Described as a side-scrolling action game where one space marine takes on hordes of enemies, Roadhouse Interactive's Warhammer 40K game is currently in development for unknown platforms, though we're assured more information will be released in the coming months.<br /><br />Warhammer 40K initially started as a tabletop war game created by UK outfit Games Workshop, set far in the future of an alternate universe inhabited by multiple factions: the militaristic Imperium of Man, the savage Orks, the elf-like Eldar and the Daemons, a malignant race of spiritual beings. Warhammer 40K is no stranger to video game tie-ins, our last taste being Relic Entertainment's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a>.</em><br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;"> <small>[Image is screenshot from <em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em>]</small></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/warhammer-40k-marching-to-smartphones-and-tablets/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer 40K marching to smartphones and tablets</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/warhammer-40k-marching-to-smartphones-and-tablets/">Warhammer 40K marching to smartphones and tablets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST. Relic developer Kyle Berndt has <a href="https://twitter.com/kyleberndt/status/294166753599164416">tweeted</a> that he is now a Sega employee, indicating that the company may have been purchased by Sega during the auction proceedings.<br /><br />No official announcements have been made regarding the fates of THQ's various studios and their respective intellectual property, but we're keeping our collective ears to the ground as more news continues to trickle down.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/23/rumor-sega-purchases-relic-during-thq-auction/">Report: Sega purchases Relic during THQ auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2013 15:09:00 EST. Joystiq got a chance to chat with THQ's Executive Vice President of Core Games, Danny Bilson, at a <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/saints-row-3"><em>Saints Row: The Third</em></a> event earlier this week. He spoke to us about <em>Space Marine</em>'s chances for a sequel, and what he plans for THQ this holiday and beyond.<br />
<br />
Bilson says <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> is "doing okay," and that "<em>40K</em> fans in particular" were pleased. "It's a really good game, it's doing pretty well. In this world, honestly, you have to do exceptionally well to make any money, because the games are so expensive." Bilson hopes the game keeps selling, and expects the impending release of co-op DLC and "more DLC after that" to help maintain its momentum.<br />
<br />
He balks at promising a sequel, however, saying that the <em>Space Marine</em> gameplay may bump up against THQ's planned <em>Warhammer 40K</em> MMO, <em>Dark Millennium</em>, in 2013. "We've already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play," he says, "and if you combine that it's very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I'm not sure there's room for <em>Space Marine</em>." But there is more coming for you, battle brothers: "We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there's more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/thqs-bilson-not-sure-theres-room-for-space-marine-sequel-alo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>THQ's Bilson 'not sure there's room' for Space Marine sequel alongside MMO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/thqs-bilson-not-sure-theres-room-for-space-marine-sequel-alo/">THQ's Bilson 'not sure there's room' for Space Marine sequel alongside MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 08:15:00 EST. THQ executive vice president Danny Bilson is known for his many things -- his gorgeous shock of graphite hair, his devil-may-care attitude, a movie star daughter. But in the game industry, he's best known for speaking loosely and passionately about his company's yet-to-be-revealed projects. A recent interview with <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-15-dawn-of-war-iii-first-details">Eurogamer</a> is no exception, with Bilson offering a small brigade of details on <em>Dawn of War 3</em>.<br />
<br />
Bilson says that the sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40000-dawn-of-war-ii">2009's <em>Dawn of War 2</em></a> is in development "right now," and is a mix of new elements with features from the first two titles. He also admitted that his company will be making a game announcement at GamesCom in the PC gamer-friendly country of Germany, which we're taking a wild guess is the official reveal of <em>DoW3</em>. We'll be on the ground in Cologne this August to bring you more details.<br />

	<small>Above: <em>Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II</em></small></div>
We haven't even made the acquaintance of the beefy battlers in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> yet and our friends in Australia are already getting a peek at the franchise's future. The Australian Classification Board just awarded a release called <em>Warhammer 40K: Kill Team</em> with an "M", presumably since it features a team that kills things.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Kill-team">the 40K wiki</a>, a kill-team is "a small group of Space Marines, usually no less than five Astartes but no more than a reinforced squad in size, that are tasked with carrying out a specific objective, such as the destruction of a particularly dangerous or strategically important individual, hence the name."<br />
<br />
The title's being developed by THQ Digital Studios UK, the same house behind <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-battlegrounds">Red Faction: Battlegrounds</a></em>, which leads us to believe we're talking about some sort of downloadable title. We were about to say it also leads us to believe it won't be very good, but who knows? Maybe the studio was working so hard on <em>Kill Team</em> that it forgot to make <em>Battlegrounds</em> good? Today <em>is</em> a holiday after all, the least we can do is to be generous.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/30/warhammer-40k-kill-team-rated-in-australia/">'Warhammer 40K: Kill Team' rated in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 May 2011 11:15:00 EST. The resulting title will be released as Steam download for $10 on April 20, and players who want to upgrade to the full <em>Dawn of War 2</em> will be able do so in-game for a reduced price.<br />

Look, THQ, we understand that you want folks to know that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</a></em> is still in development. Releasing new screens like you did today is a good idea, but they look just like the ones from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/preview-warhammer-40-000-space-marine/">our preview</a> in August. How about some shots of the Space Marine in, say, a snow level?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-still-exists-still-looks-the-sam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine still exists, still looks the same</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-still-exists-still-looks-the-sam/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine still exists, still looks the same</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 16:05:00 EST. The <em>Warhammer 40K</em> MMO,<em> Dark Millennium</em>, may still be another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/22/thq-puts-devils-third-in-2012-announces-ufc-trainer/">two years away</a>, but the trailer after the break gives us a small glimpse of the in-development title's graphics and user interface. Of course, being two years away, almost all of that can (and likely will) change.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-trailer-gives-taste-of-the/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer 40K Dark Millennium Online trailer gives taste of the far future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-trailer-gives-taste-of-the/">Warhammer 40K Dark Millennium Online trailer gives taste of the far future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:30:00 EST. <div align="left">THQ and Relic have <a href="http://community.dawnofwar2.com/blog-post/last-stand-update-18-live">released</a> "The Last Stand," a free update for the <em>Warhammer 40k </em>RTS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war-2"><em>Dawn of War II</em></a>. As we reported <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/dawn-of-war-iis-the-last-stand-mode-detailed/">during PAX 2009</a>, the DLC adds a Horde/<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/firefight">Firefight</a> style survival mode to the game. In addition, the pack contains two new maps and what THQ describes as "numerous <a href="http://community.dawnofwar2.com/forums/topic/34142">balance updates and bug fixes</a>."</div>

<br />
The publisher has also mentioned that <em>Dawn of War II </em>is receiving what we can only imagine is a limited time price cut to $20 on <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/15620/">Steam</a>, effective immediately. It should last 'til at least <em>dawn</em>.<br />

It seems the increasingly popular <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/next-gears-of-war-2-update-adding-experience-to-horde-mode/">"Horde" mode</a> first presented in <em>Gears of War 2</em> (before spreading to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/see-the-call-of-duty-world-at-war-nazi-zombie-mode/">other popular</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/firefight">FPS titles</a> in some form) isn't just proliferating through the shooter genre -- <a href="http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/warhammer-40000-dawn-of-war-ii/1019421p1.html">GameSpy recently revealed details</a> for "The Last Stand," a similar gametype which will soon be introduced into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war-2"><em>Dawn of War II</em></a>. <br />
<br />
The new mode, which will come as a free download for those who own the full game, lets three players select either the Space Marine, Ork or Eldar hero classes, then face off cooperatively against wave after wave of computer-controlled adversaries. Between waves, players will be able to level up their heroes and manage their equipment. The series' strategic roots aren't being thrown out the window -- players will need to work together to stay alive and capture score-multiplying control points.<br />
<br />
We'll undoubtedly learn more about this intriguing expansion to the <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/warhammer40000dawnofwar2">well-received</a> strategy title during Relic's panel at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX 2009</a>.<br />

Along with working on two major current-gen games in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/darksiders"><em>Darksiders: Wrath of War</em></a> and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-40k-online/"><em>Warhammer: 40K </em>MMO</a>, THQ-owned Vigil Games is packing up its stuff and moving to a brand new 33,000-square foot studio in another part of Austin, TX. Unsurprisingly, in confirming the move to <a href="http://kotaku.com/5299873/update-thq-opens-giant-austin-office">Kotaku</a>, THQ reiterates its desire to attract new employees as development ramps up on the aforementioned titles.<br /><br />Though the move was likely decided well before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ufc-2009-undisputed"><em>UFC 2009 Undisputed</em></a> hit store shelves -- and quickly went flying right off those same shelves -- the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/11/may-npd-ufc-on-top-while-ds-ps2-take-a-beating/">1.01 million unit sales</a> of the game couldn't hurt the moving situation. Plusher couches at the new offices, perhaps? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> has officially confirmed work on <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em>, yet another game set against the backdrop of Games Workshop's gritty tabletop universe. Relic has again been handed developer duties on the title, though unlike <em>Dawn of War,</em> the console-focused <em>Space Marine</em> will be an action RPG that lets players control individual units through a "narrative-driven story campaign and in wide-scale online battles." <br /><br />In development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it's unclear what ties, if any, the project has to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/">leaked <em>Space Marine</em> footage</a> that made the rounds late last year. However, judging from this <a href="http://au.xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14352257/warhammer-40000-space-marine/videos/spacemarine_trl_battle_52709.html">IGN-hosted trailer</a>, the game certainly looks to keep more with <em>40K</em>'s combat-heavy fiction when it eventually decides to chainsword retail shelves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-cleansing-consoles-for-the-empero/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine cleansing consoles for the emperor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 09:28:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-battle-march"><em>Warhammer: Battle March</em></a> just released on Xbox 360, it's time for <a href="http://gamersushi.com/2008/09/04/rumor-warhammer-40k-space-marine-video/">a new <em>Warhammer</em> rumor</a> to start circulating. The rumor in question is that an unnamed developer is currently hard at work on a <em>Warhammer 40K</em> third-person shooter by the name of <em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em>. It's not really a rumor so much at this point, as the video embedded after the break pretty much confirms it. The only question is who is developing the game. Joystiq has contacted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/THQ/">THQ</a>, the license holder of the <em>Warhammer 40K</em> name. We'll be sure to post any revelations they receive.<br /><br />The <em>Warhammer 40K</em> universe is really perfect for this kind of game, and the video footage shows real promise. We're digging the "up close and personal" nature of the game, as well as the <em>Gears of War</em>-esque finishing moves. Check out the (very lengthy) video after the break. Oh, and be sure to take note of the Xbox 360 logo at the beginning.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-shooter-in-the-works/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rumor: Warhammer 40K shooter in the works</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-shooter-in-the-works/">Rumor: Warhammer 40K shooter in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 17:30:00 EST. Apparently, there's some "leaked" footage of a third-person <em>Warhammer 40K</em> shooter floating around the internets. The game, with the awfully generic subtitle of "<em>Space Marine</em>," appears to be a mix of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War</em></a> and <em>God of War</em>. The voice-over that accompanies the video, which <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=232456">Eurogamer</a> guesses belongs a developer, explains that the game is focused on brutal, close-quarters combat.<br /><br />We've contacted <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a>, which holds the video game license to the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-40k"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a> universe, to see if it can shed some of the Emperor's light on this topic. While we're not exactly sure about the video's authenticity, it certainly has had some nice work put into it. Find it after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rumor: Warhammer 40K third-person shooter in development</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/">Rumor: Warhammer 40K third-person shooter in development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 14:50:00 EST. It's time to load your storm bolter and wrap up your last prayer to the Emperor, cuz we're huntin' Tyranids! IGN has confirmed that everyone's favorite galactic bugs will be clawing their way onto Relic's forthcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war-ii"><span style="font-style: italic;">Dawn of War</span> sequel</a>, not only as an opponent but as a playable race as well. <br />
<br />
The <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">blood</span> news was spilled during the Leipzig Games Convention by <span style="font-style: italic;">Dawn of War II</span> senior designer Philippe Boulle, who noted that the space insects behave as "a single organism, not an army of individuals," and that the swarm is composed of disposable "meat shields" and more specialized alien troops serving the Tyranid Hive Mind. For more, check out the pre-rendered pure awesome below while we wait for the bugs to digest their fill of Space Marine, Ork and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/dawn-of-war-ii-e3-teaser-introduces-the-eldar/">Eldar</a> in early 2009.<br />

While it's difficult to make out the guttural baritone voice of the above trailer's narrator, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36030.html?type=mov">we're pretty sure that this is an E3 teaser</a> for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Warhammer%2040%2C000%3A%20Dawn%20of%20War%20II">Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II</a></em>. Those already invested in the series will be glad to know that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldar_(Warhammer_40,000)">the svelte Eldar will be making an appearance</a> in the the RTS franchise's latest installment, and that they will apparently wield neat glowing swords. At least, we think they're swords. For all we know, the Eldar might just be on their way to a futuristic fantasy-themed rave -- after all, they are well-known among their contemporaries for being the galaxy's official <em>party race</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/dawn-of-war-ii-e3-teaser-introduces-the-eldar/">Dawn of War II E3 teaser introduces the Eldar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. With the series back in the hands of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/family-album-thq/">Relic studios</a>, hopefully the game will help <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/analyst-thq-has-internal-problems/">bottom line</a> when it releases early next year.<br />

For those who missed out on the original <em>Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War</em> series (which is three games -- four, if you count <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/sisters-of-battle-dark-eldar-lead-charge-in-dawn-of-war-soulst/"><em>Soulstorm</em></a>), it still holds up well and can be found in a boxed <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Warhammer-Dawn-Of-War-Platinum/dp/B000RCOVXI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1212861609&amp;sr=8-1">Platinum Set</a>, and on <a href="http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=sub&amp;SubId=447&amp;cc=US">Steam</a>, for around $30. For the sake of <em>DoW II</em>'s sales, we hope <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/starcraft-II"><em>Starcraft II</em></a> isn't released anywhere close to the same time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/07/glimpse-some-dawn-of-war-ii-gameplay-footage/">Glimpse some Dawn of War II gameplay footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. While what we know about the game is barely knee-high to a gretchin, PC Gamer magazine recently had the opportunity to speak with a pair of folks behind Vigil Games' upcoming <em>Warhammer 40,000</em> MMO, specifically general manager David Adams and studio creative director Joe Madureira. Both shed a few details on what we can expect while we wait patiently to kill rats aboard space hulks for the emperor. <br /><br />Says Adams, the game will be "much more intense" and combat-focused than the traditional fantasy MMOs upon which we've cut our teeth, giving us all the more reason to want to trade up our broadsword for a storm bolter. However, the dev notes that the MMO "will be an RPG," adding that "Relic has the RTS angle covered with the awesome <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawnofwar"><em>Dawn of War</em></a> series - we are making an RPG." Other interesting tidbits from the article include note that the game will include all of the tabletop game's "important" races, customizable characters, a variety of solo, party-based, and PvP missions, and the possibility of in-game vehicles as well. We can't wait to see how the tabletop war game makes the leap to MMO, but as it stands, in the grim darkness of the far future ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/thq-wow-has-peaked-warhammer-40k-mmo-years-away/">there is only waiting</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.massively.com/2008/05/12/warhammer-40k-mmo-info-update/">Massively</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/vigil-games-details-warhammer-40k-mmo/">Vigil Games details Warhammer 40K MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 09:00:00 EST. THQ executive Jack Sorenson tells <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=130974">Eurogamer</a> he believes <em>World of Warcraft</em> has "peaked." He's not daft though, recognizing that there may always be millions of people playing it and that <em>WoW</em> is a great business. On that note, Sorenson is playing the good cheerleader for THQ's upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/thq-announces-warhammer-40k-mmo/"><em>Warhammer 40,000</em></a> MMO and says it's still years away. <br /><br />THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors in 2006 that the company wasn't going to take on <em>Warcraft</em> until it was in a "downward slope." Sorenson backs that up by echoing the same thoughts of many MMO producers over the last couple of years that titles need to launch "great" now. It appears THQ is in no rush to get the <em>Warhammer 40K</em> MMO out the door without more than a prayer to the Emperor that it'll survive.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/thq-wow-has-peaked-warhammer-40k-mmo-years-away/">THQ: WoW has peaked, Warhammer 40k MMO years away</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST. The real-time strategy sequel was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/thq-makes-dawn-of-war-ii-official-coming-spring-2009/">officially confirmed</a> just a couple days ago and will apparently feature a fully co-operative multiplayer campaign. Don't go getting too excited just yet -- <em>DoW II</em> won't be out until Spring '09. In the meantime, for those who need a <em>40K</em> RTS fix stat, there's always <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/sisters-of-battle-dark-eldar-lead-charge-in-dawn-of-war-soulst/"><em>Soulstorm</em></a>, which will grant entry into the sequel's multiplayer beta at some point in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/05/the-sun-rises-on-a-dawn-of-war-ii-trailer/">The sun rises on a Dawn of War II trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 05 Apr 2008 04:00:00 EST. After numerous expansions to its Relic-founded <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawnofwar/"><em>Dawn of War</em> </a>license, THQ has confirmed that a medic has braved the field of battle and returned with the franchise's treasured gene seed, officially announcing <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II</em> for the PC. While the game is not expected to drop until Spring 2009, THQ notes that players who pick up the current game's latest expansion, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/sisters-of-battle-dark-eldar-lead-charge-in-dawn-of-war-soulst/"><em>Soulstorm</em></a>, will score themselves an invite to the sequel's upcoming multiplayer beta.<br />
<br />
According to THQ, <em>Dawn of War II</em> will be built upon the Relic's proprietary Essence Engine 2.0, and will feature a fully co-operative multiplayer campaign. As for what races this latest chapter in the RTS series will offer up, we're left guessing, though the publisher has confirmed that the Space Marines and the Orkish green tides will be included. More information is promised in the near future, and as we get word from the Emperor, we'll let you know.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/thq-makes-dawn-of-war-ii-official-coming-spring-2009/">THQ makes Dawn of War II official, coming Spring 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 09:15:00 EST. THQ's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/warhammer-40k-squad-command-might-be-awesome/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Squad Command</em></a> may have earned a Metascore of just <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/warhammer40000squadcommand?q=squad%20command">57</a>, but today it's also earned a $17.99 on the crucial "How much does this game cost on Amazon" scale. That's, well, <em>less</em> than the $29.99 you would normally have to spend to try the turn-based strategy title. It's just 44 cents per <em>K</em> of <em>Warhammer! </em><br /><br />It's almost worth $17.99 just to have a constant reminder of how great the custom <em>Warhammer 40K</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/pretty-much-the-most-badass-ds-lite-mod-ever/">DS Lite</a> was. But of course <em>just printing a picture of it</em> would be significantly cheaper. Alternately, it could be worth picking up if you want to play a strategy game or something.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/warhammer-18-sale-command/">Warhammer $18: Sale Command</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 17:00:00 EST. This week, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/17/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-december-17th/">new releases</a> pretty much deal with squad-based combat or vehicles exclusively. So, if you aren't down with that, you're likely to not be picking up a new game. But, have no fear, as the holidays come next week and you're likely to receive some kind of gaming gift, if you were a good boy or girl. There's that to look forward to as you spend the weekend without a new game.<br /><br />So, what are you playing?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/wrup-squad-based-vehicles-edition/">WRUP: Squad-based vehicles edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Dec 2007 17:00:00 EST. If comments are any indication, many remain unsure of the direction <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/relic/">Relic</a> intends to take the latest expansion for its tabletop-inspired RTS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dawnofwar/"><em>Dawn of War</em></a>, <em>Soulstorm</em>. While some may have continued to hold out hope for a bug hunt against galactic menace and fan-favorite Tyranids, gameplay designer Shawn Frison has revealed <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=176182">via a dev diary</a> that the game will in fact pit the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/thq-continues-dawn-of-war-expansion-with-soulstorm/">previously revealed</a> Dark Eldar against the estrogen-charged Orders Militant of the Adepta Sororitas, otherwise known as the Sisters of Battle.<br />
<br />
The stand alone expansion's factions will join others from the series, from the genetically enhanced Space Marines to the Orkish green tides, and will offer additional units and vehicles with which to wage war in the 'grim darkness' of the 41st millennium. <br />
<br />
Among these new units will be the Sisters' Canoness, who is described by Frison as "a battle-hardened veteran" who is apparently able to call down the wrath of God at a whim to smite her foes, <em>not </em>unlike my mother-in-law. Not to be outdone, the Dark Eldar also come to play with their "lords of malice" called Archons who, along with a retinue of Incubi bodyguards, look to give the opposition what for by siphoning their souls and being generally unpleasant. So, given these two choices, which race will win your favor next spring when <em>Soulstorm </em>arrives at retail?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/sisters-of-battle-dark-eldar-lead-charge-in-dawn-of-war-soulst/">Sisters of Battle, Dark Eldar lead charge in Dawn of War: Soulstorm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Nov 2007 10:00:00 EST. To be perfectly honest, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/warhammer/">Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command</a> </em>has flown under the radar around here as evidenced by its exclusion from this week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/11/worldwide-psp-releases-for-the-week-of-november-11/">Worldwide PSP Releases</a> feature despite its Nov. 12 release date. In our defense, though, publisher THQ didn't exactly break the bank in publicizing the game or ensure very many assets made it into the gaming media's hands.<br /><br />However, Games Workshop did manage to sneak out a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/warhammer-40-000-squad-command-downloadable-demo/">short demo</a> that gave a very small taste of what gamers can expect from the game. In spite of its length deficiency, the demo definitely showed the game had promise. <br /><br />To show our remorse, we present you with the game's launch trailer, which THQ kindly sent out two days after the game's actual release.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/warhammer-40-000-squad-command-launches-does-anyone-care/">Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command launches, does anyone care?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. THQ has announced the availability of <a href="http://www.thq-games.com/uk/game/demos/2297/1?keyw=squad&amp;per_page=">a free PSP demo</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/warhammer-40k-squad-command-bound-for-ds-psp/"><em>Squad Command</em></a>, the publisher's upcoming portable take on Games Workshops' lucrative <em>Warhammer 40K</em> tabletop license. As demos go, the 6MB download offers a taste of the larger game by placing players in control of a squad of five Space Marines and a mechanical dreadnaught taken from the game's larger Ultramarines chapter. <br />
<br />
The full game will be available at retail in November, and will allow you to play as either the Imperial Space Marines or the their more evil (read: <em>more spiky</em>) cousins across a 15-mission single player campaign or on nine different multiplayer maps. Of course, if cleansing the universe of chaos for the Emperor while on the go is not your cup of tea, take solace in the knowledge that THQ will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/thq-continues-dawn-of-war-expansion-with-soulstorm/">revisit its <em>Dawn of War</em> PC franchise</a> next spring, while the company is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/thq-announces-warhammer-40k-mmo/">also working</a> with Texas-based Vigil Games on a 40K-themed MMO as well. In the <em>grim darkness of the far future</em>, there is only license whoring.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/warhammer-40k-squad-command-gets-psp-demo/">Warhammer 40K: Squad Command gets PSP demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 14:30:00 EST. THQ has once again returned to Games Workshop's well for a drink, announcing yet another expansion for the company's popular <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War</em> real-time strategy franchise. The series, which launched in 2004 for the PC and already includes expansions <em>Winter Assault</em> and <em>Dark Crusade</em>, is based on the popular tabletop miniatures war game, though thankfully the electronic version is far less expensive. <br />
<br />
In development at Relic,<em> Soulstorm </em>is expected to launch in spring 2008. In addition, like <em>Dark Crusade</em>, <em>Soulstorm </em>will be a stand alone expansion, allowing players to jump right into the <em>grim darkness of the far future</em> without having to pick up the other games in the series to do so. <br />
<br />
Previous expansions added new armies like the Imperial Guard, Tau, and Necron, and <em>Soulstorm </em>looks to continue this tradition by introducing two new factions, bringing the series' total to nine playable races. While THQ remains tight lipped on one of these new races, the other will be the Dark Eldar. The game will also add new units across the seven other races, including air units, a first for the series. Finally, the scale of the game is swelling as well, with THQ noting that players will do battle across an entire star system. <em>For the Emperor!</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/thq-continues-dawn-of-war-expansion-with-soulstorm/">THQ continues Dawn Of War expansion with Soulstorm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 17:10:00 EST. Due in Q4, the expansion features two new playable races -- the undead Necron and the technological Tau -- which brings the number of playable factions to seven. Developer Relic Entertainment (<em>Homeworld</em>, <em>Impossible Creatures</em>) is also including a new single player campaign. Fans of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/22/metareview-rise-of-legends/"><em>Rise of Legends</em></a> might want to check this out.<br />

<p>According to this <a target="_blank" href="http://www.relic.com/corp/news/2004/080704.php">press release</a>, THQ announced that Dawn of War went gold close to two weeks ago. However, over at <a target="_blank" href="http://pc.ign.com/objects/013/013400.html">IGN</a> it seems that this real-time strategy was actually cancelled. What's going on here? Well, according to several major retailers Dawn of War is hitting stores today. So what gives IGN? (Not that we expect an explanation...) In terms of DoW, it's actually an extension of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. So if you're looking for that dark, futuristic edge combined with quality RTS, then look no further.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2004/09/20/dawn-of-war-today/">Dawn of War today?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2004 09:32:00 EST. His hands-on look at the beta has yielded a good post that should get all you fans excited.</p>
<p>Heads up for RTS fans, this game has great potential for anyone interested in a good RTS. The graphics are reminiscant of Warcraft 3 but also has style similar to Starcraft. Using Relic's new graphics engine that was also used in Homeworld 2, this game looks great. Also the strategy implemented in Dawn of War is astonishing. Almost every unit can be upgraded to be used for somthing else (i.e. Space Marine Dreadnaughts can be upgraded for either anti-infantry or anti-tank purposes). Also, squad based infantry makes for interesting strategies. For example, if artillery rains down upon a squad of Marines not much damage will be inflicted on them - but it might as well have. It throws the Space Marines into the air and separates them, greatly diminishing the squad's effectiveness and rendering them almost entirely useless. At least, until the squad gets a chance to regroup, which can be deadly in a large scale battle.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2004/08/30/warhammer-40-000-dawn-of-war-exclusive-inside-look-at-the/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Exclusive inside look at the beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2004/08/30/warhammer-40-000-dawn-of-war-exclusive-inside-look-at-the/">Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Exclusive inside look at the beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2004 20:49:00 EST.
