We're still getting used to seeing new Nintendo downloadable games on Thursdays. It feels <em>weird</em>. While we spend the day dealing with that cognitive dissonance, you'll be able to visit the Wii, DSi, or 3DS shop and buy some new stuff, including a DSiWare version of the Stratego board game, a 3DS Virtual Console release of the Game Boy <em>Tennis</em> game, and ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/dsiwares-furo-jump-guilty-gear-gaiden-claims-the-weirdest-gui/"><em>Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!?</em></a><br />
<br />
That's the one about the hidden <em>Guilty Gear</em> character spinning on a bar of soap and defending himself with towel snaps on the way to soothing hot springs. Nope, we don't know how this is real either.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/nintendoware-weekly-stratego-pro-jumper/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Stratego, Pro Jumper!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/nintendoware-weekly-stratego-pro-jumper/">NintendoWare Weekly: Stratego, Pro Jumper!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 10:00:00 EST. 2K Sports today announced that <em>Top Spin 4</em> is coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in 2011. The next iteration in the tennis sim franchise will feature 25 top pros and legends, headlined by a young Andre Agassi -- the one with the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/6471369/Andre-Agassi-admits-long-hairstyle-was-a-wig.html">rad hairpiece</a>. Vintage Agassi will be offered as a pre-order bonus for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game purchased from GameStop.<br />
<br />
While neither <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move/">Move</a> nor <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect|project-natal">Kinect</a> support was confirmed in the announcement, the "exhilarating" <em>Top Spin 4</em> is said to feature "an uncanny level of realism" and "all-new innovative controls," according to 2K Games' president of product development Greg Thomas. Who knows -- maybe that means they just swapped the slice and lob buttons?<br />

We were certain -- <em>absolutely</em> certain -- that the epidemic of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrrvkPo7TZ4">fractured television screens</a> which cropped up with the release of the Wii had passed. Everyone's heard the horror stories, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/16/wii-related-injury-roundup/">seen the blackened eyes</a> and witnessed the ruined electronics, we thought. Everyone now knows the methods of avoiding Wiimote accidents during their exuberant <em>Wii Sports</em> bouts, we thought. The Home Shopping Network recently proved the inaccuracy of this observation.<br />
<br />
The hilarity unfolds in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a07W2t2wcRA#t=04m54s">the video after the jump</a>. While some might grimace at the fate of the poor television featured in the video, remember that they're charging $330 for a Wii and 15 completely unnecessary controller attachments. Call it an accident, if you'd like -- we call it Karma in action.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/18/hsn-teaches-valuable-lesson-about-wii-accessory-safety/">HSN teaches valuable lesson about Wii accessory safety</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Oct 2009 18:30:00 EST. This delay is even more alarming than the constant movement of games out of this year and into Spring 2010, because, according to a statement given to <a href="http://kotaku.com/5330042/ea-sports-active-so-successful-its-delaying-other-games">Kotaku</a>, <em>Grand Slam Tennis </em>has been "delayed indefinitely." The EA Sports rep assured that the game would actually come out.<br /><br />The delay, according to Moore, is the result of EA Sports staff being diverted from the tennis game in order to get the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/ea-sports-active-is-eas-best-selling-wii-game-ever/"><em>EA Sports Active</em></a> expansion out by the holidays. As of right now, the only way to play <em>Grand Slam Tennis</em> is to get a Wii, which <em>also</em> lets you experience <em>EA Sports Active</em> and its upcoming expansion. How <em>devious</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/hd-grand-slam-tennis-delayed-indefinitely-due-to-ea-sports-act/">HD Grand Slam Tennis 'delayed indefinitely' due to EA Sports Active</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. We previously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/ea-sports-motionplus-games-coming-out-a-week-early/">speculated</a> about <em>just</em> such a delay, noting that retailers had the title scheduled for June 2. According to Sega blogger <a href="http://boards2.sega.com/sega_board/viewtopic.php?t=104424">RubyEclipse</a>, "<span class="postbody">I believe the focus is on polishing up the Wii version, so I'm down for that as it means a better game in the end."<br /><br />Later in the message board thread, RubyEclipse says, "</span><span class="postbody">Right now the goal is still June 2nd," but suggests that a further delay of a week or two </span>is possible. That would mean that the Wii version would come out at the same time as the MotionPlus peripheral, and not a week <em>before</em> as currently planned.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/">Virtua Tennis 2009</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/#2000950"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/vt0507095_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/#2000951"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/vtps30507091_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/#2000952"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/vtwii0507091_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/#2000944"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/vtwii0507093_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/virtua-tennis-2009/#2000945"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/vtwii0507092_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=81599">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/virtua-tennis-2009-lobbed-into-june/">Virtua Tennis 2009 lobbed into June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 May 2009 10:44:00 EST. Electronic Arts is totally serious about including ill-tempered tennis legend John McEnroe in EA Sports' upcoming Wii release, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/joystiq-hands-on-ea-sports-grand-slam-tennis"><em>Grand Slam Tennis</em></a>. According to EA, McEnroe will be just one of several "all-time greats" in the upcoming title, which is expected to take to the court on June 16.<br /><br />Hopefully EA will package more than just McEnroe's likeness with the game. We can't think of a better use of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/wii-a-sports-tiger-woods-10-grand-slam-tennis-releasing-first/">promised MotionPlus support</a> than mirroring his juvenile antics on screen as we toss our Wii remote aside in disgust when calls don't go our way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/john-mcenroe-headlines-ea-sports-grand-slam-tennis/">John McEnroe headlines EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 14 Mar 2009 22:00:00 EST. EA is <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/02/27/ea-sports-motionplus-games-wont-wait-for-nintendo/">determined</a> to release its new crop of sports game, whether or not Nintendo has released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/motionplus">the Wii MotionPlus peripheral</a> or not. As you may recall, EA revealed the next <em>Tiger Woods</em> game would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/wii-a-sports-tiger-woods-10-grand-slam-tennis-releasing-first/">feature MotionPlus support</a>, as well as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/wii-a-sports-tiger-woods-10-grand-slam-tennis-releasing-first/">a new tennis game</a> the company is developing, and both will ship to retail on June 16, 2009. EA Sports' PR chief, David Tinson, said that both games "will be compatible, but not dependent, on WMP. They will ship with the functionality, regardless of when WMP comes to market."<br /><br />The peripheral is a tie-in with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-wii-fanboy-hands-on-with-wii-sports-resort/"><em>Wii Sports Resort</em></a>, a game that was woefully absent from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/nintendo-unveils-tons-of-dates-and-a-few-new-games/">Nintendo's big release list</a> yesterday. Will MotionPlus and<em> Wii Sports Resort </em>be on store shelves by June 16? Nintendo has yet to comment on an exact release for the <em>Wii Sports </em>successor, but we'll be sure to update you as soon as we hear.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/ea-not-waiting-on-nintendo-will-release-motionplus-compat-games/">EA not waiting on Nintendo, will release MotionPlus-compat games on time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 13:30:00 EST. Sega may be soon walking onto the court with an extra spring in its step, as <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/confirmed-sega-s-virtua-tennis-uses-wii-motionplus-532089">TechRadar UK</a> reports that the recently announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/14/virtua-tennis-2009-also-coming-to-wii/">Wii version of <em>Virtua Tennis 2009</em></a> will ship with support for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wii-MotionPlus/">WiiMotion Plus</a>. Citing an anonymous source, the site writes that the game will be among the first third-party titles to support the new controller tech, which promises to boost the Wii remote's sensitivity to motion. We remain interested in seeing what developers do with WiiMotion Plus once it's introduced, though <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> has yet to announce any plans for supporting the souped-up controls when <em>Virtua Tennis</em> hits a backspin for retail in May.<br /><br />As an aside, the rumor comes just as '80s tennis crybaby John McEnroe celebrates surviving half a century, his ball striking the white line of the Wii's target demographic. If any extra-sensitive waggle does make its way into <em>Virtua Tennis 2009</em>, we advise keeping your distance should McEnroe stop by for a quick <strike>tantrum</strike> game of doubles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/rumor-virtua-tennis-2009-for-wii-to-support-wiimotion-plus/">Rumor: Virtua Tennis 2009 for Wii to support WiiMotion Plus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 12:10:00 EST. When Sega <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/sega-serves-up-virtua-tennis-2009-this-may/">announced nine days ago that they'd be releasing</a> another installment in their decade-old tennis franchise, aptly titled <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Virtua%20Tennis%202009">Virtua Tennis 2009</a></em>, we thought they'd made a typo when revealing the systems the game would be gracing. You're telling us that a sport whose main interactive mechanic involves the deft swinging of a handheld object <em>isn't</em> getting the Wii treatment? Sega, <em>are you pot-high</em>?<br /><br />The fog of confusion has apparently lifted -- in a recent press release, <a href="http://www.sega.com/news/?n=3017">Sega revealed that <em>Virtua Tennis 2009</em> will, in fact, be coming to the Wii</a>, bringing with it the roster and features from the 360, PS3 and PC versions of the title. These features include online play, and casual "Court Games" minigames that should go over swimmingly at Wii-based family functions. It will also share the May release window with the other versions of the game, bringing it to store shelves just in time for tennis season, if such a thing actually exists.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/14/virtua-tennis-2009-also-coming-to-wii/">Virtua Tennis 2009 also coming to Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 12:20:00 EST. Sega has announced <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/sega-announces-virtua-tennis-2009">a 2009 installment</a> in its <em>Virtua Tennis</em> series ... called <em>Virtua Tennis 2009</em>. We thought it was pretty clever.<br /><br />Set to grace the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this May, <em>Virtua Tennis 2009</em> offers the expected singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches, along with the series' trademark World Tour mode (now complete with online leaderboards). You can also expect to take several real-life tennis stars through "Court Games," minigames said to feature "crocodiles, fruit and pirates." If that isn't tennis, we don't know what is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/sega-serves-up-virtua-tennis-2009-this-may/">Sega serves up Virtua Tennis 2009 this May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 14:55:00 EST. When she's not busy falling in love with Jack Black or being in <em>another</em> Leonardo DiCaprio movie (when's our chance?) Kate Winslet likes to school <strike>chumps</strike> her kids in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. At least, that's what she recently told the celebrity watchers at <em>E!</em> during the SAG awards. <br /><br />Despite the presence of the more popular <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/bowling">bowling</a> minigame, Kate is a big fan of the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/tennis">tennis</a> and <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/boxing">boxing</a> bits, calling the overall package "fantastic." Just keep an eye on your kids and pets, Kate. The gameplay clip <em>is</em> worth watching, as it displays the various shots that can be achieved through a well-timed flick of the wrist (top-spin, side-spin, slices, drop shots, etc.). We hope mixing up our shots actually <em>has an effect</em> on the game, because we always found <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/wii-sports-best-selling-game-of-all-time/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> tennis to be not-quite-as-advertised in this respect (though we're willing to accept we just may be rubbish at <em>Wii Sports</em> tennis).<br /><br />Oh yes, and these are non-embeddable, so you'll have to go to the site to watch them. But we welcome solid information anyway, which Japanese online retailer Neowing has provided.<br /><br />According to the product description, <em>Mario Tennis GC</em> enables players to wave the Wii Remote to execute forehand and backhand shots and direct the ball toward the left or right side of the court. Motion will also determine the addition of topspin and slice spin. Buttons are still used to deploy each character's unique special moves.<br /><br />If the (possible) second coming of <em>Wii Sports </em>tennis doesn't excite you, hang on to your GameCube version: <em>Play on Wii Mario Tennis GC</em> does not support GameCube controllers.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.inside-games.jp/news/322/32294.html">Inside-Games</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/mario-tennis-how-to-play-on-wii/">Mario Tennis: How to Play on Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:26:00 EST. For those of you who're fans of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tennis">tennis</a>, rejoice. EA is poised to present their own tennis title. And, as if that wasn't enough, it will take advantage of Nintendo's new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/wiimotionplus-puts-better-control-in-your-motion-control/">MotionPlus</a> peripheral, joining Ubisoft in proclaiming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/ubisoft-totally-hearts-motionplus/"><em>it's totally awesome</em></a>. EA also mentions that this will be the first tennis game to include the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which is where Wimbledon is played.<br /><br />So, how many of you are looking forward to seeing this one? A tennis game that takes advantage of MotionPlus? We're excited!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/ea-to-serve-up-new-wii-tennis-franchise/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/ea-looking-to-start-up-tennis-franchise-on-wii/">GC 2008: EA looking to start up tennis franchise on Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 09:57:00 EST. With all the recent announcements and pick-ups, you'd think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> would be bursting at the seams with upcoming titles, but it's just crammed one more under its belt: A new tennis franchise that will debut on Wii (though it will later come to other platforms) and take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus accessory.<br /><br />Besides the control <strike>gimmick</strike> innovation, its other claim to fame is being the only video game that includes the All England Lawn Tennis Club, where Wimbledon is played. So, with tennis added to the list, what's left for EA Sports? Curling? Cup stacking?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/ea-to-serve-up-new-wii-tennis-franchise/">GC 2008: EA to serve up new Wii tennis franchise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:30:00 EST. The team behind the Wii version of <em>Top Spin 3</em> was not exactly working in an enviable position. It seems a little funny to call a pack-in game a juggernaut, but that's exactly what <em>Wii Sports</em> is, and any game that sets out to deliver a realistic sports experience to Wii owners is up against that suprisingly excellent set of mini-games. Every tennis game, realistic or not, on the system is going to be compared -- probably unfavorably -- with a game that was <em>free</em>, and that's got to chafe.<br /><br />Unfortunately, it looks like someone was all too aware of that inevitable comparison, and worried besides, as <em>Top Spin 3</em> tries too hard to be too many things to too many people. Not only did PAM Development and 2K Sports strive to create a top notch tennis simulation, they also tried to make it easy to pick up and play ... and the two don't exactly go hand in hand when it comes to a deep sports game.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/wii-fanboy-review-top-spin-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Fanboy Review: Top Spin 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/wii-fanboy-review-top-spin-3/">Wii Fanboy Review: Top Spin 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. <br />Two <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gba">Game Boy Advance</a> games have randomly appeared in the Stars Catalogue, leading us to surmise that Nintendo has been spring-cleaning its warehouses and found a bunch of old, unsold stock. <em>Kirby &amp; The Amazing Mirror</em> and <em>Mario Power Tennis</em> are both decent purchases, we suppose, even if the price (5000 Stars each) is steep (you'd need to buy <em>at least</em> 20 DS games to amass that many Stars). We're still waiting on the warehouse with all the sealed Super Famicom consoles to get cleared out (it <em>must</em> exist somewhere).<br /><br />Some other new tat has also been added, including a Pok&eacute;mon sports bag, and three further items that have (inexplicably) sold out: a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/28/rabbids-to-return-to-ds-may-even-get-noticed/"><em>Raving Rabbids</em></a> T-shirt, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/ds-fanboy-review-pokemon-mystery-dungeon-2/"><em>Pok&eacute;mon Mystery Dungeon</em></a> bookmark, and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/cosplay-in-just-minutes-a-day/"><em>Brain Training</em></a> pen. Don't all rush at once, please.<br /><br />[<u>Update 1</u>: And the Kirbster has sold out!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/stars-catalogue-now-offering-gba-titles/">Stars Catalogue now offering GBA titles [Update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 15:30:00 EST. Tennis fans should be automatically impressed with the graphical quality displayed in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-ds/"><em>Top Spin 3</em></a> for the DS, if only because some pour souls actually tried their hand at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/tennsimasters-bleh-l-393922.jpg"><em>Tennis Masters</em></a>.<br /><br />Five new screens are ready for action in the gallery, and they certainly hold true to our original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/top-screens/">positive impression</a>. Here's a tip - open the gallery, put a hat and sunglasses on, then pay some chump five bucks to hold up your monitor while running back in forth in front of you. It's just like being there! The upside of buying <em>Top Spin 3</em> when it comes out? You'll have no more money left to waste on paying people to do stupid things. <br /><br /><br /><br />[Via press release]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/more-top-spin-3-screens-tennis-fans-clap-politely/">More Top Spin 3 screens, tennis fans clap politely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 14:00:00 EST. The "hitting balls with stuff" genre has really taken off on the Wii. We've enjoyed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/sega-superstars-tennis-bringing-back-awesome-minigames/">light entertainment</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/wii-fanboy-review-family-table-tennis/">small-scaled intensity</a>, but now tennis overlord<em> Top Spin 3</em> is coming out to play. Will it be awesome? The pedigree of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-wii/">Top Spin</a></em> lends us to think so, but check out these new screens in the gallery and judge for yourself.<br /><br />There's no official listing of the available control options, but a hefty wager can be placed on some kind of swinging motion being included. All bets must be placed before June 20 when the game hits the stores.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/swing-those-screens-top-spin-3/">Swing those screens, Top Spin 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br />You'll have to forgive our convoluted title -- really, it couldn't be helped. If it's not immediately clear, and we very much doubt that it is, GameStop has two great DS online and in-store deals this week:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=66369">Touch Detective 2 1/2</a></em>: $9.99, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/ds-fanboy-review-touch-detective-2-1-2/">our review</a><br /></li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=68073">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></em>: $14.99, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/">metareview</a><br /></li>
</ul>
Which both add up to $25 (provided that you round up)! See what we did there? Two-and-a-half $10 bills? $25? Come on!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/spend-2-1-2-10-dollar-bills-on-touch-detective-sega-superstars/">Spend 2 1/2 $10-dollar bills on Touch Detective, Sega Superstars Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. We always feel <em>surprised</em> when a 3D game on the DS doesn't look awkward and jag-tastic.<br /><br />We aren't sure how much of an audience there is for portable tennis, but with this relatively high-profile release, along with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/barnyard-blast-creators-latest-weird-title-tennis-elbow/"><em>Tennis Elbow</em></a> and the recently released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/">Sega Superstars Tennis</a>,</em> there seems to be something for everyone (who wants to play tennis on the DS). <em>Top Spin</em>, of course, brings the series' pedigree and a stable of (3D models in the likenesses of) real tennis stars like Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Andy Roddick.<br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/top-screens/">Top Screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 15:00:00 EST. <br />Despite our enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of <a href="http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/">Sega fanboys</a> everywhere) over <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></em>, a release that drips with fan service, the game failed to inspire consumers to rush out and buy the game like they did with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></em>? Not enough Mario, perhaps? Or olympics?<br /><br />Whatever the case, slow sales for the tennis title has given GameStop early cause to slash its prices for <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> across all platforms, and you can now buy the Wii game for as little as $19.99. It's a great bargain, considering the game was released only a month ago! You can order <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> through GameStop's online shop, but why not save a few bucks and pick it up at one of the retailer's local stores?<br /><br /><br />[Via GameStop circular]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/26/sega-superstars-tennis-bombs-marked-down-to-20/">Sega Superstars Tennis bombs, marked down to $20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. From the early reviews, it looks like the character roster is the best thing the handheld has going for it, though there are some solid gameplay mechanics buried beneath the fanservice. <br /><br /><a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/860/860593p1.html"><strong>IGN: 69%</strong></a> -- Solid, but too easy. "If you replaced the traditional tennis courts with ones taking place in such SEGA universes as Sonic the Hedgehog's Green Hill Zone, the Nights dreamworld Nightopia, and <em>House of the Dead's</em> Curian Mansion, and then replace the professional athletes with Sonic and Tails from <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, AiAi from <em>Super Monkey Ball</em>, Beat from <em>Jet Grind Radio</em>, and Ulala from <em>Space Channel 5</em>, you'd get SEGA Superstars Tennis. And that's exactly what Sumo, the developer of Virtua Tennis, has done for SEGA ... But compared to other tennis games, it feels more automatic than it should be."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/ds/games/reviews/170208.shtml"><strong>GamePro: 45%</strong></a> -- This is on the DS why? "The final thing to keep in mind when avoiding <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> for DS is that the game looks better on consoles. Also, the play style isn't really suited to handhelds, since there doesn't appear to be a way to save your progress in a tournament. While the character roster has potential, the tennis here is just too gimmicky and frustrating to recommend."<br /><br /><strong><em>Nintendo Power</em>: 80%</strong> -- The Nintendo magazine found themselves immersed in a solid experience -- for both tennis and Sega fans. "The default button-based control scheme is less forgiving than that of the <em>Mario</em> titles, calling for more precision and tighter timing -- either a welcome challenge or a minor frustration, depending on how much you mind AiAi acing one past you ... Control issues aside, <em>Sega Superstar Tennis</em> is swimming in clever game references and should be fun for even a casual Sega fan."<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/">Metareview: Sega Superstars Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. Brawl</em> -- if it were, we wouldn't see Sonic in Nintendo's game. <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> is a smaller release, meant, we would guess, to bridge the gap between "casual gamers" and Sega superfans. Or, to be more cynical, to be a <em>Virtua Tennis</em> sequel without the likeness rights. Did Sega and Sumo Digital serve up an ace or a fault? Or is the game best analogized by some other tennis term? The reviews seem to range from the ecstatic to the nonplussed. As huge fans of Nintendo, we often find ourselves being their harshest critics. One of the problems we've always had with the company was its lack of devotion to a competitive online arena, where gamers could do comparable things online with their Wii that the Xbox 360 and PS3 can do.<br /><br />Why do we bring all of this up? Well, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game <em>will</em> have the online play and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">it's missing from Nintendo platforms</a> because of "time and development resource constraints." We just wonder what kind of constraints would allow them to include it into the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and not in the Wii version? Hey, we're willing to wait a little longer so long as what we're getting is a <em>complete product</em> and not the table scraps left from the other versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/ulala-packing-tricks-in-sega-superstars-tennis/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a>. Sure, we get the best control method (presumably), but is it worth it?<br /><br />Regardless, we're still excited for the game. We just wish we could enjoy the game <em>with you</em>.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=37785">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/no-online-in-sega-superstar-tennis-wii-because-of-time-constrai/">No online in Sega Superstar Tennis Wii because of 'time constraints'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. Playing tennis to a rousing rendition of Samba de Janeiro, even in videogame form, feels a bit weird, but we strongly suspect we won't care!<br /><br />Past the break: footage of Ulala playing on home territory. It looks like Sega's new tennis title will come packed with various mini-games. The two latest videos show off both a ring collecting <span style="font-style: italic;">Sonic</span> mini-game and a another -- the objective of which we can't quite discern -- based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChuChu_Rocket%21"><span style="font-style: italic;">ChuChu Rocket</span></a>. The games look entertaining enough, but let's just hope the tennis is up to snuff. After all, mini-games are mini for a reason. Having said that, we pray that there's a <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Channel 5</span> dancing mini-game with "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sjgdoN9ew8">Space Michael</a>."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/video-sega-superstars-tennis-mini-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Sega Superstars Tennis mini-games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/video-sega-superstars-tennis-mini-games/">Video: Sega Superstars Tennis mini-games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 15:30:00 EST. <br />We haven't seen much <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samba-de-amigo"><em>Samba de Amigo</em></a> related media for Sega's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis/">upcoming tennis game</a>, aside from a handful of screenshots. Fortunately, the <em>Samba</em> stage looks to be pretty great, if we do say so ourselves. The above trailer may be super short, but the stage seems to have all the elements of "awesome," like a cheetah band, good music, and bra-wearing cacti. It's nice to see some fun characters make a return from the original Dreamcast game -- we're sure our favorite maraca-playing monkey would be lonely without them.<br /><br />After the break, you can also check out the intro trailer for the Sonic's Green Hill Zone court.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/sega-superstars-tennis-de-amigo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega Superstars Tennis de amigo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/sega-superstars-tennis-de-amigo/">Sega Superstars Tennis de amigo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. Europe might not be able to <em>Brawl</em> with Sonic in March, but they can make the speedy blue hedgehog pick up a tennis racquet in <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>. Originally dated for March 28th, Eurogamer reports that the game won't take as long to hit European shores as we originally thought. <br /><br />While the game's release was only bumped up eight days to March 20th, Europeans can rest assured that they're getting it only two days after us folks in America (compared to the usual gap, that's not so bad). <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher">Some</a> of the staff at Nintendo Wii Fanboy are super hyped about this game for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/we-just-bought-sega-superstars-tennis-with-our-minds/">Jet Set Radio references</a> alone, so we hope those of you in Europe who feel the same way enjoy these good tidings. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/some-more-baseball-for-the-wii-with-mlb-2k8/">once again</a> you'll be forced to choose between motion controls and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">online play</a>.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/01/european-wait-for-sega-superstars-tennis-gets-a-little-shorter/">European wait for Sega Superstars Tennis gets a little shorter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 01 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. It's a measure of just how out-of-control the Wii movement is that the console turned up at this year's awards as a joke unto itself that featured host Jon Stewart losing his dignity in a game of <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span> tennis to young songstress Jamia Simone Nash of nominated film <span style="font-style: italic;">August Rush</span>.<br /><br />It's not the first time the Comedy Central "anchors" have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/stephen-colbert-shows-off-his-mii-defeats-pelosi/">exploited the Wii for humorous effect</a>, but the <span style="font-style: italic;">Daily Show's</span> host seemed to need a little more practice with the sports simulation. Either that, or he just wasn't used to the <em>enormous</em> screen the game graced during the awards show. See for yourself in the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/wii-goes-to-the-oscars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii goes to the Oscars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/wii-goes-to-the-oscars/">Wii goes to the Oscars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 12:00:00 EST. Rarely has a single game been associated with a console as much as the Wii's pack-in, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/british-pm-loves-wii-fails-at-wii-sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>, has with the Wii. It's so strongly identified that "playing Wii" is often shorthand for "playing <em>Wii Sports.</em>" With pretty much every Wii owner obsessed to a degree with <em>Wii Sports</em> tennis, do we need more tennis games? Is it a matter of a popular game creating a market, or are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/sega-superstars-tennis-bringing-back-awesome-minigames/">more</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-wii/">tennis</a> games on the Wii redundant? <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/wii-warm-up-youre-getting-served/">Wii Warm Up: You're getting served</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 09:00:00 EST. The game full of glorified demos turned out to be a gem, and even if everything had been nixed except for <em>Wii Tennis</em>, this blogger would have been happy with it.<br /><br />That's why we're excited about <em>Top Spin 3</em> for Wii. Although 2K didn't make note of motion controls for the Wii version in the press release, we'll assume the game will have them (2K would be daft not to take advantage of the Wiimote). After how fun <em>Wii Tennis</em> was, we could only imagine that a game completely devoted to tennis would be even better.<br /><br />That's not to say that <em>Top Spin</em> won't face fierce competition (namely with<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstar-tennis/" http:="" ir.take2games.com="">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></em>.) We think there's a market for both games, though. Some people will want to play with beloved Sega characters, while others might want to play with actual tennis stars. And, some folks might prefer a light-hearted title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/sega-superstars-tennis-bringing-back-awesome-minigames/">involving minigames</a>, while others might want a true-blue tennis title. If <em>Top Spin</em> offers online play, that in itself might also be a draw for 2K's tennis over Sega's game, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">lacks</a> that vital feature.<br /><br />Yet, we have to say that the list of playable pros is a little flat (where's recent Aussie Open champion, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novak_%C4%90okovi%C4%87">Novak Djokovic</a>? And why is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Nadalhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Nadal">Rafael Nadal</a> only playable in the PS3 version?). Of course, that's just us nitpicking, since we happen to be big tennis nerds.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-wii/">2K announces Top Spin 3 for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 22:30:00 EST. <br />Whatever you think of Sega's output since the Dreamcast bowed out of the industry, Sega titles have a history of containing outstanding minigames. Remember how you once skipped three days of university to ace every minigame in <em>Crazy Taxi</em>, or how you would turn down nights out with friends because you wanted to knock down giant skittles in <em>Virtua Tennis</em>? Well, probably not, because those are <em>my memories</em>, but you get the picture.<br /><br />Anyway, <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> looks like it will resurrect this proud tradition of awesome minigames. They're full of very Sega-esque tasks, from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPC3ILbKecA">collecting</a> golden rings to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead/">fending off</a> the living dead to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chu_Chu_Rocket">guiding</a> mice into rockets. All of which is enough to make us forgive the game's other imperfections, like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">lack of online play</a>, or NiGHTS' plainly ludicrous voice. Go past the break to see why we're looking forward to playing minigames on the Wii again!<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/sega-superstars-tennis-bringing-back-awesome-minigames/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega Superstars Tennis bringing back awesome minigames</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/sega-superstars-tennis-bringing-back-awesome-minigames/">Sega Superstars Tennis bringing back awesome minigames</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST. For all of you looking for fast and furious Tennis action without the resulting elbow pain, look no further. 2K has announced that <em>Top Spin 3</em>, the latest iteration in their, you guess it, <em>tennis franchise</em>, will be gracing Nintendo systems. Development duties will be handled by PAM development, a 2K studio, and release is currently planned for spring 2008.<br /><br />Head past the break for the full press release.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2K announces Top Spin 3 for DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/2k-announces-top-spin-3-for-ds/">2K announces Top Spin 3 for DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST.
