It happens to the best of us; even video game bloggers are not infallible. And after a rage-inducing, hair-pulling bad day, you can go home, curl up in a ball and listen to <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/The+Wallflowers/Bringing+Down+the+Horse/One+Headlight">The Wallflowers</a> in surrender, or vent some of that anger. By punching people.<br /><br />But hold up there, tiger. You can't punch real people. That's, like, <em>illegal</em>. Enter the Wii: the best simulation for punching people outside of the real thing. Unfortunately, <em>Wii Sports Boxing</em> does not offer the realistic experience of mashing in someone's face Stallone style. Worse, no other boxing game since the Wii's release has really delivered a solid boxing experience. That could change in the near future with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/facebreaker-ko-party/">Facebreaker K.O. Party</a>, forcing me to eat my words like a knuckle sandwich from Rocky Marciano. But if its Xbox/PS3 counterpart is <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sort=relevance&amp;termType=all&amp;ts=facebreaker&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">any indication</a>, there's not much chance of that. The same goes for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/metareview-don-king-presents-prizefighter-xbox-360/">Don King Prizefighter</a>. This shaky reliability just won't do. We need <em>Punch-Out!!</em><br />

Following its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/wii-hits-south-korea-on-april-26/">recent release to Korea</a>, Nintendo has made an official announcement that the console will now also release in Taiwan. On July 12th, gamers will be able to nab a Wii of their very own. And, even better than the Japanese, their console will come bundled with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/wii-warm-up-would-you-buy-wii-sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. <br /><br />Do you think sales will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/wiis-kryptonite-is-korea-apparently/">as poor as Korea</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/wii-releases-in-taiwan-next-month/">Wii releases in Taiwan next month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. Now, sports trainers are looking to <em>Wii Fit</em> to help rehabilitate injured athletes.<br /><br /> "We are looking to incorporate <em>Wii Fit</em> into the athletic training room as far as rehabilitation, for example, on post-operative knees and ankles," said Sue Stanley-Green, professor of athletic training at Florida Southern College. She noted that the success of the console in other rehab scenarios fueled their interest in <em>Wii Fit</em>, stating that "Fitness-oriented video games are also being used more and more in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/final-game-of-erickson-sports-wii-bowling-championship/">nursing homes</a> for rehabilitation," also adding "Fitness video games have some really good potential to improve fitness in everyone."<br /><br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/wii-fit-already-carving-up-bods-finding-use-in-rehabilitation/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/wii-fit-the-new-go-to-for-rehab-clinics/">Wii Fit the new go-to for rehab clinics?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST. The Japanese website for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-super-sluggers"><em>Mario Super Sluggers</em></a> has gone live and it's chock full of those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/12/wii-experience-fun-console-boring-living-room/">experience videos</a> we saw awhile back. Also at the site, you'll find a trailer for the game, but most of you probably <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/slug-it-out-with-the-new-trailer/">saw that</a> yesterday.<br /><br />But, if there's one thing these experience videos show us, it's a real-time representation of how the game will be played when it finally gets in our hands. And, that couldn't be soon enough. We can only take so many <em>extremely short</em> games of baseball in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/wii-sports-cleans-up-at-baftas/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/experience-mario-super-sluggers-site/">Experience Mario Super Sluggers' site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. Oh, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japan">Japan</a>, how we love you. And you love us back simply by <em>existing</em>. Mecca for gamers, the country has more video games than Halle Berry has bad post-Oscar career choices. Every gaming nerd on the planet would love to live there.<br /><br />So, what Wii games do the Japanese public enjoy most? Well, it's not that surprising this list of the six top-selling Wii titles in Japan. But, we know how much you all love this kind of data, so without further delay, let's get to the numbers!<br /><br />The Wii's six top-selling games in Japan are:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/levine-wii-bowling-is-the-ultimate-gateway-drug/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> - 2,979,275 units sold total</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/point-counterpoint-the-worth-of-wii-play/"><em>Wii Play</em></a> - 2,368,967 units sold total</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> - 2,038,730 units sold total</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/super-chart-bros-brawl/"><em>Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> - 1,620,119 units sold total</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-and-friends-a-great-match/727939/"><em>Mario Party 8</em></a> - 1,254,542 units sold total</li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/nintendo-joins-the-rest-of-the-world-in-not-welcoming-hitler/">Mario Kart Wii</a> </em>- 1,227,169 units sold total</li>
</ul>
All first-party titles. Big shocker there!<br /><br />

EA has decided that they want <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/ea-sports-wii-cup-overfloweth/">a fairly decent slice</a> of that pie, and are doing so with special Wii versions of their sports games. EA expects that sales of its sports games will account for $1.3 billion in its fiscal year (which just ended in March), coming to a third of their total revenue. <br /><br />The model for them (like others) has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=wii+sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. Peter Moore, head of EA Sports, commented that EA has "no intention whatsoever of dumbing down the experience that we all love and that drives this multibillion dollar business ... we need to make sports games more approachable." He then comments how <em>Wii Sports</em> became so popular "and we saw that and decided we needed to redefine what our sports games were about." These new accessible Wii versions of EA's popular sports games will have an "All-Play" label attached. Moore explains it as "like how swimming pools have a deep end and a shallow end. EA Sports has really only built a swimming pool with a deep end. It's intimidating for a lot of people to jump right in the deep end. With All-Play, we're building a shallow end."<br /><br />Maybe with all this Wii support, Reggie will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/13/peter-moore-wonders-why-reggie-never-sent-him-a-wii/">finally send Peter one</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ea-sets-focus-on-wii-exclusive-versions-of-sports-games/">EA sets focus on Wii-exclusive versions of sports games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. When we received our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/a-rainbow-of-nunchuks/">Nyko Kama wireless nunchuk</a>, we thought about what games would be the most appropriate to use the nunchuk with. As such, pretty much all of our games qualified as good candidates, so we went with <em>Super Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes</em> and <em>Wii Sports</em>. How did the Kama stack up against Nintendo's nunchuk? It seems like you can find a Wii <em>everywhere</em> (besides <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/pachter-wii-fit-to-raise-wii-demand-keep-shortages-going/">a retail shelf</a>) nowadays. Whether you're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/29/cruise-ships-offer-wii-to-passengers/">on a cruise</a>, at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/come-for-the-soft-beds-stay-for-the-wii-sports/">a hotel</a> or even at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/23/wii-is-official-console-of-six-flags/">the amusement park</a>, you just can't escape the little system that could.<br /><br />And now, the business travelers and other folks that find themselves staying at a Westin Hotel can also enjoy Wii (complete with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/30/wii-fit-distributors-getting-weekly-exercise/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>) inside the confines of the Westin's workout room. So whether you're down for some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/real-bowler-schooled-by-wii-bowler/"><em>Wii Sports: Bowling</em></a> or simply want to have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-fit/731116/full">a nice, peaceful stretch with <em>Wii Fit</em></a>, you won't have to be away from your beloved console when on the road. <br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/westin-hotels-add-wii-wii-fit-to-their-exercise-rooms/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/get-fit-with-wii-at-westin-hotels/">Get fit with Wii at Westin Hotels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 May 2008 20:00:00 EST. <br />What's a good way to get folks into your hotel? We have no clue, what with being a <em>game blog and all</em>, but it looks like some hotels might have found a good way to get folks in their doors: gaming<em>.</em> We imagine if you have something the people like and want, they'll flock to you. That must be the thinking behind some hotels in the U.S. incorporating some of the most popular games into their repertoire of activities available to patrons. It really looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/deca-sports-gets-first-official-u-s-trailer/">a fun compilation of sports</a>. But, to sway any doubt about the game's excellence that we may have had lingering around in our mind, Mike Samachisa, the head of Hudson Entertainment's console division, answered some of our questions regarding the game.<br /><br />Why wasn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/nintendo-wi-fi">Wi-Fi</a> support added? As with most Japanese ads, there is quite the amount of shouting. But, that's okay, because we get to check out some gameplay. We can't be the only one impressed with the amount of different sports in this game? <br /><br />What we're pondering really, though, is whether or not this game will have a sport that can topple <em>Wii Sports: Bowling</em> as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/levine-wii-bowling-is-the-ultimate-gateway-drug/">the ultimate go-to game</a> for anyone that enjoys Wii or has had yet to experience it? Perhaps others enjoy the <em>Wii Sports: Tennis </em>more, but our experience has been that <em>everyone</em> loves <em>Bowling</em>, while only some have liked the <em>Tennis</em>.<br /><br />Hit up the break for the other TV spot.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/deca-sporta-tv-spota/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deca Sporta TV spota</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/deca-sporta-tv-spota/">Deca Sporta TV spota</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 14:15:00 EST. But, Levine did take some time to touch on what he thinks about the casual market and how Nintendo is introducing new gamers into the fold.<br /><br />You see, Levine is embracing the changes that Nintendo and their Wii console are looking to bring to the industry. "Wii Bowling is like the ultimate gateway drug and God bless them for figuring that out because there is no barrier of entry," he explains. "Hey, can you go like that?" [swings arm] That's what you do in bowling, that's what you do in <em>Wii Sports</em>." <br /><br />Levine sees those that would otherwise ignore gaming as getting into it, commenting "I think there's a much better chance of people who wouldn't normally be interested in games going in and thinking "I'm interested in the history of Rome. I'll buy that strategy game," whereas before they would have been overwhelmed by the very concept of it." And, Levine, you're not the only one. We're excited about the future of gaming and how the Wii will help shape it, too!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=36561">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/levine-wii-bowling-is-the-ultimate-gateway-drug/">Levine: Wii Bowling is the 'ultimate gateway drug'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 12:45:00 EST. Some fresh, albeit kind of small, screens for Hudson's upcoming take on the whole <em>Wii Sports</em> thing, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deca-sports"><em>Deca Sports</em></a>, have hit the net. And, we're hoping this game manages to be as fun as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/have-a-pint-and-a-go-at-wii-sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>, because the overall package looks to have nothing but "win" written all over it. There's a ton of sports included in the game, some mainstream and some not so much (we can't wait to try the curling), so if you find yourself interested, hit up the gallery below for the new screens.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/break-a-sweat-looking-over-these-deca-sports-screens/">Break a sweat looking over these Deca Sports screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 18:00:00 EST. There was no saucy saunter down the red carpet, but Nintendo's casual darling <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wiisports">Wii Sports</a> </em>did manage to surprise gamers with a <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=A5YuXOXCnMo">guest-spot</a> at the 2008 Academy Awards. In one of the night's many gags, host <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jonstewart">Jon Stewart</a> gets caught off guard when the show returns from commercial break, to find him using one of the event's gigantic projection screens to play a quick round of <em>Wii Tennis</em>.<br /><br />The entire segment lasts only thirty seconds, but it's chuckle-worthy, to be sure. Check out the video after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/wii-tennis-makes-surprise-appearance-at-the-oscars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Tennis makes surprise appearance at the Oscars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/wii-tennis-makes-surprise-appearance-at-the-oscars/">Wii Tennis makes surprise appearance at the Oscars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 07:30:00 EST. This time, however, it's in relation to the UK Department of Health's endorsement of an in-school "active" games scheme designed by the Droitwich and Worcester City School Sport Partnership. Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, was unconvinced by the program's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/27/uk-government-targets-gaming-industry-for-anti-obesity-program/">weight-loss merits</a>, saying, "Pupils would be far better doing serious competitive sports and games than this sort of thing." <br /><a href="http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/science_technology/computer+games+scheme+is+gimmick/1419947"><br />Channel 4</a> reports that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/22/todays-healthiest-video-wii-sports-experiment-on-nbc/">this sort of thing</a> has already been implemented in five schools in Worcestershire as "virtual PE," with the hopes that active gaming would lure children to participate in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/its-fun-to-wii-at-the-ymca/">other physical exercise</a>. Seaton, however, believes it "looks like another gimmick," one that's "pandering to the views of the physically idle." The Department of Health argued that the Wii makes for a good "first step" towards other forms of exercise, though failed to mention the benefits of the many, many steps required to excel in the physical strenuous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/02/konami-announces-dance-dance-revolution-hottest-party-for-wii/"><em>Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party</em></a>. <br /><br />Mind you, the embarrassing view of the physical idol in school would likely result in even more nasty name calling.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=32478">GamesIndustry.biz</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/campaigner-calls-wii-exercise-in-schools-another-gimmick/">Campaigner calls Wii exercise in schools 'another gimmick'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. We've all worked up a sweat while playing the Wii, whether it be during sessions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/warioware-costume-makes-cosplay-not-fun-anymore/"><em>WarioWare: Smooth Moves</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/wii-sports-cleans-up-at-baftas/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> (or any of the other numerous titles that ask you to get physical). We figured we were just unhealthy and that any normal person with any kind of regular physical activity in their life would just laugh as our doughy physique cried "mercy" after just minutes of throwing down in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/friday-video-thats-what-its-all-about/"><em>Wii Sports: Boxing</em></a>.<br /><br />Canadian students from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia decided that they wanted to see how a workout with the Wii compares to more conventional exercises. These students could care less about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/science-community-tackles-wii-weight-loss-claims/">scientific research</a> apparently (or don't read Wii Fanboy, either of which being a <em>crime against humanity</em>), as took matters into their own hands and came up with an exercise scheme. Their conclusion, much like that of the scientists mentioned previously, was that although the Wii certainly did increase cardiovascular activity, it in no way was intense enough for them.<br /><br />Hopefully, whenever <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/06/wii-fit-gameplay-makes-us-sweat-just-watching-it/">Wii Fit</a> </em>releases, the Wii will be a more viable solution for serious health nuts. Until that day, we'll just keep having fun with our low impact sessions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/wii-sports-still-fun-even-with-wiimote-jackets/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, gusto! In little over 60 weeks, the Wii console has managed to sell over 5 million units in its home territory of Japan. As impressive as this is, it falls short of the DS, which achieved sales figures of this nature in 56 weeks. But, the Wii did manage to beat the PS2, which cracked the 5 million mark after 66 weeks on the market.<br /><br />A system is only so good as its games though, right? Well, in Japan the games pushing the Wii are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/have-a-pint-and-a-go-at-wii-sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> (2.6 million copies sold as of now), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/happy-funtime-memorial-day-video-rejected-wii-play-minigames/"><em>Wii Play</em></a> (2.1 million copies sold as of now), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/metareview-mario-party-8/"><em>Mario Party 8</em></a> ( 1.1 million copies sold as of now) and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/an-accessory-for-the-balance-board-you-dont-own-yet/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> (1.1 million copies sold as of now). <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/super-mario-galaxy-gets-a-few-gdca-nods/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> comes in fifth place in the country, only selling a total of 843,961 copies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/wii-serves-over-5-million-in-japan/">Wii serves over 5 million in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. We have horrible coordination and the combination of alcohol into the mix would mean that we'd either <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/12/wii-safety-video-done-newsreel-style/">spill our drink</a> into our Wii or fall on it. That's just how we're built.<br /><br />You folks in England, however, have a bit more in the alcoholic coordination department, as playing the Wii has become the new "it" activity in the pub. It has inspired Team Europe, a company who manages Poker tournaments in pubs, to start up a similar tournament across pubs for the Wii. And, you can even find some tournaments going on right now, on a regular basis in London, should you be the type of person who enjoys immediate action. In fact, one such pub hosts a Wii tournament every Wednesday and enjoys a lot of support from the 30 or so players that show up for the event.<br /><br />This is just another example of the wonderful social aspect of the console, if you ask us.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&amp;newsid=24145">MAXCONSOLE</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/have-a-pint-and-a-go-at-wii-sports/">Have a pint and a go at Wii Sports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 16:00:00 EST. <br />Studies into how effective the Wii is for shedding pounds are not new. Earlier this year, one gamer committed himself to a six-week regime of playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wii%20Sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> for thirty minutes a day, and came out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/16/wii-workouts-really-do-work-it-out/">nine pounds lighter</a>. Not only that, but you should spend a day here at the Wii Fanboy offices -- it's all well-oiled, rippling biceps, bulging pectorals, and washboard stomachs. Sort of.<br /><br />Anyway, the scientific community has finally followed suit, with two UK-based researchers testing exactly how much of a workout Wii users are getting, compared to <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/">Xbox 360</a> gamers. Using teenagers as their subjects, the pair discovered that playing on the Wii burnt off an extra 60 calories per hour than gaming on the Xbox 360. Their conclusion? That while the Wii certainly helps with weight loss, it probably isn't an ideal substitute for regular exercise, cruelly scuppering our plans to work off post-holiday season pounds with some lengthy Wii Tennis sessions. Their findings were published in the <em>British Medical Journal</em>, no less. <br /><br />Admittedly, these results tell us little that we didn't already know, thanks to the experiment we mentioned in the first paragraph. But now that the same process has been carried out by the white coats, rather than Some Dude on the internet, some may claim it has an extra layer of credibility.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7155342.stm">BBC</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/science-community-tackles-wii-weight-loss-claims/">Science community tackles Wii weight loss claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Dec 2007 17:00:00 EST. While things like LOLcatz and coffee definitely make the list (oh right, and our families and friends, we guess), we wanted to show a little appreciation for the Wii as well. The Nintendo Wii Fanboy staff was thus asked what about the Wii we are most thankful for. The following is what happens when you have a staff with the collective maturity level of 37% (calculated by science).<strong><br /></strong><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/what-were-thankful-for-wii-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What we're thankful for: Wii edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/what-were-thankful-for-wii-edition/">What we're thankful for: Wii edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST. Hudson's <em>Wii Sports</em> clone (or wannabe sequel, depending on how you look at it) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/deca-sporta-debuts-new-site/"><em>Deca Sporta</em></a> will be making its way to North America. If compilations of 10 different sports minigames is your sort of thing, then Hudson's title might be right up your alley. <br />Here's one you probably won't find on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/nintendo-launches-mywiistory-com/">My Wii Story</a>. A young soldier goes to war in Iraq, taking his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/">DS</a> and (eventually) Wii with him. While he's away, playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/WiiSports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> with his army buddies, his wife begins to conduct an affair with a ten-pin bowling champion. A little over a year later, the soldier returns to wagging tongues, tips from friends about his wife's indiscretions, and e-mails that reveal plans for his wife and her lover to run away together.<br /><br />Heartbroken, he turns on his Wii to reminisce about the friends he made in Iraq, and comes face to face with the final piece of incriminating evidence: the Mii of his wife's lover, and a list of the times and dates the pair played Wii Bowling together, forever secreted in his Wii's Calendar mode.<br /><br />This, if you were wondering, is the rather poignant tale of "Tony," who courageously sent his story to Go Nintendo. You can read his email in full at the link below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/cheating-wife-caught-out-by-her-lovers-mii/">Cheating wife caught out ... by her lover's Mii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. But outside of those and probably some other things, the two are the same.<br /><br /><em>THE Sports Daishuugo</em> contains five main games: baseball, golf, volleyball, tennis, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futsal">futsal</a>, as well as minigame variations on all of those. Like any decent casual sports game, it allows for multiplayer-- four-player single-card play.<br /><br />We're actually surprised by how bad this <em>doesn't</em> look. The characters are cute and the graphics are non-awful. We wonder if this cute sports game will take off in Japan, where <em>Wii Sports</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/wii-sports-and-wii-play-sell-one-million-copies-each-in-japan/">sells tons</a> as a standalone product.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/10/24/almost-wii-sports-ds/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/a-wii-sports-alike-on-the-ds-simple/">A Wii Sports-alike on the DS? The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the winners for their British Academy Video Game Awards and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock"><em>BioShock</em></a> came out on top, with <em>Wii Sports</em> winning most categories. The full <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=29884">list</a> can be found after break. <em>Wii Sports</em> won six of 13 awards, <em>Crackdown</em> won two awards, as did <em>Okami</em>.<br />
<br />
Crackdown developer RealTime Worlds was the most <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=29907">successful</a> European studio at the event, winning Best Action and Adventure and an audio award. Phil Wilson, producer of Crackdown, said, "BAFTA's are awards that are recognized and respected both outside the games industry and internationally, so we're incredibly proud that everyone's hard work has resulted in not just one but two of the prestigious gold masks." Great, now does that mean you'll finally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/no-crackdown-sequel-in-development/">start working on a sequel</a>?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/bafta-bioshock-game-of-the-year-wii-sports-wins-most-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BAFTA: BioShock game of the year, Wii Sports wins most awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/bafta-bioshock-game-of-the-year-wii-sports-wins-most-awards/">BAFTA: BioShock game of the year, Wii Sports wins most awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 10:55:00 EST. Their flagship title took home six awards, more than any other game. In fact, the only category in which <em>Wii Sports</em> was nominated, but <em>didn't</em> win was Best Game, which went to <em>Bioshock.</em><br /><br />The other big winner that Wii fans should be happy about is actually a PS2 game (for now). Clover Studio's brilliant <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/okami-wii-an-exact-port-of-ps2-game/"><em>Okami</em></a> was awarded in the categories of Artistic Achievement and Original Score, both of which are well-deserved. We can gladly concede those categories to <span style="font-style: italic;">Okami</span> over <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span> without much controversy.<br /><br />Check after the break for the full list of nominees and winners!<br /><br />*British Academy of Film and Television Arts; we didn't know without looking, either.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/wii-sports-cleans-up-at-baftas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Sports cleans up at BAFTAs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/wii-sports-cleans-up-at-baftas/">Wii Sports cleans up at BAFTAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 10:30:00 EST. Heck, we wouldn't be surprised if the console one day cured cancer on its own (probably using <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/wii-sports-still-fun-even-with-wiimote-jackets/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>).<br /><br />The latest center to take part in the phenomenon is none other than Bridgeport Hospital's Ahlbin Centers Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. There, stroke victim Barbara Everlith is enjoying the wonders of the console, taking part in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tennis"><em>Wii Sports: Tennis</em></a> and finding a new and exciting treatment option. Why, in the six weeks since beginning the program, her therapist Courtney Benedetto has said that Barbara has already gained some movement in her left hand. NEWS FLASH: Nintendo's hit minigame collection <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wiisports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> can still be played, even after the addition of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/nintendo-cares-about-wiimote-safety/">squishy silicone sleeve</a> to the Wii Remote. That's the message that Nintendo hopes to get out with these new videos, which depict normal, everyday families and friends enjoying <em>Wii Sports</em>. The three videos (the top three on the list, with the "new" labels) are all captioned with "Played using the Wii Remote jacket."<br /><br />We know we were worried that making the Wiimote more comfortable to hold would ruin our baseball swing, but this is apparently not the case! We're happy to spread the cheerful news that the remote jacket in no way seems to hamper the ability of these Wii fans to bowl, box, or be shrill.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200359">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/wii-sports-still-fun-even-with-wiimote-jackets/">Wii Sports still fun even with Wiimote jackets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 15:00:00 EST. <p>A GoNintendo reader who is either a retail employee or a delivery truck robber snapped this picture of the box for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/the-play-n-learn-bundle-issue-cleared-up-sort-of/">new jacket-included Wii package</a>. On the front, it looks exactly like the old Wii box, which is somewhat of a surprise. Since Nintendo wants so badly for us to use the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/nintendo-cares-about-wiimote-safety/">jackets</a>, we assumed that every Nintendo promotional photo would show a jacketed Wiimote. Nintendo seems to have recognized the importance of their iconic Wiimote design, and put it over the potential danger of suggesting that a Wiimote could <em>ever</em> be used <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Jacket_Required">sans jacket</a></em>.</p>
<p>Speaking of iconic, the back of the box (well, we <em>guess </em>it's the back) has been refocused, removing the Wiimote picture (which is, in fact, already <em>totally covered</em> on the other side) and replacing it with a <em>Wii Sports</em> logo and some little screenshots in circles. Just to make sure that everyone knows that <em>Wii Sports</em> is in there. Could this be a precursor to future Wii packages that reflect different included games in their package designs? Probably not-- this is just Nintendo making sure the <em>Wii Sports</em> presence on the package is as big as possible (while still counting as <em>minimalist</em>).</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/new-wii-boxes-trumpet-wii-sports-hide-jackets/">New Wii boxes trumpet Wii Sports, hide jackets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Oct 2007 09:45:00 EST. Japanese business paper The Nikkei recently published a piece titled <em>Software Houses Miscalculate Audience, Demand For Wii</em>, wherein author Tomoyuki Kawai cites that many inside sources are not looking to the Wii with such a favorable eye any longer. The big worry is that all of this success the Wii has had has only benefited Nintendo and them alone, with many third-party developers jumping on board only to be left with titles on their hands that failed to sell. It's these development studios that are supposedly not profiting compared to their previous year earnings, the result being a lack of support for the console and no desire to commit to it in the future.<br /><br />The piece goes on to say that a lot of the Wiis picked up by consumers have only started to gather dust (it's unconfirmed if this is the same report <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/67-of-wii-owners-havent-touched-the-console-recently/">we've posted</a> about here earlier).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/wii-popularity-bubble-about-to-burst/">Wii popularity bubble about to burst?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 23:02:00 EST. It seems the Wii is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/even-cavemen-dig-the-wii/">hip new thing</a> for sitcom characters. Actually, the Wii is the hip new thing <em>period</em>, so we guess its latest appearance on CBS sitcom <em>How I Met Your Mother</em> is appropriate. And, for two men engaged in the heat of battle to choose an evening of Wii over the adventures that wait in the outside world is something we can identify with. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=26802">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/wii-invades-another-sitcom/">Wii invades another sitcom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 18:15:00 EST. We even love the spirit of competition. Heck, we love <em>lots of things</em> these days. <br /><br />So, with that in mind, we bring forth this video of the first game being played in the First Annual Erickson Sports Nintendo Wii Bowling Championship. And, like any kind of championship, we're impressed by the presentation of it all. Oh, one other thing: don't mess with Charlie "The Hook" Dierbach. That man looks like he's liable to <em>mess you up.</em><br /><br /><em>You got served!</em><br /><br /><font color="red">Update</font>: Wow, me am not good at grammar. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominees for its 2007 Video Game Awards. Topping the list with most nominations is <em>Wii Sports</em> with seven, including the Innovation and Best Game categories. There is four-way tie for second most nominations, with <em>Crackdown, Gears of War, Okami</em> and <em>God of War 2</em> having five nominations apiece.<br /><br />Other best game nominees include <em>BioShock</em>, <em>Crysis</em>, <em>Gears of War</em>, <em>Guitar Hero II</em> and <em>Kane &amp; Lynch. </em>Of those, two titles haven't yet been released. If <em>Crysis </em>and <em>Kane &amp; Lynch </em>somehow get delayed until 2008, will be the eligible for next year's awards, too?<br /><br />There are 15 categories, including Artistic Achievement and Best Story/Characters. Winners will be announced October 23; you can view the full list after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/wii-sports-tops-2007-bafta-nominees/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Sports tops 2007 BAFTA nominees</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/28/wii-sports-tops-2007-bafta-nominees/">Wii Sports tops 2007 BAFTA nominees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 18:00:00 EST.
