Though it's fun unleashing the Force, wouldn't it be better if you could unleash the Force while pretending you're a good Jedi that has completely lost his mind? The people at LucasArts seem to think so: They'll be releasing new costumes for The Force Unleashed's single-player campaign this fall, including Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Kit Fisto. We've put an "in-game" picture of Fisto after the break, but he looks more like he's been pasted in from the cover of a Star Wars novel.

And later this year, look for a new mission in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where the Apprentice will "learn more about his father, and while searching through the rubble of the destroyed building he must confront his inner demons."

Neither the price nor specific dates for either of the DLC packs has yet been unlea-- err, revealed. We'll keep you posted.
This Wednesday sees a <strike>sole</strike> new Xbox Live Arcade release in the form of War World, a third-person shooter set in a typically mech-infested milieu. Aside from an assortment of bipedal tanks, War World offers players a 100-level single-player campaign, four multiplayer modes (deathmatch, CTF, etcetera) and best of all, "normal mapped diffuse and specular lighting," in exchange for 800 ($10).

It's also a much better deal than developer Third Wave Games' previous title, Peace World, which pretty much everyone found to be a boring, unrealistic and touchy-feely affair.

Update: Oops! We forgot about Mega Man 9. The Red Hot Chili Pepper's acclaimed Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, featuring at least one thinly veiled junkie ballad you memorized during adolescence, will arrive in the Rock Band Store next week. Let's hope it shows a bit more professionalism than the last full album to crash the living room stage!

Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1600 / $20)* or by individual track (160 / $2):
Microsoft today released -- and promptly pulled -- a press release via Gamerscore blog (original link; via TeamXbox) announcing that the Banjo-Kazooie Nintendo 64 remake is coming "exclusively" (i.e. we're guessing no Virtual Console release) to Xbox Live Arcade on November 26 for 1200 ($15). Additionally, Microsoft announced a Banjo-Tooie remake is coming in early 2009.

Those who pre-order Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts will get it about two weeks early (the game launches just under two weeks prior on November 14). Achievements in Banjo-Kazooie will unlock content in Nuts and Bolts via the "Stop n Swop" mode. <strike>We don't know why Microsoft pulled the press release, but we'll let you know when it's back up.</strike> Update: It's back up.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PSA: Xbox Live down Sept. 29 to prep NXE

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Online

Freeze! Not so fast. Step away from the calendar. That's right, put the marker down. September 29th is not the day your new Mii-er-crosoft Avatar will be delivered to your dashboard. It's not as easy as ringing up the storks, you know. Making Avatars and all those other newfangled Xbox experiments take time. It's like a delicate dance. No, that's not right. It's like a service-wide blackout. If you log on to to your Xbox Live account, you're going to notice that your Gamerscore now looks comparatively paltry, thanks to an additional 750 points available for the game. Their source? The 30 new Achievements for Halo Mythic (whatever that is) have gone live for Xbox 360 players.

As you peruse the list, you'll find rewards for finding skulls in six different areas: Assembly, Citadel, Heretic, Longshore, Orbital and Sandbox. We're thinking new levels, but the presence of skulls has us wondering if they're single- or multiplayer. Speculate away!
Microsoft has provided a snapshot of the completely unofficial president election poll it's been running in conjunction with Rock the Vote. The idea was to offer Gamerpics representing Obama-Biden, McCain-Palin, Independent, and, er, "Other" (hopefully) sparking an interest in actual voting by offering the choice to select one as your public and/or private icon. MS says more than 100,000 Live users have participated to date.

Today's tally has Obama-Biden in a 12% lead over their Republican rivals, garnering 43% of the vote to McCain-Palin's 31%. Independents and "Others" combined account for the remaining (and sizable) 26% of "votes." Listen, "Others" - if you're undecided, you'd best at least register and cast your vote on November 4. We don't care who it's for; just vote, 'kay? Thanks!

In an effort to promote more heinous killing sprees*, Rockstar is hosting a Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox Live weekend September 26-28. Instead of going the Call of Duty 4 route and offering extra experience points, the developer is running a Play & Win contest for various GTA IV gear.

There are 24 prizes each day for those who sign on and play multiplayer, and each of those winners will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize that includes the Xbox 360 Elite, a 12-month XBL Gold card and 4,000. The hardest of hardcore among you probably have this marked on your calendar, but, in case you've forgotten, allow us to remind you that the demo for LucasArts' terraforming action game Fracture and "Burnout Paradise Bikes," which ... adds bikes ... to Burnout Paradise, both go live on Xbox Live and PSN today.

To help us stay well below our Comcast 250 GB limit, we'd like to humbly suggest these two products be merged into one. "Earthosaur: The Terraforming Bike: The Game," puts you, Det. Dirk Dangerstein behind the handlebars of Earthosaur, a bike that has the power to shift the very earth it prowls like a silent, prowling fox. ... Also, the bike is possessed by your ex-partner, who was killed in a gangland shootout. ... And it can transform into a robot dinosaur.

How about it, Silicon Valley? How about it?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Microsoft confirms GTA IV DLC for Fall 2008

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

At last, confirmation that doesn't come from a nebulous internet entity or a gravelly voiced figure in a trench coat. Not that we have anything against those two fine and often charismatic sources of information, but we're just a teensy bit more confident in Microsoft's confirmation (and corroboration) to us that "exclusive episodes for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' will be available on Xbox 360 starting fall 2008." That's quite a bit better than the rumored January, we think.

Details regarding the crime caper's new episodes are still officially non-existent, but nebulous internet entities and gravelly voiced figures in trench coats all agree: it'll likely involve car theft and other illegal shenanigans.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Castle Crashers seizes 250,000 players

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

Speaking to Gamasutra, indie developer The Behemoth has revealed that 250,000 players have now experienced the joys of barging into throne rooms and slaughtering evil, fish-wielding bear ... things. Castle Crashers' lead artist, Dan Paladin, said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the game's success. "I was optimistic and hopeful for Castle Crashers but I wasn't prepared for the reception it got."

Of course, neither was the game's online capabilities, with Paladin re-re-re-re-iterating that work on a soothing patch continues unabated. The latest (free!) downloadable update to Criterion's car-crumpling crashtravaganza, Burnout Paradise, has been scheduled to arrive next week on September 18th -- sans two wheels. The Burnout Bikes pack (hands-on impressions here) adds 38 new against-the-clock race events, a customizable day/night cycle, dynamic weather effects, 70 new Freeburn challenges and ... oh yes, motorcycles.

We hope other folks in the industry are learning a thing or two from Criterion's robust support of Burnout Paradise. Oh, sure, we like the freeness of it all, but what we're really saying is that we want downloadable motorcycles for everything. Yes, including Too Human.

(Note: We're checking if this applies to both platforms. There's no mention of either in the announcement. Update: Burnout Bikes will hit the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 simultaneously.)

Gallery: Burnout Paradise Bikes Pack

[Thanks, Stephen]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Force Unleashed demo breaks XBLM download record

Filed under: Culture, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

It's not just stormtroopers and trees that have been splintered by Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, but download records as well. LucasArts announced that the game's Xbox Live demo has force choked download records for the service, surpassing a million downloads in just eight days following its August debut -- a feat one day better than the previous record according to the company.

Boasting further, LucasArts adds that together with the game's PSN demo, The Force Unleashed appetizer has been downloaded more than 2.3 million times worldwide. Most impressive, though we wonder how many people gave up their place in line camped out waiting for the game's September 16 release in order to actually try it out.

[Via press release]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

You're not worthy: GameStop eXpo rumors

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business

Every year (well, at least since being banned from E3) the grand minions of GameStop Corp. descend upon the dessert oasis that is Las Vegas, Nevada -- with a Capital X -- to become better informed about their retail products, so as to make professional recommendations to their far less knowledgeable customer base. With a few cleverly placed posers, 1UP has infiltrated the sore-thumbed masses of regional managers who have traveled great distances to earn bragging rights over the adolescents who, in turn, loiter inside their finely vacuumed establishments. Finally, some payoff for another hard year of underachievement (remember kids, these are just rumors):
Hoping to shatter our notions of shooters and the rigid environments they take place in, LucasArts' Fracture is set to debut in demo form via the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on Thursday, September 18th. If you recall (and let's face it, you probably don't), Fracture's biggest back-of-the-box bullet point is "Terrain Deformation," which allows players to reshape the landscape in the midst of frantic combat.

The interactive teaser is an opportunity to "create cover, solve puzzles and revolutionize battlefield tactics," says LucasArts, shortly before reminding us that Fracture will dash onto the retail stage and break its metaphorical leg on October 7th in North America, and October 10th in Europe. Let's hope big "L" steps up the marketing campaign just a tad before then.

Gallery: Fracture

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Castle Crashers patch still without release date

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Online

Look guys, the cute little cartoon characters thing? Yeah, that ain't workin' so much these days. Not coincidentally, today also marks the first day of the new Xbox 360 price drop.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Play with Mercenaries 2 devs, 'catch' an Achievement

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Online

One of the more ... interesting Achievements in the Xbox 360 version of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is the 50-point "Everybody Wants Some," which is earned by playing online with one of the game's developers, or someone who's already played with them. Yep, it's contagious. Actually, it's sort of like the STD of Live Achievements, if you'll pardon the icky analogy.

We think it'd be pretty cool to hear the 360 "Achievement Unlocked" sound in real life every time we came down with a cold or other ailment. Hear that Microsoft? Get on it - after all, you were all about "Live Anywhere." Mercs 2's devs will be playing September 5 through 12 using special easy-to-grok Gamertags, which we've listed after the break. Now, go forth and expose yourself to viral goodness.

When the Joystiq staff goes back to Call of Duty 4, it's usually because we're tired of getting our asses handed to us on a little silver platter in practically every other first-person shooter. Before too long we pine for the one game we've played enough that we're not embarrassed to admit to our team that we write about video games professionally.

But, according to Infinity Ward spokesman Fourzerotwo, we'll have additional reason to go back Sept. 13-14, when CoD 4 will be offering up double XP on PSN and Xbox Live. Come, play with us, and tremble before our staggering (and doubly rewarding) moderate competence.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
