A revolution, a radical change, a momentous shift. The game that will, as the marketing blurb puts it, bring classic Worms gameplay "squarely into the 21st century." Let's just settle this right now: <em>Worms Revolution</em> does not radically alter or change the traditional Worms formula in any fundamental way.<br /><br />In truth, though, does anyone really want it to?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/">Worms Revolution</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/#5127495"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/wormsrevdevdiary1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/#5127497"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/wormsrevdevdiary1-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/#5378241"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wormsrevolution-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/#5378242"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wormsrevolution-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-revolution/#5378243"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wormsrevolution-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/22/worms-revolution-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Worms Revolution review: Wriggling in circles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/22/worms-revolution-review/">Worms Revolution review: Wriggling in circles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 15:30:00 EST. Developer Team 17 revealed the news on the <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/07/23/worms-revolution-takes-to-the-battlefield-this-october/">EU PlayStation Blog</a>, noting that <em>Worms Revolution</em> will launch on October 10 for &pound;9.99/&euro;12.99. For those who haven't been following the game, <em>Worms Revolution</em> is built with a brand new engine and adds dynamic water and different worm classes to the traditional Worms formula.<br /><br />Unsurprisingly, the post doesn't mention the release date for the PC or Xbox Live Arcade version - or the North American PSN release date, for that matter - though they will presumably arrive on or near the same date. We've reached out to Team 17 to see if we can suss out release dates on all platforms.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/worms-revolution-gets-classy-this-october/">Worms Revolution gets classy this October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 12:30:00 EST. But with a renewed mobile push at Activision, the publisher is now looking to build a new studio across the Atlantic - and Team17 co-founder Martyn Brown is in charge of building said studio.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/40861/Activision-plans-UK-rebirth-with-games-dev-studio">Develop</a> confirmed the news with Activision, who only allowed this vague statement: "We are investing in mobile initiatives and that includes a UK studio." He left the game industry fourteen years ago, according to Team17; we're guessing to pursue other interests like fishing and gardening.<br /><br />And now he's back at the company, where he will "offer the <em>Worms Revolution</em> developers his support." So he's not heading up <em>Worms</em> development just yet. In fact, the announcement notes that he's working on a "variety of new game ideas."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/worms-creator-davidson-rejoins-team17-after-14-year-absence/">Worms creator Davidson rejoins Team17 after 14-year absence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. Good news for <em>Worms</em> fans this week, as Team 17 has revealed new downloadable content packs for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/worms-reloaded"><em>Worms: Reloaded</em></a> on PC. Altogether, there are four packs to be had, including the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22631/">Puzzle</a>, <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22632/">Forts</a>, <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22633/">Time Attack</a> and <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22634/">Retro</a> packs. Each pack includes new single-player missions, hats, gravestones, speech banks, landscape themes, and achievements. For a "limited time," each DLC pack costs $4.24 apiece, 15 percent off the usual price.<br />
<br />
A note for Mac users: the DLC is only compatible with the PC version of <em>Worms: Reloaded</em>. Team17 tells Joystiq that work began on the DLC "quite a long time ago when the game was solely a PC title," and thus the packs are incompatible with the Mac version. Team17 currently has no plans to bring the DLC to the Mac version, but will "see what happens."<br />
<br />
In addition to the new DLC, the full <em>Worms: Reloaded</em> game is part of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/steam-summer-camp-sale-is-ready-for-all-your-money/">Steam Summer Camp Sale</a>. It can currently be purchased <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22600/">for $10</a>, half the normal price.<br />

<em>Worms 2: Armageddon</em> for iOS devices will be $1 for a "limited time." The "Battle Pack," an in-app expansion, which adds more weapons and a new single-player campaign, has also been reduced to $1. The game and add-on are normally $5 and $2, respectively.<br />

For a bunch of soil-slithering invertebrates, the <em>Worms</em> are sure getting around in the news this week. On Monday, <em>Worms: Ultimate Mayhem</em> was rated by the Australian Classification Board, though no official details have followed yet.<br />

A boxed compilation of Team17's recent downloadable <em>Alien Breed</em> games will soon make its way to retail. Entitled <em>Alien Breed Trilogy</em>, the game bundles together <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed: Evolution</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alien-breed-2-assault"><em>Alien Breed 2: Assault</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alien-breed-3-descent"><em>Alien Breed 3: Descent</em></a> into a single package for the Xbox 360. No price has been announced, though it seems likely it will be at or below the $30 combined asking price for the individual games on Xbox Live Arcade. <em>Alien Breed Trilogy</em> is scheduled to arrive March 18.<br />
<br />
All three games are currently available for individual download on PSN, PC and Xbox Live Arcade.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/26/alien-breed-trilogy-headed-to-retail-on-xbox-360-march-18/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alien Breed Trilogy headed to retail on Xbox 360 March 18</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/26/alien-breed-trilogy-headed-to-retail-on-xbox-360-march-18/">Alien Breed Trilogy headed to retail on Xbox 360 March 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 04:00:00 EST. Don't worry, it's just a name -- these games are actually developed by a team of humans, not cultivated in some kind of game breeding operation.<br />
<br />
It comes to PS3 as a downloadable PSN game, with the same $9.99 price point as the Xbox release, and includes 35 Trophies, one of which is a Platinum. If you'd like to catch up before Descent, the first two <em>Alien Breeds</em> are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/psn-tuesday-back-to-the-future-yakuza-4-demo/">on sale</a> on PSN this week.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/alien-breed-3-propagates-to-psn-next-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alien Breed 3 propagates to PSN next week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/alien-breed-3-propagates-to-psn-next-week/">Alien Breed 3 propagates to PSN next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 12:40:00 EST. After two decades at the helm of annelid annihilators <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team-17">Team17</a>, Martyn Brown has left the Worms developer to work as an independent video game consultant, according to a post on his (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/Spadge">private</a>) Facebook page, as noted by <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-04-martyn-brown-quits-worms-dev-team17">Eurogamer</a>. Brown co-founded Team17, which got its start developing games for the Amiga (before your time?).<br />
<br />
"I had an amazing 20-year ride and whilst it's the end of a truly enjoyable period of my life, it equally signals the start of a really exciting new one," Brown posted before swinging away on a grappling hook, throwing a grenade, falling on that grenade and blowing himself up.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/04/martyn-brown-quits-team17-after-20-years/">Martyn Brown quits Team17 after 20 years</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 16:00:00 EST. In case your iPhone, Xbox, PS3 and PC didn't provide enough recent opportunities to play <em>Worms</em> games, you can now look forward to playing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/worms-battle-islands">Worms: Battle Islands</a> </em>on PlayStation Portable and Wii. Aside from a single-player campaign, <em>Battle Islands</em> adds a new weapon customization utility and the ability to alter the look of individual worms to an even greater extent.<br />
<br />
The PSP version will be arriving via the PlayStation Network and comes packed with an all new "Tactics Mode," where players use one of the game's 16 "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#/16">secret island bases</a>" to gain "a tactical advantage for the player to use at the beginning of a game" -- some examples given are "recon a battlefield before the war commences" and "snipe an enemy worm to gain the upper hand." If you explode (or drown, snipe, dismember, <em>etc</em>.) your online opponents fast enough, you'll earn one of their secret base's items.<br />
<br />
Both Wii and PSP versions will have online multiplayer and the new secret island base feature (only the PSP has "Tactics Mode"). Though we're sure to see these additions in forthcoming <em>Worms</em> titles, they'll be featured first in <em>Worms: Battle Islands</em> when it comes out this November.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/">Worms: Battle Islands (PSP/Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#3395510"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/wbiwii1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#3395511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/wbiwii2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#3395512"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/wbiwii3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#3395514"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/wbiwii4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/worms-battle-islands-psp-wii/#3395517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/wormsbattleislandspsp01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/worms-battle-islands-squirming-to-psp-wii/">Worms: Battle Islands squirming to PSP, Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 20:30:00 EST. This morning, Team17 announced the forthcoming Steam/XBLA release of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alien-breed-2-assault">Alien Breed 2: Assault</a></em>, the followup to last year's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alien-breed-impact">Alien Breed: Impact</a></em>. Adding to the single-player and co-op campaigns this time around is a new "Survivor Mode," which has players <em>assaulting</em> "endless waves of intense alien horde attacks." The developer also promises a new species to brutally murder en masse: "Webber" aliens.<br />
<br />
Picking up the game on XBLA nets players some "exclusive" Avatar award items in a "Barnes" helmet and body armor, each of which must be earned through game objectives ("killing a set number of aliens" and finishing the single-player campaign, respectively). The title arrives this Wednesday on both XBLA and Steam.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/">Alien Breed 2: Assault</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/#3381298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alienbreed2assaultscreen01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/#3381299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alienbreed2assaultscreen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/#3381301"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alienbreed2assaultscreen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/#3381302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alienbreed2assaultscreen04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alien-breed-2-assault/#3381303"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alienbreed2assaultscreen05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/alien-breed-2-assault-launching-this-wednesday/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alien Breed 2: Assault launching this Wednesday</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/alien-breed-2-assault-launching-this-wednesday/">Alien Breed 2: Assault launching this Wednesday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. Having released only two boxed retail games in the past three years, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms"><em>Worms</em></a> developer Team17 has been working toward total independence from third-party publishers. That moment has arrived for the studio, which has repositioned itself as an independent digital publisher, reports <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/40658/Team-17-breaks-ties-with-publishers">MCV</a>. "We have no ambitions to return to retail publishing," co-founder Martyn Brown told the site.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team17|team-17">Team17</a> has completed a restructuring initiative, which has both promoted existing staff and brought in new hires to fill the roles of a publishing entity. In addition to continuing to self-publish its own titles through digital distribution channels -- having celebrated its 20th anniversary last December, Team17 is one of the oldest independent developers in the industry -- the company will be working with other independent developers to bring their games to digital platforms, including XBLA, PSN and the App Store.<br />
<br />
"We are actively involved in working with other independent studios to publish their IP. This is a key aspect of our strategy going forward," Brown said. "We now have the right structure and team in place to accomplish this."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/30/team17-wriggles-free-from-third-party-publishers/">Team17 wriggles free from third-party publishers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 11:25:00 EST. Team17 has revealed that <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-impact">Alien Breed: Impact</a>,</em> the expanded version of <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution">Alien Breed: Evolution</a>,</em> will be released on Steam in June 3. The game will sell for $14.99 in the US, &pound;12.99 in the UK, and either &euro;11.25 or &euro;14.99 in other regions of Europe. Those who pre-order will receive a 10 percent discount as well as "an exclusive in-game digital comic, chronicling the troubled back-story of the game's hero, Conrad, the doomed space vessel's Chief Engineer."<br />
<br />
To help you make that purchasing decision, Team17 has released an <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/22610"><em>Alien Breed: Impact</em> demo</a>, which includes single-player and online co-op. Team17 Software, best known for its <em>Worms</em> games, is bringing an expanded version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed: Evolution</em></a> to PC and PS3 this summer. <em>Alien Breed: Impact</em> takes the original XBLA game and adds "suggestions from the community," such as weapons upgrades, increased difficulty, and a new "Prologue" campaign for newcomers to the franchise.<br />
<br />
Like its predecessor, the top-down shooter is powered by Unreal Engine 3, and will be distributed digitally via Steam and PlayStation Network. Expect both versions of <em>Impact</em> to arrive this summer.<br />

<a href="http://steamcommunity.com/games/wormsreloaded/announcements/detail/199457111706896973">News from the Steam Community</a> tells us that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms-reloaded"><em>Worms Reloaded</em></a>, that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/worms-reloaded-is-an-extended-edition-of-xbla-psn-versions/">new "extended" version</a> of the old game in which sentient invertebrates do battle with rockets and/or sheep, is moving up to a worldwide beta. Previously, the game was only available for testing in Europe, but it's opening it up globally on Monday, so children of all nations will be able to throw airstrikes and ninja ropes at each other then.<br />
<br />
The only catch? You need a key, and they've only got a few. So you'll just have to hope you come up when they spin the random numbers around. We do know that you have to be a member of <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/games/wormsreloaded">the official group</a>, so sign in over there right now ... and then begins the waiting game.<br />

Remember that "new" edition of <em>Worms</em> that Team 17<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/new-2d-worms-game-squirming-its-way-to-steam/"> announced for Steam</a>? It turns out that it may not be that "new" after all, which isn't a bad thing. <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/02/24/worms-reloaded-and-pc-worms-2-armageddon-one-and-the-same/">Big Download</a> did a little sleuthing and discovered that the game is actually based on the recent versions that have appeared on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Specifically, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/Team17Software?v=wall&amp;ref=nf">Team 17's Facebook page</a> notes that <em>Worms Reloaded</em> will be "an extended edition of the console versions of late." Again, however, the studio leaves any other details to your expansive imagination.<br />
<br />
In other words, it's time to start arguing about why it's <em>absolutely essential</em> that <em>Reloaded</em> includes your favorite weapon. Not your <em>stupid best friend's</em> favorite weapon though. That thing totally <em>ruins</em> the game, <em>Stephen</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/worms-reloaded-is-an-extended-edition-of-xbla-psn-versions/">Worms Reloaded is 'an extended edition' of XBLA, PSN versions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 23:29:00 EST. A recent <a href="http://twitter.com/team17/status/9481400917">tweet from Team 17's</a> Martyn Brown has revealed that everyone's favorite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms">combative invertebrates</a> will soon star in a new 2D outing on Steam, titled <em>Worms Reloaded</em>. That's literally <em>all</em> we know about the game at the moment, though Brown's tweet promises more details soon. Until then, we're left to worry that it's going to be an all-annelid remake of <em>The Matrix: Reloaded</em>, which would be totally awesome, until, of course, the <em>big rave/orgy scene</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/new-2d-worms-game-squirming-its-way-to-steam/">New 2D Worms game squirming its way to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. Having already dated the timed-exclusive XBLA debut of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed Evolution</em></a> -- it will land on <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/alien-breed-evolution-evolves-on-xbla-dec-16/">December 16</a> -- Team17 has told <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/xbox-360/news/alien-breed-xbox-exclusive.html">GamerZines</a> when PC and PS3 owners can expect the game. According to Team17's Mark Baldwin, <em>Alien Breed Evolution</em> will hit PCs sometime in the first quarter of 2009, while the PS3 version will arrive in the second quarter. Elaborating, Baldwin said the PC version should be available "sometime before March." Meanwhile, PS3 owners "will have to wait as long as perhaps June."<br />
<br />
Team17 has previously stated that exclusivity is "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/team17-head-timed-exclusivity-is-just-the-way-the-world-works/">just the way the world works</a>," noting that Microsoft had a lot of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/microsofts-early-faith-in-team-17-is-why-alien-breed-hits-xbla/">early faith</a> in the title. Team17 revealed earlier this year that each episode would contain a prologue and five full levels, lasting roughly five to eight hours altogether. We've all felt the pain of pressing the jump button a second time just barely too late in a game of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms-2"><em>Worms 2</em></a>, sending a brave worm soldier free falling off the side of a mountain or, worse yet, into the watery depths below. Recognizing that the game might have some issues - and rather than simply calling us "newbs" like most people do - <em>Worms 2</em> developers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team17">Team17</a> have just released a patch aimed at ailing all that is wrong with the adorable multiplayer strategy games.<br />
<br />
Listing everything from "Back flip input slowed down to stop incorrect jumps harming the player" to "Fixed bug which made crates in Forts matches only land on the right hand side," as well as a slurry of other fixes, Team17 seems to have given the nearly five-month-old release a full overhaul. An overhaul that'll perhaps feel all the more worthwhile when the developers make good on next year's DLC for the game. In the meantime, we'll be over here waiting for you with a Buffalo of Lies.<br />

At the Eurogamer Expo -- in <em>Europe!</em> -- Team17 has <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/team17-reveals-alien-breed-structure">revealed</a> its plans for the episodic structure of its upcoming downloadable title, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed Evolution</em></a>. It was previously revealed that the game would be released in three separate episodes, and now Team17's John Dennis explains that each episode will contain a prologue and five levels that are "much larger than they should have been." In addition, each episode contains two major "set pieces" -- large scripted events -- as well as two boss battles and a multiplayer level. Each episode should last five to eight hours.<br />
<br />
The first episode of <em>Alien Breed Evoluation</em> should release fairly soon, as it was originally slated for "around October." The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/XBLA/">XBLA</a> version will enjoy an unknown <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/microsofts-early-faith-in-team-17-is-why-alien-breed-hits-xbla/">period of exclusivity</a> before the PSN and PC versions are released.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/team17-details-alien-breed-episodes-structure/">Team17 details Alien Breed episodes structure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. There isn't a whole lot to say about my six or so hours spent with <em>Worms</em>, and as such, this won't be one of the longer iPhone game reviews you read anytime soon. In fact, if you've played past <em>Worms</em> games, then you're going to find some pretty glaring issues to complain about here and not much of anything new. <br />
<br />
The game looks great, has tons of content (near equivalent to the recent XBLA release, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms-2-armageddon"><em>Worms 2: Armageddon</em></a>), and doesn't cost a whole lot of money ($5). There are, however, a handful of niggling complaints that could be made about the lack of precision control necessary for a time-based game, as well as long load times strewn throughout the game's menus. Unfortunately, these little issues add up to a much bigger one -- they make me not want to play the game.<br />

"I appreciate PS3 owners getting pissed off because it's not on their platform immediately, but that's up to Sony I guess to address that," Team17 studio head Martyn Brown said in a recent interview with <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/team17_boss_calls_bribed_by_ms_accusation_bollocks.html">VideoGamer.com</a>. According to Brown, exclusivity is just a fact of life. "People on Live Arcade can't play <em>Super Stardust</em> [<em>HD</em>] or <em>PAIN</em> or a bunch of titles ... it's just the way the world works really." he added. Addressing concerns that his company was paid off by Microsoft for the timed exclusivity of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed Evolution</em></a> on XBLA, Brown answered ... "bollocks" (British for "nonsense"). Instead, Brown <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/microsofts-early-faith-in-team-17-is-why-alien-breed-hits-xbla/">credited</a> the exclusivity deal to "early faith" from the publisher.<br />
<br />
Specifically, Brown stated, "In exchange for exclusivity we get a lot more promotion ... it isn't the case of here's some cash in a suitcase, It just doesn't work like that -- It would be nice if it did!" No suitcases full of bank notes, Mr. Brown? Oh, that's right, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/usa-today-gta-iv-dlc-named-detailed-dated/"><em>GTA IV</em>'s exclusive DLC</a> used up all of Microsoft's petty cash for a bit. Sorry, guy!<br />

Team 17's Martyn Brown believes the barriers to self-publishing on Xbox Live Arcade are becoming more difficult to break through. The studio director tells <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/xbla-publishing-massively-harder-now-brown">GI.biz</a> that it's "massively" harder to get games on XBLA now, saying that there just aren't "many gaps in the portfolio" and the top sellers are mostly established IPs -- like his company's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Worms/">Worms</a></em> games.<br />
<br />
Brown believes that new developers without established connections need to make titles that cater to the platforms. He expresses that Sony "tends to like the new stuff" that isn't necessarily mass market, while with Microsoft "you're really going for the commercial mass market audience." The takeaway from this is that as digital distribution goes from being the new frontier to becoming the norm, it's going to have similar issues as current brick-and-mortar retailers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/15/team-17-xbla-publishing-is-much-harder-now/">Team17: XBLA publishing is much harder now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 19:00:00 EST. Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton, England today, Team17 leader Martyn Brown described his studio's forthcoming digital release, <em>Alien Breed Evolution,</em> as a trilogy -- "one of the most expensive digital titles to-date," too -- according to <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/alien-breed-trilogy-cost-USD2-5-million-to-make">GamesIndustry.biz</a>. Said to be costing in the realm of $2.5 million to develop, Team17's Unreal remake of its Amiga shooter will be distributed in three parts, spanning an estimated 15 hours of gameplay. The first "episode" will include three, one-hour levels and an additional three-hour, co-op scenario, and is scheduled to hatch on Xbox Live Arcade around October and destined for PSN at a later date, confirmed <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/07/14/alien-breed-trilogy-ps3-version-coming-later/">VG247</a>.<br />
<br />
The underlying message of Brown's presentation, titled "10 Things Nobody Tells You About Digital Distribution and Self-publishing That You Must Understand to Succeed," seemed to be one of caution, as summarized by <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24415">Gamasutra</a>. Brown dispelled much of the get-rich-quick myth of independent, digital development -- <em>and</em> publishing. Sure, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/indie-iphone-dev-makes-half-a-mil-we-question-our-career-choice/">one</a> in a billion basement programmers might strike gold, but to enjoy lasting success, as Team17 has for nearly two decades, expect to <em>spend</em> money to make money and employ a staff with a "wide variety of skills" (a team of 30 or so is currently working on <em>Alien Breed</em>, for example). Brown warned, "if you don't know something, get someone who does, because you will not be able to wing it." <br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: It's coming to <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/07/16/alien-breed-evolution-confirmed-for-pc-but-not-for-a-while/">PC too</a>.<br />

Developer Team17 <em>loves</em> its <a href="http://www.facebook.com/Team17Software?v=wall&amp;viewas=682850551">Facebook page</a>. This morning the company announced a "retro modern remake" of <em>Alien Breed</em>, one of its games from way back in 1991. <em>Alien Breed Evolution</em> is an Unreal Engine 3-powered shooter, which can be played solo or co-op later this year. A representative for Team 17 tells us that a video of the game should be released in two to three weeks.<br />
<br />
Team17 also teased that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/rumor-video-shows-potential-worms-for-iphone/">iPhone <em>Worms</em></a> "looms... not long now." There is currently a tentative date, but the developer is awaiting the go from Apple. Like a good Worm, though, Team 17 has everything locked, loaded and ready to fire when ready.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/09/team-17-announces-alien-breed-evolution-teases-imminent-iphone/">Team17 announces Alien Breed Evolution, teases imminent iPhone Worms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 11:10:00 EST. Just shy of its official release on Xbox Live Arcade, Team17 has dropped plenty of details and a big ol' pile of screens for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms-2-armageddon"><em>Worms 2 Armageddon</em></a>, out tomorrow for 800<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> ($10). First up, there are <em>lots</em> of new weapons in <em>Worms 2</em>, some of them are brand new, while others are returning favorites from other installments in the series. Fans will be happy to know that the Concrete Donkey is back (as is his nemesis, the Buffalo of Lies[?]). The game also includes bunker buster bombs which, true to their name, are used to take out cowardly worms that have burrowed deep, deep out of harm's way.<br /><br />As we've mentioned before, the game also brings persistent fire, which is utilized in weapons like napalm and the petrol bomb. The game includes a handful of new modes too, such as Fort Mode -- which sets each team's worms in opposing bases instead of placing them randomly -- and Rope Race Mode. Another addition that might not sound too sexy but, trust us, it's important: Host migration for network play. The game also introduces vertical levels, which are tall and narrow, as opposed to the traditional wide levels.<br /><br />All in all, it sounds like <em>Worms 2 Armageddon</em> is packing plenty of punch. Check out new screens in the gallery below and two trailers after the break.<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/worms-2-details-new-screens-fresh-out-of-the-can/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Worms 2 details, new screens fresh out of the can</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/worms-2-details-new-screens-fresh-out-of-the-can/">Worms 2 details, new screens fresh out of the can</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 17:15:00 EST. A video posted over at <a href="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Worms+(iPhone)/video.asp?c=12948">Pocket Gamer</a> seems to show off a very early build of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/worms"><em>Worms</em></a> for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=iphone">iPhone</a>. The video is pretty brief, though it still manages to impress us through some slick visuals and competent controls. Whether or not this is real, know that we <em>want </em>it to be real. <br />

We've put in word to both Team17 and EA's mobile division (which was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/rumor-ea-may-obtain-worms-mobile-license/">rumored</a> to have acquired the license). EA got back to us to say that the company "does not comment on rumor and speculation." While we wait on Team17, you can head past the break and watch poor Harlequin catch a rocket to the face.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>We've spoken with a source at Team17 that has confirmed the video past the break is authentic and something the team produced in-house, choosing to sneakily unload it onto the 'nets, rather than send Joystiq a press release. Our contact said that Team17 has actually moved to self-publish games in the digital distribution space, so it no longer needs to rely on partners get its products out there. So, in short: <em>Worms</em> on the iPhone is real, Team17 is doing everything, and there isn't any planned release date as of right now.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/rumor-video-shows-potential-worms-for-iphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Team17 working on Worms for iPhone [Update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/rumor-video-shows-potential-worms-for-iphone/">Team17 working on Worms for iPhone [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST.
