The long and puzzling saga of the PS3's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/40gbs-loss-of-backwards-compatibility-explained/">now removed</a> backwards compatibility with PS2 games may have just added another chapter. Japanese tech site <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//gigazine.net/index.php%3F/news/comments/20100914_ps3_ps2_adapter/&amp;sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8">Gigazine</a> recently uncovered a patent filed by Sony Japan in February 2009, which appears to outline an "adapter" that could serve as a bridge for older generation games (e.g., PS2 discs) to be played on current generation consoles (e.g., the PS3). <br />
<br />
We've contacted Sony for a comment on the patent, which was filed before Sony's John Koller <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/sony-ps2-back-compat-not-returning-to-ps3-ever/">definitively struck down</a> the possibility of backwards compatibility on the PS3 last August. It's worth noting that the filing doesn't explicitly state the device's use for PS2 games on PS3. But, c'mon, what else could it be talking about? A UMD adapter for the PSP Go? Actually, now that we think about it, that might just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/28/kingdom-hearts-birth-by-sleep-not-coming-to-psn/">come in handy</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/sony-patent-for-last-gen-console-adapter-surfaces/">Sony patent for last-gen console adapter surfaces</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 13:30:00 EST. Has your homebrew SNES masterpiece, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Manilow"><em>Secret of Manilow</em></a>, been trapped within your computer for a decade or so due to technological restraints? Time to dust off your old ROM file -- <a href="https://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/quickdev16">the Quickdev16 SNES developer cartridge</a> has all you need to get your brainchild up and running on Nintendo's Super console. The cart includes an Atmel AVR ATmega644 with boot loader, a USB connection with which to upload a ROM, 16 megabits of SRAM, and an RS232 converter. <br />
<br />
We're assuming that if you possess the technical know-how to craft custom SNES games, then you probably know what all that stuff means. We're also assuming that you'd be more inclined to pony up for the cart's $120 price tag than we are. That's just a <em>tad</em> too steep for an SNES cart -- or rather, an SNES cart that isn't a <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Original-Chrono-Trigger-Super-Nintendo-SNES-Sealed_W0QQitemZ130339310565QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Games?hash=item1e58d40be5">sealed, mint condition copy of <em>Chrono Trigger</em></a>.<br />

EMS's Classic Linker allows users to plug a Classic Controller into the GameCube controller slot, allowing it to be used as a GameCube controller. As an added bonus, it also allows the use of PlayStation or PS2 controllers! <br /><br />The Wii angle is nice, but where we see this being most useful is <em>in an actual GameCube</em>. The Classic Controller's button layout makes it superior even to the <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-23-49-en-70-21i.html">Hori Digital Pad</a> for use in the Game Boy Player.<br /><br />It had better have a longer cord than most controller adapters, because the Classic Controller's little cord doesn't exactly span a room. This accessory is available through <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-g4-49-en-70-34yd.html">Play-Asia</a> for $16.90.<br /><br />[Thanks, dreganfyre!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/adapter-turns-classic-controller-into-gamecube-controller/">Adapter turns Classic Controller into GameCube controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. Some hackers have gone even further, building <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/modded-nes-and-snes-controllers-work-wirelessly-with-wii/">custom circuitry</a> into old equipment. Much like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/wii-fanboy-review-nykos-wireless-nunchuk-adapter/">Nyko's wireless adapter</a>, Brando is offering up their own version, for the same price ($20). Unlike <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/wii-fanboy-hands-on-nyko-kama-wireless-nunchuk/">the Nyko Kama</a>, this is merely an adapter, which houses the original, wired <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nunchuk">nunchuk</a> and allows you to wrap up the wires, as pictured. We're not sure how comfortable <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brando">Brando's</a> option is, but if it's anything like the Nyko adapter, it's a really good option for those that hate wires.<br /><br />Anybody interested in a wireless adapter for their nunchuk? Does the wire bother you that much or are you fine with having the wire there?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/20/wireless-wii-nunchuk-adapter-frees-you-from-cabled-bondage/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/brando-reveals-a-wireless-nunchuk/">Brando reveals a wireless nunchuk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 10:15:00 EST. If you're in need of extra gigs for your PSP, but looking to save a pretty penny or two, perhaps you'll want to hear about this adapter. The PhotoFast CR-3500 microSDHC to Pro Duo adapter will allow microSDs and microSDHCs (high capacity) to work with both PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 models. The adapter supports microSDHCs up to eight gigs large.<br /><br />Now how is this going to save you a few bucks? Well, for the exact same amount of storage capacity, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-MicroSDHC-Memory-Adapter-Packaging/dp/B000SMVQK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1207853916&amp;sr=1-1">microSDHCs</a> offer a cheaper solution to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-4096MB-Memory-Stick-Media/dp/B000MW0DXU/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1207853778&amp;sr=1-8">Pro Duos</a> -- even if you factor in the price of the adapter. But hang on right there. There's no price yet on the adapter. However, a little rummaging finds the adapter listed on <a href="http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E3%83%88%E3%83%A9%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%86%E3%82%AF%E3%83%8E%E3%83%AD%E3%82%B8%E3%83%BC-CR-5300-microSD-SDHC%E2%86%92%E3%83%A1%E3%83%A2%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%83%83%E3%82%AFPro-Duo%E5%A4%89%E6%8F%9B%E3%82%A2%E3%83%80%E3%83%97%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC/dp/B0015BJRD4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1207888139&amp;sr=8-1">Amazon Japan</a> for <span class="price">?</span>990. That's roughly US$9.70. If that estimate holds true for North American consumers, then there's a lot of savings to be had.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=104064">DCEmu</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/new-adapter-allows-high-capacity-microsds-on-psp/">New adapter allows high capacity microSDs on PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 01:00:00 EST. Gaming peripheral maker Nyko today <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/01/29/cord-free-wireless-adapter-lets-you-trade-your-cord-for-a-huge-l/">announced</a> an adapter that promises to cut the cord on your existing wired Wii Nunchuks (metaphorically, of course). Not to be confused with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/nyko-offering-plethora-of-peripherals-in-early-08/">standalone wireless Nunchuk</a> Nyko announced last month, the new adapter will connect to an existing wired Nunchuk, allowing it to communicate with a Wii remote up to 15 feet away (handy for people with a 15-foot wingspan!).<br /> <br />Don't worry about the Nunchuk cord drooping limply across your leg either -- according to the release, the adapter comes with a "self-standing Nunchuk sleeve" that has "a convenient compact cord management system keeping the existing Nunchuk cord organized and out of site [<em>sic</em>]."<br /><br />The adapter, including two required AAA batteries, will retail for $19.99, making it $10 less than Nyko's standalone wireless Nunchuk (though the whole package is $10 more when combined with a $20 wired Nunchuk). Wire-hating gamers who already own four Nunchuks might want to look for it in February.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/new-nyko-adapter-to-unwire-wii-wired-nunchuk/">New Nyko adapter to unwire Wii wired Nunchuk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST. Nyko earned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/wireless-nunchuck-is-the-best-at-ces-according-to-cnet/">great acclaim</a> at CES for their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/wireless-nunchuk-removes-the-very-last-controller-cord-from-your/">Wireless Nunchuck</a> peripheral, which is like the Nunchuk, only wireless. A new GameStop product listing has shown up, indicating that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nyko/">Nyko</a> already plans to expand their Nunchuk-emancipation product line, with a new item that will release two months <em>before</em> the Wireless Nunchuck. <br /><br />There are no pictures, but the description of the "Wii Cord-Free Wireless Adaptor" states that the item "converts your wired Nunchuk attachment into a wireless peripheral" powered by two AAA batteries. The battery case is integrated into a "self-standing sleeve" that also tucks the Nunchuk's cord away. It sounds pretty bulky, but if the Wireless Nunchuck is any indication, they seem to know what they're doing -- with Nunchuks, anyway. The Cord-Free Wireless Adaptor is currently listed for a February 20 release, for $20.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/another-nunchuk-detangler-on-the-way-from-nyko/">Another Nunchuk detangler on the way from Nyko</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 09:45:00 EST. We are still fascinated by this gigantic, impractical Famicom cartridge adapter. That's why we were <em>delighted</em> when GAME Watch picked up one of CYBER Gadget's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/24/famicom-adapter-makes-the-ds-useful/">CYBER Familator Lite</a> adapters and tested it out, taking plenty of pictures during the process. Unsurprisingly, but still sadly, the various issues with the device make it a suboptimal method of playing Famicom games.<br /><br />Most notably, you can't plug a second controller in, meaning also that the Famicom microphone (which is embeded in the player 2 controller) cannot be used. Also, the system can't hook up to the Famicom Disk System. The Familator also suffers compatibility issues with a few games, including <em>Bases Loaded.</em><br /><br />GAME Watch did a side-by-side comparison of the Familator's TV output of <em>Xevious</em> to the Wii's Virtual Console version of the same game, and found that the colors and the sound were inferior, even without taking into account the Wii's ability to use component and D-terminal connections. Battery life was, of course, also an issue.<br /><br />None of these concerns are exactly dealbreakers, but even as a novelty it would be hard to justify the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/cyber-familator-lite-faminow-available/">expense</a> of such an item without <em>excellent</em> performance.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/familator-taken-out-for-a-test-familate/">Familator taken out for a test-Familate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 14:15:00 EST. We're sure you feel the same way.<br /><br />That's why we think CYBER Gadget's CYBER Familator Lite is so great. Based on their <a href="http://www.cybergadget.co.jp/products/fc_sfc/4544859003417/">CYBER Familator</a> "Famiclone," It plugs into the DS's GBA slot and allows the system to play genuine (and pirate, we suppose) Famicom cartridges. And, with the <a href="http://www.vintagecomputing.com/index.php/archives/23">right <em>Gyromite</em> cartridge</a>, it'll play American games too. It even has TV out, making it a fully functional Famicom!<br /><br />It'll be out in Japan next month, but CYBER Gadget has yet to announce the price. The amazing name will probably bump it up an extra 1000 yen or so. <em>Familator.</em></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/24/famicom-adapter-makes-the-ds-useful/">Famicom adapter makes the DS useful</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST. You should be well aware by now of our weak resistance to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/intecs-wii-charging-station-decent-dock-or-crap-cradle/">goofy</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/playing-easily-shooting-happily/">packaging</a>. They pull at us, whispering cryptic messages into our ears, like dead children trying to give us clues about their murderers.<br /><br />There are so many odd things going on in this UGame cover:<br />
<ul>
    <li>The redhead witch in the flimsy blue dress is holding a golden Wii remote with an attached wand. Could it be some sort of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brando">Brando accessory</a> that we haven't heard about yet?</li>
    <li>The schoolboy chasing the woman looks too happy for his own good. Perhaps class just let out? Or maybe the leggy sorceress hypnotized the salivating fool, leading him to what will surely be his grisly death.</li>
    <li>Above them, another young witch flies over the scene, straddling a torn PS2 controller cord fashioned into a broom. For reasons never mentioned, she is dressed as <em>PaRappa</em>. </li>
</ul>
Past the post break, we've got a larger image of the box, a photo of the actual product, and <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Clarissa</span> Sabrina, the teenage witch. Wiggle your nose and head over there.<br /></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/play-wii-games-with-a-ps2-controller-consort-with-witches/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Play Wii games with a PS2 controller, consort with witches</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/play-wii-games-with-a-ps2-controller-consort-with-witches/">Play Wii games with a PS2 controller, consort with witches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 19:10:00 EST. Already have a MicroSD card (used in many portable devices, such as cell phones)? Then, you may be interested in picking up <a href="http://www.superufo.com/product_html/PC_Computer_MICRO_SD_TO_MS_PRO_DUO_ADAPTOR.html?aff_id=24#">SuccessHK</a>'s MicroSD adapter, which will let the card fit snugly into the PSP. Beyond cross-platform compatibility, you'll get access to cheaper memory. For example, we found a 6GB card for only $85 on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VUPUOU/002-7260261-1587257?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000VUPUOU">amazon.com</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/micro-sd-to-ms-pro-duo-adaptor-76506.html">DCEmu</a>]<br /><br />[<strong>Update:</strong> A reader has chimed in, saying the device is unreliable. The next time you find yourself in the COEX Mall in Seoul and you find one of your screws is coming loose in your handheld or you need to give your screen a quick cleaning and dare not take your t-shirt to it, check out one of these Service Zones. As you can see, there are also lockable cabinets where you can get your DS (and, we assume, DS Lite) charged while you're shopping. <br /><br />Apparently, the idea extended from similar areas that offer the same kind of services, except for cell phones. If you ask us, we'd like to see this extended to other territories. Namely, <em>here.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/11/ds-service-zone-provides-diy-utilities-in-seoul/">DS Service Zone provides DIY utilities in Seoul</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 11:30:00 EST. Yet many PS3 owners have had to keep their PS2 units hooked up for a few reasons, namely:<br />
<ol>
    <li>Support for our old memory card saves.</li>
    <li>Support for rumbling controllers.</li>
    <li>Support for the <span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero</span> controller.<br /></li>
</ol>
The first problem is solved by an <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802581">official Sony adapter</a> which you can buy for $15, use once, and then throw away, we suppose. The second problem is solved by the recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/ps3-firmware-upped-to-1-7-issues-with-playing-ps-classics-on-ps/">firmware update 1.7</a>, which added rumble support for old controllers hooked up via any number of <a href="http://www.google.com/products?q=USB+playstation+controller+adapter&amp;hl=en&amp;rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-23,GGGL:en&amp;pwst=1&amp;um=1&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=froogle&amp;ct=title">USB to PlayStation controller adapters</a>. Yet the third and most important problem remained -- if you want to play <em>Guitar Hero</em>, you need to keep a PS2 handy. <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=802566">Pelican's new controller adapter</a> promises to fix this final problem, but the execution is less than perfect.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/review-pelican-ps2-to-ps3-controller-adapter/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Review: Pelican PS2 to PS3 controller adapter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/review-pelican-ps2-to-ps3-controller-adapter/">Joystiq Review: Pelican PS2 to PS3 controller adapter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 May 2007 11:28:00 EST. Such <a href="http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3569">adapters already exist</a> at a steep cost; you plug component and audio cables in one end, and a single <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Definition_Multimedia_Interface">HDMI</a> cable feeds out the other.<br /><br />That's cool if you're down with OCD, but for the rest of us, why bother? One feature of HDMI is to run a digital signal for audio and video over a single cable. Connecting each audio and component feed into an analog-to-digital converter negates that one-cable, digital-only benefit.<br /><br />Another "feature" of HDMI is its support for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP">HDCP</a>, and these adapters can't handle that copy-protected signal. What that means is someday, when a studio executive pushes a red button to turn on an Image Constraint Token for new movies, an HD-DVD enabled 360 will down-scale HD movies to DVD-quality; full quality in that future scenario will require a direct HDCP connection between a device and a TV. And some of our fancy HDTVs don't even support HDCP. Thank you, piracy panic.<br /><br />Maybe Microsoft is preparing an HDMI cable to interface with the original 360's video-output port. Even then, the interface change won't impact games; it's only a convenience and movie issue.<br /><br /><em>Note that pictured adapter includes component to VGA cable.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/30/component-to-hdmi-cables-already-exist-already-pointless/">Component to HDMI cables already exist, already pointless</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2007 18:15:00 EST. The verdict: the $80 device works well as a PS2 gamepad adapter, but its keyboard-and-mouse input played worse than a standard Xbox controller. The review reminds us that Xbox games were designed for the Xbox controller -- simple enough, but something we began to forget while hoping for a PC-like experience -- so a game like <em>Gears of War</em> just doesn't map properly.<br /><br />For other games, like <em>Halo 2</em>, apparently the adapter is glitchy; key presses lag, and the mouse control isn't as good as a PC. Games that offer many analog sensitivity options work best, but the XFPS is far from a universal solution.<br /><br />At least we'll always be able to use the XFPS as an excuse. Even with this mediocre review, we can claim that opponents with mouse control are the cause of our frequent Xbox Live losses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/30/xfps-reviewed-not-ready-for-prime-time/">XFPS reviewed: Not ready for prime time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 30 Dec 2006 17:09:00 EST. This dongle lets you use USB or PS/2 mice and keyboards to control Xbox 360 games. (It also works with a PS2 controller, but we don't see the draw to use that gamepad over the standard Xbox 360 controller.) Many of us never made the jump to first-person shooters with a gamepad; console controls feel so clunky compared to gaming on a PC. So we play most of our FPS titles on computers, but maybe this will give us better control in Xbox exclusives.<br /><br />The XFPS is scheduled to be released in January for about $80. Still, for those not quite on the send-information-zipping-on-airwaves bandwagon, the lack of an ethernet port on the system meant either buying a router or one of Nintendo's silly <a href="http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?currency=USD&amp;storeId=10001&amp;jspStoreDir=NOASTORE&amp;productId=95704&amp;categoryId=11157&amp;langId=-1&amp;catalogId=10001&amp;ddkey=SetCurrencyPreference">USB dongles</a>. Even if wireless is available, many users prefer the stability of a wired network anyway, and those USB ports on the back of the Wii have as of yet been unused. Until...<br /><br />Through some sort of <em>electronic melding procedure</em>, an unofficial ethernet-to-USB adapter (<span style="display: inline;">KINAMAX USB 2.0 to RJ45 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T Network Adapter, found for sale at NewEgg <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812203024">here</a> for $20) seems to send all the necessary 1's and 0's to the Wii. Why this adapter works and others not, we have no idea. Still, it's best not to look a gift horse in the mouth; if you wanted a wired connection, you've got one. Before you go digging around for your old gamepads, consider that each adapter costs $19 (plus $6 S&amp;H per order), roughly equaling the cost of Nintendo's Classic Controller, which offers greater compatibility and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/20/theres-a-wiimote-in-my-pocket-wii-annoyance-005/">semi-wireless</a> freedom.<br /><br />RetroZone will begin shipping the NES adapter in January, followed by the SNES adapter shortly thereafter. You can plug in that silly classic controller, and have the Wiimote sit awkwardly on your lap. You can use a Gamecube controller, with its a-bit-too-complex-for-old-school button layout. Or, you can turn your Wiimote on its side for simplistic button configurations. None of these solutions are quite perfect, and fail to evoke that sense on <em>controller nostalgia</em> for which we so long.<br /><br />Ready for ten tons of cool? Electronic badasses over at <a href="http://www.retrousb.com/wii.html">RetroZone</a> have made two ever-so-simple adapters that allow you to plug in an NES or SNES controller directly into the Wii's Gamecube controller ports, for use with VC titles. That's right. Your original controllers of awesomeness will work as they once did. And only $19.99! What a bargain.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/30/break-out-the-retro-folks/">Break out the retro, folks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 17:00:00 EST. Those who play racing games know that nothing beats a good wheel and pedal set up, but there are many who don't want to spend extra money on such a peripheral. Control pads, however, are far from optimal. Analogue controllers have ushered in the era of analogue steering, but making small adjustments with an analogue stick can be a pain. This typically results in oversteering and requires constant correction -- something that can really pull you out of the experience.<br /><br />Enter the new adapter from KontrolFreek. The small adapter attaches directly to the left analogue stick easily. The adapter sports little wings on each side to give players extra leverage, making small adjustments easier. The adapter may look silly, but IGN claims that it actually does improve control. Head over to the <a href="http://kontrolfreek.com/">KontrolFreek</a> website for more info. You can also register to be notified when the product becomes available. So, would you stick some horns onto your controller if it gave you the edge?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/29/kontrolfreek-boosts-driving-game-performance/">KontrolFreek boosts driving game performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Nov 2006 12:00:00 EST. But even if you've amassed a collection of cards, you'll be frustrated by the adapter's insistence upon creating a new "Virtual Memory Card" directory on the PS3's hard drive for each card. That is, the system is not intuitive enough to combine and separate your PS1 and PS2 saves into two, easy to navigate categories. In addition, the entire contents of a card must first be copied to the HDD, and then users can single out specific game saves for permanent storage or deletion. Sounds like there's a new PS3 annoyance to add to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3annoy" target="_blank">the list</a>...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/kludge-alert-ps3-memory-card-adapter/">Kludge alert: PS3 memory card adapter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 04:55:00 EST. Just to make things confusing, the device also supports a <em>PS2</em> (as in PlayStation 2) gamepad although we're not sure why anyone would want to substitute one gamepad for another. We'll just consider that a value-add. The device isn't available yet, so interested parties should keep an eye on XCM's site. But before you go plunking down your paycheck, we'd be wary that Microsoft will try to detect -- and disable -- devices like the XFPS in an effort to maintain a balanced playing field.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/11/22/go-all-dualshock-on-your-360-prototype-edition/">Xbox 360 Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/xfps-lets-you-use-keyboard-mouse-on-the-360/">XFPS lets you use keyboard/mouse on the 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 09:35:00 EST. Today, <a href="http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12316/Connect-a-Mouse-and-Keyboard-to-Your-Xbox-360/">TeamXbox</a> received some prototype shots of the device as TeamXtender seems to be moving full speed ahead in development. The adapter itself is looking a tad large, but I guess beauty is neglected as functionality is the main focus. More pictures after the jump.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/22/go-all-dualshock-on-your-360-prototype-edition/">Go all Dualshock on your 360, prototype edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 20:00:00 EST.
