Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!?

That's the one about the hidden Guilty Gear character spinning on a bar of soap and defending himself with towel snaps on the way to soothing hot springs. Nope, we don't know how this is real either.

2K Sports today announced that Top Spin 4 is coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in 2011. The next iteration in the tennis sim franchise will feature 25 top pros and legends, headlined by a young Andre Agassi -- the one with the rad hairpiece. Vintage Agassi will be offered as a pre-order bonus for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game purchased from GameStop.

While neither Move nor Kinect support was confirmed in the announcement, the "exhilarating" Top Spin 4 is said to feature "an uncanny level of realism" and "all-new innovative controls," according to 2K Games' president of product development Greg Thomas. Who knows -- maybe that means they just swapped the slice and lob buttons?

Everyone now knows the methods of avoiding Wiimote accidents during their exuberant Wii Sports bouts, we thought. The Home Shopping Network recently proved the inaccuracy of this observation.

The hilarity unfolds in the video after the jump. While some might grimace at the fate of the poor television featured in the video, remember that they're charging $330 for a Wii and 15 completely unnecessary controller attachments. Call it an accident, if you'd like -- we call it Karma in action.

This delay is even more alarming than the constant movement of games out of this year and into Spring 2010, because, according to a statement given to Kotaku, Grand Slam Tennis has been "delayed indefinitely." The EA Sports rep assured that the game would actually come out.

The delay, according to Moore, is the result of EA Sports staff being diverted from the tennis game in order to get the EA Sports Active expansion out by the holidays. As of right now, the only way to play Grand Slam Tennis is to get a Wii, which also lets you experience EA Sports Active and its upcoming expansion. How devious.

We previously speculated about just such a delay, noting that retailers had the title scheduled for June 2. According to Sega blogger RubyEclipse, "I believe the focus is on polishing up the Wii version, so I'm down for that as it means a better game in the end."

Later in the message board thread, RubyEclipse says, "Right now the goal is still June 2nd," but suggests that a further delay of a week or two is possible. That would mean that the Wii version would come out at the same time as the MotionPlus peripheral, and not a week before as currently planned.

Electronic Arts is totally serious about including ill-tempered tennis legend John McEnroe in EA Sports' upcoming Wii release, Grand Slam Tennis. According to EA, McEnroe will be just one of several "all-time greats" in the upcoming title, which is expected to take to the court on June 16.

Hopefully EA will package more than just McEnroe's likeness with the game. We can't think of a better use of the promised MotionPlus support than mirroring his juvenile antics on screen as we toss our Wii remote aside in disgust when calls don't go our way.

EA is determined to release its new crop of sports game, whether or not Nintendo has released the Wii MotionPlus peripheral or not. As you may recall, EA revealed the next Tiger Woods game would feature MotionPlus support, as well as a new tennis game the company is developing, and both will ship to retail on June 16, 2009. EA Sports' PR chief, David Tinson, said that both games "will be compatible, but not dependent, on WMP. They will ship with the functionality, regardless of when WMP comes to market."

The peripheral is a tie-in with Wii Sports Resort, a game that was woefully absent from Nintendo's big release list yesterday. Will MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort be on store shelves by June 16? Nintendo has yet to comment on an exact release for the Wii Sports successor, but we'll be sure to update you as soon as we hear.

When Sega announced nine days ago that they'd be releasing another installment in their decade-old tennis franchise, aptly titled Virtua Tennis 2009, we thought they'd made a typo when revealing the systems the game would be gracing. You're telling us that a sport whose main interactive mechanic involves the deft swinging of a handheld object isn't getting the Wii treatment? Sega, are you pot-high?

The fog of confusion has apparently lifted -- in a recent press release, Sega revealed that Virtua Tennis 2009 will, in fact, be coming to the Wii, bringing with it the roster and features from the 360, PS3 and PC versions of the title. These features include online play, and casual "Court Games" minigames that should go over swimmingly at Wii-based family functions. Sega has announced a 2009 installment in its Virtua Tennis series ... called Virtua Tennis 2009. We thought it was pretty clever.

Set to grace the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this May, Virtua Tennis 2009 offers the expected singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches, along with the series' trademark World Tour mode (now complete with online leaderboards). You can also expect to take several real-life tennis stars through "Court Games," minigames said to feature "crocodiles, fruit and pirates." If that isn't tennis, we don't know what is.

Over at the official site for the Wii de Asobu (Play on Wii, or NEW PLAY CONTROL!) series, there's a pair of Japanese commercials for the Mario Power Tennis remake, as well as a far lengthier gameplay trailer.

The adverts we can take or leave, consisting as they do of the usual telegenic Japanese families bouncing around their pristine living rooms. The gameplay clip is worth watching, as it displays the various shots that can be achieved through a well-timed flick of the wrist (top-spin, side-spin, slices, drop shots, etc.). We hope mixing up our shots actually has an effect on the game, because we always found Wii Sports tennis to be not-quite-as-advertised in this respect (though we're willing to accept we just may be rubbish at Wii Sports tennis).

Oh yes, and these are non-embeddable, so you'll have to go to the site to watch them. And they call this 2009!

We didn't really need help to figure out that Play on Wii Mario Tennis GC (or Mario Power Tennis, as Camelot's mascot tennis game is known over here) would use Wiimote motion controls, since that is, like one hundred percent of the point of the Play on Wii series (and Wii tennis games, for that matter). But we welcome solid information anyway, which Japanese online retailer Neowing has provided.

According to the product description, Mario Tennis GC enables players to wave the Wii Remote to execute forehand and backhand shots and direct the ball toward the left or right side of the court. Motion will also determine the addition of topspin and slice spin. Buttons are still used to deploy each character's unique special moves.

If the (possible) second coming of Wii Sports tennis doesn't excite you, hang on to your GameCube version: Play on Wii Mario Tennis GC does not support GameCube controllers.

For those of you who're fans of tennis, rejoice. EA is poised to present their own tennis title. And, as if that wasn't enough, it will take advantage of Nintendo's new MotionPlus peripheral, joining Ubisoft in proclaiming it's totally awesome. EA also mentions that this will be the first tennis game to include the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which is where Wimbledon is played.

With all the recent announcements and pick-ups, you'd think EA would be bursting at the seams with upcoming titles, but it's just crammed one more under its belt: A new tennis franchise that will debut on Wii (though it will later come to other platforms) and take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus accessory.

Besides the control gimmick innovation, its other claim to fame is being the only video game that includes the All England Lawn Tennis Club, where Wimbledon is played. So, with tennis added to the list, what's left for EA Sports? Curling? Cup stacking?

The team behind the Wii version of Top Spin 3 was not exactly working in an enviable position. It seems a little funny to call a pack-in game a juggernaut, but that's exactly what Wii Sports is, and any game that sets out to deliver a realistic sports experience to Wii owners is up against that suprisingly excellent set of mini-games. Every tennis game, realistic or not, on the system is going to be compared -- probably unfavorably -- with a game that was free, and that's got to chafe.

Unfortunately, it looks like someone was all too aware of that inevitable comparison, and worried besides, as Top Spin 3 tries too hard to be too many things to too many people. Not only did PAM Development and 2K Sports strive to create a top notch tennis simulation, they also tried to make it easy to pick up and play ... and the two don't exactly go hand in hand when it comes to a deep sports game.

Two Game Boy Advance games have randomly appeared in the Stars Catalogue, leading us to surmise that Nintendo has been spring-cleaning its warehouses and found a bunch of old, unsold stock. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Mario Power Tennis are both decent purchases, we suppose, even if the price (5000 Stars each) is steep (you'd need to buy at least 20 DS games to amass that many Stars). We're still waiting on the warehouse with all the sealed Super Famicom consoles to get cleared out (it must exist somewhere).

Some other new tat has also been added, including a Pokémon sports bag, and three further items that have (inexplicably) sold out: a Raving Rabbids T-shirt, a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon bookmark, and a Brain Training pen. Don't all rush at once, please.

Thwock goes the tennis ball, and the crowd goes wild! Tennis fans should be automatically impressed with the graphical quality displayed in Top Spin 3 for the DS, if only because some pour souls actually tried their hand at Tennis Masters.

Five new screens are ready for action in the gallery, and they certainly hold true to our original positive impression. Here's a tip - open the gallery, put a hat and sunglasses on, then pay some chump five bucks to hold up your monitor while running back in forth in front of you. It's just like being there! The upside of buying Top Spin 3 when it comes out? You'll have no more money left to waste on paying people to do stupid things.

The "hitting balls with stuff" genre has really taken off on the Wii. We've enjoyed light entertainment and small-scaled intensity, but now tennis overlord Top Spin 3 is coming out to play. Will it be awesome? The pedigree of Top Spin lends us to think so, but check out these new screens in the gallery and judge for yourself.

There's no official listing of the available control options, but a hefty wager can be placed on some kind of swinging motion being included. All bets must be placed before June 20 when the game hits the stores.

2K has released the first screens of the DS version of Top Spin 3, and we're pleased to say it looks pretty nice! We always feel surprised when a 3D game on the DS doesn't look awkward and jag-tastic.

We aren't sure how much of an audience there is for portable tennis, but with this relatively high-profile release, along with Tennis Elbow and the recently released Sega Superstars Tennis, there seems to be something for everyone (who wants to play tennis on the DS). Top Spin, of course, brings the series' pedigree and a stable of (3D models in the likenesses of) real tennis stars like Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Andy Roddick.

Despite our enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of Sega fanboys everywhere) over Sega Superstars Tennis, a release that drips with fan service, the game failed to inspire consumers to rush out and buy the game like they did with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games? Not enough Mario, perhaps? Or olympics?

Whatever the case, slow sales for the tennis title has given GameStop early cause to slash its prices for Sega Superstars Tennis across all platforms, and you can now buy the Wii game for as little as $19.99. It's a great bargain, considering the game was released only a month ago! You can order Sega Superstars Tennis through GameStop's online shop, but why not save a few bucks and pick it up at one of the retailer's local stores?

Sanuk Software, whose claim to fame (in our eyes) is the satirical Barnyard Blast, are now working on a tennis game for Europe, called Tennis Elbow, to be published by Neko Entertainment. With Barnyard Blast, we found the title interesting because Eric contributed to it; with this, the title is notable because it is an injury.

Tennis Elbow is still early (the weirdly identical screenshots look mocked-up), with no European release date yet. Sanuk promises 250 different opponents in 90 tournaments, in five different kinds of courts. With that many matches to play, your character is liable to suffer ... some kind of stress-related ailment.

What's with the "FAT" signs on the stands?

Sega and Sumo Digital may have served up a worthwhile tennis option for the Wii, but can the DS title rock the court? From the early reviews, it looks like the character roster is the best thing the handheld has going for it, though there are some solid gameplay mechanics buried beneath the fanservice.

IGN: 69% -- Solid, but too easy. Sega's decision to release Sega Superstars Tennis in March was a bold one: Many companies moved their releases out of the way of Nintendo's major offering -- and those games aren't competitive multiplayer games starring a cast of iconic video game company mascots from different games, battling on a variety of stages inspired by the games from whence the characters came.

No, we don't think Sega Superstars Tennis is a direct response to or an attempt to compete with Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- if it were, we wouldn't see Sonic in Nintendo's game. Sega Superstars Tennis is a smaller release, meant, we would guess, to bridge the gap between "casual gamers" and Sega superfans. Or, to be more cynical, to be a Virtua Tennis sequel without the likeness rights. Did Sega and Sumo Digital serve up an ace or a fault? Or is the game best analogized by some other tennis term? As huge fans of Nintendo, we often find ourselves being their harshest critics. One of the problems we've always had with the company was its lack of devotion to a competitive online arena, where gamers could do comparable things online with their Wii that the Xbox 360 and PS3 can do.

Why do we bring all of this up? Well, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will have the online play and it's missing from Nintendo platforms because of "time and development resource constraints." We just wonder what kind of constraints would allow them to include it into the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and not in the Wii version? Hey, we're willing to wait a little longer so long as what we're getting is a complete product and not the table scraps left from the other versions of Sega Superstars Tennis. Sure, we get the best control method (presumably), but is it worth it?

Regardless, we're still excited for the game. We just wish we could enjoy the game with you.

Sega just served up more footage of Sega Superstars Tennis, and all the ingredients are in place for one of the most quintessentially Sega experiences in years: cartoon monkeys called Amigo, blue skies, Ulala, and Sonic's horrible voice. Playing tennis to a rousing rendition of Samba de Janeiro, even in videogame form, feels a bit weird, but we strongly suspect we won't care!

Past the break: footage of Ulala playing on home territory. The resolution of the video isn't the best, but we're sure she plays a shot through her legs, a la Martina Navratilova!

GameTrailers has posted a handful of new Sega Superstars Tennis videos. It looks like Sega's new tennis title will come packed with various mini-games. The two latest videos show off both a ring collecting Sonic mini-game and a another -- the objective of which we can't quite discern -- based on ChuChu Rocket. The games look entertaining enough, but let's just hope the tennis is up to snuff. After all, mini-games are mini for a reason. Having said that, we pray that there's a Space Channel 5 dancing mini-game with "Space Michael."

We haven't seen much Samba de Amigo related media for Sega's upcoming tennis game, aside from a handful of screenshots. Fortunately, the Samba stage looks to be pretty great, if we do say so ourselves. The above trailer may be super short, but the stage seems to have all the elements of "awesome," like a cheetah band, good music, and bra-wearing cacti. It's nice to see some fun characters make a return from the original Dreamcast game -- we're sure our favorite maraca-playing monkey would be lonely without them.

Europe might not be able to Brawl with Sonic in March, but they can make the speedy blue hedgehog pick up a tennis racquet in Sega Superstars Tennis. Originally dated for March 28th, Eurogamer reports that the game won't take as long to hit European shores as we originally thought.

While the game's release was only bumped up eight days to March 20th, Europeans can rest assured that they're getting it only two days after us folks in America (compared to the usual gap, that's not so bad). Some of the staff at Nintendo Wii Fanboy are super hyped about this game for the Jet Set Radio references alone, so we hope those of you in Europe who feel the same way enjoy these good tidings. Unfortunately, once again you'll be forced to choose between motion controls and online play.

We're pleased to see that the bizarre Sega-history minigames are intact in the DS release of Sega Superstars Tennis. Here, Ulala, a dancing reporter from a satellite-based TV station in a retro-futuristic musical world, is taking a break from rescuing Michael Jackson from TV-faced aliens to play Space Harrier using a tennis racquet. So, you know, it's your basic tennis game.

And since we follow all Jet Set Radio-related developments eagerly, we'd like to point out that the second-best-known member of the GG's, Gum, is visible in these screenshots as a playable character. It remains to be seen if you have to jump on top of a car in order to convince her to join.

A lot of things happen at the Oscars, many predictable, and some unexpected, but there's one thing we don't usually expect to see: video games. It's a measure of just how out-of-control the Wii movement is that the console turned up at this year's awards as a joke unto itself that featured host Jon Stewart losing his dignity in a game of Wii Sports tennis to young songstress Jamia Simone Nash of nominated film August Rush.

It's not the first time the Comedy Central "anchors" have exploited the Wii for humorous effect, but the Daily Show's host seemed to need a little more practice with the sports simulation. Rarely has a single game been associated with a console as much as the Wii's pack-in, Wii Sports, has with the Wii. It's so strongly identified that "playing Wii" is often shorthand for "playing Wii Sports." With pretty much every Wii owner obsessed to a degree with Wii Sports tennis, do we need more tennis games? Is it a matter of a popular game creating a market, or are more tennis games on the Wii redundant?

The game full of glorified demos turned out to be a gem, and even if everything had been nixed except for Wii Tennis, this blogger would have been happy with it.

That's why we're excited about Top Spin 3 for Wii. Although 2K didn't make note of motion controls for the Wii version in the press release, we'll assume the game will have them (2K would be daft not to take advantage of the Wiimote). After how fun Wii Tennis was, we could only imagine that a game completely devoted to tennis would be even better.

That's not to say that Top Spin won't face fierce competition (namely with Sega Superstars Tennis.) We think there's a market for both games, though. Some people will want to play with beloved Sega characters, while others might want to play with actual tennis stars. And, some folks might prefer a light-hearted title involving minigames, while others might want a true-blue tennis title. If Top Spin offers online play, that in itself might also be a draw for 2K's tennis over Sega's game, which lacks that vital feature.

Yet, we have to say that the list of playable pros is a little flat (where's recent Aussie Open champion, Novak Djokovic? And why is Rafael Nadal only playable in the PS3 version?). Of course, that's just us nitpicking, since we happen to be big tennis nerds.

Whatever you think of Sega's output since the Dreamcast bowed out of the industry, Sega titles have a history of containing outstanding minigames. Remember how you once skipped three days of university to ace every minigame in Crazy Taxi, or how you would turn down nights out with friends because you wanted to knock down giant skittles in Virtua Tennis? Well, probably not, because those are my memories, but you get the picture.

Anyway, Sega Superstars Tennis looks like it will resurrect this proud tradition of awesome minigames. They're full of very Sega-esque tasks, from collecting golden rings to fending off the living dead to guiding mice into rockets. All of which is enough to make us forgive the game's other imperfections, like the lack of online play, or NiGHTS' plainly ludicrous voice. For all of you looking for fast and furious Tennis action without the resulting elbow pain, look no further. 2K has announced that Top Spin 3, the latest iteration in their, you guess it, tennis franchise, will be gracing Nintendo systems. Development duties will be handled by PAM development, a 2K studio, and release is currently planned for spring 2008.
