there's one more bit of free content: Twenty-two new packs of worm voices have been added. And yes, they include "Russian" and "DoubleOhSeven" meaning you can finally pit James Bond against Teddy KGB in the Worms arena ... the way God intended.
We know that Worms: Open Warfare 2 is coming to both Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. So, how are the two versions different? Well, both feature online (Infrastructure) play, but the PSP version will have a few features that Nintendo's handheld won't be able to offer. In an interview with IGN, director Martyn Brown revealed that the game will have additional leaderboards and the ability to share user-created levels with others.

"With the PSP version, each user can upload a number of their custom created landscapes to be stored on the game's server, and those landscapes can then be downloaded by other users at any time. The PSP version also has extended community features, enabling players to form clans and compete against other clans, as well as send messages to other players who are connected to the game server (aka WormNet)."

The PSP version will also have a few more customization options for Worms teams, and a "Time Attack" mode, "which are missions that see the player use the Ninja Rope, Parachute or Jetpack to race around a landscape, guiding their worm to an exit point in the shortest amount of time possible." We're excited to see Team 17 acknowledge the PSP's robust hardware capabilities and take advantage of it. When Worms: Open Warfare 2 comes later this year.
Next Worms game to have exclusive features on PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. Over at IGN, they got their hands on an early build of Team 17's upcoming sequel to the horribly-received Worms: Open Warfare. With Worms: Open Warfare 2, the developer is set to make right the mistakes of the first title, confirming that Wi-Fi gameplay will be included this time around (get ready for Game Night, you silly little worms) and changing the core team out that worked on the original for Two Tribes. IGN confirms that just about everything has been improved; graphics are better, gameplay is more smooth (including the ninja rope) and the sound is way more crisp.

What's most interesting, though, is the new "Laboratory" game type, which charges players with navigating a worm from one edge of the map to the other using a variety of the DS's unique features (blowing into the microphone etc.).
Not only does it feature Infrastructure play, it will offer a plethora of other features that will make it one of the most fully-featured online titles on our handheld. IGN's recent preview notes that "you can even create clans, text chat, track your online stats, share battlefields you've created in the level editor."

Of course, that's not all. Like Wipeout, the game will have a great deal of longevity thanks to its downloadable content. Players will be able to "download some of the classic maps from previous Worms games via the title's online capabilities." With all these new features, Open Warfare 2 looks like a substantial upgrade to the franchise's previous iteration.

Worms Open Warfare 2 gets serious about online originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 May 2007 17:45:00 EST. When we revealed yesterday that a sequel to Worms: Open Warfare would be gracing the DS, complete with Wi-Fi Connect compatible multiplayer, we didn't realize that there was a trailer somewhere out there on the internet. After navigating the vast sea of tubes that comprises said intertron, we finally found our destination. We hastily caught the massive trailer in our nets and wrestled it on board. Now that the chefs had time to prepare it, it's ready for you past the post break.
We do not know when, but there will come a day. And on this day, you will see millions of digital worms flying through the air, rocketing at the speed of information through the walls of your home. Do not be alarmed! You are not having coke-and-alcohol-fueled hallucination. (Note to Christian Slater: You are.) For the rest of you, this sight will herald the release of Worms: Open Warfare 2 on the DS and PSP, which THQ has announced will feature online multiplayer.

The company has dropped a handful of details about the next iteration of the venerable annelidic series, including new modes like Rope Race and the Firing Range. There's also some new weapons like the intriguingly named Buffalo of Lies and Holy Hand Grenades. (Three-decade old Monty Python gags FTW!) More good news: It's going to be 2D. Still not enough for you? Check out the video, if you have a strong stomach for flying digi-worms.
Next portable Worms playable online originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 22:27:00 EST. The sequel is set to relieve fans of the franchise of their worries about the last game, this time adding full-on Wi-Fi Connect compatibility for some sure to be fun multiplayer match-ups. The online component will support leaderboards and user-generated content such as custom maps, hats and even dances.

THQ also reveals that the game will feature a host of new gameplay modes, as well as 11 new weapons, which include some returning franchise favorites such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and Holy Hand Grenades. New game modes will include Rope Race, Puzzle and the requisite Campaign mode.
It has been confirmed that the Space Theme and Audio pack will be free for download, but we are not sure of the other pack's cost or if they will be free too. Also confirmed is a Worms gamer picture set and theme. But all this new content will be a long time coming, because Team 17 is currently putting their efforts into a patch that'll help make the game all the more sparkly. Speech, themes, and audio ... what more could a Worms fan want (other than every Worms weapon ever created)?
It's long been a staple of gaming and has seen a version on nearly every system to ever be birthed into the world. The PSP has already got Worms Open Warfare, but it's about to get even more. Eurogamer is saying that soon we'll be able to play Worms Open Warfare 2. While what changes would be in the sequel were not listed, the title was given a July release date. In the end though, as long as Worms Open Warfare 2 has the same addictive multiplayer, nothing else matters.

Worms fans rejoice, for an update to your favorite annelid warfare simulation is on the way. On his personal blog, Team17's Martyn "Spadge" Brown has detailed some of the new things we can expect in the update. The biggest fix should solve the problem of 4-player games crashing. A number of exploits should be fixed as well. Thanks to our friends at XBLArcade, we also know that AI players will now take a maximum of 2 seconds to "think." Blessedly, the AI will no longer perform ridiculously accurate grenade shots either.

In addition to the update, plenty of downloadable content is on the way. The content is set to include a new theme (we think Spadge is referring to a level background, not a dashboard theme), audio that was cut because of the 50MB limit, lots of new voice banks (angry Scots FTW!), and some new themes and gamer pics. A release date has not yet been set for the update or downloadable content, so for now we'll slap the dreaded "coming soon(R)" sticker on it.
Fanboys, the day has finally arrived and Worms has hit Xbox Live Arcade for 800 MS Points. Complete with Xbox Live multiplayer for one to four players, this looks to become an instant classic. The 12 available Achievements don't look too shabby either, with our favorites being "Greedy Worm" and "Shepherd". Also, now that the game in question is released, the celebrity deathmatch between the 360Arcadians and the X3F team can finally be scheduled. So, the real question everyone wants to know is when is Castlevania coming out?
Worms HD wiggles onto Arcade originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Mar 2007 10:00:00 EST.
