Skyrim: Legendary Edition strategy guide crushes coffee tables

The Skyrim: Legendary Edition tome, an updated, premium version of Prima's strategy guide coinciding with the game's re-release, weighs over six pounds. Over 1,100 pages of information cover the popular RPG's intricacies, including its quests, local flora and fauna and sprawling geography.

The book will be sold exclusively through GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon alongside Skyrim: Legendary Edition on Tuesday, June 4, in both hardcover ($50) and paperback ($30) versions. No matter which you choose, just know it will ultimately become as neglected and forgotten as everything else on this mortal coil; such is the toll of Skyrim.

GamersGate offering Bethesda's best for cheap this weekend

GamersGate is hosting a big sale on Bethesda titles this weekend, featuring games from the last few years of the company's history on sale for a fraction of the usual price. Dishonored, for example, is available for a low $14.99, or you can get Skyrim for $14.95, Rage for $9.95, or Fallout: New Vegas' Ultimate Edition for $9.95. Brink, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Morrowind are all listed at bargain prices as well.

A few of the titles have dropped out of stock already, which means that GamersGate has run out of digital keys for them. But as long as the title is still available for purchase, you can buy it, and then GamersGate will deliver a key when more are available. The deals last through the weekend, so now's your chance to fill out that Bethesda back catalog you've been missing.

Skyrim: Legendary Edition (the whole caboodle) out this June

Bethesda Softworks announced this morning that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition, which includes all the game's downloadable content, will launch this June. The full package will be available for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on June 4 and 7 in North America and Europe, respectively.

Skyrim: Legendary Edition is priced $60 in North America. The game costs £39.99 (€49.99 / AU$69.95) in Europe and Australia for consoles, with PC priced at £29.99 (€39.99 / AU$49.95).

The bundle includes the original game, official expansions Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, as well as "added features like combat cameras, mounted combat, Legendary difficulty mode for hardcore players, and Legendary skills - enabling you to master every perk and level up your skills infinitely." Bethesda recently announced it was "moving on" from Skyrim, which it began working on in 2006.

Skyrim can run on Oculus Rift, please remember the real world

Chris Gallizi has gotten Skyrim running on the Oculus Rift, ushering in a new, dark age for the human race.

Thousands of people will now banish themselves into a harsh virtual world for days at a time, emerging only when they remember that the sweet rolls and porridges they've been desperately snarfing will only satisfy their imaginary dragonman body, and not the one that wastes away outside of the game world.

Skyrim concludes production, 'minor updates' to occur as needed

Bethesda Softworks stated this morning it's "moving on" from Skyrim, which it began working on back in 2006. The developer will continue to provide "minor updates to Skyrim as needed," but don't expect any more official downloadable content.

Skyrim produced three pieces of major DLC: the vampiric Dawnguard, homey Hearthfire and the best-reviewed expansion, Dragonborn. The last included Solstheim, an entirely new region imbued with Lovecraftian tones.

"Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio's full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet," reads a statement on the company's website.

Fallout 4 is expected "before 2018."

Skyrim 1.9 update now on Xbox, later today on PS3

Update 1.9 for Skyrim is now live on Xbox 360, with the PS3 patch expected to drop later today. Apart from numerous bug fixes, the update's hallmark features are the new Legendary difficulty setting and Legendary Skill system. In the new system, once a skill reaches level 100, it can be rolled back to level 15. As Bethesda points out in the patch notes, this technically removes the level cap from Skyrim.

The patch went live on PC last month.

Skyrim 'Legendary' update live on Steam, 'later this month' still plan for consoles

Skyrim's 1.9 patch - which adds a tougher Legendary difficulty setting and allows players to reset skill progression - is officially live on Steam. PC players will also find the latest version of the game squashes several bugs, including a variety of issues affecting companions and several quest glitches.

Bethesda says it's aiming to drop this patch on console Skyrim players "later this month," presumably simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PS3 now that the latter is all caught up. For now, use that free time to study for your Norse midterms.

Bethesda launches online store featuring merch from Skyrim, Fallout and more

Until now, there just hasn't been a suitable place to pick up a pair of snazzy Vault 101 sneakers or a tasteful lithograph of the Skyrim landscape. Bethesda has solved that problem with a brand new online store, hocking wares that run the gamut from t-shirts to that recently announced and expensive Dragonborn statue.

The store also hosts Elder Scrolls merch, Dishonored pendants, and a nearly convincing Vault-Tec work shirt - you know, in case you pick up that quest to infiltrate a robot manufacturing plant.

Skyrim Dragonborn statue available for pre-order

The Dragonborn - or simply "Dovahkiin" to his pals - is available now for pre-order as a 16-inch statue from GamingHeads.com. Inspired by Skyrim's official artwork, the poly-stone statues is hand finished and hand painted. The Dov also comes dressed in "hand-tailored fabrics for unparalleled realism." No off-the-rack nonsense for the dragonborn. It's all couture.

And, as we all know, couture costs copious amounts of cash. The "Standard Edition" of the statue is $299.99, limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide. For those who believe a dovahkiin uses magic, then they'll want the $329.99 "Exclusive Edition," which adds an alternate arm with fireball that "illuminates and pulses like real fire."

The statues are expected to ship via invisible dragons to doorsteps in the fourth quarter of this year.

Skyrim v1.9 beta live on Steam, adds Legendary skills and difficulty

The latest version of Skyrim is up and running in beta mode on Steam, available to those who opt-in through their Steam clients now. Aside from various bug fixes, the update adds a new Legendary difficulty mode and the ability to roll skills at level 100 into Legendary status, resetting those skills to level 15 for continued development.

Console versions of Skyrim should get version 1.9 later on this month, the Bethesda Blog says. Last month, the PS3 version of Skyrim was updated to 1.8 and finally started catching up on DLC, culminating in the release of Dawnguard on February 26.

Prepare for Skyrim Dragonborn DLC on PS3 with update 1.8 today

In preparation of tomorrow's descent of Dragonborn DLC onto PS3, a new Skyrim update is available for download today. Version 1.8 not only prepares the game for the DLC, but institutes a few general bug fixes, including a game crash when using the "vampiric grip" ability and instances where duplicate NPCs would show up in the game world.

Tomorrow kicks off a three-week release schedule for Skyrim DLC on PS3, catching up the platform first with Dragonborn, followed by Hearthfire on February 19 and Dawnguard on February 26. Since September, Sony and Bethesda have been working together to bring the tardy DLC packs to PS3.

Skyrim PS3 DLC dated for Europe

Ye European knight of Skyrim, your wait is almost over - as long as you're not French, Italian, German, or Spanish. Yes, the PS3's three Skyrim DLC expansions arrive on Europe's PSN, as usual, a day after they do in North America. That means Dragonborn slashes on February 13, Hearthfire pierces a week after on February 20, and one week after that it's Dawnguard gutting on February 27.

However, it looks like players with the French, Italian, German, or Spanish releases of the game might have to wait a bit longer, as Bethesda says it's working with Sony to finalize dates for these versions.

Skyrim PS3 DLC dated for North America

Bethesda confirmed the North American release dates for the PS3's long-overdue Skyrim DLC expansions today. Dragonborn is first up on February 12, followed by Hearthfire a week after on February 19, with Dawnguard finishing things up on February 26.

As Bethesda announced last month, each expansion is going half-off during the week of its release, although the publisher has yet to announce specific prices. Meanwhile, the PC release of Dragonborn is scheduled for February 5.

Elder Scrolls, Fallout and other Bethesda soundtracks now on iTunes

Now that's what we call Dragonborn music, Vol. 1. Bethesda Softworks has released seven of its game soundtracks to the mom and pop record shop known as "iTunes."

The Elder Scrolls soundtracks, all composed by Jeremy Soule, include Morrowind and Oblivion for $9.99 each, while Skyrim asks an imperial premium at $15.99.

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, both by Inon Zur, are $11.99 apiece. Daniel Licht's soundtrack for Dishonored and Rod Abernethy's RAGE are $9.99 each.

If you're trying to use the Elder Scrolls tracks in a surreal experience, try playing them on your iPod while walking around a city. Everything's so ... majestic.

Skyrim's Dragonborn hits PC Feb. 5, PS3 in February along with Hearthfire, Dawnguard

Skyrim DLC Dragonborn comes to PC on February 5, and to PS3 sometime in the same month. The PS3 also finally gets the Hearthfire and Dawnguard expansions, with both expected to arrive in February as well. In what's seemingly a gesture to compensate for their delays, each expansion on PSN is half-price during its launch week.

Dragonborn's arrival on PS3 in February will mark the first piece of Skyrim DLC for the system, some eight or so months after the first add-on, Dawnguard, came to Xbox 360. PS3 players waited with very little word about when any DLC was going to arrive, until today.

Skyrim, Oblivion wield deal-blades in Elder Scrolls sale on Xbox Live [update]

Looking for a last-minute getaway destination before 2013 grinds into gear? Why not try the lush, wildlife-infused terrains of Tamriel, on sale today on Xbox Live Airlines? Just don't forget to bring your dragon repellent. Yes, the last Countdown to 2013 deal of the year brings discounts for Oblivion and Skyrim on Games on Demand, as well as their DLC.

Today's deal slashes Skyrim's price in half to $29.99, as well as taking 50 percent out of the Hearthfire and Dawnguard add-ons. However, at the time of writing Hearthfire is still at the regular 400 MSP, although Xbox spokestype Major Nelson indicates the price should lower later today, Dawnguard is rightfully half-off of 800 MSP.

Meanwhile Oblivion gets a 33-percent-sized chunk ripped out of it, that taking the previous Elder Scrolls game down to $9.99. There are discounts for its DLC too, with the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine add-ons half-price at 600 and 200 MSP respectively.

Update: The Hearthfire DLC is now at the indicated on-sale price of 200 MSP.

Skyrim - Dragonborn review: Miraak-ulous

The first thing I did in Solstheim was kill a cop.

I didn't want to. I was trying to steal a key to a jail cell. I didn't know what was in the cell--I just knew I wouldn't be able to open it otherwise. I guess I'm a bad thief, as the Dunmer guard immediately pulled his sword. My housecarl and I made quick work of him.

I took the key, searched the cell and found a hidden passage. There was also a bed. I hadn't slept in over a year, literally, since whenever I last played Skyrim, so I took a nap before searching that hidden passage. Bad idea: I woke up in a daze, far away from the cell, on the outskirts of the town I was visiting, dutifully hammering on a giant monolith called the Earth Stone. Something, or someone, had transported me in my sleep. The Earth Stone had been taken over by the cult of Miraak, the ancient Dragonborn turned false God who wanted me dead. I probably shouldn't have killed that cop.

PSA: Skyrim, XCOM, Max Payne 3 DLC available today

It's a big day for big games to get comparatively smaller add-ons.

The Skyrim "Dragonborn" DLC launches today on Xbox 360; you'll have to wait until next year to play it on PS3 and PC. XCOM: Enemy Unknown players on all platforms can recruit Zhang today in the "Slingshot" DLC. And Max Payne 3 players can unearth the title character's "Painful Memories" with a set of new multiplayer maps and weapons, though he'd probably prefer leaving them repressed.

He's kind of a downer as it is.

Skyrim's 'Dragonborn' DLC flies to PC, PS3 in 2013; on tap tomorrow for Xbox 360

Bethesda Softworks confirmed that Skyrim's "Dragonborn" downloadable content add-on is expected to launch "early next year" on PS3 and PC. The add-on is scheduled to launch tomorrow for Xbox 360, as part of Skyrim's exclusivity window for the platform.

The PC launch falls in line with previously released Skyrim packs "Dawnguard" and "Hearthfire," while the PS3 announcement is a bit of a surprise. Although the publisher had previously stated DLC was "close" for PS3, this latest announcement only recognizes "Dragonborn." We've followed up with Bethesda for clarification and will update when we hear back.

Update: Bethesda responded to our specific request for clarification about "Dawnguard" and "Hearthfire" for PS3 by stating: "We think Dragonborn is our best add-on for Skyrim yet and we didn't want fans to wait long, so that's our current focus. Each platform takes a lot of time and attention."

Struggling with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim one year later

This is a weekly column from freelancer Rowan Kaiser, which focuses on "Western" role-playing games: their stories, their histories, their mechanics, their insanity, and their inanity. This week Rowan explores the one-year anniversary of Skyrim, a game that - despite critical and commercial success, including a 5-star review from Joystiq - he still can't get a good handle on.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim hit the first anniversary of its 2011 release this month. Despite a year's worth of play, criticism, mods, and add-ons, I still don't have a good handle on Skyrim in its entirety. It's a game that I'm happy to have played, and recommend highly to anyone who might enjoy it and can afford it. But it's also a game that I give up on fairly quickly, every time I start a new character.

The reason I want Skyrim to hold my interest is because I have a strong, positive gut reaction to much of what Skyrim does. Some of my favorite occasions in games occur when you come to an overlook and catch a moment of sheer beauty. When you wander into a snow-covered town and the music gently plays in the background. When game systems combine and something new emerges from what had been previously predictable. In these moments the experience feels just right. Moments like this help to enhance the experience, unfolding into something grand.

And Skyrim is full of these occasions. Bethesda's latest title in the longstanding franchise has the relative beauty of Ultima VII, the magic of Daggerfall, and the emergent narrative of Far Cry 2. I get sequences in Skyrim where I'm faced with an impending dragon attack, introducing a beast much too powerful for my character. Worried about my survival, I duck into a tomb for safety only to be greeted by the most powerful undead adversary I've yet to meet. Stuck between both, and at the edge of a cliff, I fall and hope to catch tiny ledges on my way down. If I survive, the music calms and I can limp into town to lick my wounds and consider my next step.

Skyrim Dragonborn screens hatched

Skyrim's "Dragonborn" downloadable content flies in December 4 on Xbox 360 and we've conjured up a gallery of shots for the expansion. Taking place off the coast of Morrowind, on the island of Solstheim, adventurers with all limbs functioning will find all-new locales and baddies.

The new DLC, priced at 1600 Microsoft Points ($20), also includes new shouts and the ability to tame dragons. Oh yeah, you'll also have to face off against the first Dragonborn, but we're sure you've got the knees for it.

Skyrim DLC 'close' for PS3, says Bethesda

The Bethesda Game Studios Twitter account stated yesterday the company was close to releasing new Skyrim content on PlayStation 3 and PC. The tweet is in reference to the latest bit of DLC with an Xbox 360 exclusivity window, but it's the first real glimmer of hope PS3 owners have had for Skyrim DLC, which has yet to make its way to the console.

The latest update we had on Skyrim DLC for PS3 was in early October, when Bethesda VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines wrote on Twitter he had no new information on PS3 DLC and would share an update when he had one.

We reached out to the company this morning to clarify that it was referring to the Dawnguard and Hearthfire DLC specifically for PS3. We'll update when we hear back.

Update: Bethesda informs us it's not clarifying further. A rep tells us, "It simply is meant to inform fans new content is coming to PC and PS3."

Skyrim 'Dragonborn' DLC out on Xbox 360 Dec. 4

Bethesda has unveiled the latest downloadable "add-on" for Skyrim. "Dragonborn" will be released first on Xbox 360, with a December 4 release date and a 1,600 Microsoft Point price. The PS3 version will ... probably be a while.

The trailer for the DLC shows off some of the new environments and enemies you'll be finding buckets in and putting buckets on, respectively.

Oblivion, Skyrim and expansions on sale through Xbox marketplace this week

Oblivion and Skyrim, along with their downloadable expansions, are on sale this week through the Xbox Live Marketplace for gold members. Oblivion is priced at $9.99, with DLC packs Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine half-off for 600 ($7.50) and 200 ($2.50) Microsoft Points, respectively.

Skyrim is currently priced at $44.99. The vampiric Dawnguard expansion is 25 percent off for 1200 MSP ($15), while the dovamestic Hearthfire content is $4 (320 MSP). The content is on fus-ro-discount until November 5.

Skyrim Premium Edition planned for certain European territories

Skyrim Premium Edition was revealed earlier today on Amazon Germany, with Bethesda telling Joystiq the special bundle is not coming to the States. First noticed by Examiner, the bundle includes a world map, T-shirt, postcards, physical novel and a bonus disk with special features.

Bethesda tells us the premium edition is "only available in certain territories in Europe," going on to specifically list Germany, UK and Benelux.

The pack does not appear to contain any of Skyrim's previously released downloadable content. Skyrim's previous DLC included Dawnguard and Hearthfire, it's currently speculated the next piece of DLC will be called Dragonborn.

Rice University offers course on Old Norse mythology, Skyrim

Look, you don't need an expensive piece of paper from some institution to know that you're the Dohvakiin. You know it, we know it, the guy you yelled at until he died knows it -- that's all that really matters in the long run. But, if for some reason you did want to expand your knowledge of the ancient legends behind your ancient legend, Rice University has you covered.

"Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim" is a new course at Rice University in Houston, TX, which "introduces students to fantasy as both psychological concept and driving force in gamer culture" by having students "read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim."

As you can imagine, enrollment availability is limited to actual, bona fide students at Rice University. Additionally, the class is only available this semester, which is sad considering that beating Skyrim will most likely take longer than passing the course.

Rumor: Skyrim's next DLC is 'Dragonborn'

According to code pulled from the latest Skyrim patch, the game's next piece of DLC is thought to be called "Dragonborn." Eurogamer took note of Bethesda forum member "Mardoxx," who went code diving and came up with a few unconfirmed details. Dragonborn will take place on the island of Solstheim, include new armor types and there are references to dragon mounts and several locations.

Bethesda had no comment on the information when asked. The company did previously trademark Dragonborn, as it did with Hearthfire, which turned out to be Skyrim DLC.

Skyrim's 'Hearthfire' now on PC, nothing new on PS3 DLC

Skyrim's Dovamestic "Hearthfire" add-on is available now on PC. The $5 piece of country kitchen downloadable content allows players to buy land, build a home, raise a family and live out a simulated Elder Scrolls adventuring housefrau life. The pack is available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish through Steam.

With the Dawnguard and Hearthfire expansions both available now on Xbox 360 and PC, PS3 owners have every right to ask, "What about us?" Well, there's still no answer to that.

"I don't have any info on Hearthfire, Dawnguard, or DLC in general for PS3," Bethesda VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines wrote on Twitter. "We're still on it. Will share update when I have one."

Sony has a 'big dev support team' working with Bethesda on Dawnguard

A Sony support team is working closely with Bethesda to bring Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC to PS3. Dawnguard launched on the Xbox 360 in June and on PC in August. Bethesda previously notes that Skyrim is a "massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources" and it's not sure if it will be able to reach a resolution on the DLC with Sony.

Sony's Adam Boyes echoes that sentiment to Kotaku. "We work with all of our partners to try and solve their problems," Boyes says. "We have a big, broad dev support team that works closely with Bethesda - and with all of our partners - to work with them to solve any sort of issues they have along the way.

"Of course, I always want everything to work always for everyone. I can't promise any kind of resolution or timeline but can say that everyone involved is trying their best to get this stuff working."

Bethesda undecided on Wii U, cautious on next-gen consoles

Though the WiiPad might seem like an excellent instrument for managing your inventory of cheese wheels and soul gems in Skyrim, Bethesda doesn't have plans for Nintendo's upcoming console just yet. Bethesda marketing VP Pete Hines says the studio's "approach has been to put our games out on all of the platforms that will support them," but that "so far the Wii hasn't fitted into that. Whether Wii U does down the road is TBD."

Hines tells Videogamer that Bethesda is, in general, cautious of the next round of consoles. "For me the problems with new consoles are two-fold. The developers are trying to hit a moving technical target, because the platforms are being built. A new console doesn't just show up a year before launch and is exactly what it will be when it comes out. It moves and iterates along the way. And introducing something like that to games that are in development is always a bit tricky. And that is obviously an element of risk."

New systems also split the active audience, Hines says, though it goes without saying that Bethesda's pragmatic approach doesn't preclude support for upcoming systems. If there's a big enough audience, it won't be left wanting for dragons and cheese wheels.

PSA: Skyrim's 'Hearthfire' expansion available now

Skyrim's "Hearthfire" add-on is ready for Xbox 360's Dovamestics. Buy land, build a home, and then fill it with the respectful youths from around Skyrim you've come to know and love.

Beyond the blessing of parenthood, customize your house with an armory, alchemy lab and trade tools of whatever other crafting arts you're into. Make a hall to show off baubles and your expansive dragon bone collection.

Hearthfire costs 400 Microsoft Points ($5). There was no mention of when the expansion will make its way to PC or PS3.

Bethesda: PS3 Dawnguard release still problematic

The Skyrim expansion "Dawnguard" has been available on the Xbox 360 since June, and debuted on PC at the beginning of August. The PS3 version, meanwhile, is still a no show. Without delving into specifics, Bethesda has shed a bit more light on the issue in a recent staff post on its own forums. The post notes that "Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources" and that matters get "much more complex" when dealing with content on the level of Dawnguard.

Bethesda has "tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone." The post notes further that Bethesda is also working on more content for Skyrim - the "Hearthfire" expansion was revealed earlier this week - which makes the situation "even more complicated," presumably referring to the resources needed to continue working on Dawnguard.

The company continues, offering perhaps the most troubling statement for PS3 owners, "This is not a problem we're positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content." Bethesda notes the "frustration" PS3 users must be facing, and promises an update as soon as possible.

We've contacted Bethesda to see if we can learn any further details on the issues facing the PS3 version.

Skyrim's 'Hearthfire' expansion tends the home September 4

Skyrim's "Hearthfire" expansion became official this morning - an add-on allowing adventurers who took one too many arrows to the knee to become domestics (Dovamestic?). Hearthfire enables players to build their own home, create additions to said home, and help raise children. Those rooms can be profession-specific - for instance, a room dedicated to herbalism. The joys of domestic life!

"From a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with armory, alchemy laboratory, and more," Bethesda said of the DLC. "Choose your land, customize your house, guard it from unwanted visitors, and turn your house into a home by adopting children." Apparently, in the fantasy world of Skyrim, houses aren't homes without children.

Hearthfire will be available September 4 on Xbox 360 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5), no other platforms are mentioned at this time. Skyrim's previous DLC, Dawnguard, took around a month to make its way to PC, but the PS3 version experienced some hiccups.

Bethesda trademarks 'Hearthfire,' which is totally a thing from Skryim

When Skyrim's "Dawnguard" DLC was first outed by a trademark filing back in March, we knew little aside from the name - references to the Dawnguard could be found in Skyrim, but only vague ones. It wasn't even clear that the filing was for DLC at the time - nor is it clear today that a recently unearthed trademark filing by Bethesda parent company Zenimax Media for "Hearthfire" is Skyrim's next DLC.

But it sure smells like it. The term "Hearthfire" (or "Heartfire") correlates to the ninth month in The Elder Scrolls' world of Tamriel, as well as a set of books in the 2920 series. Bethesda is staying mum for now, telling VentureBeat that the studio, "does not comment on trademark filings." The filing was made back in May, so it's always possible that the idea has since passed.

The filing is definitely game software, per the description: "Computer game software for use with computers and video game consoles; downloadable computer game software offered via the internet and wireless devices." There's also a wholly unremarkable image alongside the trademark filing, seen above.
