Instead, Activision has supposedly been thinking about putting out their own peripheral to interact with the game, bundling it with the upcoming title. <br /><br />Something that boggles our mind is the mentioning that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/neversoft">Neversoft</a> would not be developing the next <em>Tony Hawk </em>game. Considering that Neversoft produced a long-standing series from scratch and sustained it for many iterations, we'd be hard-pressed to think that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/activision">Activision</a> would take them off of the franchise. But, hey, that's just us.<br /><br />

We've seen so many game announcements this week, it's almost sort of refreshing to get to write a non-announcement. During <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/activision-enjoyed-2-9-billion-in-sales-last-year/">yesterday's Activision earnings call</a>, the company revealed that there would be no new console <em>Tony Hawk </em>game in 2008. If you can believe it, it's the first time the game hasn't gotten an annual release since <em>Tony Hawk's Pro Skater</em> first ollied into the nation's heart in 1999.<br /><br />Though we can understand if some of you are bummed without your yearly <em>Hawk </em>infusion, we couldn't be happier. After getting its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/skate-outsells-tony-hawk-nearly-2-to-1/">clock cleaned 2 to 1</a> by <em>Skate</em>, it seems like the perfect time for Activision to regroup, lick its wounds and, you know, put some effort into the series.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/05/09/no-console-tony-hawk-in-08-we-lament/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/no-tony-hawk-in-2008/">No Tony Hawk in 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 08:30:00 EST. Activision's recent conference call didn't consist entirely of gloating about those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/activision-q4-sales-up-80-to-1-48-billion/">record holiday-quarter sales</a>, as the publisher also took the opportunity to outline some of its plans for 2008. It seems we're in for quite the party, albeit one where you'll actually remember <em>everybody</em>'s name. Guitar Hero? James Bond? Tony Hawk? Spider-Man? Yeah, we've met.<br /><br />According to a <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117980462.html?categoryid=20&amp;cs=1"><em>Variety</em> report</a>, the aforementioned party will see multiple performances by The Instrument Protagonists, due to promote two <em>Guitar Hero</em> "add-ons" in Spring and a full sequel in Fall. While party animals debate the game tie-ins to animated films <em>Kung Fu Panda</em> and <em>Madagascar 2</em>, suave gentleman will attempt to decrypt <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/James-Bond/">James Bond</a>'s film adaptation, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/25/possible-title-of-james-bonds-next-game-announced/"><em>Quantum of Solace</em></a>. A roughly equal amount of solace will be found by the comic fans huddled around the punch bowl, as new <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SpiderMan/">Spider-Man</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Marvel%20Ultimate%20Alliance">Marvel Ultimate Alliance</a></em> games are expected to knock on the door at some point during the festivities.<br /><br />Finally, don't expect <em>Tony Hawk</em> to be turned away (he's on the guest list), especially since he's bringing his friend ... uh ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty4"><em>Call of Duty</em></a>? We honestly don't know where we're going with this analogy. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/02/activisions-200.html">The Cut Scene</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/activisions-2008-promises-more-guitar-hero-james-bond-spider/">Activision's 2008 promises more Guitar Hero, James Bond, Spider-Man</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 06:30:00 EST. According to EA, <em>skate </em>managed to outsell <em>Tony Hawk</em> almost two to one (we're assuming the call is referring to <em>Proving Ground</em>, the most recent <em>Tony Hawk</em> title). This figure doesn't take the Playstation 2 version of <em>Proving Ground</em> into account, which seems fair considering <em>skate</em> was only available on current generation consoles. Honestly, the fact that the first iteration of a brand new franchise could outsell <em>Tony Hawk</em> speaks volumes. Looks like it's time for an overhaul if Tony wants to get back on top.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/skate-vs-tony-hawk-skate-wins/">Skate vs. Tony Hawk: skate wins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 14:30:00 EST. Anyone who's spent even a little time rocking out to <em>Guitar Hero III</em> has likely noticed the game's heavy-handed approach to product placement, with stages littered with cans of Red Bull and billboards hocking everything from Axe Body Spray to Pontiac. The whole thing feels oppressive and graceless as even the game's underground rock venues are reduced to feeling like props to corporate shilling. And things are likely to get worse before they get better, as Activision today announced that it has inked a deal with Microsoft-owned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/massive">Massive</a> to provide in-game ads in not only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarhero3"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a>, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tonyhawk/"><em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em></a> as well. <br /><br />The two titles have been added to the growing Massive Network advertising collective, which also includes Activision's <em>Transformers </em>adaptation, and will made to include "contextually relevant" dynamic ads. Interestingly, it's unclear if this partnership extends to all versions of the affected (afflicted?) games, or just those for Microsoft's console. What is clear, however, is that as games are now a big business, more and more companies are beginning to get in line for their slice of the money pie, and while game companies and advertisers reap the benefits of this arrangement, gamers are left holding the controller wondering just when their games became interactive commercials.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/guitar-hero-tony-hawk-getting-in-game-ad-treatment/">Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk getting in-game ad treatment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 11:57:00 EST. That's probably why he got a whole line of games bearing his name. And, following the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/wii-releases-for-the-week-of-october-15th/">release</a> of his latest title, Tony conducted an interview with Eurogamer to discuss the new game and, more interesting to us Wii-loving folk, the new <em>Wii Fit </em>peripheral and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/new-channel-blowout-everybodys-nintendo-mii-contest-and-more/">Channel</a> coming from Nintendo. As if you didn't think about its use for skateboarding titles yourself ...<br /><br />So, Tony thinks it could be done, using the <em>Wii Fit</em> board as a control device for his game. "I think it's possible to incorporate the Wii Fit board into one of our games, but it would change the control scheme dramatically and we'd have to figure out how to make that work," he comments, further adding "So I don't know yet."<br />While we'd argue that performing ollies and navigating a skater's route in the environment could easily be done with the device, we wonder if we would have the ability to successfully bust big chains using the Wiimote in combination with the board, as we can easily do so with a more traditional controller setup.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/tony-hawk-talks-wii-fit-board-as-a-controller/">Tony Hawk talks Wii Fit board as a controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 09:45:00 EST. How good does it feel to have a traditional <em>Tony Hawk </em>game finally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/wii-releases-for-the-week-of-october-15th/">release</a> on the Wii? It feels good to us, or, rather, it <em>will</em> feel good when we give the game a rental this weekend. We're fairly certain that should the title lack any kind of engaging controls that maximize the use of the Wiimote and nunchuk, the <em>Tony Hawk</em> formula itself is something that will make up for it, as we enjoy it in and of itself (sheesh, we've bought almost <em>all of them</em>). Since we can't skate well like Eric Koston above or any other professional skater, we like pretending we can in video games, at least.<br /><br />Any of you checking out <em>Proving Ground</em> or one of the other releases this week? What are you going to play?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/wrup-busting-phat-grinds-edition/">WRUP: Busting phat grinds edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 16:00:00 EST. This week, plenty of games are waiting for eager new players to pick them up and save them from the boring life of sitting on some store's shelf. The most notable title for us is the latest entry in the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/complete-roster-of-skaters-for-proving-ground/">Tony Hawk</a> </em>franchise, <em>Proving Ground</em>. It's a return to the roots of the franchise and nothing like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/03/tony-hawk-downhill-jam-gameplay-video/"><em>Downhill Jam</em></a>. We can't wait to see how it plays on the Wii.<br /><br />Releases for the week of October 15th are:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em></li>
    <li><em>Guilty Gear XX Accent Core</em></li>
    <li><em>Mercury Meltdown: Revolution</em></li>
    <li><em>Rockstar Games Table Tennis</em></li>
    <li><em>Avatar: The Burning Earth</em></li>
    <li><em>Backyard Football</em></li>
    <li><em>Legend of Spyro: Eternal Night</em></li>
    <li><em>Victorious Boxers</em></li>

Those who downloaded the new demo for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/12/tony-hawk-proving-ground-demo-now-live/"><em>Tony Hawk Proving Ground </em>demo on Xbox Live</a> may have spotted the above poster in the sample. The poster advertising <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/06/activision-hints-at-a-gun-sequel/">rumored sequel</a> "<em>GUN: Magruder's Ghost</em>" is either a really big tease or a really unconventional game announcement. Our heart says the latter, but, well, you can probably guess which one our brains say.<br /><br />If you want to see the poster for yourself, head down the hill at the beginning of the demo and keep on that road until you see a large stairway on your left. You'll find the poster at the top. We'll be a little too busy dreaming of Lance Henriksen-soaked gaming goodness.<br /><br />[Thanks, Squeedom]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/12/gun-sequel-poster-in-tony-hawk-proving-ground-demo/">GUN sequel poster in Tony Hawk Proving Ground demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 12:00:00 EST. For the first time in a very long time, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/TonyHawk/">Tony Hawk</a></em> has some real competition this year from EA's <em>Skate. </em>Though <em>Tony Hawk Proving Ground </em>has already won the award for most appropriate title of the year, the contest for the top skating franchise is still wide open. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/skate-demo-is-now-available-on-xbox-live-ps3-demo-coming-soon/">the <em>Skate </em>demo</a> already available, you can now officially lay odds on how the battle will pan out as the <em>THPG</em> demo backside kickflips its way on to Xbox Live.<br /><br />You've seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/16/todays-which-one-is-evil-comparison-skate-versus-tony-hawk/">the comparison videos</a>, now you can get some hands-on time with both. Here's the big question: Which one will you be getting? Will you welcome a new succinctly-titled overlord, or will you keep Tony in his throne?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/">Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/#346589"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/thpg_ps2_box_art_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/#346588"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/tony-hawks-proving-grou003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/#346587"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/tony-hawks-proving-grou001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/#346586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/tony-hawks-proving-grou002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/tony-hawks-proving-ground/#346585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/tony-hawks-proving-grou004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/12/tony-hawk-proving-ground-demo-now-live/">Tony Hawk Proving Ground demo now Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 09:30:00 EST. We're guessing good ole' Acti wants to prove to loyal <em>Tony Hawk</em> supporters that the latest installment not only lives up to its predecessors, but will eclipse them with new features like a video editor and a skate lounge. Good news for us is that there's already a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/skate-demo-ollies-onto-marketplace/"><em>skate</em> demo</a> on the Marketplace, so now we'll get a chance to test both skating games and award our seal approval to the best. But fret not rockers who dislike skating games, because the <em>GH III</em> demo will be available for download off the XBLM two weeks after <em>Proving Ground</em> hits retailers, sometime around October 23rd. Now we have a reason to get our X-plorer guitar tuned before October rolls around.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/gh-iii-demo-to-be-included-in-proving-ground/">GH III demo to be included in Proving Ground</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2007 08:45:00 EST. <em> Guitar Hero</em> fans rejoice, the demo for <em>Guitar Hero III</em> will be <a href="http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=261370">available</a> on the Xbox 360 version of <em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em> releasing October 9. Two weeks after that it will be available to download on Xbox Live Marketplace. The demo will feature:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Lay Down (by Priestess)</li>
    <li>Even Flow (by Pearl Jam)</li>
    <li>The Metal (by Tenacious D)</li>
    <li>Hit Me with your Best Shot (as made famous by Pat Benatar)</li>
    <li>Rock You like a Hurricane (as made famous by Scorpions)</li>
</ul>
We had a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/joystiq-hands-on-guitar-hero-iii/">positive experience</a> with <em>Guitar Hero III</em> during E3, despite its different look and feel, the gameplay is exactly what you expect from the series. What about the PS3 version of <em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em> having the <em>GH</em> <em>III</em> demo or release on PSN for those with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/review-pelican-ps2-to-ps3-controller-adapter/">adapter</a>? That's a very good question and one we made sure to ask Activision. Well, they told us to go ask Red Octane. We've sent emails to Red Octane and will update as soon as we get responses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/gh-iii-demo-on-tony-hawk-for-xbox-360-and-xbm-wheres-ps3/">GH III demo on Tony Hawk for Xbox 360 and XBM, where's PS3?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 18:27:00 EST. Being fans of the <em>Tony Hawk </em>franchise of games, we're anxious to get our hands on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/forget-downhill-jam-wii-gets-proper-tony-hawk-ga/">newest title</a> <em>Proving Ground</em>. 1UP was so kind as to publish a complete roster of skaters in <em>Proving Ground</em>, allowing us all to glimpse who we'll be busting 360 kickflips in the future. The roster looks a lot like the last Tony Hawk game, so die-hard fans of the older titles might be missing some of their favorites (oh, how we still miss you, Jamie Thomas!). 1Up even has some short bios, including screens, of the skaters in-game, for your viewing pleasure.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/complete-roster-of-skaters-for-proving-ground/">Complete roster of skaters for Proving Ground</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 16:40:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.playfrance.com/news-infos-tony-hawk-s-proving-ground-en-demo-187809.html">PlayFrance</a>, Activision has announced that the newest Tony Hawk game, <em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em>, will get a downloadable demo onto the PlayStation Store a little before Thanksgiving. If you've got a US account but aren't quite sure when those crazy Americans celebrate turkey day, this means to expect a demo around the third week of November.<br /><br />This is all well and good, but we can't forget that it <em>is</em> another Tony Hawk game. A lot of people have been saying that his titles have grown more and more stale throughout the years, so putting a demo up is risky. On the other hand, perhaps there is a lot of promise in the title and placing a demo up proves it. We'll see if<em> Proving Ground</em> really lives up to its name, or proves that it sucks, in November.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/activision-confirms-tony-hawk-demo-around-thanksgiving/">Activision confirms Tony Hawk demo around Thanksgiving</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 09:30:00 EST. Today's video picks compare the latest trailers for both games.<br /><br />Admittedly, we think the two titles can coexist, at least for this year. <em>Skate</em> is a completely <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/eas-skate-video-shows-off-flickit-controls/">different control</a> experience, while <em>Tony Hawk</em> is the latest in a solid franchise. We can see both games appealing to different -- or even the same -- gamers.<br /><br />And we're glad <em>Skate</em> is here to keep <em>Tony Hawk</em> honest. Do we really expect a 1.0 game to dethrone <em>Tony Hawk-we-stopped-counting-version-numbers</em>? Maybe not, but competition should make them both stronger.<br /><br />See the new trailers after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/16/todays-which-one-is-evil-comparison-skate-versus-tony-hawk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's which-one-is-evil comparison: Skate versus Tony Hawk</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/16/todays-which-one-is-evil-comparison-skate-versus-tony-hawk/">Today's which-one-is-evil comparison: Skate versus Tony Hawk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. Well, that's what the main theme in the debut <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=20583">trailer</a> for <em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground </em>is all about, choices. You'll be able to create a skater that reflects the kind of person you want to be, whether you're going for the rockstar mystique or just doing it for the pain. It's an interesting concept, but the gameplay footage doesn't look all that graphically impressive. Give the trailer a watch and consciously compare what Mr. Hawk has to offer with EA's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate">Skate</a></em>. Yesterday, EA released the <a href="http://www.gamertagradio.com/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=4397">song list</a> for their possible Tony Hawk killer <em>Skate</em>. Featured on the game's soundtrack are bands like Cheap Trick, The White Stripes, ZZ Top, and David Bowie giving <em>Skate</em> that edgy rock mix of skating fun. Complete list of songs that'll be available on the <em>Skate </em>soundtrack is available after the jump.<br /><br />We all know a soundtrack isn't going to dethrone Tony Hawk's iron grip on the skating genre, but we think <em>Skate</em>'s other features make it more than a worthy contender. The soundtrack is more or less "butta" on the skater toast.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/rockin-out-to-skates-soundtrack/">Rockin' out to Skate's soundtrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 14:30:00 EST. When it comes to games <em>not</em> called <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/halo3"><span style="font-style: italic;">Halo 3</span></a>, EA's Tony Hawk killer, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/skate"><span style="font-style: italic;">Skate</span></a>, is most definitely near the top of our "most anticipated" lists. In our last <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/joystiq-hands-on-skate/">preview</a>, we dumped an unbridled amount of praise upon it and for a very good reason: it embodies the feeling of skateboarding more than any game to date. For those of us who've spent our lives skating, getting our hands on this title was practically a spiritual experience.<br /><br />And so, we sought more information from the good folks at Canada's <a href="http://eacanada.ea.com/">EA Blackbox</a> and have returned with an in-depth interview with its creators. From online multiplayer to recorded films and why we won't be seeing female avatars, there's something for everyone in this <em>Skate</em> love-in.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/">skate.</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/#272757"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/#272756"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/#272755"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/#272754"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate/#272753"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/joystiq-interview-skates-ea-blackbox-new-screenshots/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Interview: Skate's EA Blackbox, new screenshots</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/joystiq-interview-skates-ea-blackbox-new-screenshots/">Joystiq Interview: Skate's EA Blackbox, new screenshots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 10:05:00 EST. For one, it's called <em>Tony Hawk Proving Ground</em> and will allow players to create "epic skate videos," hang out in a customizable Skate Lounge where friends can skate around, along with seamless single player and online integration. <br /><br />Let's hope that goes for the Wii and not just the other consoles it's available on.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/prove-yourself-in-new-tony-hawk-title/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/forget-downhill-jam-wii-gets-proper-tony-hawk-ga/">Forget Downhill Jam, Wii gets proper Tony Hawk game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2007 12:10:00 EST. Every month or so we get a new trick from this franchise and, frankly, we're tired of it. When the announcement rolled in about the new <em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em> we smirked and thought to ourselves: "yes, this is a proving ground to see if you're a viable gaming franchise, still." Other than that, complete apathy.<br /><br />Anyway, this new title to be released on the PS3 and 360 sports some revamped multiplayer, video editing, new modes (Nail-the-Trick was named), and a class system. Class system? For skaters? What, will one guy be pumping out buffer chants while the tank skater takes on the big tricks? Or will there be a homeless skater next to a sharp-looking business executive skater? We are interested to see how the multiplayer is changing and how in-depth the video editing tool will be. We'll keep you posted as information becomes available.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/tony-hawks-proving-ground-unveiled-apathy-ensues/">Tony Hawk's Proving Ground unveiled, apathy ensues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 May 2007 17:30:00 EST. Has your appetite for new-gen skateboarding games not been whetted by clips from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts'</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate"><em>Skate</em></a>? Among the new information revealed is the official title <em>Tony Hawk Proving Ground </em>and that the game will include a Nail-the-Trick mode, inclusion of skater classes, revamped multiplayer, and a new built-in video editor. The inclusion of a video editor is fantastic (reminds us of another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3">game</a>) and a beefier multiplayer is always welcome. <strike>EA</strike> Activision is going to have to pull out all the stops with <em>Tony Hawk Proving Ground</em>, because Mr. Hawk will be feeling some new competition from a little game called <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate">Skate</a></em>. As we have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/skate-slaps-tony-hawk-demands-satisfaction/">mentioned</a> myriad times before, the question on everyone's mind is whether or not <em>Skate</em> is better than <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/TonyHawk/">Tony Hawk</a></em>. According to Joystiq, the answer is an emphatic "Yes." <em>Skate </em>ditches the complex button combinations of <em>Tony Hawk</em> in favor of a slick, streamlined setup that relies on the analog sticks. The left stick controls your body and the right controls your feet. It takes some getting used to, but Joystiq has nothing but praise for the new system. Joystiq's conclusion: not only can <em>Skate</em> compete with <em>Tony Hawk</em>, it has already displaced it. There's just no way around it. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> knows this (they have to, they're EA). We've asked the <em>Tony Hawk</em> question repeatedly when discussing <em>Skate</em>. Is there any it can topple the <em>Hawk</em>? With their latest <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=3397">video</a>, it looks like EA is giving us their own answer. <em>Skate</em> looks to completely change the traditional control method of <em>Skating </em>games. There are no button holds and direction presses here. No, tricks (at least the ones without grabs) are controlled entirely with the right stick, EA calls these Flickit controls. Check out the video and weigh in one more time: does <em>Skate</em> stand a chance against <em>Tony</em>?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/eas-skate-video-shows-off-flickit-controls/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/skate-slaps-tony-hawk-demands-satisfaction/">Skate slaps Tony Hawk, demands satisfaction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 May 2007 18:15:00 EST. Originally released at the beginning of March, the trailer shows off Electronic Arts' more realistic take on the sport. <em>Skate</em> eschews the giant combos and tricks of <em>Tony Hawk</em> for a simpler and arguably more accurate version of skateboarding. If this video is anything to go by, you won't be landing many 900&deg;s in <em>Skate</em>. No, it seems that the idea is centered much more around landing simple, real world tricks. Whether or not that makes for an entertaining skateboarding game remains to be seen. Go download it and revel in the HD goodness. Of course, you could also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/02/new-skate-video-a-tony-hawk-killer/">watch</a> the streaming version that came out last month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/skate-trailer-grinds-onto-marketplace/">Skate trailer grinds onto Marketplace</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 10:05:00 EST. The rumored release date is Q3 2007 and the game is said to retail for $39.99 USD. The source of the rumor comes from Codename Revolution, who <a href="http://www.codenamerevolution.com/?p=4430">say</a> a distribution contact of theirs confirms the news. Still, even if it is true, is anyone even interested?<br /><br />The weird thing about BMX titles is that none have really enjoyed the success of the <em>Tony Hawk</em> series. That isn't for wanting, though, as the <a href="http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/itemsearch.asp"><em>Matt Hoffman</em></a> and <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sort=relevance&amp;termType=all&amp;ts=dave+mirra&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0"><em>Dave Mirra</em></a> games tried to enjoy the skateboarding game's success in the BMX world. These videos, however, have not contained a shred of actual gameplay footage. Instead, EA has attempted to build street cred by featuring real skaters talking about their passion. It's admirable that EA wants people to believe in their new franchise, but we opted to wait for some real footage to surface (not the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/01/new-skate-shots-can-it-topple-tony/">shaky cam</a> we featured before). Well, we've got some real footage now, and we're leaving it to you to tell us what you think. We know there are <em>Tony Hawk</em> fans out there, as well as fans of skating in general. Does this game look like the answer to your prayers, or is <em>Tony Hawk</em> still the king of the streets?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/ea-releases-actual-gameplay-footage-of-skate-ps3-360/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/02/new-skate-video-a-tony-hawk-killer/">New Skate video: a Tony Hawk killer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2007 13:30:00 EST. Looking at the screenshots the game appears to be coming along very nice on the graphical front. The pretty reflections, shadows, and textures look much better than <em>Tony Hawk's Project 8</em>. We'll just have to see if the gameplay will match that of Tony's, but we definitely see promise in the presentation of <em>Skate</em>. Anyone ready to ditch their Tony Hawk and pick up <em>Skate,</em> or is it way to early to commit?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/16/new-skate-screenshots-roll-in/">New Skate screenshots roll in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 13:30:00 EST. In short, the shots looks amazing -- then again, so did the target renders for next gen <em>Madden</em>, and we all know how <em>that</em> turned out. Still, EA knows a successful genre when they see it, and it's up to them to <strike>exploit it</strike> try and make it better. The obvious question is whether or not <em>Skate</em> can hold a candle to the current king of skating the <em>Tony Hawk</em> series. Given the reception of <em>Project 8</em>, that might be a tough order to fill. Watch Joystiq's video after the break and join the discussion.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/01/new-skate-shots-can-it-topple-tony/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Skate shots, can it topple Tony?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/01/new-skate-shots-can-it-topple-tony/">New Skate shots, can it topple Tony?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Dec 2006 17:30:00 EST. Whether you're a fan of skateboarding or gaming, the man has made an impact, often considered equal, in both cultures. With his first game being released way back when on the original Playstation, folks have had plenty of time to learn how to bust kickflips and grind massive rails in his games.<br /><br />His games on the GBA have been no joke, either. Featuring an isolated bird's eye view, previous games featured excellent 3D graphics and gameplay on the portable system. But where the old games were all about busting big lines and tearing up the course to your heart's content, this game is more of a racing game and, as such, you're limited in the tricks department.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ds-fanboy-review-tony-hawks-downhill-jam-gba/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (GBA)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ds-fanboy-review-tony-hawks-downhill-jam-gba/">DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (GBA)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 10:55:00 EST. With his first game being released way back when on the original Playstation, folks have had plenty of time to learn how to bust kickflips and grind massive rails in his games.<br /><br />Then, upon the launch of Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connect service, a little Tony Hawk game by the name of <span style="font-style: italic;">Tony Hawk's American Sk8land </span>released. Not only taking full advantage of Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connect service, the single-player and local multiplayer experience in the title were also excellent. Now, we receive the game's successor in <span style="font-style: italic;">Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam</span>. <span style="font-style: italic;"></span><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ds-fanboy-review-tony-hawks-downhill-jam-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (DS)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ds-fanboy-review-tony-hawks-downhill-jam-ds/">DS Fanboy Review: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (DS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 09:30:00 EST. Games-Aktuell, a German gaming outlet, has discovered that <em>Call of Duty 3</em> and <em>Tony Hawk's Project 8 </em>are not running at a 720p high-def resolution.</p>
<p>When the tests were run, <em>CoD3</em> was shown to be running at 1040x620 pixels and <em>THP8</em> at 1040x584 pixels. The pixel drop reflects a resolution drop of 30% and 34%, respectively<em>. The resolution drop could be assumed to help keep framerates up, but <em>THP8</em> reportedly has framerate problems. So what's up?<br /></em></p>
<em> </em>
<p><em>Activision Germany told Cynamite.de that they weren't aware of the problem and are looking into it. Lower resolution is not something that normally just happens by accident, but given the recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/09/cod2-vets-have-flashbacks-in-cod3-multiplayer/">quality assurance problems</a> with <em>CoD3</em>, these resolution problems may just be another woeful mistake. If intentional, why the resolution drop in <span style="font-style: italic;">THP8</span> when the 360 is clearly powerful enough to handle something like <em>Gears of War</em> just fine?</em></p>
<em> </em>
