We spend so much time lavishing praise on our favorite video game characters, we never stop to wonder what they must think of us. Sony did, and the result is one of the best video game ads in recent memory. Just one complaint: <em>Where's Master Chief?</em> Thanks for the gratitude, <em>John</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/playstation-characters-say-thanks-in-awesome-new-ad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PlayStation characters say thanks in awesome new ad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/playstation-characters-say-thanks-in-awesome-new-ad/">PlayStation characters say thanks in awesome new ad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 09:45:00 EST. Kevin Butler is at it again, this time <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/TheKevinButler/status/118310312943435778">tweeting</a> a mysterious <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBuK3EcY6vk">commercial</a> that teases some sort of reveal for October 5. The commercial tells the story of two paratroopers entering a strange nightclub of sorts and is packed with PlayStation references, including Sweet Tooth's van from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/twisted-metal-2012"><em>Twisted Metal</em></a>, a <a href="http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/Metal_Gear_Mk._II">Metal Gear Mk. II</a> and a photo of Parappa the Rapper. We're also fairly certain we spotted a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vdh4TqWFfX4">PlayStation 9</a> in there.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/09/26/sony-releases-mysterious-reference-filled-video.aspx">Game Informer</a> surmises the ad is merely a precursor to Sony's holiday marketing blitz. It's a likely possibility, though the darkest parts of Joystiq's collective psyche fear it may be related to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/23/playstation-home-relaunches-this-fall-with-a-questing-system-th/">relaunch of PlayStation Home</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/super-secret-public-playstation-commercial-teases-something/">Super-secret public PlayStation commercial teases ... something</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 17:30:00 EST. Microsoft must be confident in early <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gears-of-war-3"><em>Gears of War 3</em></a> sales numbers, because the company has announced a new initiative to have "live" TV ads market the game. What this means is that during commercials, Microsoft will display the current number of players online in what we can only assume is an attempt to entice people who only want to play games that a lot of other people are playing.<br />
<br />
The ad campaign kicks off on September 23 and will run until October 3 in six different 30-second advertisements. Stephen McGill, Microsoft UK Xbox marketing director, says Microsoft is spending the big bucks to advertise <em>Gears</em>. "It is on the scale of what we did for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/halo-reach"><em>Halo Reach</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/halo-3"><em>Halo 3</em></a> -- television is the main centrepiece of the campaign."<br />
<br />
<em>Gears of War 3</em> launches worldwide today.<br />

Sony faux-spokesman Kevin Butler's no stranger to talking smack about competitors -- though, for the life of us, we never expected him to turn his scornful eye upon <em>infant dogs</em>. Check out the US commercial for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/eyepet"><em>EyePet</em></a> after the jump as we await a rebuttal from the dog people of the world.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/watch-your-back-puppies-kevin-butler-talks-up-eyepet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch your back, puppies: Kevin Butler talks up EyePet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/watch-your-back-puppies-kevin-butler-talks-up-eyepet/">Watch your back, puppies: Kevin Butler talks up EyePet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 02:00:00 EST. Sony, here's an idea: just let <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kevin-butler">Kevin Butler</a> control your entire company. Seriously, Sir Howard Stringer is a great guy and all, don't get us wrong -- we've been up plenty of nights bawling our eyes out while he cradled us in his big, burly arms, assuring us that the PS3 would in fact be okay -- but Kevin Butler has proven in his latest ad that he's more than capable for the job. <br />
<br />
Just look at the image above and tell us the guy isn't CEO material. Heck, even better: watch the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move/">PlayStation Move</a> ad for yourself past the break and try to tell us it isn't the highlight of your day!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/kevin-butler-shows-us-the-epic-side-of-playstation-move/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kevin Butler shows us the epic side of PlayStation Move</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/kevin-butler-shows-us-the-epic-side-of-playstation-move/">Kevin Butler shows us the epic side of PlayStation Move</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. If you've been thinking about picking up Black Rock's fresh-out-of-the-garage racer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/split-second"><em>Split/Second</em></a>, then you may want to keep Best Buy in mind. A tipster sent in a shot of next week's circular, which highlights the game's $20 savings. On top of the savings, you'll also net three Best Buy-exclusive cars -- not a bad deal, if we may say so.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Netflix/">Netflix</a> movie streaming may be available on all the major consoles in the States now, but it's the demographic-busting Wii that most recently got some high-quality ad treatment from the rental service. In the commercial, a gallant knight is off to fulfill his destiny and leaves "a piece" of himself behind for a young maiden. Without getting into the Freudian subtext oozing out of the ad, it's a pretty clever piece of marketing. Check it out after the break.<br />

One of the most iconic "power-ups" in gaming has to be <em>Metal Gear Solid</em>'s cardboard box. This new Japanese ad for Kojima's latest, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-peace-walker"><em>Peace Walker</em></a>, gives the stealthy item the spotlight. In the commercial, a Japanese schoolboy can be seen stalking a few of his fellow classmates. As he finds the two alone, he strikes, asking them to "please enter my box."<br />
<br />
Unfortunately for the girl, the box boy wasn't asking about her. He invites the other boy into the cardboard box, as the commercial introduces the new co-op box-wearing mechanic of <em>Peace Walker</em>. You can check it out after the break.<br />

<a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/02/23/heavy-rain-tv-ad-unveiled/">PlayStation Blog</a> has dropped the European advertisement for <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/02/23/heavy-rain-tv-ad-unveiled/"><em>Heavy Rain</em></a>. The ad, which you can watch after the break, places a <em>heavy</em> emphasis (geddit?) on the various choices that players make throughout the game. Specifically, it asks players to "start a journey that changes with every single decision." The PS Blog post notes that different versions of the ad will be airing in several countries over the next few weeks, so be sure to keep an eye out for it.<br />
<br />
If there's any justice in the universe, the US version will feature <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kevin-butler">Kevin Butler</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/watch-heavy-rains-european-tv-ad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch Heavy Rain's European TV ad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/watch-heavy-rains-european-tv-ad/">Watch Heavy Rain's European TV ad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. It seems the marketing team behind <em>Dante's Inferno</em> hasn't burnt out yet, with several ASCII art campaigns popping up in the source code for several popular websites. All direct to the same <a href="http://hellisnigh.com/"><em>Dante's Inferno</em> site</a>. <br />
<br />
The first image (above) appeared in <a href="http://www.digg.com"> digg</a>'s code, as noted by <a href="http://www.brentcsutoras.com/2010/02/03/digg-hacked-clever-advertisement/">brentcsutoras</a>, and other sites like IGN, GameSpot and Kotaku also had their source code altered to display Dante-related images. It's one of the cuter, somewhat classier approaches to this title's marketing, and that makes it oddly noteworthy. <br />
<br />
If you're wondering why there's nothing in <em>our</em> source code (we're checking now just to make sure) ... we don't let anyone touch that. We consider it to be <em>at least</em> third base and you really have to get to know Joystiq before it's prepared to take the relationship to that level.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/hellacious-marketing-dantes-inferno-is-in-the-code/">Hellacious marketing: Dante's Inferno is in the code</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.thrfeed.com/2010/02/ea-dantes-inferno-super-bowl-ad-.html">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, CBS required some editing to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/report-ea-buys-super-bowl-ad-time-for-dantes-inferno/">EA's Super Bowl ad</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dantes-inferno"><em>Dante's Inferno</em></a> before it would expose America's fragile hive mind to it. No, it's not because of all the demons and the brimstone and stuff, but rather due to the game's widely-used tag line "Go to Hell." As you can seen in the clip after the jump, it's replaced by "Hell Awaits."<br />
<br />
The change is likely because of worries about offending conservative viewers, but we're secretly hoping that Doritos is launching a new super spicy chip during the big game and it just didn't want Dante copying its line. <br />

Because the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dantes-inferno"><em>Dante's Inferno</em></a> marketing department obviously knows what it's doing, <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/super-bowl-2010-viewers-going-to-hell-courtesy-of-ea/">IndustryGamers</a> reports that EA bought up some ad time during next month's Super Bowl, presumably in the hopes that some of the people watching will care enough to pick up the game when it's releases two days later. We have to wonder how many of these sports-watching people -- who are ostensibly not as interested in 14th century epic poetry -- will care about a guy with a self-inflicted sewing nightmare on his chest waging war through Hell.<br />
<br />
So, here's ample warning. When your parents inevitably drag you over to your uncle's house to watch the San Bernardino Flim-Flams take on the Texarkana Whatsits, and your little cousin -- you know, the one <em>way </em>too into Dashboard Confessional with the closet full of long-sleeve shirts with thumb holes cut out -- sees the ad and goes bananas, know that Joystiq gave you the heads up. We love you like that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/report-ea-buys-super-bowl-ad-time-for-dantes-inferno/">Report: EA buys Super Bowl ad time for Dante's Inferno</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 00:00:00 EST. The Spike VGAs this evening may very well reveal the first gameplay of upcoming MMA-er <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ufc">UFC Undisputed 2010</a></em>, but the most recent <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/gs/weeklyad/current/121109/olfsi_121109-2.aspx">GameStop weekly</a> is dropping <em>release date bombs</em> on us well before tonight's festivities kickoff. According to the ad, the game will be grappling onto store shelves on May 25 and, as you might imagine, you're welcome to "pre-order now!" <br />
<br />
While we're normally reticent to trust release dates from retailers as <em>absolute truth</em>, the prominence of this information among a weekly advertisement -- and the fact that the game is getting "World Premiere" treatment on tonight's award show -- puts some confidence in our normally skeptical perception of situations like this. Either way, we're likely to confirm this report's veracity when the VGAs roll this evening.<br />

This latest ad from Nintendo isn't the usual we've come accustomed to seeing from The Big N. For one, it lacks <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/nintendo-wants-you-to-play-for-you-and-celebrities/">any</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/beyonce-is-in-rhythm-heaven-ads-loves-guitar-hero/">celebrity</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/nicole-kidman-brain-age-2-ad/">presence</a> whatsoever. Second, it's the most original ad we've seen from Nintendo since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/little-mac-trains-doc-louis-eats-in-latest-punch-out-commerci/">the hilarious <em>Punch-Out!!</em> commercial</a>. Finally, we're just <em>really</em> into disappointed father figures. It's kinda our thing.<br />
<br />
Head past the break to check out the ad.<br />

Dear Mr. Larson,<br /> <br /> Congratulations! With your recent purchase of our <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/11/sonys-bravia-kdl-46v5100-lcd-hdtv-goes-on-sale/">46-inch Bravia KDL46X 3100 LCD TV</a>, you're eligible to receive a free PlayStation 3 -- provided you haven't changed your address, and still live in Australia. Funny story: You're actually the last person that's eligible to receive the free console with the TV's purchase. "Lucky Number 25,000," we've been calling you around the office. I'm running to the stockroom right now, so I can ship your console and television to you <em>personally</em>, along with a very heartfelt letter of gratitude.<br /> <br /> <em>Oh, crap</em>. Listen, Mr. Larson -- I might have forgotten something ... <em>important</em>. See, to promote this offer, we <em>may</em> have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/21/ps3-crashes-into-bravia-tv-at-50-mph-for-fun-and-profit-video/">flung the last PlayStation 3 <em>into</em> your Bravia television</a> at 50 mph. By "may have flung," of course, I mean "totally did fling." If it makes you feel any better, it was a <em>really</em> good ad (check it out after the jump)! Very thought-provoking, and even a little cheeky. Just know that your television and video game console died for a worthwhile cause. (What? No! <em>Of course</em> there are no refunds. Don't be silly.)<br /> <br /> Love, <br /> Sony Australia.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/sony-australia-flings-a-ps3-into-a-bravia-technophiles-cringe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Australia flings a PS3 into a Bravia, technophiles cringe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/sony-australia-flings-a-ps3-into-a-bravia-technophiles-cringe/">Sony Australia flings a PS3 into a Bravia, technophiles cringe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 11:30:00 EST. And how about all that <em>actual</em> gamepley footage, huh? Imagine selling a game based on that ... <em>How risqu&eacute;!</em><br /><br />With five days to go until launch, the game's success is one of the bigger question marks this holiday season. Thankfully, for <em>Borderlands'</em> sake, so many <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@breaking,delays">big games have left the arena</a> that a new IP (no, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/why-you-shouldnt-get-your-video-game-news-from-the-wall-street/"><em>not</em> internet protocol</a>) just might stand a better-than-average chance in the marketplace. The marketing leading up to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brutal-legend"><em>Br&uuml;tal Legend</em></a>'s Rocktober 13 release date (hey, that's today!) has been unlike any Tim Schafer game to date -- a steady stream of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/04/brutal-legend-multiplayer-mode-explained-in-latest-trailer/">content from the game</a> on top of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/09/brutal-legend-video-talks-about-the-competition/">occasional live-action short</a>. And now, Schafer's biggest project is taking the marketing machine to the boob tube (we've embedded the ad after the break, via <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVo98qkUoTc&amp;">YouTube</a>) with a 'Hell yeah!'-laden ditty.<br /><br />The bad economy paired with <em>Br&uuml;tal Legend</em>'s same-day release alongside <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a> means EA needs to get the word out. Hopefully Eddie Riggs' repeated phrase will do the trick.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/10/brutal-legend-tv-ad/">Wired</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/brutal-legend-ad-commercializes-eddie-riggs-for-television/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Brutal Legend ad commercializes Eddie Riggs for television</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/brutal-legend-ad-commercializes-eddie-riggs-for-television/">Brutal Legend ad commercializes Eddie Riggs for television</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 14:00:00 EST. It's really difficult for us to write clever observations about any installments in Sony's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/it-only-does-everything">It Only Does Everything</a>" ad campaign. For instance, the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/10/it-only-does-uncharted-2-among-thieves/">recent commercial</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a> (posted after the jump) is already really funny -- trying to get a few cheap <em>lulz</em> at its expense would be a Herculean comedic task.<br />
<br />
Regardless, we'll give it the ol' college try: Man, that guy's girlfriend sure is confused, isn't she? She thinks it's a movie! What a silly misconception. Oh, look, she's got popcorn! Man, don't you hate it when you eat popcorn and a piece of shell gets stuck in the back of your throat? That's <em>the worst</em>, isn't it? You're all like "<em>Hacccckkkkk! Caahllllkkk!</em>" And it just won't come out!<br />
<br />
Yeah,<em> we're done here.</em><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/03/uncharted-2s-cinematic-properties-parodied-in-ps3-commercial/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Uncharted 2's cinematic properties parodied in PS3 commercial</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/03/uncharted-2s-cinematic-properties-parodied-in-ps3-commercial/">Uncharted 2's cinematic properties parodied in PS3 commercial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Oct 2009 17:30:00 EST. Tecmo's creative team has certainly been churning out memorable ads for the upcoming PS3 release of <em>Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2</em>. The videos have shifted focus from sex to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/ninja-gaiden-sigma-2-ad-takes-a-stab-at-liberty/">violence</a> to ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/bizarre-ninja-gaiden-sigma-2-marketing-features-wall-molestation/">more sex</a>. The latest ad promotes the unique SIXAXIS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/ninja-gaiden-sigma-2-has-the-breast-use-of-sixaxis-ever/">motion controls</a> exclusive to the PS3 version. Like the stars of this commercial, we're certain you'll be shaking your head -- we'll leave it up to you whether it's in approval or disapproval.<br /><br />[Thanks, Sean!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/youll-shake-your-head-at-this-ninja-gaiden-ad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You'll shake your head at this Ninja Gaiden ad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/youll-shake-your-head-at-this-ninja-gaiden-ad/">You'll shake your head at this Ninja Gaiden ad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Sep 2009 05:45:00 EST. For those who missed the commercial, the offending line was, "You can't believe everything you read on the internet. Otherwise, I'd be a Nigerian millionaire by now." In response, government officials in Nigeria demanded an apology from Sony, as well as the immediate removal of the commercial.<br /><br />Sony was quick to issue just such an apology, and has since replaced the original ad with a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyVhP46xCQw">new version</a> that swaps out the incredulous statement with a less controversial one: "That's how World War I got started." This Japanese ad for<em> Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2</em> finally focuses less <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/bizarre-ninja-gaiden-sigma-2-marketing-features-wall-molestation/">on breasts</a> and more on what the series is iconic for: ninja action. A mysterious ninja (with absolutely filthy feet!) scampers around town, until he gets to his surprising goal. It's funny, yes, but the ending will undoubtedly make the mainstream media uncomfortable. "Video games teach kids to be terrorists" on CNN? "New PS3 game hates America" on FOX News? We can totally see it happening.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/ninja-gaiden-sigma-2-ad-takes-a-stab-at-liberty/">Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 ad takes a stab at liberty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 16:15:00 EST. It's an effective ad, for two reasons:<br />
<ol>
    <li>It shows that, should we pick up <em>Guitar Hero 5</em>, we too could have a room full of hotties gyrating and looking all sexy-like <br /></li>
    <li>Playboy Bunnies are skilled in the art of clairvoyance and don't even need to look at the TV to play</li>

Unfortunately, this ad doesn't show off any gameplay, instead focusing on the anime cutscenes that drive the game's story. You'll notice that the animation is in the style of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/first-images-of-valkyria-chronicles-anime/">TV series</a>, instead of the sketchy "canvas" look offered by the first PS3 game. The new ad campaign, which focuses on the redesigned, slim PS3 and new PSN services, is the first major campaign from SCEE since the highly criticized "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/this-is-living-the-european-ad-campaign-continues/">This is Living</a>" campaign from the system's launch over two years ago.<br /><br />The first of the "Start" series of ads focuses solely on entertainment services offered on PS3, like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vidzone">VidZone</a> and the included Blu-ray player. However, future ads will also talk about the bread and butter of the system: games. But before Sony continues with the campaign, we'd recommend the company fix its Google search recommendation. Right now, the ad ends telling viewers to search "PS3 Start." Unfortunately, <a href="http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&amp;thread.id=4017047">this pops up</a> as one of the first results for that search term. Ouch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/sony-spends-82-million-in-new-european-marketing-campaign/">Sony spends £82 million in new European marketing campaign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. <strong>Update:</strong> Hastings has since issued a cease &amp; desist letter to Joystiq, requesting we remove the image. According to Hastings' director of merchandising, the ad is "blatantly false," although we have good reason to believe otherwise. SCEA's Patrick Seybold also offered a rare comment, saying the ad "is fake." Thankfully, he did not do <a href="http://video.ign.com/dor/articles/855949/mega64/videos/mega64_prt_ps3slim_81009.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">this</span></a> to us.<br /><br />While we're respecting the request of Hastings, it's clear that a significant change is happening to Sony's business strategy regarding the PS3. As seen above, many European retailers are already cutting the price of the PS3 [Image credit: <a href="http://tinypic.com/r/357ioau/3">niels</a>]. Reports from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/14/european-retailer-hacks-100-from-playstation-3-in-run-up-to-gam/">Engadget</a> and <a href="http://es.engadget.com/2009/08/09/oficial-la-ps3-baja-de-precio-en-espana-consola-juego-por-299/">Engadget Spanish</a> also confirm cuts in multiple stores in Europe.<br /> <br /> Lending credibility to the image we received, the ad in question was sent to Joystiq <em>before</em> SCEA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/uncharted-socom-confrontation-going-greatest-hits-on-august-16/">announcement yesterday</a> of the Greatest Hits version of <em>Uncharted</em>, though precisely that was part of the Hastings ad. Coupled with the C&amp;D and Europe's retail actions lead us to believe a price drop is happening. We've included the original post (sans image) after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/hastings-ad-notes-100-price-drop-on-existing-non-slim-ps3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PS3 price drops spotted in Europe, US cut a possibility [update: Hastings responds]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/hastings-ad-notes-100-price-drop-on-existing-non-slim-ps3/">PS3 price drops spotted in Europe, US cut a possibility [update: Hastings responds]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 10:30:00 EST. It's tough being a super hero. If you're Dr. Doom and you're feeling down, you can just blow something up. If you're The Thing, well, all you can really do is look in a mirror and cry to yourself.<br /><br />That was before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/punch-out"><em>Punch-Out!!</em></a>, though, with a new ad (courtesy of <a href="http://www.gamervision.com/gamer/coop/news/article/nintendo_punch_out_advertisement_a_marvel">Gamervision</a>) popping up in comics showing two beefy brawlers finding a proper outlet for their stress. Oh, we really wouldn't suggest playing with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, super guys. Japanese video game mag <em><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/sp/090522_xbox360/">Famitsu</a></em> has an interesting ad as part of its "We Support Xbox 360" campaign. The games mentioned are<em> Magnacarta 2, </em><em>Bayonetta, Dream C Club, Time Leap, Memories Of 6: Next Relation, Tayutama: Kiss on my Deity </em>and<em> Gears of War 2</em>. Quite a different selection from the games we'd likely see recommended in any other region.<br /><br />As <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/26/which-xbox-360-games-does-famitsu-recommend/">Siliconera</a> points out, half the games on the list are visual novels -- the site can't decide if that's "a good sign since it shows niche Japanese developers are taking an interest in the Xbox 360," or a bad sign because there was nothing else for Famitsu to recommend. Somebody order more JRPGs like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/eternal-sonata">Eternal Sonata</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-wii-in-japan/">Infinite Undiscovery</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan-for-fourth-time-four-horsemen-dr/">Star Ocean</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/vesperia-helps-xbox-360-outsell-ps3-in-japan/">Tales of Vesperia</a></em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/famitsu-recommends-some-xbox-360-games/">Famitsu recommends some Xbox 360 games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 12:45:00 EST. This TV spot was found by a tipster, haran_elessar. The 30 second promo highlights Cole's electrifying powers, and hints at the morality system central to the game's plot. SCEI has just launched a new ad campaign in Japan that highlights the ability to download games to your PS3/PSP through the PlayStation Store. Guess what game they're using to highlight the service? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/final-fantasy-vii-now-available-on-the-playstation-store/"><em>Final Fantasy VII</em></a>, of course. The PlayStation Store has been growing quite rapidly lately, but Japanese gamers have been slow to fully embrace the concept of digital downloads. With a more aggressive push (and more <em>Final Fantasy</em>), we're sure the market for digital distribution will grow as much as it has here in the States.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/13/japanese-tv-commercial-promotes-the-playstation-store/">Japanese TV commercial promotes the PlayStation Store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST. Have you seen the <em>Killzone 2</em> TV commercial? The "Behind the Bullet" ad focuses on the journey of a single bullet in the Helghan battlefield. The entire commercial was rendered in real-time on the PS3, and players will be able to see the proof this week.<br />
<br />
A free PlayStation Network download will allow people to manipulate the visuals of the commercial in real-time and see all the various elements that go into creating the chaotic landscape of the ad. For a behind-the-scenes look at the, uh, behind-the-scenes making of the ad, check out <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/gametrailerstv_player.php?ep=54&amp;ch=4&amp;sd=0">GTTV</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/go-behind-the-behind-the-bullet-killzone-2-ad-this-thursday/">Go behind the 'Behind the Bullet' Killzone 2 ad this Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 14:15:00 EST. Who says you can't teach an Old Snake new tricks? Konami is looking to do just that, as evidenced by <a href="https://employment.en-japan.com/search/desc_job.cfm?WorkID=143568&amp;_pp_=ru%3D6">a job recruitment page</a>. The page went live on Friday and explains Konami is seeking people to help with "new developments" in the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear">Metal Gear</a> </em><em> </em>series, specifically for home consoles and mobile devices (more <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/metal-gear-solid-touch-dated-for-march-new-screens/"><em>Metal Gear Solid Touch</em></a>?). The job posting also lists other titles that Konami is working on that <em>aren't</em> part of the <em>Metal Gear </em>series, such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/winning-eleven"><em>Winning Eleven</em></a>, <em>Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball</em>, and <em>Bemani</em>, as well as new online game content and pachislot machines.<br /><br />Nothing else is explicitly mentioned, but if you want to try to make sense of the job ad (and can read Japanese), then by all means, click <a href="https://employment.en-japan.com/search/desc_job.cfm?WorkID=143568&amp;_pp_=ru%3D6">here</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/960/960343p1.html">IGN</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/konami-recruiting-for-more-metal-gear/">Konami recruiting for more Metal Gear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 13:18:00 EST. In addition,<strong> </strong><a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33478/Codemasters-Konami-join-Change4Life-criticism">Codemasters and Konami</a> have both expressed their disagreement. Konami mentioned its <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em> series, which requires <em>standing</em> and <em>moving</em>, and Codemasters' CEO Rod Cousens said, "Governments have a unique ability to get it wrong."<br /><br />Game publishers have begun speaking out against the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/uk-change4life-ad-campaign-attacks-gamers/">"Change4Life" ad campaign</a>, which draws a direct link between video games and early death. For whatever reason, Sega and Atari do not wish for their multimillion-dollar businesses to be associated with the death of children.<br /><br />Sega Europe president and COO Mike Hayes <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33467/Sega-denounces-Change4Life-ad">told MCV</a> that the company is "very disappointed" with the ad. "It remains a deep frustration that video gaming is selected to present a negative image of the UK's children, youth, consumer at large and the industry." He said that a "poorly informed advertising agency" must be responsible for an ad that singles out gaming instead of <em>more</em> passive media like television, music, and <em>reading</em>. <br /><br />Atari has also spoken out against the ad, announcing its support for MCV's complaint, and saying that "At best, the campaign is misleading and at worst, damaging to the industry, its reputation and its potential." In addition, the developer organization <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/tiga-85-of-uk-developers-want-tax-breaks-programmers-not-easy/">TIGA</a> also <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/tiga-slams-absurd-and-insulting-change4life-campaign">registered its displeasure</a> with the ad, filing a formal complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority.<br /><br />The Department of Health issued a <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33469/Government-defends-Change4Life">statement</a> in defense of "Change4Life," saying that it is "not saying that children shouldn't play computer games or eat treats, but parents and children need to be aware of the benefits of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle."<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33467/Sega-denounces-Change4Life-ad">Source</a> -- Sega<br /><a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33471/Now-Atari-denounces-Change4Life">Source</a> -- Atari<br /><a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/tiga-slams-absurd-and-insulting-change4life-campaign">Source</a> -- TIGA<br /><a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33469/Government-defends-Change4Life">Source</a> -- UK government responds<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/who-knew-publishers-dont-like-being-called-child-killers/">Who knew: Publishers don't like being called child killers [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 11:18:00 EST. That's about to change as SCEA has just unveiled its 30 second spot, to air tomorrow on "several networks." The spot focuses on a single <strike>sniper</strike> bullet, traveling through a chaotic battlefield. It reminds us a lot of last year's Angelina Jolie flick <em>Wanted</em> -- what do you think of it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/americas-30-second-killzone-2-commercial/">America's 30 second Killzone 2 commercial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 17:00:00 EST. The European 10-second <em>Killzone 2</em> ad is so incredibly brief that it's almost completely unremarkable. 20 percent of the ad goes towards showing the PLAYSTATION 3 logo, 60 percent of the ad goes towards showing Helghan running around, and 0 percent shows actual shooting or killing. Exciting? We think not.<br />
<br />
Let's hope the full advertising campaign (for both Europe and America) looks a bit ... more fulfilling than this.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/10-seconds-the-european-killzone-2-ad/">10 seconds: the European Killzone 2 ad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. <p> A new TV ad is set to hit the airwaves, this time focusing on the PlayStation Store. The Video Deliver Service now offers films like The Dark Knight and Hancock, and SCEA is more than eager to let people know. The commercial will debut on Monday Night Football. We're wondering if the ad will convince any consumers to buy a PS3. Probably not. However, it should educate PS3 owners about this feature.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ad-ps3-is-a-movie-downloading-machine/">Ad: PS3 is a 'movie downloading machine'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 22:00:00 EST. Wow, another ad for PSP? Did Sony spend money by accident? In Canada, of all places? This is a rather interesting ad for the PSP, but watch out for the music. It's pretty catchy, but we can see why it could bug a few people. Check out the ad after the break. It highlights all of Canada's landmarks. Wait, Canada has landmarks? We kid, of course.<br /><br />[Thanks, G. Much like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=segata+sanshiro&amp;search_type=&amp;aq=f">those awesome ads</a> for the Sega Saturn starring <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segata_Sanshiro">Segata Sanshiro</a>, we see potential for many more commercials starring the man above, whether they are for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/de-blob"><em>de Blob</em></a> or not.
