Nearly three years since the game was first released at the PSP launch, Wipeout Pure makes yet another debut. This time, it's downloadable on the PLAYSTATION Store for a mere $15. Even with its age, Pure remains one of the best games on the system, thanks to its great level designs, fantastic music, balanced weapons system, and tight controls. By going downloadable, the game has also shed most of its load times, making this re-release of Pure the best Wipeout to date.

Wipeout is instantly recognizable to any fan of futuristic racing. It's gone through many changes since the original PS1 title, and Pure is easily the most refined game in the series so far. It's no surprise you'll be rushing through futuristic environments in a race to the goal. However, what you can do while on the tracks is what makes Wipeout so appealing. The weapons system in Pure is the best the franchise has offered. The varied effects of each weapon are devastating, but not overly so to make the game too combat-heavy. Targeting is much more intuitive than it ever has before, and players will find themselves scoring more hits than ever. Players must constantly watch out for their ship health, and this is one of Pure's most clever design choices: allowing players to absorb weapons to regain health. Instead of using a rocket, for example, you can absorb it and gain some of your health back. This forces players to think about their priorities every time they receive a weapon: to use, to save or to absorb?

Gallery: Wipeout Pure

Continue reading PSP Fanboy review: Wipeout Pure

PSP Fanboy review: Wipeout Pure originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 17:00:00 EST. Don't worry Eric, we got your back. Because we love our readers, we've uploaded all the tracks that were released post-launch. These levels add a significant amount of gameplay to the already-amazing launch title.

Download the ZIP file.

Extract the contents of the zip file (there should be many folders that start with UCUS).

Connect your PSP via USB.

Browse the Memory Stick. Save folders in PSP/SAVEDATA.

It's provided us with a great number of downloadable demos and other goodies. However, it looks to be getting an overhaul. What new upgrades might the site be receiving? Full downloadable games, if this page from the UK PlayStation site is to be believed.

To the right of the page, links to downloadable demos of Loco Roco, Killzone and Ridge Racer 2 can be found. But more interesting are the descriptions for Wipeout: Pure and Go! Sudoku: "Download full game now."

Sony has promised that the PLAYSTATION Store would one day find its way to PSP. As they've shown with the PS3, full downloadable games are a crucial part of Sony's strategy. Could Europe be the first region to receive downloadable retail games? If so, how will it work? When will it expand to other countries? Was the web version of the PLAYSTATION Store the beginning of something bigger? Stay tuned for more.
The unsurprising revelation has been tied to Sony's downloadable content strategy. Liverpool's WipEout Pure showed promise, registering more than 800,000 downloads of add-on content, but subsequent Sony efforts have failed to follow suit.

Liverpool plans to pick up the slack with upcoming versions of WipEout. "Downloadable content helped keep [WipEout Pure] on the shelf and encouraged people to not trade the game in," explained development director Clemens Wangerin, adding, "Being able to cater to a much finer resolution of gamers' tastes and maybe create more byte-sized or customizable gaming is a massive advantage." Sounds like Sony's starting to understand the importance of PlayStation Network.
The great graphics, music and gameplay were fantastic, but the incredible amount of downloadable content is what made it one of the best games on the handheld. For months after the game's launch, we were presented with tons of new tracks and ships, essentially doubling the length of the game for free, making it one of the greatest values on the system (especially at Greatest Hits price). While the team has gone quiet since the last update, it appears that Sony is officially announcing the end of downloads... in Japan, at least.

It's a little sad to know that there will most likely never be downloads again for Wipeout: Pure, but hopefully that means that the team is working on what I really want now: a sequel.
Today, PSP's Greatest Hits lineup will be available in stores. There are five games that'll carry the Greatest Hits tag and be priced at $19.99 at your favorite retailer:

Ape Escape: On the Loose

ATV Offroad Furty: Blazin' Trails

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee

Twisted Metal: Head-On

Wipeout Pure

My personal recommendation is Wipeout Pure: the game features incredible presentation and offers a ton of depth, especially with downloadable content that doubles the content of the game. If you're looking for a real deal, you might want to wait a little while. Circuit City will be having a 2 for $30 sale starting 7/30 for all games $19.99 and under (which includes PSP Greatest Hits and more).
[Update 1: Sony has said that third-party games will achieve Greatest Hits status later this year. Specifically, Lumines, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and Star Wars Battlefront II are all due to go easier on gamers' wallets. Sony realizes this and has made the move to bring you Wipeout Pure: Stealth Edition. While I hope this isn't just their cure for a certain lackluster Hollywood release, this definitely has the potential to open up a lot of doors. What would be more enterprising than bundling a popular movie and its very own video game counterpart in the same media package? I could see this happening with Harry Potter or other similar brands as time goes on.
Stealth plus Wipeout Pure bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Dec 2005 11:30:00 EST. Delta Pack 1 introduces 2 new tracks, Iridia and Anulpha Pass, plus the Assegai and Harimau interface skins. We really have to appreciate the commitment to extend the longevity of this title. But besides Pure, downloadable content has been sorely absent from the PSP's slim library. Let's hope developers & publishers start to change that.

You've got to be pretty impressed with Sony's commitment to release new content for WipEout Pure. Admittedly, the original package was a bit light on content, but quality alone ranks Pure in the "must have" PSP category. Today, the second Gamma Pack of extra content with be released for download and contains two new tracks, Extostra Run & Ubermall, and two new skins, Qirex & Auricom. Gamma Pack 1 has also been re-formatted and must be downloaded again.
The first official download for WipEout Pure has been released. The Gamma Pack includes the "finest and final" Tigron craft, the Piranha Team skin, and a new course. The Staten Park track promises to be "an evening blast through the green belt of Makana Island." The download is compatible with all versions of the PSP and WipEout Pure. Enjoy.

If you're a Wipeout Pure freak, and you can't find anyone local to match your mad skills, then check this out. Someone has figured out a way to share ghosts by extracting the correct file from the memory stick. He's posted some of his races for you to grab. One idea we want to throw out there is to share the files on PSP Vault. Unfortunately, there's no description of the save's contents, only that it's a WipEout Pure file. At any rate, it's a significant milestone and likely the beginning of an important trend. Ain't it great to share?

"The graphics are breathtaking... controls are impeccable... the purest form of racing."

Wipeout Pure Review originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Mar 2005 13:02:00 EST.
