Our families are meant to be the one guaranteed bit of love we have in this often cruel world - people who will support and embrace us even when the rest of creation has turned its back. But the tragedy of an abusive parent (usually driven by alcohol, drugs, or their own traumatic experience) casts a person that's meant to be a child's loving caretaker into the role of an enemy. Parental abuse turns what's meant to be one of the purest relationships of love into one of anger, distrust, and violence.<br /><br /><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/papo-yo"><em>Papo &amp; Yo</em></a> is a game about that tragedy. It's about a relationship that is by turns loving, gentle, and even playful, but can instantly turn into something ugly and full of violence and pain.<br /><br />As a video game, <em>Papo &amp; Yo</em> can be lacking - the mechanics are simple, and while the technology is capable of creating some beautiful moments, it's just as capable of being frustrating. As an expression of autobiographical emotion for creator Vander Caballero, however, and a rendition of the complicated relationship between a young son and his abusive father, <em>Papo &amp; Yo</em> succeeds in the strongest ways.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/">Papo &amp; Yo (E3 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/#5074677"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/papo--yo-e31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/#5074678"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/papo--yo-e32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/#5074679"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/papo--yo-e33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/#5074680"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/papo--yo-e34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/papo-and-yo-e3-2012/#5074681"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/papo--yo-e35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/14/papo-and-yo-review-father-knows-beast/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Papo &amp; Yo review: Father knows beast</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/14/papo-and-yo-review-father-knows-beast/">Papo &amp; Yo review: Father knows beast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/22/humble-indie-bundle-4-abused-by-scrooge-like-steam-scamming/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/gamsteamholidayz530.jpg" style="border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 4px; margin-right: 4px; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; " /></a></div>
This is how nice things like Humble Indie Bundles stop happening: the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/humble-indie-bundle-adds-five-more-games-and-their-soundtracks/">Humble Indie Bundle 4</a>, which also supports charities like the Red Cross and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/childs-play">Child's Play</a>, has people abusing the system for grinchy gain. Here's how the scam worked: oogie-boogies purchased the bundle for a penny, then used the Steam codes from the bundle "to 'legitimize' automated Steam accounts in order to increase their odds of winning prizes in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/steams-holiday-sale-discounts-everything-ever-gives-gifts-gam/">Valve's current raffle promotion</a>."<br />
<br />
"This is unfair to legitimate entrants and is definitely not what we wanted to encourage with Humble Indie Bundle 4," wrote organizers on the <a href="http://blog.humblebundle.com/post/14549340777/1-min-price-for-getting-steam-keys">Humble Bundle blog</a>. "It's a lose-lose situation for the indie developers, charities, Valve, and Humble Bundle."<br />
<br />
New orders now have a required purchase price of $1 to obtain Steam keys. For those who can't afford the dollar (*glares at your $5 mocha*), a Steam key can be provided by contacting the support team and promising "not to resell" or "otherwise abuse it."<br />
<br />
It's a fair compromise to a sad situation that shouldn't have happened in the first place.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/22/humble-indie-bundle-4-abused-by-scrooge-like-steam-scamming/">Humble Indie Bundle 4 abused by Scrooge-like Steam scamming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 13:10:00 EST. So what happens when G4 gets two guys to break sh*t? Well, you get an interesting experiment to see which console is the most durable. The PS3, 360 and Wii are all put to the test in an incredible test of physical endurance. Which one comes out on top? Thankfully, the PS3. Considering the machine costs at least $400, we're glad to see it able to take such abuse. In last place? Well, just watch the video.<br /><br />Check out the video, after the cut.<br /><br />[Thanks, Zack!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/ps3-is-the-strongest-console-around-and-were-not-talking-about/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PS3 is the strongest console around (and we're not talking about tech)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/ps3-is-the-strongest-console-around-and-were-not-talking-about/">PS3 is the strongest console around (and we're not talking about tech)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 10:20:00 EST. Clearly, console modding comes to the guy about as easily as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkoJR7xOE6Q">counting backwards</a> comes to Tara Reid. A retrospective study on this phenom reveals some startling truths about our favorite crimson-adorned pipe-jockey: a history of drug addiction, racism, and dealings with the seediest portions of the underworld. <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/six-sinister-things-about-super-mario-28654.phtml">Destructoid</a> has put together an eye-opening list of the egregious offenses this plumber has leveled against you, the gaming populace, and it's your responsibility to educate yourselves forthright.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/20/mario-is-the-downfall-of-our-society/">Mario is the downfall of our society</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 16:00:00 EST. Griefing has always been a problem where real players compete against their peers, although with massively multiplayer online games the problem has become much more serious. Earning a battleship in <em>Eve Online</em> or crafting a special item in <em>World of Warcraft</em> can take weeks if not months of game time. On top of that, the recent trend for people to sell items on auction sites like eBay has meant that rare online items have a monetary value.<br /><br />The article cites several high profile situations where griefers have bent moral codes with the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=172529">Guiding Hand Social Club's ruination of Ubiqua Seraph</a> in <em>Eve Online</em> and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/17/funeral-crashing-in-wow/">funeral crash in <em>WoW</em></a> being the two main examples. Solutions that companies have come up with to limit these types of situations from happening are also looked at with the Xbox Live points system and strong community measures (like guilds and friend lists) being top on the list of letting players self-govern the problem. Effective community governance is essential if companies want to keep players inside the game and so that the owners don't have to resort to more drastic measures, like Blizzard does with its <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2006/06/12/blizzard-closes-another-round-of-accounts/">periodic account banning binges.</a><br /><br /><em>Update: fixed a couple of minor grammatical errors.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/15/griefing-and-self-governance-in-online-games/">Griefing and self-governance in online games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Jun 2006 06:30:00 EST.
