The first thing we noticed when we stepped into the Showcase Pavillion at this year's E3: This is really quite small. The second thing we noticed: Everyone seems to be dancing! Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be someone (usually with a Wii Remote/Nunchuk in hand) waggling about to some vary hard-to-hear music. But don't just take our word or it. Check out our video montage of just some of the dancing fools on this year's show floor. See if you can guess which dancers are random attendees and which ones are PR people who've been assigned to pretend to be interested in dancing these same steps ALL DAMN DAY. Fun!
Games shown (in order of appearance):
You have to give it to Tom Clancy: He hasn't let his success keep him from trying his hand at new things. One of his latest of these ventures is HAWX, a new action flight game that I got a chance to play during E3. I only got to sample the multiplayer, but what I saw left me really impressed.

At first, the game seems a fairly common take on the genre: You coast around in a strikingly realistic world that's been generated by Google Maps. When you find a target, you can either paint them with heat-seeking missiles or blast them with machine guns (the latter of which I never had much luck with).

Where the game really shines though is when you take the safety off. With the press of a button, the camera pans back, and you suddenly have much more control of the plane. Suddenly, you can evade missiles much more easily and do 180 degree mid-air turns on a dime. It takes a little to get the hang of it, but, once you do, it feels like no other flight game I've played.

The structure of the multiplayer is fairly innovative too. Though I was in a 2-on-2 match, you can have up to eight players going at it. The mode was a basic deathmatch, with you scoring points for bringing down enemies. What made it feel different was the Support system, which maybe be fairly familiar to fans of Call of Duty 4.

As you get kills, the support bar begins to fill. Once the bar is full, you can activate support and get one of a range of different effects. How powerful the support item is depends on how much of a lead you have or, alternately, how far behind you are. For example, when my extremely generous tutors were down zip to five, they were able to activate an item that made my plane stall. When they were down by 9, they gained insanely powerful stealth, which let them hammer away at me while I had no way to locate them or defend myself.

It's not, I'm told, a way to balance lower skilled players with higher skilled players, but rather a way for a team to have a shot of bringing themselves back from the brink of destruction. I think of it as sort of an inverse of CoD 4's system, which allows solidly performing players to extend their kill count gap.

Hard to say anything definitive on the game from that brief multiplayer sliver, but all indications are that Mr. Clancy has outdone himself again. Where does he find the time?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Price Is Right for Wii, DS, PC and Mac

Filed under: Nintendo DS, PC, Nintendo Wii

You know what? Not all the E3 news can be megatons. In fact, that seems to be the rule more than it is the exception anymore. But sometimes publishers try to slip a dud under the radar even after we just talked to them. Yes, we're looking at you Ubisoft. Well, we're looking at both you and the recently announced The Price is Right, coming to Wii, DS, PC and Mac in September 2008. You're lucky we're walleyed.

The release covertly slipped into our email box is also notable for containing absolutely no details that you couldn't guess on your own. We'll leave you to it.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Screenshots from Ubisoft's E3 2008 press conference

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, E3, Galleries

Ubisoft has officially announced I Am Alive, a new adventure that forces players to "think, react and take risks that will directly affect themselves and those around them" as they navigate a Chicago "left in ruins." The game is currently targeted for release on "current generation video game consoles" during Spring 2009. Not much else is known about the title, though earlier reports suggested that Assassin's Creed producer, Jade Raymond, would be taking the reins of this disaster game.

We'll let you know as soon as we learn more. Update: Teaser trailer after the break.

Gallery: I Am Alive

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Clancy's EndWar launching Oct. 14

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Strategy

While barking orders into a headset and commanding our tanks to ineffectually <strike>annihilate</strike> agitate the enemy army, we received some release date intel for upcoming tanks-go-here-helicopters-go-there skirmish, Tom Clancy's EndWar. According to Ubisoft, the console-oriented, real-time strategy game will march onto shelves in the US and Europe on October 14th. It'll launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 first, followed by PSP and DS versions at a later stage. A PC version is currenty "under consideration."

Check back later this week for our hands-on impressions of Tom Clancy's EndWar.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ubisoft's E3 2008 press conference liveblogging

Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, E3

We're sitting in the filled-to-capacity room 403 of the L.A Convention Center, ready to blog all the announcements from Ubisoft as they happen. Keep it here.

5:35 PM EST They're carting in extra chairs to handle the overflowing line of people still trying to get in. Silhouettes from a bunch of Ubi games filter in from the void. I saw a Rabbid, a soldier, a dancer, and a bunch more I couldn't place.

5:43 Please welcome the president of Ubisoft America, Laurent Detoc. He introduces Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party. "It is my favorite in the Rayman Raving Rabbids series," he says with his heavy French accent. A rabbid is sledding down a snowy hill on the back of what looks like a bull.

President Detoc is sitting on the balance board and looking generally childish leaning side to side. The Wii Remote and nunchuk get flicked violently from side to side used to do mid-air tricks.

5:45 In multiplayer mode, your friends will throw snoballs at you. The audience gets quiet as we see even more tricks. We get it... time to move on...

5:46 "The balance board, it's as if we have a new machine, given how friendly it is to use. WE really want to take advantage of that," says Detoc. Coming in November to the Wii and DS. A video trailer shows motorbiking (more sitting onthe balance board. Looks uncomfortable...) snowboarding through space (spaceboarding?) dancing(!) with Wii Remote and Nunchuk poses, and more bull-sledding. Looks pretty good graphically... for a Wii game.

5:49 Up next is Gearbox' Brothers in Arms, Hells Highway, coming in September. "They really go so far in authenticity and storytelling," Detoc gushes. In the trailer: "I see the blood and dirt of their faces. I've seen young boys turned into soldiers. I've seen men ripped apart by bullets. ... and so I ask myself, how much more can one man take?" Cheery!

5:50 Soldiers fly like ragdolls in super-slow-mo after being fragged. The character faces look a little unreal somehow, but not disturbingly so. "It makes me shiver every time," says Detoc.

5:52 2008 is the tenth anniversary of Tom Clancy video games, Man, we feel old. The series has sold 55 million copies so far.

5:53 Detoc pronounces EndWar like "Anwar." Mr. Sadat? What does he have to do with Tom Clancy?

5:54 "Until you try, you really don't know what it is to talk to your TV," Detoc says. The trailer shows people talking and... onscreen troops doing what they say, surprisingly enough. Will it be so simple in real life? We can only hope...

5:55 The commands seem relatively natural to speak: "Withdraw the men, send the fighters," "Launch command strike." We're glad we won't have to remember a bunch of cryptic commands.

5:56 Far Cry 2 is "First Person Shooter 2.0" Argh! The buzzwords! Draining... strength! Must... continue... blogging!

5:57 "This is Africa, and in this place of beauty, there's an ugliness that infect the land." The jackal has turned borther against brother. "How can such a man be stopped." Indian (as in Asia) music plays as a pre-rendered town goes up in flames. Beautiful explosions as a bazooka takes out a car. Fire, fire everywhere. "Coming Fall 2008." WIll your computer be ready to run it? You'd better upgrade! It looks nice.

6:00 Two designers from Far Cry 2 come on to talk about their design philosophy. There are 50 sq. km of Africa that you can explore however you want, "without fear of being overwhelmed by having too much choice." Sounds good to us!

6:01 A live demo shows how the game can be played more stealthily than balls-out actiony. Our character takes out a map and compass, held in front of the first-person view to navigate. Once he finds a sniper, that location gets marked on the map. X marks the sniper!

6:02 Every blade of grass and individual leaf looks like it's rustling independently as he passes. So pretty...

6:04 Not everything goes as planned as a jungle patrol spots Jon. He has to improvise, going to a defensive position behind some sheet metal and laying some dynamite to cover his escape. Nice smoke effects on the explosion.

6:05 Senior VP of sales and MArketing Tony Key comes out to talk about the "tween girl market." You mean Far Cry 2 isn't for them? On DS, the tween girl market grew 63%, faster than the general DS market. Six of the top ten DS brand in 2008 are tween girl targeted. "Imagine" tops the list, and Ubisoft is very proud. "Imagine" that. HA!

6:07 These gamers are new and non-traditional, but "definitely not casual," says Key. They play seriously and often. A video for a new Petz game features dogs and cats talking about heredity. "My ears and eyes are just like dad's!" etc. Oh, and there's monkeys. No, we're not kidding.

6:08 You can cross breeds and create unique petz families. Their research told them that "everyone" wants this. Really? Everyone? Does that include us. Monkeyz is coming to the Wii, along with Dogz Sports. Hoo, doggy.

6:09 Petz plush toys are coming to your local toy store, complete with codes that unlock virtual versions in the games. Webkins, anyone?

6:10 On screen, two tween girls are having a lot of fun pretending to be fashion designers, film stars and rock stars... with their DSes of course. Because today's youth need complicated electronics to unlock their imagination. The series is coming to the Wii with Fashion Party and Party Babies. "YOu can see it here at the show. I'm not kidding," says Key, somewhat apologetically.

6:12 Petz and Imagine are being joined by ... girls doing cheerleading, balance beam, soccer, basketball, track, bance, horseback riding ... and platitudes! "It's about being the best you can be. It's about being there for each other. And most of all, it's about Ener-G." That's Ener-G: The first brand based on sports aimed at girls. Adventure Riders, Dance Squad and Gym Rockets are coming to the DS this holiday. Girls want to play sports games, Key says, just not the same ones as their brothers.

6:15 Louie LaMarche, Producer, comes out with Phillippe Morin and Scott Mitchell to show off the Xbox 360 version of Shaun White Snowboarding. You can play around in a halfpipe as the game loads. LaMarche details a generic-sounding career mode where you can buy gear and such. Your friends can jump in to your mountain via Xbox Live and ... throw snowballs at each other. Heh.

6:18 The snow and mountain itself look pretty good, but the animation on the boarders is a little choppy right now. Up to 16 friends can join you on the mountain, online.

6:21 Shaun White comes out from back stage to "give a few pointers" to the struggling devs. "You guys are terrible" he tells the developers. He rambles on a bit about the realism of the cliffs and for stoked he and his friends are about the game. And just like that,

6:22 And just like that, Shaun is off again, possibly to shred some wicked pipe or something else suitably extreme.

6:23 "Critics are already saying that Prince of Persia will again contend for game of the year." A little early for that, don'tcha think? In an extremely elegant trailer (complete with Sigur Ros music) the Prince appears with a stark, black outline against the dusty desolation. Ethereal blue glowing... stuff flies everywhere as he and a female companion battle a minotaur. It's almost like ballet.

6:26 Ben Mattes, PoP prodcuer comes out to talk about how they want to keep the Prince of Persia feel on the next-gen systems. "An all new prince in an all new adventure" with his companion, Elka (sic?). She's there to "help the Prince look cool." The prince slides down dusty ramps and jumps and runs effortlessly along walls and cliffs.

6:29 The ethereal Elka helps the Prince do some double jumps and some extremely long wall jumps that would obviously not be possible otherwise. On to combat. "It's going to take everything you've got to win this fight, and every other fight in the game." The camera zooms and pans about without every losing sight of the protagonists and enemy, but that''s not too hard when there's only one enemy at a time...

6:31 We're getting a strong Ico vibe here from the black goo oozing out of the walls. The guy and girl in Ico was never able to jump like this, though.

6:32 Mattes is stresing a sense of flow, without the constant deaths that interrupted the other PoP games. Elka can save you when you make a mistake. You feel a little frustration when you die, but you go right back to the last stable platform and right back into the action, Mattes says. We're in favor of anything that meanswe never have to see a "Game Over! Continue?" screen ever again.

6:35 Another enemy dispatched, Elka can restore the greenery to the land. The dusty landscape is suddenly vibrant with grass and bushes. Thenewly-verdant vistas are pretty incredible.

6:36 Before we leave today, we've got one more announcement we want to make. It's a new brand ... the trailer shows a guy with torn pants running through an abandoned attic. Explosions rock in the distance. Three guys catch up with the man and he reluctantly gives them a bottle of water, which seems to be as precious as gold. He escapes, and outside the city is in ruins. But six days earlier, he was walking down the streets liek a normal shlub in a sweater-vest ... Hmm.

6:38 A massive, far off explosion sends a cloud of dust at least 50 feet high traveling down a busy avenue (shade of 9/11 here. Creepy! "I Am Alive" is the name. of the game. The house lights are up and we're out of here. Pictures of everything coming soon.

Far Cry 2 will not have a pre-release demo according to Clint Hocking, the game's creative director. Hocking explains to Eurogamer that given the open-world nature of the game, that even if they put walls around a certain section, there could still potentially be hours worth of game in that space -- defeating the whole point of a demo being a teaser.

Hocking went on to say that Far Cry 2's features are all locked and now "100 guys" are sitting around picking out the bugs. We should certainly get some hands-on time with the game next week at E3 and we'll report back what we find from our jaunt through the savanna.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The E3 2008 press conference schedule

You! Stop what you're doing! What are you playing over there? Cooking Mama? You think that sort of pansy-ass cooking game is going to cut it here? You're pathetic! You wouldn't last a second in Ubisoft's video game version of the Fox TV show Hell's Kitchen, coming this September for the Wii, DS, PC and Macintosh.

That's right, you'd break down in tears the second a "faithfully rendered 3D Chef Ramsay" yelled at you for putting too much oregano in the marinara sauce or some other piddling infraction. Why don't you go running to your precious Cooking Mama if you can't take the pressure of "the show's high-pressure kitchen and dining room challenges." Of course, if you do that you won't get access to "authentic Gordon Ramsay recipes, including many that are offered exclusively to game owners." That's right, you play with the big boys, you get the big rewards.

Hold it! Did you just twist the Wii Remote when you were supposed to shake it? You did, didn't you. That's it, I'm closing this kitchen. You're cooking career is OVER!

Gallery: Hell's Kitchen

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gamekyo: Jade Raymond working on surival game 'I Am Alive'

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action
We kind of assumed that after the sales success of Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft would tie Jade Raymond to the property and flog them both until one gave out. But apparently, the company thinks the Jade Raymond Media Bump would be better applied to a new IP: Gamekyo's reporting this morning that she's moved on to I Am Alive, a survival game that's set in a Chicago just rocked by an earthquake.

It seems though that she'll be making the leap in the final act of the game's development: Darkworks of Cold Fear fame has been working on the game, allegedly slated for spring 2009, for three years. Ubisoft has purchased Hybride Technologies, the Montreal-based visual effects studio behind several commercial, television and film projects; the studio is best known for its work on the films Spy Kids, 300 and Sin City. Ubi CEO Yves Guillemot says the acquisition is part of the company's plans to extend its brands to other forms of entertainment.

Hybride and Ubisoft will move forward by sharing technology and developing tools for video games and visual effects. The acquisition is initially expected to generate sales of 6 -7 million Euros. We're certainly curious to hear what the first game will be that uses Hybride's artists post-purchase in its production.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

End War pre-order lets you enlist in stress test

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Strategy

Despite vowing to "never go back to Vegas," Ubisoft is still more than willing to expand the gambler's paradise from afar via downloadable content. Terrorists vs. bandits (some one-armed, others well-armed) showdown, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, will be getting a free "Fan Pack" on Xbox Live, PSN and Ubisoft's website in July, sure to bring a smile to the two million or so people who purchased the game.

The download not only adds three new maps -- the re-lit "Murdertown" and "CQB Training," as well as "Calypso Casino" -- but new multiplayer ranks and several tweaks to weapons, gadgets and other aspects of the game. As promised, Ubisoft has unveiled a portable companion piece to this holiday's new-gen Prince of Persia, dubbing the pint-sized platformer "Prince of Persia: The Fallen King." Featuring an independent storyline and "unique stylus controls" (natch), The Fallen King sees the agile -- and now adorable -- acrobat foiling a mean ol' corruption that has encroached on every corner of the kingdom. Presumably, you'll also help some sort of king to get up.

Joining the prince in his wall-running adventures is "mysterious new ally" and playable character, Magus. He'll (it'll?) apparently use magical powers to help you overcome all manner of devious traps and puzzles. With the aid of Ubisoft's Casablanca studio, this little prince will join his big brother on shelves just in time for Holiday 2008.

Gallery: Prince of Persia: The Fallen King (DS)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ubisoft opening new studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Ubisoft announced today that it'll open a new studio in Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to GameDaily, this addition means the publisher now has studios on five continents (what, no Antarctica studio?). This follows the recently announced opening of a new campus in Casablanca, Morocco.

The publisher hopes to get the studio rolling in July with about 20 developers and grow it tenfold over the next four years into a 200-member team. Ubisoft notes the new location will begin by working with other studios on "family-oriented titles" for consoles and handhelds.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway deploys August 26

Filed under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters

Ubisoft announced today that Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is indeed going to make its previously projected August window and come out August 26 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC (via GameSpot). Gearbox's Nazi neck-stabbing World War II shooter tells the story of two soldiers trying to secure a piece of German-controlled road that may or may not be owned by a certain Prince of Darkness.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ubisoft needs help picking Prince of Persia achievements

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

Say what you will about him, but we think new Prince of Persia has already achieved quite a lot. Most notably, he's totally made us forget about old Prince of Persia, thanks in no small part to old Prince's ever-increasing resemblance to Criss Angel. Apparently though, Ubisoft still isn't satisfied, asking fans to come up with yet another hurdle for new Prince to overcome.

Right now, you can cast your vote and help select between three different 360 achievements on Ubisoft's website. They all make sense (master combos, run through a level, etc.) but after consulting the above picture, we'd like to suggest a more obvious choice: Find that girl's legs.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

EndWar beta footage leaked

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360

Update: Ubi lawyer-ninjas (totally different than ninja-lawyers) move quick. Video is down.

It's off some guy's television screen and the audio is horrible, but if you're itching to see what Tom Clancy's EndWar looks like, some naughty beta-tester uploaded a video of the game for all to see.

Now watch the video above and enjoy the fruits of somebody breaking their non-disclosure agreement (NDA). If the video suddenly disappears, the Ubi lawyer-ninjas probably got to it. Now we need to photoshop some lawyer-ninjas in case that actually happens. Watch ... while you still can.

[Via X3F]

Permalink | Email this | Comments
