The whole "Tiberium infestation" seems to have gotten a tad worse since we last left the Command and Conquer series. The recently released debut trailer for the fourth installment in the core franchise (posted after the break) features no gameplay, but includes a great deal of the chartreuse crystal that the world can't seem to live with (or without). It also features an appearance by bald-headed Nod leader Kane, a possible alliance between two old enemies, and a glowing, swirly ... ball ... thing.

Confused? We're right there with you. Check out the trailer after the break, but brace yourself -- we won't find out what the hell is going on until 2010.
Continue reading Command and Conquer 4 debut trailer features swirly balls

Command and Conquer 4 debut trailer features swirly balls originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 13:15:00 EST.
Talking with Gamasutra about EA's recent decision to abandon development on Tiberium, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey believes such a move could actually hurt EA's credibility in the long run.

"Continued lack of management execution and/or product quality, damages new management's credibility and dampens our excitement for the company's shares," said Hickey who also expects EA to lower their fiscal year performance expectations. But all analysts don't agree with that assessment, as Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts that the Tiberium cancellation actually adds credibility to the company saying that "canceling a bad game goes a long way toward preserving the quality of the overall lineup."

What say you?
After being slapped with a delay or two and being given no explanation to why, today EA made the announcement that the Command & Conquer based FPS Tiberium has been canceled and is no longer in development.

EA studio head in charge of the game, Mike Verdu explained in an email to the press that "the game had fundamental design challenges from the start" and that Tiberium was ultimately canceled due to these flawed design decisions not being able to be corrected.

Poor Tiberium, you weren't loved by all, but you weren't hated by all either. Your trailer piqued our interest, but just couldn't get the job done. As a way of saying goodbye, we embedded your debut trailer after the break. Those hoping to Command and Conquer from a more personal perspective are sure to be disappointed with the demise of EA's upcoming first-person shooter, Tiberium. According to a report on Kotaku (we've verified with EA), development on the game was suspended due to its inability to meet "the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label" before its post-delay fiscal 2010 release.

According to EA's Mike Verdu, "The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn't coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers."

Though we're glad to be spared from any game that clumsily crashes into EA's recently lowered Limbo pole, Tiberium's cancellation will reportedly result in several members of the development team being "released." The publisher claims that it "will make every effort" to move "talented people" to other, actually-coming-out projects.

Update: We've added a full statement from EA's Mariam Sughayer after the break.
Continue reading Die-berium: EA cans Command & Conquer FPS

Die-berium: EA cans Command & Conquer FPS originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 15:50:00 EST. Sniffle, sniffle. According to the EA execs, the Command & Conquer based FPS Tiberium (initially thought to release later this Fall) will now hit retail shelves sometime in EA's fiscal 2010. Meaning that Tiberium will release sometime after March 31st, 2009. Odd too, because we thought the gameplay footage they released back in January looked pretty polished. During its quarterly earnings conference call, EA announced that its first-person romp through the popular Command & Conquer universe would not be released until the company's fiscal year 2010. Converting that information into a format your calendar will better understand: Don't expect Tiberium to arrive before April 2009. We expect this delay from the game's previous Fall 2008 release date will better allow the designers to craft exciting weapons, insert formidable enemies and carefully remove any elements which could remind us of the last time someone tried to make a C&C FPS.
Command & Conquer FPS Tiberium delayed to fiscal 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 18:37:00 EST. Straight out of EA, here's three minutes of delicious gameplay from Tiberium, the FPS take on the Command and Conquer series, for you to peruse. We had hoped the most prominent visual feature would be a massive, god-like player ever present in the sky, cutting a swath across the battlefield with his gigantic, scythe-like pointer, the deafening sound of clicks echoing above the gunfire. We were, as you can see, disappointed.

The footage here looks pretty good though, despite the fact that the size of the gun and the rocking motion gives the illusion that that player is riding in a large, well-armed canoe. What do you you think?
Want to see three minutes of Tiberium gameplay? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 13:00:00 EST. This collage-o-gameplay shows off a few of Tiberium's gameplay cards including the ability to sprint, slide and peer around cover. But best of all are the Transformers style weapons that not only have fluid animations (so many games drop the ball on that), but also dish out the destruction rather effectively. Also, watch for the moment when a scatter projectile is shot and takes out a handful flying discs. That stuff is priceless. The video is embedded above, so get your watch on.
Video: First look at Tiberium gameplay originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 11:30:00 EST. A trailer that talks about this stuff called Tiberium (have you heard?) where we get a feeling that everyone wants it and is willing to go to war for it. Though, after watching the trailer, we are beginning to wonder if every object in the world of Tiberium will transform somehow. Maybe Tiberium is a new Transformers IP in disguise ... meh, bad idea. What we do know is that Tiberium = First Person + Squad Control + Epic Sci-Fi and we're certain that's what the developers want us to remember. So, we'll do them a favor and equate Tiberium with those words from hence forth. Enough babble, just watch already.
Video: Super fresh Tiberium debut trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jan 2008 13:00:00 EST. Though info on EA's Command & Conquer FPS, Tiberium, was dropped in last month's Game Informer we were left staring at press images (like the one you see above) that did little to explain the game's aesthetic, not to mention the "blend of first-person shooting and tactical squad combat" gameplay the press material's promise. Cue the debut trailer, just gone live at GameTrailers, which doesn't help so much in the latter category - it's all CGI, no gameplay here - but we're liking the aesthetic (hey, did you borrow that helmet from the Dead Space guys down the hall?). Catch the full trailer after the break, or hit up GameTrailers for the HD version.

Continue reading Tiberium (the Command & Conquer FPS) debut trailer

Tiberium (the Command & Conquer FPS) debut trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jan 2008 12:06:00 EST. And actually, all the rumors we've heard about Tiberium ended up being correct. It'll feature its own unique blend of FPS gameplay that mixes in some tactical combat strategy, a deep and engaging plot and weapons that are explosively fun. It'll be a lot like C&C, but in FPS form. Oh joy! Click the jump link to read the full press release and start pondering what Tiberium will be like on the 360. Electronics Arts has wasted little time in lifting the veil from off last week's rumor surrounding Tiberium, a new game set in the long-running Command & Conquer universe that will once again try to put a FPS spin on the series' RTS roots. With versions in development at EA Los Angeles for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Tiberium's shoot-em-up style follows 2002's Command & Conquer: Renegade, a critical and commercial mess of a game that attempted to inject first and third-person elements into the series, while largely failing at both.

EA describes Tiberium's gameplay as a "blend of first-person shooting and tactical squad combat," allowing players to control multiple ground and air units in addition to the game's central character, Forward Battle Commander Ricardo Vega. All of this makes the game sound like it plans to follow more in the footsteps of the likes of Ghost Recon and its ilk rather than Tiberium's ill-conceived predecessor, though we are still understandably gun shy. Mama didn't raise no fool, and we'll wait for the game's fall 2008 release before getting too excited.
EA confirms Command & Conquer FPS Tiberium originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 09:58:00 EST. Apparently titled Tiberium, the game takes place after the third Tiberium War and places gamers in control of a GDI field commander armed with a GD-10, a special weapon with four firing configurations. The game features squad tactics and is described as "Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter meets Battlefield meets Rainbow Six Vegas." Frankly the this description isn't particularly evocative of anything, other than to remind us at least that said games were good. Other details include the ability to control specialized squads and vehicles and also the inclusion of special powers like calling in an orbital strike (an obvious nod to the RTS roots of the series). Little else is known about the game right now, though we expect more will come to light when the next Game Informer hits the shelves.

[Via Joystiq]
Rumor: C&C FPS "Tiberium" headed to 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 16:45:00 EST. Featured on the cover of said issue - evidenced by the totally crappy pic over to the right - is a new FPS in the Command & Conquer universe titled Tiberium. Lending credence to the rumor is Game Informer's recent addiction to debuting games on their cover: Borderlands in September, Dead Space in October, Brutal Legend in November, and Ghostbusters in December.

VideoGamesBlogger.com has some additional details of the game, most notably that it's an FPS as opposed to the series' usual RTS format (though not the first C&C FPS, remember Renegade?); it's set 11 years after the end of the third Tiberium war (C&C fanfic writers, get to work); and is a squad-based shooter "described as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter meets Battlefield meets Rainbow Six Vegas." Wow, that must've been some meeting.

[Thanks, Supa]
Rumor: Command & Conquer FPS inbound, dubbed 'Tiberium' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 02:00:00 EST. Unfortunately, the footage is purely cutscene and doesn't show any gameplay, but it does feature some pretty explosions and more of Kane's alleged baddass attitude. It also gives more insight into the NOD perspective on this contention. Xboxygen has a 720p version available for download, should you be interested.
