Capcom VP explains why Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is eShop only, Japanese demo now available

Capcom VP Christian "Sven" Svensson has shed some light on why Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is destined solely for the 3DS eShop in the west. Responding to users on the Capcom-Unity forums, Svensson stated that while he understands "the value" of owning a physical copy of a game, "it is a sign of the times that increasingly our business is going digital and not everything is going to be in both formats."

"Not every game is appropriate for both formats given the economics involved," he wrote, pointing to games like Darkstalkers Resurrection, Resident Evil 4 HD and Okami HD, which were released physically in Japan but digitally in the west. "Their COGS (costs of goods sold) and retail margins and reserve issues are entirely different there given the market differences," wrote Svensson. "It's a sad fact, but it's still a fact."

He added Capcom's US operation "worked very hard" to see Dual Destinies released in the west. "If we'd said 'no, it's not coming', it would have triggered the inevitable 'please bring it to eShop, at least' cries. Instead we shortcutted that and brought it straight to eShop."

In other gavel-banging news, a playable browser demo of Dual Destinies is now available on the game's Japanese website. Just make sure your Kanji is up to snuff if you hope to make heads or tails of it. Finally, Gematsu reports that the latest Famitsu confirms that both Miles Edgeworth and Trucy Wright will make a return appearance in the game.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 5 hits west as Dual Destinies this autumn

Ace Attorney 5 is scheduled to appear in North America and Europe this autumn, now under the new legal name of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies. Capcom says it's releasing the 3DS game in the west digitally (on the eShop).

An Ace Attorney 5 special edition you can't have, and a trailer you can

Ace Attorney 5 will be released July 25 in Japan, with a special edition containing a Phoenix Wright figurine (to scale with the Edgeworth figurine released alongside the sorely missed Ace Attorney Investigations 2), a 3DS case patterned after the colors of Phoenix's suit, and as yet unrevealed decorative stickers with chibi characters on them.

Various permutations of the special bundle omit the figure and/or case; it's almost certain that none of these bundles will ever make it out of Japan. However, we were able to import this new trailer just fine!

We'll note that, in an unfortunate coincidence, the trailer begins with an animated sequence depicting a bomb going off.

Report: Ace Attorney 5 out July 25 in Japan

Capcom may not be officially ready to announce the release date for Ace Attorney 5, but investigators picked up evidence of a July 25 release in Japan. A page advertising an upcoming Q&A session originally said the game would be available on that date, before Capcom noticed its mistake and updated, according to Siliconera.

Capcom hasn't given a timeframe for a western release, intentionally or unintentionally, but the company is planning to localize the 3DS adventure game.

Shake hands, hearts with Ace Attorney 5's heroine, Kizuki Kokone

Ace Attorney 5 for 3DS features a new emotion reading system, provided by Wright Anything Agency's latest addition, Kizuki Kokone. We first got a glimpse of Kokone and her ability to read people's emotions in this trailer, but now Capcom provides more information about her powers and personal background, as translated by Siliconera.

Kokone's Heart Scope ability allows her to listen to the emotions behind a witness' testimony and suss out the truth behind contradictory statements or lies. The Heart Scope pulls up a screen with four emotions and a lot of "noise;" players must clear the static by finding discrepancies between different combinations of testimonies and emotions. Once the noise reaches 0 percent, that emotion reading becomes a fact for the case.

Ace Attorney 5 features full 3D animations for the first time, including within the courtroom and during investigations.

Ace Attorney 5 voice acting limited to 'those iconic key phrases'

The information from a Japanese interview, stating that Ace Attorney 5 would use full voice acting, was a mistranslation, or the message got garbled along the way somehow. Capcom community manager Brett Elston corrected the information in a tweet this week, shouting "Hold it!" before opening the Twitter post window (we imagine).

"Not the case," Elston. "Just those iconic key phrases!" The original interview, then, suggests that those clips will be re-recorded for the 3DS's improved audio capabilities.

Report: Ace Attorney 5 features full voiceover

According to a Nintendo Dream interview summarized by Siliconera, Ace Attorney 5 will use full voice acting in-game - not just the "Objection!" and "Take that!" we've grown used to. The team decided upon the change to make better use of the 3DS's surround sound capabilities, rather than simply porting over the DS/GBA sound effects.

While we're excited about more dynamic dialogue presentation, this news also worries us a bit. All that voiced dialogue is going to make localization even more expensive, and we don't want there to be any barriers keeping Capcom from giving us more Ace Attorney. The company has announced plans to localize it, but we're just ... worried. Always.

Update: Based on presentations in livestreams, Court-Records user Wooster speculates that the voice acting will be used mostly in cutscenes, rather than throughout. Wooster also brings up the point that the existing voice clips will all have to be replaced, as the actors were non-professional (creator Shu Takumi in Japanese as Phoenix, and ex-Capcom producer Ben Judd in English). Ace Attorney 5 trailer reveals emotion reading system, inspires emotions

The only thing that could make this TGS trailer for Ace Attorney 5 - which features the new 3D models in motion for the first time - any more interesting is if you could understand the dialogue. And now, thanks to YouTube user and subtitler Bolt2nd, now you can totally understand what's happening.

And what's happening is a new system that lets you watch for contradictory emotional responses during testimony. To help with this, new partner Kokone appears to have some kind of empathic ability. It's not an Ace Attorney courtroom without psychic powers!

Ace Attorney 5 coming to US and Europe

We may be missing out on Ace Attorney Investigations 2, but new testimony from Capcom reveals that "Capcom is planning to release Gyakuten Saiban 5 (Ace Attorney 5) in the West," meaning both the US and Europe. A Capcom representative revealed that welcome news to Kotaku, adding "We'll have more news soon."

Capcom opened the official site for the 3DS game today, allowing us a clear look at the new 3D models. Not bad! We suppose Capcom can retire the old Phoenix sprites after using them in three separate games. Besides, he got a nice new vest with his new render!

Ace Attorney 5 will be a 3DS jam

The latest issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu confirms Ace Attorney 5 as coming to 3DS, according to Andriasang. Up until this point, we only knew that it existed and that, well ... that's pretty much all we knew.

Now we know that Phoenix Wright returns as the protagonist, one year after the events of Apollo Justice, and interacts with a new partner dressed in a primarily yellow outfit. There's still no word on when the game will come out in Japan (though it will be playable at Tokyo Game Show), or if it'll ever be localized for western countries.

The most recent game in the series, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, was not translated by Capcom.

Capcom announces Ace Attorney 5, HD iOS versions of 1-3

At a 10th anniversary event for the Ace Attorney series in Tokyo, Capcom officially announced Ace Attorney 5, revealing the above logo. No specifics about the game were offered, including date, platform, or characters -- and there's no character silhouette in the logo to show us who the star is. All we know is that there is one, and we have to start presenting our case for a localization to Capcom.

The event also brought a small amount of news relating to Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney for 3DS: the animated cutscenes are produced by anime studio Bones, and the game is due sometime this year. Famitsu has screens from one of these cutscenes, of Phoenix and Maya on a plane ride.

Finally, new HD versions of the first three Ace Attorneys will be released on iOS. Check this Famitsu article for screens of the newly refreshed sprites.
