While Namco Bandai's big news yesterday came with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/soul-calibur-iv-coming-july-29-in-regular-and-premium-editions/">weapons</a> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/namco-bandai-to-bring-original-soul-calibur-to-xbla/">hand</a>, the company also let slip that its long-running arcade-style aerial combat series, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/acecombat"><em>Ace Combat</em></a><em>,</em> has surpassed more than 10 million units sold worldwide, with the franchise's fifth offspring, <em>The Unsung War</em>, contributing more than a million to that total in North America alone.<br />
<br />
The series first took to the skies in 1995 with <em>Air Combat</em> for the original PlayStation, and has since enjoyed the company of eight additional sequels and spin-offs on multiple platforms, from the PS2 and PSP, to even 2005's <em>Ace Combat Advance</em> for the GBA, with the visually stunning <em>Ace Combat 6</em> for the Xbox 360 reminding us all that we feel the <em>need</em> ... the need for <em>speed</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/ace-combat-series-breaks-10-million-copies-sold/">Ace Combat series soars past 10 million copies sold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 12:00:00 EST. It was a tad controversial when <em>Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/ace-combat-6-revealed-as-an-xbox-360-exclusive/">announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive</a>. After all, Namco Bandai's <em>Ace Combat</em> series had cut its teeth on Sony's consoles for years. Now, however, the title might return to familiar territory, as UK-based PSM3 Magazine is reporting on <a href="http://www.gamegrep.com/pictures/7355-ace_combat_6_coming_to_ps3_in_2008/">the development of <em>Ace Combat 6</em> on PS3</a>.<br />
<br />
According to a brief blurb in the magazine, <em>Ace Combat 6</em> is scheduled for release later this year, and will feature online co-op. The blurb also mentions that the title will include its own custom controller (clearly referring to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/ace-combat-6-flight-stick-bundle/">Ace-Edge flight sticks</a> that were released alongside the 360 version). <br />
<br />
With no official word from Namco Bandai on the topic, we're hesitant to believe this one just yet, although breaking exclusivity agreements is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/19/devil-may-cry-4-no-longer-a-playstation-3-exclusive/">certainly not</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/lost-planet-finds-its-way-to-playstation-3-in-08/">unheard of</a> in this industry.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/joystiq-impressions-ace-combat-6/">Joystiq</a> got a chance to try out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ac6"><em>Ace Combat 6</em></a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e307">E3</a> last week, and they came away impressed. Of particular note are the game's incredible graphics. According to Joystiq, the earth below is damned near photo-realistic. Even individual buildings are actually rendered. Furthermore, the gameplay proves to be intense, with midair skirmishes occurring all throughout the open skies. Ground and naval combat come into play as well, and players have some control over that as well, being able to command allies to target certain enemies. Yup, not much bad to say about <em>Ace Combat 6</em> at all. Check out the game's jaw dropping graphics in the gallery below. Better yet, check out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/bringing-it-home-wrap-the-bigs-demo-and-the-end/">demo</a> on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/XboxLive/">Xbox Live</a>.<br />

Did the <em>Ace Combat</em> series ever look this good? I have to admit -- flight games were never a genre I enjoyed. However, one look at <em>Ace Combat 6</em> on Xbox 360 changed my opinion instantly. It looks jaw-droppingly gorgeous. If it weren't for the constant threat of war, we'd love to simply fly around and observe the environments. From afar, the world below looks photo-realistic. Remarkably, the world retains a great deal of detail even when flying up close. Namco Bandai has an incredible technical achievement on their hands: realizing that every building in the city below is actually rendered deserves applause.<br /><br />Beyond the graphics, we were impressed by the surprisingly intense gameplay. The field of play is huge, and skirmishes can occur at any point in the map. Aerial, ground and naval combats all come into play ... and thankfully, you have allies at your disposal. It only takes a simple press of the button to command awaiting ships to fire missiles at enemies. In our E3 demo, we saw a massive flurry of missiles come from supporting naval troops. Dozens of smoke trails filled the sky in a truly impressive display. Not only does it look good, but it added a great feeling of being part of an actual war, one with multiple fronts.<br /><br />Our brief time with <em>Ace Combat 6</em> was a fun, visceral experience. The game will support online multiplayer through Xbox Live ... and we can't wait. <em>Ace Combat 6</em> will be available exclusively for Xbox 360 later this year.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/">Ace Combat 6</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/#318300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/xtg-kanno-image411_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/#318299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/xtg-kanno-image400_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/#318298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/xtg-kanno-image398_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/#318297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/xtg-kanno-image394_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ace-combat-6/#318296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/07/xtg-kanno-image357_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/joystiq-impressions-ace-combat-6/">Joystiq impressions: Ace Combat 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 10:03:00 EST. In the latest episode of GameSpot's <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/shows/on-the-spot/"><em>On the Spot</em></a>, In Joon Hwang, Product Marketing Manager for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NamcoBandai/">Namco Bandai</a>, revealed that a demo for <em>Ace Combat 6</em> should be available on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/XboxLiveMarketplace/">Xbox Live Marketplace</a> next week. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AceCombat6/">Ace Combat 6</a></em> is the first in the flight combat series to appear on a non-Sony console and also the first new-gen entry in the series. Hwang notes that the game's support system has been revamped, and players will now be able give commands to naval, air, and ground combat units during play. Expect to hear more about <em>Ace Combat 6</em> from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/E3/">E3</a> next week.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NamcoBandai/">Namco Bandai</a> has <a href="http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/13724/Ace-Combat-6-ACEEDGE-Flightstick-Bundle-Announced/">announced</a> that it will release a special bundle for its upcoming aeronautical adventure, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AceCombat6/">Ace Combat 6</a></em>. The bundle will include the game, a limited edition Xbox 360 faceplate and the sweet flight stick combo seen above. The stick is manufactured by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/HORI/">HORI</a>, makers of the ultra-hard-to-find <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/23/insert-doa4-big-stick-joke-here/"><em>Dead or Alive</em> 4 arcade stick</a>. But how much does it cost, you say? Not $89.95! No, not $79.95. Not even $69.95! That's right, the <em>Ace Combat 6</em> bundle will retail for ... $150! The bundle is expected to arrive this holiday season.<br />

Any flight sim junkies out there willing to take the plunge?<br />

It's no <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Battalion"><em>Steel Battalion</em></a> control console, but who are we to be picky?<br />
<br />
Namco Bandai announced today an <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/AceCombat/">Ace Combat</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/acecombat6">6</a></em><em> </em>bundle that includes a flightstick dubbed Ace-Edge. The entire package, which also includes a custom Xbox 360 faceplate, will retail for $150. Flight enthusiasm may have the wallet for that, but we'll stick with a cheaper option like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Tiltboard/">Tiltboard</a>. Or more likely, we'll just play with our unmodded Xbox 360 controllers and be happy with that.<br />
<br />
<em>Ace Combat 6</em> is coming exclusively to Xbox 360 this holiday season.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/ace-combat-6-flight-stick-bundle/">Ace Combat 6 flight stick bundle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 02:15:00 EST. Turns out it is, but it's not a critical hit for massive damage. Just a regular ol' hit, since it has recently been revealed that the title will be a timed exclusive for the 360.<br /><br />The news is taken from the <a href="http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=67403">PS3Forums</a>, but they've gotten the information from the Official XBox Magazine, so we're going to let this one slide as the truth. The thing is -- when the PS3 owners get their hands on it after a few months, what sort of special features or tweaks will have been made? Seems we've something to get excited over after all. Oh, and no, the screenshot isn't the actual boxart. But it's a cool one.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/ace-combat-6-a-timed-exclusive-for-the-360/">Ace Combat 6: a Timed exclusive for the 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 18:00:00 EST. First Capcom announces that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/its-official-devil-may-cry-4-on-xbox-360/"><em>Devil May Cry 4</em></a> will be making an appearance on the Xbox 360, and now we've learned that <em>Ace Combat 6</em> is making the jump as well (we should really start keeping a checklist). A flight combat game, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ace_combat"><em>Ace Combat</em></a> has graced only Sony platforms since its inception, with entries in the series landing on PS1, PS2, and the PSP. The news comes from <a href="http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/20-03-2007-5047.html">Pro-G</a>, who in turn pulled the info from the latest Famitsu. Very little is known about the game except that it will feature combat between two factions. Online versus and co-op are also expected. The game is scheduled to arrive some time in 2007.<br />
<br />
Could this open the door for more major Namco franchises on the 360?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/ace-combat-flies-onto-360/">Ace Combat flies onto 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. Today, it's Namco Bandai's turn. Mirroring the Xbox 360 launch with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/07/25/xbox-summit-brings-japanese-support-to-the-xbox-360-ridge/"><em>Ridge Racer 6</em></a>, <em>Ace Combat 6: Kaiho e no Senbi</em> has been unveiled as an Xbox 360 exclusive.<br />
<br />
IGN did the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/21/famitsu-primer-for-the-uninitiated/">Famitsu</a> translation work for the rest of us and fished out <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/774/774129p1.html">the details</a>. Helming the project will be <em>Ace Combat</em> veterans Hiroyuki Ichiyanagi and Natsuki Isaki, serving as producer and director respectively. There will be two huge additions to the series with the first being the Dynamic Mission system. Players will be teaming up with ally pilots that can be manipulated to take care of various tasks outside the scope of the primary objective, which can then open up new missions mid-battle.<br />
<br />
The other addition? Online play, of course. While no number of players are mentioned, there are currently battle royal and team battle modes, as well as a co-operative play that allows players to team-up against an enemy force.<br />
<br />
<em>Ace Combat 6</em> is due out in Japan this year with no set release or announcement for the Western world, though expect one sooner than later.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/ace-combat-6-revealed-as-an-xbox-360-exclusive/">Ace Combat 6 revealed as an Xbox 360 exclusive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 12:30:00 EST. Just in time for next week's infamous <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_thursday">Black Thursday</a>, IGN has released its <a href="http://buyersguide.ign.com/2006/">2006 Holiday Buyer's Guide</a> and has also added their 10 choices for PSP games that should fill your stockings this Christmas. That's if you've been a good boy or girl, because if you've been bad, you get <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/22/psp-fanboy-review-family-guy/">Family Guy</a>.</em><br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception</em></li>
    <li><em>Daxter</em></li>
    <li><em>Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories</em></li>
    <li><em>Killzone: Liberation</em></li>
    <li><em>LocoRoco</em></li>
    <li><em>Medal of Honor Heroes</em></li>
    <li><em>Mercury Meltdown</em></li>
    <li><em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em></li>
    <li><em>Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror</em></li>
    <li><em>Tekken: Dark Resurrection</em></li>
</ul>
What, no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/sega-genesis-collection/"><em>Sega Genesis Collection</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/ea-replay/"><em>EA Replay</em></a>? And while <em>Daxter</em> is a very good game, I don't think too many kids will go <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=3aXrI3c2fkA">Nintendo 64 Kid</a> crazy over getting a game released in March. Still, this is a pretty decent list, and I can't argue with it too much. If you're PSP shopping for someone, you might want to refer to this list.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ign-picks-its-top-10-psp-games-for-this-holiday/">IGN picks its top 10 PSP games for this holiday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 14:00:00 EST. The critics have unanimously applauded the game's graphics, sound, music, depth and controls. With such care placed into games like <em>Tekken: Dark Resurrection</em> and the original <em>Ridge Racer</em>, it appears that Namco is quickly becoming the PSP's leading publisher. Let's see what the critics had to say:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/psp/sim/acecombatxskiesofdeception/review.html?page=1&amp;sid=6160375&amp;part=rss&amp;tag=gs_psp&amp;subj=6160375">Gamespot</a> (<strong>82/100</strong>) - "<em>Ace Combat X</em> plays surprisingly well on the PSP. Although its visuals aren't quite as slick as in the PS2 installments, it's a remarkably intense action game that you can take with you on the go."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamebrink.com/playstation-portable/1885-Ace_Combat_X_Skies_of_Deception-reviews.html">GameBrink</a> (<strong>89/100</strong>) - "I didn't think I'd see another quality air combat game like it until Namco's eventual PS3 outing but <em>Ace Combat X</em> has arrived to prove me wrong. From the visuals to the audio and the controls, the developers custom tailored the PS2 <em>Ace Combat</em> engine to fit in the PSP's profile. And they didn't just port it; they actually improved on it as if <em>Ace Combat X</em> was the next title in the series and not a portable spin-off."</li>
    <li><a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/740/740813p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>87/100</strong>) - "<em>Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception</em> makes a spectacular landing on the PSP. It has everything longtime fans of the series could possibly want, along with a few extras they're probably not expecting. <em>Deception </em>also looks great and runs well, offering a near identical experience as what's on the PS2."</li>

I didn't plan on picking up <em>Ace Combat X</em>, but after all the great reviews, I think I may reconsider. The game is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FVM49Y?tag=prey0f&amp;camp=0&amp;creative=0&amp;linkCode=as1&amp;creativeASIN=B000FVM49Y&amp;adid=12WCBNQBG5HJA0KRZEXQ&amp;">now available</a> in stores.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/23/metareview-ace-combat-x/">Metareview: Ace Combat X</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Oct 2006 22:45:00 EST. But, thankfully, for those of us that can't read, they've included some <a href="http://media.psp.ign.com/media/822/822479/imgs_1.html">new screenshots</a> and the <a href="http://media.psp.ign.com/media/822/822479/vids_1.html">game's intro</a> as well. They reveal some of the features, such as the Medal System, Color Variation and Free Mission. The mini games listed include Touch and Go, Mid-Air Refueling Practice and Carrier Touch &amp; Go. While it doesn't sound too exciting to me, I'm sure those of you that were fascinated by planes will be absolutely enthralled.<br /><br />If you don't really feel like <em>reading</em> about these features, IGN has also posted <a href="http://media.psp.ign.com/media/822/822479/vids_1.html">two new trailers</a> of the game in motion. Graphically, it looks impressive, but it seems like that's a <em>given</em> for most PSP games these days. Because not all of us have time to read all the impressions and previews of all the games coming out, PSP Fanboy has created this nifty guide for <span style="font-style: italic;">all</span> the games that were previewed. You'll get a thumbs up or a thumbs down from the major video game news sites. If a game looks like it might be a real winner, we'll award it "The Official PSP Fanboy Entranced Korean Award." These are the games that'll end up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/13/giant-psp-entrances-korean-populace/">in Korea on giant PSPs</a>, luring people to their eventual doom. And, that's pretty cool. It's been slow to start, but more and more games have been adding support for internet play and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/downloadable">downloadable levels</a>, and they should be commended. <strong>The games that use Infrastructure mode include:</strong><br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank: Size Matters</em></li>
    <li><em>Monster Hunter Portable 2</em> (downloadable levels only)</li>
    <li><em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em></li>
    <li><em>Kingdom of Paradise 2</em> (downloadable items only)</li>
    <li><em>Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology</em> (online leaderboard &amp; downloadable levels only)</li>
    <li><em>Mahjong Fight Club</em></li>
    <li><em>P-Kara</em></li>
</ul>
While this isn't a huge list of games, it's a huge improvement over the early years of the system's life. I'm happy with the support we get from heavy-hitters like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/ratchet-and-clank/"><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-portable-ops/"><em>Metal Gear Solid</em></a>.<br /><br />[<strong>Update 1:</strong> This list is only of games present at TGS. There are tons of other games that feature wireless support that aren't on display.]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/23/tgs-06-which-games-support-wireless/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TGS 06: Which games support wireless?
