Just days before the real life trauma of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2009">E3</a> takes hold, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atlus">Atlus</a> announced that it will localize the recently revealed <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/trauma-center">Trauma Center</a></em> successor, <em>Hospital</em>, as <em>Trauma Team</em> for the Wii in North America. As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/atlus-goes-beyond-trauma-center-for-new-wii-game-hospital/">previously noted</a>, the game will feature gameplay across six different medical fields, as players play as a general surgeon, diagnostician, E.M.T., orthopedic surgeon, endoscope technician, and medical examiner. <br /><br />Atlus hasn't yet sewn up all of the details, However, the game is expected to be among the publisher's titles on display during next week's show and we look forward to finding out more before <em>Trauma Team</em> scrubs in next Spring. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/">Trauma Team</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/#2042514"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/traumateam_screens_diagnostician_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/#2042515"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/traumateam_screens_endoscope_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/#2042516"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/traumateam_screens_medicalexaminer_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/#2042517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/traumateam_screens_orthopedics_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-team/#2042518"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/traumateam_screens_paramedic_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/atlus-opens-up-old-wounds-with-trauma-team-for-wii/">Atlus opens up old wounds with Trauma Team for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 May 2009 08:30:00 EST. Of the many things we look forward to when unwrapping a new game, box art ranks just above the new game smell and that little card that falls on the floor when the box is opened, quietly pleading for feedback. This is not the case, however, for Atlus creative designer Jeremy Cail, who makes it his job to judge books -- make that <em>games -- </em>by their cover, and in <a href="http://www.atlus.com/pd.php">a recent blog post</a> breaks down all of the effort that went into designing the cover for next month's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/traumacenter"><em>Trauma Center</em></a> sequel for the DS.<br /><br />Besides the differences between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/atlus-bringing-trauma-center-2-for-ds-stateside-before-japan/">North American</a> and Japanese boxes, the designer expounds on the virtues of title placement (can't have it be covered by the shelf, can we?) and the importance of Derek's glowing hand (Uh oh, it's <em>magic</em>). He also discusses the title itself, noting that <em>Under the Knife 2</em> was not the team's first choice, with subtitles such as "Surgeon's Oath" or "Under the Gun" also in the pot for consideration. And what of Nurse Angie's new maid cafe-inspired attire? Cail writes that "I hope that gives you cosplayers out there some extra inspiration this year at anime conventions." Man, it's like you read our minds. <em>Creepy</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/atlus-dissects-trauma-center-under-the-knife-2-box-art/">Atlus dissects Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 box art</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. Shocking! We'd expect disease in a game about making people feel better, but we hope that Atlus' game doesn't start taking itself <em>too</em> seriously. For this blogger, the otherwise excellent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/2008s-biggest-blips-advance-wars-days-of-ruin/"><em>Advance Wars: Days of Ruin</em></a> was a little too <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/12/nintendo-remembers-that-war-isnt-always-so-jovial/">dark</a> for its own good, and yours truly missed some of the inherent silliness of previous games<em>. </em>Here's hoping <em>Trauma Center 2</em> retains its sense of humor.<br /><em><br /></em>On the other hand, we appreciate that some of you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/trauma-center-2-has-a-storyline/">couldn't give two hoots</a> about the story. Atlus confirmed that <a href="http://www.atlus.com/tcutk2">the sequel</a>, which follows the 2005 release that made us all believe that we could cure cancer with a flick of the wrist, will make it to retail on July 1, offering new modes and operations for armchair surgeons. <br /><br />But wait, isn't that a full month before the game will be <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/04/02/trauma-center-2-scan-suggests-august-release-for-japan/">released in Japan</a>? Has the world gone topsy-turvy? We touched based with Atlus and learned that this is indeed the case -- not that the world had gone into a tailspin, but rather that we can expect to stitch up wounds vicariously through Derek and Angie before our friends overseas. The official we spoke to also noted that while the team struggled with a number of titles for the sequel "there really was no other more fitting thing to call the game than <em>Under the Knife 2</em>." Honestly, they can call it anything they want, just get it in our hands <em>STAT</em>!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/">Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/#739641"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/trcen2_hand_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/#739639"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/trcen2sutures2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/#739638"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/trcen2sutures1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/#739637"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/trcen2scanner1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/#739635"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/trcen2image0053_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/atlus-bringing-trauma-center-2-for-ds-stateside-before-japan/">Atlus bringing Trauma Center 2 for DS stateside before Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 23:00:00 EST. <em>Trauma Center</em>, in case you hadn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/dr-stiles-returns-to-the-ds-for-trauma-center-under-the-knife/">already heard</a>, is making a return to Nintendo's handheld to make ham-fisted would-be surgeons feel inadequate all over again, and <em>Famitsu </em>has just delivered an array of details and shots of the new game.<br /><br />According to this, we'll be getting a sprinkling of old and new characters, a slightly more Wii-like user interface, and a number of operations that will be familiar with us all, including the really cringeworthy ones where you have to yank <em>excruciatingly long</em> shards of glass from your patients (well, they made <em>us </em>cringe, anyway).<br /><br />Perhaps the most interesting tidbit to take from this scan, however, is the mention of a Japanese release date -- it's a little hard to make out, but the magazine seems to suggest the game will be released there on August 7th. That's by no means an <em>official</em> date, obviously, but if true it means we could be seeing a western release in 2008.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/trauma-center-2-scan-suggests-august-release-for-japan/">Trauma Center 2 scan suggests August release for Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 14:15:00 EST. <br />The <em>Nintendo Power</em> news just keeps on coming in! If you're not already a subscriber, we very much suggest you pick up a copy of this month's issue when you can -- it's packed with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/final-fantasy-iv-on-the-way-to-the-u-s/">exclusive announcements</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/new-5th-cell-game-revealed-lock-nation/">screenshots</a>. <br /><br />Almost three years since <em>Under the Knife</em> captured the hearts of wannabe surgeons on the DS, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/traumacenter">Trauma Center</a></em> is finally coming back to the handheld after a remake and an indirect sequel on the Wii. Dr. Stiles stars in the game, once again, and is joined by Nurse Angie Thompson as they deal with the effects and "unanswered mysteries" left by the defeated GUILT Virus.<br /><br />Developer and publisher <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Atlus/">Atlus</a> didn't reveal any new surgical instruments for this direct DS sequel, titled <em>Under the Knife 2</em>, but it did state that the old tools will have "improved functionality. Addressing difficulty complaints many often cited with the original game, Atlus has also included a mode for those of you with unsteady hands and frail nerves. Expect to hear a lot more about <em>Under the Knife 2</em> from us before it hits stores this summer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/dr-stiles-returns-to-the-ds-for-trauma-center-under-the-knife/">Dr. Stiles returns to the DS for Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. 'The road less traveled' seems the mantra for Irvine, California-based Atlus USA. With an impressive catalog of obscure titles to its credit, Atlus is looked to by many North American gamers as a beacon of originality, having localized such titles and franchises as <span style="font-style: italic;">Odin Sphere</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Persona</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Growlanser</span>, among many others. But why does this company remain dedicated to games of such niche appeal? Unable to come up with a consensus, we marched upon Atlus USA itself, and spoke with some of the employees who didn't duck out of sight when they saw us coming, including editor Clayton S. Chan, PR and sales assistant manager Aram Jabbari, production director Bill Alexander, and QA lead Victor Gonzalez.<br /><br />What did they have to say? Read the complete interview, including in-depth insight into the company's upcoming PS2 and Wii 'hardcore' dungeon crawler <span style="font-style: italic;">Baroque</span>, after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/">Baroque</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/#602578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/baroque-footagee8946dbe1c83b7e_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/#602577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/baroque-footagee5062b321c83b7f_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/#602575"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/baroque-footagedb430b021c83b7e_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/#602574"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/baroque-footaged4b958361c83b7e_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/baroque-2/#602573"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/baroque-footagecae8e96a1c83b7f_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/joystiq-interview-atlus-goes-for-baroque-talks-future-plans/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq interview: Atlus goes for Baroque, talks future plans</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/joystiq-interview-atlus-goes-for-baroque-talks-future-plans/">Joystiq interview: Atlus goes for Baroque, talks future plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 11:45:00 EST. <br />Yeah, we know what you're thinking: "Each and every member of the DS Fanboy team is <em>pretty much perfect</em>, so why the heck would such unblemished, shining beacons of humanity require New Year's resolutions?" We thought the <em>exact same thing</em>, before we each took a minute to stare deeply into the recesses of our souls, and realize that even we -- <em>WE!</em> -- could take steps to improve ourselves. And here's how we plan to go about it:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/alisha-karabinus/">Alisha</a>: I promise to try not to go crazy and pee myself every time Square Enix remakes a game they've remade before, but it's going to be very, very difficult, and I will probably fail. Ask me again tomorrow.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/david-hinkle/">David</a>: This year, I resolve to beat <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/contra-4"><em>Contra 4</em></a> in front of a live studio audience. I will then reap the benefits and rewards of having a studio full of people not know who I am or what I am doing look at me with faces full of confusion as I rip my shirt off in conquest and scream wildly.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher/">JC</a>: I resolve to play one of those RTS or SRPG or TRPG games. I've always believed I wasn't smart enough to play these things, while simultaneously believing that I was smart enough to pursue advanced degrees.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/candace-savino/">Candace</a>: I resolve that I will resist my urge to download the entire catalog of Phoenix Wright songs onto my cell phone. But not really.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/chris-greenhough">Chris</a>: To not see in another New Year with gaming's answer to high-class narcotics, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/animal-crossing"><em>Animal Crossing Wild World</em></a>. Also, to finally wrap up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/traumacenter"><em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife</em></a>, by which time I fully expect to boast the dexterity of <em>an actual surgeon</em>.<br /></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/eric-caoili/">Eric</a>: I resolve to never trust a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/04/luminous-arc-2-loves-big-butts-and-it-cannot-lie/">big butt</a> and a smile. That girl is poison. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6blgjF6UkU">Poison</a>.</li>
</ul>

If, like us, you've been wondering where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atlus">Atlus'</a> creativity went with its terribly plain <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/14/wii-warm-up-well-its-medical-ish/"><em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em> boxart</a>, you'll be happy to hear that we managed to find some of it in the latest issue of <em>Nintendo Power</em>. While not as hilarious or ridiculous as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/geometry-wars-galaxies-ad-is-out-of-this-world/"><em>Geometry Wars: Galaxies</em> piece</a> we featured late last week, this blood transfusion ad we spotted certainly is creative. <p><em>Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em></p>
<p>Thought of by many as the "Disney of video gaming," Nintendo has crafted themselves an image of family-friendly entertainment. But to certain generations and classes of gamers, the term "family-friendly" is synonymous with "kiddy," and immediately sparks disinterest. But ever since publishing Rare's <em>Killer Instinct</em>, they've been working on broadening the public's perspective. Trying to appeal to the bloodlust of the <em>Mortal Kombat</em> crowd didn't give them any headway, and as generations progressed and they've garnered more "mature-themed" titles, they still haven't been able to shake the "kiddy console" stigma. </p>
<p>Even after snagging the exclusivity to the <em>Resident Evil</em> series for a generation, Nintendo was largely overlooked by the Playstation-bred gamers that were brought up on the series. How much more will it take for Wii to be regarded as a platform that can satisfy the tastes of mature gamers? </p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/revolutionary-this-revolution-hasnt-been-televised/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: This Revolution Hasn't Been Televised</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/revolutionary-this-revolution-hasnt-been-televised/">Revolutionary: This Revolution Hasn't Been Televised</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 20:45:00 EST. It's just good, clean, surgical fun, and the forthcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/trauma-center-new-blood-announced/"><em>New Blood</em></a> just looks <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/trauma-center-new-blood-costume-not-included/">awesome</a>. It's just this box art we're not sure about. Maybe it's just us, but it seems so ... plain. So mundane. So <em>not</em> in-keeping with the other games. What do you think of it?<br /><br />Look, don't get us wrong. We're likely to sink an unhealthy number of hours into it anyway, because that's what we do in the seven minutes of spare time we have per week. It's just that sometimes, we're forced to shake our heads over boxart decisions, and this is one of those times.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/14/wii-warm-up-well-its-medical-ish/">Wii Warm Up: Well, it's medical ... ish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Oct 2007 10:30:00 EST. In the battle for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BoxArt/">retail shelf eye candy</a>, there are some games that prefer to go the rout of foil-embossed cardboard slip covers, while others prefer a more subtle, tasteful approach. Take for example Atlus' upcoming <em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em> for the Wii, which replaces the anime styling of the first game's box art with a plain cross as if to say '<em>I'm the medicine Wii owners have been searching for.</em>' <br /><br />Interestingly, the box also carries the logo for Nintendo's free Wi-Fi Connection service, though despite the addition of local multiplayer, a quick call to Atlus confirmed that <em>New Blood</em>'s online influence will only be felt through leaderboards, meaning if you want to throw down scalpels over a patient with a debilitating hematoma, you'd best be prepared to do it <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/trauma-center-new-blood-vid-shows-why-four-hands-are-better-tha/">side by side</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/trauma-center-new-blood-box-art-keeps-things-simple/">Trauma Center: New Blood box art keeps things simple</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 16:55:00 EST. <p>Atlus disappointed gamers with <em>Trauma Center: Second Opinion</em> for Wii, offering up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/27/wii-trauma-center-a-remake-not-a-sequel/">an uninspired remake</a> of the DS original, but the company is out to make amends with armchair surgeons in <em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em>. The sequel promises new features, missions, and characters, as well as a new cooperative mode, which will let you and a partner hack at a virtual patient for both points and living room bragging rights. <em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em> ships to retail on November 20, giving you plenty of time to sharpen your slicing and dicing skills.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/trauma-center-new-blood-vid-shows-why-four-hands-are-better-tha/">Trauma Center: New Blood vid shows why four hands are better than two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 02:15:00 EST. What's more fun than waiting around for a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/trauma-center-new-blood-announced/"><em>Trauma Center</em></a>? Getting an update on the title every week like clockwork. Today, Atlus debuted <em>Trauma Center </em>Tuesday, and they plan to put something new -- be it video, screens, or info -- on the site every week. The first update consists of the above commercial, which shows off a little coop mode ... as well as one particular gameplay style we do not recommend. Sometimes, cosplay and gaming just don't mix.<br /><br />Though we must say, latex gloves probably cut down on Wiimote <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/nintendo-cares-about-wiimote-safety/">slippage</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/trauma-center-new-blood-costume-not-included/">Trauma Center: New Blood -- costume not included</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 15:00:00 EST. It should make for an interesting award session, because while the Wii is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">dominating console sales</a> (along with the DS), many people see games like <span style="font-style: italic;">Gears of War</span> as greater achievements. Despite that, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/wii-sports-wins-game-of-the-year-award-in-time-magazine/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span></a> leads the pack of nominations, having picked up the greatest number of nominations; the pack-in boasts nods in seven categories, including Gameplay and Multiplayer.<br /><br />It's not the only Wii title to pick up recognition, however; <span style="font-style: italic;">The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Trauma Center: Second Opinion</span> are up for awards, along with a few other games. But today is a day for honesty (because, uh, we said so), so we thought we might discuss those flies in the ointment. From issues with "blue" in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=brain+age"><em>Brain Age</em></a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=trauma+center"><em>Trauma Center</em></a> adding even <em>more</em> difficulty when arbitrarily deciding you've done something wrong, we've seen dark spots in even the best of what the DS has to offer. Of course, that leads to another question: could that explain why, despite all of the great games on our favorite handheld, the reviews often seem a little <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/ds/">lower</a>, on average, than games for other systems? Or is there another reason that you suspect?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/ds-daily-its-great-but/">DS Daily: It's great, but ....</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atlus">Atlus</a> gave away this little surgery-sim souvenir last week at E3, but we've seen it pop up on a few sites and even an eBay auction already, so you might be able to snatch one for yourself if you're intent on acquiring every single piece of <em>Trauma Center</em> merchandise. While the "syringe pen" concept is nothing new, this particular novelty item seems tailor-made for the sequel's title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/trauma-center-new-blood-announced/">New Blood</a></em>.<br /><br />For those of you who're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-trauma-center-sequel-is-going-where/">still upset</a> that the series seems to have completely defected the Wii, you could always try to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/27/diy-ds-lite-stylus-pen/">replace its ink contents with a stylus</a>. Maybe that'll <em>inject</em> some new life into <em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife</em>? Did you see what we did there? <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/">Trauma Center: New Blood</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/#305539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_12.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/#305538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_11.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/#305537"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_4.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/#305536"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_3.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood-1/#305535"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_2.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/2007/07/17/back-with-a-lot-of-finds/">GameSniped</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/20/promotional-trauma-center-pen-draws-new-blood/">Promotional Trauma Center pen draws New Blood</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 11:25:00 EST. <br />
For such a popular console that tries to offer something for everyone, the Wii also manages to be somewhat controversial -- and we're not just talking about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/ny-times-says-r-rated-movies-are-gorier-than-ao-manhunt-2/"><em>Manhunt 2</em></a> here. The motion-sensing controls have been a bone of contention when it comes to nearly every game, even those people seem to enjoy. Some gamers find them awesome, and others ... not so much. We've selected six games which cover a range of game types (and aren't all first-party, either) as a measuring stick of what you think is best when it comes to Wii controls. We encourage you to vote early (and often!), but feel free to talk about other choices in the comments, as well as the reasons behind your picks.<br />
<br />
You might have noticed that <em>Wii Sports</em> isn't on this list (and neither are several other well-received games!). We considered including it, because not everyone agrees that it works quite well as a showcase of the Wii control capabilities, but decided at the last minutes to include only non-bundled games. Feel free to voice your support for <em>Wii Sports</em> in the comments, however!<br />

But <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/trauma-center-new-blood-announced/">today's announcement</a> ruins everything. We hate you, Mr. Johnny-Come-Lately Wii, because you stole our <em>Trauma Center</em>.<br /><br />Listen, we think it's keen and all that <em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em> is going to do what the first Wii port didn't -- that is, feature actual character voices and video. Y'know, the sort of things one expects from a console game. The text adventure style of the DS game suited the DS just fine, but once the game made the jump to the Wii, we expected a lot of things we didn't get. We also think the <strike><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/23/iron-cooking-mama/">Iron Surgeon</a></strike> new coop play mode is pretty keen. But why can't we have a little piece of the action on our handheld? Are we supposed to be satisfied with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/lifesigns-schedules-operations-for-june/"><em>Lifesigns</em></a>? We're certainly pleased about the localization of another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/lifesigns/">medical-themed game</a>, but we want our <em>Trauma Center</em>! We require gut-wrenchingly difficult gameplay and the satisfaction of <em>touching</em> during surgery. <br /><br />We know it's a bit rich to complain about Atlus, considering the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/atlus-confirms-ontama-touch-detective-sequel-draglade-for-us/">flood of announcements</a> today. But really, why have they taken away our surgery game? We're so sad. You've cut out our hearts, Atlus ... and the healing touch of other new games just isn't enough.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-trauma-center-sequel-is-going-where/">The Trauma Center sequel is going where?!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 18:05:00 EST. Quirky game champion, <a href="http://www.atlus.com">Atlus USA</a>, today announced several new games to be shown during the <a href="http://e307.joystiq.com">E3 media summit</a>. Featuring medical professionals, touchy-feely detectives and gyrating combatants (sadly not in the same game), the lineup focuses primarily on the Nintendo DS. <br /><br /><em><strong>Draglade</strong></em> (Nintendo DS)<br /><br />It's a <em>beat</em> 'em up, you see, where "it's not just about how hard you hit or fast you move, it's also how well you can groove." Released in Japan earlier this year, <em>Draglade</em> features clashing combatants equipped with "glades," weapons that emit distinct sounds when struck against something -- preferably your opponent's head. With the sounds of battle forming a symphony of destruction, we're half expecting a playable Pied Piper character.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/atlus-usa-announces-new-games-for-e3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Atlus USA announces new games for E3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/atlus-usa-announces-new-games-for-e3/">Atlus USA announces new games for E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 16:30:00 EST. Famitsu unveiled today a brand new way to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/traumacenter">play doctor on the Wii</a>: <em>Trauma Center: New Blood</em>. The biggest new feature will be a two player cooperative mode that lets you and a friend hack into bodies/save lives together. Sounds like the perfect activity for couples' counseling sessions, as well. <em>New Blood</em> will also feature a fresh cast of characters, new missions, and online leaderboards to see who's the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/24/study-gamers-make-better-surgeons-duh/">handiest with a scalpel</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/">Trauma Center: New Blood</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/#305520"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_12.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/#305519"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_11.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/#305518"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_4.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/#305517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_3.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trauma-center-new-blood/#305516"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/h-103_74915_2.jpg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/trauma-center-new-blood-wii-unveiled/">Trauma Center: New Blood (Wii) unveiled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 10:59:00 EST. Each day, a different member of the staff will present their personal top five DS games along with a snapshot of their gaming paraphernalia and habits, in an effort to provide our readers with a little more information on the tastes and personalities of our writers.</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span>It's odd; in the past two years, I've played my DS more than any other system, console or otherwise. However, I very rarely play outside of the comfort of my own room. Sure, I have the ten minute bus ride to campus everyday, and an hour break between classes, but the bus ride is relaxing and the hour I spend on campus, playing chess with some friends. It's really a testament to the quality of the library on the DS, that it would stand against the heavy-hitting consoles without the added advantage of portability.<br /><br />I'm a bit of a Renaissance gamer, playing titles far and wide. Sure, I've grown tired of the World War II shooters, but if a game is innovative and/or well-crafted, I'll give it a shot. I also like bunnies and salsa dancing and figure skating; I'm so <em>macho</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/ds-fanboy-favorites-jasons-top-five/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Favorites: Jason's top five</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/ds-fanboy-favorites-jasons-top-five/">DS Fanboy Favorites: Jason's top five</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. He knows the ins and outs, and (we imagine) has a large love for the medium. We'll tell you what he <a href="http://corybarlog.blogspot.com/2007/02/demo-time.html">doesn't</a> love though: his newly-acquired Wii. Upon getting the gift and opening it, Cory contributes "It was fun...but the wow factor wore off fairly quick."<br /><br />He goes on to talk a bit about the game he wanted to play most (how that wasn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>Twilight Princess</em></a>, we'll never know), saying "The one game I wanted to play, Trauma Center, was definitely a bit of a let down. The wiimote was woefully inaccurate and sapped the fun of the game. The Wii sports golf and bowling was cool...the boxing is freaking terrible though. In the end I hope to see some cool games come out of it, though it has me worried that the whole 'what new thing can you do with the controller' fad will wear off after awhile and I will have left is a much slimmer wireless gamecube." We can't say we share his opinions, but what about you guys? Do you think the system is headed where he sees it going?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/god-of-war-dev-thinks-wii-gets-boring-quickly/">God of War dev thinks Wii gets boring quickly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 14:35:00 EST. It has new graphics and new missions, which is everything on paper making it out to be a new game experience. Has Atlus succeeded or did gamers have enough of surgery on their DS? The critics say:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/745/745710p1.html">IGN - 80%</a>: "<em>Putting aside the fact that Second Opinion is a retelling of the DS version, the game is absolutely perfect as an introductory game for Wii players. There's a ton of diversity in the missions, an all-new Hard mode for previous fans of the series, and an entirely new sixth chapter of the game to appease the "been there, done that" attitude of the hardcore crowd.</em>"</li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/wii/adventure/traumacentersecondopinion/review.html">GameSpot - 80%</a>: "<em>This is about as unorthodox of a launch title for a new game system as they come, but then again, the Wii is pretty unorthodox too. So maybe it shouldn't come as any surprise that the game and the console make a great match. Trauma Center: Second Opinion isn't going to wow anybody with its presentation, yet it's got so much inventive gameplay and takes such a spirited approach to its subject matter that it still stands out from the crowd.</em>"</li>

While nothing has been confirmed or denied by Nintendo, it makes for some interesting conversation. </p>
<p>Some signs were spotted at the Nintendo World event in Japan warning older players but there is still no word if the rumors are real. If the grandparents, great-grandparents or anyone esle in the family with a pacemaker wants to get in on the games, family members beware. You could end up with a real life <em>Trauma Center</em> on your hands. No one wants that! </p>

Our local store was selling <em>Super Moneky Ball: Banana Blitz</em>, <em>Trauma Center: Second Opinion</em>, <em>Call of Duty 3</em>, and <em>GT Pro Series </em>(other titles were in stock but explicitly embargoed until launch day). Of course, supplies and availability may vary at your local store, so call ahead first if you're planning on jumping the gun.<br /><br />While you obviously won't be able to actually play the games until you have your hands on the system this weekend, you can stand them up next to your <a href="http://www.infendo.com/2006/10/infendo-exclusive-wii-goodies-at.html">Wii accessories from Target</a> and stare at them lovingly as you count down the seconds.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/gamestop-selling-some-wii-games-early/">Gamestop selling some Wii games early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 11:30:00 EST. Looks alone were winning Morelle over until she was handed a controller and clumsily gyrated herself into embarrassment playing <em>WarioWare</em>. A few rounds of <em>Wii Sports</em> didn't help -- the awkwardness only grew. After <em>Trauma Center </em>and <em>Excite Truck </em>the playtest had improved to just "so far, so OK." Enter: <em>Twilight Princess</em>.<br />
<br />
To Nintendo's surprise, it wasn't the disjointed inanity of <em>WarioWare</em> or the "swing away" nature of <em>Wii Sports</em> -- as Morelle notes, some just lack sporting ability -- that would win over the uninitiated. Instead, Morelle reveals that narrative lifted her veil of skepticism; a sense that her movements and the characters on screen were combining to create a coherent story.<br />
<br />
Nintendo should not underestimate the power of its key franchises to command emotional attachments (<em>like, go easies on the party games, 'kay?</em>). Marked by intuitive control, Wii might be (so-called) videogame-phobes' best shot at understanding these narratives that we hold so close to our hearts.<br />
<br />

We would expect nothing less. </p>
<p><em>Electroplankton</em> and <em>Brain Age</em> both picked up nominations in multiple categories, and they'll be butting heads (brains?) when it comes to which game is Britain's choice for the most innovative of the year. <em>Trauma Center</em> got a nod as well in the simulation category. We're not sure the other nominees are even worth mentioning next to<em> that</em> one. Too bad there isn't a category for games that make you sweat, 'cause they're just that damned hard at times. <em>Trauma Center</em> has always made us idly wish for a third hand, but we love it like ice cream. Can't say we agree with everything they're doing across the pond, though -- they've got <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> tagged as a children's game. Oh well. I guess we should all put it down and step away slowly. </p>
<p>The winners will be announced on October 5. Check back for confetti and poppers when the DS snags some awards.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/12/ds-gets-some-love-from-bafta/">DS gets some love from BAFTA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Sep 2006 16:45:00 EST. Now if only we could get someone to translate the text! Oh well, the pretty-pretty pictures are enough for a lazy Tuesday afternoon. <br /><br />Look closely, too, for an inset that appears to compare the DS original with the expanded "Wiimake" that will launch with the new console. <br /><br />Is it just us, or could this be one of the best games to introduce a world of irregular gamers to the Wii? Considering the popularity of medical-themed shows, we're thinking the only better possibility could be <em>CSI: Wii</em>. Wait, not better ... make that <em>other</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/22/tantalizing-trauma-center-scans/">Tantalizing Trauma Center scans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Aug 2006 16:05:00 EST. Regardless, the upcoming launch title <em>Trauma Center: Second Opinion</em> has garnered quite a bit of hype, and the latest issue of <em>Famitsu</em> has some details.<br /> <br /> Unfortunately, <em>Second Opinion</em> will primarily be a retelling of the original DS title. The game does add a few extra missions (broken bones and heart transplants were mentioned) and several new characters, but Atlas is hoping that the Wiimote will offer up an experience fresh enough to warrant a repurchase from surgery vets. Three difficulty settings are now available (thank insert-your-deity-of-choice-here), and the game will be fully voice-acted. <em>Please</em>, Atlus, get a decent crew for the voice work.<br /> <br /> Is this a cop-out, a scam, a ripoff? Is a fresh coat of paint enough to convince you to relive X6: Paraskevi? Will Derek ever hook up with Angie? Tune in at launch...and we might find out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/27/trauma-center-second-opinion-details/">Trauma Center: Second Opinion details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jul 2006 07:30:00 EST. This should come as most excellent news to those who have experienced difficulty in getting their gloved hands on one of the best DS titles available, as well as to those who simply enjoy slashing a stranger's spleen into tiny, unrecognizable pieces. <br /><br />Jim Ireton, the VP of Sales and Marketing for Atlus USA, notes that the "continued demand for <em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife</em> is both gratifying and overwhelming. We apologize to Nintendo fans who've had a tough time finding the game, and we hope this scratches their surgical itch until we ship <em>Trauma Center: Second Opinion</em> for the Wii later this year." Apology accepted, Mr. Ireton. <br /><br />Rejected titles for this post:<br />
